Everytime a student asks him a simple question he just brushes them off and respond with such rude comments. Not helpful at all. Would not take any class that he'll teach in the near future. I do NOT recommend having him as a professor.
3 Tests were the entire grade. They reused notes and tests from the previous years. It's an easy course overall.
He is generous and knowledgeable. His science elective courses ASTR 1P01 and 1P02 are super easy to get A+, but he was pleased to answer students questions if they want to know more.
Similar to ASTR 1P01 The whole class was 3 tests, however he balanced the tests more which improved the class. Still reuses notes and lectures and is very easy if you study the practice tests given.
Real Gem is very knowledgeable.
He always responded to my questions and advised me to read the textbook.
Study the practice tests. Trust me. The course was not difficult.
Really easy class, prof was very helpful to answer questions at any time and was very quick with doing so. Planning on taking ASTRO 1P02 because it was such an easy good grade for a science elective.
Couldnt have asked for a better professor to help start off my first year at Brock U
Prof is easily accessible and the content is easy. Review the practice tests and you are set. The lecture and notes are not his, they are from another retired prof so Shoshany was only there for questions? Would recommend this course and take again. Course is 3 tests that are open for 1 week, given ampule time to complete tests.
Great guy overall. Very helpful when asking questions. Also very direct and offers lots of reminders.
Great prof
helpful
It was a pretty easy class, and he was always down to answer the questions we might've had so yeah, pretty cool
Very passionate about physics and his field. Funny, inspirational and organized. The professors we need more of
Excellent, organized syllabus. Clear expectations. Professor Shoshany gave prompt and helpful feedback to students' questions.
super easy course and the professor is very accessible.
Prof. Shoshany clearly cares about his teachings as well as the students, providing everyone with as much support throughout the course as he can.
Content was all old recorded lectures, and there are only 3 marks, final exam is worth 50%. Gave us practice exams with wrong answers and responded to being called out by saying he wasn't responsible for the quality of the material, in his own class. The course is not worth the money you're paying for it. A positive is he gives help very quickly
Professor Shoshany is very approachable. He answers students' questions quickly and gives clear explanations to concepts. Overall, I give him 5/5!
Always answers students' questions and willing to help!
Very responsive to emails and understanding. Not a cruel professor who wants students to fail. very helpful even after hours. there's nothing more you could ask for in a professor
Good classes, very understanding when class had concerns about the quiz. Easy to contact if you need help, and very professional.
Great Professor! When I started this class, I was a bit scared as I am not the biggest Physics fan despite being a science student. However, Dr. Shoshany stuck to the textbook closely, explained the (admittedly tough) material clearly, was fair when grading, and paid attention to students' opinions about quiz difficulty. Overall an A+ teacher!
Accommodating towards students, weekly quizzes but not a ridiculous workload. All concepts are from fhe textbook so it's easy to catchup if you miss lectures.
The class was relatively easy thanks to professor Shoshany. Our grade was based on three tests and he stuck closely to lecture material. There were no trick questions. The questions closely matched the previous exams he released for us to study from. However, he did not create new lecture videos, just used old profs stuff.
I enjoyed taking his course, because he taught it as a theoretical physicist. I'm so used to seeing the solid state physics perspective on quantum mechanics. I found it refreshing to have a completely different vantage point for once. Do his practice problems! The tests are based on them.
The course was focused on the foundations of quantum theory rather than just solving an equation over and over. Professor Shoshany makes himself available for help outside of class, all lectures are based of his (free) lecture notes, and all tests are based off homework questions from the notes. Make sure you do all the homework and come prepared!
The course was taught based on a set of lecture notes written by Prof. Shoshany himself. He is very clear in his explanations both in the notes and in lectures. The grade is made up of tests that are entirely based on problems in the notes, and grading is fair. He cares a lot about motivation and understanding of theory, which was appreciated.
Great Professor for Astronomy.
Awesome professor! The videos and live physics demonstrations are really fun and help understand and visualize the material. He is also very approachable out of class and responds quickly to questions on Teams and by email.
Prof. Shoshany is a really good teacher. I'm not a physics major but so far I'm enjoying his class very much and even getting better grades than I expected to get. I always found physics fascinating so I love when he talks about cool stuff beyond the course material, for example all the different elementary particles that physicists found.
Best class I took all year
Barak has a personality that is a good mix of sarcasm and sincerity and it took me a bit to get used to him. This was mostly due to his teaching style not mixing well with online lectures. But once in person, he delivers very thorough and clear notes. If you put the effort in, he will make sure to let you know that he notices and appreciates it.
