Very boring lectures. She asks the class a lot of questions and puts people on the spot. This discourages shy students from attending. Exams were random facts from the text book, therefore attending lecture was useless. Class average was 56% on the mid-term, ridiculous! I've had worse, but I'd avoid her if you can.
She could make learning the ABC's complicated. Avoid her at all costs or your GPA will drop just like you knowledge of biology. I am appaled at her teaching ability. SOMEONE SAVE ME FROM HER CLASS
worst teacher I've had a uivc. Mitderm was definitely just ment to trick people and didn't properly test your knowlage of the subject. her lectures are boring and she basically just lectures straight from the text figures although on test make sure to memorize random bits of information she may have mentioned sometime during any of her lectures.
Impossible to determine learning objectives for testable material. Very significant threat to GPA.
Attending Dr. Ehlting's lectures has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my time at UVIC. I can't say much for her exams, but I literally got so frustrated listening to her I had to walk out of the class several times.
She has a BIG accent, which makes it very hard to understand. And the language of Bio makes it harder. However, going to class is a waste of time because all of what she says is from the text.
Wow, there are some harsh comments on here! Dr. Ehlting is such a sweetheart, and is so enthusiastic about Biology. I like that she writes very straight-forward tests - no tricks! Her accent is not bad, she only has a little difficulty with some words and will correct it if you let her know she is pronouncing something incorrectly. Great prof!
I would not take a class with her again. Notes were straight diagrams- no supplemental information given so you had to rely on your textbook for all the information. She rambles on which makes listening and understanding the material that much more difficult. She could be the biggest biology fan in the world but that still doesnt mean she can teach
Well, its not that Ehlting is unpleasant or anything, she is a nice lady... But her tests are fairly tough, you really need to study the textbook thoroughly which can take forever. Her final exam was actually pretty fair, but her midterm was near impossible, and her notes are useless, and the class is dry.
Very impressive instructor (her first time teaching in UVic was this course and she did very well). She knows what is important and what isn't, and the challenge in her class is to listen to her carefully, she will give a lot of hints on questions coming up in midterms/final exam. She also seems very bright and knowledgeable outside of Biology
New prof, got stuck with boring part of Genetics, and had Choy's big shoes to fill. Lectures were somewhat dry and slow, due to the material. Very amicable and helpful in office hours; she'll find her lecture stride within a year or two
Boring class made even worse by unenthusiastic teacher. Really dry.
I thought she was easy and very straight forward on the exam. She repeats, almost annoyingly, the exact question that will be on the test. If you don't listen, then that is your fault.
She did the second half of this course. I stopped going to the lectures because they were so dry I wasn't really learning anything.I'd recommend using her lecture notes and the book. She does add things into the lectures that aren't in the book (but she puts in the online notes). Very bad at explaining things. Not very helpful either.
Awesome prof! Gave it her all to make class relevant & interesting. Very energetic & caring, classes flew by. Wish she taught 150B.
I love Ehlting! She's a sweetheart and has a real love of bio. The course is kind of dry but she makes it a little more interesting. She does have an accent but you can understand every word, she just mixes up meanings sometimes or mixes words up. She's a great prof and I would definitely recommend her.
Barbara Ehlting is a great professor! She is super nice and very funny. Her slides are made to help students learn the basic material, and the material they cover are in the exams, which are very fair. There were 3 exams and no labs for this course, so as long as you attend and study your slides regularly, you should be good to go!
Awesome prof. She has an accent but it is not bad. Her lecture notes are some of the best I have had. Crystal clear and to the point. She brings in relevant and current research to compliment the book material. Exams are very fair, right out of the notes. Exceptionally helpful if you email and make an appointment. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
I had her for biology 230 last year and 360 this year. She improved a TON. She is my favourite professor. A total sweetheart, very helpful, and her notes are great. The accent is not an issue. I highly recommend Ehlting.
Horrible! Lectures were difficult to understand. Luckily I knew a lot of the material going in, because I can't imagine learning much from her.The final exam contained many things not covered in class or readings, such as particular protein structures too specific for this survey course. The average was 56%!Also spent 3hrs calling glucose "glycos"
Ehlting is such a sweetheart. She often got distracted and went off on tangents, so rarely finished lectures on time, but her enthusiasm for Biology made the class really enjoyable. If you go to class and take good notes, you're pretty much guaranteed to do well. 2 midterms, 1 final, all multiple choice.
