Pretty nice professor. Lectures were often boring but she was very very lenient on grading for papers. Overall....pretty easy class.
Great Professor! Cares a lot about students! Engaging with the course material! Show up and do your work=get a good grade! She is GREAT!
This is a wonderful professor who is super intelligent! Sometimes her lectures do get a little boring but for the most part, the whole class talks! Easy grader! A+
She's nice and her class is easy if you actually do the extra credit, which give you 5% of total grade bump. I didn't do that, so ended up with a B.
She is fantastic! Probably my favorite professor I've had at Berkeley. Grading is easy if you do all the work and read for the most part. Lecture is very interesting if you participate, which is a good idea anyways because participation is a significant portion of your grade.
I love Professor Barnes. She encourages class discussion and is open to everyone's opinions. She made me think of things I wouldn't have otherwise. Her grading is fair and probably on the generous side, but it's because she makes it clear what she wants and how you should go about midterms and papers. Definitely recommend.
she does give a generous amount of A's, but just to remind everybody, she's actually not the one who grades the midterms, well not this year for my class anyway, we have two readers who read them and grades them. extra credit work is a must-do!
Good material to engage our class in critical voices and prominent theorists, and in the process, is teaching us all to look at mass-produced visual representations in a bigger way. Her lectures inspiring and fully engaging. She is also conscientious, she responded to our midterm evaluation and is adjusting aspects of class to suit us better
Great professor! Its obvious that she knows her stuff. Lots of reading but if you pay attention its easy to catch up on what you missed. All the concepts are extremely useful in other classes too. If you want an A the key is CITE EVERYTHING POSSIBLE and take advantage of extra credit opportunities. I did this and have an A+ in the class
Prof Barnes is the****, the person below me got it spot on: the concepts learned are brought up and manifested in SO MANY of your other classes. grade consists of participation, quizzes, 1 MT, 1 Final. VERY manageable. She facilitates class discussions very well. take this class!
Great professor! Lectures were very interesting, she knows what she is talking about, and she is so open to everyone's opinions. Pretty easy to get an A if you do the work; easy pop quizzes if you do the reading, gave out the midterm questions before the midterm, and a take-home essay final. I had an amazing GSI too, which helped :)
She was very interesting and gave an amazing overview of everything that GWS has to offer as a major. I definitely suggest taking GWS 10 with her, she's fun, insightful, and probably the nicest professor you'll have at Cal. I'm planning on minoring in GWS now :) As far as the quizzes go, just do the reading, it's interesting stuff usually.
Barbara Barnes is AMAZING. Cares a lot about the students, very engaging and interesting, always eager to help. I took GWS20 and 100AC with her. Grading is generous, although 100AC was huge so most grading was done by readers. Visit her during office hours--so helpful and nice to chat with. Take any class with her, highly recommended!!
This class wasn't too bad, although if youre just trying out GWS, then i would suggest taking GWS14 or 10 instead. The reading is kind of dense and bothersome, but testing was fair. easy easy pop quizzes, a take home final and midterm. Lecture can be boring, but Barnes is super nice and knows her stuff. Overall I'm glad I took the course.
Nice lady but definitely not the best lecturer. Her class was super easy though and got an A doing basically 6 days of work throughout the semester. Everything that counts for a grade is done at home but 4 absences in lecture hurts your grade. Barely did the readings, or even all the extra credit
Easy class. She talks a lot and goes on and on about the readings. She can be funny at times. Overall, she is a nice lady and easy to pass if you do all the readings
Professor Barnes is extremely passionate about Gender and Women's Studies which made the class interesting and fun! She keeps students engaged in her lectures and makes sure everyone understands the material. Professor Barnes is amazing and I definitely recommend taking this class!
Professor Barnes is very friendly, and passionate about GWS. The class is not hard as long as you set aside time to keep up with the readings. Midterm and final were both essays, so if you like writing, you will do well. I recommend this class!
Charisma is important in lecturers, and Prof. Barnes excels in that department. Introductory course was appropriately easy; coursework and readings were very manageable, midterm was take home, final was provided beforehand. Material was broad in scope. Class was repetitive, especially in the last third of the semester.
Professor Barnes is very passionate about gender and women's studies issues. She is definitely engaging and very welcoming in her office hours. Midterm and final were pretty easy. Go to her office hours if you have questions, and just get to know her. She is amazing!
Professor Barnes is amazing! She is very approachable, kind, intelligent, engaging and all around great person and professor. definitely one of the best professors i have had. she is so knowledgable and is a really great lecturer. take her class!!!!!!!!!
