Excellent prof, lectures are very clear and interesting.
no need to take notes- just sit back a listen
Excellent lecturer; enjoys feedback and presentations from students
Very Interesting Class
Very very good course. Excellent lecturer, and well planned classes
Fantastic Professor! Very interesting, very helpful, very well prepared
AWESOME!!! Best ever!!!!

She is the best, very clear, awesome lectures
her notes r too brief, need to EXPAND on them a lot on ur own during exams
fence sitter! Elementary school style learning...
Very clear, awesome lectures, the best!
notes don't make any sense...wouldn't want to be in her class again

don't like the way she lectures

I love her teaching style.
Great professor. Her lectures are interesting, clear and informative.
Best professor I've ever had. Informative, helpful, clear, just great!
Clearly someone of status.

class was interesting but i found there was so much background information i had to know..couldn't keep up that way...discussion groups were a pain
Great Prof. Sometimes too informative in lectures. Too much material for one three credit class. Hard marking.
Awesome person, knows a lot about her field, is involved in public policy outside the University. Wouldn't take the course with anyone else. Tells you exactly what she expects on exams, but the exams are not easy.
uses Powerpoint for lectures, with alot of information. As said, marking is quite difficult. All in all, a nice person and very clear presentations. She commands alot of respect from almost all students, classes are regularly full.
Not too hard, very nice and interesting lectures. Feminist Spin.
She is one hottie.
Very helpful, extremely knowledgeable.. and good-looking.
Very, boring. Had no opinions whatsoever. I like a teacher with an opinion, something to say.
Her focus is on THEORY, so the applied element is weak. If feminist theory is your interest however, she is quite comprehensive.
Great Prof! So helpful... Her approach to theory is not for everyone, but she is open to criticism and opinions.

She is the perfect professor - engaging, challenging, and brilliant. Her course is well organized and executed. She provides a lot of resources and assistance - she responds to your questions and makes office visits intellectually worth while. Just great!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ive seen some bad teachers but few have the skill that she has at completely discouraging students. Before her class i thought i might want to major in poli sci, now i just wish im still alive after the lectures finish because of comp[lete and utter boredom
Oh my God, her tests are so hard -- so many names and books to remember. Exam questions are ultra-specific; you need to know every little detail of everything. Sure, her lectures are entertaining but the difficulty of her course is the ultimate trade-off for that.
Arneil is truly a great prof. I highly reccomend POLI 100 with her. Not only does she present the material in a straightforward way, but she truly knows what she is talking about and answers questions from the class without pause. Interesting lectures. Exams appear simple but present a challenge.
She is the most interesting person on campus, and teaches the only class I ever actually want to go to.
Too many definitions and too much vague theory. The class becomes interesting when she shows video clips and discusses real issues, but that is only a few minutes every class. Her answers to questions aren't always useful.
Oh man, HER EXAMS ARE SO HARD! Trust me I had to study about 10 hours for each to get decent marks. Be prepared to study your butt off if you want a good mark, and beware she is a hard core feminist.
DONT DO IT! Her exams are extremely difficult, although her lectures are OK, it's just not worth it unless you want to lower your GPA. I'm not kidding- you will regret it if you take her class!
She is one of te best profs on campus! Her lectures are very well organized and her exam and paper expectaons are VERY clear. The class is also interesting. It is true that you have to study hard, but if you review her lecture notes well you will receive good grades. I highly recommend this clas
I never thought i'd enjoy this course, but somehow she kept me awake during her lectures. Really well organized, energetic, and puts her personal spin on the lectures.
Great teacher, really puts the effort into creating an interesting and insightful course.
I have no idea why some people are saying her exams are hard... She tells you -exactly- what she expects of you and what you need to know. Her lectures are OK, can get a little boring towards the end of the course since it is quite repetitive...
I don't really understand how so many people can like her. She really adds nothing to the course. She's competant, but her lectures are almost always boring. I was originally expecting this to be far more interesting than 101, but she did a very poor job holding my interest. She is very clear when it comes to the exams, though, which is nice.
