I expected more of a survey of world security issues. This class focused too heavily on theory. It was very disorganized; I had no idea what we were supposed to be studying week-to-week. The professor is extremely biased. He also peppers his lectures with some glaring factual inaccuracies.
Although he was very knowledgeable about international/security theory, he was incapable of effectively communicating real life scenarios to back the theory up. Also, every class was EXACTLY the same. It seemed there was only about 1 week worth of material (sometimes very confusing material). Creativity is not encouraged at all, very by the book
Not clear at all! All exams are written and the classes is overly based on theory which the teacher does not properly explain.
Overall an easy class, and a solid professor. He does indeed teach with a heavy emphasis on theory, but I found it interesting. An easy A if you learn the theories (which he teaches very well). Come to class and and you'll be fine. Readings are helpful but not absolutly necessary. Just don't expect much discussion on many security issues.
Almost all the class was focused on theory; there was very little discussion of actual real world events (no discussion of the Cold War, for example, till the last day of class). Got the same grade on papers, no matter whether I followed his suggestions or not. But, he did put his powerpoints online, which was nice (and made it easy to study).
I had him for intro stats in the grad program (don't recall the course number). Thought he did a bang-up job, even though he occasionally spoke well-above everyone's head. Always willing to help, in or out of class.
wonderfully interesting. brilliant man. very much worth taking. not even hard to pass.
I really liked his class - though certainly he's theory oriented. If you come to class and take good notes, you should have no problem making As on the tests. Also usually gives generous extra credit... Take him
I did not find this class interesting at all and the double block was painful at times. There were four essay exams in the class and that was it, but they were graded by a TA and not him. You can get by without reading the books if you attend the lectures and take good notes. He takes attendance every class so you need to go.
This was a fine class. He's an okay professor, but a little strict of UF policies and such. The lectures are a bit boring, but he knows what he's talking about. He makes it pretty clear what information is important, and the tests and quizzes were pretty easy. It does matter to show up toe lectures and discussion, though.
Not a very stimulating lecturer, but gets relays the material effectively. He provides insight and extra info about the slides, which is what the exams primarily consist of. Discussion quizzes could be cake or hell depending on your TA. (Don't bother stressing about knowing the readings unless your TA quizzes you guys on them)
I also had Arfi for the graduate stats course. I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy most of my time at UF (long story) but I did like him. He taught his class well, even though he was pretty disrespected by some of my classmates (really - reading a newspaper completely unfolded during class? This is grad school, not middle school!). Definitely a good one
Very long readings every week, and the tests are all made up of essays. You must attend all the lectures and discussions and put in lots of time.
Excellent lectures, information tested on exam all come from lecture and if you read it will benefit you on the quizzes and tests; however, most of the material on the quizzes come from lecture and on the exams the readings merely provide supplementary information for answers. Go to class, take notes, review before exams and youll do well.
Very interesting class, lots of readings but most of them wont show up on exams. attendance lecture/discussion is a grade. it is very important which TA you get because i have heard some students struggling in other sections. I think Orlando is definitely one of the best ones with regards to the pop quizzes
This class entails a lot of reading, but I really enjoyed it and found it to be not super difficult. Depending on your TA, your tests and quizzes (the only grades besides attendance and participation) might be graded differently, but as long as you do your work and know what's going on it isn't too bad. Plus, Arfi is so knowledgeable and sweet!
Overall great professor, really seemed interested in the class and even tried to add humor in his lectures. The class was also affordable, no required textbooks just readings on canvas and his lectures.
This was a challenging class. There was roughly 40 pages of academic reading per week. The test questions were vague and difficult to answer. The class stressed theory but the test required concrete examples. Arfi would often ramble and oversimplified complex issues. To his credit, he does love what he teaches, he's just not good at teaching it.
