I'm currently enrolled in Abdrisaev's class. His articulation is poor and he is difficult to understand. He comes to class unprepared and does not use outlines or powerpoint presentation, this with his articulation may might it hard for some to pass his class.
Prof Abdrisaev is a great teacher. English is NOT his first language, but he has a good command of it. His powerpoints were a WONDERFUL help and he is very concerned with the success of the students in his class
Great teacher. While not a native English speaker, Dr. Bek goes to great lengths to prepare for class and is very interested in making the class informative. In class discussions of current events were a great teaching and learning experience. A great opportunity to learn from a teacher with a different political culture.
Bek is a well informed teacher. I feel his International relations class is one of the most worthwhile classes I have taken. He is objective in his approach, and is able to encourage and allow each student to participate in discussion. His approach to students if one of respect, his experience as an ambassador adds volumes to what he presents
This is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. You cannot understand a word he says. His accent is so strong, he mumbles and says uh about every 3rd word. I do not feel like I learned anything. Attendance is mandatory because he knows if he doesnt make it mandatory, nobody will show up. It is a fairly easy class though, if you can read the book
he is very hard to understand and his accent is really thick and he mumbles a lot. He is a great guy but teaches off the subject 90% of the time. He gives tons of extra credit. Attendance is only ec. His tests are in a difficult format.I have learned a lot in his class..just not at all what is in the course description for that class.
Bek is a cool guy, but very hard to understand. He mumbles and says "um" a lot. He teaches strickly from powerpoint, exactly from the book. There are only 2 tests, and the questions are difficult to understand. Attendance is manditory, so sign the roll and then you can leave and use your time more productively elsewhere.
Bek has such a thick accent I was straining to understand him. He often speaks quietly and mumbles. He teaches using power point which is WORD FOR WORD from the book. The only reason I did fine was because I read the book on my own time; he is well qualified because of his education and experience, but teaching is definitely not his area.
He is hard to understand, but it is a way easy class. i don't think anyone has ever failed his class
He was a nice guy, but it was hard to pay attention in class because of the accent, and the exact reading of the powerpoints. But, it was an easy class because all you have to worry about is two tests and attendance, and the tests weren't hard at all. The review sheet for the first test honestly had the EXACT wording as the actual test.
Abdrisaev is one of the best professors I have had at UVU. He is extremely intelligent and an all around good guy. He is so good to work with you and is very down to earth despite his larger than life experiences as an ambassador!
I LOVED THIS PROFESSOR! HE IS ONE OF UVU'S BEST!
His accent is very strong when he speaks, but his American Heritage class is really easy. His Powerpoints are right from the text book. His study guide for the test is the exact copy of the test. It's hard to know what he wants as the answer sometimes, but all the answers are from the powerpoints, which he puts on line. Go to class every day!
Easy teacher. VERY THICK ACCENT. He's easier to understand the more you get used to listening to him. Two midterms and final with study guides. Attendance will help you immensely! He's kinda boring, but sometimes funny.
I couldn't understand what he said. All he used was power points and we didn't even get through half of the information we were supposed to learn in the class. Although he gives you all the questions that are on the tests and the answers are in the power points, which he puts on Electronic Reserve. I never used my book.
OUTSTANDING instructor! A language barrier initially (he's from Khazakstan), but once you get used to his speech, you'll find him to be an awesome instructor! I learned a lot from him!
He's a really nice guy, and the class is ridiculously easy. You have a midterm and a final paper, and that is it. Attendance is the other thing that makes up your grade. I probably spent about 4 hours on this class total the entire semester! He is kind of hard to understand, but he reads straight from powerpoints so it's easy to follow along.
Great teacher
Could hardly understand the teacher and he knows that. He gives you the test as a study guid so as long as you answer the questions before hand and memorize them you will pass. Easy A class but you won't enjoy the time in class or learn anything.
Yes, the class is tedious at times, but I don't think you'll find an easier American Heritage professor. Your grade consists of a midterm exam, final paper, and attendance. BEYOND easy! I'm really happy I took it from him! He's super nice, too.
Yes, his accent is difficult at first but you should soon be acclimated to it. He is very knowledge able and wants class participation more than anything else. Easy and educational.
Professor Bek is awesome! He is not the best teacher, but his different views are really interesting (he is from Kyrgyzstan. As a political science major, I enjoyed getting to know him. I never used the textbook. He is very helpful if you ever have a question. I will take more classes from him.
