Sherkat knows a lot about math, but he does not explain exactly what he wants from his students.
If you want to pass, understand, and enjoy a math class *do not* take a class with him at the helm.
Made the class interesting even though the subject is tough. Had blind student in our class so probably had to lecture slower and in more clarity than usual. Was fair to students' concerns but still had to keep to honor and integrity of teaching.
He does "try" but does not in any way, shape or form KNOW how to interact with students. Lectures are VERY, VERY confusing!!!!! I ended up with a W
Funny Guy, very intelligent but just cant seem to pass it on very well. Had to drop his class. Would suggest any other instructor besides him.
This was a challenging class, but he tries his hardest to help. Most people take him the wrong way. He was always there when I needed help and was a very dedicated teacher. Really in it for the students.
Horrible teacher had him for Precalc and dropped the class a month before it was over due to the simple fact that I would have had no clue what to do in Calc. If you want to learn anything in his class you have to teach yourself. His class was a waste of time.
HORRIBLE! Doesn't explain material very well. He "beats around the bush" alot, doesn't just get straight to the point. I was better off teaching myself at home. Waste of time. Never got his "jokes." Actually made me hate math so much that I considered changing my major (math). I usually LOVE math.
I was very nervous about taking a statistics class but this class was very clear and interesting. He made sure that we understood the material and presented it in a very clear fashion. He also made it fun, he is very comical.
I loved this statistics class with Mr. Sherkat, I was so afraid to take this class but he was very clear and he made the material so easy to understand and learn. He really wanted to help any students with questions. The most important thing about taking any statistics class is to be familiar with your calculator!
biggest **** teacher ever!!! he can't teach to save his life!! i would take any teacher over him for sure!!! if you registered for any of his classes - DROP IT NOW!
i love math, and i could not stand this professor. i dropped after 2 week, and am very glad i did so.
This teacher is a horrible teacher. I love math and am majoring in it. I would read the book and understand the homework, then become REALLY confused after he reviewed the next day in class. Had to drop after trigs or would have failed. Re-took with Beckham in summer and got an A.
This teacher is the hardest teacher i have every had. I failed the first test, and struggled the whole time. No calculators and timed test. It's an impossible class, BUT he is a really good teacher. If you get through that class you'll know your stuff, and math from that point on will be very easy.

He was extremely rude. I would not recommend him to anyone. Very cocky. Unhelpful. Lazy. Unclear. He criticizes the class and their intelligence. Just stay away.
Well I have to agree he is not an easy teacher, however I feel he does recognize hard work and apprectiates people who try. He was not always clear but I found cds to go along with the text. do the home work ask questions and tell him you want to succeed.

Do not take a Shirkat math class. Perhaps the most difficult class you will ever take. You've been warned.
I adore math and I am good at it. You can't take a Calculus class if your bad at math. However, he was the worst professor I have ever had! He makes students feel bad for asking questions. He rambles about things that do nothing to help us learn. I ended up having to drop with a W and I tried to tough it out like you wouldn't believe! Drop him now!
Sherkat was an awesome teacher and brought math to a place where we can relate it to our students by using every day life. Thanks!
He's very smart but it seems like he isn't very passionate about teaching 110. Comes off as an ass in the beginning of the semester to make people drop the course. But lightens up as the class size gets smaller. Probably a very good teacher for 211/212.
Dropped his class. I hated it, extremely disliked him. Don't think I am a student looking for an easy A. I am now in calculus and have taken other difficult classes (chem 102, anat, bio 150...) and received an A in all. Please take Razavi or Fadi Nasr. You will be so happy if you take one of these great teachers. Just stay away from Sherkat!!!
His class is hard. Be warned!!The class is lecture driven and not from the book. I had tutors in the math lab telling me they weren't sure what he was asking for. On the tests he doesn't give credit for your work only the correct answer.Take someone else if you can.
I took him for math 96, and he made it a very difficult class. You can tell he's smart and really interested in math, and maybe he'd teach better for higher math classes, but don't take him for anything lower than 105. Most of the time, he doesn't make sense, and most of the people in my class were confused. His tests are lectured based, which
DO NOT TAKE HIM!He's funny and smart but not a good teacher at all. He confused about 97% of the people in my class everyday! His tests are lectured based which is dumb because he gives so much homework and it turns out to be useless and worth 10 points. Goes off topic a lot (talks about his friends and other crap). I wish I took someone else!!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. THE COMPLEXITY OF THE QUESTIONS ON THE TEST ARE NOTHING LIKE WHAT WE GO OVER IN CLASS OR IN THE HOMEWORK. HOMEWORK PACKETS ARE ONLY WORTH 10 POINTS TOTAL, WHILE THE TEST IS 100. DONT TAKE HIM!!
