I'm glad I love science b/c if I didn't I'd go crazy in her class. Don't take her! Lectures are boring, tests are ridiculously hard, and did I mention how mudane the lectures are? Just take my word and don't take her class.
She is a great teacher. If you attend class and do your work you will do well, if not that is your own fault. I learned a lot from her!
If you do your work, and somewhat study for the tests you will do fine. If not, there are MANY MANY extra credit assignments she gives that can boost your grade by 30 points! She is a great teacher, if you do your work.

She is a wonderfull teacher! She is not a hard grader and she will help you if you are falling behind. She always has the papers graded when she said she would have them. If you just stay awake and write down what she writes on the board you will pass.
Do yourself a favor... take her class. You might be intimidated at first... but don't worry you will not regret it. Take this from someone who started out with a C and ended up with an A. I would say much more but there isn't any space left.
Great teacher, she is willing to help and explain over and over and she will never say that you are wrong! She will try to show you that you have sometnig good in you! And if you don't study you WON't pass, this is SCHOOL!
We are in college, not grade school. I do not need career or school counseling in class. She is the worst teacher i've ever had. I'm a very good student and i got an A in her class, but i wanted to walk out everyday. She is no real help at all.
AWESOME TEACHER! STUDY THE NOTES AND NEVER READ THE BOOK, YOU WILL DEFINITELY PASS!
She is very throurough, and very clear in what he expects and explains (audibly and visually) exactly what she is going to test on. She drops questions not covered in class from the tests.Carer advise was HELPFUL to save trouble and money in 4yr School.
Very nice and approachable, I enjoyed Bio Study Skills enough that I'd love to take Bio 101 with her if she taught it more often. Gave extra points for "exceptional" work and seemed very enthusiastic to help and answer questions.
she gives you a million handouts, her tests are hard, she doesn't curve grades, she's a hard grader, but she will give you some extra credit assignments
She Rocked.
She is a very nice lady, but puts too much pressure on kids. She tells students to study 15 hours per week, which is nearly impossible with other classes. She would be better as a friend than as a teacher. Not mean, just tough.
she sucked! i was late the first day, from then on she hated me
Ms. Anderson is great! She gives out a lot of handouts but all the questions on the tests are right out of the lectures in class! She is very thorough and helpful though! She gives extra credit and is always willing to push you into succeeding! If you really want to learn biology take this teacher!!

One of the better teachers I've had for a science class
she is a little tough, but I liked her.You just need to listen to her little bit.
Very understanding and accomdating...she takes the time to explain things if you need extra help
You do have to pay attention in this class if you want to do well. She is very helpful during her office hours. You can get an A in her class but not without studying at leaast 20 hours a week. She is very intelligent, and cares that her students really understand the material.
Although her syllabus is quiet long and confusing, she's a very good teacher. Sometimes she goes kinda fast in explaining things but if you just ask her to explain it to you more, she will. She is helpful and easy going.
my favorite teacher!!!! if you think shes bad you have problems!!!!
She is the worst teacher in the world! reads directly from the powerpoint presentations that she doesn't even make. comes unprepared, doesn't have a degree, can't answer student questions, and doesn't know her material. Her voice cracks all the time and she keeps talking about all the pills she took as a child which speaks for her retardedness!! take her for a week and you'll know what i'm saying!
She expects a lot out of you such as going to the library and reading from her reserve list every week. She gives up to 20pts extra credit. Tests are not too bad but some of the questions come from readings you need to do outside of class (which rarely no one ever does). It's a lot of work!
Most boring class of my life. I spent most of the time goofing off with the guy sitting next to me. The information is thorough and explained well but if you don't pay attention you can't just follow the handouts. She expects so much outside of class work and it is a NON MAJOR bio class. Ridiculous!!
She's kind of insane. We had 6 tests in one semester, 3 of them within the last 2 weeks of school. She wants you to do all this extra work, a lot for an intro to bio class. However, I do give her credit for offering help if you need it, and her lectures are pretty straightforward, making the majority of the tests not too difficult. Just study lots!
I was very unsatisfied with this entire semester. The exams were poorly written, with marks all over them. I had to get notes from my parents about my absences... hello, this is college! She definitely wanted everyone to do well in the class, but wouldn't let my friend drop it. Kind of crazy... I don't reccommend taking this class with her.
