Very good professor! Makes biology easy to understand and fun! Very funny guy! Recommended!
Very good bio teacher. His lectures are straight forward and useful for the midterms. Very reasonable when it comes to grades and wants everyone to pass.
baldo gives great lectures that really keep students entertained.
awesome bio professor. I think he should consider replacing some of the bio professors and teach the bio series instead. This guy really could teach and lays out the materials he expects from his students.
This teacher uses metaphors as examples to explain biology material. He pokes fun at the students to make learning fun. Great teacher.
Very funny bio professor. Lectures are easy to understand and exams are okay as long as you study and review your notes. I enjoyed this class!
Very cool teacher. Makes the material fun.
an excellent professor. learned a lot in his class. exams were not hard as as long as you do the HW assigned.
He is the best bio teacher one could ever have. He made class very interesting and worthwhile. I was always looking forward to go to class. He is awesome and has a great sense of humor.
This teacher THINKS he is hilarious. But his jokes get old. Nonetheless, his analogies are helpful and he's a good lecturer. Be careful on the exams- he's one for details.
hmm this guy seems easy and fun, but ends up being like the rest. Tries really hard to help you, but looks kinda intimidating. Not as easy as I thought it would be.
Baldo is awesome. This class is easy. Go to lecture, review your notes, and you should get an A.
Excellent prof...makes the material easy to understand. Tests are just like his homework and notes. Go to class, take notes, do the homework, and then review your notes and homework...easy A on the tests.
Baldo is the coolest! He takes you out to drink at the end of the quarter. How many of your professors do that? The class was hard but fun, we got to color pictures and talk about sex.
Baldo is awsome. He's really into what he teaches so even if it's not your thing, he makes it fun. He shows up to every lab to help, even though he doesn't have to and takes the class to the tide pools for some actual field IDing. He gets to know everyone in the class which is impressive and rare. He's just an overall cool guy.

seriously the funniest guy ever to watch in lecture. material was very easy and the tests were simple as well as you went to lecture/did the HW. very easy going. this class was very early in the morning and i did not need coffee because he was such a character that he woke me up every morning.
His syllabus shows no grade breakdown so I had to repeatedly ask him what midterms etc were worth. Changes his mind too much on when exams/trips should be. His class was fun. He talks too fast and stands in front of the board when you're trying to copy stuff. He labels stuff and doesnt say what it does. my friends got C's and I got B-. study hard
He is SO awesome! He is very enthusiastic and loves what he does, his class is hard though, but he makes it easy to take! He expectes alot on the midterms!! He is all around great teacher, knows his stuff!!
Fun, very interested in his material. Cracks jokes, keeps people interested!
A great prof for Bio 20C, Summer. His lectures are pretty straight forward, talks really fast. Mixed in a lot of jokes and humor. He interacts with the class a lot; he's really open to questions and his hw is good indication for the exams. 2 MTs, pretty long, short answer (tho he uses MC for big classes). ~60% = passing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Professor has very difficult time using the phrase "I don't know" and would rather make-up answers instead of admitting a gap in his knowledge (very few animals go through menopause). Bring your textbook and underline every sentence he writes on the board. Smart and nice, good examples, but his ego trips him up and he loves the sound of his voice.
he's a great teacher, you need to really study his notes because he's thorough adn the tests are pretty long, but as long as you read his notes and the book, but really listen in class, then you should be fine. LISTEN in class because everything he says is on the test. not everything in the book is on the test.
He's pretty much a jerk. Doesn't seem to hold much interest in your academic success at all--he knows you know this, and doesn't seem to mind at all. I tried asking him a question after class and it was pretty obvious he didn't know the answer, so he bullsh*tted me then gave me the brush off. You are really developing the biologist in me, Baldo!
Tests not based on lectures. Expects way too much from an intro bio course. Interesting lectures.
real easy class, dont take it unless ur placed into it tho! baldo is chill and doesnt expect specific detailed analysis of basic biology, he skims the surface of basic material (dont overly study, ull just be pissed after taking a simple test)--the hw was total bs, the TAs want more indetailed answers than what Baldo gives (got to lecture!!)
Very funny teacher, I found that his humor helped the concepts stick. Lecture attendance is a must, as tests & hw are solely based on these. I never opened my textbook the entire quarter, and I'm doing pretty well in the class. Highly recommended!
very clear on his test material, wants students to understand everything. he does, however, have trouble admitting his mistakes which could get confusing at times.
Great at explaining concepts. Uses good examples that make the material covered easy to remember. Lectures based on the Freeman text but we were assigned the Brooker text... Make sure you go to class, not everything is in the book. Tests are mainly definitions with little room for variability(keyword based). Would definitely take again. KOBE 4tw!
Baldo is an awesome teacher, a lot of fun & Inverts is a great class. You need to go to lecture & lab, plus study & do the work to pass. Allison Gong is the hands-down best TA. Everyone I know loved this class.
want an A? don't take this class unless you are good at listening to details and taking multiple choice tests.
Friendly professor, very difficult tests. Expects a ton of detail in short answer questions. Talks a bit too fast so you can't write everything down and he doesn't put it all on the board. Has a tendency to block the board so can't see what he has written. Hardest Bio class I've taken. Learned a lot, but make sure class is for you before signing up
He is not a good professor at all! I expect more from him since he's teaching at a UC campus. He's test are easy yet confusing! It's always a 50 question muliple choice test & he always makes a mistake in writing them. He makes no sense at all. I did not enjoy the class. It was a waste of time. He needs to be a better professor & make better exams!
This class was an easy A! However, Baldo was not always as clear as he should have been on exams. Somehow about half the class failed the first exam??? (I got a B without studying) He ended up "curving" the class. He assigns mandatory homework and I would recommend going to lecture. Section wasn't mandatory unless you failed the 1st exam.