Lectures were informative, but dull. Reading straight from her notes alot of the time. Her expectations were clear and exams were fair. I really enjoyed political theory, but I was not feeling her teaching style.
I greatly appreciated this class because of Dr. Arneil. She is constantly lively and thus a pleasure to listen to. Her passion for Women's Studies is clearly evident throughout the course, and you make appreciate this or no. The exams were fair. She is very approachale, both outside of class and inside. I definitely recommend her as a professor.
While the first half the class is mainly covered by introductions to subjects, the post-modern section is extremely interesting and engaging. The midterm was extremely easy and the final was fair. The class is enjoyable to go to if you have any interest in political science. Her knowledge base on the subjects is very impressive (as it should be).
She was ok...I've had better political science prof's in the past. Lectures can be somewhat boring. I did like that her expectations were CLEAR! Midterm/final were fair. Make sure you get a good ta though because they mark all your work!
She was ok...I've had better political science prof's in the past. Lectures can be somewhat boring. I did like that her expectations were CLEAR! Midterm/final were fair. Make sure you get a good ta though because they mark all your work!
I am honestly thankful that I took her class, I strongly encourage anyone interested in political science to take this class. The marking was extremely fair, and Dr Arneil is an amazing lecturer.
Amazing Professor! She is an excellent lecturer. She really knows her stuff and has the ability to make it fascinating. Her expectations are perfectly clear, and there is no bureaucratic trickery etc. She is approachable and friendly. You can easily pass, as long as you attend the lectures. I highly recommend taking any class she teaches.
I enjoyed this class. The lectures were interesting and well-paced. I found the discussions to be a little useless and I didn't even crack open my textbook; exams (which are fair) are pulled directly from the notes.
........ horrible class
She is AWESOME! take this class! not only does she make it interesting and relevant, its super easy. all lecture notes are on powerpoints and put up on the web, no use in going to lectures, but lectures ARE interesting! midterm easy, MC, papers not long only 8 pgs. very fun and easy, awesome prof.
Overall a really good professor. Her grading is fair and the work is reasonably difficult. Also she has a passion for what she teaches which is a plus. However she is a bit boring during her lectures. Overall she's a very good professor.
Loved her class!
This class was great! I learned lots of enjoyed doing so. Marks were fair and she made sure to tell students what topics to study for. The midterm was multiple choice (it had a lot of dates on it) and the final was essay based. The midterm essay was 8-10 pages.
Great professor! She is passionate about what she teaches. I wasn't excited about this course but she has insights that are really fascinating. A lot of dates and picky questions on m.c. midterm. The questions for the paper were interesting and challenging. Puts lecture notes online but is v interesting so you should go. Take this class!
Barbara is a great professor! Very organized, very passionate about what she teaches, able to add her own insight and open to questions. A lot of your mark depends on TA though. Midterm was fair - remember your dates and names! Final exam is very fair. I'd love to take another class with her.
Very clear and interesting, very passionate for her work. If you work hard, it is not too hard to get a "good" mark
Course material dry. Prof does semi-ok job of teaching it. All powerpoints. Didn't really need to read textbook. Come to class- or catch up later :( Midterm really easy. Term paper semi easy with a good TA. Arneil is satisfactory not amazing. Not inspiring but adequate. Was sometimes painful, sometimes interesting. Take this class- won't kill you.
Good teacher. Very helpful if you go talk to her and can be accommodating if you have a legit excuse for a conflict with exam. 1 Mid term, as long as you study and know all the key terms which she outlines you will do well. Final had many topics to pick from for short and long essay. Posts notes online but they're not very detailed so go to class.
Lectures were very interesting although a bit dense. Very organized. Can be boring or eye-opening. Despite it being sometimes difficult to understand the whole whack of material she throws at you, her powerpoint slides make it easy to follow and take notes. She herself is friendly and helpful.
this is the most boring class you could ever take. prior to class i did not know much about poli sci so i decided to check it out. well let's just say that i wouldn't go back.