Great course. Barbara made the lectures as captivating as possible, it is dry material to begin with but she adds scientific papers to supplement which make the material more exciting to learn. She's very passionate about cell bio and it makes for a great lecturer! Tests were very fair. Long answer, choose 5 of 6, and multiple choice. Recommended!
Well, the course itself is a little challenging but Barabara is very enthusiastic. Her positive and cheerful energy were sure passed on to us students. Test papers were fairly easy.
Worst Teacher I have had in 4 years at U-vic. Does not have a good grasp of the english language which makes the wording of tests confusing. I would avoid classes taught by this prof.
she makes the class so boring and her lecture slides are pretty much just random images taken out of the text book. in general she just randomly skips around in the text book making it really hard to follow... learned the course on my own and attending her lectures was pointless.
She is very enthusiastic. Very clear with her teaching. Exams were fairly easy. Always willing to help. Loved every bit of this course and learnt a lot from it.
Horrible!! Useless lectures, and the slides she posts online to refer to are even worse. Exams do not reflect material she teaches. Be prepared for a struggle through this class with her. You'll end up teaching it to yourself using Wikipedia and the textbook.
Very clear explanation of material. However, some of the material is dry, and this makes it harder to absorb while studying. One thing which was annoying was that she tends to speak fairly loudly, and so when she used a microphone (which she did every lecture) it felt like being yelled at about genetics for 50 minutes.
She is a very, very nice lady. However, her notes are just diagrams taken from the textbook so you need to spend LOTS of time outside of class teaching yourself. Her accent can be hard to understand. Her explanations were clear, but her lectures are VERY boring. Francis Choy is 1000X better than her. He should be teaching for the whole term.
Nice woman, but she talks very loudly and uses a mic which makes it sound like she is screaming at us for 50 mins. Tough to listen to. She talks fast, and a lot so it can be tough to know what is important to write down and what isn't. Would like to see her put more notes actually on her slides. Tests were fair and she gave away a free question
Barbara's accent is no problem. However she talks pretty quickly but explains the concepts well. My recommendation would be to record the lectures so you can go back over them later. Her half of the class is not as interesting as Choy's, so if you lower your standards from him she's a great prof.
Ehlting was great, super enthusiastic and clearly loved her job! Lots of content for the tests but they were definitely fair. Know your stuff and you'll do just fine :)
Ehlting is nice and very enthusiastic, but she isn't the greatest lecturer. The lectures are mostly just a regurgitation of the posted notes, and she shouts a lot. Tests are really fair for the amount of material to learn. If you are in BIOC 299 at the same time things get easier because a lot of the material is the same.
Helpful & friendly. I found the tests difficult & had A LOT of material to memorize. Interesting, but too much! This course had a lecture A DAY before final, which I found quite unfair. My friend, who took 361 in the winter, said that his prof took some material out to fit the schedule. Not sure whether ours were shortened, but still, it was a lot.
She is great. She dealt with the hard 361 material with such organization that everything seemed to flow easily. Her exams test your understanding of concepts, not details. If you are interested in genetics you will LOVE this class. Attend every class! Stay focused and you will barely need to study. Good luck !
Barbara is really interested and enthusiastic about her subject. She can sometimes go off topic because of this, though. Exams are fair providing you pay attention or study well. Didn't use the textbook once.
I found Barbara to be a superb lecturer. She is very conscious of her accent and makes a great effort to ensure the understanding of 200+ people. She answers questions flawlessly, I enjoyed attending and never missed one class. There were people in my row who skipped every other class, they didn't do well, not smart people though.
Barbara is great. A lot of material to pack into your brain, but you'll get that with any bio class. She is pretty engaging and tells funny jokes sometimes.
i gave her a 1 for helpfulness cause although she was always available to help and was nice, her help was usually unhelpful. often seemed to have a poor grasp on what she was teaching, her slidesnoteslectures were extremely unclear, and i ended up having to wikipedia everything. her tests were easy if you can memorize, and didnt require understanding
Barbara tries to get through as much material as possible instead of taking the time to explain the material. Her accent isn't difficult to understand but she makes grammar errors that make some of her statements false and reversed of what she's trying to say.
