Very boring and hard with a big project at the end
No Comments
Uses the class as a way to express her own political views and belittles those who disagree with her. Average tests, but long essay at the end.
Got really tired of political B.S. and the "important" concepts were purely to push her political agenda. Very disrespectful to students. The paper was rigid and had to be written to appease her point of view only, or else grade suffers.
She makes you think about life.

BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL!!! If you are not one, don't even bother; anything that goes against her beliefs is cause for a non-passing grade (I learned the hard way)
She doesn't even teach history. All she does is b**** about politics (shes a hippie). I was only in the class for two days and knew that I would not make it through because of her nonsense rants. TAKE DEFOE!!!!!
Stay away from this teacher
The way Fairchild teaches history is based on concepts, not dates. She will give study groups if you ask and has handouts with test questions. She makes you feel bad if you answer a question wrong and says duh a lot. If liberals bother you don't take her.
PSYCHO! Dozens of 15 minute rants about how evil rich people are going to kill your and your dog! Tests are easy, paper is not (10 page essay). DO NOT TAKE!!!
This professor is extremely uptight and too caught up in trying to change everyone's political oppinions. She is very disorganized with her thoughts, and waists the students time yelling at other students.

Terrible teacher. Her views and opinions get in the way.
Tough cookie. She's passionate about history, and does have strong opinions.Makes her lectures more of a conversation that many want to sleep through, but allows you to understand what happened and why rather than exactly when. Definately not a friend... but an effective teacher.
I really like her. She's very passionate about what she's teaching, that makes it interesting. She is very opinionated but that makes the class fun. She's also pretty funny in an odd way. You have to appreciate good humor to really understand it. Give her a try, easy class, fun teacher.
lectures are very unclear and hard to follow
Nice person, but needs to actually LOOK at the board when writing things down, when I took her she often scribbled the last parts of words, so it was extremely hard to figure out what she was writing and take good notes.
Lectures are hard to follow in the beginning but slowly become easier to follow. she has some very strong views, some which are irrelevant to the class. good if you like to listen to long lectures and do long papers. bad if youre a hands on person..like me.
Dont take her. You might not understand what she is talking, literally.
THE ****IN DEVIL DO NOT TAKE. EASY TESTS, IMPOSSIBLE PAPER THAT IS 50% OF GRADE. 10 PAGES BASED OFF ONE BOOK EXCLUSIVELY. DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE
VERY OPINIONATED &set in her ways, u better work ur butt off on the paper or she'll kill u (not really) start early & ask 4 LOTS of help, passionate lectures, open with polical views but u better not be! Never read & got Bs, u can do it just dont expect a friend from her- dont sharpen ur pencil!!

Study mildly for the tests... but MAKE SURE to go in and have her revise your ONE BIG term paper a few times... and at least a solid B is yours.

Never ever ever take her class!!! She is the worst teacher I've ever encountered. She insulted my beliefs in class daily and uses her role as teacher as her personal soap box. Plus, she's rude! She threw my friend's paper in the trash and said "this is crap!" I"ve never worked so hard for a "C".
She's insane, her lectures were basically her opinions, didn't follow the book, but the only good part about her class is that the test was based on the lecture which meant that u don't have to read... that's the only good thing. The paper sucks........ don't take!
She is a very helpful teacher. if you go and seek her help you will do well in her class.
If you want to have satan teach you a class, then take Fairchild. No but really..she will put down every person in the class on a daily basis. Unless you believe the things she does. Maybe that was why half of our class dropped the first week. But if you do take her, pretend like you agree i nyour essay and you'll maybe get a B...maybe.

Not many liked, i enjoyed. Have her proof your paper, but she practically tells you everything to write. Borderline socialist, but she can back opinion with facts. If you cant, she will destroy your arguement. Exactly why people hated her.
she is a very angry woman with a point of view that runs the class. if you don't understand or take her point of view, forget about passing.

was not impressed by Prof. Fairchild... she was unclear with almost all assignments and notes, she never wanted another opinion other than her own, DID NOT LIKE HER!
she was the most unclear, unprofessional teacher ever. she had university expectations and last i checked we were at a jr college
If I can get A+ is history classes without effort and actually study in her class and pull out with a C on a test...WTF...the reading and lecture aren't even necessary cuz her tests are just a crap shoot. Plus, she is just totally unpresentable. Very bad teacher - I know a good one from a bad one (everyone teaches in my family) SHE IS BAD...VERY BAD...
I actually liked her. I took her in the summer, and yes she is very opinionated, but she's at least passionate. The only thing, is I don't think she likes guys that much. My boyfriend and I took the class together and she kicked him and 90% of the boys out. I only got a B in her class with a 88%. She was always nice to me, and I think people need to get over themselves and stop being mean when she can't defend herself!
Horrible teacher...does not expain and is very opinionated. She believes whatever she says is right.

