Not very easy, but he's fair. You'll learn the material, but you'll work hard to do so. Lots and lots of homework. Not very easy to understand at first either. Recommended for math majors only.
he makes u understand the main concept
Out of all the teachers I had, he's the worst one. He gives open book and notebook tests, but it's not that easy as I though. Whenever I wanted to ask him for help he told me I have to hurry up b/c he has no time. No other comments. It's not worth it!
heavy accent, happy, good humored man, right out of china, open notebook and text book tests, hard to understand
He is HORRIBLE!!! Not helpful at all, very hard exams. No matter how much work you do, it's still not enough. Open notebook tests do not even help. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
WE ARE NOT MATH MAJORS!/this class is horrible/he is horrible/the tests and quiz's are horrible/--boring /he doesn't even use numbers half the time when he's doing problems so its even harder to understand/this guy is lost in his own world!
he's a good guy, but you can't understand a word he says, puts screwball questions on tests, grades every single homework, and good luck asking for help. only take him if you speak chinese or can devote your life to math.
hard to understand, but open book tests and quizzes how can u complain. some people are roasting him here, but he is as easy as it can get. ull laugh everytime your in his class, my mans a goof with bad english
It was hard to understand him only in the first week. He is fair and konws how to teach.
This professor does not speak english clearly at all!! But if you can overcome his boringness and baddd accent, you will pass this class because he is a very fair test grader.
I am sure he would have been a good teacher back in China but here it does not apply much. Why? His accent is so thick it took me half the semester to find out what he was talking about. He is a good guy, but you are not paying the teacher to be nice.
Don't drop his class after the first week cause he's just showin the history of calc. Don't let his accent scare ya haha. Take his notes and youll do fine. I never did any homeworks but went to every class and got an A. Very lenient grader, don't drop
baojun song is the man.
Very easy. Heavy accent. But if you go to every class, take good notes you will pass every test and quiz. the test and quizes are openbook and open notes. You can't lose with that especially when it comes to Calculus.
Great teacher!! Be patient with his accent because it actually will help you remember. It also makes you listen. Open book and notes are great and he will give you good advise if you ask for it. Go to his office so you can ask him to repeat himself.
He's a funny and strange guy. VERY heavy accent and personally had a really hard time understanding him and had to teach myself all the chapters he covered. He covered mat really slow first and them sped through towards the end.He was ok, take someone else if you can - i would...
Boring. This guy can't speak English. No final, but a group project.
Hes the absolute man, great teacher, accent isnt that bad. Tests are easy as hell. Make sure you take down all notes, all open note tests.
Worst.
Can't understand him. Go to every class take good notes. Tests are all open book. I got an A, but take good notes
He teaches very well. Very easy. Just solve the assignment problems, then you will be alright at the end
this guy is hilarious...he told me he was gonna tape my mouth shut bc im always laughing but its him im laughin at. Heavy accent, teaches unnecessarily in depth so your better off reading the chapter; the quizzes are straight from the hw and the tests are open book/notebook..as easy as calc could be
this prof. has a terrible, terrible accent, you cant understand what he is saying at all. His exam are hard, but if you are good in math you will do fine. He says that he doesnt curve but at the end he does. He is very boring and if you tell him to slow down he will tell you to pay more attn and lis
Baojun Song is a great professor, Highly Recommend for a person who doesn't understand Math. Moves slowly and asks if everyone understands. First A in math I've ever gotten. If you want to learn about the subject, and get an A, He's the professor to take. Has Cheezy Jokes he says during class.
Take this professor. He is a little hard to understand, but you get used to it after like the second week. Open notes and book tests, which aren't that hard. I got an A and that never happens....TAKE THIS GUY :)
Straight up, never take this professor, no matter what. NO MATTER WHAT! He does not teach. Problems that appear on the mid terms and final do not really reflect what was done in class. take him if you love teaching yourself calculus and being frustrated with a poor professor.
First of all his accent is horrible, you can't understand what he's saying. Second, he knows a lot by he doesn't know how to teach!!! he's a terrible prof. Not willing to help, gets upset if you ask something and confuses you even more. His tests are open book but it doesn't help you at all. Don't take him!!!
