Very good guy. Do the homework, and you will be fine. He tries to be funny by being sarcastic (and most times it works!)
Gotta love this guy...I still say hi everytime i walk by him
Prof. Maheswaran is a very nice guy. He cares if you get something or not and tets on what he teaches. There are no real surprises. The class is hard because it is Physics but it could have been worse. He's a pretty funny guy and really layed back.

BALA is the best.
he's kind of boring because he talks a lot, but he's a great teacher and his name is bala
Easy A
bala is a great great man.
Sure he is a good guy, and he can teach physics, but stay away from this guy for programming. He can not teach C++ worth****. I did not learn anything from him, everything I learned was from having to look at other people's programs. Never stops talking.
Bala is one of the greatest professors I've had. The material isn't terribly hard but he still goes the extra mile to teach his students. He'll help if you need it and explains every concept from the ground up.

He's good in Physics, but is the worse in Programmin C++. He can't teach programming, all he does is joke around.
Bala is the man, though he has a knack for wasting entire class periods without teaching a single thing and doesn't always (ever) make sense. Nevertheless, he's still wicked chill and the class is pretty easy.
hes alright, the class is easy
Bala, will you marry me?
makes turning things in VERY difficult because of that stupid FTP thing
If this was physics i would be in good shape, but being as it is a programming class, the TA seemed to know more about programming than Bala. Good guy though, jokes around alot
good guy, need to put in work to get good grade
pretty good professor, explains things well, easy grader.
A good teacher and tries to explain things many different ways. He's a pretty easy grader and wants you do do well.
gets kind of boring, you sit through 3 classes in a row with the exact same lecture. makes focusing difficult.
"There are many different different problems". Kinda funny in a weird way... but not really helpful when it comes to the course. He can teach alright but if you need extra help with something, you wont find much.
doesn't teach at all, good guy and funny man but can't really teach. go to TA's office hours if you want to learn anything....that and reading the whole C++ book....you can survive this class
HILARIOUS!! Once you get used to his inability to teach and learn to get by on your own (read the book yourself) then you can appreciate the hilarity of Balasubramanium Maheswaran. The class is freakin easy too - he practicly feeds you the homework answers. Either way you just gotta love Bala.
I admit, Bala can be a little confusing sometimes, but holy crap, he is hilarious. The first day of class he controlled the lights in the room from his desk and expected us to be surprised. He told us "This is intensity four." Very loveable.
This guys a character...if you pay a little attention in his class you'll be fine(i guess i'm biased because i knew programing). Will give you good grade if you do work. and DONT be surprise when he uses his name as constants Bala1 = 4 Bala2 = 5 x= Bala1 + Bala2 that cracks me up me all the time

Well well, "Does anyone have any questions? Would you like to go over any Parolems? If you have a Parolem, please tell me, I will do the Parolem." He's reallyyyyy funny :)listen carefully he has a very systematic way of teaching Physics and it's efficient. Do everything ur supposed. Very fair.
In class the other day, a student had to leave early. He tried to ask a question as he was going out the door, but Bala cut him off with "You are halfway out the door!" The student tried to respond, but Bala cut him off once again, yelling "DISSAPEAR!" I give him a Bala-Tastic out of Bala-Licious.
This class is a WASTE. There is very little to be learned from this class. He often makes a topic more confusing then it needs to be when he throws in un-detectable sarcasm. My most prominent memory of him was the entire class staring at him in silence with entirely blank and emotionless faces
response to asking how many points i get taken away on a hw assignment. "i dont like to take away points, i like to give points.....ill give you minus five points" funny guy just accept the fact ull have to teach urself
Bala is probably the weirdest man i have ever met... he is very unclear and theres always akward silence because nobody is ever sure if he is telling a joke or not. Plus, he always seems to make the simplest things the hardest... such as picking out partners for a project can take the entire class... but hes just super
Bala is one of those guys that really doesn't teach. skim the book, learn the engineering procecss, and realize he likes to make jokes (usally you can't tell they are jokes cause he keeps a straight face). And no matter what anyone tells you, expect a final!
he's so funny. awesome sense of humor. If you're not super interested in physics he's a great prof to have. teaches you what you need to know just before the quizzes. As long as you somewhat pay attention is class there's no further studying required to do well.