Super passionate about bio, enthusiastic, funny, and tries to involve the class in discussion as much as possible rather than just talking at her audience. Makes good use of the full lecture periods and provides more than enough information to readily grasp concepts: for this reason, I found tests to be easy. Very approachable.
Bio 360 is one of the toughest classes I have ever done. Not the material, but the test were brutal. Only MC and you get 7 or 8 choices per question! Some questions took up half a page! So if you aren't great at MC tests like me it can be tough, that being said if study like a madman you can do well. She was a great prof and would help when needed.
Biology 360 is a very difficult course. Dr. Ehlting's half of the course is easier. Many people say that she just has diagrams in her notes. Although this is somewhat true, she gives very thorough explanations and takes her time going over them. I would recommend bringing a laptop so you can annotate directly on the slide notes.
Make sure to bring a laptop/tablet because she is usually racing through material, especially before a midterm. I'm not a strong test taker, so having choices that sometimes went up to the letter G was an absolute nightmare. Lots of material, lots of notes, lots of answer choices and I am glad I managed to pass. Know the material inside and out.
Tries too hard to be funny which makes her material confusing. Was corrected by students a couple times and she got defensively. Office hours were a waste of time. Tests easier than Dr. choys.. But also words questions confusingly
Test questions are tough, but come directly from inclass lecture and slides so be prepared to take good notes (and fast, as she goes through material very quickly). Her humor was interesting to say the least, overall she wasn't too bad.
explanations are poor and confusing tests are hard, some of the questions are up to a page long questions are poorly worded she rips through the lecture notes the old textbook does not have answers to the questions she does not provide any additional resources to help you study for tests, NOT even a practice test or practice questions
Memorize, regurgitate, repeat. As others have said, races through difficult material. Tests are all multiple choice and require meticulous memorization followed by prompt flushing of material after the test. Simple concepts like splicing are explained better in 5 minutes of a micro class than 2 hours of this class.
Nice lecturer, funny and very passionate about BIO. Only problem is she is not very approachable during her office hours (She was even kind of rude with me, making me feel like I was asking dumb questions).
Her lectures are really engaging as she usually brings in some kind of prop or food to make you create connections between the material being taught and the real world. You don't really need to use the textbook but there is allot of information in her lectures that's not in the slides so attend class and take notes of everything!
She manages to get through a lot of material in a short time - highly encourages student participation, explains things clearly, knows her stuff and is passionate about the subject. Tests were very fair - and talk to her after class! She is a really great person. Given the pace of the class, do not skip!!!
Only graded in multiple choice tests so if you don't write multiple choice tests well then even if you know and understand the material you won't do well. She makes you buy a $300 textbook but doesn't assign any pages or questions and it doesn't really do a good job of covering the course material. Very disappointed overall.
Not too bad, sometimes needed to check old bio 11 notes for clarification though. Engaging at times, but go to class to get the slide information if you dont want to use the text. goes through fast, but is open to question in lecture. enjoys class participation
Great lecturer in terms of enthusiasm, but seriously lacking in covering the topics in an understandable manner. This class was terribly taught. Use the textbook. Powerpoint slides confusing and hard to understand as they are all diagrams. Does not offer any tip or hints as to what is testable material.
Lecture notes are very unclear and sporadic - you are better off not even going to the lecture and just reading the textbook
Barb was super caring testing was super fair( she gives you a free 5ish % on MTs) . Beware of the group portion of the midterms as students who did not study enough (casuals) tend to bring down the mark of the people trying to get a good grade (she might not continue to do this as it was her first time doing it this semester) Overal great prof!!!!
The things on the tests are unproportionally to the material, her tests focus on mainly one chapter and ignore other chapters, so, if you were lucky enough, you might study one chapter and get 70 out of 100 for the term tests. she does not know the questions asked from her students, and it seems like she just wanna get this course done.