If you need this class to get into the school of business, dont take this professor. He can be a nice guy, but is NOT a good professor. Have a problem...don't you even dare ask a question cause he gets pissed.
WOW! Just simply the worst teacher i ever had, Do Not Take HIM!!! you can barely understand him and when ask for help, he just blows you off and says its in the textbook.....I'm warning you guys, DO NOT TAKE HIM, i rather wait another semester for a good teacher then take him.
AVOID HIM AT ANY COST.he is horrible.not only is he biased against students who are not as intelligent as him, he favors students.he teaching techniques need to be evaluated and he assigns way too much homework. for any easy class i could not believe how many all nighters i pulled.do yourself a favor and avoid him if your not a mathematican
This professor is in his office even at 11 at night. He types notes for everyone and helps at any time of the day. For those of you complaing in Differential Equation you ARE trying to be a mathematician so maybe you should find a different major. Math is hard.
I cannot understand one word that comes out of this guys mouth
He is knowledgeable, but his bad attitude and failing teaching methods make for an awful experience for all but the favored few. He is an angry man who would rather be doing phd research than living his miserable life teaching lowly graduate students(most of whom probably scored 780+ on the math GRE). Find another professor who will respect you!

He is very nice and knowlegeable. He helped me doing homework by email.
A great mathematician and funny guy
I'm sure he's smart, and is probably a great teacher. Too bad none of the class can understand a word out of his mouth. You're in for a semester of self teaching some pretty complicated mathematics. A lot of times he isn't well prepared and he gets flustered really easily. His jokes are only funny to himself
Awful!...Montclair...what's wrong with the people who hires professors...They should allow REAL EDUCATORS to give classes...Not jerks!
I used to be a math major until i took this class. His lectures were almost impossible to understand and his english was worse. I got A's in calc 1 and 2, yet FAILED almost every one of his tests. If you want to spend an entire semester teaching yourself the material, then take his class. i really wouldnt recommend him -sorry
I had a knack for calc before I took his class. His quizzes are somewhat easy, but his exams are TOUGH. He collects homework and really doesn't offer much help in class, just tells you to look in the book. If I had to take this class over, I would not take him.
great professor, a lot of homework but he post solutions.
He should not be teaching. He may know math very well, but due to his pathetic english it is impossible to learn from him. He is also quite arrogant and not very helpful at all. If you are already accomplished in math, you can get by enough, but if you are taking his class to learn just forget it and take someone else. YOU WERE WARNED!
Tests were fair.He knows how to teach math.
The language barrier was rediculous. If I didn't understand something, I would raise my hand and ask, but that got me absolutely no where because he wouldn't understand my question, and I wouldn't understand his answer. You should have to speak understandable english to be a teacher/professor in the U.S. don't you think?
Language barrier could be a problem for those that need to hear the words to understand math. Gives a lot of hw (which isn't collected) and a quiz about every class. Posts the solutions to the hw online. I learned the material, so I would take him again.
Overall great teacher. Extremely helpful during office hours. Gives substantial amount of homework, but it helps for studying for the exam. Would highly recommend for Calculus 2.
He scares me. And does not believe that there is more than one right way to do a proof. Linear Algebra is not supposed to be hard, but with all his rules, regulations, and rigidity, I'm afraid it's going to be.
I got over his accent quick, but he rushed through difficult things and went slowly over the easiest. Not so bad a teacher. Take this teacher if you have no other option.
People complain about his accent, but if you listen closely, it's real easy to pick up, plus you end up paying more attention anyway. He's a good guy, pretty easy grader, gives some help if you ask, treats everyone fairly for the most part.
good guy. really cares just does not want to help you. will jump down your throat if you ask a question during class. i did nothin all semester, did horrible on homework and quizzes and still got a C in the class. he must curve or somethin
Song is great. He gives group quizzes on each section so even if you dont know what your doing between the four of you your bound to figure it out. He does have a rough accent but it didnt bother me too much. He is also extremely helpful and the tests were fairly easy. Also, Im pretty sure he curves the final grade.