Once I understood the concept of Matlab & C++ the class was over. If you are a do-it-yourself kind of person you'd probably love him, but for dummies like myself, sitting there trying to understand what he is talking about is as hard as getting by with the material.
Very hard to understand. You will be learning the material on your own.
Hilarious but don't expect to learn too much from him.
Professor Bala is quite sarcastic, but a cool professor. Pretty much an easy A if you do all the work that is req'd.
The class is easy, the midterm and final are a joke. You actually have to go to class though. The major project is annoying but definitely manageable. Funny guy.
Funny guy. He makes alot of jokes that no one gets tho. For eng design, just show up and pay somewhat attention and work hard on your projects. For C++/matlab, copy down his examples, the homework is EXTREMELY similar most of the time if not exactly like it. and go to office hours, he might let you retake a quiz or two
hard to understand at times, he wants you to learn a lot of the material on your own, but his powerpoints are very helpful. the class is pretty boring overall.
Bala is a fantastic teacher, if you do not get a concept, just tell him and he will describe it over and over again. Hilarious sarcastic sense of humor. My fav was when this kid who always has questions but doesnt take notes or anything came into class like 10 min late and he just remarks "the class starts at 1:35 EASTERN standard time."I was dying!
He's sarcastic and funny. His powerpoints are useful and the class is usually interesting because he likes to joke around. Lots of projects, but none of them have been too hard so far. Just do the work and voila, decent grade. Quizes/tests aren't difficult as long as you know the material.
Even though I got an A in his class, Bala is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Do not be fooled by the good reviews, he is a totally different teacher when teaching MatLab/C++ than when he is teaching physics. Unhelpful and lazy, gougeyoureyes out boring, competative with students and a classtime waster. DO NOT TAKE HIS SECTION OF GEU111

Some of the material in the course itself is extraneous and unnecessary, that's why having Bala was AMAZING! Funniest teacher I've had so far and hes very leniant and just a really nice guy. If you get him for eng design keep him because youll LOVE that class, only the final project is hard. If you get him for eng comp, be prepared to learn NOTHING
No Comments
He doesnt have a very difficult style, he just doesn't know how to teach. its also hard to communicate with him sometimes as well. (language)
He's definitely entertaining, but doesn't know much about teaching. It should be an easy A, but it's boring.
Hard to understand, useless lectures and powerpoints. You might be able to learn a little bit through reading the text book or researching on your own in the design projects. If you want an easy A take this course.
Indian teacher with a thick accent and a satirical, sarcastic sense of humor. He throws out hilarious remarks that half the time enginneering students don't get or aren't paying attention to anyways. the class is usually pretty dry, so his dry humor compliments it nicely. lenient on grading, just do your work and you won't have any conflicts.
I had Bala for Engineering Design, and he is hands down the funniest professor ive met at NU. He has a dry sense of humor that is lost on those who sleep. He'll get the whole class to stare at the student and laugh until they wake up. "I have to find a solution to this problem..." he'll remark. Eng. Design is kind of an obvious class
Excellent teacher
Good teacher
Bala is the man. He's not the easiest but you will have a blast in his class. He is extremely funny even though he doesn't try to be. I love how he doesn't pronounce the b in problem, so it comes out as proll'em. Overall, he's a joy and prolly the best professor!
ABCD WHATEVER. Bala is the man, he's hilarious, you will have no prollem getting an A in any of his classes. Hilarious.
nearly indecipherable accent. powerpoint lectures are not planned very well, seems like he's making up the lesson plan on the spot most of the time. goes off on random tangents about math or physics when he's supposed to be teaching us C++. seems to think that if he asks "are you with me?" every other sentence, we'll understand what he's saying.
