he has a super heavy accent, which can be kind of hard to understand. as a freshman, this class seems hard!! it made my first quarter miserable. I got a 9/25 on the first midterm, studied more for the second one n got a class avg: 13/25. If you are thinking about taking this class for GE, stay away! this guy is hard! look for another professor!
Such a businessman, assigning his textbook to the class. Tests are horribie. I have studied my Axx off and still get a 48% on final. The avg is 49%. Honestly, I didn't learn anything from his class. I am happy that I didn't fail my class if he curves. If you have him, Good Luck man!!
i got an A for his class, but it was very challenging and hard earned.this despite my taking it with a superb econ background-having read tons of econ books and knowledgable about monetary policies and econ theories.his exams made me fully appreciate the fundamentals, and consequently i have greatly improved.avoid, though, if your basics are poor.
Avoid his class!!!! sooooooooo difficult.......what i learned from his class was only MB, MC in the whole quater.....only reading book is not enough....sample tests are useless because tests have more graph prob.....just don't take his class. if you do, then all i can say is (good luck)^n....
Sense of humor, but could be over limit if you are too nice. His tests go far beyond his lecture and textbook. Seems like he tries to hide something from you on the test, and then hehe, got you. Be prepared for the challenging work if you cannot avoid to take him.
Fortunately, he curved. I earned a 58% overall and got a "B+". (All 3 exams were MC strictly). Reading the textbook that he wrote himself was as unclear as his lectures. Also, he said we would be class the day before Thanksgiving at 6 PM. When less than 10% came, he cancelled and I was cheated out of time that would have been spent with family.
i have to say that he lectures very unclearly! Thru out the class, he was talking about MB and MC mostly. However, he made me understand a lot about how microeconomics work. He is boring, but if you have an interest in ECN, then you might find his knowledge about ECN to be helpful. His curves are CRAZY, you would get an A with 65%.
I disagree with most of the ratings here, since I think he's great. Essentially, the course starts at first principles and is carefully built up, sort of like an analysis course in math. His lecturing is very clear but also very dense. If you have a very abstract and systematic mind, you'll love it. Otherwise, maybe not so much.
Modjtahedi is rather easy if you just know what to do. The fact that he lectures basically word for word out of his self-written textbook makes lectures completely optional. Just follow along with the book and draw out what he explains in the book and in lectures. About a half day of studying before a test will earn you an A. Funny sense of humor.
teaching style unclear, and too quick!!
Classes were kind of dull, and I never went much but still did okay on the tests. The text book though was horrible, most unhelpful text book I've ever come across. The class is managable if you have a general understanding of basic economics. Really nice guy, I only recommened it though only if you need it.
The guy is a joke... I got an A in the class but stopped going to class after week 2. If you follow the book carefully, you'll do fine.
This guy is really not a very good teacher at all. He wrote his own book which he requires you to get for his class. Because of this the book does not help at all. His tests are very tricky but he does curve like crazy. I got an average of 47% in the class and I ended up with a C-. You can do well if you really work at it. Very heavy Indian accent.
He is very hard to understand, and he speaks of even the most difficult concepts as if they were trivial. Doesnt explain everything, you must look at the book. Practice tests easy, real tests hard! I worked and studied hard for all three, and ended up with 50% (which was a B-)
He wrote his own book, which is to the students' benefits, so u just have to pay a lot of attention to the textbook. Tests are horribly hard, but he curves insanely!! Practice exams r the easier version of the real stuff. Advice: bring the book to class, take notes right in ur book. It helps!!!!
HARD HARD HARD. Difficult to understand his accent as well. I struggled throughout every class.
i liked this professor. Sometimes his tests are challenging (it is a college course) but his curve is super fair. He tries to make concepts basic, which is helpful. The textbook is really good. I'm a pre-med major, so maybe the econ ppl are used to easier courses, but his course is standard and basic! and he is really helpful in office hours.
Caliber of teaching is definitely subpar. Beyond his accent, his lectures are often incoherent and rambling. Tests get progressively more difficult BUT he does grade his class on a curve; you're basically competing against the rest of the students in the class. All in all, would not recommend.
Damn, he was super hard. His tests are killers too. Tried my best, still got a C.
so hard to understand him! pulls stuff out of his pocket! his test are all trick questions!stuck with him for 2 miserable quarters and he made me hate econ. tests are much harder than readings and lectures. if you have Sandler or Vega as a TA ur bound to learn NOTHING. absolutely clueless and helpless! just get another professor if you can!
I should've listend to these ratings and never takne this class.. he knows a lot and hes a good teacher but his tests are SO HARD. his practice exams are NOT the same or even similar... as the acutal test. Class was BORING .. TAs were useless.. Take this class if you really know your economics very well.
My favorite professor I have had yet! Once you overcome his accent, his lectures are very interactive and more exciting than most other professor's lectures. I really enjoyed this class without being an econ major. Highly reccomended!
ridiculously hard TESTTSS!!! i regretted taking his class. should've made it P/NP instead.
TESTS ARE HARD AND LECTURES DO NOT HELP WITH THE MIDTERMS. THE TEST WERE THINGS WE NEVER SEEN BEFORE
the tests basically were the practice tests, which is awesome if there wasnt like 400 problems for each practice test. and in order to do well on the exams, you pretty much have to memorize the practice tests because, while his lectures are very informative and entertaining, they are not very helpful for the tests.
He's an amazing prof!! Easy exams and crystal clear and fun lectures!! My friend is taking him both for ECN 1A and 1B, I should of do the same!!!
Horrible professor. Seems to assume that students have been exposed to macroeconomic concepts before. Lecture notes are next to useless in preparing for exams. Our final consisted entirely of problems from the practice tests, which would have made the final a cinch, except that the practice tests had 50 problems apiece. Avoid at all costs!!!
got my worst grade in econ ever, he's not a hard professor but the things what he say is not helpful at all. the final was easy, all the questions are from the practice exam, which consists of at least 500 questions and only 50 re on the exam. the lecture notes are useless, the textbook is more helpful than the lecture. textbook is SUPER EXPENSIVE
Lectures are USELESS! Tricks you by saying that midterm and final questions are exact from practice tests but then he changes the questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM OF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE. You are better off skipping lectures and just reading the book. His curve does not help at all. It is completely UNFAIR!!! Take any other professor if you can.
i'll put it simply: his tests are ridiculous with tricky questions, and he made me absolutely loathe economics. i'm even switching my major because of him.
Took this professor over the summer, which makes the class faster and harder. It does require paying close attention, but he explains things extremely well and is very funny. I royally screwed up a final, and he went out of his way to make sure I had the grade I deserved. Awesome.
His class has no homework at all. Just 2 midterms and 1 final for your grade, all multiple choice. Each question is 1 percent of your grade, curves at the end of the quarter. REALLY REALLY REALLY hard class.. avoid if you can.
Your grade is comprised of 2 midterms (25 MC each) and 1 final (40 MC). He posts practice midterms online and they're the EXACT same ones on the midterms and finals so its important to study them. He includes some questions from his lectures in the midterms and finals so attending class is recommended if you want an A.
A professor you want to avoid!!! The lectures do not help with the tests. The book, which he wrote,is rarely useful. He has practice tests...and the questions on the midterm are the same exact questions on the practice test. Don't be fooled though because each practice test has 100 questions and there are 20 practice tests.
Knowledgeable and funny in lectures, but test ?s aren't exactly like what is covered in class or the examples in the book, which he wrote. Grade is based on 2 midterms and a final, and all ?s are given to you in practice exams, but there's a TON of practice ?s. Study those and it's pretty easy. If you do that you don't really need to go to class.
His class is made up of 2 midterms and 1 final. His practice tests are helpful b/c they appear exactly the same on his exams. He's funny at times, but his class was at MW 6:10-7:30pm, which is unfavorable. But his overall teaching is OK. He responds to students' questions and explains things alright. No HW in his class, which I really liked. Recom.
