Good guy. Hard to understand but if you go to office hours very helpful. Tests are all modified HW problems so if you do the HW you will do good on the tests. Midterm not too bad.
His astronomy class was a big yawn. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't put enthusiam in his lectures.
This guy sucks! I would study for the tests from notes and they were NOTHING like the notes. He is really hard to understand and makes you fall asleep in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
So Boring. I couldnt understand a thing he said and his tests were super hard. Try wallingford for astronomy
knows his stuff! very interesting, and gets directly to the point. offers a lot of help too.
He was a horrible teacher, less than half the class passed the midterm. what he said in class had nothing to do with the tests. Save yourself don't take him.
Very boring and hard to follow- he almost never smiles. He isn't very encouraging one on one, especially if you're struggling with the concepts.
Nice guy, gives boring lectures, but the subject matter was interesting enough to keep me awake. The homework and the test are on scantrons, but both of them are rather challenging.
Fell asleep in every class. Talks low and with an accent, can't hear him unless you sit right next to him. Monotone. For such a difficult subject, need someone more exciting and encouraging.Haven't found one good phys teach at MP and I've taken them all!!
You just have to study and be ready for his tests. They're not difficult if you've read the material. I thought his accent was funny and his deadpan jokes were so out there, I started writing them down. He offered lots of extra credit opportunities.
Hardest class I ever have! This class stop me from a 4.0 GPA.
This guy gave hard tests and hard lectures. He kept criticizing me when i didnt understand things outside class. Besides that, his lectures were specifically VAGUE in describing the topic at hand. DONT TAKE HIM!
Difficult class, so I can't blame him for that, but he was, at times, difficult to understand.
The hardest professor I have taken @ MC. Unless you are fascinated by physics, you will probably find his lectures super boring. Collects HW & no partial credit. You either have the right answer or you get nothing. Tests are straight out of the HW, with slight modifications. Midterm was impossible!!
He is a perfect gentleman and a very smart man. My GPA was a 4.0 too before he gave me a B. But, it was my fault. He is hard, but so is the subject. Don't expect to be handed things on a silver platter when you are taking calculus based Physics
His explanation is very organized and clear. His demonstration of certain experiments in the class was helpful and interesting to me. I liked his deep jokes, too. Also, he is always willing to explain to you whenever you visit his office with questions. He is a wonderful teacher to learn physics.
You'll get screwed by the midterm, about 70% of the class failed it, average grade was 44%, about. Don't take him, go straight to 20A, jus that midterm is the problem. Pretty good teacher but did prepare the class for the midterm (Final is same type of test) AT ALL_
Don't take this teacher. He will drop your Gpa for sure, his quiz's are farely easy but the midterm and final are hell.Beware of Becht
VISIT HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS. He's always there, and will sometimes practically do the homework problems for you, especially if you have them completely done before you come to see him. If you know the homework problems, you'll get full credit on the quizes. Expect to fail the midterm - you will.
hardest class ever!! very hard to understand but very smart.
Very good teacher, but very hard. It is possible to get an A, just go to him for help during office hours. Lectures are long and usually boring, but you learn a ton. I thought the quizzes were easier than the homework.
The class itself is probably the hardest one I have ever taken. However, Professor Becht is always willing to help. He is always there during office hours and will go over as many problems as you want. The best way to study for quizzes is to make sure you can do all the homework problems and lecture problems without looking at notes.
VERY difficult class, and a definate GPA dropper. THe teacher is very smart, almost seems at times that he is trying to prove how smart he is by making impossible questions on tests. If you take this class, my suggestion would be to get to know him personally and MAKE him help you, or you will fall behind.
He is the best prof I've ever had. Because of him I became intersted in physics and engineering. I have BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, and I'm working on my PhD. It is all because of you Mr. Becht. I wish you the best.
Nice man, but not so great at teaching on account of his heavy hungarian accent. Lab is harder than the class; plan on several all nighters for an A. Tests "quizzes" are impossible to ace.
Very unclear, at times. Just buy the study guide and memorize the questions to pass. Very frustrating trying to get help from him.
Funny Guy. Always willing to help. Lab class was easy if you did your work.