At least 30 pages of reading per week, often more, that were usually only relevant for quizzes in the discussion. For the exams, which were usually comprised of relatively general questions, there was almost no content from the readings and everything was from the powerpoints. Difficulty of class depends on TA. Arfi is nice; lectures were boring.
Arfi is very passionate about international relations and politics in general, and hes quite knowledgeable, although sometimes he is unclear or doesnt elaborate on complex aspects. Articles to read no textbook, sometimes dry but overall good class to take. Success depends on TA you get.
Extremely knowledgeable on all things related to global politics, he always provides a plethora of examples and real world applications to the topics we are studying. Grade is someone dependent on quizzes administered by TA's in discussion sections (with 6 TA's the quizzes were all different, some thought this was unfair). Overall loved the class.
Dr. Arfi moves at a very slow pace and lectures can get boring at times. Overall felt like the class was pretty easy and required little work to do well.
Class was not structured and we didnt use a textbook. Dont take it. Lousy Professor and Graduate TAs.
The lectures were lousy and the class overall was disorganized. Expectations on exams and quizzes were not clear.
In this class your TA really matters, they do all the grading and decide criteria for quizzes and discussion posts. The class had six different TAs, so everyone's experience was different. Class was very unstructured which oftentimes required you to do 60 plus pages of reading in one night due to the possibility of a pop quiz in class the next day
Arfi is a very intelligent and sweet professor but your grade in the class REALLY depends on your TA. I used all the information from the lectures and rarely read the articles and got an A, though if you did the same thing with another TA you could have gotten a much lower grade. Very interesting class and course material by Arfi though.
Arfi is pretty good. His lectures can get boring if you aren't particularly interested, but he knows his stuff. The exams are rather easy, sometimes the questions were worded weirdly but if you know how to write compellingly you will be stellar. Your TA matters A LOT in this course. They can make your life miserable or bliss. For me it was bliss.
Like others have said who you get as your TA is crucial. The one that I got was a nitpicker who would not give out As.
Arfi is so kind and knowledge. His lectures were honestly a bit disorganized, but he also was simplifying a lot for non-poli sci kids. If you're in poli sci you will understand the content and like his examples/rambles, but if you're not it'll seem useless and disorganized. Overall an amazing guy, but made for upper level classes.
Grading criteria was unclear and the lectures would often fall into rambling territory, but Professor Arfi is clearly very passionate. He was kind and showed that he cared about his students, but as it has been said before your experience in the class fully depends on your TA.
This class was unnecessarily challenging. Long lectures, discussion sections with pop quizzes, take-home exams that required 2,000+ words of writing each within 24-48 hr periods on weekends. Grading rubrics were unclear and expectations were unequal across TA sections. Professor Arfi was kind and passionate, but his lectures were very disorganized.
He sucks. Legitimately the worst professor I've had at UF. He's boring and lectures easily go off-topic. Essays are graded tough but depend on TA. Lectures are mandatory but virtually useless because all the powerpoints are online. He's a nice dude just only recommend if mandatory.
professor arfi is a great teacher but since it is a huge lecture class your TA matters a lot in this course. the lectures can get a little boring but it is overall a great class and I learned a lot. the exams are relatively easy if you take good notes too.
Dr. Arfi is excellent. He knows the material very well and his lectures are full of enriching detail which he provides. His exams and quizzes are very easy, and everything ties in very well with the class. He is also very friendly and always ready to help.
Arfi is a super nice guy and you can tell he's passionate about the topics. The exams are pretty easy and are open note. His lectures sometimes go off topic and are confusing. The class really depends on who your TA is as they grade everything you do and come up with discussion questions and give the quizzes. Overall pretty easy class to get an A.
definitely has some boring lectures and goes off on weird tangents, but his class was super easy to get an A in and he's a pretty chill professor. your ta is very important to your grade.
I liked when he talked about aliens, other than that he was not very good at teaching the subject in my opinion. Lectures were messy and all over the place and would not get to the point. Definitely a passable class but I know someone else can do a better job.