Prof Abdrisaev is very hard to understand and his quizzes and tests are even harder to read. English is not his first language. He is VERY helpful if you have any questions and will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Quizzes and tests are straight from his powerpoints and easy. I didn't learn a whole lot, but enjoyed him.
Bek, is a awesome teacher. Drops everything to help you. He is a little difficult to understand, since he is from Krygystan ,but if you ask him he will try to clarify. I personally found that when I tried to listen it was easy. to understand him. Tests are EASY!! He'll even let you argue if you think that a question was too hard!!
Instead of teaching us out of the book with his powerpoints this semester we were supposed to just know them & instead we'd talk about current events the whole time. if you didn't know every detail in the current event then he basically told you that you obviously didn't read it. I did not look forward to going to class, which was mandatory.
I did not learn one thing from this class. Bek has a new style of teaching where he no longer lectures. We spent every class period talking about current events. I could have read the newspaper and his powerpoints and recieved the same grade. But because attendance is 25% of your grade you are forced to sit through is class.
I did not learn a thing in this class. He does not teach from the book at all, in fact all he did was ask the class to discuss world news. The quizzes and tests were a joke, even with the questions given prior to the exam. Must show up to class everytime too, as participation is a huge percentage.
This professor is the worst I've ever had. He has such a heavy accent you can't understand a word he says, the quizzes are given whenever he feels like it and they have terrible grammar, the class is used to just discuss world news. He will insult the class as well if you don't agree with his views, and he brings his religion into class too much.
Yes he has an accent but he is a cool teacher. He learns your name and will do everything to help. If you get involved, know events, it's easy. Quiz's were all open book and he emailed us the questions to the midterm before hand. If you can handle the accent, take bek!
He means well but he is a horrible professor. It's very hard to understand him through his thick accent. I have not learned one thing in his class. He just talks about current events and then gives us quizzes and midterms and expects us to be able to understand them through his bad grammar. You have to show up to class too, which is a bore.
Loved him! If you go to class and listen to him talk you'll get use to the way he talks. He knows he's hard to understand and doesn't expect you to all the time. Just read the text before class. He takes plenty of time on each chapter and covers important stuff. He usually emailed us the quizzes before and midterm and final.
Doesn't teach anything... All learning is done on your own with difficult to understand powerpoints. Don't take this class!
Great guy, wants students to get involved. If you are active in political extra-curricular activities you will do better in the class. helpful if you ask him to be. Actually grades on a curve so watch out.
Bek(as he likes to be called) is an awesome teacher and know what hes talking about. He used to be an ambassador to the US. Yes, sometimes he is hard to understand everything from the tests and quizzes comes straight from the book and ppoints. If you get involved in the clubs he like it even more and he often brings his ambassador friends to class.
Beck is a good guy, but he changed his approach this semester and made things much more difficult in his classes. He stopped giving study guides and made things more difficult to learn.
I took him for International Relations of the Middle East. Bek is simply one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. If I had the time and the money, I'd take every class he teaches for fun. Lectures and discussions are crystal clear and very stimulating. Read your book, read the newspapers, and put your brain in gear. You'll learn a lot.
Beck is a good teacher and want you to learn. Its not about the book is the reasoning to it, plus his experience and knowledge help u to see things diferently. He has an accent and I do to and I dont complain about it, I do my best and he is aware of your efforts. If you study and get involve you will do great in this class. I took Int Relations.
Bek has been a great teacher this semester. I took the Intro to IR class from him. He goes out of his way to help his students progress far beyond the parameters of the class: he really wants you to get involved with the political realm on campus. Classes are a good mix of power points and discussion and even tests are great learning tools.
He is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He wants his students to be involved both on and off campus in politics and in the community. He has a great passion for International Relations and it's evident in his teaching. If you have late work or miss a test, he is more than willing to meet with you after class to do it.
Bek's IR class was great! It was easy, as long as you study. He is a good guy, and want you to get a good grade. You take a quiz on every chapter and study one country all semester. Textbook is very useful and well written. I cannot count how much extra credit he offered! I got an A, if not for the countless EC I did it would have been a B.
First day of class, I was overwhelmed by his accent, understood nothing. The second day it was tons easier to understand him, I got used to it quick. He is incredibly interesting, extremely flexible and understanding, outstandingly intelligent and insightful, and 100% respectful of student opinion. He was the Ambasador of Kyrgistan to the US.
I have taken classes from him a few times and I think he is one of the best professors for building up the students. He is a great resource for students. The people that usually don't like him are bad students.
