He's a pretty easy teacher for Hindi, but a lot of my friends told me he's rather hard in his religion classes. The man knows his stuff though and the classes are interesting.
Hebbar is definitely a cute little man that I just want to keep in my pocket. His vast stores of knowledge are amazing. The class is amazing to be in, I learned so much cool stuff. Unfortunately, the tests are HARD HARD HARD!!!
Very knowledgable professor. However, his tests are all about memorizing terms in languagues that will not all be familiar to most students. Rarely are students ever asked to think about the subject; only to memorize hundreds and hundreds of terms.
Dr. Hebbar is AMAZING! I learned so much from him, but be careful, lots of memorization is involved. He's not that hard, you just have to be able to memorize terms and concepts -- and you don't necessarily have to apply them, just memorize.
Hebbar's course is about memorizing hundreds of foreign terms and dates. You don't learn a thing about the actual subject of Eastern Religion that's not based on rote memorization. Knowledgeable professor, but teaching style for REL 002 is not great.
This class was HORRIBLE. Its all about memorizing the most obscure, useless information imaginable in about 20 extremely unfamiliar languages. I still have no understanding of Eastern religions. However, despite practically failing, he still gave me an A.
Hebbar is possibly your worst choice for an Honors prosem or a religion class. He teaches lists and lists of foreign (usually sanskrit or chinese) words that you must memorize for the tests. He never teaches any concepts and will never learn your name!
Perhaps the single most brilliant professor I've ever had. Although sometimes this doesn't help his clarity, he does know his subject(s) very, very well. Classes consist of his lectures and basically the finals about those lectures. Challenging.
knowledgeable but arrogant. very difficult tests, lots of memorization.
Difficult! Mostly memorizing names, dates, languages. No discussion regarding religion. No critical analysis. No open forum. He feeds you information and you basically memorize for tests. I got an A - but had to work HARD for it.
One of the smartest men I've ever met in my life. Any class Professor Hebbar teaches, I will take because of the amount of knowledge he puts on the table for each subject he teaches.
Do NOT listen to any of the comments that rated him high. Who cares if he is a knowledgeable professor... his teaching syle is really bad. LOTS of memorization of long unfamiliar terms. You're hand will fall off b/c of all the notes you MUST write down to do well on tests. Bring a laptop if you can.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! I would rather cut off my leg using a butter knike than take this course again. Hebbar knows EVERY detail about every eastern religion and expects you to know them too. You have to memorize hundreds of obscure foreign terms and dates and end up learning nothing about religion.
ok, for serious, this class is the equivalent to shooting yourself in the foot. the man is a genius, but he expects you to be able to regurgitate the mad stuff he can every 3 weeks, which is impossible. but if your grades are good enough so that you can openly accept a C or less, by all means...
This professor knows his stuff. The material is hard and there is a lot to know, but he gives good, clear lectures. If you study and go to class you'll probably do fine.
Very difficult, lots of memorization. You have to pay close attention and take very detailed notes all during lectures. His quizzes and exams are very difficult but he curves everything. I failed 3 quizzes and got a D- on the midterm and he still gave me an A.
I had him for minor rel of india. Must attend class cause he gives u the essay Qs before hand- based all on class notes. So the class is not that bad, kind of hard grader for test but even with 3 Bs i got an A in the class! The field trips are interesting but far, friends with cars is a +!
hebbar is a great teacher. he is incredibly intelligent and knows his material very well. going to class is a must. he gives essay questions before the exam so it's a lot of memorizing but not too hard of a grader. take this class it's really interesting!!
knows his stuff and a very good teacher. be prepared to work hard. you have to attend class b/c the exams are based on notes. but he gives you the questions before the test. only downsides are he's kind of a hard grader and there a ton of, literally like 8, papers due towards the end the semester.
I do not recommend this class to people with no Hindi background. Although the grading takes your previous knowledge into account, unless you have a serious interest in the language- don't do it! But if you do- its a good time.
He's impossible.
You have to work hard, but you'll learn a lot. His old tests can be found in the University Archives, and he uses a lot of the same answers.
If you are simply looking for an interesting class to fill your GCRs, this is most definitely not the class. Extraordinarily difficult-quizzes and exams consisted of obscure information. Still, in the end, I deserved a C and got a B.
class is really hard but there is a huge curve, especially if you express concern, if you are interested at all take this class and you should do decent. dont worry about the quizes, they are impossible and everyone fails
His Intro to Easter Rel is the hardest class I've ever taken, but my favorite. Definitely don't take it just to fill a credit, but if you're interested in it you will learn so much. He's the smartest man I've ever met, knows everything, and even though his tests are hard if you study you'll feel really accomplished when you pass.