I guess he was a good teacher and maybe it was just me? anyway, the point of buying the textbook was really nothing, i think i cracked it open in an attempt to study for the second midterm. he's a friendly guy, i enjoyed the class, but the tests were hard. good luck with this class :)
his lectures = the textbook (which he wrote). you only need one or the other. the first midterm was ridiculously easy, class average was about an 85. then everyone failed the second midterm.
Very easy!!! funny lectures. Midterms = practice midterms, same for the final!! all questions and answers are provided before the exams, how can u fail lol
The lectures were extremely boring unless you have a deep passion for economics. Gave up going to lecture and useless discussion about half way through. The entire class is 2 midterms and 1 final, average on the first midterm was an A, then everyone failed the second one. Just too much information to adsorb, try to avoid
Pretty bad professor and class. Textbook is SUPER expensive, but his lecture notes are atright from it, so you only need one or the other. Should have been easy becuase questions on the midterms and finals are from the practice tests, but they-re tricky. AVOID him at all costs!!
First of all, the class is graded on a curve. (Top 20%A,next 30%B,next 30%C,then 10%D,10%F) Class has 2 midterms(30 MC questions each) and a final(40 MC questions). Thats it. The prof is boring, tests are difficult, and book costs ~$150(from publisher, bookstore doesnt carry his book-try to get a used one). Don't take this class unless you have to.
The lectures were very boring, but the midterm/final are quite easy if you just study the practice tests. Huge curve in the class, top 50 percent gets a B- atleast, and top 80 percent gets a C. Its really not that bad.
I dislike his teaching and book with a passion! First off, his book is completely USELESS. His teaching is not bad, but the things that you learn will NOT help you on your midterm. Not the same as practice, so i encourage you guys to study the practice midterms and find yourself a tutor and make sure you know how to solve each problem by heart.
This guy sucks. I took an online class with him and notice from the beginning that he was very un-organized. Lacks attention to details. Dates were posted in-correctly and I got 33 points out of a possible 3 points on one assignment. So that gave me a 1100% grade. Exams does not match what was covered in the book. Aviod if possible.
first of all his textbook is absolutely useless so dont buy it and its EXPENSIVE. however his lectures are pretty interesting as long as you stay attentive(probably not).. his practice tests are the same as the midterms and final so if you review those you should do fine. your grade is really up to how much you study on your own
He was an awful professor. His textbook is riddled with errors and typoes, and was made using MS word on low quality paper. His practice tests include over 100 questions, and aren't always relevant. Hard to understand, goes off on tangents too. Finally, the textbook cannot be bought from the bookstore and costs $110. Highly NOT recommended.
Very reasonable guy. Explains things a lot. Looking at the comments on this site i'm struck by how negative some people are. if you do the work, you'll be fine. most people who get burned are lazy and just try to memorize answers instead of learning concepts. Book has all the info you need
Great guy! Really showed a passion for the topic and teaching. Test questions are what you would expect from the practices you get (they seem like they are taken from the same pool of questions). The book is large, but thorough. Sets the table well with his lectures.
It really sucks he makes you buy a book he wrote. This guy is so soft-spoken, it doesn't make lectures at all interesting. He should provide more practice tests, since the material is not intuitive. I think he makes a dull subject even duller.
great guy! practice exams are great tools to study for the midterms and the finals. shows his passtion for teaching. it's a hard class to get an A but if you study you will earn a solid A. :)
Excellent guy! He makes everything simple and easy. He pays attention to math more in his lectures, and all the math stuff are clear and easy to understand. I had lots of fun in his class. What you need to do to get a good grade is reading the textbook and doing practice problems. He is super nice!
He was a nice guy, but sometimes could be a bit unclear and very dry. If you have a hard time staying interested in economics, then this class will be difficult. However, the practice tests are an excellent study tool.
Lectures are unclear and not mandatory. Practice tests are the best way in studying for the midterms and final. Easy midterms and final as long as you study the practice tests. No need to buy the book. He makes it easy to pass the class and funny guy. Depending on the overall class average, he might curve; sometimes by a lot.
His lectures are easy to follow, and as long as you do the practice tests, you will get a good grade. There is no homework either, and the textbook chapters are short, easy reads.
"Meet your new friend, and remember, he is a simple peasant." Lectures are easy to follow, if you can understand what he's saying. Buy the book and read it - he wrote the thing. Tests are multiple choice, but BEWARE - "None of the above" is ALWAYS an option. Do the practice tests and read the book, and you will do fine.
This professor is awesome! he explains ECON so easy and he's so funny that its hard to not learn anything. If you are good you can get the best grade without reading the book and just by doing the numerous practice tests. the curve is very generous too.
He sucks! though his lectures are easy to follow and he provides practice problems for each chapter, they are very confusing and there's a 100 questions per chapter! Not recommended!!!!
Econ is a hard subject for a lot of people, but this class you just learn to work the system. He makes it really easy for people to succeed, all of the test question are in the practice test. If you memorize the correct answers to the given questions you'll be fine.
He is really funny, but his class is incredibly boring. I took it because I was kinda interested, but not anymore. The exams are okay if you take the time to sit down and go through all the practice exams because all his questions come from there, no original bone in his body. But, he gives multiple chapters per exam, so it's stil kind of hard.
I don't know why people give this teacher a really bad rating. He is really clear and easy. I took his class over the summer, and it was still a breeze. As long as you go through the practice tests you'll get an A...his exam questions are exactly from it. AND there's a curve for the class. highly recommend.
At first he's clear, but as the material gets more complicated so do his explanations. Not a bad dude, but he can be hard to understand. If you wanna succeed, do the practice exams.
Oh gosh, this professor is almost unbearable. He tries to make jokes, but they just end with empty stares. Everyone's asleep in lectures, he basically repeats the textbook, and he makes things unnecessarily complicated. Suggest LOTS of textbook reading. If you do the powerpoints, textbook chapters, and practice tests, then you should be fine.
If you are taking this class as a GE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. most of the questions on the exams come from the practice exams. also the textbook is so clear! just read it and youll be fine! i got a 100 on the 1A final this quarter cause it was a joke! Also you will have alot of free time because if you read the book you dont even need to go to class
very reasonable class and great prof. He takes the time to explain things clearly. The people on this website who give him poor marks probably weren't smart enough to read the book and attending class. He provides lots of helpful practice questions that put everything in context. Best econ prof I have had in ugrad
Favorite prof in the department. Econ can be a challenging topic but he makes it interesting. His lectures are well worth attending and all the necessary material is also outlined in the book. if you put in the work you'll do well and learn the topic completely. highest marks for this prof
Awesome Professor. He's seriously really helpful and makes lectures interesting. He's sincere and tries his best. Loved this class and highly recommend taking him!
I do not recommend taking ECN 1B with him if you have a choice. He did not have the midterm ready on time and did not take responsibility for it. His lecture is convoluted and tough to understand, and the book is expensive and not available at the bookstore, and is full of typos and not well made. Overall the worst teacher I've had at Davis so far.
Good professor overall. Lectures and study guides posted on the websites make studying very easy. Both his lectures and his book were made easy for those unexperienced in economics. Mildly entertaining humor during class. The book is very expensive and full of typos, though he wrote it.
Teacher hard to understand, never use the textbook (which he wrote and is around $200). Very hard to follow at times, and goes through powerpoints too quickly. Might be retaking calss.
His accent is difficult to decipher at first but then you get used to it. he does know what he is talking about though. the book is expensive and not needed. the study guides were very helpful but the tests are challenging. the average on one of the midterms was a D-. he does curve the class though!
The class is very interesting and so is the professor. However, the grading system is awful. Your grade is literally based on 100 multiple choice. The tests are very tricky and HARD!
The lectures are clear, if you can understand him. Although the material isn't difficult to understand, his tests do not really reflect principles of Economics, they focus on very specific scenarios. To succeed in this class I would highly recommend memorizing practice test questions, as that is the only way to get a solid grade on the tests.
This was a challenging class. I am moderate at econ, and I only took this class since it was a prereq for me major. I highly suggest not taking this guy. In my years at Davis, I've never had such a difficult time understanding one of my professors. Scraped by with a B, but this guy is an idiot in my opinion.
