Be careful I know he'll read these. I'm still taking screenwriting and so far its a great class, but you need to have an idea for a story before taking this class. Barak = foxy yid.
He will eat your soul. No, really Barak is a great teacher, easy to work with. Show up to class and at least put a quality attempt into the assignment and you'll get an A
Goldface.. B-Rock.. Barak Face.. Ok many names one great teacher. He is definitely passionate. Great teacher even though he is new to the game... Explains things very well. Tests and Essays are easy if you go to class. Loves Top Gun (AHAHA or at least a group of kids who do) :) I would and have recommended him to everyone! Goldman for President!!!!
Barak Is A Wonderful Professor!~Barak is as entertaining as he is engaging in the classroom. He challenges each student to the best of their ability in a very creative and comfortable environment. His enthusiasm is contagious which helps me to feel fired up about my writing. Plus, he is always open and available to talk with each student which i
His style of teaching is watching a stand-up comedy and taking this class is one of the experience that would last in you for a while. He knows what is doing even through he would spill his screenwriting knowledge in lecture all the time but it is a class that is sure hard to forget.
He is "must take". passionate, funny, easy if you done what you have to do. many homeworks..but still okay. you should take him. i strongly recommend.
hes the most amazing teacher i have ever seen in my life. soo cool nice and humorous. BEST INSTRUCTOr.
Barak has a sense of humor and a heart, and yet he insists on teaching at De Anza. If you think you want to be a script writer, take this class. If you have screen writing to fill a requirement... TAKE THIS CLASS! You won't even notice the learning process, you'll just see results 11 weeks later.
It's hard to describe Barak in words. You have to experience him in class. He's one of a kind. He's energized the film department and given life to screenwriting. He is extremely helpful and knows his stuff. He gets high on diet Pepsi. He's a straight shooter, and uses colorful street language. Perhaps he should be Obama's running mate!
VERY fun and interesting class. He makes it that way. You will get an A if you take notes. HE HAS FACEBOOK! haha
Very awesome
Women want him, men want to be him. A god among men. He must use Bo-flex. If Chuck Norris turned evil, he may be our only chance. Diet soda is his kryptonite. (Don't tell Chuck Norris). By the way, he's an awesome teacher.
An amazing teacher with the toughness and grittiness that L.A. provides; and the sensitivity that time gives us with age. I hope to one day finish his class because his stories are funny as hell, and I learned a lot!
I never really thought about screenwriting being the career for me. After taking his Intro to film class i took his screenwriting class. Now it's all i want to do. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. I highly recommend this class.
Barak is one of those rare teachers who has the gift of humor. I was always paying attention in his class because I never knew whether he was going to pop a joke or teach something important about film. He also lets his students do a lot of talking. We had a great discussion almost every class. Barak should teach other teachers how to teach better.
Barak Goldman makes this class so entertaining and fun that you want to come to class more than just once per week (my section met four hours on Thursdays). There are three papers and two tests; everything is well-explained. Makes you enjoy film even if you don't intend to pursue it. Like someone else said, he runs the class like stand up comedy.
Funny and fun, he makes screenwriting so clear. A man on a mission, to make everyone the best writer they can be.
Barak Goldman is the best teacher possible! He explains well and answers ALL questions without leaving anyone in the dark. He is funny and interesting. Best class ever in any college campus.
Barak is by far the funniest, BEST teacher I have taken at De Anza. I came into his class not knowing what to expect and I am glad I gave it a try. I wish he taught math classes because then I would be more motivated to learn it. You learn a lot in his class and he keeps you amused. Very nice and Awesome! P.S. Barak.. Sam says HI! =)
I am not majoring in film, but I enjoyed his class so much I would consider taking another one of his classes just for fun. He makes school exciting and I actually looked forward to showing up to his class.
To be fair,he's a very nice and witty person. If you jsut wanna get an A,go ahead and dun skip classes. But if you really want to learn about film, dun take him.I sometimes regret taking him just because he's easy, but I end up didn't learn much things about films. One very bad thing is he never shows European film, which is essential for learning films.
The last person is an idiot. Goldman is funny as hell which makes u think ur not learning. You do learn a lot from him. Also, he shows a lot of clips of european movies from germany, italy, russia. This class is easy if you go to all classes and do all the papers and study for exams. Kinda like most classes. Goldman rocks.