Dr. Arneil is very laid back for this first year course, and what she teaches is very straight-forward. Should not be hard to get an A. Midterm and Final were also easy: study the dates/names/significance of each Key Concept she gives (focus on lectures, not so much text) and you'll do great. Toughest part was the term paper- don't procrastinate!
Prof Arneil is extremely passionate and does a great job teaching. There's a lot to learn and it's easy to be overwhelmed by the dense material and doze off, but her important concept sheet is extremely helpful. Read the book, pay attention in lectures and you'll get an A. Essay wasn't impossible but don't procrastinate. Very open to questions.
She's super cool and a great teacher. Makes classes interactive and fun.
Amazing prof! It's an interesting subject in itself, but even the dry chapters aren't so bad with her teaching them. She keeps you engaged with videos, mini quizzes and group discussions during lectures. My favourite class this term, she's insightful and has a great sense of humour. LOTS of material and names to know, so make sure you study.
I really love her class. All her notes are posted online but her lectures are interesting and worth going to. The syllabus lays everything out, and the outline for the paper is really thorough. Really good place to start if you're not sure how you feel about Poli Sci.
Arneil is the best. 100 is an introductory course and very basic, but she made it really interesting (only ditched one lecture). 1 multiple choice midterm, 1 term paper, and a final exam. Definitely need to put some work in if you want a good grade (A/B), but very clear guidelines.
I can honestly say that if you ever get a chance to take a class or attend a lecture with her you HAVE Too. A life changing professor with a sharp intellect and witty humor she makes political science alot of fun.
Good course to see if you are interested in poli. Barbara was very professional but sometimes dull. Really knows her stuff and tries to make it more interesting with videos and polls. Midterm is easy but picky. Final was fair but you need to study. Paper was most difficult so don't leave to last minute. Posts lectures but are basic so go to class
Dr. Arneil is a truly inspirational and brilliant professor who cares about her students. Near the beginning of the course, she asked us about things to improve/add to her class and implemented them into her lectures. If you have the chance to take one of her courses, absolutely take it--she brings a lot of energy to the subject of polisci.
Dr. Arneil was the highlight of my online term. She is knowledgeable and makes content interesting and applicable. About 1/3 of the way through the term she asked for our feedback on how the online course was going so far and made a new plan going forward based on our responses. You can tell that she really cares about her students.
the best part of my online semester without a doubt. cares about her student's wellbeing and mental health and has adjusted the workload accordingly. seems really passionate about what she's teaching which really helped me to stay engaged in course materials. would take another course taught by her again.
She's an amazing prof who really knows her stuff, though her lectures get a little boring. She really tries to make it more interactive though which I appreciate, this is just a personal choice. The main paper is the hardest part, but overall a great course
Dr. Arneil adapted her class incredibly well to online learning, taking a break partway through and keeping students engaged with polls and breakout rooms. She was also quick to reply to emails and very accessible outside of class. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Arneil was such an incredible professor!! She took feedback from students throughout the semester and even implemented breaks midway through lectures as a result of this feedback. She is clearly passionate about her job and cares about the well-being and success of her students. I cannot recommend her enough.
Professor Arneil is such a gem! Her lectures were engaging and very interesting, but also easy to follow. She genuinely cares about her students, and is extremely responsive to feedback on how the course is going. If you can, take a class with her and you will not regret it!
Barbara is a great prof! She made the course more enjoyable. Nothing else to say other than to that you should take any class you possibly can with her.
Smart/kind/caring. But if you're not a die hard political junkie, polisci isn't for you. Even as an intro course it was kinda assumed that we were all experts in politics (because they're big things going on in the world... not that everyone cares)... also for the exams ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS THE TERMS/CONCEPTS SO GET NOTES JUST ON THOSE
You won't build an interest in politics here. It's either reinforced or more likely shattered. If you find yourself stuck here, take advantage of the terms/concepts list. Copy the slides (if it's still posted), briefly do the readings, and catch a few friends (although that's hard to find in a political environment). One more thing... PRAY TO GOD.