At the beginning, his lectures were simple anc clear, although as the materials get harder so does his lectures. His midterms were okay, but his final seemed a bit tricky. His test questions focused a bit too much on specific scenerios. 1 test question answered wrong = -1 % of overall grade. Lectures can be a bit dry and boring sometimes.
Lectures were pretty boring. Test were quite confusing and hard. Curve helps a lot however. Would not recommend him for a GE credit. Tough grade to earn.
First test relatively easy. Second test and final were ridiculous.
well, I think he is very confusing, and drags out things that shouldnt be that hard. He makes it hard =(
I don't know why people dislike him and think he is hard. Yes, he does have an accent, but he repeats things all the time. And if he doesn't, all you gotta do is speak up and ask; he'll gladly repeat it. He also gives you all the test questions from his test bank, so it's just a matter of taking the time to do them. You'll get an A if you do.
If you've taken AP Econ in high school, this class will be beyond easy! If not, it might be a tad confusing, as he doesn't explain it very well unless you already know it. Aside from that, he is the NICEST professor ever! I accidentally missed the final exam for the class (stupid, I know), and he let me come back in the next day and make it up!
The lecture should not be that hard, but he goes deeply sometimes. It would be really helpful for those who really interested in Economics, to me its hard.
This is the worst teacher ever. You have to pay $200 for a book full of typos & grammar errors that he wrote. It's a word doc on construction paper. He gives you 1000 questions to memorize for the exam that are all mixed up and duplicates with different answers. Econ majors don't even know where he's getting this stuff from. GPA SINKER!!!
Do not take this class simply for GE. It's pretty complex for a intro class, and being interested in Econ will help. The tests are fairly hard if you don't read the book and do his practice problem (he writes both). The book is a rip off. It's $130 with some typos...at least it's a fairly easy read though.
He is very hard to understand. He has a good sense of humor and tries to lighten up the mood in the lecture hall. DEFINITELY do the practice tests. I would suggest actually learning to do the problems rather than memorizing the answers. Discussion is not mandatory but can be helpful. Go to office hours! Textbook is not mandatory if you go to class.
If you're good in math, this class will be like taking a high school class. Just read the whole text and work through the practice problems and youll be fine. His book is a very easy read. Even if youre not doing too hot in the class, you can do better on the final exam and he will give you the final exam score if its better than the rest combined
Anyone who thinks this guy is hard or confusing is a obviously not paying attention in class. He barely has an accent at all and his lectures as well as his book are very clear. His expectations are clearly laid out in the class. Its a good course.
While professor Modjtahedi is funny and clearly a nice guy, his tests are difficult and it's hard to prepare for them if you're lost. It's extremely important to understand concepts rather than just memorizing the answers from the practice tests.
He is a really funny guy with a litte accent. If you pay attention to the class and do the plactice, you will be fine. I have no iead why people dislike him. Overall the class is easy. I got an A. Recommend him.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!! really funny guy...has a persian accent but it's nice. i can never forget his, "meet your new friend" my response, "trust me professor i already have enough" lol. God im really going to miss that class!!! PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
EASY!
As long as u keep up and put ur time into studying the study guides....u will get an A without a doubt
He is a brilliant economist, but the class has been watered down and homogenized for the masses. Can't understand concepts because he provides such a tertiary overview. Most questions on tests come directly from study guide powerpoints. He is very personable and lectures humorously, which aids in the topics being difficult.
His accent isn't too bad. He has a surprisingly good sense of humor, and if you attend class you don't need to buy the book. He puts up study guides for each chapter, along with questions. If you can answer those questions and understand the concepts, you'll be golden. However, his curve can make or break your grade. A good TA would be helpful
Not worth the effort as GE. $200 dollar book filled with typos and grammar issues. Money better spent on required major classes. Humor or no humor, it's not funny when you're looking at your GPA after the class. Grades on a ranking system because apparently they MUST fail a certain number of students. Horrible accent and clarity during lecture.
One of the best profs I've had at Davis. He sends out powerpoint slides before each lecture and post practice questions for each chapter. Exams are straightforward and if you do the practice questions you should be okay. Lectures are clear and informative. If you go to every day you shouldn't need to buy the expensive text book.
Worst professor I've ever had at Davis! Absolutely incomprehensible cause of his accent not to mention his mic never worked. The study guides are completely ridiculous ranging from 60-70 ques for each chapter. Brought down my GPA, avoid at all costs!
In order to understand the course concepts you must attend lectures, review lecture slides, work on practice exams, and refer to his text. You have to work for your grade and trust me its worth it. All the resources are given to you, and you have to take advantage in all of them. With his sense of humor he keeps you awake and alert in class.
The professor is okay as long as you understand what he is talking about because you can go through the course without buying the textbook. One thing mention-worth is try to know how good your classmates. If your classmates are good, getting an A won't be as easy as it should.
Thank God for his loving mercy, I passed this class. I can't figure out how else I managed to pass. The class is hard. Do the readings and practice Q's before lecture. Ask the T.A's 4 help. He gives you a study guide of about 1,000 questions that could probably be on the test.Unless you have Photographic memmory, better take it seriously.BTW pray!
No HW. Just 2 midterms and final make up the entire grade. His lectures make the concepts clear and the models easy to understand. Completely possible to do well without ever buying the book. He also posts slides and tons of practice questions online. Tests are very fair if you use the many resources he gives you. Also he's pretty funny.
WONDERFUL professor! His lectures are very clear, with great power points. He equips students with everything they need to succeed in the course: online text book (free and easy to read), lecture slides, extra study guide slides, and practice problems for each chapter. Great sense of humor, very smart guy.
The class was a bit difficult. Concepts take a bit of time to learn but he does a very good job of explaining. His accent isn't too bad, but if you really can't understand then just sit in the front of the class. Tests questions are study guide questions so it's pretty fair. He knows what he's talking about. Take it if you're interested in Econ!
His class is not very easy, but it is easy to pass this class. Lecture are helpful but is really long. To many practice problems need to study. I hope he can make the study slide shorter.
Provided textbook, study guide, ppt slides for free online! Added the class a day b4 midterm and failed but he replaced that grade with my 2nd midterm's grade after an appeal! Study guides are true to the midterm. Has slight accent but broke down concepts very clearly with relatable examples. Do ALL studyguides provided and you're guaranteed an A!
Really hard to have a good grade in his class. He provide thousand of questions to us!!! Hard to understand his lecture. If you don't go to his lecture, it will be very hard for you to pass this class.
He is a funny guy. The class can get confusing at times, but as long as you study his practice exams you should be fine.
He needs to have quizzes in discussion or homework to help his students boosts up their grades. I thought this class was horrible and I would've liked some extra points to help my grade. I would not take him again. If I wanted an online class, because it seemed like one, then I would've signed up for one. Would not recommend him at all.
He's really nice and funny. But even though his tests are pretty similar from study guides he gives out, it can get pretty hard if you have a lot going on. It's a very boring class, I doodled a lot. The hard part was just having his midterms the day before more difficult midterms, then you'll be pretty screwed.
I thought he was a good professor overall. The study questions that he provided were a really good tool to learn the material. The class did take a lot of work though. I wouldn't say it was overwhelmingly difficult, you just need to put in some time. I think the timing of the midterms is what made it really hard for me.
His teaching isn't the greatest and he has a thick accent, but he definitely gives you all the tools to be successful in his class. Posts powerpoints and study guides are extremely similar to the tests. You can easily get a good grade in his class as long as you put in enough effort. He's also more than happy to answer questions
He is a great professor. He definitely makes microeconomics as easy as possible. His chapter readings are very straight forward and help and along with his study guides. Do his study guides and understand the concepts well and guarantee you will get an A.
I cannot stand this guy. First of all, I had no idea what he was talking about in lecture- maybe because I couldn't understand him. Homework is time consuming, the midterm was okay, and the final was near impossible. The average on the final was a D-... I managed to pull a B- though. I would avoid taking his class, but if you have to, you'll live.