I had him for Intro to film which was actually super informative and interesting. He made the class interesting! But now I'm taking him for screen writing, its just as fun....but not nearly as easy. Its easy enough but you actually have to put some work in to produce the correct results. Goldman is highly recommended!
awesome teacher. very easy class. learned a lot of basic film stuff. relaxing class. 3 papers and 3 tests. all easy peasy.
If you're serious about screen writing, you're only hurting yourself if you're not taking his classes. It's the best class I've taken by far in all my college years. Not only does teach it well, he also has the power to inspire his students. Despite the economical meltdown, I'm more determined to do this more than ever. Thanks Barak!
Knows what he's doing and will make you a better writer.
Barak has a clear and precise way of teaching and gives you the tools to become a script writer. His teaching is a step by step process that results in the writing of a completed script. Barak offers insight and advice on how to break into the Film/TV industry and how to avoid the pitfalls. I highly recommend Barak.
Barak is a Solid teacher - The class is fun , interesting and you feel compelled to attend . The only teacher I will reccoemend for Screen writing. Barak really knows his stuff. Two thumbs up !
Highly recommend! His class is helpful, funny, and easy! Three papers and two exams. Listening to lecture carefully and studying his notes, and you can give a good grade easily. However, you have to study hard for this class to get an A or A+. Teacher will give you a fair grade finally if he knows you study hard indeed.
had lots of fun in his TV&film class. Watching movies, doing some short and easy papers. Hella funny guy. TAKE HIM!
really funny! You actually want to show up to his class. knows what he is talking about. sexy personality.....too bad he's married.
Barak is the end result of a freakish science experiment infusing New York and Hollywood. Just kidding! He is a great teacher. His classes teach students how to effectively breakdown a screenplay to fully understand and hit the beats necessary in making a good, well-functioning story. The breakdown also helps the writer to baby-step through the
cont. The breakdown also helps the writer to baby-step through the daunting process of writing a full length script. He picks a Hollywood movie to breakdown throughout the quarter and regular classes consist of barak critiquing pages & workshop. He also talks about the biz, agents, optioning, etc. and he?s freakin hilarious!
TAKE THIS CLASS! If you like writing, if you like movies, and if you like laughing, take this class. His feedback is honest and helpful, he's hilarious and generally a great guy, and this class will teach you how to write a great screenplay. Do your work and get an A. Very simple, very fun.
Not only is he immensely knowledgeable in this subject, bringing a bevy of real life experience to the table, but he cares a great deal about his students and is more than willing to give of himself to add to their success.
Wow! What an amazing teacher - the best I've ever had, probably. Class is extremely fun and seems to pass by in mere minutes. He is also hilarious, making the class all the more interesting. Take his class even if you aren't interested in film!
Learned a lot from his class and found it very enjoyable. Movies were good, papers were easy, mid-term and final were easy if you study. Defintiley my favorite class! Ultra-cool and understanding if you need to turn in your paper late. Great guy overall!
mr.goldman is a great teacher [: his class is easy and he is an easy grader.. he tries to make the work entertaining and enjoyable & interacts much with the class. he does make you write 3 essays but he grades pretty descent on it. Text book is not necessary but you should take notes during his lectures to ace the class [:
This class is great. Movies were cool.. papers weren't too bad.. just go to class, pay attention, take some notes, and you'll be fine =) his class is so fun that sometimes you'll forget you're in a classroom. he's funny, entertaining, and knowledgable. this class changed the way i look at movies.
Offers great analysis and advice not found in the text. His experience in the field provides great background for application of what is taught. Fun class!
Best teacher ever.
Never, ever a dull moment in Goldman's class. He's honest when giving feedback and encouraging as well. I learned tons about writing thanks to him, he has a lot of knowledge of the film industry and knows how to teach a class.
Barak was such a great teacher! I took him for intro to film & since I enjoyed that with him so much, I decided to take him for screenwriting 60A & now I'm taking him for 60B & love the class! It feels so laid back and fun! I DEFINITELY recommend him! :)
Fantastic teacher! Really fun scriptwriting class, and he is very knowledgeable about good scriptwriting. He will challenge your scripts, and make them the best that they can possibly be. The best scriptwriting teacher at De Anza, in my opinion. His teaching style is kind of liberal. Lots of cursing. If you're uncomfortable, then it's unfortunate.
Frikken hilarious guy! He swears like a ****en sailor. Definitely the most entertaining teacher ive taken at de anza. easy A. just don't ask stupid questions cause he WILL cap all over you and embarrass you in front of the entire class! haha
Best teacher ever. Fun and easy enough so that even idiots are not needed to cheat. JUST TAKE HIM!!!!!!
