difficult to understand, heavy indian accent, but easy exams and very fair grader. teaches weekend/evening class. two exams worth 25% and final 50% all exams are open book n u could use all notes. no attendance.
good teacher and easy grader, but hard to understand and words will make u laugh. like he says "scare root" etc. open book tests but lookout for the final!
this guy has a thick indian accent, but trust you'll get used to it, however he is a really good teacher. he explains everything, always helpful if u have a problem,he is a good grader and a really good guy.
He failed me. His Final is hard. If you can understand Indian then you will do fine in the class, if not then you will get a D or F. Don't recommend at all. He nice yes, but the final is not easy.
DON'T TAKE HIM. YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND HIM. HE WILL HELP YOU OUT BUT ONE MISTAKE ON AN EXAM AND THAT'S YOUR BUTT. I RECOMMEND HENDRICKS INSTEAD. BECAUSE OF HIM I HAVE TO TAKE THE CLASS OVER.
He is tough to understand but is ok once u grasp the material. There are times at which is he rushes the class like crazy, but its all good at test time. U can ask him questions during tests. He not all that great but not bad either.
yes, he has an accent, but he is fair and at time funny. He understands we work hard and go to schoo at night. If anyone does bad in his class is because you did not practice the material. Remember this is college not high school, so we must work harder.
I must say he has a heavy indian accent but he is a great professor. He will go all the way to help students, you can even call him.The two midterms are easy but the final is really difficult despit it being open book.regardless of what this is college and these things are expected
He is a very nice man. You'll get used to the accent, and then you'll understand that he makes the subject much more understandable than the book does. Midterms are easy, final is hard, but he goes all the way if you need help. Take him if you are not scared of the accent, & you won't regret.
Although he may have a very heavy indian accent he does not speak in "indian" as someone stated,he speaks in english and furthermore the language is not indian ,its hindi or punjabi,he is a great professor but the final is difficult
Extremely easy! Can be difficult to understand due to accent, but explains things well and gives great examples. All tests are open book & notes. Very fair. Tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to earn an A.
He's a very nice man. The accent isn't that bad at all. 2 exams and a final (20%,30%,50%), all open book. However, this won't help you. His exams are EXTREMELY hard! There is a big curve at the end (85=A), but even this only helps a little. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOK!
In order to do well in his class you have to attend the class every session because he gives out hints on what is going to be on the exams. Make sure you can do and understand his review questions. Do his extra credit HW assignment. It makes a difference five points added on to your final grade. By doing all of this you will receive either A or B.
I just took him during the summer session and was glad I had him. Initially I was put off by his accent but u'll get use to it after awhile. There was a midterm and a final, hw helps boost ur grade and an 85 is an A. Just make sure you do his hw and test review questions. His exams are very similar to the review questions.
I took this class in the Spring 05. I had a good time. Professor easy to follow once u get a grip on the heavy accent. Fair in grading and tests are relatively easy if you stude reviews.
heavy indian accent! gives extra credit which helps you at the end of the semester. exams are open book but that does not mean anything!!! it is very tricky!!
Loved this professor! If you're not good at math, make sure to study. Otherwise, his lectures are enough to grasp the material. Can get an A if you put forth a little effort, but most people don't. Gives extra credit if you're the first to answer on-the-spot Qs he asks from time-to-time. Also has an extra credit assignment (summer only?)
This is not only the best Stat. professor in Baruch, he is the man with the biggest heart. He loves his students and he loves his subject, and he'll give you an A if you like it too. If you are friendly with math, you don't have to have a book, his notes will give everything, but if you're not good in it, buy the book and study. REcommended!!!
he is one of the best proff available at baruch, he explains everything in detail, is always there to help u and exams are open notes. Dont need to buy the book pay attention and put a little effort u'll get a A.
"He is the only professor i want to comment!" what can i said, he is terrible. if you want to learn something, dont take him. everytime students ask him question, he doesnt know how to answer, he will just say "are you listen to me" or "u dont know because u didnt listen to me" its a completely useless class. if you really want to take it, do mess
He try to explain a lot but either bcz of his accent or his way of explanation,it was always confusing. Will understand better/get good grade only if you read textbook.Overall not a bad prof. Very funny and kind man.Open book test, 85=A but don't think it'll be very easy. You need to understand the subj. i.e READ the textbook.
If you love math, this guy is great for you. If math doesn't come easy to you, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUYS CLASS!!!! I wish I could have gone into the future and read my own comments now, lol, HE is 1)Difficult to understand due to a heavy accent 2)LOVES to give CONFUSING statistics problems. 3)Crams WAYYY too much course work into a summer session.