This is a very difficult course, but it's not impossible. He tests on dates and tiny details rather than the main idea, but if you can memorize and retain info just for the quiz, you'll do fine. He's VERY knowledgable about the subject, and you can tell he enjoys it.
really sweet guy, but really tough quizzes and tests. everyone fails, no joke but he curves the grades. must visit temples in va and md, which are far and a pain in the ass to get to(metro goes about half way). the material's interesting, but he's very soft-spoken and has an accent. this is not a gpa booster, but you can study from his old tests
He is an absolute genius. Honestly a brilliant man, but this class is by no means an easy. I have never had to work so hard for an A.
He seems like a nice guy. I wouldnt mind sitting down and having a beer with the man because I'm sure we would be able to strike up an interesting and fascinating conversation. Only bad part about his class: Asks questions where dates that differ by one year or foreign spellings that differ by one letter will cause you to fail.
I wanted to kill myself. Lectures were ok but WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING. He gives you the essay questions in advance, but the rest of his questions are on little details. Start studying weeks in advance...
The course was very challanging. It would be a good idea to use a laptop and pretty much transcribe the lectures because he expects unbelievable detail in the exam questions. He is very knowledgable and obviously enjoys what he is teaching but I wouldn't take the class unless you were really willing to devote alot of time to preperation.
VERY interesting class, very interesting field trips (3). Enjoyed the lectures, but the big drawback for the course were the quizzes and exams...his questions test you on very technical information, usually in foreign languages, so test prep more or less becomes a memorization game. Good class though, and he give a really big curve.
Brillant professor yet difficult, highly detailed class. Dont take it unless you are interested in the subject and willing to devote a lot of time to the subject.
Everyone says his class is really really hard but honestly it's not that bad. Just write down EVERYTHING that he says in class and memorize as much as you can before quizzes and tests. He also gives you a big curve at the end of the semester, so if you're basically around a C after the final you'll end up with at least an A-.
He's very details oriented. He allows a one page list of terms/names on exams HOWEVER expects you to repeat 100% of his info in his lectures. Unless you're willing to never miss any classes do not take because he pulls at least 1 exam question per class. Work load huge! 10-1 page papers, 1 10 page paper, 2 field trips, and 3 3 hr exams
Practically a guaranteed A- if you show up to class and put in the effort. Don't expect an A in the class unless he likes you. My friend, who grew up speaking Hindi, didn't get an A even though her test grades were all A's. Ridiculous.
'Sadist' is the word I would use...You've gotta take notes on literally every word he says and then spit it all back up for the tests. Plus, there was an inordinate amount of work at the end. He's a cool guy, very nice, and it's really interesting stuff, but you definitely need to work for your grade!
Incredibly intelligent and passionate about his subject. I loved listening to him speak, but studying for quizzes and tests became a nightmare.
As everyone said before: extremely detail oriented. He makes sure to warn everyone about this before really going into the material, but its difficult to truly appreciate that warning before you take one of his tests. The class is essentially regurgitation. Be expected to memorize rediculously minute facts that you will never need to know again.
REL02 WORST DECISION OF MY LIFE. I don't know why people on here are so enthusiastic about him. This class almost made me cry multiple times, don't take it, its terrible unless you want to devote your life and 300 notecards per quiz to it.
He knows dates and facts, but discusses little about phil. We never discussed in depth any E. phil. It lead me to the conclusion that while hes book smart, he may not understand the full philosophic implications of the East. The exams are just vomiting EVERY SINGLE note you ever took in the class IN DETAIL back up. class is worthless RE philosophy
Introduction to Eastern Religions was my hell. Hebbar is terrible. He does not speak loudly enough, writes in tiny sanskrit, and teaches it like it's a specialized course on each religion. The major concepts are lost amidst 3 trillion insignifigant dates and minor figures. He's very knowledgable, but should not be teaching an introductory course
He gives you warning ahead of time that this is going to be a very detailed oriented class with lots of new content. However, he sends the essay questions for the tests a week beforehand so you can prepare, which is much more than any other professor does. If you do the work its an easy class. (I have a 100%)
For the Hinduism class, you should be either from India or at least be Hindu before you take it. He does give you study sheets but unless you know exactly what he wants (above and beyond notes and reading from class) you will not do well. It's a class catered toward those who have grown up in that culture. The rest of us are completely lost.