I really like Mrs. Anderson, her personality is great and she's VERY kind to her students, but she is horribly unorganized! On the first day of class she handed us 5 different packets with more to come every week after that, and each class she touches on a million different things without clarifying any of them.
Great teacher. was very explanitory about everything. She has powerpoint presentations on everything she teaches. She wrote the lab book that COD uses so she knows it inside and out. Over all she is a great teach...Easy
Lil boring and her style of teaching is a lil out of whack...during the semester she has a million different things going on at the same time and none of it really matters. Tests are relatively easy and there is no real homework. Labs are just if you attend you get the points and then at the end there is a tough lab exam on everything...
VERY very disorganized. She has a million different things going on at once. She does seem to love the subject and has a passion for it, and that's nice... but it's still difficult when teaching styles are this disorganized.
This teacher is insanely disorganized. Her tests are terrible and don't reflect the material learned in class. I would not recommend taking this teacher.
VERY MEAN, HORRIBLE, AN IDIOT.DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH.
Mrs.Anderson is unqualified teacher. Surprised to know that COD keeps her.Does she know the subject. She has to read first and teach.
One of the best teachers I have had. She is very organized and returns tests and quizes in reasonable time. She is devoted to her work and to her students. I highly recommend her to students who take their work seriously.
She was decent. I didn't want to go to class most of times. She was very unorganized and she isn't clear all the time. She expects a lot from the students and can be pushy. If you know your stuff, the tests are easy.
She is extremely helpful if you ever need it. She offers outside of class review for exams. A very understanding and caring teacher. A few homework assignments, no labs are turned in because there is a lab exam at the end of the semester. Make sure to download the .ppts, and get the articles and you will not need your textbook. A+ Professor
She is very disorganized and doesn't start lecturing until 15 min after class starts. Labs are a waste of time she talks for 1 1/2 hours and gives 20 min to do the lab. She's very helpful if you need it and the material is not that hard to understand. There are 3 exams in the last week which equals 48% of the final grade!
Wouldnt recommend her ever! Gives three huge/hard tests in the last week of the semester to screw over all her students! Shes a witch in lab and every one is scared to ask her questions. Goes through material extremely fast and if you a few points from the next final grade she will NOT round up to the next letter grade. DONT take this teacher!
She's not that great of a teacher. She takes alot of time explaining useless crap to us, which makes her rush through powerpoints. She doesnt lecture very well. It's also really annoying, with her talking during tests.
She is very hard to follow during class and her outlines are SO unorganized!! She knows what she's talking about, but could be way boring. Don't bother buying the book, she doesn't require it. Lab book required. Rather strict, takes off points for bad attendence. Doesn't round up grades!!
always willing to help, puts time aside for you if you are having difficulties in class understanding.
she has no business teaching at a college level. she requires the book and we didn't use it once. her labs consist of counting beans and measuring dots - 2nd grade stuff really! and then you get a really hard lab exam that doesn't reflect the labs. VERY hard to follow... shes very nice, but belongs in a kindergarden classroom
3 days to review the course outline... and then we didn't even follow it... talks about stuff you don't need to hear... people have trouble rating her bad because she is very nice... but i have never had a teacher who was harder to follow
terrible teacher. hands down the worst i've had in my cod experience. 40 % of your grade is in the last 2 weeks of class. i am a high B and A student and her class was extremely hard to do well in. she is unclear on all her material and cannot flow her lectures at all. i've never written a bad review before but dont take her. you'll regret it.
Where to start, where to start. This teacher is awful at teaching. She knows her information but it gets lost in translation. Labs are pointless, as she lectures for 1.5 hours and gives you 20 minutes to actually do it. She doesn't grade labs, other than giving 5 points for being there. It was very hard to motivate myself to go everyday. Don't take.
She's an awful teacher. That's it. 47% of the grade comes down to your last 3 classes. Ridiculous. I went from a 90% to a 72% because of the last week. Lab exam doesn't reflect what we learned or did at all. Honestly, this was the worts teacher and class I have ever had. Hands down. DO NOT TAKE OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COD should be ashamed. Her authoritarian attitude and lackluster assignments destroy any motivation in students. She takes herself way too seriously, treats the class like elementary school, tries to make intimidating demands that are completely absurd, and spends most of the time explaining impertinent or obvious details. !WORST TEACHER AWARD!