I've taken classes with Barnes before (including GWS 10) and realized that she's not necessarily an "easy A" when it comes to her upperdiv classes. Compared to 10, she assigns a lot more reading, and grades significantly more harshly on the papers. I agree though that she is friendly, engaging, humorous, well-knowledgeable, albeit repetitive.
I've taken four classes with Barnes (20, 50AC, 111, 103) and all were great, but I found 111 especially interesting. Barnes is friendly and validating during class discussions and office hours. Barnes is extremely skilled at explaining difficult readings, even if she repeats herself a few times.
I LOVE BARNES! She's such a sweetheart and a very educated woman. I am always interested in what she has to say. Definitely my favorite class I have taken so far.
She is very insecure and gets flustered all the time. She gets mad and whiney if people leave the class early... in a large college classroom, this is unacceptable and immature. She also repeats herself constantly and talks slowly for dramatic effect, and grades pretty harshly. I would not recommend taking her class, especially if not a GWS major.
The professor's SO boring. She says the same thing that you read in her reader, so it's really easy to tune her out. I honestly wouldn't bother to come to class if she didn't take attendance. I wish she made Gender Studies more interesting, especially to another woman. Also she's so disorganized. Come to class prepared, we are expected to do that!
I love Barnes! She is easily my favorite professor that I have had so far at Berkeley. She explained concepts clearly and assigned very interesting readings. In fact, this was the only class that I went to the lectures 100% of the time. She is a very educated woman and I'm happy I got to have her as a professor.
I have taken three classes with Professor Barnes: 20, 104, and 140. Professor Barnes is a great person, though I have to admit, she's a bit hit or miss in lecture. If you're not in GWS, I doubt you'll enjoy it much. But, as a GWS major, I appreciated the spaces she left for discussion. She genuinely wants to hear what you have to say in class!
This class is not worth it. It's a lower-division level class with way too many expectations, demands, etc. The professor gets frazzled easily, and the structure of lectures are overbearingly long. The GSIs have made it a point that laptops will be monitored. She gets upset if you leave class early. I made a huge mistake taking this class.
Not worth it. She's funny and sweet but she's a mess when she lectures. Goes around in circles, runs on tangents, and her lecture slides are not helpful.
Her brain operates in a fairly scattered way, which is fine, but she ends up repeating herself often, making lectures pretty boring. Her comments are insightful though, she's very willing to help/talk, I enjoyed the assigned reading, and she definitely made it so that if you were willing to put in the work (5 hrs a week) you would get an A!
I took this course over the summer. It was my one of my first classes at Cal. Barbara Barnes is an excellent speaker, although sometimes a bit scattered. I was quite impressed with her speaking ability. She encourages engagement with the material with writings of personal experience. If you do the reading and participate, you'll do well.
Barnes is a really good professor and lecturer. She is very knowledgeable and helpful and will take any questions. She also attempted to learn everyone's names in a class of around a hundred. There was a decent amount of work but it was not difficult and she is a fair grader.
This was my least favorite class I have taken at Berkeley. Professor Barnes' lectures were a little all over the place and she was not always clear about what she wanted. I was really excited to take a gender and women's studies class but I will never take one again. I had a pretty strict reader, which made the take home tests a little frustrating.
Ms. Barnes is one of the most incredible professors I've ever had. She wan an incredible orator and graded fairly. As long as you participate and do the readings, you'll do just fine.
If you do around 75-80% of the readings and pay attention to most of her lectures, you'll be fine. It was a pretty interesting class and Professor Barnes is extremely passionate about the topic. It wasn't my cup of tea, but still, I'd say it's a good class to take! She's clear and concise and makes the information stick to your head!
She was often disorganized and late. She micromanaged the class like a high school teacher, taking attendance and scolding people for being on phones. I stopped reading after the first week and still had no trouble writing the essays after reviewing the lecture slides. There are also weekly current event assignments so it's basically 9th grade.
There is a lot of reading that she does not necessarily go over. What really matters to her is participation and caring about the subject matter. Usually half the class is devoted to comments on her lectures both from her and the class. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about gender studies.
You could definitely feel a strong white feminist vibe in the classroom although Barnes tries to be inclusive. Her lectures usually go off on long tangents and only talks about 1 reading at most in a week. You don't really need to read except for on a couple of articles of your choice to help you with the quizzes and essays.
Professor Barnes is an amazing educator. This class changes how you perceive the world and really shows you the value of an education. The texts challenge your point of view and offer completely new ideas. The class was engaging and the workload was fair. If you are truly interested you will definitely get an A, if not... She is so inspiring.
She is super cool and nice. Reserves a lot of space for students' opinions and questions.