I enjoyed this class, even though at first it seemed hard (I took it in Summer session), but eventually I enjoyed it. He is very nice to everyone, has a lot of patience, and generous with the grades. You should know basic math to understand him quickly, but overall he was great! I didn't even buy the book - all from notes - A.
Good Professor. If u know math a little this class would be easier though he has accent. Very helpful if u really want to learn the material. One midterm and final, one HW. Curves a lot. Also ask a lot extra points question. Best of all he gives extra credit question in the exam. If u work a little u will get A.
Hard to understand and confusing with tests. However, fairly easy grader.
I think he is a good professor, although he is hard to understand at times, he tries to make sure that you understand the material. Also, he is a lenient professor who gives alot of extra credit points in class and gives partial credit on exams. If you can adjust to peoples accents, then you should take him.
Choose someone else. This man believes that all asian people look alike. Which is just plain wrong. And I am not asian. Tests are not in english but a combination of Indian, and Pakistan languages. Good luck if you take him. be prepared to here the word "o.K" Or "do you understand me" every five minutes.
Who cares about STA when he grades that easily? I took his class during summer and thought I'd fail, but survived. If you need it to get in Zic than don't waist your time with some other professor. Though you have to do some work too, you are in college after all. I think he is worth taking and I'm glead I did!
I think he is thwe worst professor I have had. Even if you can get past his very difficult to understand accent, I don't think he did a good job of teaching anything, especially not the statistical concepts behind the various formulae. I also found him rude and condescending and not very helpful.
easy class
He definitely knows the material very well, but has a problem communicating it in an understandable way, besides a thick accent. Text is not used. Tests are open notebook, you can even bring your laptop. Do HW, attend lectures and take good notes and you'll do well.
People are too hard on him. He really cares for his students, he is willing to repeat himself when you dont get things the 1st time. Open book exams, take notes in class and you don't need to buy the book. Study practice exams and will do just fine on the real test. Even with a killer final, I'm actually going to miss him he was that good...
Do not buy the book, take detailed notes and understand his problems well, and you will be fine. He is kind of funny and very knowledgeable person. I like him.
Swell guy: makes jokes, despite his accent he makes material easy to understand. Listen to him carefully and don't miss one class, or you are screwed. No need to buy the book, the midterm and final are based on his lectures. One thing, though, he should improve is his listening skills. Overall, he knows his stuff and it's a fairly easy class.
i am gonna be very honest with you guys who want to register him. he is a very funny guy, and his class is kinda interesing. he has three exams, and homeworks, and before exams, he helps you review the past exams before, which are kinda revalent to what u are gonna have in real exams. he gives you plenty plenty extra points opportunities. howeve
however, he has a strong indian accent, which i think you could manage it somehow. overall, he is pretty good , not super strict
He is the worst professor ever in Baruch...He never listen to students...and overall terrible...Never ever think of taking him..if it is the only choice of you have. Take different class nexttime...
Sample tests reflected examples that were similar on the actual examination. Overall the professor was able to teach the concepts thoroughly for the student to grasp more easily.
He is funny. U need a good sense of humor or dont take him. He makes fun of everyone including himself. U might feel he's rude but he wants you to increase ur focus. He gives away tons of pts and practice test are mirror of real test. Cannot cram. Must understand concept. Buy the book and CD. It will help w/ ur hw (and A grade). Highly recommend.
I sat in the back, took down notes from board & blackboard, & never understood a word he was saying. I spent 2-3 days going over his notes before the exams. I got "A". Open notes exams, no book required & he curves but you better not miss a single class or you're screwed.
He is apparently a very experienced statistician. Teaches useful concepts well enough for everybody to understand. I really enjoyed the class, makes funny jokes all the time. Overall he is a good man, i'd recommend taking him.
I agree. This guy is funny. My best advice is to give him a chance. He seems scary and rude in the beginning. But once you get him, u'll be laughing and see that he's really trying to get you to undertsand the concept. Cramming will not work. you must understand the concept and do the practice problems. He curves. 85 is an A and he gives bonus pts
All other comments are mostly stat 2000 but i took him for forecasting(3155) and omg, don't bother taking him. He has heavy accent, barely understandable and is disabled, which means he goes lazy trying to write on the board. He doesn't even go over the questions from sample test anymore so you're basically screwed if you don't have outside help.
The person below is right. He is disabled and doesn't do much but talk all day in class. He's EXTREMELY hard to understand. I would definetly avoid taking him. If you must take a stat class and there's no other class left, it won't kill you to wait for next semester. Trust me, he is THAT bad. I couldn't do his take home final, ended with C-... :(
He's not really that good. His thick accent will haunt you. I dont think he really gave many examples at all in class. He just lectured on about the theory. The practice exam doesn't help much at all. He also said 85 was an A. That's not true, its really a b+. I think he only does that when the class bombs his tests badly. Don't take him.