Heres the thing about Arfi. Hes a good guy/lecturer but hes not the one grading your papers and exams in this class. He leaves it up to the TAs and even if your TA is grading harsher than a 4000 level course, he will still back them up, which was very frustrating for me since my TA took it upon herself to grade as harsh as possible.
Prof. Arfi is a good lecturer and tells you everything you need to know for his exams. As long as you attend class and take good notes your performance on quizzes and essays will be fine. Your grade does depend on your TA and their grading, though. I was lucky enough to have a great TA for this course who graded clearly and was extremely fair.
Dr. Arfi is extremely kind and knowledgable, but his lectures can be vague or filled with tangents. He makes sure to be accessible outside of class, but his answers to questions can be off-topic at times. It might be because the class was at intro level, but it seemed like he was oversimplifying the material at times.
A good guy, but his lectures are kind of useless. Easily could look at them individually and learn the course. I lucked out on my TA, I got Margaret and she was super chill. Wasn't difficult to get an A in the class. Only really recommend if mandatory, otherwise save the money for a class with more substance.
Arfi's lecture were boring for INR but his off topic talks were kinda interesting. The key to the class is to listen to the real world examples he gives for the topics that are covered which you can use on the exams. Grade solely matters on the TA you have. Arfi seems like a great guy lol
Don't get me wrong, the class was a pretty chill pre-req. But his unrelated lectures were frustrating, especially at 8:30. The exams are cake and your ta will make or break your grade.
His class depends on his TA. I did not interact with him much. He gives pop quizzes and those can be difficult. But they are in your section. The lectures Ans exams were easy to follow and not very difficult if you paid attention. The format was a little difficult tho. I took him in 2018.
Straight up: Your grade depends upon your TA. I had JAMES BIONDI and his grading is unclear to say the last. Easy pop quizzes and exams as long as you know basic concepts and examples.
Prof is nice but his lectures are mostly tangents. He explains course material through examples and they are good for reference on exams but I felt like I didn't have a clear understanding of what I learned. The grades depend on the TAs some are more difficult than others. I had Hannah Lazar: she is helpful, concise, and thoughtful which was great
Mandatory attendance at 8:30 was the worst thing about this class. Lectures could be tangential at times. Try to listen as he will give good examples you can use in the exams. Exams are 5 short answer and 1 essay in 50 minutes, so you have to know your stuff. "pop" quizzes in discussions, participation + attendance in those. Margaret is a great TA.
Arfi is a great professor but the grade you get depends almost entirely on your TA. I had James Biondi and he's a nice guy, but is very unclear on what he expects from you and seems to pull grades out of thin air. The tests are easy if you attend and pay attention to lecture. There's also no homework besides readings.
Most readings in this class are unnecessary. If you just pay attention to the examples he gives in the lectures, you will do well. However, your grade does depend on your TA. Be prepared to write a lot during tests. Form study groups and exchange different examples you have of key concepts, and you will be okay.
Good professor with good lectures; first exam will catch you off guard if you do not really study, make sure to do a couple of the readings (not required) per unit, best way to study is to reflect off the top of your head with no multiple choice since exams are five free response and one; quizzes are pop quizzes that are free response.
Arfi seemed chill- it's a huge lecture class. Sometimes his lectures went off-topic, but it's important to pay attention to his examples for the exams. Grade depends on TA, I had James and adored him. He is very accessible, open to explaining concepts, and gives feedback on exams. Doesn't have rubric for essays but pop quizzes are cake.
Lectures are probably the hardest thing to get through with Arfi. He is nice, however, the lectures do either the bare minimum or go on tangents that don't necessarily relate to the topic. The grade will depend on your TA, and luckily I got one who was pretty lenient with grading. As long as you study, you'll have no problem in class.
Your TA grades your exams, so pick a good one. All exams are handwritten/ essay types, so you will need many examples. The professor lectured about nonimportant things and took attendance for the 8:30 lecture. Attend the TA lecture because those are actually helpful.
