Great teacher. Somewhat organized but overall great. 2 speeches, 2 test, 2 critiques and just some activities to do in class. Very helpful with any assignment and very patient.
He teaches his classes reasonably clear. You will do good in the class if you come to class every day and participate, and of course, get on his good side. If you show that you spend time on speeches, you will get an A. Also, you will be absolutely clueless on his tests unless you look at the study guides. Then they are very easy.
I've always been afraid of public speaking and he really helped me overcome it. His class is pretty easy... just come to class everyday and participate and you'll do fine. He grades easy on the speeches and the tests arent bad either.
The class is simple but you must attend the class. Knowing your overall grade is almost impossible though he gives the grades of the midterm and 2 major speeches a few classes later.
professor akil is a really nice person but he is really disorganized and that can affect your grade. he knew what we were doing half the time and he would always confuse our class with another one. i would not recommend him at all. he sucks.
Dr. Akil is AWESOME! I LOVED his class and as long as you show up, do your class/group activities you will pass!! I would recommend him 100 times over with out giving it a second thought!
I was really scared to take this class because I hate public speaking but he helps you with this by making you participate in the class every time you are there. The class is easy and I would recommended any one to take him unless you are absent a lot. Attendance is a must in his class.
Dr. Akil is ok. His class is pretty easy and he's not too hard on his grading. You hardly ever use the textbook except for the midterm and the final. Attendance is mandatory with him, but classes are laid back and comfortable.
Dr. Akil helps you get over your fear of speaking in public. I found his a valuable asset in speech and communication.
i felt like i was taking a public outlining course instead of speaking.. His outlines make no sense.. You spend more time trying to figure out the outline than making the speech itself. and the outline is 70% of the grade..
He is awsome and super easy, vry helpful teacher, wish every teacher was like him!
I love this man. I wrote a speech about how to survive a zombie apocalypse and he allowed me to finish even though my time was up. He's also an accomplished martial artist and threw me into a choke hold as a demonstration of a talent for one of our assignments. All in all if you do your work timely, he's one of the coolest professors out there!
This class is fun and interactive. He helps relieve your speech stress by getting you up in front of the class in group and solo activities. The outlines are a bit confusing but I just copied his example from Blackboard and pasted my info into it. Got a 100. He's cool.
The outline is not that difficult at all pretty straight forward. Dr.Akils strategy is awesome he pretty much gradually helps a person overcome the fear of public speaking. He is very professional and grades fairly.
I heard a lot of good things about his class before I signed up. But, it was even more fun than I expected. I dreaded public speaking, but his method helped me to quickly reduce my fears. I have really enjoyed Dr. Akil's class.
Just come to class and do his speeches he gives you a A or B on your speeches thats it.
As long as you show up to class you will get a good grade. He's a very good professor
Mr. Akil is laid back. You have to speak infront of the class about yourself. Mr. Akil is very easy with a good sense of humor. Mr.Akil is quiet and sits in the back but is in control of the class. Stand up and be heard is my motto for his speach class. I loved the class
Prof Bakari is really nice, course is easy.
Dr. Akil is a good instructor, although he doesn't rely on the course book at all. All of the course information is through PowerPoint presentations and emails. Also, all turn in items must be typed. He should put out the material sooner to give more time the study it. Otherwise it is a great and fun class, it seems like the class is too short :-)
This class was SO MUCH FUN. He makes even the shyest people comfortable, but you get as much as you give. I learned so much about my classmates and had great time getting to know them. There are two 5 minute speeches you have to do, but that is a lot less time than you think. Definitely recommend and you don't need the text at all.
Dr. Akil is an awesome professor. He's laid back, gives extra credit, and fair. He doesn't really use the book, since he made the powerpoint presentation and much easier to understand. Take his class, its an easy A.
Dr. Akil was a great professor. I wasn't sure how I felt about public speaking but I like it a lot more after taking his class! There are 2 five minute speeches, and the rest of the classes consist of exercises which really allow you to become comfortable with your class. He grades fairly easily. Highly recommend!