Not bad, not outstanding either. The course itself is painful and heavy and political... I dont like politics. Studying politics in university... only for those who have a passion for it. Otherwise dont waste your money here. Anyways, you have to memorize a LOT of terms/concepts and apply them to real life. They assume you know everything
Best Prof. I had my first year at UBC. She is articulate and very well-versed with politics. I could reach out to her even when I had a pretty major time-zone difference. Poli-sci requires a fair amount of critical thinking, you're better off with STEM courses if you can't articulate your own thoughts, don't criticize the professor.
Dr. Arneil's lectures are genuinely brilliant and so engaging. The course is of a reasonable difficulty and introduces politics well: it is not the professor's fault if you do not enjoy politics, but your own if you purposely chose to take a politics course. Like any university course, you are expected to know the course content by its end.
She's a great prof for an introductory course to political science because you get a little bit of everything. For the midterm and final exam, you only have to know concepts off of a list she gave at the beginning of the term.
Dr. Arneil is an excellent professor, her lectures are very interesting, best thing about her overall is that she is very accommodating of students' needs, during these online lectures due to pandemic she allowed us a water break during class, and personally when I had an internet outage during a midterm she was very understanding and considerate.
Prof Arneil is a great lecturer. Really experienced and organized!
Intro to politics - sm ways to carry out, I liked how Barbara did it. Solid 3.5/5, cant give halves tho. Class is as simple as filling in a vocab list from lectures/readings. Only pain was the final exam, applying it to real life. Also u have to do one debate during discussions. Love politics? Take this class :) U dont? Then don't
Prof Arneil was a great lecturer and seemed to genuinely care about her students. The course was graded based on a few things, but if you put the time in to study, it is possible to do well.
Professor Arneil's lectures may seem boring, but she really puts lots of effort into her class and slides to make sure we understand the content - she is also very accommodating to her student' situations. She was also super clear in her expectations and grading criteria for assignments and exams, which made them really easy to prepare for.
She is a great Prof
Did a good job introducing concepts for intro poli-sci students but lectures were kinda boring. Not a bad prof but could be more engaging.
Very nice prof! Also, gives a vocab list, just need to define words from lecture and readings, saves study time. On the downside, not so exciting, debates, discussions, and exam essays require too much outside knowledge that couldn't be covered in class or outside in that term. Take if you're PASSIONATE in politics/events, not as an elective
I would definitely recommend Professor Arneil for POLI 100. As an engineering student, I was obviously nervous about taking any arts humanities electives (lol), but her course structure is really flexible and relaxed. There are minimal assignments for grades (short debate, paper, midterm, and final), so low workload and readings aren't necessary.
Good Prof, lectures are a bit dry but she cares about her students. TAs mark most of your stuff otherwise. All around good class, if you aren't interested in the material outside of class you won't love this class though.
Arneil is good at explaining concepts, and I actually enjoyed her lectures. You can tell she is very intelligent and knowledgeable about political science. However, the midterm is heavy on memorizing authors and less on actual concepts. The essay honestly isn't bad if you copy the format of the example essays, and the discussions are interesting
Prof. Arneil is a wonderful instructor. She's very caring and understanding if you have any issues, and is flexible if you need more time on assignments. Her online sections are also very flexible because of recorded lectures and the class material is also very interesting. Her teaching style makes it v easy to take notes and remember the content
hands down best first year prof ive had so far! she provides you a list of ideas she expects you to know, and the midterm, essay, and final are based on that list. her course is lecture heavy, and i would say you prob need to be politically aware to enjoy the class so if you are good with both, you will LOVE this course!
Dr. Arneil is a great professor whose genuine passion for politics shows through her teaching. She is incredibly empathetic and is always willing to put her students first. The lectures were more focused on theories and concepts (which can be a bit boring) but the discussion sessions discuss those lecture topics in the context of current events.
Dr. Arneil is an amazing professor. HOWEVER, if you are not into politics, this class will be very hard to sit through. The list of key concepts is all you need to know for exams, discussion groups were fun as well.