Nice guy
I think Professor Sherkat is being unfairly portrayed here. I barely passed his class with a C, but I passed. He was fair, but he expected you to be in class, and ask questions if you didn't understand him. You must know math before you try to take him for algebra...he doesn't want to go backwards and reteach you what you should already know!
horrible teacher.. half of the class dropped...
godawful
Alright, people are really dragging this guy in the gutter. I had him for 096, and although it was difficult, he took all two and a half hours to make sure everything was understood. you have to care about math to take this class...if you care about learning, take him. if you care about BSing your way through this to get you AA and move on, don't.
This class is so hard. The tests are so difficult and the homework is only worth 10 points (even though there is so much). Your never sure what he wants on the tests. The only good thing about him is that he does answer questions. He doesn't use formulas and the bulk of your overall grade is based on 4 tests and a final.
People give him a lot of flak, but I thought his class was pretty fair. I don't know how he does with higher level math, but for Math 90, I recommend him.
Use another teacher if 1) you're only taking classes to stay on your parents' insurance, 2) haven't taken math in years, or 3) have no interest in math & desire only to fulfill a requirement. Use this teacher if 1) you want to learn, 2) your future requires math skills, or 3) you appreciate a teacher that actually requires you to use your brain.
People who hate the subject sometimes say its the teacher that is bad. I thought he was fair and patient, but he does cover the material pretty fast. Do ALL the homework, ask questions and get extra help at the math center and don't fall behind. I hate math but I'll do ok because he covers the material from more than one method.
How can I take previous ratings seriously when they can't even spell his name right? People, his name is Bahram! Now to the point: I think he is a great professor. His class is not for those looking for an easy A, though. If you want an A, in his class, you have to work for it. That's what I love best... I earned my freakin' A. EARNED IT!
completely incomprehensible. When he realized nobody understood him, he threw temper tantrums. 3/4 of the class dropped before i finally did
Although unclear at times, he expects the best out of the student. Very nice and will go out of his way to help you. If you are looking to skip class and goof off, your end grade will surely reflect, as it should.
Rude and unhelpful. He put the classes intelligence down and told us that teaching math 096 was like baby-sitting and for us all to hold hands. He came into the class acting as if we as students owed him something.
honestly the worst teacher that this world has. in the 4 years of my college education i have never came across a person like him. he is extremely rude, has a bad temper, and doesnt care for the students education. he doesnt like it if the student has a question, because he says, you should know. not just that he says that he doesnt care
I barely passed his class with a C, and recieved an A in the next class up,(?) different professor.Go figure.. Professor Sherkat is not bad, but expects alot from his students. He does expect you to know the basics, so brush up before you take his class.
Sherkat is the most useless math teacher I have ever had. He is very unclear in his lectures. He drew a picture on the board to explain integrals, and expected us to do a problem in class. 40 minutes later, he finally did it on the board. USELESS
Very diffucult class. You will be on chapter 5 notes while still going to take a test on chapter 3. He never goes through the packet with the anwsers you are unable to figure out since its just blanks he has filled in. Then you must know the text book, and the half finished packets for the tests. I know college is hard but this was ridiculous. Rang
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't answer students' questions, he just gets angry and impatient with them for even asking. He overcomplicates EVERYTHING, so even the small easy things he makes incredibly difficult and confusing. He constantly rants about how his way of teaching is better than everyone elses. Avoid him if you can.
He is a great teacher. He always came to class happy and made a lot of jokes. His class was definitely hard but I came away feeling like I really learned the material.
I took the class online and hated the entire thing. The professor didn't answer emails pertaining to my questions with enough information and the learning material sucked. He had videos provided and didn't seem like he put any effort into putting the course together.
Seems like a nice guy but I agree with most everyone else on here. Not helpful at all & very confusing. Allows use of calculator(TI83+,84+), but doesn't show you how to use it. I gave Math140 a fair shot but ended up dropping after 2 weeks because this instructor was not going to help me understand the material. Take this class with someone else!!!
I really enjoyed Sherkat as a teacher and walked away with a higher understanding of the material. In the beginning of the class I thought he was going to be too difficult for me, but after the first month - and everyone dropped who didn't want to deal with a challenging teacher - that's when he softened. All of his classes were dedicated to figuri
Why did my comment get Erased? It was not overly offensive... If you want to know what I think, a Physics major hopeful who grasps math very well usually, I HAD an Extremely hard time Understanding the Guy! Sherkat is Rude, Arrogant, Makes fun of students, and hates questions being asked. He also gets mad if you correct his mistakes. Some1 Fire HIM
I highly suggest reading the section before arriving in class, otherwise his lecture is very confusing. Sometimes, he does not teach in the order of the book though. He always explains how to do problems, and after we have done them, then he gives us the formula. If you like formulas and structure, definitely read before attending class.