After attending every single one of this guys classes, I can honestly say I learned nothing at all. Aside from the fact that his accent is unbearable, he does not use examples in class. He writes random formulas on the board but does not show how to apply them to problems and then gives us take-home tests and expects us to know how to solve it all
The course covered sections briefly mentioned in the book as "optional" (not explained), and then things not covered in book at all. The book is advanced and specialized already, so whatever was missed on lecture was nowhere to be found. Many exam problems were only explained on exam review. This class was more stress than learning.
Learned almost nothing new.His accent is unbearable, and he just shows off his knowledge of formulas+proofs but never does any examples. He expects us to be able to do the problems on our own. His take home test are difficult, but manageable with some help from google and textbooks.Negotiate for bonus points everyday it's hilarious! He curves.Got A-
Well I had tons of complaints for this Professor but than I saw my grade and now its all good. Yup Sunday lectures were boring. He digresses a lot. Didn't learn much from his class. Terrible accent But a very and I mean VERY easy grader. Gives out bonus points, Curves like crazy. I can't believe I am saying this But take him for that easy A.
Very hard to understand him maybe b/c of his accent. I must admit that he knows everything about what he teaches but it is always confusing to students. Very hard take-home exams. I didn't enjoy his class at all but the good thing is this class challenged me pretty much intellectually and made me to become a better thinker.
Professor Gill is a nice guy and he doesn't give students a hard time when it comes to grading. That said, he has a very heavy Indian accent, and his notes on the board are not eligible, although on occasion he put notes on blackboard. It was very hard to learn, especially in a class that really combined 3 courses.
He has a habit of YELLING difficult concepts at his class. The volume and intensity doesn't change anything; we still don't understand what he is saying.
Final exam was a take home exam. Now I know you think that should be pretty easy. Wrong! Too long exam to be submitted within a week knowing students may have five finals to go through. It was too much but I think that is his way of grading. Submit your HW on time, but you have to learn on your own. Class material is very poor.
You will get an A if you work hard on your own. You will get out with headache if you listen to him for two hours, very loud and heavy tone, tons of HW assignments. Midterm and Final are take home exams but, you will spend days on them digging since class material is poor. However, he is an easy grader if you do your part.
He explained the knowledge points very clearly. Although he has accent, it does not influence his teaching. It is easier to get high score in the class if you listen to his class carefully.
Knowledgeable professor and knows what he is doing. Has an accent so might be harder to understand but he will make an effort to repeat or re-do examples if necessary. Textbook needed for hw and no online material necessary. Gives practice tests before exam date which are SIMILAR to the actual exam. Overall, class requires studying but easy A/A-
Zero helpful explanations, just a great loss of time.
He claims to have taught himself everything and we should do the same. However, he fails to recognize he has yet to learn how to teach. The gaps in information are so big only someone with a background in SAS has a chance of completing the assignments. The book does you no good with it's basic examples and his notes have none at all.
The professor is a nice person, but needs to do a better job at teaching and polishing how he presents his thoughts. He seems tough, but overall and easy grader. I saw people go to him to successfully increase score with minor to no reason. Though you have to learn a lot by yourself. Overall good class that can be made better.
The professor seems a calm man who know the material pretty good, but unfortunately his hard accent is a problem. Also, he can't walk fast enough to go to the board and explain things with charts etc so this is a serious problem for students to understand. At this point the blame should be put on the Stat Dpt and this guy Elwarmi, he is in charge.
All take home exams and easy HW's. He knows his stuff but his teaching style is average. He can do better and is cooperative.
Amazing person but not a good teacher. If you go talk to him about home works or exams, he will be happy to help you with some tips. Take your laptop and study SAS in class running codes he teaches.
Such a good-hearted man. Unfortunately this doesn't translate to being a good professor. His lecture style is boring. DEFINITELY bring a laptop running SAS to class and follow along with examples. HWs are full credit as long as you attempt it and submit on time. Take home tests can be time consuming, but that's often the nature of SAS
do yourself a favor don't take him unless you have a ton of free time and learn the subject yourself. the lectures are useless and the exams are way too hard. i shouldn't have expected much from a school like baruch anyway. simply ridiculous.
Too focused on teaching trivial, almost hackish, SAS code than actually software based statistical. Homework and exams seem slapped together. Much lower quality than other Baruch classes.