Professor Modjtahedi is a very nice man with a tolerable accent. There is only homework once a week and it takes about an hour. Everything is provided even a study guide. The study guides are all that is needed to get an A+ in the class. The midterm and final are oversimplified in comparison with the homework. Not much effort needed and an easy A+.
Use his study guides. The final was hard
He doesn't teach well and the curve is high because god knows why. Try to take with a different professor unless you love econ.
The class, like all ecn 1a classes, is on a curve. As long as you study and do the HW (which is useless in helping you prepare for the exams), you will do well. Put in the effort, and you will see good results because other people don't work hard enough. The curve doesn't hurt you in the end. Final is harder than midterm. Use study guides!
He is a good professor. However, he CAN and WILL CURVE DOWN if the class avg is high, as it was in my class. Final is MUCH, MUCH harder than the midterm; don't let it make you overconfident! Do all the study guides on SmartSite (as he pulls 99% of his questions almost directly from them) and you'll be fine. He's pretty funny too :)
Not engaged. Lectures are stale slides (with cheesy animations) and drawn-out audience solicitations. Tests are MC. Online HW unhelpful b/c wrong answers identified after deadline, and only 2 attempts allowed. Book is verbose, typo-riddled. Do study guides twice, they're the sole useful resource. Don't skip section, TAs will be your best friends.
Okay class. Lectures were dull and was hard to attend. However, provided textbooks and slides online. HW is a killer if you don't have friends since you only get 2 tries. Curve is also pretty difficult, would curve down if you're in the B range. An OK class.
It was hard to pay attention because the material isn't engaging, although he does try with his presentations. His accent can be difficult to understand, but sitting in the front helps. The class got confusing. The homework was not helpful but the study guides were. I wouldn't take this class again.
Can't understand him past the first two rows (he only really engages with those anyways). Homework is pretty impossible: he gives you two attempts to compete it and does not allow you to see which questions you got wrong (if you get an 8/10, you have to guess which two you got wrong). Avoid if possible
You must pay vey close attention to him to understand what he says. The written material that he publishes helps. Exams were entirely free response-based and thus challenging, but were overall pretty straightforward.
Overall, he was a pretty awful lecturer. Lectures were long and confusing, and the only thing that made them interesting is that he is somewhat funny. If you want to get an A, go to every possible office hour of the TAs, get 100% on the homework, and study a lot for the final. He also puts up study guides that are nearly identical to the tests.
This professor has very boring and unhelpful lectures. The homework assignments were very different from lecture, and you should do well on them. The final was worth way too much. Study hard for the final if you have this professor, and if possible, take this class with someone else. (Mind you, economics is not my favorite subject).
His introductory classes are pretty tough. A lot of info in one lecture. Homework is hard. If you go to your TA office hours, they will go over homework pretty well. He is a nice man, but a tough professor. Will definitely show you if you're cut out for econ or not.
Very well organized Like his online lectures
The class starts easy but gets a lot harder fast. He teaches econ in a weird way according to the TA. Definitely read the pdfs of his textbook that he puts online, they are helpful. It was a hard class definitely. If you need help you go to the TAs or the free econ tutoring, the teacher wasn't that helpful in my opinion.
He has an accent, but I didn't think he was that difficult to understand. The class is curved so that the top 20% gets an A, bottom 10% gets an F. Lectures are sort of superficial compared to the tests and homework. Imo the second midterm and the final were a lot more difficult than the homework.
I had never taken econ before in highschool and decided to take it as a GE. I am extremely happy with Modjtahedi as a teacher. Very clear in lecture and focuses on students understanding material in the class. Incredibly easy exams because he posts so many practice problems with explanations. No busy work. Easiest and most interesting GE yet.
He is funny, but his lecture is not organized. I took AP Econ in High school and from community college just for jun because I loved them. But his lecture was not even well organized as I learned from the CC. His explanation are difficult to understand. I messed up first exam, but then he made 2nd exam harder, which I failed.
Easy Exams. Homework is harder than the exams. He posts his textbook online for free and posts about 30-100 practice problems with explanations for each chapter, Midterm and final questions taken from practice problems. Easiest A if you are in any way a hard worker. This class took up half the time as my English class and a third compared to chem.
If you do the study guides, you will do perfectly fine. The tests are almost exactly the study guides. People give him a bad rap, he's actually hilarious in class. I really enjoyed it, just get past the accent.
He uses a bell curve and his tests are short (30 MC for midterms, and 50 MC for final) so your grade will depend heavily on how well the rest of the class does. Got a C on the first midterm, got A+'s on the second midterm and final, ended with an A overall. The key is to doing well is to not only do the study guides but also really understand them
Once you get past his accent, you will enjoy his lecture. Sit in the front row. His tests aren't tough, but reading every page of his textbook, highlighting the important parts are essential. Also, doing the study guide is very helpful to get ready for the exam. He grades everyone base on the ranking system, don't lose points on hw and midterms.
I had high hopes for this class. I attended every lecture I found that it was super difficult to understand this teacher. The lectures consist of complex and confusing slides and explanations of concepts that were incomprehensible. The TA really saved me so make sure you get a good TA. Homeworks have many errors. Be prepared to really work hard.
I took his class for both 1A and 1B, he's a great lecturer. He's funny, the powerpoints have lots of visuals, and he uses plenty of examples to apply the concepts. There is weekly homework that could be a little tough, but discussion helps with that. 2 MC midterms; but he posts super helpful study guides with similar questions to the exams.
His lecture is really really great. His class and slides are very coherent and inspirational. He often use interesting examples to explain those difficult econ terms and ideas. His lecture is also pretty funny. but he often speaks in low voice and has a huge accent so pay enough attention. Overall he is a really great lecturer.
Overall OK, but not the best option. Lectures can be pretty dull at times but he makes the material clear and understandable. Unfortunately it can be hard to hear him, so make sure you sit in the front half of the class. Homework is probably the most challenging (and frustrating) part of the course; more so than the exams.
I regret taking this course. I'd only recommend this class to math/business/Econ majors. Math is by far my weakest subject, so the homework killed me. It's fill in the blank with ambiguous numbers. When the he was asked for help, he said and I quote; "it should be no problem for Smart UC Davis Students". Sorry I'm not good at Math?
very easy to pass, and the professor is very nice
Do not recommend. Has a huge accent and is unclear during lecture. Lecture slides are confusing and info lacking. Funny guy but not a good at teaching. Have to learn on your own to do good on tests.
His accent really is not that bad as people say, it's mostly that he does not speak loud enough. The material is dry, but I found it interesting (since it's my major). His lectures are clear. If you're on top of the work, this class should not be a problem. Go to the TA's office hours, they really help a lot on the homework since it's a bit hard.
To be honest, I overestimated the ease of this course in general. I got A's on the two midterms and received a C+ on the final and it killed my grade. Personally, I really hate accents so I couldn't hear him until I got to the front. However, he makes econ approachable for anyone even if you're not good at math. He provides helpful study guides!
Be good at math, especially manipulating several numbers at once. Homework is HARD - at the time of writing, it consisted of 10 free-response numerical questions per week, and you would have 3-4 attempts, but each attempt didn't let you know even which question you did wrong! Tests aren't nearly as bad, so long as you do his online practice tests.
Hard, confusing, unspecific, among other things. The guy is nice and funny, but the class is not as it should be. He doesn't directly have anything from study guides or lecture of the tests, and they are really hard. Beware.
I absolutely loved taking Microecon with Modjtahedi. I thought he was hilarious and was pretty clear in class as long as you actually made the effort to pay attention. I know some people had difficulty getting past his accent but he seemed pretty clear to me. Overall, one of my favorite teachers!
His class is so funny! Once you overcome his accent, you will enjoy his lecture. He gives you all his lectures ppt which is really useful. His exam is pretty easy, if you do all studyguide and read his ppt you will get good grades.