Bek is great. Just do lots of extra credit. That's the key to his classes. You probably wont get an A on every test so just play on going to events and doing little write ups. He'll help you out if you have any questions. I've never met a professor more willing to work with you during office hours. Great class.
Bek is a wealth of knowledge! Attendance is a large part of your grade and he gives quizzes each week (kind of a pop quiz but once you get into the grove of class you know when they are coming. His accent is a bit strong, but you get use to it. Gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit. Very helpful!! I would highly recommend him.
Bak really is 100% there for his students! He brings Political Science to the here and now and makes it much easier to understand concepts. I had emergency health issues in the middle of the semester and he was VERY understanding. He offers lots of extra credit and shows you your grade at the beginning of every class. I would highly recommend him!!
Works hard to give students opportunities to build up CV's and grades based on articles and quizzes. You are required to produce power points and present them to classes, works very well with you to insure that information you provide is accurate.
Bek is the most infuriating professor I have ever had to deal with. He is completely frustrating, changes his policies and grading throughout the semester. He allows lots of extra credit but then doesn't apply it correctly to your grade. You have to keep up on your grade. I would never take another class from him and don't recommend him to anyone
Bek is always 100% there to see his students succeed! Former Ambassador from Kyrgyzstan, and he brings all those years of experience to the classroom. Yes, his accent is a little strong but you get use to it! Regardless of what other people say, if you show him respect he will reciprocate!
Beck is one of those guys that approaches teaching differently. He has a way of creating a learning environment that is not based on lecture. He is heavily reliant on 'experiential learning', despite the fact that this stupid catch phrase means very little. He is ALWAYS there to help and offers vast amounts of opportunities for you to succeed.
Bek is a great teacher and his real world experience makes his class so much more interesting. His grading criteria is explicit and is more than willing to help out students.
Definitely one of my most fascinating professors. He has a passion for politics, a wealth of knowledge, and shares much from his background as a diplomat. I can't imagine a professor more enthusiastic about helping students succeed and achieve career goals. He is willing to bend over backwards to help, but does also maintain high expectations.
One of my most awesome professors. He is very professional, knowledgeable, talented and and respected. He really cares about his students.
Took 3 classes from him. He is great, really cares about students and will go WAY out of his way to help you if you are willing to work. Great sense of humor though takes getting used to. His English is really good, its heavy Russian accent that is hard to understand. He knows his stuff, super smart, HUGE world connections. One of the best at UVU.
Class is run by an assistant teacher. Was never once able to contact actual professor.
Professor Bek offers unlimited extra credit. I failed every exam and still passed the class with an A. He wants you to stand out when you graduate and encourages you to go to events and submit a write up to him. If you go to office hours, come to class, do extra credit and read even a little bit you will get an A. Such a cool professor.
If you do take American Heritage online, just take a different class. He does not run it. It's run by an assistant teacher who also didn't do anything. You never get any feedback or better explanations for projects. I love history and I hated this class. I didn't learn. I read a textbook and memorized worthless facts to quiz.
His class is so freaking hard, I mean to be fair I have no interest in political science, but I still tried very hard and his class is very difficult. His accent is very thick and heavy, and it makes it difficult to understand what he is saying. He has weekly quizzes that he doesn't actually grade, he basically just has the class vote on the answer
The entire class is taught by a condescending TA. Do not take this class unless you had ancestors in America during the founding and you know tons of information about them, because every single assignment is linked back to this. The tests and quizzes are nonsense, its more about luck than actually knowing the answer. Dont take this class.
Bek is super caring and a good teacher. His quizzes and tests are difficult, so study hard for them. His class is all lecture and can get pretty boring if no one is discussing what is going on. The extra credit opportunities are plentiful however, so there is no reason not to get an A in his class. Make sure to submit an article each day for an A.
He is incredibly smart, but his accent is so thick I can barely understand him. He sounds like he's constantly mumbling, his words tend to string together, and he talks pretty fast. He's a great professor, but his lecturs are so hard to understand. So if you like to read, you'll be fine, because most of the stuff you can find in the book.
He cares about his students, and he offers tons of opportunities for extra credit.
POLS1000- Do not take this class. There is NO study guide for the the midterm or final, all quizzes are timed and permanently close after completion. There is a large family history assignment that extends throughout the entire course, so unless you have a deep family history it's tricky. Textbook is a difficult read. Weekly group discussions.
I didn't know much about the professor, but my TA was awesome! The class overall is pretty easy if you read the textbook. At the end of each week there is a discussion with your assigned group about each chapter, as well as a 10 question quiz. There is also 5 family history assignments which are pretty easy as well.