Worst professor EVAARRRR! If you are a man, leave your testicles at the door or you might not get out with them intact. All Republicans, especially conservatives will be forced to shut up while she explains why it is that you are stupid. All foreign dictators are not good, but American Presidents are mass murderers, that is the lesson of her class!
just dont take the class. wait till next semester to get another teacher. strictly lectures and reading. her lectures are very confusing and someone in the class will most likely disagree with her opinions 100% because she is very liberal and proud of it. but if your able to understand her lectures you are good to go. but most likely you wont.
"It is the mark of an educated man to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it"Aristotle. Keep that in mind when reading the other reviews. I have different views from her but I looked forward to every class. She teaches you to think, not memorize facts. Test are scantron and she tells you exactly what she wants from your 10+ page paper.
Very Entertaining. I loved going to class because she made it so interesting but I didn't agree with most of it. She is a very good speaker, varies tone of voice, even yells some times. Very liberal, democratic, don't open your mouth unless you are good at debate because she is really good! Scan Tran test were EASY!!
first history class where i still remember what i learned. teaches you to really think before you except anything. really gets on guys but they're useually the only one's that speak up in history. Final paper took a long time but not bad and walked with an A when expecting a C. Be very opened minded and you will do fine.

She is the worst teacher! She only teaches what she believes in, not what the books teach, but her tests are from the book! She is extremely opinionated and hates everybody who doesn't see things her way.Her end of the year paper...no one passed!
She sucks and that's all there is to say.
TERRIBLE take someone else.
She's very hard, and all her tests are on her lectures. She comes across as really mean, but if you take time to talk 2 her, she really tries to help you, and wants you to succeed.
I took the online version of her class. Her lectures made up a bulk of the reading and they were horrible, conjecture based, opinionated and completely unsourced. For the research paper, she gave you 2 chapters out of one book and her lectures as the ONLY sources that could be used. I tutor history and consider her absolutely horrible.
This teacher absolutely sucked. Her lectures were boring. Her tests were hard. She wasn't helpful in reviewing for the test. This teacher cared only about her own opinion and hated every other student who thought another way.
She is one of the worst teachers ever. She doesnt like anyone past the front 2 rows and she doesnt like anyone in the armed forces. She will argue anything and will not help out the students who need it. When you write an essay make sur that even if it comes out of your knowledge that you somehow site it because she will accuse you of plagerism!
I love history but can't believe this woman is allowed to preach her socialistic values on everyone, then expect them to adhere to her everyword...Sounds like a communist, smells like a communist...probably a communist. What a joke of an instructor! Being the lead of her department doesn't say much for Sierra's control either.
tests are tricky and very fast paced, huge essay worth 1/3 your grade and lots of lectures besides reading
Be sure to communicate with the class because the teacher is useless in that aspect. Pushes her opinion on everyone and then wants you to write about it. Talks to you like you're a child. Don't take the class!

It's just been my first few days of class but she seems very interested in student participation. She brings up conterversal topics but likes to hearfrom the student. If you answer a question wrong or go off topic she wil try to make a positive out of it for the class.
Apparently I didnt read in the course prerequisites that being able to read her mind was required! Probes class for answers and then criticizes your understanding of the English language. Find my self wondering if I took Hist17a or "everyone should hate America as much as I do" class.

When asking questions she attempts to have students think, and make points that made you think. At frist she took me by suprise. She's a little ethusastic and passionate about understanding.Take her if you want to better understand the history of people in this country.
Great tearcher. Interesting and at times in your face.
Do not take this teacher, especially if you are planning on enjoying a study abroad program, if she decides she doesnt like you for what ever reason then there is no way you will recieve a fair grade even if you earn it, she is partial to guys, probably because she doesnt get much attention outside the classroom. she doesnt take any opinion other t
She is the worst teacher i have ever had. She is very rude when grading your 12 page paper you have to write, on mine she said this was a very week and horrible essay, a little harsh id say. Her lectures make no since unless you think just like her, overall worst class and im so glad its almost over.
The worst teacher i have ever had. shes ****,rude, she may have a couple of good points in some of her lectures but shes so in your face. She is pretty clear what she wants on your essay (10pgs) but she demands perfection. I want to punch her thinking about that class.