This is one of the hardest class I've taken in Davis. The professor is very unclear. The midterms and homeworks are way harder than the examples he gives in class. He tries to be funny and the accent is not that bad but his lectures are still pretty boring. I hated this class and he grades very harshly.
Multiple choice for all exams. midterm questions are mostly from the studyguide, so do them!! he is pretty clear and provides textbook reading to help you understand the material. class is fast paced, so don't procrastinate. the final was harder than the midterms. do lots of calculation practices!
Good teacher. He gives out comprehensive material, and his study guides really help you understand the course matter. Some of the test questions are a little nitpicky and ask about tiny details, so make sure you study slides and the book thoroughly. Homework is 20%, the rest is the tests. Practice as much as you can to get an A in the class.
Lectures are unclear. His head is up in the clouds when you engage with him. Tests included concepts that were barely taken apart the day before, and he expects you to make FULL sense of it in a ridiculously short time period. Success in the class depends largely on the TAs and making sense of his lecture notes. Do not take him.
His classes are not really clear and helpful. He cannot explain things clearly and when it comes to grading, he is a tough grader. His pronunciation is bit difficult to understand as well.
His textbook chapters are awesome, read those along with doing the study guides and you'll get A's or B's on the tests. His lectures aren't great, he kind of mumbles so it can be hard to hear him and pay attention. Once you realize how he tests, they aren't that difficult. Overall he's a good professor.
This was probably the worse class I've ever taken at Davis. The material isn't too hard to understand but his tests were terrible, "NO CALCULATOR" but so many calculations. If you're not the best at math and taking this to test out Econ, you'll come out hating it. HW is nothing like the tests, and don't even dream about tutor help, they don't know.
Even though he mumbles in class, the lecture slides are posted online so it's not to bad, altough the slides themselves are not that helpful and look like they were made in the 90s. Overall, I wouldn't take it again, especially because I got the impression that the homework and tests mostly focused on the math formulas, and had nit-picky questions.
He's a good lecturer. He cares about his students and is a very interesting lecturer. His exams were very similar to old ones which helped. Wording can be a bit weird on questions but otherwise his tests are pretty fair
Very bad
lectures have nothing to do with homework, must read the textbook to understand homework and even then its hard because he wrote the book himself, terrible lecturer, so boring, TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD because there are tons of trick questions and weirdly worded sentences. do not recommend. cannot teach. good curve at the end of the year though
Thank you
Nice guy, but he's just not a good lecturer. His accent is hard to understand and the only thing more confusing than his slides is his textbook. His wording on exams is hard to understand and riddled with mistakes. His weekly HW assignments take forever and this is coming from someone whose taken ECS40, 50,60 and 122B. Not recommended for ECON1A.
Very confusing as to what you will be tested on. Read the book because the practice problems are mostly what's on the test. Lectures move fast and are unclear. Homework has nothing to do with tests and is a waste of time but mandatory for a good grade. Advise taking any other professor for econ if it's an option.
He is nice and interesting. The lecture is easy to understand. He posts textbook and slides online. All three TAs are helpful, and help with assignments in discussion and office hour. One assignment on Canvas per week with five attempts. All easy calculation questions, as long as you have basic math knowledge. Strong curve. Take his 1A if possible!
Lectures are very confusing. He's so nice but not a good lecturer at all. Tests are hard and nothing like the homework. the homework takes forever. tests are confusing and weirdly worded and his text book is even more confusing and unhelpful. However he curves the entire class at the end so that's helpful
In a 500 students class, only 200 register this one. Books cover everything, but its 70 dollars. There are also some exceptions in the exams weighting 10 percent. This probably only students who go to the lecture can get correct answers. Lectures are literally bad, for his strong accent and weird word choices. This man RUINs my interests in ECN!
He has heavy accents but is an interesting lecturer. You will get an A as long as you go to the lecture or carefully read the textbook. There's homework with 10 questions once a week. Midterms and final are fair. Recommend to take as GE class. :)
Very nice and funny, and he is well-spoken. Notices you if you come to every class. The practice exams and homeworks are very helpful for the midterms and final. The class is curved, so you only need to be in the top 20% for an A.
Pretty straightforward class, don't need the textbook since he bases all his slides off the textbook. Two midterms and a final, 10 hw questions every week. Attend your discussion sections because they're crucial to you understanding the hw. Overall good professor
Great professor! His lectures are not dense at all, but requires some understanding. There are 10 hw assignments with unlimited attempts (although you need to put some effort in it) Be aware of the word questions on midterms! Also, for his class, there is no textbook required and he provides helpful practice exams.
This teacher is a non-native English speaker and his knowledge of English is not what I would consider proficient. This makes test and homework questions weird and much harder to understand than they should be. Second, he directly misinformed me about a homework due date, and homework format which caused me to lose many points. nice prof, bad class
Please AVOID this class at all cost. I'm an econ major and I hated this class so much! I wanted to change my major because of him. The test is nothing like what you do in class and the hw doesn't even correlate. Just read his textbook, but please don't take this class!! It's honestly too much work and studying for a easy ge/lower div.
Dont take ecn with him... the practice exams are nothing like the real ones, the questions seem to be tricky on purpose. He also mumbles while he speaks so understanding him during lectures is difficult. Homework has nothing to do with the exams, which are 80% of the final grade.
The professor grades in such a way that the top 20% get As, the next 30% Bs, next 30% Cs, and so on. The homework was helpful exam preparation, and all homework questions were explained clearly during discussion. The professor sometimes talks quietly, so it is hard to understand what he is saying. He also rushed the last chapters of the course.
Im not an econ major so thats why I struggled but take this class with anyone else. He is a really nice guy, but has a strong accent and lectures are confusing with strange word choices. There are really hard homeowork assignments every week. There is no curve, he just passes the top 80 % of the class and drops the bottom 20%.
He's a really nice guy but not that great of a professor. Want to succeed? sit in the front to hear him cause his microphone never works, do all the practice questions cause they are very similar to the actual test, go to econ tutoring for hw help. His lectures are all from his book that costs $90
Despite microphone issues, he is a really great professor. Very helpful when asking questions and most of the practice questions are similar to those in the actual test. One of the easier professors I have had as a Man Econ major. Would definitely recommend as long as he fixes his microphone. He genuinely cares for his students. Just do the work.
His exams are very challenging, but not unreasonable. I think his lecturing style and knowledge of the material is adequate. However, his HW assignments are very, very frustrating to deal with, due to the convoluted and awkward way that he asks questions. Plan to spend a lot of time doing them.
I took his ECN 1B in Fall 2019 His class is so easy. You just read the lecture slide and you can do the homework and tests. I do not see why many people do not even understand the material. A 90 is sufficient to get A+, and 86 is the borderline for A.
HWs hard because you click submit and your grade appears but it clears all your answers. You don't know which you got wrong and have to refill them to try again. Uses his own textbook which is v helpful, but lectures were not and I'd zone out. Not the best professor at all, but gives you the means to succeed. Still don't think I understand econ
I enjoyed the reading material
Buy the book. I didn't I regret it I could have done better if i had the book. Why? because his book has a lot of the information he will use on exams and such. Buy book write every note down cuz he will ask you for things that weren't on the slides. discussion was good tho.
I enjoyed his class. If you study and do the assignments, youll get a good grade. Very helpful over email. Accessible at office hours. Enjoyed his class/
He is so sweet! He's a really nice and caring professor. The lectures get a little boring sometimes but the textbook covers everything you need to know. I recommend paying attention during discussion and attending office hours for homework help. The exams are challenging but if you study well enough, you should be prepared.
Good class! Organized, and educational
He's a nice professor and the textbook is optional but I found it to be helpful. The TA's are super helpful when it comes to the homework because the homework can be kind of tricky sometimes. His tests are also tricky at times, but I'm not an Econ major, so I struggled a little more. But his slides are organized and really interactive.
I took ECN1B for 6 weeks during a Summer Session. It was a lot of material for 6 weeks, so I recommend taking this during a regular quarter. 5 homework assignments worth 20% and 3 exams worth 80% of your grade. This class was not curved, and everything was straightforward. Lectures are recorded and office hours are pretty much a good time for hw.