Whoever on here gave Bak anything below a 5/5 has no soul and hates themselves. He is perfect. He would give his limbs to help his students succeed. He is so focused on making sure students have an experience that they can take with them after they've graduated. He offers so much extra credit, it's impossible to not get an A.
Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan for a dozen or so years? It shows. Professor Abdrisaev is very smart, experienced, and kind to his students. The quizzes for this course were pretty standard, but there was a high emphasis on debate and working to understand the correct answers after the quiz. He has a thick accent, but it's worth working through.
Professor Abdrisaev does have a really thick accent, but nothing that reading the material before class doesn't solve. He genuinely cares about students, wants them to get involved with the community and get first-hand experience more than anything. If you get involved, do the reading, and come to class, you will pass.
You take a mid-term a final, two papers and chapter quizzes about every other week. He lets you pick a country at the beginning of the semester. The rest of the semester you turn in articles about that country each week. You compile articles and write two papers about what's happening in the country. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities.
He really cares about the students. I think his heavy participation oriented style of teaching can sometimes slow class down, but if you are someone who likes to participate in class and discuss controversial topics then you'll have a great time and a fun learning experience.
This class helped me understand more about myself because of it breaks down relationships between governments and the factors that matter in those relationships. You should be engaged. Some students didn't think they had to be in class, some didn't think they had to read, and they did terribly. If you genuinely learn, you will do very well.
Three years after graduation and Professor Abdrisaev is still remembered as a real gem I cam across. He's the real deal. He cares about students and their success. He's damn good human being. The real world is cut-throat at times and those that supported you, encouraged and cared about your success will be remembered.
The Professor has a TA and she was doing all the work and grading and talking to us. I think I got 2 emails from the actual professor. There was also a big assignment I had to do and after I submitted, I emailed the TA and she didn't even read it, she just changed my grade instantly. I personally didn't like the workload and the text book was awful
Intro to international relations (online) consists of reading the textbook, viewing the powerpoint, or watching his lecture (which are typically long and based on the powerpoint). Extra credit is given if you read news articles about the country you picked in the beginning of the class. Quizzes are hard due to the difficult content.
This class wasn't hard, but it's set up poorly. SO MUCH reading for a 10 question timed quiz every week. There was a huge family history assignment and unless you had ancestors that were best friends with Thomas Jefferson, you're going to have to guess on most of the responses. Almost every assignment is about your ancestors during the founding.
Took this class online so not a lot of in-person interaction. Weekly chapter quiz, current events (just look up an article), and weekly discussion board where you leave 2 comments. May sound like a lot but it's pretty easy. When I had questions about an assignment, he was willing to help and was responsive. Recommend him
I took POLS1000 online, he seems like a pretty good teacher but I talked to one of his assistants more. There are discussions every week and quizzes every week. There a couple of major projects, which are pretty easy if you dont procrastinate. They are basically graded on completion. If you do all the work, its an easy A.
If you read the textbook youll do great! The quizzes are hard so you have to know the material in the chapter. You honestly get out what you put into it. I learned a ton and it was my favorite class this semester. The textbook was well written. Different projects connect the material to your ancestors, so the history feels more personal.
He has a strong accent which, at times, made it difficult to listen to his recorded lectures. I normally just looked at the slides he posts to prep for a test/quiz. I ended the class with over a 100% because of how much EC is given. The discussion post responses only have a 1 day window which make it harder to work ahead. He is responsive to emails
This is one of those professors who will spend whatever time is necessary to help his students succeed both in class and in life. He is incredibly knowledgeable and uses it to mentor his students. His classes aren't lectures and it was easier to memorize since we all discussed it as a class. He offers a lot of extra credit so it's less stressful.
My first political class and it honestly wasn't that bad(Took online). There was a few big assignments but if you did them they weren't hard. Most of the time you will be typing discussion boards and taking the quiz every week. Not a bad class and easy A if you do the work.
This class is the easiest I have ever taken. The content is accessible online. He gives SO MUCH extra credit. Do the assignments, and you'll do just fine. This class was very informative, but it was hard to stay interested. Lectures can be boring, and makes it easy to drift off. If I needed POLS 2100 credit, I would take this class.
Dr. A is a super awesome professor that cares deeply for his students and gets so excited for you when you understand and succeed. He gives out SO MUCH extra credit it's almost impossible not to get an A. He has a very strong accent making it difficult to understand and he does call on students very frequently. If you pay attention you will be good
I really appreciated Professor Bek's class and I feel like I learned a lot. It's clear he cares about the subject and even more about his students. He offers up to three points of extra credit every single week and it's so helpful. There are two easy papers and other than that, it's a weekly quiz and the readings. I always enjoyed his lectures.