Confusing class. Never knew exactly what he was asking for. Midterm was a 20 question joke that counted as much as your 2 graded speeches. Good public speaking outline provided but never was discussed for the format in which he wanted it. Got by by trial and error. Take someone else.
This is an easy class. You don't need to purchase the book, because he won't use it. All you have to do is attend class and follow his directions.
Awesome teacher! He is funny and super flexible. Just show up and do your (easy) assignments. You will be put on the spot in front of the class daily but if you can get over that you'll be golden.
He provided a syllabus but lacked telling you what he expected and didnt care to help the students bring up their grades. I dont recommend this teacher. showing up is mandatory unless you want your grade dropped and to miss his speeches before class.
To be fair, I think this professor got stuck teaching this class because I know he usually teaches speech, etc. and this was a digital analysis class. THE CLASS WAS EASY!! However, this professor is horrible about explaining things so it is always unclear about what he is looking for. Also, no grades posted until after the midterm.
one of the best teacher that i've taken over all. fairly understanding and will assist you with whatever you need help with so do not be afraid to ask for help when needed. do the work and and turn it in whenever it's due and you will do more then great in this class, enjoy! textbook is not recommended!
Awesome class, attendance may be "mandatory" but... you can skip some and still have an A. Don't abuse it, though...
This is a very useful class, and I enjoyed everything we did in this class. The exercises we did in this class were useful and fun to do. I would recommend taking this class with this professor.
He is very specific with what it is that he wants so there are no surprises. His dates are always specified in class so attendance is suggested. Easy class as long as it follows the guidelines.
You would think Public Speaking is a hard class, but if you take Dr. Akil, it will be the easiest class you have ever taken in your life. Only two 5 min. speeches to do all semester and you do small exercises everyday. The official end time for my class was 12:20pm. He has never let out later than 11:50. Show up, easy A.
Professor Akil is very calm and professional. He dresses up in his suits for every class. You don't need any textbook; you will be barely opening it. There is only 1 test which is the midterm and for the Final exam, you just have to write a reflection and come to class to give a quick speech about it. Easy A & he gives extra credits opportunity.
I was so not excited to take a public speaking class but professor Akil made it fun and easy. Does little exercises so the class will feel comfortable with each other. If you hate public speaking he is the prof for you
I would recommend if you are a student who doesn't like it present at all. Even though it is a speech class and its mandatory to talk, he has the class do in class practices with speech games that have you feel better about talking to your classmates when up in the front of the room! Also, I suggest doing your current events as soon as possible!
The course was excellent. I loved being able to work with other students, and be able to talk in front of a crowd. The Professor guided us on how to deliver speeches. I am actually looking forward to taking more classes where I have to be in front of people.
Group projects, interesting, fun and good ice breaker games! I would take him again for sure!
He is pretty ok. Nothing really too difficult. You dont use the textbook and there is a lot of group work.
I was a little nervous to take a speech class but Professor Akil was very laid back and made the class enjoyable. Would recommend to anyone.
Worst professor I have ever encountered. I recall on one assignment, I turned in on the due date I got a 1 out of 5 for "time managment." So because I did not turn it in BEFORE the due date I got points taken off. He also waited until the last day of the semester to grade all assignments, so when I came to him with an issue he argued with me.
Professor Akil really makes speech class tolerable. If you're scared of speaking in public, take him! He doesn't give you a lot of speeches to do, but when he does give you one, you really learn from it. He's very clear with what he wants and he's understanding. Plus, he's a very nice person. The class is an easy A if you do the speeches.
Easy class. Did it online and had no anxiety or stress. If you need the class credit but hate speech he is the professor to take. Lenient grader.
Dr. Akil's class was laid back and fun. We laughed everyday and still learned a lot. The work was not hard, but attendance is mandatory and you will have to speak in front of the class almost every time. I thought I would dread this class, but instead I looked forward to going. I would recommend it to anyone.