His grading scale was somewhat unfair: 2 Midterms and the Final worth 80% and 5 Homeworks worth 20% of our final grade. His lecture slides didn't contain a lot of useful information to answer questions from the homeworks. We didn't use a book, so we pretty much didn't have anything other than lectures to get answered any questions we might have.
I do not like the way that grading is done where only the top 20% get As and so on, because if the grade was calculated based on percent I would have had an A which seems unfair to those who are working hard and at most can only get a B just because so many other students are doing well. Professor is hard to understand at times
I took this class over the summer so it was a little packed but nothing too difficult. We had weekly HWs (5 overall) along with 2 midterms and 1 final. The lectures were great and the lecture slides were all you need for exams: be thorough with them and you'll get an A. There was no curve but averages were relatively high too.
Worst proffesor you could take at davis, all exams are extremely difficult and nothing like practice exams. He just goes on and on in lectures when they have nothing to do with the actual homework or test questions. Class was such a drag and even though the average was so low he had no curve, not sympathetic at all during covid!
I personally liked the Prof because he was really accessible outside of class and was pretty organized compared to others. Non-econ majors in my class definitely struggled, but I feel like if you just put a little bit of effort and don't procrastinate on your HW, you should be just fine. Just understand the concepts and do lots of practice problems
I honestly really liked his teaching style and thought that he was very elaborate when explaining concepts. However, I think youll struggle in this class if youre not an econ major unless you put in loads of effort. Discussion with the TAs is incredibly helpful so make sure to go to them. Pretty solid choice for 1B as long as you work hard.
I really enjoyed his class, he was very nice and the work wasn't that hard. He explains the concepts very well and his slides are very well put. I am an Electrical Engineer major and I really enjoyed his class. Looking forward to taking ECN 1A with him in the future.
naw man. he is so not nice. we email him stuff and he replies in "ok" or "no" and that is so sucky. his lectures are okay, his TAs are amazing but he? nay not so. his practice exams are NEVER like the exams. the midterms are made to fail you. no curve. his word choice makes everything harder to comprehend. his book is $90 and i didn't like it.
I do not recommend. (I'm an Econ Major and I learned more from high school) Every lecture was a battle to stay awake. Barely anything he mentioned was on any of our homework assignments (besides ch 1). I learned more from TA's. HW:20% of your grade and Exams:80%. Out of 40 questions in the practice exam probably 2 are similar in the midterm/ exams.
I enjoyed his sense of humor and lecture style. I think the overall difficulty is pretty average for the department. I had more trouble with the homework assignments than anything; super tedious. Exams were tricky, but that is the status quo for the major. His curb was generous.
His lectures were mainly just reading off his slides, so I stopped going after a couple weeks. I also felt that nothing he described in lecture matched what was on the hw or exams... and the hw took ages, even working with a friend. Nothing short of a painful class, and I'm glad I passed so I wouldn't have to endure it again. (taken winter 2019)
Had him for ECN135. His lectures are incredibly long and hard to focus on. The TAs' discussions are more helpful than his lectures. Additionally, his grading scale is based on a ranking system. At the end of the course, he curved down.
Don't choose! I can hardly hear what he said. And his class is long and boring. Homework is not difficult but you need a long time finish it. Midterms and Final are all cumulative, which means a lot to review. I think his TAs taught better. If have to choose, you can attend discussion to get clearer knowledges.
He uses a ranking system that is unfair for people who do average. bottom 20% don't pass, his lectures are boring and questions on the test are way too complicated for no reason. tutors at the tutoring center could barely help me
I personally do not feel as though he explains the concept ideas he expects students to know. I have gone to office hours numerous times. Since they can't give the answer they don't explain it well. Sometimes they don't even know how to do the problem. All the professor says is "its not that hard". No help. His overall % to fail people is messed up
You can skip lectures to self-study and get a decent grade even though the slides are pretty bad. The hour and 30 minutes in class can feel wasted. Tests are kind of hard, but he curves based on how your final grade compares to the rest of the class, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on your perspective.
The midterms are tricky and there might be some error on it. Don't recommend to study textbooks but rather study everything on the lecture. The grading system is wierd which only makes top 20% of people get an A- or above. Grading based on homework and exams. Homework has 10 attempts which is easy for everyone to get full credit. Easier finals.
Good class, graded on a curve (top 10% get A, next 10% A-, bottom 10% fail etc.) Accent a bit hard to understand but it didnt bother me too much. 1 homework a week and if you do it and put in the work, the midterms wont be too hard. 2 midterms and a final. I got 100% on homeworks and 85% average on tests and finished with an A-. Lecture recorded
Bagher is an amazing professor. The workload in the class is equal to none. All the papers are MCQs making it extremely easy to solve the paper in time.
Professor Modjtahedi is a great professor. I usually attend his classes with my friend Hamid. Modjtahed is an exceptional lecturer with great knowledge and wonderful teaching abilities. The lectures are extremely inspirational and are very informative. If you want to learn everything you have to actively participate in all classes.
I took this class at the suggestion of my friend Hamid.Modjtahed is a wonderful professor. His class is very informative. Materials are delivered in an interactive and clear manner that facilitates understanding. I am happy Hamid recommended Prof Modjtahed class to me and I recommend Prof Modjtahed class to other students.
I took it during the summer session and the overall course grade composes of 6 homework, 2 midterms and a final. No recording, the slides include everything you need to know for the exam. The discussion section is helpful. Prof is interesting but sometimes I cannot hear him clearly.
I had heard that this class is very hard but from the first day I started loving it. Hamid Modjtahed i is a very competent lecturer and is very knowledgeable. If you do not attend the classes the material may see taunting but if you attend the class Modjtahed guides you through all difficult points. Modjtahedi is awesome.
I took the class during summer Hamid. Modjtahed is an amazing lecturer. I would recommend Professor Modjtahed because Modjtahed is a very thoughtful instructor.hamid. Modjtahedi gives a lot of great criticism, but isn't condescending. Modjtahed is also very encouraging and makes himswlf available to the students. Attention lectures is crucial
Does not explain how to do the homework/ test problems in lecture at all. most test questions are calculations that he never explains how to do and doesn't explain on his lecture slides.HW is also ridiculous because they have a million parts yet don't indicate which ones you got wrong. Will never take him again I'm shocked his rating is this high
The worst GE level class I've ever taken. His tests were crazy hard and he was unhelpful in preparing us for it, he just read off the slides. His best idea was making class participation a stupid hard quiz so it didn't matter if you came to class just to fail it. Btw his syllabus requires the bottom 20% of the class to fail regardless of you grade.
Follows his textbook heavily! Gives practice for exam questions. Just beware of the grading (class ranking).
Never this professor because the lecture is never helpful with awful homework assignments while the entire class is based on self-study because the professor is so bad. Talks with a accent and hard to hear while failing 20% of the class no matter ur grade is.
Worst class I have ever taken, bad attitude, and be ready to study by yourself
Funny lecturer. Lecture Slides include everything you need to know to do the weekly HW and tests. Just go to class and pay attention and you'll pass. The class material isn't that hard. Only downside to his class is the ranked grading system. Top 20% get an A, next 30% get a B, next 30% get a C, and bottom 20% fail. Don't miss a single HW.
He explains things very clearly, lots of opportunities to ask questions. I found the hw pretty frustrating but you get ten attempts. Lots of practice questions for every exam.
this professor does no in class examples and just reads of slides. hard to understand. all self studying ggs major requirement
I am a tutor for his principle of macroeconomics class and I strongly recommend you not to this his class. Weekly quizzes are confusing because of the way he word things and it costs you many hours to get the right answer. And he has his own textbook so the order of how he teaches is very different from others. Consider taking other professors.
Do not take this professor. He makes econ more complicated than it is. His lectures are awful. The HWs (40% of your grade) are insanely difficult. He doesn't record lectures. He explains concepts very badly. His curve is very strange. If you can, take another economics professor. Everyone that I know wishes they had a different professor.