1-day, 4-hour class but it's worth the time! Fascinating insight on film with one midterm, one final, three papers, and a couple extra credit papers. Just go to class everyday and you'll get an A since the material from the tests is on lectures and the handouts that he gives. Hilarious guy, promotes profanity, and it's easy to talk to him.
Great for film and very encouraging. Makes the class worthwhile and not a pain to come to. If you want to learn about the basics of film in a entertaining environment, take it with him. Two exams and three papers. The class shouldn't be hard at all if you follow all of his guidelines for all assignments and exams
mr. goldman's a really genuine teacher and i think he really enjoys teaching. he's super helpful and doesn't grade meticulously. learned SO much from screenwriting, and even about the real-world business of it. definitely recommended, even if you're not a film major.
Know his stuff. If you show up and take notes you will get a B or higher.
He's demanding and tough and honest on his feedback because he wants all us students to win oscars. And we can because he knows and teaches screenwriting and the business inside and out. He's inspiring and a genius and funniest person ever. Can't wait to take all the rest of his classes and win that oscar. Take his classes. All of them.
A reali reali funny guy!Talkative and helpful. He makes u laugh throughout the class, although the mid-term is in short question form and there r three papers, it's an extremely easy class, just do wt he said, then u can get an A. I got a reali low grade in the mid-term since i made lots of carless mistakes, but i get an A as the final grade.
Barak is the best professor I've ever had at De Anza. He makes the material interesting, his class is easy, he always cracks up the entire room, and he truly cares about his students' well-being. Not only did I learn more about film, he also taught me about how to succeed in life. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is definitely worth your time.
A great teacher.
Barak is probably the coolest teacher i have ever had in my entire life. he is funny and knows what he is talking about. he is easy to approach and ask questions or to just joke around with. He really enjoys teaching and does it so well. I never found my self being bored in his classes because he teaches in a way that makes you want to learn.
He gave me the impression he reads next to nothing, he might read some thing his TA pass on to laugh at. His knowledge of film is limited to lame comedy and maybe chick flicks. He is a semi interesting person but a techer should be there to teach not self promote. Honestly he is his own biggest fan and he takes his faliure in the industry out on us
An honest writer who teaches what he learned in a lifetime, served in one quarters time. Pretty well might be the most bang for you buck. Class topics vary and never get borring. Guranteed to make you a better writer, if you are ready to learn.
Great teacher. Definitely the funniest professor you'll ever have. If your a prude and can't handle a lot of cursing, inapropriate comments, and binge drinking references than don't take his class. If you wan't to learn a lot about screen writing and get some insight into the industry than Goldman's the best.
Definitely the only class I went to. Yeah, he may swear like a sailor and give you the HONEST truth, but he knows what he's talking about and only wants to make you a better writer. If you can't take criticism then maybe you should think of a plan B because obviously the film industry isn't for you.
Super interesting teacher and you never get bored in his class. He is amazing at analyzing our scripts and teaching us how to make it better. Learned so much from him and he isn't to bad to look at either and he is very funny.
The best teacher I have ever had at De Anza. If you're a hard worker and serious about becoming a successful screenwriter, take this class. As long as you are willing to put the time into your writing assignments, this class will definitely make you a better writer.
I have taken many classes seminars on storytelling none have been as useful as Mr. Goldman?s class. At the end of the quarter you walk away with a good foundation of scriptwriting. My ADD brain can?t handle 4 hour lectures, but w/ Mr. G you are always entertained! If you are serious about writing, this is the class for you.
the best
Honestly the best teacher. He is really into his work, he is a busy man but, contains a true passion for the film business. Not only does he teach Film, he teaches the basic fundamentals of life, that we college students sometimes lack. Got a B in the class. Attendance isn't mandatory, tests are easy. Best teacher I've had so far! :)
he tells like it is, he cusses alot but he is a cool teacher.
He's hilarious!! I enjoyed every single movie that he showed in class as well as lecture. I had the biggest crush on that man :)
Excellent professor! Fun, lively, knowledgeable. Best professor in the Film TV departmetn at De Anza College.
Barak is a character. He can be hard to get along with, especially if you're used to doing things your own way, but his advice is invaluable. If you want to be a serious filmmaker you have to talk to him and take advantage of his experience. His criticism is harsh and usually a wake-up call but he's a fair grader and makes class enjoyable.
