Does not know what he is talking about, lots of irrelevant reading, but the papers are easy.
the only bad thing i gotta say about the prof is that his accent isn't really clear.... otherwise class is easy, and he does a tremendous job helping students out. no tests, only essays which are fairly easy
THIS guy, kinda easy. not that much work to do. but the class is borin most of the time. u can understand everything he says. dont know anythin about Islam, still pulled an A-
Class is not that fun, you'll find ur self staring at ur watch... his reading in HST 60 is often POINTLESS... so u arnt motivated to keep up... he often does mulitple choice one word pop quizes... In RST 60 he gives u the pool of questions for the Midterm and Final... cant beat that..and no essays!
He definately had a funny accent. He wasnt very clear on his essays-the prompts were very broad and not clear. He often gives the prompt only 1 week ahead, i find that not enough time. Too much reading for everyday. The class could have been more interesting; not all that i hoped it would be.
Seriously easy, didn't need to do the readings. We had groups that we were to talk together which was fun and boring. He does give you all the possible questions for the test so if you can memorize you will do fine. It was just a tad boring. I was watching my watch a lot. You need to go to class!
one of my favorite teachers...he really tried hard to present an accurate history of the middle east, which is challenging these days. assigned a lot of reading, but essays weren't that bad if you read and asked for help. weekly quizzes are a good grade booster...you just have to go to lectures.
Dr. Tezcan is really nice, but your TA matters more since s/he will grade 90% of your work. No tests, 4 papers (15-17 pgs total), two easy texts and a not so easy reader. Section groups consist solely of individual presentations followed by group discussion, based on assigned readings. XC quizzes.
Very interesting teacher. Only reading for homework, readings are insane 500+ pages on course reader and a book. Questions are pulled verbatum from practice midterm n practice finals. Easy class overall. Class participation points is 40 percent!! Be prepared to discuss on readings!
fun professor! despite this class being at 9 am i really enjoy prof. tezcan, not all the material was interesting but you can tell that he is very passionate about his subject and he really cares about his students. great prof.!
one of my favorite professors! dr. tezcan is really fun and passionate about what he teaches. assigns interesting material. paper topics were clear and he didn't expect more than we could handle. assigns a little more reading than i would have liked, but that's history for ya. awesome prof.
This guy really knows his stuff. The class was really interesting and pretty easy, although my TA was kind of harsh. I was surprised at how objective he was when talking about the Middle East, him being Muslim himself. Really good professor, definitely take his class.
Baki is the coolest teacher ever. He makes me laugh.

Baki has a sense of humo rand empathizes with you if you apply yourself. However, he tends to ramble in lectures when the material is already kinda boring. He also assigns a LOT of reading. On papers, his prompts are confusing and he has somehwat high standards. He's knowledgeable, but work hard.
Good lectures, slides kinda useless so get ready to listen and write. Quizes buffer grade so nice. Readings are INSANE 600pgs of reader + 2 books...*sigh* class isn't too hard as long as you read

This class, which focused primarily on the Ottoman Empire, was facinating and Tezcan is an excellent professor. For this class the reading load was quite substantial but the essays (three of them) were not absolute killers. A highly recomended professor
wonderful
baki is the best!! he is a very nice guy and very approachable, and he really cares that his students learn the material. would definitely recommend to anyone!
Great prof! Really cares about his students and whether or not they understand the material. So nice and not a hard grader. It's a little challenging if you don't have a background in Islam, but the essays aren't impossible and he gives you the exact midterm questions as a study guide. Good class and excellent professor. :)
I must say I was a little bit disappointing in this class. Tezcan overall is nice guy and knows his subject but doesn't do a very good job articulating it. His lectures seemed a little all over the place and hard to comprehend. The topic itself is abstract so you especially need alot of clarity. Overall, an OK class, not too difficult
He was a really nice guy. But his class was very confusing. He had us buy 6 books and a reader. His classes are based on class participation and he jumped around a lot.