Bek has a lot of assignments, but they don't take a lot of time. He takes attendance every class so you will need to go. Hard to understand at times but a decent professor.
This class is very easy. The Professor gives tons of extra credit, I took his class online, and he would reward extra credit to show up on the live stream; it was not mandatory to attend. It does require a textbook. He cares about his students. He will help you with anything if you reach out to him and tell him that you are struggling.
The Professor cares about his students. He will help you with anything if you reach out to him and tell him that you are struggling. I took this online, and he is swift to respond to you to make sure you understand the material; in the discussions, his primary purpose is for you and your peers to converse about what you did and did not understand.
Professor Bak wants his students to succeed. He is available outside of class if you need help. This course is heavy on homework, however, there are also a lot of extra credit opportunities. You will learn about the Constitution!
GREAT PROFF!!! One of the best at UVU. He does have strict tests, but he does offer tons of extra credit so you can literally go from 60 to 130 % at the end of the term when he puts in extra credit. He is always willing to help students learn more, and I would highly suggest going to his office during hours and getting to know him.
This is my second time having Bek as a teacher. He can be hard to follow sometimes but overall he really knows his stuff and loves his students. He will encourage you to take part in extracurricular activities and wants you to get involved. My biggest frustration was just that he often lets a few students consistently monopolize the conversation.
Overall this class was super easy. It was all online and everything was formatted well and you always knew what was expected of you. There are tons of opportunities for extra credit in this class which can really pad your grade if you're struggling. 10/10 would take him again!
I took the online class with him and several other professors. If you have a chance to take POLS1000-X01, do it! We focus more about ancestry than politics. The quizzes are a little tough-- but google and the books are your friend. Everything is online, everything is spelled out for you. Very easy! Took me an hour out of my week to do this class.
This was honestly a pretty good and easy class. The expectations were clear and he was very available outside of class (even in an online class). He responded pretty quickly and the quizzes and assignments weren't too bad. Take him if you want to get pols1000 over with!!
Prof. Abdrisaev's class is extremely easy, and yet extremely time consuming. You have to read the textbook so, so, so closely to do well on the quizzes and tests. There is a lot of extra credit, and it's easy to get a good grade, but I didn't necessarily enjoy the class.
Not the hardest class and the structure wasn't too terrible, it was just difficult to understand him and all the lectures and materials are from the department or the textbook. Your weekly quizzes had answers online, and even the midterm and final had answers on quizlet. Lots of extra credit opportunities though that are easy to do.
Took online & have mixed feelings. The Professor and IA's were so nice and helpful. There were lots of options for extra credit. The cons are that the tests were hard and SO LONG. You would need to memorize the whole textbook and read between the lines to get an A on the tests. The professor won't let you fail, but it won't be an easy A.
I like Bek's approach to teaching on paper. Having students follow current events in a country of their choosing, and then applying those events to theory discussed in class is a good idea on paper, but I felt like it robbed the discussions of the potential depth that was there at times. His classes are painfully easy though.
He is knowledgeable about the topics he teaches but he can be hard to understand and can let the discussion get away from him. His lectures are hard to follow at times and the weekly quizzes can be frustrating since he draws from the textbook and the slides but there are so many opportunities for extra credit it's fine if you do poorly on those.
This class should be an online class, I don't understand why attendance is necessary since the lectures are boring and unhelpful. The assignments sometimes don't make sense and are usually busy work. Don't waste your money buying the textbook for this class since he doesn't use it at all but insists that you should buy it.
Very lax course - Easy A. Lot's of extra credit!
He is a sweet man and really cares about his students. He provides lots of extra credit if you feel like you struggle in test taking he makes it possible to catch up. I really learned a lot in the class and I appreciate all the support he provided to his students. Good man!
The TAs are the best and will help you out if you need help. The class was pretty simple with readings, then quizzes, and discussions. Make sure you turn in your work, and you'll be fine. There is a lot of history about the colonization of the Americas. Tests are open note, and there is an interview you will have to do (but it wasn't too hard).
The quizzes and tests rely on the textbook which is pretty dense, but they are open note/open textbook. The only reason I didn't get a better grade was because I didn't complete everything on time. The interview project is a long process that requires a lot of effort and time, but seemed like it was graded more on completion and not harshly graded