Tests are straight foward and he's clear on what it covers. Just read the book, even though it's a pain when you have to filter out what he's going to test you on. It's an intro class so it's really really basic. You can't just rely on the notes he gives, you have to look it up in the book! I recommend this class- easy A for bio majors.
Baldo is awesome. very approachable and takes time to answer questions after class. It was an intro class, so it was pretty easy. The book is optional, but read it after lecture so you know what to focus on. I got a 94% on all 4 Tests. They are easy but multiple guess so he will try to get you with tricky questions. class very entertaining so go
Baldo is pleasant, funny, and approachable. I've never seen him mad. However, he's not that great of a teacher, the TA's did a better job of clarifying the material. You have to pass 3 of the 4 tests in order to pass the class, and I thought I did, but I still got a D in the class. The tests were confusing. Homework was tedious.
I had him for the summer for 20c. Very clear. I really liked him, but he assumed that everyone took 20a first, so there were a couple of things that got me, but just a few, and it got me ahead in 20a when I took it in the fall.
Baldo is a great professor, very enthusiastic, very informative, and very entertaining. He knows his stuff and how to relate it to people who don't always care. Multiple choice test easy, if confusing. In section quizzes kept you studying and prepared. Great class, hope to take Inverts with him soon.

Cool guy, but the multiple choice tests are so easy its hard, ended up with a B-! Go to class and you won't have to touch your book, and you'll get to hear priceless student questions like, "Why would a species WANT to evolve?"
He's great! even for an 8am class, i had no problem staying awake. he's good at explaining things, and although theres a lot of material and the tests were only ten questions, the average grade was an 89, and he offers 15 points extra credit. Super easy class. go to lecture and you dont need to read.
Not that great of a professor. He goes over what is on the test, end of story. He does the required amount of work and that's it. He is average. The one good quality is that he is easy to talk to. Aside from that he is nothing special. If another teacher taught the class, I would probably take it. He's not horrible, but he's not spectacular either.
Best professor I have had yet. Funny, and truely interested in the subject material. The guy also seems to know everything! However, the tests were very hard. Even though lectures were not required, I don't think its possible to do well in this class without going.
Baldo is great! Hilarious, awesome interesting lectures even if the subject isn't your thing, cares about students, knows everything about invertebrates! Tough class though and he sometimes talks too fast in leactures.
Easy to understand, but you better pay attention if you want to keep up. Keeps class lively with subtle jokes and a distinctive roundabout way of describing simple things. Baldo likes the students, and is easy to approach. He also seems to know almost everything about everything, and is glad to share.
Great teacher! He definitely makes Biology more interesting. It's a lot of memorization, but the class is really fun. I highly recommend it for Bio majors. Great review.
Baldo is amazing! His class was awesome. My only regret was I took it over the summer so I only had 5 weeks with him. Bio 20C was fun anyway but Baldo made it better he was always well prepared and would make subtle jokes throughout class. I thought he was great and if I ever get the chance to take his class again, I would.
Good professor. He made class interesting even though it was an eight am class. Tests were fair, but I don't know about the grading. I emailed about my final grade, he took weeks to reply. Then I asked where to pick it up and if he could please recheck my grade, and he never replied, :o
While Baldo is a nice and fun person, he is not the best teacher. His lectures are not organized in a way that makes note-taking fluid (it jumps around quite a bit). His tests were all short answer and required more time than the period allowed. He never gave any idea how well you did on the tests (just a #, not even showing total possible points).
BORING. The tests were pretty hard and he doesn't let you know what grade you have until you find out on your report card. He curves the final grade like crazy. I failed the MT and got a D on the final and managed to get a B as a final grade. Weird.
Forget the book, go to lecture. Although the information isn't well organized in his lectures, it's your only tool to get a good grade. Don't just study the facts either, make sure you learn the CONCEPTS taught because that is what you are tested on. And I know he's not the best lecturer but the man is hilarious and very nice to look at.
Very good proff. Cracks jokes, lecture is funny and understandable. Attend all lectures cause he bases the tests off solely his notes. Be sure to understand concepts rather than memorizing. He always wears short shorts and a polo. I believe he has a low curve so be sure to do well. Only a midterm and final and two labs.
I loved his class. As long as you go to class and write down everything on his slides you will be fine for the tests. He really knows his stuff and is excited about it. Forget the book i spent $100 and never used it once.
I don't get what everyone is complaining about. Baldo is amazing. Yougo to class at 8am and he tells you about all the awesome things animals do. That's pretty much it. His tests are easy. The questions are pretty much essentials that you need to know if you want to take any upper div EEB class. Go to lecture and you won't need to read the book.
Great teacher! Lectures seemed clear and concise to me, and if you take good notes, you'll do fine. DO NOT bother buying the textbook, you don't need it at all! Just show up to every lecture and you can do fine on the midterm and final (no cummulative final!)
Baldo is a funny guy, definitely enthusiastic about his topic. I always enjoyed the lectures, but his tests are impossible! I'd never had this much trouble with a test before! It's all memorization, and an incredible amount of content to remember with no guidelines. Don't take this class unless you have to. It's a GPA lower-er.
Easy class if you attend lectures and make sure you understand material.. easy and fun actually. professor was great!!
EASY class if you attend lectures, pay attention in them and make sure you understand material. TAs are very helpful too. great professor. and class isnt hard at all.
He might be a great researcher. No doubt, but as a professor he is just ok. In a big topic such as a ecology and evolution you should have more than 2 tests. Also the guys is all over the place and bot very clear.I don't know if he reads this but he should consider to make more tests on his bio 20 c!
Baldo knows the class topics inside and out. He explains things very clearly and is enthusiastic about teaching. The class is mostly memorization (and lots of it), and tests can get pretty darn detailed, but if you go to lecture, he will tell you everything you need to know for the exams. The book for this course isn't really needed.