he reuses all the quizes and so the SA test files were my life. the midterm and final usually include questions from the quizes. lots of work and field trips that were very tedious and expensive. you learn details but no major concept. a lot of work, hard class, and you dont learn anything useful
This man is brilliant, but this class is TORTURE. If you want to memore hundreds, yes hundreds, of the most random, unfamiliar terms, wake up early on Sundays and spending $ on cabs to virginia to see temples, then take it. If not, then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I would rather pull of all of my fingenails then take this class again.
Interesting lecturer, unfortunately you can't sit back and enjoy; you need to write down everything he says; dates, figures, and words/terms in foreign languages. Quizzes/tests focus on details (did this happen in 1450, 1452, 1500, etc.) and are very difficult, but easy grades on reports for films and field trips (yes, field trips) make up for it.
Loved his lectures. He definitely kept me interested in the material, is very clear in his speech, and gave the class a lot of variety with films and field trips, rather than just lectures. Textbook use is minimal, the majority of the notes come from his lectures. All tests were mult. choice, and are really easy if you study with flash cards.
Great Teacher, but memorization is the key in this class. It was very interesting to go on the field trips.
Expect a hand cramp and dead pens after every class. VERY detail oriented, tests are essay and he wants you to regurgitated every possibly thing he said in his boring lecture. I'm Hindu, understood the material, attended every class, and got As and B+s on the tests - and got a B for my final grade. Kids that weren't Indian were culture shocked.
I cannot believe this guy. The quiz I just took made it obvious that he picks out questions that make sure you write EVERYTHING down, not particularly learn everything. After spending 2 weeks on Buddhism, you'd think there would be at least one question on the life of the Buddha, but no.
I absolutely love this professor. He made me very interested in the subject matter. He is a very intelligent man and has been all over the world. I plan on taking more of his classes if i can. Detail oriented class. MEMORIZE, but if you go to class you can get an A
This is an extremely hard class. I went to every lecture, read every page of the required reading, and studied harder than I ever have in my life and got a B. On the plus side its a very interesting class and Hebar is really helpful if you go see him. If you arent going to work as hard as possible, don't bother taking the class.
Unless you like to sit there and write down every little word he says, then memorize your entire notebook of notes, then write down your entire notebook of notes for the test then don't bother with this class. All it is is him up there for two hours talking away with no real explanation, not only that but the amout of work isn't worth the headache
Absolutely ridiculous. Tests on random and highly specific dates, names in many foreign languages. Material is interested - but the tests kill it. Nothing on major concepts or the important things concerning religion, no discussion, just memorizing thousands of facts. Curve that I was expecting was nonexistent this semester. DO NOT TAKE WITH HEBBAR
interesting class, but you really have to study before the tests. he gives you the exam a week before so you know exactly what to study for. but answers are essay style and you really have to write down everything he said in class. great class, but lots of work
I love this man! Introduction to Eastern Religions was the best class I have taken so far in college and it is half the reason I am considering a religion major. Hebbar is incredibly intelligent and his field trips to temples are wonderful. That being said if you're a huge slacker and don't want to go to class and take notes you will fail.
this class was really difficult; definitely interesting but the way he formatted his quizzes were impossible! 20 multiple choice questions covering a vast expanse of material that you can't possibly learn all of! plus he makes you go on expensive field trips
Hebbar is a great professor! But it's a difficult class, not an easy A. Go to class, take good notes, make flash cards and MEMORIZE them and you'll get good grades. If you stick with it, in the end he'll reward you with a good grade. Field trips are the best part of this class. If you're looking to actually learn, take this class!
Great professor if you have to take more than one religion class I highly recommend using hebbar as his classes are consistent and relate material.
He is a great teacher, he really knows what he is talking about and is extremely helpful.
Awful. If you hate learning, but are excited to be graded on your ability to memorize the Gospel according to Hebbar, and sitting for three hour tests, than take this class. Otherwise, run away.
He ruined my semester. He made us do so much work every week that I had no time for other classes, and the amount of information he expects a student to know during tests is way too much. I would have done much better, been more interested, and like the class much more if the amount of work was cut in half but still learned the same amount.