Oh where to begin with mrs anderson. Well her teaching style was a little messed up. The last 2 weeks pretty much can make or break your grade. Show up to every class and take notes on everything she says and you will do just fine. She is pretty cool outside of class and never turns you away if you need help. I say take her but you need to do work!
To describe her teaching as useless and uninformative leaves no adequate terms to describe her choice for assignments The labs seemed to resemble elementary school arts and craft exercises more than biology labs. She gave very little useful input and even described that she distained whiners...must be becasue she whined the most. Stay Away!
I'm a Honors Scholar at COD. I peer tutor college students. Ms. Anderson is horrible. Lackluster, dull and dreary are all ways of describing her teaching methods. Labs do not correlate with class, syllabus, clicker quizzes or lectures. She is probably the nicest teacher I know, but she's way to hard. In two years at COD, she was my first B.
Mrs. Anderson is very unorganized. The class and tests are very hard. Most of your grade is determined in the last few weeks. I did extra credit--it didn't help.
COD should be ashamed. Her attitude and asinine assignments destroy any motivation students innately have. She takes herself way too seriously, treats the class like elementary school, and spends most of the time explaining impertinent or obvious details.
She is very easy and she gives powerpoints so you can use them on the exams and the finals is easy as well. The labs are sort of hard but other than that this is an easy class!!!!!
This lady assumes everyone in the class is a bio major, and she makes it impossible to keep up. An easy give away that she's a bad teacher is that it took us 3 1/2 class periods to get thur the syabus (sp?), and we only met 2 days a week! That means we listened to her "read" as if we wernt smart enough to read on our own for nearly 2 weeks!
REALLY HARD CLASS, BUT SHE IS VERY NICE AND GIVES LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT, SHE IS VERY KNOWELGIBLE AND CAN ANSWERE ANY QUESTIONS ONE MIGHT HAVE
Mrs. Anderson is the drill Sergent of biology. Half of the tests are not even about the text you read but about stupid stuff she cares about in biology.Half the class is her talking about turtles. She is a god awful teacher and i seriously suggest either coming to school and hour earlier or later rather then taking her class. I wish i did.
Babs is an OK teacher but there are some ambiguous instructions. She has the feel of a lady who has been teaching for WAAAY too long. She gives you the resources but 1) too much material 2)improper direction. She had too many kids in her class which creates all kinds of adolescent chaos. Plus her mannerisms are convoluted. 1 on 1 nice lady though.
She was an o.k. teacher, but could have been more helpful. Her lectures were pretty boring, including the first 3 weeks of going over the entire syllabus
Her class was really hard, Ive never worked so hard in school I have 3.8 gpa and I got a C in her class. But she was really helpful out of class, lots of extra credit which helps. best part is you can go in before the final and look at the answeres to the previous tests, all of which are on the final so you know what will be aksed and can b prepard
This class is over all pretty straight forward. do the work and you will be fine. She gives out a lot of extra credit which helps. If you miss a lot of classes your grade will suffer. Seems really intense at first but over all she is a good teacher and very nice.
Incredibly boring, monotone speaker, and she makes it hard to be interested in the class. Do not take her unless its the only biology class left.
Barb was a nice teacher but she can be tough. She does know her stuff and has been teaching for many years. There is ALOT of extra credit so that ppl can pass and alot of homework. She also allows alot of teamwork which was helpful. She is a smart lady and will help you if you help yourself. No lie, I got a C in her class but I learned alot.
Ms. Anderson is quite possibly one of the worst teachers I ever had. It took her 3 weeks to go over the syllabus and now we're so far behind and she's blaming us. I didn't learn 1 thing about Biology, she just teaches what she feels like. Lots of extra credit so it's pretty hard to fail this class. I would NOT recommend her though.
She is very nice and gives every opportunity to do well.
She is a great teacher for a not so great subject. The tests are hard, but she gives you plenty of opportunities to do well. There's extra credit feild trip and her door is always open for help. If you have to take biology make sure she's your teacher.