Great speech class. Super easy and definitely would recommend. Intro speech: 2 mins, posted on youtube. Two discussions. One quiz. Two speeches: 5 mins, in front of 5 people, posted on youtube. Two two-page critiques on your speech. Some online assignment where it was a game to learn speech words. (Takes an hour to do.) Super easy. No extra credit
This professor is really not all that good. Introduction video criticized the um's when it was clearly stated that this was my first speech class. writing two page papers on nothing. The only good thing was that we didn't have much work to do. Two speeches, two critiques, one intro video a memorize midterm, and like two discussions.
Omg, I took this class because not only do I love public speech and writing, but this class helped me to get out of my comfort zone and it was so much fun! he's a blast!
Do your reading and watch videos of proper public speeches. He is extremely fair and reasonable. Be honest with him and turn in your work on time. He is an easy A and a great professor. I highly recommend him!
This class was easy for a speech class. The professor is caring and gives random extra credit opportunities during class. Prepare for class and you'll pass with an A. I would definitely take this class again.
Dr. Akil is a great Professor for you if you do not enjoy doing speeches. He makes the class fun by doing exercises in the class to make you feel more comfortable. He is an easy grader and you are required to do 1 current event speech (2mins), 1 informative speech (5mins), and two self critiques.
I was afraid to take Public Speaking and put it off until my last semester. I don't why I was worried. Dr. Akil's class was so laid back and fun. I actually looked forward to going to class. He is real specific and makes sure you have everything you need to pass. If you are scared to take public speaking, take Dr. Akil.
I was nervous about taking this class, but it wasn't so bad. 1 intro speech and 2 big speeches 5-6 min. long, 5 audience members, uploaded to youtube. Other than that easy midterm consisting of an online vocal game, 1 discussion, and 2 -2 page self critiques. Prof. Akil made this class easy, but takes forever to grade everything!
Doctor Akil is a super easy teacher! I took the online course of SPC2608 and it was by far the easiest class I have ever taken. As long as you do the presentations youre going to pass no matter what. Hes very laid back about assignments also.
Dr. Akil is a really good professor and you can tell he's passionate about his job. Some of the class can be hard if you don't keep up with the work but if you do then you'll be fine. 3 big speeches, some practices, a group speech, and a current event article. I would take him again because he gives good feedback!
Professor Akil was great! 3 speeches, 1 midterm, 3 critiques. He started an online meet up with students so they could pool together an audience to meet the requirements. Follow the requirements and you'll get an A. He gives extra points for outstanding work.
No issues with the professor but if you plan to improve your public speaking dont take this in 7 weeks. We did a joke, a group speech, and a group powerpoint presentation. Also 2 short reflections on our presentations. He has a sense of humor and would recommend, just not in a 7 week session.
Compared to the other speech classes, this is one of the easiest. Dr. Akil only makes you do a joke, a poem, a current event, an informative speech, and a group project at the end. He also has you do 2 critiques and a reflection essay, but those were easy as well. I would definitely recommend.
I took his online class and we had 2 speeches, 2 critiques, and a few quizzes. For someone who struggles with public speaking, I found that following the rubrics got me great feedback and a great grade. The quizzes have only a few questions so make sure you read the assigned readings! Overall, easy A as long as you plan ahead and follow his guides.
Prof. Akil does a great job at getting students to understand what to do and what not to do during a speech. On the first day of class, he lists every assignment and when they are due. That gives everyone plenty of time to prepare for their speeches and assignments. He also has a GREAT sense of humor, which made the semester go by much quicker.
Dr. Akil is the easiest professor to take online. The work is really easy, in other classes you would have to read a book and do a speech about it. However, in this class, there are only 3 speeches and 3 quizzes. It fairly is real easy. I recommend!
Easy A! I took the seven week course and it consisted of one introduction speech and two 5-6 minute speeches and two critiques and a easy midterm game. I bought the textbook and didn't use it. As long as you put in effort and submit all the assignment's its an easy A. Only thing is grades take for ever to be posted.