She's awesome and cares deeply about what she's teaching
Left too much space for other people's opinions (that's what discussion is for). Could have gotten way more from lecture if it weren't for that, and there is a LOT to cover. Maybe the most interesting set of readings for any class (diverse, engaging). Final had some extra credit, and the assignments weren't difficult but you had to read most things
Professor Barnes is my favorite professor at Berkeley. I have taken 3 of her classes (GWS10, GWS 100AC, Feminist Theory 104). There is a decent amount of reading, but you do what you can, and she really covers it in lecture. Sometimes she is a little all over the place, but I really think it just humanizes her and makes her more approachable.
Professor Barnes is easily the favorite professor at CAL. She is such an inspirational speaker who definitely motivated, inspired and taught me to think outside the box. Her lectures are very interesting and fun to listen to. When you visit her during office hours, you can realize how caring and awesome she is. Her lecture is a must!
Dr. Barnes is an amazing lecturer and inspirational speaker. She is passionate about the class and the learning students are supposed to get out of it and her personality is easy to like and admire. GWS10 is reading heavy, but you can get by with skimming the readings and really paying attention in lecture. Great for stimulating critical thinking!
Fair amount of reading each week, but they're all thought provoking. Lectures are amazing! Very engaging and professor is genuinely interested in hearing the thoughts of students and respectful of all view points. No hw, 3 quizes which she gives you the prompts ahead of time, and 1 research paper that counts as the final.
Wonderful lectures. They were absolutely beautiful. She's an amazing speaker. My one complaint is she glared anyone who left early, & while I know we should stay (& I always did), I feel like in college, we shouldn't have to explain why we might need to leave. Other than that, assignments were clear & lecture interesting & thought-provoking.
You cant skip classes but over 4 times during the whole semester or youll be dropped. Lots of reading stuff but lecture was interesting if youre interested in this area Gender Women Studies. There will be a study guide before a week from the exam(exam papers topics are on it) you need to write a long essay and memorize all the stuff before exam
I'm currently enrolled in GWS 104 and Barnes is the by far the best professor I've had at Cal. Her syllabus is extremely clever and beautifully thought out; the readings are inspiring and highly thought-provoking. Her lectures are inspiring. I highly recommend this professor.
At the end of the semester, the girl next to me turned around and said, "I've never been so sad that a class has ended." I agree with her.
The most caring and likeable person I've ever met. The personal stories she uses to go with the material help you learn the information. This class was not only educational but inspirational.
Barnes is utterly brilliant. Hers is the most inspiring class I'm taking. She is the only reason that I'm glad about my choice of Cal; frankly, she is the best professor I've ever had. She is kind and she is spectacularly clever. Cal: please do something nice for this woman! She is a national treasure and you are extremely lucky to have her.
I'll be taking a third class with Barbara because she is incredible. Read everything and participate, then you'll love it. Don't leave in the middle of her lectures because she will get distracted and lose her place. But don't worry, you will want to stay coz her lectures are amazing and so is she. She also happens to be extremely kind. A++
Professor Barnes is a real gem. From her jokes to her corkiness to her amazing deconstruction of theory, she's definitely someone to learn from. This was a class that made you work hard for your grade and was extremely rewarding when receiving that high score.
Prof. Barnes teaches cutting edge, up to date material. The lectures and readings are amazing. She is personable, authentic, and sincere. Keep up on the readings and bring them to class with you. Try not to leave early because it distracts her and makes her lose her train of thought for a moment. She is compassionate, inclusive, and very caring
Somebody give this woman a raise! She's the best, literally.
Prof Barnes is extremely caring, is passionate about her subject and clearly has a strong following of students who love her. Personally, I found her lectures not at all engaging and struggled to pay attention. It was a lot of her talking without any other media or forms of teaching.
My favorite Professor at Berkeley. Passionate, kind, understanding, amazing lectures! She's one of the best persons you'll ever meet. Amazing lecturer! I took GWS10 too and she's such a great professor to have when learning basics in GWS. Everyone should take her!!
Prof. Barnes is such a wonderful person and an extremely passionate speaker. I just wanted to make her proud the whole semester and that worked as a powerful motivator! The readings are super intersting.
Dr. Barnes is my favorite professor. She is funny and so REAL with her students. There are times that she must gather her thoughts, and then, BOOM: revelation, manifest critical thinking! Dr. Barnes is also genuinely open to feedback and a gem of a listener, intellectually and emotionally. She thinks WITH her students. We learn from each other.
Tok this class P/NP but I just love Barbara. Super nice!!
Dr. Barnes is easily my favorite professor I have ever had. She is incredibly intelligent and knows how to break down the material, she can sometimes be a bit scatter brained but by the end you will get the point she is making if you pay attention! Reading matters in her class, but if you don't understand she will break it down very well.