Mrs. Anderson was a great teacher. I took Bio 1100 I was so lost the 1st 2 weeks covering the syllabus. After that the class seemed scattered at times but I felt I learned a lot she if you make the effort to talk to her she'll help you in anything you need help with. Shes a great teacher and a good person GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! -BW
Barbara Anderson is very concerned that you succeed. If you fail this class, you simply didn't try. She is not easy, she has high standards, but she gives you very adequate help in doing your best. This is the kind of teacher you want if you have a hard time with science. Talk to her after class and visit her during office hours.
Just one word for her, "Awesome". I am a business major and taking this class was my general ed. requirement. I took this class online and did pretty well. Just follow the schedule and you'll do good. Everything is in the syllabus. Easy labs and assignments.
This teacher is a joke. The semester ended 3 weeks ago and she still hasn't graded work from February, almost 3 months ago. I have 16 assignments still not graded, thats nearly half the work for the class. Does not give you a break on anything whatsoever. Took class online, work was basic bio, not too difficult. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Mrs. Anderson knows her stuff very well. She’s a hard grader. I took her class online (summer semester). Very condensed class, a lot of assignments and labs. Everything is in the syllabus, 6 quizzes, 3 scientific site critique, 3 projects, around 12-14 labs experiments.and 2 response papers.
Mrs. Anderson knows her stuff very well. She’s a hard grader. I took her class online (summer semester). Very condensed class, a lot of assignments and labs. Everything is in the syllabus, 6 quizzes, 3 scientific site critique, 3 projects, around 12-14 labs experiments, and 2 responsive papers.
She is so unclear about everything and she expects you to read the whole lab book before lab. She doesn't teach and gets mad when we don't understand and takes no questions. I would not recommend her to my worst enemies.
This teacher took 5 weeks to start teaching us about the class because class kept getting canceled or she talked about the syllabus and eagles. About 2 weeks after we actually started to kinda learn something we had a test, which was kind of hard. Majority of the learning you do yourself. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I took this class online and as others have said there is a lot of assignments and they are very repetitive. Its a challenge to work a job and keep up with her class. She does not grade things in a timely matter. (I'm a week from the class being over and still am waiting on over half my assignments to be graded). DO NOT TAKE
Took BIO1100 over the summer and online. It was an extremely fast paced class. Prof Anderson was great to work with. If you are working and dont want to work hard, then dont take it in the summer. Take it over the 16 weeks. No issues at all. Great Prof to work with.
Textbook / curriculum are not synced well - new book used Forget having an e-mail or question addressed in a timely fashion Grading of material is sorely lacking - semester ended and I have very little of anything graded from the second 1/2 You need to read and apply yourself and have good organization to do well in this class. Teach is overworked
Took this class online during the fall semester. The overall work is what you would expect for a 4 credit hour class. The work is confusing especially the labs tests are ok. The submission times make no sense, there was an 8AM, Noon, and midnight submission times so you had to be pretty much on top of knowing your due dates. She is a fair grader.
She gave many assignments out at the same time so it was a bit hard to keep track of everything. Also, you need the textbook because there is a code on the back that gives you access to the online assignments. DON'T BUY A USED BOOK because I did but the code was used so I had to buy a code online (which was expensive).
The class I took was 4 credit hours but she acted like it was more than that! I feel like I cannot keep up or, if I am following, I will get lost because you cannot read her handwriting, you miss something because she talks over videos she shows you or just because she is a fast paced teacher. But she is nice and seems like a good person.
Took her Biology 1100 class. One of the most boring teachers that I've ever had.. Gives assignments that have nothing to do with the chapter that we are on. Would NOT recommend taking her if you have another choice.
Not a good online instructor. Was MIA all semester. Maybe she is better in person.
She is very interested in the subject and a decent teacher. She can be extremely confusing! However, there is a lot of extra credit opportunities.
A fast paced professor, will let you know all assignments due in the next two weeks which can be overwhelming. She really is passionate and very knowledgable about the subject and at times can seem rude, but I think she just gets stressed (seems very busy). But her heart is in the right place and she does care about her students. Great Prof.