HORRIBLE!!! Not only was his accent terrible, but he also didnt teach. He skipped teaching impotant steps and wasnt willing to explain or help. Quizzes and tests were hard even though some quizzes were group quizzes. HW was easy because it was online and all u have to do is use the practice button until u get ur answer, which helps u learn.DONTTAKE
My overall evaluation of Professor Song is good. Also, in my opinion his grading system is exellent...
My overall evaluation of Professor Song is good. If you are trying your best in his class, you will not fail. Also, his grading system is excellent.
He doesn't help you when you go for one on one. He is such a bad teacher! Don't take him. The book is barely used in his class. He sucks. Run away!
I didn't take math for over 6 years and never had calculus or precalculus in my life. It was hard for me to understand everything. He assumed everyone should be on the same level and missed a lot of steps while going through the material. He also refused to answer questions in class, but after all, a fair grader and definetely curves a lot ;)
I thought he was a pretty good teacher.. made stupid jokes and was not easy to understand in the beginning but the tests and quizes arnt THAT hard.. just study and the webassign and attendance are BIG extra credit points.. I thought I was going to fail but I worked hard and got an A =]
He is a great Professor. He simplified everything and he gives tons of extra credit, if you need it. I recommend him.
AMAZING! EASY! gives a review for the exam, which is basically THE EXAM, gave hw to hand in like 3 times, his quizes are a bit hard IF YOU DONT DO YOUR HW! I LOVED HIS RETARDED JOKES, FUNNY GUY, TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE TO!! strong accent, but hes SOOO NICE!!
He has a thick accent that you get used to eventually. Funny dude that cracks dumb jokes. As long as you know how to do the homework. You are pretty much set for his exams. Oh yeah, attend every class, he adds 5 points to your grade if you go to eery one of them. I honestly don't think he is as bad as everyone says. Be ready to work for your A.
Nice guy. Do not be intimidated by his curtness. If you go to him for help he will help you. His bark is worst than his bite .Do your best and if you show up to every class you get five points added to your grade.
Good Professor if you do your best you get an A,he adds 5 points to your grade if you attend his class. Funny jokes and very qualified Professor.
I dropped this guy's class because I couldn't understand a word he said. He wasn't helpful, and expects a lot out of every student. Only take him if he's the last option, I would suggest taking a Calculus teacher who can actually speak english. I hated his class and dropped after attending 3. He sucks!
Was very hesitant to take his class b/c of reviews but he was the only prof teaching the course. Strict and demands a lot from you,but he's such a nice guy at heart! He def favors girls. He guarantees that NOBODY will fail. You need to show up to class and do ALL the HW's if you want him to pass you. Yes he's a workload but he's worth it,love him!
This guy was very funny. Dances around in class to lighten up the mood. Material is difficult tho. Do all the hw. Study for exams because they can be challenging. Projects were extremely time consuming and sometimes wasnt clear on the instructions for them. Overall lively personality but help is limited.
Probably the scariest professor Ive ever had.Yet, probably the best professor ive ever had.If you are someone who is willing to do as much work as you need to get an A, you can get an A in this class. A lot of work, but I learned A LOT.Also, his class is very entertaining to sit through. He is hilarious. His accent is rough, but you get used to it
His bark is definitely worse than his bite and the man can be rude and unhelpful at times. His accent is something to get used to. Seems to focus more on math proofs above all else. Quizzes and bomework carry the same weight but the lowest grade is dropped. Two midterms and one final are given. You need to know Calc II for this class, though!
Cannot understand what he explains. He is not helpful and i did not like his teaching strategies.I didn,t learn anything from this class.
This class you need to review the material. He does have a thick accent, but you will get used to it. Must do homework. He does attendance every day. As long as you progress you should be fine. 2 midterms 1 final. I got a 86 and 79 on midterms. Homework average was about a 85. I got an A. He did help and was funny in class. Need to pay attention.
Hard to understand due to heavy accent. Arrogant, unpleasant fellow. Can be short-tempered if you dare ask for clarification on something.Must have bad relationship with university as he won't help you outside of his designated working hours.Doesn't seem to care about his students.Least dedicated prof.I've had.Prepare for unpleasantness.Prof grade;D
Homework is posted online on a regular basis, as well as solution set; HW generally not collected. Short quizzes at the end of every chapter, lowest dropped. Will keep you awake. Expectations seemed clear. Take if you an handle a little ribbing.