Prof Arneil is great, my favorite first-year prof. Provides a list of concepts to study for the final exam and is always mindful of the wellbeing of students both inside and outside the classroom. This course is theory-heavy and is sometimes hard to sit through but overall is a great introduction to the study of politics, highly recommend
A bit overrated imo. All material is heavily based on ancient theories (the obsession with Plato drives me insane) and then we're expected to apply without any help, she assumes too much prior knowledge for an intro class. Luckily, my TA marked generously b/c what Barbara assigned and would've expected isnt reasonable. Not a good intro to politics
Professor Arneil does a good job at being able to listen and adapt the course to her student's needs, especially in an online setting. Her lectures are very heavy in content and can be confusing, but she clarifies concepts fairly well. Make sure you pay attention to the little things she mentions in lectures (people, books, dates, etc.)!!
Dr. Arneil is an excellent professor. She's very organized, flexible and a great lecturer. It is very important to attend your discussion groups because your TA's are grading 60% of your entire grade. In regards to lectures, you don't need to attend them as she provides livestreams and recordings. Personally, I preferred attending class in person!
Personally, I found her incredibly boring online. It may be a better class to take in-person or possibly entry-level political science is just not fun. The motivation to actually go to the live lecture was practically non-existant for me. The course material is relatively east though. I was able to do very well with little time spent.
Loved her lectures! Very interesting class and I really enjoyed it.
Easily the best prof at UBC. Cannot imagine taking POLI 100 with anyone else. She cares about students & their feedbacks on her teaching & lecture structure and incorporates the changes asked for. She is extremely caring and nice. Although the course is content heavy, she makes it easy by giving a list of concepts and that’s all you need to know
Dr. Arneil is a really great choice for POLI100. She is very knowledgeable and it is clear that she is very thoughtful and cares about the students taking the course. Although there is a lot of content she makes it manageable by providing a list of terms and concepts that will be on the exams. Just study with that and you'll be ok.
She is extremely caring and very clear when explaining material. I snoozed a little during the lectures but it does not take away from the fact if you need a POLI 100 prof, she is your go-to.
Dr Arneil is a great prof, highly intelligent and professional. Posts the slides online but it's best to attend lectures to fully understand. Must read textbook. Not the kind of class you can put off. She is quite inspiring.
She was pretty good idk class was aight. She is pretty good at lecturing but I'm not listening most of the time anyways so it doesn't really matter. Pretty good with the class participation though be prepared to sit in a class with sweaty greasy losers who have questionable morals and political viewpoints. Other than that solid teacher.
I found her lectures extremely boring. This course was entirely theory-based, as Dr. Arneil is a political theorist. The majority of your grade is based on knowing the key terms, which she provides a list of at the start of the term. She is obviously experienced and cares about the philosophy of politics, but the lectures and exams are awful.
Dr Arneil is a very kind and intelligent prof, with lots of experience and passion for political science. I thought there was way too much content. Lectures seemed to last for hours. So many thinkers to know. The essay was really fun to write, and TAs are fantastic. Tutorial debates were also fun
Dr.Arneil is so kind and the most caring prof I've had so far.Definitely taking classes with her again. That said, lectures aren't recorded so you really need to attend! She provides a list of names and events to know for exams, which is very helpful. The course really picks up after MT quiz so make sure you keep up! Discussions were pretty fun too!
Dr. Arneil is a really great professor! She was very understanding, kind, and accommodating. The course seemed daunting with the amount of material to cover, but Dr. Arneil explained all the concepts clearly and in an engaging way. Grading was also fair and she provided helpful resources for studying and essay writing.
Lots of experience. Answers questions well and prepares well for exams. Covers interesting topics and focuses on current events. Exams are simple enough-midterm was multiple choice-final was short answer and essay but quite heavily weighted. Paper was exciting and well explained. Debates in discussions are easy grade boosters. Good for intro course
Dr. Arneil was the perfect balance of assertiveness but helpfulness. She was extremely knowledgable and the lectures were designed in a way that prepared me well for the midterm and final exam. The lectures were engaging and also included real-life examples which was helpful. She was a great professor to have in my first year!