She may have a lot of other classes, but it appears that she neglects her online sections. Emails sent during her "virtual office hours" were not returned until the deadline was long gone. I asked for an extension on an assignment because her announcements and syllabus conflicted. She responded days later with a deadline extension of only a few hrs
I had her for bio1100. Her class is very overwhelming, hard to keep up due to the amount of homework she assigns. She add points to the class when she feels there's not enough participation. Gives a clicker test before every class and the clickers doesn't work half the time and she's like oh well guess you missed out on the points for that day.
She isn't helpful at all, and she figures out how to make an introductory biology class as hard as possible. She is very unclear as to when everything is due and doesn't like when students ask questions; she makes you feel bad in front of the whole class. Would strongly not recommend
Her class was amazing. She offers plenty of extra credit opportunists that get you a really easy "A." The lab clicker she gives out is free test questions, too. She is also very incredibly passionate about Biology itself, so it is nice to listen to. I think that COD gave her a few too many lectures this semester so she is overwhelmed with work.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. The class is over and I still haven't received grades for assignments that were due before midterm that's how far behind grading she is. She is unresponsive and will take several days to respond to your emails. She does not hold herself accountable for her poor quality and will make excuses.
Coming to class is just a review of what you've already read. It's solely on you to ask questions if something is unclear from her expectations. it's rare that she actually teaches the class. Anderson is organized and best at giving extra credit. I recommend grouping with a classmate or going to the learning center for help. Not good nor good.
Barb is really nice if you get to know her and talk to her during lab. The schedule for class is in your syllabus, but is unclear. She assumes you know some of the information already. My girlfriend and I took the class together and we both agree that she would be better for a higher level class where you know the material already.
Very passionate about what she does & is admirable. You really have to pay attention to what is due when, because there is a lot of work to be done in this class. If you listen & care, you should do a great job. She offers lots of extra credit and her tests are very fair except you have a lot in the last few weeks. Just wants you to succeed.
I took this class as a graduation requirement. This is honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She is not understanding of her students. I normally do not write about teachers but I had to for this one because it was a bad experience. I got an A in the class but it was still horrible. She is also very rude to her students. Don't take
Two separate tests the week before the final worth 350+ points (total of 600 until this point). She assigns piles of homework; the first 20+ minutes of class are spent announcing what is due coming up. I'm a straight A student worried about passing an intro bio course because of this. Avoid her at all costs, honestly.
I took this professor for an online course and found the assignments and labs were straightforward, I did not find anything to be particularly difficult. If you keep track of due dates you will have no problem getting an A this course. I missed a few assignments and still got an A. I had no interaction with the prof but that was my choice.
Professor Anderson definitely makes you work for your grade. I ended up with a B in the class. There's many opportunities for extra credit so definitely take them. She's a tough grader but not unfair. The class wasn't terrible but she jumps into lectures expecting you to already know what she's talking about. She's not very approachable.
She is super harsh and has said that we were disaapointments when we refused to print 20 page lecture guides that weren't actually necessary.
Very fast paced class. It was difficult to prepare for tests. most of the time I wasn't sure what topic we were on because she was always talking about many other things. In labs, I felt I had no motivation to do any of it because it was worth nothing. Lab exam was ridiculous and hard to prepare for.
Professor Anderson is a great teacher who cares about her students and is very easy to reach, even from out of state. This class is not an easy A, however. There are many deadlines, projects, labs, and tests. You must have self discipline. I had to work hard and put in a lot of effort to get an A. She's tough but fair and I learned a lot.
Hated the class and her teaching style. Assigns so many things for you to do AND extra random thinsg she dosnt even grade. You will print 20 page handouts she checks for points. Homework was never clear, no motivation to do anything in her class. Cant read her messy writing. Shes passionate about science for sure but I wish I dropped.
She makes us watch bird videos ...
I took her class because I needed the credit and there were not other options. This was definitely a mistake. Her rate my professor is too high in my opinion. She makes students print out handouts up to 20 pages per handout. She also really needs to update or keep an updated syllabus it is very hard to keep up with her work. Wouldn't recommend.
Not very clear on some projects we had to do. It is hard to hear back from her emails and frustrating when you have questions and she defers them to someone else. I have taken many online classes, and this one just felt disorganized. Not a good experience, but the class was mandatory, at least its over now.
She is passionate and nice. She gives a lot of extra credit and tries to give people the best chance to pass. But other than that she has ridiculously long handouts and so many assignments that need to be printed. It makes it quite disorganized. Her way of lecturing is not optimal for a intro life science course with lots of info.