This guy always answers every question with "I don't know" and refuses to answer any email I sent him. Stay away from him if you can.
Study hard, do hw because quizzes and tests are from the hw. Show progress and you'll pass.
Assigned weekly homework that was occasionally collected, 2 exams, 1 final, extra credit questions, and counted attendance as part of the overall grade. Dr Song's class was demanding but beneficial to students seeking a deep understanding of the material. Quite the character. Couldn't help but chuckle at his quirky mannerisms.
No help from the professor. If you ask him a Q, he will make you look stupid. Instead of explaining the question, he will ask you 100 more questions. I had to study everything on my own, the lectures were useless. Killed the whole desire to come to his office hours. Don't cooperate with students. So far, the worse professor I ever had.
No help from the professor. If you ask him a Q, instead of clarifying the problem, he will ask you 100 more Qs and make you look stupid. Had to study every chapter on my own. Quizes every week, 2 midterms and final. Curves a lot otherwise 99% student would fail. He is the worse professor I ever had.
Funny guy, but sometimes his comments are rude. Its hard to understand him, but if you read the chapters than you can catch on. Gives hw and quizzes, which are exactly from the hw. Exams are a little tricky but he gives enough material to study for. You need to study just like for every math class. I wouldn't take him again unless I had to.
Aweful
Dr. Song is a great professor. He expects that not only you should pay attention to his lectures, but that you are keeping up with them. If you set aside some time to study the powerpoints and homework, the class should not be a problem at all. Textbook is mandatory and make sure to study really hard because it is possible to get an A in the class.
I would never take him again. He had his way of explaining something and that was it. Don't ask him a question, he will yell at you. Hes a very difficult professor.
Dr. Song's class is really not that bad at all. He has an accent, but you get used to it quickly. In fact, if you get past the accent he explains things relatively clearly. If you do the homework, then you'll have no problem on the exams or quizzes since the questions are exactly the same. Its a math class people, be prepared to work a little.
In the beginning of the semester I genuinely thought I was going to have to take it over because my grades were awful. You have a quiz every week and he doesn't check HW but if you don't do the HW you won't pass the quizzes. He's not helpful at all and he's kind of rude but as long as you study the HW and pay attention you'll be fine
He is a good professor, if you pass the accent barrier becomes easier to understand,if you have questions he will ask you a question but will answer it eventually. Do the homework and take notes you will do just fine in quizzes and midterms( 2 by the way) tons of quizzes but they are not surprise quizzes
Did not teach me anything about abstract algebra. Professor Song is hard to understand, and was not very willing to answer questions about the material. Material is confusing and you will have to teach it to yourself.
Dr. Song is a good professor. I had trouble understanding lectures at first because of his accent, but you get used to it with time. He can be very funny at times. Do the homework and you'll pass the quizzes. The exams questions come right off the quizzes. As long as you do well in those, it is not too hard to get an A. I would definitely take him.
He is very knowledgable and passionate about teaching his students. The perfect math teacher for non-math majors. If you are a math major then you should probably consider taking another professor since he goes really fast and sometimes it is hard to understand him. The class was ridiculously easy. Quizzes and exams were super easy.
Dr. Song can be sort of harsh and intimidating but is very knowledgeable and is a great professor once you get past the accent barrier. He gave us 3 tests, 5 quizzes and 10 homework assignments, if you do the homework and take notes in class you will do fine
Dr Song is a great professor really easy for everybody pass the class the exam was really easy. take him
Dr. Song is a great professor who cares about his students. He gives you homework but only 2 are required. If you practice each homework you will do great on quizzes. He gives you sample test questions from past classes/exams to help study for the exams. Overall, do the work, study the slides, do the practice test problems, and you will get an A.
he isn't a bad professor but his accent is very difficult to understand. combine this with the fact that he tends to teach fast, and it can be hard to keep up
Terrible.