Pretty much just go to class and take notes, he can be entertaining sometimes. If you go to section and do the worksheets you'll do well on the tests which are pretty much all short answers. There are plenty of extra credit questions as well.
Amazing and enthusiastic professor. You will love inverts. It's not an easy subject but he is very helpful and his tests are straight forward and clear. He is always willing to answer any question and loves people to come to office hours. The book is a great extra resource. You need to come to class!
Attending lecture despite its 8am time is absolutely necessary. There are only two excessively detailed tests, so your performance on both is vital. It's an interesting class and professor, but don't believe it's an easy A---it isn't. It is an easy C.
Baldo was an AMAZING teacher. The class is NOT easy, but I'm not paying UCSC tuition to NOT learn. Tests are HARD, you MUST study and prepare for them, but if you do, the questions won't come as a surprise. Best class I've taken in the BIO department.
He's one of the best professors to go to lecture for... he's hilarious and very informative. His exams are pretty rigorous but with networking and studying old exams of his you should do well. He's a great guy but the class material is a bit dry, in my opinion.
I took this class to satisfy an outside course for Psychology. If you are thinking of doing the same, DON'T. This professor is EXTREMELY smart and knows his stuff, but unless you love the topic or biology in general, it's near impossible to do well. It's 100% necessary to go to every single lecture. His exams are insane, but I'm not a bio major.
Baldo is a pretty good professor. I hear this class is easy for people who are used to the Bio workload, but I felt this class was overly demanding but you wouldn't know it until after the midterm. The tests are so detailed that you need to go everyday and memorize everything he says. Interesting subject but what you need to memorize is unnecessary
Great professor! He knows his stuff. I would definitely recommend taking a course taught by him. Just remember to attend EVERY lecture, and complete the synk pages at the end of each week.
He is really knowledgeable professor, but gives difficult tests. You must go to class to get his notes. Memorize/know/understand all of his notes for his tests. Even practice writing out the concepts and understand how to interpret the information. His tests are all written, so be super prepared to analyze/interpret/define everything.
If you find EEB fascinating, be prepared to be disappointed. For such a rich and complex subject, he made it pretty simplistic and uninteresting. For the tests, memorize his narrow definitions instead of understanding the material. Do not pretend like you know what ecology and evolution are about if your only academic exposure is this course.
Baldo's tests test if you can apply ideas to graphs. He doesn't post practice exams, so you wont be able to properly prepare until after your first midterm. The next test is the final. Write down all the power points, oral explanations he gives, and all the examples. Go through the textbook figures and the SYNK pages he posts on his website.
Overall a pretty cool professor, just attend class, take good notes, study a little every week to ace your section quizzes, and make sure you fully understand your notes before the midterm and final. He tests more on concepts than rote memorization, make sure you can analyze graphs and data too. Don't buy the book, he only tests on his notes.
I got an A-. Not a difficult class. Go to lecture or at least try to get notes from a friend bc he doesn't put them online. Pay attention to the examples he has in his slides!! Marinovic, however, I really did not like. He reminds me of a jock whose glory days were high school so he never really grew up. Thank god I have him only for one course.
super nice and funny professor. He makes everything so simple. Tests are purposefully written harder. SO STUDY! sections mandatory.
Interesting material, good at presenting it clearly. Very enthusiastic and makes attending lecture fun. Don't use the book, all test material is taken from lectures. The material seems easy, but be warned, his tests are all short answer and are quite hard so make sure you understand the concepts not just memorize definitions.
There is 1 midterm and 1 final, quiz each week. Don't wait until the last day to study! After each week go over SYNK pages thoroughly. Take good lecture notes and SYNK notes (save them and study them for the midterm and final) Two exams are not cumulative. This is NOT an easy class. He curves like crazy though :)
AWESOME professor. Know his material. Lovely sense of humor. Very helpful. Just read his notes and you'll be fine. The exams are from his slides. Good professor overall.
Amazing class! take it! it is so easy. he curves a lot and yes the evolution part is a bit challenging but the ecology is way easy. i studied the night before the midterm for ecology and got an A oh and no accumulative final
Baldo is a funny guy and his lectures are quite interesting. He tries to make the class fun with cracking jokes. But there is A LOT of material. It's not an easy class and I recommend studying his lecture notes everyday. Memorize all the terms. The midterm was tough but he curves it. The final grade is curved as well.
Great professor, and funny. I found his midterm hard because it was based on concepts and not just memorization, but if your TA is decent hopefully he can help. My TA had a thick accent so he was no use...study the slides as much as possible and take good notes on his lectures!
Baldo Marinovic is one of the best lecturers at UCSC. His class is an absolute joy! He is a very kind, funny, intelligent individual. Very passionate about the subject and about students understanding. Although some complain about his tests they are actually really easy if you just study his notes. No textbooks
One of the best lectures I've been to at UCSC. His tests are concepts so don't try to memorize the terms. Pay attention in lecture cause he gives examples. He curves ALOT (i wish he didn't though). 72 was average, 55 passing.
Baldo is very entertaining, and was a great delight to have as a professor. To get an A you need to go to class. Also, getting your hands on multiple past exams really helps. He purposely makes the current test different than the previous quarter so getting two quarters prior would help more, but the more tests the better. He's great though!:)
Loved this class. Baldo is probably one of the most clear, entertaining, awesome lecturers I've ever had. I loved his teaching style, very straightforward. Go to lecture and you'll do great. He gives review sheets for his midterms that have EVERYTHING you need to know on them, doesn't throw any surprises into the test. GREAT teacher!
He cares a lot about his students understanding the concepts. For his tests you have to understand the material to get an A or B not just memorize facts. He makes jokes to make lectures more entertaining on the minus side he eats during office hours and explains things with his mouth full. Overall good teacher but not a super easy class.