Very hard class and he is not helpful at all. To get a C you have to dedicate your whole week to reading the book. Doesn't let you make up any work. I do not suggest this class at all.
I enjoyed the class. Takes some effort, but he is very helpful, you just have to go to his office and he will explain everything. The key is to keep up and you will do fine. Would definitely take his class again
This online class was very difficult. What was difficult is that we were tested on items that were not even discussed in the book. Some of the questions came from chapters that we were not being tested on. The time you are given to take the tests is very limited. You may not make up a test. As a student I felt the professor wanted us to fail.
Overall he's an excellent teacher, but the class is difficult, and his exams are too. He expects homework completed for each chapter, and it is part of your grade. However, if you have the perseverance and such to visit his office he is extremely helpful. I'd recommend him but just remember getting an A or B isn't "easy."
It is unfair to rate a teacher low just because students get bad grade. His tests are hard, but it's simply because this subject is hard. He doesn't on purpose to make a hard time for students. Go to his office for help, he is always there.
Although the actual content is very interesting, his tests and quizzes sometimes have questions that don't seem to be in the book, making it hard to get a good grade on his exams. However, he gives out a lot of extra credit quizzes and bonus points which in the end helps out a lot and makes an A or B possible as long as you read the book.
This man knows his physics. hes willing to explain everything and will go over homework. wont accept homework if your 5 mins late though....GO TO HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS!!!! and you wont have any trouble.
If you have the slightest case of ADD his class will be tough. He speaks very softly and monotone and he is not very animated. For this i cannot say he is a "good teacher", but he is a nice guy does want you to succeed and is always willing to help. Go to him during office hours, he is good at explaining things 1 on 1.
Becht is a great teacher but boring at times. He really wants you to do well and is usually in his office to help with homework, etc. Expect to spend 4-8 hours on homework. Homework, sadly, only accounts for 10% of your grade and the other 90% is based on your test scores. Tests are hard so use the online multiple choice aid and review hw.
People have to understand that physics is very hard and so is teaching it. True this teacher is monotone but he is always willing to help and wants you to succeed. Take physics at your own risk, the teacher is the least of your worrries.
I took online class. Hardest class ever. He was too stingy about the timing for the quizzes and exams. He would expect the class to study ever nook and corner of the text. It seemed like he doesn't want any A's in his class.
lame jokes. read text, the material is very stressing to learn. and if your and arrogant physics students (like all the guys i know) and you don't study, you'll fail. he doesnt like A's. Half the class failed each test. he'll randomly hate you and criticize you even if youre an A student. but i ended up liking physics a lot.
EXTREMELY hard. Most students fail his test. There are more C's and B's than A's. The key to passing (and getting an "A") is to do the homework 100% (they are graded) and to study the multiple choice questions online. The tests are extremely HARD!! 2-3 homework-style questions + multiple choice (online-style). Lecture=monotone+boring. I got a "B"
He is boring and monotone. His lectures are useless; homework is hard and worth next to nothing. I would recommend a better teacher like Wallingford/Meyer but you dont have a choice. The test are very B able if you try on the 3 problems and do well on the multiple choice, MC is the hard part. For some reason Becht thinks everyone is a physics major
Very Clear and very helpful. Always available for office hours and willing to help on HW questions. You can check your answers prior to turning in HW so there is no reason not to get 100%. Tests are fair and if you know the material they are very easy. This is the hardest class at MC, but I did not think it was that hard.
Keep up, best thing someone can tell you. Once you get behind in the material its hard to pass. The tests are complex. He chooses two problems from the hw but changes some and the last problem sometimes you derive equations or another problem. The multiple choice is hard if you at least attempt the problems he will give you partial credit.
Honestly, this class could be a whole lot easier if he didn't make the concepts so much harder than they should be. Overall, hes boring and monotonous and this class is super hard because of him. I hope he realizes this. Labs are fun though.
Took online- EXTREMELY difficult. Got an A, but not easily- final is unbelievably difficult to complete in the amount of time given; tests are brutal, and unless you've looked over the material before the test AND have the book right next to you, you're screwed. Test questions are ambiguous and often inconsistent with the text. Do not recommend.