Don't take as a GE! He contradicts himself all the time, so you basically have to teach yourself. There is weekly HW that usually take about 3 hours to complete. When you ask him questions, he will not explain/clarify it to you because he believes you should know the answer. Very hard to hear/understand him. Lectures are the worst!!
I love Prof Modjtahedi! As long as you participate and go to office hours the class is super fun and interesting. He is very funny and I would love to take more of his classes in the future.
people cheat on tests uses bell curve weird homework
Took the class while had already studied Levitt, Romer and shaheed Hamid. Modjtahed I was the best professor I have ever seen. There is no doubt that that some topics for this class are among the toughest concepts. But Modjtahed I just knows how to explain tough concepts. Wonderful!
Take this professor! Material was quite simple compared to upper division courses! Although sometime it is hard to understand him(language barrier), but he is funny and does his best for everyone to understand the concepts! All exams were mehh but do able if you come to lecture! Definitely come to lecture! Do not skip! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
He doesn't even teach. You have to teach yourself.
This professor teaches in a funny way. I do homework without his lectures but with slides.Often times I find it hard to keep track of his voice unless I am sitting in the first three rows. A clear advantage of choosing this professor is that his midterm/final exams are all multiple choices. His homework contains many abstract questions.
DO NOT CHOOSE HIM!! 1. His grading is based on your rank in class, so you MUST study very hard to beat your classmates. If you want A or higher, you need to be in the top 10%. 2. His sound is VERY BLUR and UNABLE to understand. You need to spend many time guessing what he is saying. 3. He has an in class quiz, and it counts as credits in your rank.
Professor was very doable, but was hard to understand in lecture. Homework was relatively easy and exams were not too bad. Class was graded on a down curve so it could screw you over in the end.
hard to understand words he said. accidentally release midterm questions and answers
He has an awful pronunciation which makes his classes very hard to understand. He also has a very strict grading system, only the top 10% can get an A, and the next 105 can get an A-. Come on, this is a GE class, that's too strict.
Don't take his class, he gives really bad lectures and honestly he really should retire, he shouldn't be taking up so many resources anymore
This professor is fantastic and I loooooove him!
Do not recommend taking. His heavy accent on top of being old makes his lectures very hard to sit through. Lectures are not recorded and extra credit did nothing. His lectures are also not helpful when it comes to the test. Textbook is your only hope and there are many different chapters. Homework will take 3 hours minimum sometimes twice a week.
This class is very hard to pass, professor uses his own grading system based on your ranking in the class. He doesn't allow access to textbook, instead uploads sections of it to canvas. He has a very heavy accent that's hard to understand. Lectures are mandatory for points and dont miss a single hw because it will set your grade back significantly.
This is the best I've ever taken in my entire life. Easy A, great feedback, clear dictation, explains thoroughly, homework doesn't matter at all, very loud voice, drip is immaculate,
To have fun in this class, you need to take it seriously. You will do plenty of studying and will most likely be frustrated with most of the homework. But if you put in the time and try to understand the material, then you will enjoy the teacher and the class. Give him a chance!
He's is a professor who's good at introducing you to new concepts that you are foreign to, but you have to do a lot of additional self study and googling to actually understand everything he's talking about and get good scores on hw and tests. Theres a lot of mixed reviews on him and if you are not a self study person then I recomend not taking him
Your mindset in this class has to be different because of this professor in order to pass the class. To pass the class, do the homework ASAP, go to TA office hours, read the textbook, sit in the very front of lecture, laugh at all his jokes, and self-study the material. He's bound to make some mistakes in class and you have to accept that with him.
1st his thick accent and slow monotone voice puts you to sleep especially when the class is in the evening. 2nd he does in class quizzes so you have to come to lectures. 3rd his grading scale is 20% A , 10% B, 10% C and so on so you are competing with the rest of the class. 4th the midterms and final were a canvas quiz so it was hard to use graphs.
I do not understand why an introductory course can be so hard. Avoid his class of ecn001, his way of speaking is confusing and lecture needs attendance. A lot of materials and practice questions are confusing and contradictory. Tests are hard and homework are very difficult. It is not an easy class.
Pronunciation uncleared, Grading system is stupid. If you want to get A, sleeping might be a good choice.
The course material isn't too hard as long as you put some effort into it. The grading system is a bit harsh but it also works like a curve.
Bit of an accent and lecture can be boring, but introduced and taught the topics well. Exams all MCQ, HW once a week. Grade was 40% HW and 60% Exams. Your grade is based off your ranking among your peers, this could be good or bad it depends. Definitely go to lecture and take time to actually understand the HW and you'll do well.
Go to lectures (no recordings). Professor made the lecture very easy to understand and entertaining. Reading the textbook isn't required (I didn't), but if you want to get an A you should. Homework is 40% of the grade and could take a couple of hours depending on how hard it is. 60% is exams with 3 exams in total that are all multiple choice.
Professor Modjtahedi's lectures were difficult to understand and homework was quite difficult. I had to visit the AATC many times before I was able to understand the homework. Luckily, my TA was amazing and was able to explain things better. The good thing is that his midterm and final are quite similar to the homework.
Get ready for a challenge. Slides and tests don't always match, and the heavy accent can make lectures hard to follow. There are no clear examples for assignments, and homework grading based on corrections can be frustrating. Make friends in the class they'll be helpful. Also, grades are curved, so your final grade might end up lower than expected.
Professor Modjtahedi's class can be a challenge, but engaging with the material and using helpful study tools like unstuckstudy ai can pay off. Attend lectures, complete homework diligently, and you'll likely do well despite the tough grading curve.
do not take this class. he is difficult to understand at times, because he mumbles really bad. if you need help, you can't consult the textbook because he wrote it himself and it's more confusing than his lectures. the top 5% get an A+, the next 5% get an A, and so on. doesn't record lectures, which is fine, but his slides make no sense. seems nice
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Professor is hard to understand because of his raspy voice. He does not go over any of the practice problems in the slides; does not record lectures, so you have to attend. Because he doesn't explain problems, the HW is ridiculously difficult. Exams make up 60% of your grade HW 40%. Textbook is wordy and confusing.
Do not recommend.
Don't take this class. He has a heavy accent that is difficult to understand. His grading system makes you complete with the rest of the class. (top 5 % gets A) Homework are done through canvas quizzes and take hours to complete and lectures are boring.
Extremely hard to understand with his heavy accent. His slides include no meaningful information, so attendance is basically mandatory if you want to pass. The mic he has is too quiet to reach the back of the class, so you have to fight for front seats where you still will find yourself trying to decrypt his voice more than actually learning.
Run!!!!!!!!!!!!
TAKE ANY OTHER ECON CLASS FOR YOUR OWN SAKE This professor laughed in my face when I tried to talk about changing my midterm 2 grade He laughs in peoples faces a lot during lecture His grading system is so hard because it is based on a ranking. His voice is hard to understand because of his accent and is constantly mumbling. BEWARE. run awayy.
He ranked students and top 10% get an A, and so on. Lecture were okay, he mumbles and its sometimes are the hear him, even when I sat in the front. HW's are hard, so go to office hours or library free tutoring. Midterms and finals were multiple choice, yet its hard.
His personality is great. He was really funny 😂 and he grades very quickly. Now, the cons. His homework was NOT fair game. The homework was SO hard and if you don't find a group of other students to share answers with and figure out the assignment together, then it's going to be SO difficult trying to get 10/10 on each homework assignment of his.
He is a really good professor if you are ready to work really hard (top 10% get an A). He uses a textbook but it's honestly quite useless, the best strategy to do good in this class is understand the slides and really understand the practice problems and homework. 60% is tests (2MTs and 1 final) and 40% is homework (try to get 100% on every hw).
good professor
He definitely isn't the best teacher, however the class isn't hard so it makes up for it. His midterms and exams were very fair game if you understood the homework and did the practice questions. However, for the homework and practice questions go to AATC, OH, and find a study group if you can, that will help you a lot. TRUST.