Baldo was a wonderful professor! He is very helpful and is concerned with his students progress. As long as you have a decent grasp on the material, not just some facts you memorized, getting a good grade in this class is easy.
Great lecturer, but his exams are ridiculous- all of the questions are long prompt & short answer- it is impossible to know whether you have answered the question completely. Impossible to get an A. Don't take his class.
Baldo is my favorite professor. Passing his class with an A- is no joke. I made flashcards for almost every slide and vocab word ever shown in class. But just making the flashcards once really helped me on the exams. They are Short answer and fill in, but also very straight forward. No tricks. Go to him for help if needed. He's really helpful.
Really great professor. Lectures are clear and concise. I highly recommend him.
If you want to do well you have to attend the lectures and take notes. He is very entertaining and gives enjoyable lectures. For the exams, memorize the terms, understand their concepts, and be able to apply them to scenarios.
This was my second class with Baldo, and it was another great experience! Baldo knows so much about inverts and I really enjoyed and learned a lot in this class. Yes, the material is difficult, but Baldo doesn't try and "trick" you on tests. Very helpful, straightforward, entertaining, and knowledgeable professor! Wish he taught more classes!!!
This class was not easy for me, but the material was super interesting. Baldo is a great teacher, but be prepared to study a lot.
Baldo is Baldo. He's fair. Just study lecture notes.
Classes can be a little boring sometime but it's important to know what you're doing. Notes are essential as he doesn't post them online or anything. Attention to detail is needed, tests can be tricky but study hard from past exams and go over terms and history. He's also pretty funny; reminds me of Mermaid Man. Quizzes happen often
Bioe 20c with him is fun, interesting, and easy. No hw or section, he posts old exams online, and everything you need is in the lecture. If you need help, a quick google search will do. The lecture is prepared and includes helpful visuals you can find in the book but you can find similar picture online.
Great teacher who's passionate about the topic and wants his students to succeed. No hw but frequent section quizzes. Tests are all short answer but not long. They aren't impossible but you need to study lecture notes and the format separates the A students from the B and C students. You learn how to study for his tests after the first midterm.
a really great teacher, and lecturer
Easy concepts. I barely studied for the class.
Boldo is awesome, he is truely passionate about the subject and it shows. This class is very demeanding and the lab practicals are brutal. Be prepared to dedicate most of your study time to this class and you will have a great time. Boldo actually comes to all the labs along with your TA, sooo helpful! This is a must take class
The class overall requires a lot of memorization. The tests are pretty difficult and I think that's what killed me and my grade. Although, the professor's very funny.
Baldo is a great professor! Literally memorize and be ready to apply what you learn in class as his tests cover pretty much everything you learned (even the seemingly unimportant points). Take the examples he gives you during class seriously as they can show up on the exams. Do not skip class because lectures aren't posted.
Really solid professor. The only thing I didn't like is that he doesn't post his lectures so it makes you go to class every day which is good I guess. His tests are like worksheets, no multiple choice all short answer written questions but they're really fair if you study. Very fair class don't be afraid to take it with him.
Baldo is awesome. He is funny and conveys material really well. His test aren't easy but if you study for comprehension you will be fine; he asks lots of concept questions. All around awesome professor, inspired me to change majors.
I loved Baldo! He is very devoted to his teaching and gives clear examples for every concept. He is also really funny and helps you remember the material. The tests are pretty tricky , but if you study old exams and know definitions you'll be fine.
He does not post his lecture notes online so you need to go to class to get the information you need for his exams. All the information he gives you, you will be tested on. Take good notes and that will be your textbook. It's a really interesting class and you will get an A if you commit his lectures to memory.
Baldo is crazy in all the best ways and maybe a few of the less-good ways. He's mostly energetic and clear in class; tests are unique and fairly difficult and require thorough studying. He doesn't post lectures online, so missing a lecture can bring you down. The material is mostly really easy. I didn't use a textbook at all.
Go to lecture and study a whole lot before tests and you may get a B. Tests were wordy free response questions. And it usually wasn't clear what they were asking for. Hardest part of this class was figuring out what the professor was thinking while writing his confusing tests.
Baldo is awesome. He is hilarious, inspiratonal and very willing to talk to students. He'said focused on teaching not research. You don't need to read the textbook but he doesnt post lectures online, so u NEED to be in lecture. Flashcards and definitions are best way to study (plus practice exam & quizlet). His exams and grading are very fair
Baldo is hilarious and certainly knows his material. Lectures were both fun and very informative. Textbook readings are nonexistant and there's no homework, but the tests are no joke. Tests are all short answer, and you'll have to basically memorize everything you learn in the class. Sometimes tests are hard to understand so study the practice exam
Took him over summer session and he made those long lectures interesting. Funny and is passionate about his stuff, explains topics thoroughly and easy to follow. He is clear about grading and what will be on quizzes and exams. Exams are both MC and short answer so you need to understand AND memorize. Extra credit points on every exam!
As long as you study a reasonable amount, you'll probably be able to score an A. Baldo's lectures are funny, interesting, and v. focused on real-world applications. Offers plenty of extra credit & help during office hours--in general, a super nice guy who I look forward to taking more classes with!
Baldo is an amazing professor and if I could take every class with him, I would. This class was fantastic and I recommend that everyone take it.
Definitely take Baldo's class if you can, he makes learning really easy and won't trouble you. He makes a lot of Dad jokes and it's very endearing
Look, it's generally pretty hard to engage people in a lecture class, but this man does it really well. He won't give you homework, instead going for the painless weekly quizzes. Even if you do poorly, if you go talk to him he will try to help. He really wants people to understand the material, and will probably make you chuckle at least once.