The provided key concepts guide is helpful for studying. Being able to apply and connect ideas discussed in lectures and readings will help for the final exam. Participation in your discussion group is important, and your essay and debate is TA graded. MC midterm can have some detailed questions but wasn't too bad.
I don't like poli sci so I didn't like the class, but Barbara is so kind and caring!
Awesome prof! The class was so interesting and she is a great teacher.
I LOVE PROFESSOR ARNIEL!!!!! Best class at UBC for sure. She is such a good prof, her slides are so well made, and I loved how she organized the discussion section activities and grading! Would recommend :)
dont take her class
Dr. Arneil is a great prof! If you're taking POLI 100 TAKE IT WITH HER!! She may not talk a lot about the textbook or assigned readings but they will appear in exams. There are not many assignments in the course just a debate in discussion groups, midterm quiz, final paper, and final exam.
Dr. Arneil is WONDERFUL! I would recommend talking with her after the lecture cause she is very thoughtful and a delight to talk to. She also gives two-minute breaks during her lectures and is a very interactive lecturer. The TA I had for her class (Eylul) was very amazing and helped a lot with preparing and studying for the midterm and final!
Barbara is an engaging prof who makes the course material interesting. The lectures and discussion sections are well-structured, and the assessment tools like the concept guide help with studying. unstuckstudy was a great supplement for exam prep.
Extremely good professor who puts teaching at the forefront of everything. Lectures and slides are easy to follow and take notes on. Tests are straightforward and not terribly hard if you follow the lectures. Amazing professor of an amazing class, especially for those who just want a taste of what studying politics might be like (like me).
Dr. Arneil is an incredible prof. She is very clear and organized. Her lectures are very engaging.
Barbara is such a kind and caring prof. However, she focuses too much on history (for my liking), which she even says herself as it's what interests her the most. Class has a very low workload, though discussion participation and attendance is mandatory and graded.
super nice prof. depends on TA's marking style
Arneil is a great prof. She makes what can sometimes being boring subjects and makes them interesting, you can tell her students genuinely like her. She makes the extra effort and it showed. There were lots of resources available to help study for midterm and finals. If you put the work into this class you will do well.
Awesome professor, I really looked forward to Dr. Arneil's lectures each week. It's extremely clear with what the content was for the midterm/final. The lectures are quite content heavy but in a really fun way imo! The class really expanded my worldview, I'd recommend it highly. Basically never used the textbook, u don't really need it.
A very caring prof, straight forward final wasn't super hard. My only thing is that she focuses a lot about history as she is a historian, which is something I personally don't find interesting. Other than that she is a great prof and I do recommend taking her class.
Amazing prof! She was very accommodating with my disability. Her lectures were engaging and she loved to help whenever she could. Clear instructions on what to study. Grade was mostly composed of a midterm, an essay, and a final. She also makes/ posts practice questions which is very helpful.
Dr. Arneil is awesome! She has the ability to cover lots of variety in course content and breaks it down in a way that anyone can understand. Despite this being a POLI course, she is open minded and (in my experience) the TA's are fair markers. It's evident Dr. Arneil really cares about her students and wants them to do well! 5/5 prof. for sure!
Lecture's are pretty good, she make's it very clear what she wants to see from us for the final.
Dr. Arneil is tremendously knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about teaching. She provides a great foundation for understanding politics in this class. Highly recommend!
Arneil is one of the best lecturers at UBC. She is engaging, her slides are viewable before and after the lecture, and she is always happy to chat during office hours. If you're unsure about this class, take it! You won't regret it
The GOAT. TA's marked hard tho, especially for the final.
Dr. Arneil is one of my favorite profs in UBC. She's experienced, takes feedback seriously, and has interesting lectures. The midterm was MCQ and the final was surprisingly easy... I only did half of the readings but I still got a good grade! She gives a list of key concepts for the exams so u know what to study
Caring, clear and concise. Lectures a bit dry. Readings are quite long. But Professor Arneil provides a list of key concepts that makes studying much easier. Grading fair: tutorial participation, an essay, midterm (multiple choice), final (short answer + essay)
Lectures were a bit boring at times but overall a good prof. I would definitely take another course with her.