The class is not set up well for learning SAS - its lecture style; would have made more sense if everyone could run programs during the lesson. The professor means well, but it is difficult to learn in this class. The book is good, if you want to practice on your own.
Nice guy but really doesn't teach anything. He can read off a list of SAS methods but not much else. Exam question are based on esoteric SAS knowledge that really have little to do with using sas, I know because I use at my internship. Does not return or give feedback on any assignments. Exams riddled with errors.
No matter how much work you put into the assignments it doesn't matter, you can turn in low quality work and get full credit. Sits there are reads the sas API line by line, worst way to learn programming possible. Guy means well but he cannot teach SAS. His exams can be tricky but most people have the previous version and work together.
This professor needs to learn to teach. This is a very hard class, especially if you were not familiar with the subject matter before. He allows you to bring laptops, notes, and whatever else in tests, and even had take home portions but still had to curve the class way up. He is available and will help you over the phone.
Nice man who means well but cannot teach programming at all. Worked in the software industry for over 10 years and you learn by doing and know what paradigm to tackle after learning something. This guy gets up there and reads the list of functions and then gives zero feedback on assignments and doesn't even post a solution. Tests are absurd.
Professor Gill is: 1. Extremely smart and knowledgeable of SAS 2. Extremely helpful The class is hard, there is no way of getting around it. No one practices the programming at home, so when it comes to test time they all do poorly. I practiced maybe 5 hours for each test, with no previous SAS experience, and almost aced each one.
Terrible teacher, jumps around material and you end up knowing how to do a couple specific things with SAS but not being anywhere near capable of using it without checking a guide every step. Tests and assignments were all on material not covered in class, or at best covered tangentially.
It is a shame that there is no other professor for this particular course. He is an easy grader, but his materials for class lectures are poorly documented/written. Worse yet, his lack of respect for student queries/comments in lectures does not foster an environment that stimulates any interest in learning SAS.
This man is a sage! Extremely knowledgeable. Excellent teacher, though material is extremely nuanced. Avoids questions because he covers EVERYTHING in due time. Be patient. Even teaches ALL of Regression and Intro Stats. Wonderful man. Lenient grader. Absolutely the best.
Dude has a weird obsession with leap years... In any event, he's an awful professor but you have no choice but to take him since he teaches a required course. Sometimes I sit around that class and I feel like I'm being taught by a cartoon character. He's incredibly rude to students, so much so that it becomes pretty funny after a while. Bring beer.
Professor knows a lot, but ability to explain clearly is not his strength in most cases. Vast majority of questions from tests and home assignments are not related to materials covered on lectures. Have fun and enjoy the class ! :)
he has hard tone but great person once you get past that knows well and very helpful deserves respect.
I couldn't understand his Indian accent at all during the first couple of classes. Even set aside his accent he is a bad teacher, he doesn't know how to teach at all! SAS is difficult but his teaching plan is not systematic!!! I really want to learn SAS but I got lost all the time, and so do many students! Plus, he never told us how to exercise...
Prof. Gill is extremely knowledgeable, however, he does have his own system. He wants you to be a programmer, so he teaches fundamental stuff that is not very practical sometimes (only glances at proc reg, glm, etc.). He is an exceptional person and is very respectable but you will have to take what you can from him. If u r passive u won't learn!
The topic itself of the class are easy to understand, however professor Gill won't help you understand. He has a very thick accent that makes it very difficult to understand what he is saying or explaining. If you're struggling with his class, search for prof. Leonard on YouTube, he covers most chapters of this class, the rest luck w/ the book.
Prof. has his own ways of teaching and many students don't like it but if you really put the work, read the book and do the HMW you will be fine. Make sure you ask him a lot of questions. He is always willing to give feedback and help students. Make friends in class and help each other. I never study w others but for this class I did and it helped
I don't really understand anything he says... but on the bright side, you can just teach yourself the material or do his HW (It's on Pearson and he doesn't give too much) during the class lol. He's honestly not THAT bad, his first two exams are OPEN BOOK, but then the final is not. hw is 20%, exam 1 is 20%, exam 2 is 20% and final is 40%.
His accent isn't as hard as everyone is making it out to be. Definitely pay attention and participate because he gives bonus points for class participation that boost your overall grade. His teaching style isn't really great and he does struggle to explain many concepts. If I didn't take stats in hs I would not have gotten an A.
Professor Gill is very caring when it comes to students, he literally gave all of the students in the class his home phone number, but he is not my teaching style at all. He only presents slides with no examples of questions until he reviews for the tests and he is not very engaging in my opinion. Also, his accent is heavy but understandable.