Baki Bey was a really truly nice guy, and I fully recommend his summer program in Istanbul. It was SO MUCH FUN. I really came away with a lot from his course, both about Ottoman and modern Turkey.
Very nice guy. Loves to engage the class in class discussions so you should do the readings! The readings are kind of long but they'll help you A LOT on you papers. Papers aren't hard at all if you do the reading.
Interesting class with a ridiculous courseload. We had to write 4 papers total, do a presentation, prepare for pop quizzes, and participate in discussion. He only gives you 1 week to write each paper. This class will be a pain if you have a hard TA.
Prof. Tezcan loves the subject he teaches and it shows in his lectures and material he assigns to read. His lectures are intriguing and encourages questions.
The subject that professor Tezcan teaches is VERY interesting! I did think that the assignments he gave for the class were too detailed for an "introductory" course. If you are looking to major in history, this would be great. I'm not, so i think i learned about stuff that is useless to me. Not to mention, i didn't like his scattered grading scale.
professor tezcan is very interested adn knowledgable about his subjects. he gladly pauses midsentence to answer any question that students have and this makes for a good learning experience. expect a ridiculous load for an entry level class (over 1000 pgs in 10 weeks including the reader). pop quizzes make attendence essential
The reader is expensive, but the textbook is cheap so it evens out. He's a nice guy and a VERY fair grader. For the midterm he gives you a complete pool of questions which makes it easy to get 100%+ if you prepare. Attendence is mandatory but he's very engaging if you've done the reading, which is mandatory but he doesn't enforce. Take him!
Very smart guy, approachable and super helpful. Understanding of students, easy quizzes, but the papers were challenging.
Really interesting class, for religion in government. Hella loved it!!
Very clear and very knowledgeable about the topic. Everyone said it was a lot of reading, but I particularly enjoyed it!
He was very enthusiastic about teaching and had lots of interesting topics and guest speakers. Grading of papers was very hard though, and the class turned out to be a lot of work for a 2 unit class.
I hated this class. 80% of grade was from papers- graded harshly. 20% quizzes on smartsite. I had a problem with smartsite and he refused to take responsibility for anything. I really disliked his attitude. It was supposed to be about religion and politics and the ethics of it but it ended up being the opposite. Too many headaches for 2 units
Awesome professor, really enjoys his subject. Gives a healthy amount of reading, and structured the class into three essays. Show him that you care, go into office hours, and also meet with the reader. Baki always wants to chat with students and will be a great influence on you. This class gave me a great insight into Islam, take a class with him!
A bit difficult for a 2 unit class. 80% of the grade is harshly graded papers. They can be tricky, but going into his office hours for help of the papers is so helpful. You don't need to go to the lectures every time, but it does help on the papers. You won't really need to do the readings either. The quizzes are fairly easy as well.
A LOT OF READING! He is an expert on what he teaches and very willing to answer questions. Most of the grade is based on papers which he gives only one week to write. His TAs, like Naim, are hard graders. I was interested in the subject but this class really turned me off on it :/ It was a little too much reading for just an intro class.
Do not take this class if H Naim is your TA, grading is very inconsistent with the other TA in the same class. Baki is great, but the TA ruins the course. He is pretentious and arrogant and he does not have objective writing standards. If you get Annie, take the course.
Lots of reading. More than I could bear. I had to bs a lot of essays because the topics required reading AND understanding of the topics presented AS WELL AS interpretation. I had Anne Marino for my TA, and she's the only reason I stayed in the class. She helped me, as I was a late add (don't do that by the way).
This professor really does his best to interest you in the topic. He is super sweet and will work with you to het that A you want. Theres a lot of reading in this class, and its not one you can miss. If you want an A work for it, otherwise theres no excuse to get anything lower than a B. You can skim through the reading and get a solid B. Take Him
3 papers 5-7 pages. No textbook, but he assigns a good deal of reading, 80-120 pgswk. Know how to skim & attend lecture to help comprehend the sources. No outside sources are required for the papers. I really loved this class. Tezcan is a world class scholar and I hope to take another course with him. He's very approachable, accommodating, kind.