Impossible. Don't try going to him for help, it's useless
Go to every class and take notes on everything. memorize these notes and any handout. you will get a decent grade and if you find the material interesting all the better.
He speaks Pali. The man is a genius.
Prof. Hebbar is not going to force you to learn if you are not interested. If you are interested, you won't regret learning about Eastern Religions with Hebbar.
Lecture heavy course with an enormous amount of information. Record the classes and share notes no one can keep up with all of that detail. Also good for testing which he grades harshly and wants as detailed oriented answers as possible. No joke course. My hand was throbbing just trying to keep up withnote taking. Great very interesting course.
Unless you are absolutely fascinated with the subject, this class will be a huge waste. He is not helpful and does not care to motivate students to learn about the subject. Impossible to study for unless you memorize every word he says in the 2.5 hour class.
One of the most knowledgeable professors I have had at GW. He genuinely knows Eastern religions like the back of his hand. The course is very dense, so drink a cup of coffee before attending the lecture. You will learn a lot from Hebbar if you put forth the effort.
Although the subject matter was incredibly interesting, Dr. Hebbar made this class dull. Unlike typical university-level courses, which place new material in a global, historical context, this course focused almost entirely on rote-memory exams. I studied and made the grade, but I would have preferred to write papers and have discussions...
Do not take B.N. Hebbar's class. He is nearly impossible to hear or understand, and he does nothing to motivate or interest the students. I went to his office hours and asked for help and he suggested that I learn to speak Sanskrit.. very unhelpful. Hardest class I've ever taken, and least interesting.
Hebbar is a genius. But he is one of the least inspiring/charismatic professors on GWU's campus. Learning Eastern religions should be your primary reason for taking this class or you will fail. 4 quizzes (20 M/C's), 1 Midterm, 1 Final. Material is all from Hebbar. The book is worthless. Field trips & film reports boost grade by full letter.
I had a much better experience in doctrines & debates than his 190 class. He said outright the first day that it wasn't nearly as serious a course, and I ended up learning a ton (maybe because he was more relaxed). If you pay attention he's actually hilarious, and extremely knowledgeable. Worth taking, regardless of prior experiences with Hebbar.
Best professor I have ever had! Extremely intelligent. I took him for Indian Philosophy, Hindusim, Intro to Eastern Religions. Got As in all classes because his exams come straight out of his mouth. if you are a good note taker and hard worker you will do fine!
Oh my god. This class was the death of me. The material is super interesting, but he expects you to know at least 100 names and dates for each test instead of the actual concepts of religions. It's a lecture based class, which can be ridiculously hard to stay awake in. Unless you are extremely interested in religions, DON'T take this class.
Hebbar was one of my worst professors. Yes, he offers extra credit field trips, which would have saved my semester, but he denied that I got credit for them, even though I sent in a picture of myself at the location. He makes you memorize dates and names that have little to do with the religion as a whole, which killed my love for eastern religion.
Professor Hebbar is possibly one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Go to class. Write down everything he says. Exams are take home and come directly from the lecture. You will learn a lot but you have to work for it.
Hebbar is an amazing professor! One of the most intelligent people I've ever met. I took his Hinduism course, and it's clear that he is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to Eastern religions. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Taking intricate notes is necessary. All exams are take home, and he gives you a week to do them so they must be in-depth and detailed.
Hebbar is great! He is very explanatory with the material. All 3 exams for this class were take home, and if you took good notes they were straight forward and you can answer with exactly what he said in lecture. There is no homework except for the exams which are A LOT of work, and a 10 page research paper due at the same time as the 3rd exam.
Hebbar is one of the worst profs I have had at GW. He is so confusing and acts like you are dumb for asking questions. He is rude and condescending with poor social skills and is one of the most arbitrary graders I have ever had. He will mark things directly copied from notes wrong and say you need more details on 3 page responses. Avoid if you can
Prof. Hebbar as an amazing professor, and is one of my favorites at GW. He's really knowledgeable. The class itself was very interesting, and as long as you pay attention in class and take detailed notes you will be alright. Attendance is extremely important. There is no reading. Amazing class. Inspired me to become a religion minor.
He was very enthusiastic about the subject (although his tone didn't convey it). He was also very helpful in getting students to learn. But the class was based too much on lectures, and if you missed even a second of notes you were toast. He wanted every detail that he said regurgitated on take home exams and was very strict about that.