The class was very easy but if you are really particular about your grades do not take him. He took points off for reasons that he did not state BEFORE the assignment and he did not even finish grading all of my assignments before the semester ended. When emailing him about my concerns he was very rude! I would not take his class again.
Honestly it was too easy, there was no actual class. It was confusing though I never knew what was going on, there was no final and our midterm was an online game? lol Definitely recommend if you need to take a public speaking course. I think we did two speeches, two reviews, and our "midterm" and that was it.
Easiest speech class ever! There were only 3 speeches the whole semester and he grades really fairly. The mandatory textbook is used sometimes and I found a free PDF online. Due to COVID the speeches only require and audience of 2 people, very easy speeches and easy A.
Not a bad experienced with this professor. Overall the professor is lack of care with student, took forever to replied to email.
Three speeches, one is solo and the rest are in groups of three or four (they serve as your audience), two critiques on your own performance, three quizzes (mostly on textbook stuff), and a midterm. Wasn't super difficult, but he had a lot of unnecessary guidelines, everything has to be exact (exactly 10 minutes or exactly two pages).
instead of having to do speeches in front of 4 people, we did an intro speech alone and two speeches in groups. made having to do a 10 min speech so much easier. midterm is literally playing a game and there's a couple quizzes that are super easy. no final.
Class is super easy. However, the Professor is rude and condescending shall you have any questions about the vague expectations or where to find certain information. Easy A. He gets an F.
This class was quite easy. A few quizzes, 2 group speeches, and critiquing your performance. However, expectation and rubrics for the course were sometimes vague and made him seem stricter than he actually was. Overall, easy speech class with very little assignments.
I learned a lot in the class but his grading criteria was not very clear. You get points off for things he didn't ask for. Some of the quiz questions seemed as if they were from a different version of the speech book. One quiz had only 4 questions. So if you got one wrong based on wording from a different book, it really affected your grade.
He took a little long to grade things but it was a good class. I learned a lot.
Overall would recommend this professor and would take his class again. Midterm was very easy - took me about 20 minutes. Only 3 quizzes for the entire course. However, the biggest grades(2) of the course were group projects so beware of slacking group members!! Pretty easy class and professor.
Super easy class but you have to show your face for credit.
Very nice professor. Really cares about public speaking. I am terrified of it still, so class didn't help in that aspect- but one class isn't going to take away a lifetime of anxiety! Would definitely suggest him if you have to take a speech class, because he works with you!
The class was super easy & we only had 10 assignments, if that. However, this professor could be condescending at times and has poor communication with emails. My entire group had issues with him and the way he communicates. I would take his class again but not for him, for the ease of his assignments. Attendance is a huge grade for him!!
I took his class online, although he was hard to reach on canvas, he was a good professor. There are very few assignments and it isnt very difficult to pass. Would take again
Professor Akil clearly did not care about our class throughout the entire semester. He responds to emails very slowly, if at all. When he does have correspondence with the class, he seems annoyed that he even has to email us. The rubrics are unclear and the grading criteria solely depends on how he's feeling. Also takes weeks to grade assignments.
I really enjoyed this class and Dr. Akil is great. The class is very easy and only a few assignments. If you dread public speaking definitely do this class online. You only have to have 5 participants and they can join in via a webcam so it'll cut down on stage fright. I highly recommend anyone take his class.
Although his class is fairly easy, I will say that he is very disorganized. He will grade you for something that was not in the instructions, and doesn't respond when he is needed or called out for his mistakes. Makes you work in groups even with online class. I would not suggest taking his class, if you do, just play close attention
I encourage you to take this professor. Only 6 assignments/2 speeches are of those 6. Do the work and you will pass. Fast grader/gives extra credit. This was a hybrid class so we met every other week. I wouldn't recommend missing any due to the little time you are actually in class. If you are dreading taking a speech class, this one is for you!