This class is really eye-opening and introduces you to a whole other world regarding the Qur'an. A lot of reading is required but the midtermpaperfinal aren't hard. They are, however, all based on the readings and the lectures so attendance should be kept on point. Professor Tezcan is super helpful and inspiring, easy to talk to and great teacher
The class was not what I expected. It was more discussion oriented than anything else. The midterm was extremely easily but the final, which was a paper, was not. Both the final and the paper were based on the readings. There is a lot of reading, most of which I did not do. I was upset when I found out I was off by .6% from an A-.
Class was more of a very interesting discussion about the readings. There was A LOT of reading for this class, but it wasn't imperative that you do all of it. Definitely take this class it's very interesting, Baki is awesome, and you will learn a ton about the Qur'an and what I believe to be one of the most misrepresented religions in the world.
Dr. Tezcan is really nice, but his lectures tend to be disjointed and hard to follow. Be prepared to spend time puzzling out what he means (readoffice hours). But he tends to be a fair to generous grader, and will pull out all the stops to help you (if you go in w. a specific question and don't let him get sidetracked). Overall good, but confusing
HIS 80 is one of the best classes I've taken at Davis. I learned a ton of very important information. To ace the quizzes, you have to attend lectures and take good notes. To ace the papers, you need to do a little more reading, but overall it really is manageable Professor Tezcan is so energetic, I always looked forward to going to this class.
HIS 80 is the second class I've taken with Tezcan. His lecture style is a little less structured than most, but he's probably one of the most engaging lecturers I've had. Grading for this class is based on short online quizzes and five 2-page papers. He drops the lowest score of each. Lots of reading, but you can skim for quotes for the papers.
HIS 80 was a VERY interesting class! Dr. Tezcan has a thick accent, but the lectures were always very interesting. The quizzes are incredibly easy as long as you attend lecture, take good notes and do the readings! Dr. Tezcan was always prepared for lecture and very knowledgable. I will definitely take another class with Dr. Tezcan!
You must attend class and do the readings in order to pass because his power points are very minimal, but that is expected. His accent makes it hard to understand but if you pay attention in class the quizzes are easy, the papers are the hardest part. I found the prompts very vague/confusing but I got good grades. I would recommend the class
Easiest class I've taken at UCD, History 80, co-taught with another professor. Showed up, wrote three essays the night before and got an A. Interesting professor with good insight to the topic. Seemed actually interested and enthusiastic. Some may find his "accent" hard to understand but I don't know what they are on about.
Lectures are so hard to follow. He talks so fast and he has an accent which makes it difficult to understand him. He covers so much material in his PowerPoints and either puts no words on his slides (just pictures) or all words (like paragraphs). He's passionate about history but I found his teaching style overwhelming and confusing to follow
professor tezcan is the cutest thing out there! he has an adorable sense of humor, which helps his lectures become more interesting. he does have an accent, but I never found that to be a big issue. the class itself is very easy, would definitely recommend!
Dr. Tezcan was very nice, and very passionate about the subject-matter. His lecturing style is a bit confusing, however the quizzes/papers are more than fair. Always willing to help out after class.
With all respects to Prof. Tezcan who is highly knowledgable about the US's involvement in the Middle East, I attended this class at most 4 times (3 times to turn in my 3 essays) and received an A. The readings changed my perspective on the Middle East completely, I was ignorant. You need the readings for the essays however easy class! No stress.
I'm not sure he's still in the country, but he and Prof. Oropeza did a great job tag-teaching this class a couple of years ago. The books he assigned us to read were interesting and got us thinking about the region in a different way. His real life experience obviously showed through his lectures.
Such an excellent professor. Honestly one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable people I have ever met. He makes an effort to know you, he is always accessible outside of class, and he is very passionate about the material. Take this class if you are interested in Middle East studies. There is a two page, three page, and two five page papers.