Fairchild is the rudest professor at Sierra, in my opinion.
Her lessons are insightful and very interesting, she has alot to say about the history of the past and the history we shall be making in the future. She knows her material.
worst teacher i have ever had. She makes you feel stupid. Her tests must be answered in a way she would answer. If u dont know an answer to her question she says "duh" or "you guys dont know anything". Her class is the worst class i have ever taken, Im glad the semesters almost over!!

I am about to drop this course ... the way she writes notes during her lecture is retarted !! she jumps all over from one topic to the next not having any relation! then try's to play these guessing games with the class to get the answer. When she finally gives the answer your like what the hell ? you have no clue as to why or how she gave that ans
BOORRRING!! If you dont pay attention to every word she says you'll get lost, not that it will help you much because the tests are impossible, and she is not an easy grader, i thought i did well on an essay i turned in and she said rude comments on my paper. I DO NOT recommend this class!!!
Although some of the other comments are a bit brash, my experience as a student of hers was average. She expects attendance and participation. Sometimes she is difficult to understnd and sloppy, but ask for help. I would suggest not speaking out of turn or texting in her class. I recieved high grades on all my papers and tests.Really not that hard.
Not everyone likes her but I thought see was the best teacher I've ever had. She is witty, and want you to think. Also I belive see wants you to see the "truth" of what is and was going on. She is great, helpful. Don't be put off. Participate and ask questions. My biggest hint is speak to her out of class about your paper and shell love ya.
Pushes her opinion on everyone, seems like she has a personal agenda when she teaches. If you like to debate(argue) then take her class and disagree with all of her extremely leftist ideologies. Lots of work and lectures. Choose for yourselves. =)
Don't take this teacher if you can't think for yourself. You are not uncovering some big secret when you find out she has an agenda--she tells you up front. Gets you thinking, doesn't make you do a ton of work, and the lectures are riveting.
One of the worst teachers i've ever had, im a history major and i hated her; 90% of what she talks about is completely unrelated to anything we should be covering. She an EXTREME liberal and feminist and constantly trys to push her views on you. Do yourself a favor and leave before you have her.
Worse teacher ever!
I HATE HER!!!! I took an online class with her and she's completely insane!!! she has emailed me some pretty rude things and has called me a few names... Also if you make a mistake she lectures you on not following directions. I will NEVER take this class again
She's relatively nice....I wish she would just leave her liberalistic comments TO HER SELF.
Well, overall, I don't mind her too much, having an online class with her now. She's very liberal, that's a given. While I don't mind teachers stating their opinions on topics, the thing that gets me is she forces her opinions (and general liberalistic opinions) as fact and it pushes a feeling to disagree with everything she says.
The worst teacher I have ever had. If you want to go crazy and hate history take this class. She is a communist and hates the United States.
The worst class I have ever taken! Very liberal and if you do not agree with her you will not pass the class. She grades based on favorites and if you are not a favorite you will not pass the class. Disucussion Board points from her online class are never fair! Do not take a class with her!
Worst teacher ever! If you are not a liberal or her favorite you will not pass the class. Online Discussion board points are not handed out fairly! Do not take her class if you want a good grade and if you have any intrest in history.
The best teacher that I have EVER had, she truely cares if you learn the material, and rewards those who do have the desire to learn with good grades. She is very helpful with her office hours, and will correct your paper and spend the time. If you like to actually learn, she is the best teacher for the subject. No memorization of dates required!
This woman is a flipping nutcase! You can't read her handwriting and assigns a ton of reading. And she is just plain crazy. If you are silently looking at another paper on your desk she will flip out and tell you to pay attention to her useless lectures that do not even relate to her tests. You have been warned!!!
She is the worst teacher i have ever had!!! I like history but she made me hate this class. My recomendation NEVER take her!
I actually really enjoyed this class. She wants you to learn. The only problem is that she teaches history with a blatant bias towards her liberal agenda. She abuses her role.
Wow, I expected to have extreme liberal teachers in college but I also expected to be encouraged to develop critical thinking. She does not allow any thoughts outside of her own, the entire class is from her own material and just a bit from a biased book. I would never take this teacher again.
one of the worst teachers ever! she will treat you like your 4 years old! she has horrible handwriting! If you do get stuck with her just be quiet or she'll make you feel stupid.
She is awful. She refused to correct her grades after I showed she misgraded. She made me look like a fool in front of the entire class because I did not agree with her radical opinions. Take any other instructor besides her. She is Sierra College's worst!!