The first thing you wanna do is SIT IN THE FRONT. His accent is kinda heavy but if you sit very close you can understand him pretty well. Once you understand him his lectures are actually pretty good. Curriculum wasn't too bad, and the grading wasn't as bad as I thought. Do the practice problems and make study buddies!
I liked the prof. My advice would be to attend lectures even if they don't make sense, it will make sense eventually. He had one hw every week, two midterms, and final. I definitely struggled in his class, it'd take me 5 hrs to do hw, going to tutoring helped. Accent was hard to understand at first but got used to it.
His lectures make no sense, has an extremely thick accent and refuses to turn up his mic volume, constantly messes up questions on his assignments, and words questions so strangely that it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to know what he is asking. Be prepared to use YouTube professors to teach yourself. I honestly wish I could rate him 0/5 stars.
Actually EASY eco class! Except the professor's accent
There is a weekly homework (10 attempts) that you can get 100% on if you form a study group. Read the textbook, and use the practice problems that he provides to study for the midterms/final. This helped me go from a 23/30 on midterm 1 to a 37/40 on the final.
thick accent, unclear lecture slides, consistent mistakes on homework and exam questions. he'll give you a concept that you may be able to use for one or two cases, but not the general idea of the thing. i went to AATC tutors and they were confused by his slides and teaching methods. I took this as a GE, maybe if you're an econ person you'll be ok.
Be prepared for a whole hour and a half of him teaching an entire chapter. Weekly hws were pretty difficult because he would throw in a few trick questions. GOOO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!! I can't stress that enough. He would explain the concepts slower, and I was able to finish the hws there. The tests had many similar problems to the practice exams: do!
Nice professor but lectures were boring and unengaging :( The homework was confusing sometimes IMO. The in-class quizzes serve as attendance but only the 10 highest scored count for ur grade. Midterms were kinda hard but the final was easier + u get a cheat sheet. Discussion is optional but pretty helpful. He did slightly curve grades thankfully.
Nice professor, and explained concepts slowly to ensure understanding, but weekly homework was extremely confusing with odd wording, mistakes, and occasionally concepts that we hadn't learned.
Personally horrible prof. The homework is hard and the lectures don't help at all. Anything that goes on in the lectures isn't on the homework or tests. The prof yaps a lot and strays away from the point. My TA was somewhat helpful but it also seemed like she didn't understand what she was talking about.
Thick accent and microphone is so low he refuses to turn it up. I actually did not learn ONE single thing from this professor... Shout out Youtube lectures and study groups.
his accent along with his mumbling make it really hard to understand at times, even when sitting in the front. He teaches things not super well and doesnt provide a lot of context. the homeworks are very grueling if you dont have a friend since theyre worth so much, it gets very hard to understand. plus tests are super hard, most ppl failing them.
Lectures were fairly clear and followable, but the homework assignments are worded in very strange and convoluted ways making them quite difficult. Definitely helps to go to TA office hours (you can even just do the hw in office hours) or to make a study group to try and work through them. Also, try to sit near the front of class.
Don't listen to any negative reviews! Only complaint is that he was a little hard to understand, but you can hear him perfectly if you sit near the front. Tests were super fair and easy because you get to make a cheat sheet; I didn't go to OH or study and got an A on both midterms. Super nice/funny guy and makes the class interesting. PLEASE TAKE!
He is too old to teach, he is forgetting how it is to be a student. He speaks like a turtle, and it is impossible to understand him. Whoever is giving him a 5 rating is a liar. You have to expect no curve when the class average is a 50%. He gives homework that is too hard.
man just don't.
Abandon all hope ye who enter here. It is not worth it; he talks like a turtle, refuses to turn up his mic, and his lessons are incoherent. He wrote the textbook and repeated it word for word during the lecture, and his textbook was written horribly. He doesn't even really help in office hours. For your own sake, please don't take it.
Professor Modjtahedi is very hard to understand at lectures, often randomly skips around slides and doesn't always give time to write down notes. Homework is very hard, often taking a couple hours just to do 5-10 problems. The midterm averages are around 60 percent. There is a generous curve, just makes the class harder than it needs to be.
Worst professor I've ever had. Mumbled and spoke quietly in lecture, never wrote the material on the slides. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Lectures were cool but half of the class couldn't hear because he wont speak up. First 3 rows are able to hear and hes pretty funny. Lectures don't really correlate to midterm/final. He does drop one midterm but overall I would not recommend
The complaints about lecture are overblown. Sit in the front of class and you'll hear and understand him well. Lecture explains everything you need to know and 30+ practice problems for every chapter ensure you won't be surprised on the test. Homework is challenging but understanding it will truly help you. 40/60 homework/test. Tests were fair
He really isn't that bad!! He can be hard to hear but like ppl are saying, sitting near the front helps. You get like 10 attempts on each HW, an 8x11in cheat sheet for literally every exam, and 40-60 practice ?s for each chapter. Attend lecture, make sure you understand HW & practice ?s, read the textbook if you need it, and you'll be fine
First of all, can't understand what he is saying during the lecture. He literally whispers for whole 1hr 20min so it is literally just a lullaby. Grading is 40% hw (so hard that can't get perfect score without group study), 60% exam. Average exams score were 57% for midterm 1, 62% for midterm 2, 60% for final but 2.5% grade curve for final grade
I lost my sanity in this class. No further comment.
Professor Modjtahedi is an excellent instructor. His lectures are clear and easy to follow, and he brings a great sense of humor to class. While the material can feel a bit dry at times he explains it well. He has an accent, but he's easy to understand. Exams are straightforward, and if you do the practice problems, it's easy to score well.
Homework 40% and exams 60%, I didn't have a lot of trouble but his mic is always super quiet and you can barely hear. Lectures aren't recorded and the textbook sucks, use the homework and practice questions to study! You definitely need to put in the work, but he has a good curve and isn't unreasonable. Funny guy, too.
macroeconomics good professor class of 2017 Phil, Ecn.
Pretty easy to get a B. The homework can be annoying. Exams are like the practice exams and homework. Sometimes it can be hard to hear him. Not bad.
You won't be able to make out a single word of ehat hesays
good professor macroeconomics uc davis Phil eco 2017.
good professor Philosophy economics uc davis 2017 great books in macroeconomics
took him for 1a and 1b, he is not good. he posts the lecture slides on canvas but they are so outdated and are missing a ton of information on them. even his lectures, they are extremely boring and hard to follow because of how he speaks, even when you're sitting at the front. even the textbook is not helpful bc he wrote it too
He seems like a nice person, but he was not an effective teacher for me at all. The only economics I learned in this class was what I taught myself. I would walk out of lectures feeling even more confused than I was before. The concepts aren't even that hard, he just makes them 10x harder to understand because of the way he explains them.
Legit STAY AWAY! This guy is genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. He talks like a turtle and is so muffled I get stressed listening. Class materials have a ton of mistakes and exams are difficult. If I could go back in time I wouldn't even major in economics if I knew this. Not professional at all.
he sounds like a mouth full joey chestnut chewing on 50 hot dogs. harder to understand than hieroglyphics. he tickles my ears i cant hear him. someone tell him to get a la dodgers sized speaker. if you have him on your schedule builder d r o p i t n o w
The way his class is made me hate Econ so much. The exams were trickier than his homework and practice questions. His lectures and textbook were very confusing He ahd lost of typos and errors.
idk maybe im just bad at econ but the discord server saved me in terms of hw bc i often did not know what was going on or how to find the answer from the lecture or even the textbook (which is written by him). and when it comes to the exams, no he does not curve them even tho the avg is often a D or F
good professor economics. hard class but great books and notes.
I did my masters in finance after graduating from uc davis in economics. and philosophy great for my finance career.
good professor of macroeconomics great class.
If I were taking this class again, I would not go to lecture and just study the textbook really well. This is the only thing that really helped with homework. The exam questions are really similar to the review problems he posts in the files on canvas. His lectures are funny though, I would just go for the laughs.