His lectures were very helpful. However, he tended to go off topic. Discussion sessions are super helpful, but your grade does depend on your TA. I had Jain Choi and loved her. Only assignment other than tests are weekly discussion posts. For tests, group study sessions were super helpful. Overall, awesome class and professor.
Arfi is a great professor. He goes over various real-world examples and issues that explain the topics he talks about. He is very knowledgeable about international relations. The TAs grade everything, but the quizzes and the discussions are not bad. Exams are easy, just a lot of writing in 50 minutes.
Dr. Arfi's class is relatively easy and Freshman friendly. This class is an easy A if you show up and participate in discussion sections. TAs grade the exams which consist of an essays and five short responses. My TA was Jain Choi and she was great. Also, he gives readings but a lot of people don't do them and still have As in the class.
Good professor with entertaining lectures. Grade is exam-heavy but exams are generally easy. Pay attention in class and review your notes beforehand and you'll be fine. My TA was Eunah Jung and she was excellent.
Arfi is a very sweet professor, but his lectures are so boring and don't make any sense, and his classes are mandatory at 8 am. There are three exams the whole semester and as long as you attend class and have a good TA, they're pretty easy.
Prof Arfi's class was very enjoyable and serves as the perfect basis for any ins or inr class. Lectures were boring at times but easy to get through. Four essays throughout the semester but if you read and paid attention they were easy A's. Pop quizzes in discussion questions but content was reviewed before hand. Would take again.
This was class was very easy. Professor Arfi wasn't the best lecturer but he's a nice guy and the subject was easy enough. The TAs grade very leniently.
Mandatory attendance at 8 am. Lectures are mind numbing. Arfi is a great guy and very funny, but he overexplains a very simple topic for an entire hour while you wonder why you even woke up at 7 for it. Exams are very easy if you took AP Lang/Lit as it's a ton of writing in 50 minutes, but the material is very straightforward. TAs are great.
Ok so Dr. Arfi is a super sweet, knowledgable, and funny guy, but his lectures tend to get oversimplified and off topic very quickly, making the mandatory 8AM lecture kind of painful. The TAs are super knowledgable as well and helpful! Farayola is super sweet TA and her discussion classes teach much better than the lectures. Stressful tests tho...
I completely understand everyone saying his lectures are boring, however, he's a super sweet man that genuinely cares about educating. If you have any issues whatsoever, reach out and he'll make sure to help. Very easy class and sweet professor.
Lectures were not super super interesting, however you don't really need to pay attention. The TAs are really good at condensing the information into what will be asked on the exam. He wants everyone to get an A and it is definitely doable
Dr. Arfi is very sweet, but the lectures are required at 8:30 AM and he often goes on tangents. There are ONLY 8 POP quizzes, and 4 tests. That's all. No assignments, and attendance is only 10%. For someone not super into the subject, I didn't enjoy the class at all since the exams are 5 short response paragraphs then an essay.
Arfi is sweet in like a grandpa way... he just kinda rambles about aliens and takes AGES explaining some useless graph and then flies through the important information in the last 30 secs of the class. Success is entirely dependent on your TA, though. The class is made up of 4 tests and 8 pop quizzes. I'd never endure that again.
I 100% get what everyone means by his lectures being lackluster, but Arfi is genuinely the sweetest. I had Caitlin as my TA and she was genuinely the best, her powerpoints condensed all important information. The exams are daunting on paper but in actuality are not bad. Mandatory attendance at 8:30 was grueling but doable.
Arfi is sweet and caring but his lectures are so disorganized and redundant. Attendance is mandatory at 8:30 which I wouldn't mind if lectures were helpful but I got nothing out of them. Exams aren't hard and TAs prep you super well (shoutout Caitlin). Pop quizzes about once a week in section, difficulty depends on the TA. Easy A but a nuisance
Prof. Arfi is knowledgeable and a nice guy, but goes off-topic during his lectures, and so oftentimes he doesn't get through all of the slides. He is good at explaining things in office hours if you go. The exams are pretty excruciating, as it's 50 straight minutes of writing. Your grade depends on your TA. TA Islam is a nice guy, but tough grader.