Shes a University level professor with great information. A few people rated how she talked to them like they're 4yr olds. In the 2 classes I took with her she had to communicate with several students on that level because they were idiots expecting her to hold there hands; this is college. But classes are really easy as long as you attend class.
this is the worst teacher that i have ever had is only excepts those who agree with her and if you dont then dont take the class she was never in her office durring her set times so you could never get help before tests alos her lectures dont match anything from the text so it was hard to understand what answer was right never take her
I never rate a professor unless they are worth it, she is worth my time because I don't want anyone to make the same mistake as I did in taking her class. First of all, the way she speaks is so unclear, her lecture notes on the board can never be read, and she has the hardest way of creating a question. I love history, but she really killed it for
Terrible. She thinks she teaches at USC but she really teaches at Sierra College (Junior College) Unrealistic expectations. She thinks your world revolves around her class. Steer clear!
you do work for your grade in this class. she is an awesome teacher and very interesting if you pay attention. this class is not easy if you do not want to learn or do not come to class. she will call you out for texting in the middle of class and ask you to leave but come on we are all adults you should know how rude that is.
If you do the work, you will get a good grade. However I would not recommend this professor. She is angry and bitter. She goes off on her opinions which have nothing to do with the lecture. Many of her opinions have no basis-they are just rants that attack people who don't agree with her.
I went into her class hating history as a subject and I still don't enjoy it but she did make it fairly tolerable. Things to know - You have to work hard, there is an in class essay, a take home essay, and four tests. She expects for students to be engaged. Not as horrible as everyone says but NOT an easy "A" You will use the text.
I took her class and she was one of the most rude and just plain MEAN teachers I have ever had! She called me a highschooler when she perceived I was doing something wrong. I was not! Absolutely demeaning, she dropped me when in her sylabus she stated she does NOT drop people. She is very liberal and has her own vendetta. Overall, hated class time!
I would rather get hit by a truck then ever take a class with her again!!!!!
Great teacher, very interesting and gives you the facts and truths that most won't. Don't take the class if you don't want to work 6 times the semester for the 2 essays and 4 tests, besides those its no homework.
barbara is a terrible teacher, her notes are unclear, what we read in the book is never discussed, lectures in class do not coincide with what we are reading! her tests are never on things we actully learned!its impossible to even fill out the study guide bacause the questions on it, like the ones on tests, have nothing to do with the ciriculum
The worst teacher I have ever had! She is extremely liberal and gets mad if you disagree. Hard to stay awake in her class. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER!!!
She was very eyeopening about many events that happened in history. Her grading is based on two essays and five tests. You need to do the reading for the tests. The tests are based on the readings and lectures and the reading questions are easy but the lecture questions are pretty difficult so write as much of Fairchild's lecture down as possible
Just took one week of her class and decided it wasn't for me. She didn't once talk about subjects relevant to the class; just preached her own point of view, passionately too. I don't mind a teacher with their own view point, but she's very loud (screams sometimes)and doesn't respect her students that disagree.Take her only if u agree with her.
I just took the final for this online class. Her viewpoints are negative and very liberal. Expects WAY too much for online students, saying you must log on 4 out of the 7 days of the week! Who even goes to CAMPUS that much for ONE class! I only passed because I aced the paper. She did offer 2 e.c. assignments in the end which helped me too. NOT REC
She is my favorite teacher that I have had in the last two years of school. Just be prepared to be able to reason through adult ideas and you will excel.
I was only in her class for two weeks, because she became unbearable VERY quickly. In the first class she went into the difference between facts, opinions and interpretations, and then for the next three meetings went on to present her opinion as fact. Couldn't be objective to save her own life. I love history, but she completely ruins the class.
I love this teacher. I went from not liking her very much in the first week of class, to looking forward to her class every week. Gets off topic a lot and definitely preaches her agenda. TAKE NOTES of everything that she writes on the board! She is hard on her students and expects a lot only because she knows you are capable of excelling.
Extremely liberal, uses this to back up her teachings, biased in a lot of cases. careful, she's passionate too
This professor is a horrible historian. She preaches her own agenda, which is extremely liberal, and doesn't give a realist view of what history should be about. She makes idiotic comments including "murderous British", "capitalist elites", and my favorite "every person that is wealthy is so because they stole from lower classes".
She is terrible....here is the deal DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS if you are taking any other classes. This is for people that are going back to school or are retired and looking to take one class and put all their effort into it. If you have a full schedule YOU WILL NOT GET HIGHER THAN A "C"....