So, I took HIS 80 with Prof. Tezcan SQ 2020 (quarantine edition). HIS 80 is only 2 units, yet Tezcan teaches it like a normal 4 unit history class. The midterm and final are heavy on the readings; it was rare to see stuff from the lectures. The readings are a lot, about 12 pages every day of class. For a 2 unit class, that's a bit excessive.
So you see that review from May 17th? I want to make a correction to that one. Prof. Tezcan is so caring in office hours. I highly recommend going to his. After the midterm, the class became much easier, and from what I know, SQ 2020 was the first time HIS80 was a 2 unit class. Before it was 4. Overall, Prof. Tezcan is awesome and he cares a lot :D
Professor Tezcan is one of the best professors I've had at UCD. This quarter (spring 2020) was during the pandemics and the protests. Professor Tezcan was super understanding and did everything in his power to make this quarter as easy to swallow as it could've been. Easily one of the best professors on campus, and his class was super informative.
To start, I took this class only to complete a GE requirement. While I have little interest in the topic, I had no idea what was going on in this class. The lectures are unorganized making it difficult to study for the midterm and final. For a 2 unit course, it takes a lot of work to get an A. I do NOT recommend taking this as a GE.
I took HIS 6A with Professor Tezcan and I am beyond glad I did. His mandatory lectures are a bit dry but packed full of information nonetheless. His essays are based on the reading that the student body generally understood the best. Just do the short readings for the essays at the bare minimum and you'll do fine. 1 required discussion presentation
Online lectures are pretty boring but they make a lot more sense if you do the readings prior.
I took this class to branch off from studying American history, and I became fascinated with the history of the Middle East. Professor Tezcan genuinely cares about his students, is highly accessible outside of class, and isnt a harsh grader. The class isnt so easy that you dont have to make an effort, but if you do the readings youll be fine.
Professor Tezcan was a great professor. We talked about many things and I learned a lot from this class. It showed that he was passionate about the subject matter. Because this was during the Sheikh Jarrah evictions, he also provided additional material on Palestine and even spoke about it during class, which was nice of him.
Professor Tezcan is a great professor! He is very knowledgeable about the course material and his lectures are interesting. His slides can be wordy at times so try your best to focus on the important points. His tests are easy if you understand the course material and do all the readings! Overall not a hard class as long as you put in the effort.
All papers are based HEAVILY on readings. Class is 3 long papers with about 7 sources (all assigned readings) each. Lectures are good for asking questions, otherwise, they're meh as he mostly rambles. However, he does an attendance grade. On papers he doesn't grade too hard + gives good feedback. Go to class, do your readings and you will be fine.
really interesting class, wished I pay more attention in. there are attendance 1 question quizzes and no hw, just midterm and final. His slides are a bit wordy but an not bad as a lecturer.
Tezcan is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, so lectures are pretty interesting to hear. Just make sure to pay close attention because he doesn't do recordings and his slides sometimes don't include everything you need to know on their own. Papers are straightforward if you skim the readings, and the tests are extremely fair.
As long as you do all the readings and come to class you should be able to get an A. The midterm and final are all based on readings and lectures, and you get a study guide for it. There is also an extra credit opportunity worth 2 quiz points.
There's 3 papers in total (5-7pgs). My advice: do the readings when assigned. What I did: did all the assigned readings in 2 days before essay is due... please don't do what I did. The essays aren't hard but there is a lot of reading(a lot). Attendance is graded by a quiz at the end of the class, answer is provided. Doesn't record lecture
Literally just show up to lecture and you'll pass. Great prof, very knowledgable and passionate. Great GE to take, relevant content worth learning about. 2 exams, midterm and final, where study guide is released before hand that has the questions that will be on the exam. Join the class discord if there is one!
Lectures are amazing for anyone truly interested in this class! 3 papers for which he gives outlines and grading criteria. There are daily participation quizzes worth one point but very easy and he usually gives out the answer. He's also very lenient with extensions. I wish I could take him again!
Professor Tezcan is one I wish I could take again. He is very understanding of personal circumstances and overly qualified in his teaching subject. Lectures aren't recorded and each ends with a quiz that he answers in lecture. The lowest one is dropped. His essay prompts are easy and relatively fun for testing purposes.