Barbara Ehlting cares about her students. She gives multiple hints in the lectures about midterm questions, answers emails quickly, is always willing to meet in person to help you out, and is just generally a nice person to talk to. She is always in a happy and optimistic mood. Her tests are difficult to get used to, they're very lecture based.
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT that are very specific to stuff she hasn't even gone over thoroughly in class . Many people failed the final exam and her class.
Barbara was awesome for genetics. She clearly knows her stuff and her lectures are super interesting. She makes really good analogies and comparisons to make the material easier. We all did great on her exams and she's super cool to talk to about research outside class!
Honestly I thought Barbara was very sweet and it is clear that she really cares about her students. Her slides are not the most comprehensive so you definitely have to go to class, pay attention, and write lots of notes, but her exam questions are directly from her lectures. Try printing the slides before and writing supplementary notes on them!
She was definitely much more engaging and passionate about her work, but she puts an emphasis on class participation. Her midterm is based heavily on lectures and she makes skeleton notes so if you miss a lecture you'll miss the main points from that lecture. Reading the textbook helps with understanding but she won't text on anything from it.
Barbara is fantastic! The course content is awful as hell but she makes up for it by bringing in live examples and doing her best to make abstract concepts relatable to our lives. Love her!
She's a great professor. I ended up recording her lectures so that I could listen to them slower at a later time; she speaks about detail-heavy topics quite quickly, and it's easy to fall behind in class! That said, she covers complicated subjects well, and uses PowerPoint slides as a visual aid for her lectures - she doesn't depend on them.
Barbara is honestly one of the sweetest profs I've had. She often brought in stuff to enhance the lectures, which for my class included anemones she found that morning at the beach and different types of plants. She does have a German accent and her pronunciation isn't the best (which can make things hard for technical terms) but it's not an issue.
Covers too many things and explains way too quickly. Awful notes and explanations. Test questions are fair but studying is very annoying with the resources you get.
Boring and she isnt kind outside of classes Exams are easy to get A range
Dr. Ehiting worked hard to keep her lectures interesting. I loved her enthusiasm and her clear explanations. She was friendly and approachable.
Barbra was amazing regarding her skills to teach biology. She was interesting, enthusiastic, and brought tons of great interactive examples to make her explanations memorable, and exciting. As long as you are a great note taker and listen to her word for word, you should not fail this course
she means well and is very nice to go into office hours but her lecture slides are HORRIBLE to follow along with and some of her questions she asks on tests are beyond understanding. you need the textbook because then you can use that to help understand her slides made of only pictures
Very nice teacher! I found her teaching style amazing. She uses powerpoint slides and explains each slide perfectly. If you want more information or missed some info in class, everything will be on the textbook. The midterms might be shocking at first because you have about 6-7 choices to pick from in each question. Overall, READ AND STUDY :)
Decent prof. Tries her best to involve students in lecture discussion.
This class was great! Taught very well. On the first day she forced us to get our neighbours cell number so we can make study groups, which was great because studying as a group was worth it. Requires alot of note taking because the power-points does not contain all the info (so don't miss class). Overall, I learned alot from this class.
Barbara was a great prof and had an excellent teaching style. Although you don't have to attend all the lectures since it is purely based on the textbook, she goes through all the information very thoroughly and writes the key points and terms to remember with the class which is very helpful. Her portion on the final exam was to the point and easy
Our semester got ruined by COVID but she was super adaptable throughout the whole process and listened to student feedback. Tests are not that hard and her and Dr. Choi add a few bonus questions which is cool. Clearly cares about students and loves her job. Also I didn't buy the textbook and did fine, just go to lectures and take good notes!
She is a great professor and really nice and caring. She only has office hours once a week, and it is hard to make it, but other than that, she is always willing to help. She is hilarious but does not explain her slides as well, and rushes through important topics without explaining much. Her tests are very easy though, and she is great.
Her lectures are almost exactly what's written in the textbook, except she rushes through it with a heavy accent, often making it impossible to follow what she's talking about. Highly recommending just reading from the textbook, as that's all she does too and it's MUCH easier to understand. Test questions are often very poorly worded too.
She is a great person, very compassionate and clearly cares for her students. However, the method of delivering slides/lecture was questionable. She crams way too much information into each lecture slide which makes it really hard to follow through. I had to stop and pause the lectures and rewind way too often to write everything down.