This man knows physics. I've never worked as hard as I did for a B and I've certainly never been as sure knowledge of a class' material as I am now. The key? Stop by his office hours--with questions! He's ready to talk if you're ready to ask and listen. That said, he'll challenge the living daylights out of you. No cheatsheets!
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Though this was an online class, extremely hard and the test questions did not correlate to the text used. I ended up dropping the class after the 2nd week. Would not recommend.
The test question have mistakes and unless you ask the teacher to correct it with info you have to provide he will leave your grade the way it was. He is a real JERK And not helpful at all.
Horrible teacher. The tests are way to detailed and he is VERY mono-toned and boring. I would highly recommend you to NOT take this class. It is as if he gets a kick out of people failing. If you are in his class though, read the study guide and take the quizzes. Yikes, what a bad teacher who is just such a jerk.
Super smart guy, knows his stuff, and I always found him to be friendly and helpful. Crack the book open once in a while, take the practice tests he gives you, and maybe check out the web material and this class is an easy A. He's also available for help during office hours. This is college... act like it and this course will be no problem.
Professor Becht is not as CRAZY HARD as his reputation preceeds. Yes, tests are stressful, you don't get much time. But DO the hw, and make a good equation sheet with equations out of the chapters and from the hw problems and it is TOTALLY possible to get a B. A's are impossible unless you are a genius and GET physics :D good luck!
He is a nice guy, but his "Inroduction to Astonomy" is far from a 101 course. Unless you have a stong astomy background, DON"T take this course. Even students with 4.0+ failed this course and 1/2 the class dropped before the midterms.
SO HARD... i definitely thought this would be a class i could succeed in but it wasn't... i studied and showed up almost every time but he was difficult to pay attention to and his tests were the hardest tests i've ever taken.
I took his online course for Astro M01. His tests, which are every week, are hard and at least 50 questions, and you're only given 50 min. to complete them. He doesn't clarify when things are due (had a test over spring break he didn't tell us about) and doesn't outline the class very well. Avoid this "professor" if you're looking for an A.
Extremely hard class, but Becht is an excellent professor. Has an awesome understanding of the subject. That said, his test are difficult. He will say himself that earning a B is an honor in this class.
If you value your GPA at all, avoid this teacher. His test are very difficult, and seem to be unrelated to the text. Worst of all, he does not clarify on anything, and is very unforgiving. He doesn't allow extra credit or make-up tests for any reason. I enjoy astronomy a lot, but he managed to make the subject painful. Again, avoid him.
If you are taking the online course, YOU DO NOT NEED to buy the book. The entire book is online, and I think it was sneaky that he told me to be sure to buy the book right away. He makes no mention of the free ebook. This teacher does not interact with you online. You are on your own.
I took his online Astronomy class and found that he is a very generous grader. This subject is extremely hard for me and even though my points added up to a C+, he rounded up and gave me a B. BTW, test Q's are straight from book AND if you take a class online...who doesn't have the book open during a test?
Do not take this course. tests are impossible and are timed. I typically get As in every class and im struggling. :( DO NOT even attempt this class, I thought it would be easy but i was sooooo wrong BEWARE
In his astronomy online class, as others have said DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR AN EASY A. Difficult material and impossible to comprehend everything that is asked on the timed tests. Doesnt seem to even go by the material in the book.
Tough class, but certainly doable. If you have any trouble with the material, you can always ask him in his office hours, and he can help you. He gives very generous partial credit. The final was extremely hard, but am pretty sure he curved it. Overall, I thought he was an excellent teacher, and you will understand physics leaving the class.
This class is intense. If you want to do well you need to study every day and make sure you understand every single problem he has ever done forwards and backwards. Calculus skills come in very handy.
hard class, but he's a good teacher. he's willing toexplain everything over and over until you get it. keys to passing this class: make sure you understand every HW assignment and go to his office hours. i got an A and this was my 1st physics course ever
The class is tough and he can be hard on you but as long as you do the homework and understand the material very well you should be fine. The tests are not easy since there's only 4 problems and he gives you 55 minutes to do it but gives very generous partial credit.
I took his online course. Got a B, but it was more difficult than I had anticipated. He's a very clear teacher and is willing to explain any concerns that you may have. Hit the books hard, go to his office, and you'll do fine.