Make sure to show up to class, because he doesn't post anything online. His tests are a little confusing, but less so if you understand his system. Instead of asking what individual terms mean, he usually gives a complex real-world example and asks a few questions along the lines of "what kind of _____ does this represent?" Definitely a fun class.
His lectures emphasize diagrams and bauplans, but his exams are more key term/concept-focused (which trust me is good news!) Baldo is super available for questions and one of my fave bio professors, knows how to make the info relevant and interesting. Great class, great teacher, and in general a great guy
What a dude. You'll love him.
Don't buy the textbooks. You won't need them. Instead, you must attend the lectures to get the notes. A fair amount of studying is required for the class, but nothing terrible. The hardest part of the class is deciphering we he wants from you on his tests. The wording can be tricky. It's an enjoyable and interesting class, even for a non-bio major
I really liked this class. Baldo is a cool guy and the material you learn from him is awesome. He doesn't assign any homework. You HAVE to go to lecture if you want to get the material, he doesn't post it. His tests are pretty tricky and different than any test I've had. Open answer stuff, but doable. I've learned a lot though and would take again.
I took BIOE20C over the summer in 2016. It was my first college course and I am so glad it was with him. He is extremely knowledgable, kind, and quite funny. He is very clear about his grading style and gets quizzes and tests back in a pinch! He is so friendly and loves to talk about his research. Loved this guy!!
Baldo never makes his courses easy. I've taken BIO 20c and BIO122 the latter of which an intensive weekly four hour lab, however, out of three four hour labs each week, he attended each one and was exceptionally helpful. Bio122 was a hard class with a lot of extra work but boy, does Baldo know how to make it interesting. He really is a gem.
My first UC class as a transfer student. I love ecology and evolution and Baldo's passion and excitement only enhanced mine. He is an incredibly kind teacher and wants everyone to do well. He is great at explaining tricky concepts so they are understandable. He is readily reached by email. I have a lot of love for this teacher!!
Baldo is an amazing professor. His lectures are really straight forward and if you go to MSI, you are bound to do well. Just know his lectures and you will do great and do the practice midterms/final.
This was the best class I've taken at UCSC. Baldo is so upbeat and interesting that you'll want to go to every class and study hard. It is not easy, but it's easy to work hard when your class is this interesting.
If you've got any type of attention deficit medical issues, he is not a professor for you. Information is strictly from lectures. He posts the topics that he talks about online, but the explanations are only given in class. He's a cool professor. Kind and generous to explain anything to you. Tests are heavy memorization & applying them conceptually
He's great and funny. Notes are taken in class only. Midterms/finals are mostly conceptual which I find difficult to do. Studying is your best friend.
Passionate and energized lecturer who is also very good at answering questions. Some sections were held in the greenhouse which was cool! His tests are very difficult and (sort-of) fill in the blank. You will definitely have to put effort into studying the material well and attending lecture in order to pass.
This is the second class I've taken with Baldo and he's a real great professor. He is so attentive to his students and really takes care in their success, even if the class is large. His lectures are really great and informative. He is also present during labs and is so helpful in demonstrating dissection methods and identifying anatomy.
Best teacher I've had so far, his class is amazing, you need to go to every class because he takes attendance and his tests are hard and unlike most you'll take in any other class at UCSC but is a great teacher and it's worth it. Study hard and you'll succeed
Amazing teacher, but the exams are graded harshly. Not only that, but there were ALWAYS grading errors that I had to bring up about my midterm. For the final, we were never able to get them back so I couldn't go over whether there were mistakes on it or not.
he's a great professor, although the class was like 300+ he really cares about the students. One of the best professors I've had!
The tests dont make any sense at all. You basically have to guess what is going to be in the test without any help from neither ta or teacher. The quizzes are five points but are heavily weighted so if you get one wrong have fun with the huge hit. The practice exams dont help at all. Dont take this class if you dont have to.
Baldo is a very good lecturer. He is very entertaining while lecture and has many analogies for the topics. The only problem with the class are the tests. Essentially, you need to be able to memorize key words, and any deviation from those keywords will result in the answer being considered wrong. Essentially, there is a lot of memorization.
Baldo's lectures are funny and interesting. His tests are pretty tough as they're all free response.
His lectures are super entertaining always makes the class laugh. He made me fall in love with evolution, but his tests are tough, all short answer. There's 2 midterms and 1 final (worth 40% of your grade). All in all, it's like one week of stress before the exams, but the rest of the quarter is just lecture.
This professor is really exceptional, explains clearly and knows his material, looked forward to his lectures, all his lectures are very engaging, and all the material you need to learn is clearly written in slides. Great study guides and you really have to study for his tests. He grades relatively hard. This was a moderately difficult class 3.5.
Baldo is awesome. He's super passionate about the material and has really interesting lectures. Tests are difficult (free response, situational questions) so make sure you study but he tells you everything you would need to know. Overall, a great teacher and a great class - I'd definitely recommend him!
Exams are intentionally worded in such an unnecessarily difficult manner. Felt like I was taking an English course because his exam questions require so so much strategy and effort to understand. Nice guy but tough grader and super tough tests. I would reconsider taking this course. Don't take it if you don't have to or unless you want extra stress
you can't just memorize things for this class. I had to apply the concepts I learned so that's why the exams were tough (but doable). I was a bit disappointed that the final was multiple choice instead of short answer (the format shouldn't have changed-it kinda screwed me over). Overall, I enjoyed this class and learned a lot. Would take again!!!
During the majority of the quarter I found him to be a funny lecturer and fairly good at covering a lot of ground, though he isn't the best at differentiating what people need to know and what they don't for tests. Usually theres a good amount of extra credit, though he dropped the extra credit for the final and didn't do anything about it.