Barak is the best teacher that I have ever had in my life. He is absolutely hilarious, extremely inspirational, and really knows what he's talking about. His classes are always the highlight of my week... I can't wait to take Screenwriting Fundamentals II next quarter! :)
He is passionate about screenwriting and will talk all about himself. He will think your scripts are terrible no matter how good it is. He says this is a learning experience. He hates everyone equally, and the best grade you can get is a B.
Barak is an amazing, intelligent instructor. He's blunt about the screenwriting world but he's very honest and cares to help his students do excellent work. He makes a student want to fight if their up for the challenge. He's one- of- a kind!
Barak is hands down the best mentor I've ever had in my life. Not only is he a fantastic teacher, but a great friend, and when you can connect on a personal level learning comes naturally. I hope he comes back to teaching some day. You the man teach!
Just AWESOME. Very funny and definitely teaches you loads. Without question my favorite film teacher in the entire Film department.
I took his intro to film and screenwriting 60A even though I didn't need the latter. He's an amazing teacher that you'd want to take classes from over and over again. He can also be a great friend and mentor too. Knowledgeable, hilarious, clear, straightforward, and easy to approach. Highly recommend.
He doesn't give/take constructive feedback well. He can give you ruthless criticism just to vent his anger, using you as a channel for venting. If you present your thought in a positive way, he thinks you "argue" with him, he gets enraged and hammers you.
Barak doesn't really have much to offer in terms of information unless you are interested in Adam Sandler style comedies and even his information on that is a bit dated. If you want to learn to write drama, action, tragedy, dark comedy, ect. this isn't the class for you. He also doesn't really treat his students with much respect.
Goldman makes learning fun. Even with 4 hours each class, it never gets boring. He's hilarious and knows his stuff. I wanted to be a director but after taking this class i now want to focus on screenwriting. Highly recommend.
He's a really funny and passionate teacher. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you get easily offended though. He does swear a lot. Don't let a big ego get in the way of his commentary on your script. He knows what he's doing when it comes to story structure, so you learn a lot.
By far the most real, down to earth teacher I have ever met. If your interested in FilmTV take this class as you probably have all sorts of ideas in your head. Professor Barak Goldman will teach you how to format those ideas or concepts into stories. Just like every building starts with a blueprint, every movie begins with the script.
Not only does Barak know how to teach screenwriting extremely well, he makes 4 hour lectures fly by with his enthusiasm and great sense of humor. Screenwriting is very tedious work but he helps make it as fun as possible and you can't go a single class without bursting into laughter at least once. I love his classes.
Thanks to Barak's extraordinary instruction - I sailed through a Writing Workshop at the Big Island Film Festival - with Jen Grisanti, NBC Writing Instructor. (Previously mentored by Aaron Spelling). Nice to know I'm in such good hands - many thanks to Barak for everything!!
Had him for 4hours, once a week. Ive had some interest in film and I needed 4 credits so I took him but almost dropped his class because I thought he graded solely on paper grades. Come to find out he is one of those teachers who cares less about grades and more about willingness and effort. Just DO THE WORK. He's the real deal AND he's HILARIOUS!
It's a mediocre writing class with a bonus of teacher's immature attitude and bad personality. This guy would make fun of your screenplay with his favorites and gossiping you with all kind of bad things behind your back. He doesn't respect his students' works and he would tear them apart. He shouldn't be a teacher at all with that attitude.
Professor Goldman is hilarious and gives fun lectures. He gives alot of information but always makes it fun. He's very loud and intimidating at first but is actually a very nice person and and easy grader. I thought he was going to give me a c but I got a b+. I took this class it was required for my major but will take more from him.
Barak teaches you the craft of screenwriting, coming up with the creativity comes from YOU. Some students can just be lazy or don't devout time to their work or just write B.S. Dont be that type of student. Barak is really the best, sure he may a lot swear or use Billy Madsion too many times, other than that I was greatful to be taught by him.
I took his class back in spring and it was a huge disappointment. I wonder how he got rating for his FTV 60A and 64 for last summer 2015. None of those classes were available back then. Most of his ratings seem to be inaccurate.
Most inspiring, helpful, caring, hilarious Professor I have ever taken. Makes me want to not only write for a living, but just work harder in life. Spends own time to help you on your writing. Would describe his lectures as educational stand-up comedy. Knows the business and doesn't sugar coat. He cares about his students! Strongly recommend!