Avoid at all costs, this university seems to hire anyone...
Beside the accent , pretty smart teacher. Just stop complaining and learn
He has a lots of things he has to improve, like he explains everything verbally. He's short tempered and he doesn't like repeating. But, He truly cares about his students. In one exam, he made things easier. On the project, he show us how to do the code in Python. He understands us, he's nice and I realized it too late. Practice and watch videos...
This professor has a terrible accent but he's very smart. Some people might think he has a bad temper but I think it's just the cultural difference. If you attend class and take notes, you will end up getting a good grade. He gives quizzes and tests based on the homework. Overall, his lectures are not bad and you should consider taking his class.
He has a lots of things he has to improve, like he explains everything verbally. He's short tempered and he doesn't like repeating. But, He is caring-trust me. In one exam, he gave us the answers. On the project, he show us how to do the code in Python. He understands us, he's nice and I realized it too late. Practice and watch videos in advance.
Dr. Song is a great prof. Hes super accomplish and is most definitely very knowledgeable in the field of math. He gave quizzes pretty regularly and his exam were a tad difficult but very doable. Hes a pretty funny guy too. Only downside is that the accent is thick but you get used to that pretty quickly.
(This is also AMAT240) I have no idea how the semester isn't over yet and I already want to leave. I understand the material, but if you run out of time to upload your work as a PDF you fail it. That's it. I'm glad people had good experiences with him, but so far it has been abysmal. Just change the quiz upload method and everything will be fine.
Professor Song is a good choice. Yea his accent is thick, but the power points are good and you can even look this stuff up on YT to prep for class or go over concepts. I'm almost done w/ this semester but this is for those professor browsing for Spring - this professor really is a good choice. Do your part and As will fall into your lap.
His explanations of theorems presented in Linear Algebra is very brutal. If you're great with algebra and know how to self-study, then it is very possible to pass this course with an A+. Exams and quizzes are based on the questions done on the homework. Homework isn't graded, but if you don't do it, then you won't pass. He is a fair professor.
You have a better chance at learning Spanish watching Dora the Explorer than you do at learning this subject by this professor. You cannot understand a word he says because he has the heaviest accent I have ever heard in the world. You WILL fall asleep in his class since you can't understand him. Have better chance curing cancer.
He has the heaviest accent in the world. You will not understand a thing. BUT, if you watch YouTube videos and read the textbook, you should have no problem passing the class. Also, he has a built in curve in his grading. Answers for all homework are online.
Dont waste your time
The professor barely knows English so good luck if you aren't familiar with Chinese or a thick Chinese accent. He cannot pronounce far too many words to be working in this profession. His lectures are lackluster and minimal at best. He does not teach in an effective manner so get ready to read your textbook. Also he grades your grammar in the HW...
The lectures are difficult to understand due to his poor English skills. He assigns a lot of homework, but it is not helpful in preparing for exams. He is also a tough grader who rarely gives partial credit. The only way to learn in this class is from the textbook, which is also difficult to understand. Avoid this professor if you can.
worst professor, can't understand
He assigns time consuming homework that the TA grades harshly. Not an impossible class considering most who take this have done calc 2, which is arguably worse. You will need to teach yourself a bit at the beginning while you get used to his accent. He posts past quizzes/exams which are useful when studying and you can use python during them.
To be honest, I do not pay attention to his lectures so that's on me. I did a lot of self learning for this class so I did well on the tests and hws. He also post exams from last semester and answers to everything. The grader (not the professor) grades hws harshly though so I hope he gets a different grader for his class. He's also lowkey funny ngl
I absolutely hated this class. Attendance is mandatory but he doesn't even really teach just reads off of slides/ You're gonna have to teach yourself most of the material and he assigns a lot of homework which gets graded by the TA. At least he posts the semesters past exams to help study. Overall would not recommend.
He speaks with a very thick Chinese accent, but besides that, his lectures are pretty good. Attendance is mandatory but is counted as extra credit (10%). As long as you pay attention to the lectures and do the homework you'll be fine. He also posts previous exams which are pretty much the same as the actual tests. Tests also have a built in curve.