Explains concepts well and really wants students to understand, however the lectures are not very helpful when it comes to test and quizzes. & what you need to know is not narrowed down very well, even if you do the homework questions and go to the tutorials.
Dr. Shoshany managed to teach and help understand physics to someone who would rather jump off a cliff than look at equations. He values the concepts more than the numbers, especially in the quizzes. Effortlessly hilarious, perfect the way he is. Attend the LECTURES (amazing live demos), and put in the effort. He cares about your success.
I didn't pay over 1000 to take a course to do nothing but from the textbook. If you don't learn well by reading, too bad! I have taken many Asynch courses and prof provide lectures that you can go through at your own pace, not this prof. He used teams for help answer questions. It was hard to follow and root through the important Info.
Prof. Shoshany is the best! He posts practice questions and solutions every day or two that help prepare for the tests and answers questions on Teams any time of the day and night. Wish there were in person lectures but the async format is great for someone like me who wants to work during the summer. Enjoyed 1p01 and now taking 1p02 too.
Not a science student but I had a lot of fun learning about astronomy. My recommendation to anyone reading this is: if you don't like to do a lot of reading, you should take this course in person in the fall instead! But the prof was very helpful and accessible, and he also said he is working on new video lectures to replace the old ones.
This class was asynchronous over 5 weeks yet there was 3 mandatory exam times with no option to write an any other time. This was not advertised at the time of registration. There was a lot of reading. The prof did post sample questions for you to work on, however they came in late making it hard to work on while you were reading.
Just finished the final exam. It was a fun and easy course! The questions the prof posted on Teams really helped preparing for the tests. He also posted cool videos about astronomy and even about his own research in time travel! It's clear he really loves what he does and loves teaching this course.
Astronomy is way out of my league but it is such a fascinating class! When you learn about Dr. Shoshany, it is obvious that he is passionate about his work and loves what he does! I was very impressed with him. He is an awesome professor, he is very fair, has a sense of humour, and always answers your questions in a short period.
I've always absolutely hated physics classes, but Dr.Shoshany actually made it tolerable and gave me at least a little bit of interest in the topic. So this year I'm taking astronomy with him too!
He is a good professor who cares about the students. We have Microsoft teams where we can ask him questions, where he puts practice questions, and where we can discuss with other students in the class. I always look forward to his classes and it's an easy 3 test per-term system. I would for sure recommend!
Prof. Shoshany is amazing. I got 100% in his class as the only criteria you are graded on is 3 online open-book tests. He gave 5 bonus points to everyone in class just for being a good class! Amazing lecturer and his explanations really help you understand the basics of astronomy. Recommend 100% take this prof.
Overall a very enjoyable class. I liked the lectures, and it was clear that he wanted us to succeed.
Overall easier class. Gives many resources for helping understanding. All based on 3 exams throughout the semester
This professor does things his way or the highway whether you're an online or in-person student and from what i've seen in emails and microsoft teams messages he communicates with students like they're beneath him, he also copies and pastes sections of the syllabus when someone has an important question clearly had nothing to do with said section.
Great prof! Easy
One of the best professors, he truly cares about his students and makes you love Astronomy.
Great Proff
Cares more about students than probably any other prof I've had. He also puts in a lot of hard work to make sure all students have a good learning experience. Exams are very easy if you put in some work. Word of advice tho, stop asking the same 5 questions over and over again on teams when everything is clearly laid out on his website Lol. 10/10!
He made this class easy to achieve and set realistic expectations. He is a bit rude tho sometimes, i wouldnt ask any questions lol. Makes the exams achieveable, love this class
The prof is very entertaining and personable, he does not teach and just reads off lecture slides. Then when you ask for help he says ask questions on his teams' channel or "watch youtube" as opposed to doing help sessions. There are no seminars to this class & there are only exams. Avoid this class if this teaching style & exams are not for you.
A very amazing prof who is funny and cares and actually wants students to succeed. If you have a chance to take him. TAKE IT. You won't regret. :)
Dr. Shoshany was very good. Even though the course was only made up of 2 exams, they were based on the info provided in lecture which he explained well. He is very respectful and is a prof I would definitely recommend to take courses with.
shoshany the goat take this class.
Dr.Shoshany is a very good professor, very clear in his material and has great knowledge about astronomy and general relativity. His exams are easy if you read the material and ask questions in class. Smart man who provides his students with the tools to preform well in his course.