Bala is pretty much the man. enough said. be prepared to hear "prollem" (problem) "ahyuwithme?" (are you with me) and "supposay" ('suppose-say' is my best guess) quite a lot. doesn't take himself too seriously, funny guy (intentionally and unintentionally) and good teacher - but the accent will be hard to translate at first
His class is extremely boring! but he is a very easy and straight forward teacher
Bala is a good guy with a hilarious sense of humor. He has a pretty thick accent and his class is pretty boring, but he's a very easy grader Take this class with him if you're looking for an easier course load
Love Bala!
Bala's vast knowledge of physics far surpasses his knowledge of the english language. There is an attractive force between me and him, but he told me not to talk about it because it is very small. His tests have equation sheets with only necessary formulas. Also, additional formulas. Coolest professor ever.
Easy class, if you put a little bit of work in. Even easier if you have any sort of programming knowledge.
Funny, really helpful
very good teacher

I enjoyed the course.
Excellent teacher whose sarcasm is well timed and great.
Professor Bala was great. A natural at explaining Physics.
Excellent professor, can teach a very complex concepts very clearly.
Very helpful, good lecture notes, I learn a lot from this class.
Professor Bala is the BEST! Class is fun, a great teacher for this course.
Good Class.
Great teacher, actually keeps you awake in class. The workload is not bad, but there are a good amount of group projects, none that really require that much work. Overall very chill guy who also knows his stuff very well.
Bala is a great guy and an okay professor. He makes a lot of jokes which can be funny if you realize he's joking. He gives frequent quizzes, but don't worry because you'll probably get to reference your notes.
He is the BEST
Lots of work, but experience, excellent teacher.
He is so nice and good at teaching. Although, the beginning of his class is boring since it is the fault of the book. You will have lots of fun in the rest of the year. Get ready to go to every class because he is giving quiz each class. But, if you miss, he will give you another chance if you have a good attitude and sent email about why you missd
Bala is interesting but doesn't seem to plan his lessons very well. He generally stands up and talks for the duration of the class instead of letting us do our own thing in an engineering class.
good teaching methods. Teach many concept in little time.
He is one of the Best!
Good Physics Teacher at NU
Excellent Teacher.
Bala is easily the best professor I've had and that's even considering I sat in his class for 3.5 hours in a row twice a week for the honors "cornerstone" course. He is extremely helpful and gives us plenty of interesting group projects to work on. Previous experience with the programs used is not necessary but helped me tremendously.
Excellent Problem Solving Class.
Professor was very good.
I like the course and the professor.
He is a fun and quirky professor, but I wouldn't say he was a great teacher. I had programming experience coming into Honors Cornerstone 1 and 2 (combined), and I am so glad that I did because I don't know if I would be able to learn C++ from him. He also messes up a lot and other students that know more than him have to correct him.
Avoid him if you can. Lectures suck, don't prepare students for the homework. Homework assignments take hours and are assigned 2-3 at a time, their due dates change without notice (check online). Bala doesn't possess the skill necessary to teach the course. Will say "this one" and point at nothing, it's impossible to know what he's talking about.
Bala is funny and lowkey thicc af. Its better to come into this course (GE1501/1502) with a little background knowledge of at least one of the four topics you cover in cornerstone (matlab, c++, Arduino/breadboarding, autocad/solidworks). Class is chill but he pop quizzes a lot to promote attendance. Homework (2-3 hrs/week) is easier in groups
Bala does not teach the coding, which is a big part of the class - you either come in knowing it or have to learn on your own by doing the homework. There are many pop quizzes, especially at the beginning. Checking homework with friends is allowed and a good idea. Learned a lot of new skills. A good group for the group project is vital to success.