This professor was personable and demonstrated clear expectations. For it being an online class, he finds ways to make it immersive and challenging (in a good way) he pushes you to think outside of the box to attain good results. You can tell he cares about what he does and it shows in his assignments and feedback. Very professional.
All of your speeches are group projects and you are stuck with the same group he puts you in all semester. He was good at instructions, but he kept everything in random places on canvas, so it's a little confusing. He is also very particular when it comes to grading, so make sure you read the rubric. Overall, the class was easy.
Easy class, but professor has clearly never done anything outside of academia. Source material pushes an agenda. Online class & 2/3 speeches are group projects that require you to bring audience members. Instruction was lack luster at best and didn't reflected real world expectations of speech presentation. Do the bare minimum, get your A, move on.
Class was clearly copied from online class with no meetings, very confusing in canvas. Rubrics did not match what he said in class. You have to clarify requirements many times. He is nice and doesn't grade hard. 2/3 speeches where with group. Midterm was easy. You are requires to dress nice and stand for speeches.
I enjoyed the class, and Dr. Akil was not a hard grader. There were only 9 assignments with three of them being speeches. Two of the speeches were in groups that you were placed in at the beginning of the semester. Overall, the class was not too difficult.
Let me start by saying this class was a nightmare. Complete lack of care, professionalism, and clear instructions from Dr. Akil. I do NOT recommend taking this class to anyone based on what I and other students experienced. Doesn't answer emails, doesn't care for students, and doesn't grade fairly or in a timely manner.
Professor Akil was laid back and kind of funny. The assignments were not that difficult, but you have to participate in class exercises. Attendance was mandatory. There were three speeches, three quizzes, a midterm and two critiques that we had to do. He always made sure we knew what was going on in class and kept things interesting.
If you need a speech class specifically to fill credit hours, this is your professor. If you are taking speech to actually LEARN to public speak, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Instructions are lack luster and unclear. Never responds to emails and takes an entire semester to grade any of your work. I learned nothing in this class. Would not recommend.
Took class hoping to learn about public speaking. I learned what kind of teacher I don't want. Unclear in requirements, canvas not up to date, emailed for clarity and he replied in a condescending way. Its good to know about the teacher, but he spoke of himself too often and made us read some of his own articles, had nothing to do with our work.
I was skeptical about taking a speech course, but had to in order to graduate. I knew a few people who took Professor Akil's course and said they had fun, so I signed up. I am glad I did! Although attendance is mandatory the work was not hard and grading was fair. He also was understanding when I had a life issue mid-semester and worked with me.
Great professor, his class was mostly group presentations but they went really well. The text book teaches well about public speaking and his method of creating outlines for your presentations really seem useful. His tips, tricks, and critiques have helped me improve and feel much more comfortable when public speaking. Solid Professor.
Class was great and you learn a lot about how to properly speak in group settings. Don't take this if you aren't prepared to work in groups outside of class. My only cons are he came in late almost everyday and seemed very unprepared for the class. We went over the scheduled time every single class and had to stay up to 30 mins late to present.
I emailed this professor that I was sick the whole week, even sent him a doctors note, and he never replied. I tried to call him and he did not answer, nor did he return my calls.
I was very grateful for his constant accomodations , group projects were necessary so hopefully you get a good partner(s). You will have to present in front of people so my best advice is to plan in advance for the presentations make sure you have 5 people to present infant of and set it up ahead of time. Overall he's a decent teacher I recommend!
The assignments given to take are easy and don't require much. However, if you are taking this online, please make sure that you know five people you can read to at the same time. or that you have transportation to meet with your group. If you don't then you'll fail, his class.
Professor Akil demands 2-3 speeches and group collaboration, requiring preparedness for outside presentations. Live meetings with exercises are mandatory, and absences are reported. Grades are based on attire and movement. Assignments are submitted on time, and quizzes are easy.
If you take this course online, you will have to present your speeches in front of five adults. There is no compromise on this, he will not accommodate you if you have a situation that makes this impossible. He will fail you if you are not fortunate enough to have this luxury.