Professor Gill is very caring and a wonderful man. He will Help you in anyway he can and takes into consideration the amount of other things that students have to do such as working, other classes, etc. I would definitely take him again he is a very wise man.
He has an ego problem, reminiscent of high school "professors". The lectures are impractical and he never admits when he's wrong. His tests are full of grammatical errors which makes them unnecessarily harder. I'm just glad I didn't have to take his class in person. The course itself isn't too hard, so ignore the obvious fake reviews and stay away.
His accent is very hard to understand and makes a ton of grammatical errors which makes it hard to learn. Youll learn close to nothing in this class I dont understand how the department allows this.
Grammatical errors, very persistent. When you email, doesn't provide great responses. Exam questions can be very hard to understand at times due to grammatical errors.
He is extremely sweet and cares about your grade. As long you care and get your work done, this class should be easy. Take him if you can!
he slid me a blunt during class
the professor reads off of slides but does offer his own explanations and answers questions during class. Homework was through pearson and quizzes were on BB. I did have difficulty understanding his accent but otherwise the class was not that bad.
He's a pretty chill guy. If you pay attention during lectures his accent is not that big of a deal although it can be annoying at times. He uses his own grading criteria for the final grade instead of Baruch's and is very understanding. Gives extra credit to those who answer questions during class and always willing to help students and answer q's.
The mixture of his accent and the online environment made it impossible for me to understand ANYTHING he was saying, ever, and his continuous grammatical errors (even on exams) only added more fuel to the fire. I taught this course to myself entirely, to my detriment. I have no idea how he is allowed to teach.
He's not bad let's just say his teaching style is outdated. You have to teach the material yourself. Test and exams are very hard and have multiple parts. Just stay away
He is a good professor that curve your grades and provide extra credits. But it is hard to understand him because of his accent. Half of the class skipped his class because they could not fully understand and get bored.
I know this is a country of opportunities and I as an immigrant myself support inclusivity tremendously, however, when it comes to jeopardizing the education of many students, it should not happen. This professor has a VERY heavy accent which is almost impossible to hear and comprehend what he is saying. This will affect the student negatively.
I had to withdraw because his accent was like hearing gibberish. Don't want to be disrespectful because he could be a nice guy. But as a professor he shouldn't be teaching. Just reads off slides and I don't even know what he was saying. It's impossible to understand his accent. Choose anyone but him. Avoid him at all costs.
Doesn't speak good English. He's a nice person, however you're not really gonna understand in his class. You have to teach yourself. The tests are online and so are the homeworks. He doesn't care about attendance but you need to make sure your name is on the attendance sheet.
He is a VERY caring/supportive professor. Reassures us that we can call/email him at any time with any question. The lectures are rough, however, not because of his strong accent, but because he reads off of slides and teaches Statistics in a old fashioned way. Just learn StatCrunch, pace the HWs, and you're golden. Ignore the xenophobic reviews.
Taking Stats2000 with Mr.Gill has changed my life, for the better. I now have the ability to understand the intricacy of cultural understanding due to the constant language barrier we broke. Balwant is not only stickingly handsome, but his teaching skills and way of saying "measure"have truly changed the way I learn. Thank you Baruch for having him
Don't play yourself, the only way you can pass this class is by giving up your integrity. He is extremely hard to understand and he is completely disconnected from the homework and the tests including the final. This was by far the WORST class. Your only hopes are attendance, his bonus points (EARN ALL OF THEM I went from a D to a B)and, you know..
Easy and clear homeworks. Everything is online. He is nice and caring. Participate a lot, and get bonus points. They matter on the final homeworks. I did and it got me an A.
He's the greatest! This teacher is life-changing. While you might need to navigate a language barrier, he more than makes up for it by being a very caring person who is always willing to help. He'll go out of his way to support you, even encouraging you to call him if you're facing difficulties. Just participate, and you should be fine.
It's tough, but hang in there. Gill's teaching style takes adjusting, but use unstuck study and lecture recordings to stay on top of the material. Attend all classes, earn bonus points, and you'll pull through.
Great, Prof., if you can do StatCrunch! learn it via YouTube. Questions on hw are the same on the exams. 2 midterms and one final. Also earn all of the bonus points by rasing your hand participation really matters in this class to gain extra credit
He is a good person and always ready to help. He gives you many extra points, try to earn them all because they will help you later. Don't be afraid of his accent, it doesn't affect anything, he is not that difficult to understand if you really listen to him.
As long as you your ur hw test should be easy. Tests r all online and the questions are very similar to the hw. You get bonus points for participating in class. Nice professor.
Do not take this class with this professor. It is extremely tough to understand the lessons due to the language barrier. He also doesn't reply to emails and insists you only call his phone number.