He is an excellent professor. Everything he explains is clear and concise. You will need to invest a substantial amount of time, however. None of the homework assignments took me less than 5 hours. You will learn a lot of physics!
HORRIBLE teacher! Does not teach concepts at all, he just gives you formulas and expects you to know how to use them during the tests and homework. Extremely boring and monotone. Do not take his class!
I've never come across such a terrible teacher in my life. I did everything I could for that class- practiced problems over and over everyday, completed all my homework, attended every lecture, and went to his office for help. I still failed. Take the class somewhere else to get better help since it's a tough class!
Compared to other Moorpark profs, Professor Becht is a hardass in all the best ways. His labs are a huge time investment and he pulls no punches with the homework. Many of the problems he assigns teach you to use principles that you will be using in upper-div classes. He's good preparation for a real college if you are transfering. Also he's funny.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Professor Becht does not explain the material well, he speaks too quietly to hear even when you're in the front row, and his homework has nothing to do with the material taught in class. Test questions are from the homework, so if you're good at teaching yourself intensive subjects and study you'll pass.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! Most boring lecture and hardest tests and quizzes. I took the effort to write this review to warn everybody to not take his class. You will put in an unbelievable amount of work for a passing grade. If you don't have high intellect in science then it will be nearly impossible to get a decent grade in his class.
I took the online astronomy M01 class last semester (Spring 2013). It was pretty hard, but I learned a lot about astronomy. Also, i found the teacher to be very helpful when I had questions about tests/assignments. Overall, a positive experience for sure.
Good class and lectures. But if you want A in the class you have to put in quite bit of time outside class doing the homework he gives you. Pretty though quiz and tests
If you have a natural talent for physics or need this physics for your future, this is the perfect teacher to take. He is EXTREMELY tough but he loves physics and you can tell from his lectures. He is very fair but by the end of the class very few were left and even some of them were struggling to get a passing grade.
Becht is the worst professor I have ever had. Does not explain concepts, only derives equations. Chapter test every week. Formula sheets are terrible, half the formulas you need are not given and need to be derived. Chooses most difficult end of chapter questions for tests which require formulas that where never explained. Would give 0/5 if i could
DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR!!! Lectures do not cover everything in the homework. He leaves you to derive everything you need for the tests and does not actually explain anything. He is a terrible instructor!
Professor Becht is HILARIOUS. He's a genuine guy, and although he speaks quietly, he's very friendly and understanding. Took him for physics lab, and the entire course was very enjoyable. He's full of humor and a great teacher overall. Each week we had one lab assignment and there was only one easy test at the end of the course. Highly recommend.
Weekly test , partial credit, eloquent speaker but not easy for most people to follow because he's quiet and methodical. Very kind, brutal final. He loves capacitors too, so be ready for all of those questions. You'll be tested on the tough stuff, &he only provides the bare minimum equations . he's very much a "real" university professor
Professor Becht is great. He is quiet and reserved. If you take his lab course, get used to propagating uncertainties. My math skills were a bit rusty going in, and I wasn't used to taking partial derivatives, but you get used to it. Grade consists of lab sand final exam. No make up labs, but the lowest score is dropped. Late grading is generous.
Great guy, and he has a great sense of humor. Labs are very straightforward, and hes very generous with grading. Would definitely take again.
Very interesting class. if you dont show up your grade will drop. Lab reports are easy just follow his format. Lab write ups are over easy but do take time
Took his lab and I really liked him. I learned a lot in his class. Attendance is required. Grades labs easy. He has no office hours but responses to emails quickly if you need help. If you are unsure if a problem was done correctly or not, I suggest emailing him a photo of it before turning the report in and he will check if it's correct or not.
He talks so much... Imagine taking two lectures. Dont take for lab, you won't understand the lectures anyways. Grades super hard, gives you a B on every lab report no matter what. Takes the entire three hours so prepare to stay late, even if you finish early he expects you to start the lab report in class...
Becht taught the lab fairly well. His lectures would last for about an hour-ish but they are pretty boring tbh. There are two formal reports, an easy final, and the rest are fairly easy labs. He is very good at getting back to you through email so just email him if you need anything. It is a pretty easy A tho, just show up and ask questions.