Baldo's a cool and funny guy who cares about his students. Everything you learn in this class comes directly from lecture though, and there's no assigned homework, so to do well in the class it's better to study all quarter than cramming last minute AND DONT MISS CLASS. His tests are also harder than necessary since they're free response.
I loved Baldo's class, it was always interesting and he only lectures on what you need to know. His test can be confusing but attending section and OH can definitely help. He does give quite a bit of homework though.
This class was amazing!!! Make sure to attend all lectures, since the tests are straight from them. Also, keep up with all the worksheets/quizzes/self-assessments if you are taking this class remotely. Attend office hours too and Baldo will bless you with dad jokes!
Baldo was a great professor, one of the best I've had. His class is lecture heavy, but the lectures are not at all boring. There is weekly homework and quizzes, but if you attend lecture it should be straightforward. He was very caring and adjusted the grading scale of the midterm when the average was low. He wanted everyone to pass.
What a great professor. He is one of the most genuine people I have met on campus. Grading is very fair. If you work for it, you can get an A. He also weighs worksheets heavily which are pretty easy and you can ask questions so thats a nice cushion. This quarter (bc of online classes) tests were open note. If youre in his class youll love him
Really nice and easy grader. We had no papers, just short quizzes and homework. The midterm and final were really simple and open note. I really recommend going to his office hours, especially before the midterm/final. Make sure you go to class- there are assignments that get unlocked only during the class period. I didn't use the textbook at all.
Baldo is a great lecturer. He uses an 'active learning' style, which means that there are videos to watch before class and during class there are 1-2 quizzes/activities. The midterm and final are hard, more application than memorization but he explains anything you got wrong very well. He also provides extra credit opportunities and practice quizs
Baldo is a great professor, and his lectures were lengthy yet engaging. It's important that you go to lectures because he gives examples that will be used on worksheets and even tests. Some worksheet questions are ambiguous but other than that they're pretty easy. Midterm and final were open note. Pay attention , do the homwwork, and you'll pass!
He is an entertaining lecturer and his class is really easy on the surface. Study for his tests because he does throw a couple of curve balls that can really tank your grade
Came into the class 3 weeks late and still managed to pass with a C because of the curve. Also did not use the text book. Homework and quizzes were fair/easy for the most part. Midterms are open note but have extremely tricky wording that confuses you. Make sure you actually pay attention in lectures.
Baldo is super dope! I looked forward to going to his lectures
Baldo is a great person and you can tell he cares about the material a lot but without a background in ecology or a non-environmental science major this class is quite difficult.
He's good at being a lecturer but most of his assignments (including the final) will have spelling and/or grammatical errors that can make the prompt confusing and you frustrated. The exams were very hard to complete.
He gave good lectures! The tests & quizzes are pretty tough though, he grades harshly. He always tells a dad joke at the end of each lecture, that was definitely the highlight for the class. The TAs for this class are also amazing, they will be your biggest supporters (shout out to Dori). Be ready to pay attention to the lectures and take notes
So I took this course because I wanted to see if biology was a good fit for me. Turns out its not but this class was very enjoyable and I do not regret taking it. I did ok in the class but it was because of Baldos good teaching . His test are somewhat difficult but the lecture notes and worksheets were a useful study tool. The work is manageable!
Baldo does a really good job at creating a fair and easy-to-understand learning environment. The class has one midterm and a final and the rest of your grade is through worksheets and class activities. Section and class are mandatory though but they are not overwhelming. Offers substantial extra credit at end of the quarter. Easy class and great pr
Baldo is amazing. He's really funny and explaining concepts thoroughly. His lectures weren't mandatory but he did have in class activities that counted were counted for a grade. I would recommend still attending lectures bc the lecture slides don't contain all the material you need to know. Also his exams are really challenging but not impossible!
He's really funny and it's clear that he's very passionate about his subject but the tests and worksheets are often worded very weirdly and it can be hard to understand what he's trying to ask you. I probably won't take him again because of that. Cool dude though
I will truly miss Baldo. His lectures were engaging, interesting and he is always cracking jokes. I really like how this class is set up. It's very organized and he is always willing to help you understand something better. When he answers a question, he sort of yells which is as a little scary but I think it's just because he's so passionate.
Baldo is a great professor! His lectures are engaging and fun. The class was pretty test heavy, with both the mid-term and final making up half of the overall grade. My only problem is that the worksheets were confusing on what they were asking. Both the tests and worksheets are in his words, so you have to learn how to read them a certain way.
Baldo is incredibly unprofessional. At office hours, he refused to dismiss another student while I disclosed recent relationship violence/trauma to him in regards to my low midterm score. He not only read aloud all of my grades in front of that other student, but he also demanded that I provide "proof." He never responded to my emails about this^
My favorite class last quarter! Professor Baldo is an amazing teacher, he's very engaging and fun. I learned a lot, but I had to put in some effort outside of class to get a good grade. TA office hours, MSI, and reviewing notes are your best friends. Tests are a bit tough, so be sure you really understand the material. Highly recommend this class!
Be prepared to have a good note-taking strategy for this class (I used docs)! The lectures move very fast, and the information in them will be referenced in weekly quizzes, homework, and exams. I bought a textbook for this class but never used it, so I wouldn't recommend one. The professor is so engaging and witty, so I would recommend him!
Gives amazing lectures! Learned all of the material by just engaging with his lectures and taking notes. Great class!!!
I enjoyed Baldo's class a lot! His lectures were very engaging and I learned a lot from the class. Tests were challenging, but nothing super unexpected. This class went over topics in lectures and then taught how to apply those topics. Overall a very comprehensive intro biology class.
He lectures you the whole time and has no participation.
Baldo is kind and funny, but I personally found his lectures boring and unengaging. This class will slap you in the face if you don't study before the midterm and final, even though it's online! We had weekly worksheets that were impossible to get 100% on and weekly section quizzes that were kinda difficult. Strongly disliked this class, good luck!