You will not learn anything in this class, but it is an easy A. Arfi is a nice person, but a terrible lecturer. The lectures are mandatory, but useless to your understanding of the content. He spends the entire class talking about something completely off-topic and his slides are disorganized. Getting a good TA will make your life so much easier.
Graded by 4 exams, attendance, participation, and 8 random quizzes. Class really depends on your TA. You do not get a lot from the lectures, so if your TA is bad you're out of luck. Mine was very unhelpful and a harsh grader. Class very much depends on this as they do all of the grading. Quizzes are a dif format for each TA, which is frustrating
Totally depends on your TA (who grades EVERYTHING). My whole section had a really bad experience with our TA, who didn't explain things and graded very arbitrarily. However, I saw some of the other TAs' slides and they were really good (you can go on files in Canvas and find them). Lectures were unhelpful; you will have to do your own research.
I took Dr. Arfi for both INR and POS, safe to say he is an AMAZING professor. So personable, passionate, and dedicated. His AI class is structured better than his INR class, and his lectures are more engaging and useful for exams. But he is such a caring man once you get to know him and I could sing praises his way for hours.
I had the pleasure of taking Dr Arfi for both INR and POS and safe to say he is an amazing Prof!! Such a caring, passionate, and personable man. I will say his AI class was much better than INR structure-wise, but I think it's due to him having more control in a smaller class. Such an amazing guy, and I could sing praises his way for hours.
I thought that the lectures were disorganized and slow, but the discussions were good for basic knowledge. Very nice but he doesn't fit my style of learning. It felt like you had to put pieces together to gain a general understanding rather than learning principles and then applying them. The ppts are not as useful for an intro class.
Arfi was a lighthearted presence that was uplifting for an 8am class, but content-wise he lacked. Lectures were disorganized and lacked substance. Attendance and participation in breakout is huge in this class. TA's are a HUGE deal in his class. They do the grading for their sections and can often be rather harsh, especially for an intro class.
He was a really great professor who made himself so accessible outside of class. His lectures were always great, and he was very lenient. The assignments and readings are all easy too so do them for participation points. One of the best at UF!
Disorganized, boring, rambling lectures. Most of the learning came in discussion sections, but even those were disorganized and not really helpful. Content was easy, but repetitive. Exams were a lot of writing for having only 50 minutes.
Lectures incredibly boring and don't seem to have a point. Sometimes rambles on nonsense for 20 minutes before going back to his slideshow. Lectures are mandatory at 8:30 for no reason because a vast majority of the material for the test comes from the discussion classes, which aren't bad
This class is oddly difficult for an Intro class, the grading is very particular. Success is also very dependent on the TAs, some grade more liberally or provide more support than others. The Exams are structured and weighted in odd ways, with a lot of writing in a short amount of time. Lectures tend to derail into nothing as others have said
Entertaining lecturer and chill with workload and grading. Course content is easy but a bit disorganized. A bad TA could make any of Arfi's bigger classes challenging.
pls dont take this class. Lectures r so disorganized and exams are so lengthy. Your only grades are 3 pop quizzes and 3 exams. If you HAVE to take this class, make sure you have a good TA. This will ensure you have a good grade. I heard Kim is a good TA and the 2 female TAs are great too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's very difficult to be an intro-level course and is entirely dependent on your TA. You are only graded on a total of 6 things, 3 being pop quizzes. Depending on your TA you could either breeze by or almost fail the class. It's ridiculous how different people experience the same class depending solely on your TA.
DO NOT TAKE. Way too difficult and gave me way too much trouble for an intro level class. He and the TAs think and act like they're teaching some advanced class.