Professor Anderson is very knowledgeable when it comes to science but can be extremely hard to approach. It is easy to get points if you study hard and do the work but the problem is she thinks this is the only class her students are taking which is unrealistic. I struggled a lot with balancing classes because this class took up so much of my time.
This class is so unorganized its ridiculous. You never know what is due when, or where to find it. There's a lot you have to do outside class, including field studies, printing packets (up to 20 pages). It is a confusing class because it is all over the place.
This class was very fast paced and unorganized. Be prepared for service learning projects, lecture/lab clickers, and difficult exams.
Knowledgeable but unorganized. Tough grader. Not generous at all. Doesnt post on blackboard. Cant read handwriting. You approach her in class she replies with "What do you want". Gives you huge assignments on launchpad the night before every test. You have to spend an extra $150 on the book, launchpad and the clicker. Dont take this teacher
I can appreciate a teacher that clearly cares about the subject she teaches. What I don't appreciate is a teacher that takes a 100 level class that's required for most majors, and turns it into something that feels like a graduate level course. The workload is absurd, and the subject matter is worthless. Avoid at all costs.
She's very quiet talker makes it hard to listen during lectures. Amount of homework and printing things out for points is just ridiculous. Her handwriting is unreadable. She make us watching bird videos is just waste of my study time. She said service learning is mandatory but I think should be optional for the people are not majoring in science.
For a class thats a REQUIREMENT, this teacher is utterly ridiculous. I had to work my butt off. She requires so much, you have to buy and print so many things for her, and she is so confusing its crazy. Extremely unorganized. Don't take this class if you have 3 other classes. I gotta give it to her tho, shes very passionate about biology and eagles

She requires so much, you have to buy and print so many things for her, and she is so confusing its crazy. Extremely unorganized. Don't take this class if you have 3 other classes. I gotta give it to her tho, she really loves biology and eagles!
Now I am not a good student at all, nor good at school. And Prof Anderson didnt really help with the amount of workload she gave us. But I would be crazy if I said she isnt one of the most honest and appreciative professors I've ever had. She will do what it takes to help anyone succeed, and she is passionate in anything that she does. Take her!
This is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had in college, she likes to post 5+ homework assignments a week and doesn't give specifics on how to complete the assignments or when they are due exactly. Over half of my class is currently failing. She gave me a zero on an assignment due october 13th on october 12th. DO NOT TAKE!!! would give 0/5
Whatever you do, do not take a class with this professor. You will get lost in her unclear instructions and immense busy work. She is SO confusing. You have to show up to know what to do otherwise you won't be able to complete the assignments. Extra credit is offered but it isn't much.
She knows her stuff really well, but she was all over the place. You had to print almost everything. She always seemed mad at life and like she didn't want to be there. She gave off a negative connotation. Get a tutor for the labs if you get stuck on those! A lot of her class was busy work.
I am a good student in school and I understand the material I usually learn but I have felt like Professor Anderson didn't switch to remote learning very well because there is so much work that would be better in person.
She's rude when you ask questions, and trust me you'll ask questions, because you won't be able to find ANYTHING in her 20+ folders. She grades VERY critically. I'm a good student and I struggled to keep up with the confusing due dates. Only redeemer is that she offers a lot of ex cred, about +9.5% overall letter grade. Be prepared for LOTS of hw
This professor is the single worst teacher I've had in my entire schooling existence and I'm a junior in college. I know that its probably difficult to switch from in person to online, but she is the most unorganized teacher I've had. The assignment table in the syllabus is inaccurate, and all assignments require you to take pictures to submit.
Rigid and doesn't accept feedback. Assignments are too many, tedious, repetitive and a lot of work. Challenging to find what assignments are due, where those assignments are posted, and when they are due. Even if you do great work, she won't accept even a minute late submissions. Easy class but an extremely difficult teacher. Avoid taking her.
Do. Not. Take. This. Teacher. The last few reviews are indicative enough. They reflect just a few of the many reasons why you should be avoiding this teacher.
Honestly, the only reason why I passed this class is because I did the homework, MAKE SURE TO DO IT!!!!! Hard professor to have and difficult material to grasp.