The lectures can seem daunting but proper note taking and paying attention during lecture is a very easy recipe to ace this class. ASTR1P01 is entirely marked on three in-person exams but you are allowed 42 pages of handwritten or printed notes. Slides and info are very available online and he answers questions on Teams. Clearly passionate prof.
Took this for my science context credit I went in thinking it would be boring but the professor quickly changed my mind. I enjoyed the lectures, he uses pictures and videos that help you understand the topics he talks about. The videos explain the concepts in different ways and so help when you might not understand something.Hes a pretty chill guy
A very good, passionate prof who cares deeply about his students and their success. His website is also really helpful!
Gave everyone extra 10% on final grade
Lectures were engaging and only 3 exams to determine your grade, open book with 42 pages of notes allowed. Professor clearly has a passion for what he teaches.
Amazing! 42 double sided pieces of paper as cheat sheets for each of the 3 exams. If you take this class I recommend making a table of contents for your cheat sheets, makes everything easier to find. Everyone's marks were also bumped up by 10% at the end of the term.
Awesome course and professor for a first-year context credit. Only consisted of three open-book tests and he was generous in giving the entire class a 10% bonus.
Excellent Prof and perfect first year elective.
Professor Shoshany is very clearly passionate about the subject, but this doesn't really translate into lectures. They are quite long and boring and he drones on in the lecture reading his slides. Is quite personable though and was very generous about the course. 42 pages of cheatsheet notes is INSANE and gave all of us a 10% bonus at the end.
Easy class but lectures are boring. Tests are easy as long as you pay attention to lectures.
Best prof ever! ASTR 1P02 is tougher than 1P01 but very interesting. Prof. Shoshany explains everything very clearly and always leaves time for questions. He is clearly passionate about the material and cares deeply about his students.
His lectures are very interesting. He doesn't read from the slides, he explains what's written in them. There are lots of amazing photos and videos included in each lecture. He is very nice and easily accessible out of class through teams.
Such a sweetheart. Very passionate about astronomy and loves when students ask questions.
Best professor at Brock. That is all.
He managed to somehow make a physics course fun!
Learn the materials and your fine
he makes him self available to answer questions but doesn't actual answer the questions.
Overall very passionate about what he does. Course is easy to succeed if you watch lectures. Professor Shoshany is great overall, even made his own course website and AI study tool which is extremely helpful.
His main focus is making sure you understand the theory and math behind the physics. His lectures are very clear and he does all the derivations carefully step by step. Quizzes are tough but often take questions directly from the textbook so if you do the homework you're fine. Overall one of the best teachers I ever had!
An exceptional professor who genuinely cares! The material is hard and he gives tough exams. But he makes himself available to help 24/7 by email, teams and office hours. He even created his own AI "Albert AInstein" who knows everything about the course and is very helpful. He is funny and very passionate about physics and math.
Best professor ever! Available to answer questions 24/7 and always makes sure you understand the material. He is also just really nice and helpful if you meet him in person. ASTRO 1P02 is harder than 1P01 but if you just watch the lectures and make good notes you will be fine.
He was a nice professor, but the content itself was hard to understand. He posted all his lectures, so half the time, I didn't go to class. There was three exams that were open book, however!!
Very easy prof with a clear grading criteria. He was very cleary passionate about the course material, which really helped me stay engaged and want to learn more myself.
This prof is amazing. He explains extremely tough concepts with so much ease that it's easy to understand. His tests are fair and you can tell that he actually wants you to learn things. Loved this class.
The course is honestly extremely fair and the exams reflect what he puts in the lecture slides. Having the notes makes them simple and he's interesting during lecture.
Really goated teacher, Shoshany shows up, lectures and leaves which for some classes could be difficult but it works great for Astro. He lets you bring in like 42 pages of typed notes to the exams which is genuinely a lifesaver. If anyone tells u this class is difficult they're lying to you. 11/10 class and a pretty free grade.
The other review are most definitely fake. This professor had little to no regards for mutual respect towards students. Would spend the entire class doing derivations and although cheatsheets were allowed, they would quickly become of little use if you didn't have the exact same formula or derivation written down. Avoid taking this class if you can
One of the more interesting classes I have taken and the exams are really easy as long as you take good notes. He allowed 42 pages of notes front and back and provides a lot of practice material that can be used to prepare for what kinds of questions to expect. Explains things really clearly in lectures and doesn't use tricky wording on the exams.