Dr. Barnes is one of the most amazing instructors I've ever had. Just take her classes you won't regret it!
Dr. Barnes is by far one of the best professors I have come across. She's brilliant, kind, and extremely engaging! The topics covered are complex and hard to understand, but she explains them patiently and with wit! She is truly so kind to all of her students, understanding and non judgmental if you're not grasping something.
The class was quite disorganized this semester, and the grading was kind of silly at times because we would lose points for vague reasons. Additionally, the course material is niche in that it is a lot about nature and settler colonialism interacting with it. The class was alright at best, and professor was not the most engaging.
Professor Barnes will open your mind to concepts you never knew existed. She brings together biology, feminist theory, and various epistemologies to show new ways of looking at the world and other people in it. She is also funny and delightful and I highly recommend taking any class she teaches.
She's very passionate about what she discusses. She uses iClicker for lectures to mark attendance. She's badass.
Professor Barnes is clearly very caring and a knowledgeable expert in the field; unfortunately, her lectures are often repetitive and go off on less important tangents. The class was absolutely manageable though, and as long as you keep up with the readings you'll be fine
Dr. Barnes is a caring professor who is very passionate about what she teaches and does an excellent job of explaining the content from the readings during lecture. The readings she assigns are enlightening, albeit lengthy at times. Keeping up with the readings is the key to excelling on exams and assignments. I would 100% recommend this class.
There are 5 quizzes total in the course, as well as an essay split into 3 parts. The quizzes got harder as they went on, but I did fine without taking notes in the class. As long as you have the readings up as you take the quizzes and get your sources on time for the essay, you'll be fine. She also has a 1-day grace period for late assignments.
Prof Barnes is the best! The most real/human any of my UCB professors has been. She is very flexible and communicative. Don't stress her class and if you need help, just ask. Definitely recommend.
Although this class is heavy in readings, Dr.Barnes does an amazing job at explaining and going into depth on the readings so that it is easier for us to understand. Dr.Barnes is very accessible outside of class and is extremely understanding when it comes to grading. Overall, she is such a sweet and funny professor!
professor barnes is very funny and kind! the lectures were repetitive but it allows you to understand the material to its fullest extent since the readings are very dense. however, she goes off on many tangents during lecture. i saw everyone around me begin class ready to take notes and then slowly ended going on their phone
Prof Barnes is very passionate and knowledgeable in her field. My only critique would be that her lectures are redundant and tangent-heavy, even though they are required! Also, there's a LOT of reading, though if you are taking this class for fun, they should be interesting to you (I actually enjoyed reading them). :)
Professor Barnes' lectures were a bit disorganized, and never posted the slides before the lecture, even with my accommodations. The readings themselves were very fun and the theoretical concepts were interesting but unfortunately, her teaching style was not as accessible as I hoped it would be.
The class was decently easy and the prof. is definitely enthusiastic about her class. Prof was very into her lectures but they aren't all too entertaining as it is a 2 hour class. Graded off one short analysis "essay," quiz, midterm take-home essay, bigger essay, and final exam. Assignments/quiz are pretty straight-forward def worth a breadth class
she is so nice and all the test is pretty easy
The lecture is boring and long, she is repeating same things all the time, if the attendance is not mandatory, I won't go. Be prepared to read a lot!! And you could lose points in the all the assignments for some picky reasons. Closed book in class midterm and some quiz. Try to find other AC classes.
She's nice and all but there's so much assignments. Attendance is mandatory but if it wasn't I wouldn't show up. Lectures are long and boring. Quizzes and midterms are closed notes & no readings allowed. They can be very specific and ask for certain things she said during lecture. Lecture is recording but you have to request and have a good reason.
Loved this class
Not what I expected from gender studies. We spent the entire semester learning about settler colonialism. Nice professor but very repetitive and boring lectures. Unnecessarily picky when grading. Professor is very fearful of AI and is not afraid to accuse people of using it for any reason. Try to find a different class for a breadth or ac.
Super easy class with writing as homework. The reading isn't that necessary honestly because the lectures recap it all. Lectures are boring but it's fine. Easy A.
Great class! The lecture runs a little long at times, but ultimately, the material is extremely interesting, and Prof. Barnes does a great job of explaining difficult concepts. Heavy reading, but it's all talked about in lecture. A really great breadth class for anyone interested.
She's super nice & u can tell that she truly enjoys what she teaches. Lectures can sometimes feel like they run in circles but it's still worth it to show up. Readings are dense, u don't need to do all of them (just ones for exams/assignments), she explains them all in lecture. Makes a big class feel small, never feels preachy, always realistic.