We're very lucky to have Barak as our screenwriting instructor. He's funny, caring, fully experienced . Barak does favor Indie Films more than Hollywood Films, cuz Indies have better story. Sure Barak swears and ridicule your script that may hurt you, but Barak will never ever means it. Hes toughing you up to one day deal with worser studio heads
Very informal, natural lecture style. If you're willing to improve, he can help you do it. If you aren't, you'll struggle. He treats his students as people - this also means he can be brutally honest, but his criticism is always constructive. If you're having trouble, he'll help you as much as you need as long as you seek out that help.
It was great being taught by Barak over the years. You need to take Barak at least 2-3 times if you want to be a stronger screenwriter. One class isn't enough. Barak is always the same guy and teaches the same in all of his classes, he's a full on train that never runs out of steam.
Love his Joke! His jokes are always so visual, makes you wanna listen more! Decent grader, but you'll have to work hard for it!
Baraks methods are to test you if your capable of writing your script. I believe if you drop the class midway is not because Barak "slammed" your work in front of the class, is because you obviously aren't capable to write your story. Its not easy work. Plus Barak's a very caring teacher, hed even pulled over on the side to talk to me.
Its always great taking Barak to strengthen your screenwriting. But its always the same in his class: Barak tells jokes, his family drama, asks who has work (only 2/3), asks his TAs to count heads, breaks us up into groups, Barak ends early to go home to his dog he sometimes brings (awesome dog) Overall, Barak is never boring, but his class is.
Sometimes I dont get why Barak have these 2 classes together. There no difference. C is the same like B. Same film ex: Billy Madison, Toostie, My Cousin Vinny. Same dislike for Titantic, Avatar, The Dark Knight. Same No Late Scripts will be take in. He always accepts them, Barak's too much of a nice guy. Barak's style is unique and unexpected.
Don't get me wrong, the man's a good screenwriting instructor, but I don't like the way his class is structured and his endless excuses for coming in late to class or his office hours no wonder he depends on his TAs. Sometimes you'd wished the department can hire an extra screenwriting instructor. Although Barak will always be a popular choice.
Barak's a cool dude. You don't really need the textbook his UCLA Mentor wrote. He doesn't quizzes you on it and looks pretty outdated. Screenwriting is not all that easy, no one in the class nor his TAs are great screenwriters. Barak wants you to think that no work is perfect but you got to work hard for it.
Don't really take 60C and 64A concurrently like I did (less your getting the Screenwriting AA) 64 is more fun because Barak "babbles" less and wants everyone to focus on their script, I want to focus more on my work than to hear Barak babble on more in 60C. You can tell that Barak would rather teach UC level Screenwriting instead, but he love us.
He doesn't use a textbook so there's no tangible way to see if you're doing okay. He jokes about that going against his way is the wrong way, but who knows. He doesn't read homework/assignments, his TAs do. He's usually late and curses way too much. Would not take his class again.
You think that in almost a decade of teaching, Barak would come in more well prepared in class, instead of giving us an excuse to why he's late. Barak doesn't keep the class moving forward, he falls too behind. He spends alway too long on subjects that you already learned in 60A or going over someone's work, no wonder people ditch class.
Barak is fun, but he can't get anyone to open up on sharing their work or take constructive criticism. If you don't put the effort in your logline and beatsheet, it can affect the overall quality of your final 10-pages which is your final grade. Careful, Barak barely responds to your emails (he gets a 1000 a day) Hit him up on Facebook!
Barak needs to keep his personal life to himself. Every class he expresses sympathy for a family member or why he's late. Barak's a caring guy, but I don't come to class for that, I come to learn. Occasionally, Barak will end class like 2hrs early in case he feels students need to work more on their beatsheet or scripts, don't fall behind on that.
Barak is a fan favorite and consider the most popular FTV instructor due to his helpfulness, caring, and humor. But criticized for pushing it too far, being unorganized, constantly complaining about life, and criticism of a student's work. Don't ever take anything Barak throws at you personally. 6 classes with have been the best experience ever!
According to Barak, the way he teaches is the way he would want to be taught if he was the student. Hes his own dream teacher. Not all of us like putting up with Barak's immature toilet humor or being unprofessional. Barak doesn't plan out his class, he make it up as he goes along depending if anyone brings work, which only 3/5 of class does.
Visiting Barak at his office hrs is very useful if you get stuck in your work. He's very helpful, if Barak disagrees with you, don't argue with him. He knows what he's doing. Barak carefully reads all his student's final pages, he can tell if the work was rushed or done at the last minute, he doesn't have a Masters from UCLA for nothing.
