i loved her. she was helpful and always nice.

She's helpful but she's so hard! She gives way too much work.Gives quizzes before reviewing books. Be prepared for work when you have her class. A LOT of it actually. She's a hard grader.

Took her Sci-fi class, she gets really into it. She helped my writing alot. if you ask her for help she'll do all she can, you just have to be willing to try your hardest

She's a tough grader, but she will definitely improve your essay-writing. Can be tough, but is generally very helpful.

The nasty comments here are BS from jerks -- she's no fossil but a sharp, focused prof. who cares a lot about getting students to think and write their best. People who want to do work in college think she's excellent and cool (what she doesn't know about science fiction isn't worth knowing)!

Very _fair_ grader - my grades reflected the work I put in, but did not have to do a lot of work to get Bs. Can be boring, but Sci Fi is very interesting so this wasn't always a problem.

An awesome lady! Knows what she's talking about. She is a hard grader, but a fair one. She does tend to get off topic, but her stories are usually entertaining or at least interesting. She's very understanding, and does realize that you have other classes, and is willing to give extensions.

She was great and she really helped me with my writing!

She is a bit too specific on what she wants on papers. Gives one every week and grades very hard. Often contradicitng what she says in class. Also REQUIRES you to conference with her twice in the semester.

Excellent teacher. She has a fondness of sci-fi and poetry. Very knowledgable about literature- I gave her a LAngston Huges poem and she cited related poems by other poets off the top of her head.

She is awesome! Tough grader, but allows you to re-submit your papers for higher grades! Lots of extra credit opportunities!

It IS possible to succeed in Prof. Bengels's class if you do the assignments the way she requires and attend class. She is clear in her expectations, and demands a lot of her students to help us learn. Think of how many papers she needs to mark! And yet she responds in detail, expecting the best of us. She cares immensely.

She's very hardworking and approachable--but she expects her students to work hard too. I learned a tremendous amount from her.

I took a remedial course with her and she was fabulous. I had already failed the profieincy test twice--but with her non-stop help, I passed this time. I love this woman!

This woman knows so much it's amazing. She also clearly loves what she does and really wants us to succeed--but she wants to see us doing college work, not the babystuff that some of us got away with in HS. I learned an enormous amount from her--and love her sense of humor. I'm also a much better writer now. If you want to learn, take her courses.

She's very conscientious and hard-working. She's also warm and friendly--but expects her students to be diligent too. My writing and understanding of literature improved a lot--and I passed the Profiency Exam the first time thanks to her preparation. I took her for the whole year because I knew I'd really learn a lot--and I did!

If you want to learn, she's the teacher! If you want to coast through a class, go somewhere else. I think she's the best teacher I've ever had.

She's very knowledgeable about her subject and enthusiastic. She works hard to get papers back quickly and grades fairly--but you know you've earned your A when you get one. She expects you to do your best--but makes class fun so that you want to. I really enjoyed her class and would take her again.

Great caring and hardworking

Prof Bengels is a great teacher. Yeah she is hard, but makes you work for your grade. You get a paper a week from her. She is very nice and is always there if you need help.

She seems like a pretty good prof so far. A lot of work, but her class is interesting and I feel like I'm getting better at writing. She has a good sense of humor.

Very interesting course and an excellent teacher who really knows her stuff. I learned more here than in any other course I took this semester.

A dedicated teacher, Prof. Bengels goes above and beyond to encourage her students to learn. Hard work is rewarded. Expect an honest appraisal of your work but she's always available to help. I learned an enormous amount about writing in this class.

She is very helpful and really knows her stuff but she is kind of a hard grader. her class isn't bad but its not good either. she gives a lot of reading but i really haven't had many writing assignments. she's really nice and down-to-earth. i liked having her as a teacher.

A great teacher. A good amount of reading, but no more than you should be able to handle. Very few quizzes, essays, etc. Really knows her stuff, easy to approach, very lenient with extensions on papers, her writing assignments are often creative and fun to do. The only issue is her being sometimes extremely unclear with directions on assignments.

Its a lot of work for the required english class, but it wasnt necessarily hard work. she wants her students to learn and succeed, and you cant really fault her for that. She is very intelligent and approachable. She will help you pass the PE. Anyone who says that succeeding in her class was difficult wasnt trying very hard.

Great professor -- seems to really like teaching and to like her students and the subject matter. Hard grader but pretty fair. I learned alot in this class and she has made me a more confident writer.

She is a very intelligent & extremely interesting person. Her love for writing and literature makes this a fun and worthwhile class. The amount work is reasonable and the assignments are suited to the subject matter. I've taken two classes with her and she's been a great help with everything. I'm not a strong writer and her class helped me a ton.

Mrs. Bengels provides a rich experience in the classroom. She is rambunctious and fun, earnest and good-humored. She loves English, especially science fiction. Having a professor who loves her craft is a true treat. More than English, she loves to teach. She is a classy teacher who encourages constructive improvement.

Everyone who is ranting about Bengels probably didn't do the work that they should have. She is brilliant and is only harsh to help you succeed and pass the exam. She grades on improvement so even if you received D's on your papers, if you end the semester with A's you will receive an A as your final grade. Take her advice and you'll do fine!

If you are at Hofstra to be a STUDENT and you want learn...and are willing to work...this is a great, caring, motivated professor. If you're here for a meaningless grade, then you won't be happy here. With Prof. Bengels, you earn your grades and are proud of your learning.

I really like this professor. The class was very interesting and I looked forward to going because of the discussions we had. She is easy-going but still gets work done.

She hard to get an A out of, She'll you she's a tough grader, but is not exactly too clear as to what she wants. If you approach her for help, you can probably find out what you did wrong. I worked really hard and made it out with a B+. She knows her stuff, but go with someone else for an easier class

She is a nice older lady. She even will bring you food from time to time. However, she is such a harsh grader. She also gives a buttload of essays. You have an opportunity to do extra credit, which is nice. However, I felt I worked so hard to only receive a B.

Very nice and funny lady. She is indeed a harsh grader, but if you follow her tips, you will definitely improve a lot in writing. It was not and easy class; however, I learned a lot from her, and I definitely tremendously improved my writing skills. I recommend.

Bengels is a great professor who gives the grade you deserve. She is always willing to help and explain herself. If you put in effort and show you care she will bump your grade up at the end.

I wouldn't recommend taking Professor Bengels' writing comp. class. This professor's grading criteria is unclear and essays and journal entries are lost repeatedly. When meeting with Professor Bengels to discuss overall course work her answers were not consistent.

She gives lot of essays but makes the subject relatable so it is always easy to write about. She is fair and explains grading. She is a stickler for grammar. Overall her class is an easy A if u are willing to do the work.

I really enjoyed being in this class. A lot of people didn't like the way she graded, however I think she graded very fairly. She would directly state what she wants you to work on and what she thinks you can improve on in order to do well. She preps you a lot for the proficiency exam. If you put in the work and go see her, she will be very helpful

She is very clear from the start as to what's expected. If you take this class pay attention and you will do fine. She is more on the tougher side of grading but allows rewrites and different forms of extra credit. This is a writing course so obviously be prepared to write. If you wanna do better read passages or skim a few pages and participate

Prof. Bengels was one of my better professors. She really wants us to learn and clearly is passionate about her field. She is not an easy grader but I felt like I had really earned it when I did well with her. A good grade from her feels like a true accomplishment. She has a good sense of humor and really cares about us as people. I learned a lot!