Baldo is a funny man, he always ended lectures w/ a dad joke and used jokes to keep us engaged. During lectures, he went through things fast so make sure to pay attention. On the worksheets, it was hard to get full points. Make sure to truly understand concepts. I went to LSS and had a hard time grasping the concepts but I would take Baldo again :)
fun professor, I did the active learning portion of the class which helped me understand the material more yet I somehow was always lost when he talked. the midterm and the final were difficult if you got one part of the question wrong, you get it all wrong. but the worksheets were relatively decent and prepped me for the exams.
Baldo's lectures are interesting and engaging, but his test questions are ambiguous and thus difficult to score well on.
Do not cheat in his class, a group of people cheated on the midterm this quarter, and it has gone terribly for them. Other than that, pay attention, take notes, make sure you study, and you should be good to go. He makes little dad jokes in lecture, and covers the content very clearly. Textbook was not used despite being "required".
My experience in this class was positive. What I liked about this class is that the grading was very clear, and the study materials are all organized well. He explains concepts pretty clearly and is a pretty nice person from what I can tell. There are many small assignments throughout the class but the workload is still pretty light.
I loved Baldo! I am transferring next year and I'm devastated I won't be able to take another class with him. He is hilarious. It is very lecture heavy and the lectures can go on for a long time, so if you struggle sitting and paying attention for that long then I think you could struggle in this class.
a few kids in the class got caught cheating so he punished the whole class instead of just those students and made the whole class retake the midterm with the final .It was so unfair and so stressful for finals week have to study the ecology /and evolution portion of the class
TA's grade harshly. Easy material but was hard for me to sit through lectures as he read off slides. He caught people working together on the online midterm and made us take another midterm and final on the same day & didn't count the 1st midterm, which brought my grade from a 92 to 82 bc I got a good grade on the 1st one. Did allow a cheat sheet.
I really enjoyed Baldo's class! I found his lectures really engaging because of his dad jokes. This class is all conceptual, you learn how to apply these concepts to any given situation. The midterm + final exam was taken online, open book/note. Lecture was not mandatory, but I suggest going, you won't be able to learn from slides alone.
Baldo made lectures so entertaining while also engaging us in the material. His humor, as well as his fashion (polo shirt/khaki shorts) are everything. Has about one worksheet due a week, exams are sometimes trickily worded but he posts past exams for practice. Bro is also kind of a legend in his field and clearly has tons of teaching experience.
baldo is a hilarious professor and lectures are always interesting, but i did find that the questions on both the worksheets and midterm/final were pretty confusingly worded and could be difficult to do well on.
Course was really interesting and lectures were great and thorough. Very charismatic guy. I would recommend attending lectures as they're long and take forever to go through on Yuja. Exams were open note but a bit challenging. Ta's deduct 2 points for every day an assignment is late. I wish I took more outside his class.
TA's grade harshly on worksheets. Exams very hard, 25 minutes for 15 questions that u need to read a paragraph above to answer. Worksheets are very hard, I got docked two points cause I had too many sentences in my answer, there was no sentence limit. Does not review material before exams. I would not take him if you can, seems nice but very harsh.
He's a charismatic guy, his lectures are engaging however it's very test heavy, most of your grade will be based on one midterm and the final. Homework and sometimes test questions were vague, its not always clear what exactly he wants; but TA's grade hard on specifics so its a guessing game as to whether you'll get points docked.
Not much homework, but the tests are awful. Studying/going to lectures will not really help, as every question seems like a trick question. Midterm/final are online/open notes which is good, but the lectures are not very engaging. Weekly homework is graded somewhat tough
His lectures are entertaining and funny, but his questions for worksheets and tests are worded weirdly. Random typos or vague questions.
He is fun to listen to and tests are relatively easy. Sometimes questions are written like riddles with spelling errors, but once I figured out which concept the question was testing us on, I was able to answer most questions correctly. If you attend lectures, you should be fine.
I had Baldo the first quarter of my first year and he introduced me to biology excellently and sparked my interest in environmental sciences. Highly recommend and I hope to take him again.
Lectures were funny and engaging and the exams were easy if you pay even the slightest bit of attention. Material is paced well and easy to understand. An easy A and an interesting class, take this if it's an option.
Baldo's lectures are engaging and humorous, but his tests can be tricky. Use the free textbook, attend study sessions, and try unstuck ai for helpful prep - it'll give you an edge on those specific exam questions.
tests are online which is great. attendance isn't recorded in lecture.
the professor is an awesome guy and the lectures are all well taught. however, when it comes to the tests, good luck. I showed up to every lecture, paid attention, took a lot of notes, and did every worksheet but I ended up doing bad on the midterm/final. They had a lot of select all that apply type questions, and a pretty strict time-limit.
He's a great professor but his online tests are incredibly difficult since he knows people will cheat. He's looking for very specific answers and almost every test question felt like it was meant to trick you. There is no free response which would've made the test easier since his multiple choice is very subjective
Baldo is hilarious and an amazing prof! His lectures are mandatory but recorded. Take lots of notes even when he rambles on, it's important. The worksheets were simple, but go in-depth in your response. The tests were difficult compared to the rest of the course and are 50% of your grade, but online and multiple-choice. Fun and mostly easy class!
Baldo is a great professor, very funny, and the lectures were never boring. Homework and tests however make up a good portion of the grade. Homework was free response and generally was graded very subjectively (by the TA who will prob be different the next quarter). Tests are very difficult as they are online and have a strict time limit.
Great professor, instruction is clear and engaging. Tests can be tricky even if you understand the material
Great teacher overall. Phrases questions on exams weirdly which is kind of confusing. DO the textbook readings (and take notes on them after lecture)!! They're so helpful in instilling the topics especially if you do them after lecture. It's a difficult class but he's very understanding and, in my opinion, a good professor. So funny.