Extremely hard teacher, if you like statistics do not enter this class. If you trust RateMyProfessor.com, trust it and never attend this class. Must have major foundation of stats to understand him. Not lenient what so ever! Has some sense of humor. But he is in his own little world.
this teacher is very strict. He does not help you with calculator questions. If you ask him a question in class he embarasses you. His way of teaching is very confusing, he's not clear at all. If you take statistics 140 take another teacker.
quite possibly the worst teacher to walk this earth. gets crazy mad when you ask a question and makes you feel stupid. constantly talking about how all teachers are wrong and he is right. passed the class with a c.
I knew this teacher would be hard going in, but you just have to grin & bear it. I suggest really reading the book and trying to understand the lesson on your own. He covers alot of info quickly so stay alert and take lots of notes. He seemed cool when you asked questions, sometimes he would allow other students to explain the answer. Attend class!
he is the worst professsor ever. if you are planning to pass the class then take a different instructor because he doesnt know how to teach. he thinks hes funny be he really is stupiddddd. man he is the worst. makes the classes harder. half of the students dropped half way of the class and maybe the rest will drop before the semester ends.
He is awesome i could not understand math before... he has changed the way teaching should be done.. awesome... he is really good
Last semester I ended up taking two classes with him passing both with b's. He's not the best when it comes to explaining the material but his test reviews prepare you very well for the tests. To avoid being lost in the class read the sections prior to attending class. As a final note, keep all reviews and previous tests to do well on the final.
I took the hybrid/online class. Really need to study the book since class meets once every few weeks. Practice tests are extremely helpful in passing exams. When I was sick, he offered to extend the exam date for me. Seems tough but studying book and practice tests will get you through.
Very time consuming class. Your grade is 4 tests (100-125pts) and 4 10pt hw assignments. Practice tests are given and are literally the test! At first he was rude and i didn't like him, but he grew on me and at the end of the semester this class was my favorite. If you have a question,go to him during office hours, very helpful during office hours!
Hardest class I've ever taken. I always get an A or B in math and I ended up getting a D. It might have been because it was hybrid and we got review once every month but do not consider taking this if it is hybrid, or take him at all.
Online videos lessons. Really hard to understand. Teacher basically tells you on the first day that it is tough. He basically does not care about his students. You have 4 or 5 exams. Chapter quizzes. Homework do not count.
If you are thinking about taking his online stat class, the most important thing you must know is that you are allowed to bring a 3x5 card of notes to every test. The practice tests are almost the same as the real ones, with the numbers changed. I simply copied the practice test questions in tiny handwriting on my 3x5 card. Those cards saved me.
THIS CLASS IS VERY DIFFICULT!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS
Worst professor I have ever had. I have NEVER received below an A in a math class and ended up with a C. When you ask him for help he is rude and does not answer the question effectively. When I asked to meet him he didn't show up. Hated this class. Mostly because of the professor. Do not take him online or at all for that matter.
I took the online course and man was it tough! I seriously considered dropping the course before the first exam, because I was petrified of getting further along in the course and failing. I didn't drop it, and I received an A in the course, but I worked my butt off! Put in the time, get the grade, slack off and you'll fail. Simple.
Don't expect to get much help. The professor allows a cheat sheet to takes exams which makes the class an easy A. But be sure to learn how to use the calculator on your own! And write the calculator steps on your cheat sheet to make it easy on yourself.
His online class is very difficult. Attention, discipline, and dedication is essential to passing. the grading criteria in the syllabus is basically it. no extra credit, what you put in to it is what you get out of it. He can be rude at times, if he does not like you, he makes it apparent. good luck!
Prof Sherkat makes his online class pretty clear and understandable. He posts videos about every chapter so you understand it more if the book doesn't do the job. There is a test once a month. Tests are taken at the LRC on campus. Tests are tough, allows 1 index card of notes, Calculator, and printed tables from the chapters covered.
So much to learn but very little to no professor guidance or existence. You must each yourself to pass and stay on it. The professor will not reply or make himself available. I would not recommend him to anyone taking other classes because this will take all you your precious time.