Overall I think this is a hard class for me. If you're an international student who doesn't really have much background in history classes, avoid this. Also, the teacher is super disorganized. He always announces important things super late. I spent so long time working on my essay, and he canceled it super last minute.
HIS 080 was such an enjoyable experience for me because Professor Tezcan was such an incredible lecturer, clearly passionate about the topics being covered within the course. He was more than accommodating, and was easily accessible outside lecturers. Class was based on participation (easy quizzes after each lecture), with a midterm, and a final
Prof Tezcan is a very accessible and very open professor. He had a very clear and easy class structure, grading and workload were alright - so long as you admit you're not going to get to a fraction of the assigned reading before skimming through them to write one of your four essays. My only - was that the essays and lectures don't overlap.
Professor Tezcan cares a lot about his students, but his lectures are not coherent. He goes from topic to topic without making clear connections, which can be hard for a student who lacks a background in middle eastern history. The class was graded on three 5-7 page papers. Readings can be dense, but important so it helps to keep up with them.
Professor Tezcan was amazing! (Beware: I enjoy history - if you do not like reading or history... it may be boring because of the reading) However, I think non-humanity-oriented people would easily pass this class and enjoy it. It is only graded through the quizzes (his way to track attendance) and they're pretty easy, a midterm and the final.
his lectures are interesting but the papers can be tough if you don't pay attention or take notes but he doesn't grade too harshly. grades are based on the three papers and daily 1 point quizzes in class that he usually gives the answer to. overall I learned a lot!!
Easy course with quiz credit from attendance where he basically tells you the answer in class (5 lowest quizzes are dropped). A midterm and final but you are provided a study guide with an answer pool. Very unbiased, with amazing lectures and great optional readings.
I loved this class and I thought Professor Tezcan was great at discussing the intricacies of the Middle East. It's a very easy class, no papers other than a two page essay for the midterm and Final. Other than being easy, it's also very interesting and Professor Tezcan is very eager to answer questions. I would definitely take again
HIS080 doesn't really feel like a 2 unit course, it should be more imo. Tezcan is really nice and knowledgeable. Sometimes it was hard to follow the timeline of lectures, but I feel like I learned a lot. Attendance is mandatory, graded on midterm and final, and an extra credit writing assignment. If you need a 2 unit SS course, its a good option.
The class is super interesting and the lectures are great! The final and midterm and both relatively easy the class overall should be an easy a. Would definitely take again! I definitely learned a lot from this class!
Tezcan cares a lot about what he is teaching and although I am not really a history guy I found the content presented super interesting. Final and midterm were asynchronous and open note making them relatively easy. Tezcan assigns a 1pt quiz each lecture for attendance.
Not a hard class. Make sure to attend class (except 5) in order to get participation from his easy 1q. quizzes. One midterm that was open note, in our case, we got to take it outside of class. We only had to write one essay. This class got more interesting after the first midterm, but overall lots of information. DO THE STUDY GUIDES! :D (trust me)
He gives study guide and questions pool for midterm and final (almost all of them are asked). A preparation for that will make sure an A
Prof. Tezcan is a great lecturer and is very passionate about the subject matter. He does assign a lot of reading, but it is only needed to fill out the study guide, which is almost identical to the exams.
By far my favorite professor this year; he is very knowledgeable about the topic and can answer 99% of questions. I took advantage of office hours for a lot of the essays and received A's on all of them. Attendance is mandatory through small quizzes, but don't worry. Overall, I would take this professor again.
The entire grade is based on the one midterm and final, but they open notes and are easy to pass. He's very passionate, but his lecture is so dense, and sometimes he rants, which can get confusing and deter from the point. Readings are a lot (if you do them), but the class is overall easy, just a smidge dense.
i thought this class was really interesting. i do think there's a lot of readings assigned for a 2 unit class, but i missed a lot of them and got by just fine. lectures are very engaging and he definitely knows what he's talking about. nice to have an interesting class where i don't have to worry about my grade all the time.