Amazing professor, very caring and always willing to help students, but what you put in is what you get out. Highly recommend
Bala is a really great and funny guy, but ok as a professor. He'll only go over homework after you've struggled to do it (ton of hw), and half the class time is useless. His restrictions for picking final projects about "energy innovation" I feel are just so he can publish another freshman paper with his name on it. Wish I was in the other class :(
Bala is a great professor who really does care about his students. I was in his combined cornerstone one and two class, and although he gives a lot of homework, you can get it done if you spread it out over the week. He likes to make jokes and they might be corny but they're pretty good. Just go to class and do the homework and you'll be fine.
Bala is a true homie. Bala is one of the nicest professors, and although you don't learn a lot about the different programs that are used, you'll learn a lot about team-oriented projects, so choose your teammates wisely. I took stacker cornerstone, and the way the class is strcutured doesn't allow for a lot of depth in material.
Bala is super nice and has some good jokes lol. I took stacked cornerstone with him. He gives lots of homework assignments but compared to other cornerstone profs you have it easy w him. Get a good group for the final project and not people that don't do any work, aka, most of the people in your class. Do your work, go to class, youll get an A
A lot of group work in that class. In the beginning of the semester, he just sits there and let you talk to each other. So, if you are not very social, it is a nightmare. His teaching is very bad. Poor coding habits and can be very unclear at times. But he does not assign AS much work compare to other stacked cornerstones.
Bala is a nice and is friendly enough to make small talk with students. I took stacked cornerstone and had sooo much hw at the start. If you don't have background in coding, you will need to ask for help for hw. If I didn't make friends in the class, I wouldn't have passed. I don't think Bala is the best professor; his lectures are hard to follow
Had Bala for 1501/1502. He seemed like a very sweet guy and liked to make small talk. Homework was pretty loaded if you take stacked cornerstone, and coding experience definitely is needed. Would not recommend the class if you aren't sociable. Most of the work is done in groups.
By far most relaxed of the Stacked Cornerstone teachers. Lots of hands-on and practical group work, but if you stay on top of things, it's cool how much you do. Poor quiz writing&confusing coder, but he grades very leniently & not very difficult content. He sends projects go to big competitions & journals so you might be published
I liked the class. Quizzes and homework are easy. 10/10!
Bala is not a good cornerstone professor if you actually want to learn anything about engineering. His course is very easy in comparison to the other cornerstone classes, however you will learn nothing as a result of this. His lectures are practically useless and 90% of them have been a complete waste of time.
Bala is an awesome prof. He lets you choose what your project is and at what pace you want to work on it. Very laid back class.
Bala is the GOAT. Easily the best first year engineering teacher. His jokes can be corny but he's genuinely the most caring person and that's why everyone loves him. He's an extremely talented and decorated teacher and engineer. Although there is a lot of group and homework, this class is amazing and has taught me so much. S/o bala!
Relatively easy GE1501/1502 class. Lots of group projects, but enough class time is given for them not to be a huge burden. Quizzes and tests were relatively easy. Generous with grading assignments and tends to grade on the process, not necessarily the product.
Took stacked cornerstone with him, workload was heavy at first, but it lessened out as the year progressed. The lectures at the beginning are somewhat dense. If you don't have a solid programming background, you may struggle a bit, but overall is a great teacher. The TA for my class was amazing, which helped as well.
Took stacked cornerstone with Bala. There are a lot of assignments at the beginning, but it's manageable if you stay on top of it. You definitely need some coding background. Bala is very caring and motivational. He really encourages you to live up to your full potential. Make friends so you have group members for projects.
took him for stacked cornerstone. he often makes mistakes and his quizzes are scuffed (tho this makes them easier). otherwise, he's extremely nice and forgiving. group projects are relatively easy and often enjoyable with other students. hw is easy (esp. with earlier programming experience) but also tedious—just make sure to stay on top of things.
Took him for double cornerstone. Pretty funny guy, you can just do homework during his optional lectures. Homework is straightforward and easy. Group projects are fun and not graded strictly. You will basically get 100% on everything. Note: Take double cornerstone if you can! It's 8 credits of class for something that takes 4 credits of time.