Professor Sherkat is my favorite Professor I have taken at MSJC. I took his Linear Algebra and Differential Equations courses. He wants us to succeed and pushes us ahead to prepare for the 4-year universities. I worked very closely with Professor Sherkat on code for the math classes, and got extra credit for it. He is an amazing professor.
This class is pretty much self taught so be aware that if you're not studying and do the work, you will not pass! I never spoke to him, but he does offer chapter reviews when he's available. I suggest you go to reviews if you can. Tests questions can sometimes be tricky so make you read everything because you'll get a wrong answer on an easy questi
Took statistics with Professor Sherkat, ( hybrid ). He is a very clear and fair instructor, being that it was a hybrid course I knowingly knew I was going to have to put in more effort in reading the text book and actually practicing several of the homework problems. Do the homework, study , and you will have no trouble in this class.
I took this class online so I expected it to be self taught. The only thing I would suggest is to make sure you remember some for the basic stuff from previous chapters for the proctored exams. The final, he sends out an e-mail about CLO's so make sure you study those along with the final chapters.
Professor Sherkat is absolutely amazing. Extremely supportive and teaches in a "real world" theory of statistical language. Is honest about the difficulty level of this online course but also strongly supports those who are willing to put forth effort to learn. I highly recommend for students who want to put in the effort to truly learn.
I had the privilege to be in Professor Sherkat's hybrid class. He is an excellent teacher and very accessible if you need him. There is a lot of homework. You have to study and do the problems. Most of them are on the quizzes and tests. You cannot pass this class without a stats calculator. I encourage you to get the one he suggests.
Very helpful and really makes an effort to help you understand the concepts. Truly wants all serious students to succeed. Love this teacher. Goes out of his way and spends as much time as necessary to ensure his students are getting all out of this class they can for real life work problems.
I took Baldwin for Math 96 online and he seemed friendlier. I thought, "Well I had a great math online experience for Math 96, why not give it a try for Math 140!" Well my experience so far has been so so. Sherkat can be very sarcastic at times when you ask him a question so I rather not ask. Practice exams help a lot to learn material on tests.
This professor is absolutely amazing. I took math 140 and was struggling the whole semester (it was an online class) but towards the end he showed extreme compassion and understanding of my lack of ability to do math, and helped me more than any professor wouldve. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! HE'S the best!!
Great professor! Very passionate about his subject and really loves helping students. If you aren't laughing in this class, you aren't understanding his sense of humor (one of the most caring professors I've ever had). I took the online course and he invited us to the reviews for his hybrid class, which made it an easy A for me.
I took the hybrid format. He at least answers questions and guides you through to get the right answer. Not super lively, but an easy class overall.
I took his hybrid stats class. His method of teaching was confusing. He mostly focused on making sure we used a calculator and not making sure we actually understood the subject. This class really only taught me how to look up homework/quiz answers online and not very much stats. Dont bother buying the textbook and make sure to go to tutoring.
As most have mentioned, this course requires self-teaching. I never used the textbook because everything is in his PowerPoints. MUST study before exams if you aren't excelling overall. Understand the calculator. And be prepared for his sarcastic, snarky replies to questions. Although I'm reading tone via email, he isn't friendly at all. GOOD LUCK!
Took online and found it's a very time consuming class. If possible, take it on campus. Going to his tutor sessions is a must. Using the discussion board and email just doesn't happen. Tone on emails are blunt, rude, and doesn't answer the question. This subject is hard enough, but to me, it is even harder with this professor.
I believe statistics or word problems are difficult in general. I dont understand why they rate this professor so poorly. I took the class hybrid, met only when reviewing the tests. I believe this professor cut us some slack by allowing us to use a calculator. Which helped a lot. He also held a lot of office hours to help those who needed tutoring
Statistics is hard in general, but he definitely lifted some weight by letting us use a stats calculator (I recommend getting the one he suggests). I took his hybrid class which only met for test reviews, but he had office hours for tutoring. He doesn't just give you answers during review, he thoroughly explains it and applies it to the real world.
I took his online class. I feel like he does a good job providing his students with the tools necessary to pass this class. He has office hours and holds study sessions to review for exams. 4 exams total. Can bring notecard to tests with formulas and such as well as calculators. Weekly online quizzes prepare you for exams so take those seriously.
Sherkat is not a professional professor. When reaching out for help he responds in a rude, sarcastic way. You are on your own, if you have a question get help somewhere else. His style of teaching is all over the place and very confusing. Find a different math teacher if you might need assistance or have questions bc you wont get help from him.
Had him for online Math which made the class hard to begin with. I'm not going to rate him poorly since this is the first semester he did online. However, he didnt really teach. He just gave 100 homework problems per chapter and hoped that sufficed in teaching people.