Baldo is a very charismatic guy, lectures are slow-paced but interesting. You will need to fully grasp concepts to do well on his tests because a lot of the questions seemed to have multiple right answers but if you're ready to study a bit you will do well.
Class material is not difficult. He is a relaxed and funny lecturer.
Baldo is not a bad professor and is pretty funny. However he does go through subjects EXTREMELY quickly and packs everything up into one lecture for a lot of heavy topics. I suggest preparing for midterms and finals (take them from anywhere!) by looking over lecture slides and asking for help. Use TAs and LSS if needed.
Lectures were interesting and he is clearly passionate about the subject. Concepts were not that hard to learn and understand, but tests were worded weirdly. Attendance is mandatory as he had a quiz in each lecture that he would go over the answers for in lecture, so if you wanted to get the points for it you'd have to attend.
Baldo is a great lecturer, super funny and charismatic and makes classes fun and relaxing. Tests are hard even though they are online and open note, mostly because they are very specifically worded. Attend lectures and study and you should be good.
He is super funny and his lectures are interesting it's just a lot of information. I would have enjoyed this class more if it wasnt at 8am though because it's a lot to take in so early. Overall, I really liked him and this class though. Tests are SO hard though even though they're fully online and open note. I ran out of time a lot of them.
Prof Marinovic is a good professor and if you reach out for help, he will do what he can to make sure you understand the material. The class content was interesting, but sometimes a little lacking in interactiveness. He explains the material very well and if you attend class, then you'll definitely be able to succeed in this class without a problem
This was by far the hardest grading I have yet to experience as a third year in college. If specific vocabulary words aren't presented in the homework answers, 0 credit will be given for the question. Super disorganized lectures with a lot of rambling and no lecture prepares you for the homework or tests.
Not too hard if you read the lectures. Open-note midterm and final. Basically just an APES class with more of a focus on bio. The hardest part was just trying to figure out how to make a chart on Excel.
The class is not as easy as it seems. The tests are online, but nothing prepares you for them. They have incredibly long paragraphs of text that make it hard to comprehend the information under the short time limit. I do NOT recommend this course at all. If you perform badly on one test it is extremely hard to raise your grade. EC is not EC.
weekly worksheets where u get graded on whether or not you write specific definitions (TA's can help). the tests are not reflective of your knowledge of the course. the lectures do not relate to test content. tests mostly are filled w trick questions. wouldn't have gotten an A w/ out taking AP Enviro in HS or AP Bio tbh. class unnecessarily hard!!!
He's a silly guy and a good lecturer. I think he does cram a lot into lectures and it makes it difficult to know what to study for exams. He doesn't offer study guides, only old exams without the ability to check your answers. But if you go to class, do the worksheets, and study past lectures you'll be fine.
Lectures are long and fast-paced but well-structured. I recommend taking notes. Wording on tests can be weird but he and the TAs are always available and willing to help. All tests are online and open-note as well. Pretty easy A or B if you put in some effort.
Such an odd guy and seriously just one of the most boring classes you're forced to take as a bio major. Crazy strict rules about tests because they're online, no idea why he doesnt save the trouble and make them in person,, im not complaining tho. Lecture is mandatory but no code is needed for the in class activities, so its easy to skip it.
Awesome professor, keeps your attention the entire lecture, has in field experience, and makes his lectures personal. Likes to poke fun at kids who sit in the front but he also likes people who answer questions so be warned.
He is a good lecturer but the exams are a ridiculous. Midterm we had 20 minutes for 8-12 questions and the time crunch was stressful. Plus the questions have dense paragraphs to dissect. The final similarly we get 90 min out of 3 hours so the rest goes to DRC. Not sure why our time would get cut for DRC when they should have their own time slot?
Baldo's 20C class was one of the hardest classes I've taken at UCSC, and I'm a second year MCD biology major. Tests are online and were timed, super stressful, and had huge paragraphs to read and process all in a time crunch. All I would say is to go to office hours and ask help for the worksheets, as they are graded too harshly.
this course is insanely difficult. exam questions are extremely hard and lengthy with such a short amount of time, and worksheets are graded extremely harshly. only way to succeed to going to OH to ensure your answers are correct.
Amazing class, but worksheets are graded very harshly. On tests, you are only given a very short amount of time to complete them; no study guide is given to you, so just make sure you take good notes and go to OH to pass.
Professor Marinovic was a great professor, his lectures were always very interesting and on-topic. He tells lots of jokes but also prepares students for the assignments and tests well.
Baldo is a great professor. His exams are tough because of the time constraint, and the worksheets are graded pretty harshly. However, there are opportunities to get EC and the material itself isn't very hard to understand. He gives you all the resources you need to get an A, you just need to take advantage of them.
Good professor for the most part and I personally really enjoyed his class and teaching, however I knew people who did not. His tests were worded very complex so make sure to read the questions over at least one extra time. Tests are online and open book though so not horrible, but you will run out of time if you try to look up every question.
He was a good professor overall, the class wasn't hard especially if you've taken APES in highschool.
He's an amazing, hilarious person with a great personality. His class was difficult for me but I know other people who did not struggle. His tests are online and open-note, but don't take them lightly. His class really requires you to understand the material rather than memorize it. He has weekly office hours and always answers questions.
The tests were weirdly worded and confusing, but other than that the class was pretty easy. Just go to class and do the quizzes and you will likely be fine. There is a textbook but you don't have to read it the lectures are enough.
I had an 89.9% and he would not round me up. So annoying. But besides that he was a pretty good teacher, his TA's were sassy and rude but whatever they got the job done. The TA's grade the homework and they were such harsh graders. Tests are online and open note, super easy. If you skip lecture, do the in class activity during your class time.