He talks a lot about himself and when I had a family emergency and an issue with my health, even with doctors notes he does not respond. He tells students to reach out with any questions but all you will hear is crickets. Easy class overall, but do not expect grace when life gets in the way.
Dr. Akil is laid back, funny and very helpful. His style of teaching allowed us to improve without realizing it. His class was fun. Be ready to speak in every class though. He gives out a lot of extra credit and he even allowed me time to complete an assignment during a rough spot I was going through. I would take his class again in an instant.
We met once every other week. There was only 9 assignments, 2 speech's, 2 critiques, a couple quizzes, and 1 midterm. The midterm was super easy, the only thing I didn't like was that the speeches were a group project, even though it was graded separately your grade did lie in the hands of your partners.
The class was not overwhelming and the assignments were easy to complete.
Dr. Akil was a great professor, group projects, you will have to stand up and speak every class as well. The class was hilarious and it's definitely a class that will get you out of your shell and improve your confidence. Amazing professor overall and the assignments were cake.
Easy assignments, good engagements, you could notice classmates be more confident in their speaking throughout the course. Just send things on time and dress properly and it should go well for you
Dr. Akil is a great professor, he gives plenty of chances to pass his class and many chances for extra credit. The course itself is also not difficult and not heavy at all, there is plenty of time to complete assignments and the assignments are pretty easy.
I would recommend this class. It's not a difficult class to pass just try to turn in everything in time. This class has helped me to be more confident with myself .Everyone feels nervous to speak in front of the class.
Professor Bakari Akil is an excellent instructor. His course was clear and manageable, and he was always patient and understanding. He created a comfortable environment that helped me gain confidence in my communication skills. The workload was reasonable, and expectations were easy to follow.
Professor Akil gave me the tools in order to feel confident in giving speeches. Do the work on time. And if you have any questions he answers fast. he wants his students to succeed and literally tells you everything you need to do in order to get an A. The work load was extremely manageable.
Dr. Akil was a great professor! I always dreaded taking a public speaking class but he made it so easy. Only have 2 speeches with 2 critiques, as well as 4 quizzes & a midterm. Quizzes are based on material in the textbook but are super easy. He provides a few opportunities to gain extra credit & is very understanding. Just show up and participate!
I very much enjoyed this class, was a breath of fresh air compared to the other more difficult classes I took this semester and I appreciate that.
Very easy class, upfront with his expectations and guidelines. He is semi-strict with speeches make sure you are well prepared. 2 writing assignments about your 2 speeches.
Dr. Akil's class was lots of fun. I went into public speaking very nervous but his class made it easy to learn and improve while not feeling judged or put down. Would for sure take again
He is a great teacher and he is really good at explaining the assignments. Taking his class was fun and it was very interesting to take his class. Definitively my favorite class from this semester.
He's an amazing professor and very much sets you up for success
be prepared to present dont just go with the flow, and be able to work collaboratively with your group
If you are going to take this class do it in person and not online, if you take him online.. good luck trying to get ahold of him and get a proper grade system. I'm pretty sure he confused his in person grading with his online and my groups project suffered bc of it.
We had three speeches, three quizzes, a midterm and two critiques. The assignments were pretty easy. When I found out we had to work in groups, I wasn't excited, but I ended up with a great group. Even though this class was online, I still felt a connection to class due to my group. Overall, it was a good experience...
I enjoyed this course. The teacher provides clear guidelines, we had maybe 3-4 quizzes. You will have two group projects & two speeches that require you to recite in front of 5 adults for credit. The teacher does take several weeks to provide grades for speeches/critiques which can be stressful however, he does respond to emails promptly.
We had 3 total speeches (Introduction, informational, and persuasive) We had approximately 4 quizzes I did have issues with the quizzes not matching what the book said word for word with true false questions. That is the only reason I did not get an A I tried to email multiple times, but communication was not the best about that situation.