Prof. Sherkat offers multitudes of learning tools within each lesson such as tutorial videos on how to operate the graphing calculator, videos from the author of the textbook, powerpoint slides, discussion boards, and zoom meetings. Sherkat also shows students more than one way to solve given problems and is extremely accessible seven days a week.
SPRING21. I didnt stay long enough in his class to be graded on anything and Im glad I didnt. Sherkat is very rude and unprofessional. He sent an email to the whole class ridiculing them and the last sentence was very off putting. He said I understand that you want to do well in this course, right? Who says that to their students so early on??
What an amazing professor his class is not easy but if you study you will be fine ! Cool professor !
Professor holds optional weekly zoom meetings for additional help. Preferred to meet in his office for more thorough explanation. Not test heavy. Easy to understand material. The book is somewhat hard to read but imperative. Additional videos helped a lot since this was an online class and meeting at the allotted times can be difficult.
I don't get all the bad reviews. Very straightforward timeline. No surprises. One chapter a week. One graded homework quiz worth about 10 points with 3 retakes. He's available for zoom meetings and posts zoom recordings of the lecture. The exams are on the previous 2-3 chapters that you've been working on. Take him! uses an affordable book and calc
Just took this professor and idk why he has a low rating, he's such a great professor! if you have any questions he will hop on zoom or help you during his schedule office hours. Zoom meetings weren't required and he went the extra mile to go on every week to help us. I would 100% take him again. make sure you buy the calculator
Prof. Sherkat hybrid class was an easy A grade, he used an online program called open math works to turn in our homework and quizzes and it gives you 99 tries to complete the assignments, which is how I got 100's on every assignment. Great professor, you should take his hybrid class.
I am not one to be very good at math but this professor explains the material in a way that I could easily understand, and felt comfortable asking questions during class and office hours. Homework had 99+ retries if needed so, anyone can get 100%. Criteria for the class is straightforward and simple, I strongly recommend this professor.
I took Linear Algebra in 2023 and professor Sherkat was VERY accommodating to students with grading homework assignments as far as pushing back due dates to allow them to catch up. Exams are based off the textbook questions. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR OWN LEARNING, no one is there to "teach" you anything, only to review what you studied at home.
Ignore the bad reviews. Professor Sherkat is absolutely an incredible professor who really knows his stuff and is passionate about it. I took his 140 Stats hybrid class in Fall of 2024. The most important thing that I can advise, and he will advise is to SHOW UP and ENGAGE. Ask questions and don't be afraid to be wrong, and you will excel here!
Professor Sherkat was an outstanding teacher. His lectures were informative and really helped me understand statistics. I advise to take the time to study and really listen to what he has to say and you are going to do amazing. He is an extremely good and helpful teacher overall and I would definitely take his class again.
Practice/Quiz assignments are easy to complete. You have access to written example problems on the homework, and could recycle problems until you're correct on both the practices and quizzes. Lectures could sometimes feel long, but the professor thoroughly explains the concepts and does his best to clarify and answer questions.
I had a great experience with Professor Sherkat taking Math 213 at the Temecula campus. He was always ready to help and was flexible with his office hours. His goal was to make sure we understood the material rather than just going through it by changing the pace of the class throughout the year based on our understanding of the various lessons.
I really liked his class, but ended up failing because I wasn't attending enough. Attendance really matters in his class! He tries everything to help you understand the material and loves being asked questions. He is super informative and nice. I would have done better if I had shown up more. I recommend him if you take all your classes seriously!
Very flexible on deadlines if you are falling behind. Good at making sure you are learning the material rather than just memorizing it. Final exam was easy, questions just like the ones on the homework.
Professor clearly cares about his students, he has well thought out lectures but will adjust according to struggling students and is super nice about feedback, hands-down, one of the most open minded Professors that has no ego, will likely take again for Calculus 3 in the future.
One of the best professors I had. He didn't put so much work, and there was only like 1 discussion for the whole semester lol. Of course, its online math so you basically learn on your own with YouTube videos, but I was able to really understand calculus without worrying about doing unnecessary work.
Very sweet man that knows what he's doing. All I can say is make sure you really take time outside of class to understand the material. Extremely easy online quizzes. Attendance is mandatory. Hilarious professor and incredibly easygoing.
Took him for Calc I, and after coming back for Calc III, I still like his teaching style! He genuinely wants his students to understand the concepts and how they can be applied, instead of immediately putting up the formulas needed. Attend class, complete the assigned homework questions/discussion boards, and you'll be prepared for the final!