She seems like a very sweet person but her teaching style really doesn't work for me. She just has a tiny bit of detail on a slide and then talks for the rest of her lecture videos, you have to pause constantly. Honestly just easier to read the textbook, which is frustrating. She is very accessible for help though so she obviously cares.
Dr. Ehlting's enthusiasm for plants was truly inspiring, and her lectures on the plant unit were very engaging as a result. She brought in live specimens and directed questions at the class. Her teaching method is largely oral though, the slides do not contain much of the crucial information so they are hard to take notes from beforehand.
Really enjoy Dr. Ehlting's classes. She really cares about teaching and wants everyone to understand the material.
Dr Ehlting's lectures were straightforward and she broke down the material very well. Her passion for plants is very clear! Her test questions were easy if you had a general understanding of the material.
Her content was somewhat more challenging on the tests. Reading the text chapters on plants helped a lot. Questions weren't too tricky with a decent understanding of the content. Her lecture explanations were a bit less clear than the other professors, but she also speaks English as an alternative language so that is to be expected.
Delightful professor. Very funny, and personable.
Her accent is thick and she rushes through the lecture material so quickly so it's very difficult to understand and follow what's going on.
Dr. Ehlting really cares about what she is teaching and that her students understand the material in the lecture. She makes her class really engaging and I highly recommend her as a professor.
I couldn't understand anything she said. Her teaching style really didn't work for me, and I found the exams to be very difficult with barely enough time.
Barbara is very funny and her test questions were very fair. Definitely recommend her for this course!
Barbara is very knowledgable and funny, and is very clear with presenting the material. This course overall is very different from my other classes in the sciences, as the only things you are graded on are the exams and the lab, but her exam questions were fair.
This was a material-heavy course that was broken up into small understandable parts. Closely follows the textbook, and sometimes rushed through the material. Tests are worded kind of weirdly and tested understanding rather than memorization. Barbara was sweet and inclusive of everybody. She also prioritized our mental health. Would recommend!
Took condensed biol 360 in the summer with her. I always found quizzes super fair and exactly what was in the slides (always got an A+ on them). The final had some tough written but overall was fair and easy. She is very caring and a great prof and wants you to succeed. The material is hard but she makes it very understandable.
This class had by many different profs during the term but she was easy to understand and caring. She gave good information in class about exams and grading.
Professor Ehlting's BIO360 class is challenging but manageable. The quizzes are fair, and Unstuck ai helps with study prep. The lectures can be hard to follow, so reading the textbook is key.
Not a bad lecturer, but pretty boring.
Do not take this class with her if you have a disability. If you have any kind of problem or accessability needs in the class she will actively hinder you. I do not reccomend at all if you forsee needing accomidations above the average/common ones. Even if CAL supports your request, she will argue with you and CAL.
Seemed like a kind person, but lectures were quite boring and she didn't explain concepts very well. Acted very inconsiderate and passive aggressive when it came to tech issues during quizzes and the final.
Ignore all the negative reviews. Barbara gave great lectures and cared a lot about students. Test questions were challenging, but that's the way university is supposed to be. I think a lot of the reviews are unfair, coming from they're students who expected an easy A.
Her lectures were pretty good, she would give example questions after each topic that we went through as a class which were helpful. The tests were mostly fair, but with a few weird/random questions. She recorded and posted lecture videos. There is an optional textbook which I didn't buy, and isn't necessary for the course in my opinion.
Of all the 186 lecturers Dr. Barbara Ehlting definitely gave the best lectures. She talks pretty fast, but not too fast to where I couldn't keep up with notes.
Wish I had a different professor. Or had easier exams. Exams sucked, too much material to memorize. Not even my main but was a requirement.
I found her to be a very pleasant lecturer. If you participate in lectures, you will gain a lot more from the course and do better overall. Tests cover a lot of information but you are allowed to bring in a one-sided information sheet with as much as you can fit on it. I found the course to be incredibly easy and got an A with minimal effort.
Hate this class. Can't even understand her. Doesn't record either so when I got sick and missed lectures I was screaming mad. Hate this.