He is very knowledgeable! But he talks fast during lecture. There are 2 exams (which are open note & online, so very easy). The class content is super interesting and important to know, but it felt slightly disorganized. Overall good course just wish he went a little more in-depth about subjects.
The midterm and final are worth 40% of your grade each but he is very clear about will be on the tests (and gives you the essay prompts + study guide a decent amount of time in advance). You do have to attend lecture, but you just need to pay attention and you should be fine! Great professor.
Goated professor. Tezcan is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows through his informative and interesting lectures. Aside from a lot of reading, there is no real homework, and he essentially gives you the answers to the midterm and final exams beforehand. Highly recommend him for an awesome elective and/or an easy A.
He truly cares about the learning of his students above anything else, being a 2 unit course there was not very much work outside of the class to do besides study guides for midterms and finals- which can be used on the test. Very easy class and I ended up learning a lot about the US in the middle east that I did not know before.
Professor Tezcan is an excellent teacher who truly cares about his students' success. He is always willing to help students out with assignments and is very clear on how they will be graded. Overall, one of the best, most caring professors in the history department and I would definitely recommend this class!
Professor Tezcan is one of the best professors I have had! He does an excellent job at explaining the material and his lectures are engaging. He is always available to chat about class during office hours and is open to helping students with their papers. There are a lot of readings and six writing assignments but the class is easy and interesting.
Lectures were very interesting and while there were a lot of readings and papers, the prompts are clear and indicate what readings to draw from. In total: three short essays, three long essays (including final, which is take home). Readings are incredibly dense and papers are reading-based; lecture is more supplementary, and you can miss up to 5.
Wonderful professor. Lecture heavy, but all slides are posted before class. Mandatory attendance taken through quizzes at the end of class, but the answer is always provided. There is a lot of reading on the syllabus, but the class was graded on a midterm and a final (with an essay prepared beforehand). Super sweet and funny professor.
There is a fair bit of reading to this class given it's only for two units, however it's all very entertaining and Dr Tezcan is a very engaging professor. At least for HIS 80 there is extra credit intended for you to make up attendance credit but you can still do it even if you don't need the attendance credit. 10/10 would recommend
Super chill guy, loves history and gives great lectures.
Awesome professor! You can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches. He assigns readings that are very heavy though. Nonetheless, I highly recommend as he's a sweet and very chill professor. He also got fire fits lowkey 🔥
I liked his class; it was an easy A if you went to lectures and did the work. The midterm and final were 40% each with an essay and MCQs. I spent 6–7 hours on the final essay because the reading was so boring, then he suddenly said, “surprise, no essay since you did poorly last time.” Seven hours wasted, but easiest A ever.
Although this class doesn't have a required textbook, there is a lot of reading. Reading the chapters he provides is essential for study guides, and in turn midterms. He also does participation quizzes near the end of every lecture, but it's easy and he provides the answers. Overall, Tezcan is a good lecturer, but don't expect it to be an easy GE.
Overall loved him. I didn't do any of the required readings but I learned a lot from his lectures. You can miss up to 4 of the participation quizzes and he gives a study guide for the midterm and final. Overall easy A if u can cook up a fire essay with no prior knowledge, like me!!
The only reason I got a C+ was because I missed attending a couple of lectures which affected my grade and also, having a second chance to take the final exam (I overslept the regular time ;-;) He was nice enough to give me a second chance which so tell you how nice this professor is! Both midterm and final are open notes!
Good professor, if you are looking for an easy GE, this is it. You have a 1-question quiz at the end of every lecture, and he provides the answer. You can miss up to 4. He gives a final and a midterm, but everything that is on the study guide will be on the exam so you won't see anything new. He also offers EC, not that u will need, but still nice.
The class is so easy. All you have to do is attend class. However, I didn't pay attention at all. Just go over the study guide, as it's exactly the same as the exams. However, I'm marking one mark because he cancelled the final essay on finals day. I spent around 4 hours writing and reading the article for him to cancel it randomly.