He reads off of the slides and if you ask for help he will not help that much and will tell you to go try alone... He has a grader that grades so harsh and also checks the grammer. You need to study alone for this class to pass. The professor has a heavy accent and it's sometimes hard to understand what he is saying.
This professor is not the best! In fact he is the worst I've seen this far at MSU. His work load is not even the issue. He keeps assuming things that are not true about students. He could be racist and is willing to report you for something you never did. DO NOT TAKE IF THERE IS ANOTHER OPTION.
The course material is not bad. There is a grader and I know many say that the grading is tough, but it's fair if you put in the effort to solve the questions correctly. Personally, never paid attention to the lectures and I studied by doing hw's. No extra credit or curving, but the grading system is fair.
Worst professor I have seen yet in my time at Montclair. His English is very poor to the point where he is at many times not understandable. If you ask for help because of this he will be offended and not help you. His powerpoint are read verbatim, with little to no practice/help on any actual problems or applications of what's being taught.
heavy accent, hard to understand, and mocks students. issues with downloading Python with his instructions refused to give help, called students handsome, calls pairs of numbers as boyfriends having many girlfriends; asked a question for review, which he encouraged, and YELLED at me twice for saying his powerpoint wasnt the same as our review.
Thick accent. Mocks you if you ask questions. Doesn't give extensions. Strict about attendance even though you learn nothing from his lectures cuz of his accent. Two chapters of homework every week. BRUTAL grader; you lose points for minor mistakes (even if the answer and work is correct). The worst part: he's the only AMAT240 professor
The lectures can be hard to follow due to the professor's thick accent, but the course material is manageable if you put in the effort. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Yes he has a strong accent, but you've just gotta focus to understand. Lots of homework unfortunately but it was a good practice for the concepts on the tests. Textbook was a godsend most times & answers to the odd problems are at the end. He provided past exams/quizzes in prep for upcoming ones. Attendance mandatory which was really annoying.
Has a VERY heavy accent and is difficult to understand him. You'll have to study and learn on your own. BUT he has a built-in curve, drops a quiz grade and exams/quizzes are based on the homework. Leaves LOTS of homework. A class with him is bearable; can be difficult at times. BUT if you have other options, don't take him.
This professor has really bad English, doesn't respect personal space, doesn't take time to teach you, and is disrespectful. He just reads off slides, insults you, and while I was taking any type of quiz or test gets in my personal space to the point I can feel his breath on my ear. I get he is just making sure no one is cheating but that is horrid
wish I can say hes good but then I would just by lying.... very hard to understand him since he has a very thick accent, HW is on paper and graded very harshly. You need to remeber theroems and proofs on tests, he also is very hard to talk to - if you have a question, need clarification, or send him a email he will be little you and ignore you.
This professor is abosolute worst and I would not recommend anyone to take him. I would just say MSU needs new professors. He isn't helpful at all, just don't take him. And if you are left with no choice good luck.
Don't take this professor. His accent is very heavy which in turn makes the class and subjects he teaches inherently difficult to follow. He belittles and makes fun of you if you don't understand and ask to explain, which discourages others from asking questions. Learn AMAT 240 anywhere else for the sake of your mental health.
I'm writing this review 5 years after being graduated from MSU. In my 6 years of being a math student, I have never EVER had a professor this bad in my entire life. Every single time I asked for help, he would tell me a vague explanation. Extremely thick accent, you need to listen up and attend every class. He is NO HELP. Please do not take him.
Worst professor. Do NOT take him. He's extremely rude, and when you ask a question, he literally yells at you. Very, very tough grader He seriously needs to be more lenient
Take this class only if you're ready to meet Jesus personally. I wasn't religious before, but this class changed that real quick . very tough professor Montclair needs new professors..
He does not respect privacy he's a tough grader you're going to fail this class for sure his accent is very heavy
You'll study through YouTube, textbook, and other resources, but not through him or his slides. All his slides contain errors and confusing. His accent is the worst, and when you ask him to repeat, he becomes angry and mumbles. He's a tough grader and will accuse you of cheating if you use different methods from his. Doesn't respect personal space.
You're definitely going to fail he doesn't curve