She is the worst history teacher i have EVER HAD
I took her class online, and it was pretty easy. However, there is a TON of reading, a little too much, I think. If you do all the reading, the discussion, the essay, and take all the tests you should get at least a B. She's very obviously liberal and not the nicest lady, but I thought the class itself was alright and pretty easy.
Many wrongfully take her interpretation of history as her opinion, but her opinion comes from the patterns she's studied throught history. She doesn't expect anyone to agree with her. She's a bright woman, and she does expose her opinions on today's political controversies. Still, it shouldn't hurt to hear her out and reason for yourself her logic.
This class was fairly easy and i ended up with an A. She does give you her opinions on today's problems and makes it seem pretty bleak at times, but most people need a little wake up call. Overall her class was very fun and i would definitely recommend taking her to anyone who likes to think, and if not the class is still really easy :D
This class is a lot of work but fairly easy if you keep up on the reading. The teacher is very helpful.
She expects you to learn all about history simply by listening to her talk and learn next to nothing from the bad book she gives you. The book is a non-fiction story telling book and not a typical thick history textbook. You end up taking the test and feel like you have learned nothing about what the questions are asking.
She is an ok professor. She IS willing to help when you fall behind, offers some extra credit, she lectures at a good pace, but her papers that she wants due are really complex and have to be done her way. (If you don't like writing papers, don't take the class). She expressed her opinions as facts. Her office is always open for any questions.
History is my second major, but my most knowledgeable subject so much that I have never taken a hstory class where over 20% of the information was new to me. As a person who loves history I will tell you to never take her class. Her class reminds me of "The Ministry of Truth" from 1984 by George Orwell, no joke.
FANTASTIC professor. Very experienced in the subject. More like a University professor than a high school teacher. Her lectures are thorough, informative, & interesting. She mentions her own opinions but backs them with facts & makes it clear they are opinions, not fact. Attend all classes, take good notes, & pay attention - you?ll get an easy A.
I liked her, she had passion for what she teaches and it shows. she lectures for the whole class and you have to take good notes or you will fail. she does whatever she can to help, byt lets you know that learning is your responsiblity. the book use is not used to much when it is the reading is easy. over i liked her class.
Lets just say I was a Monday/Wednesday girl for 17a and I switched to Tuesday/Thursday for 17b. Barbara was one of my favorite teachers of all time and if you are willing to open your mind than you will actually learn something... My advice is to weed out the other comments because they missed the point of the class.
not much homework other than reading and gave us study guides but then had extremely specific and trick questions on the exams. the lectures did not make much sense because she would switch time periods and topics every few moments and go back and forth between them. it was very confusing and she was very particular with formatting.DO NOT RECOMMEND
Great teacher. GO TO CLASS!! Take notes, read the book. You'll do fine.
Whatever you do, don't take you're cell out in class!! Oh, and BE ON TIME!
While I appreciate people sharing their opinions, Fairchild stated them TOO MUCH and often as if they were facts. Too often, also, she would go off topic on a rant about things that were unrelated to the subject matter of the class. Worst of all, she has a way of making you feel stupid if you don't know what the answer to her question is.
Her tests are so difficult and she never gives lectures to what is fully on the test
ok teacher, take her if you really have to, if you do the work its an easy A
Her lectures are pretty boring and very long, but if you take notes and do the readings you should be able to get an easy A
I took three history classes with her, the survey courses and contemporary History. Many did not like her but she inspired me to become a history teacher in high school. Thanks Barbara.
Terrible!! rants about things irrelevant to history! goes from talking about past to present and makes no connections to history!
She is extremely rude and demeaning. Vert judgemental. Lectures are very scattered and unorganized. I will never take another class from her nor will I refer her.
"She is extremely rude and demeaning. Vert judgemental. Lectures are very scattered and unorganized. I will never take another class from her nor will I refer her" I could not agree more. When she's not giving a so-called 'lecture' about her pathetic life she's hell bent on making someone feel like complete crap to make her sad life seem better.
I can't agree more with the other posters that she is TERRIBLE!! The absolute worst teacher I've ever had. What ever you do, don't state your opinion, she will fail you if you disagree with her. Her lectures are all over the place and her tests are ridiculous. What a joke this woman is.
bizzare. fairchild is a case study in obsession and insecurity. listening to her lectures you get the idea she is talking for no reason other than to control. not really to teach. I have taken online and in class with her. she's truly mental and a detriment to sierra college which is slipping from a great JC to a very average one.
Mrs. Fairchild is passionate about her beliefs and is not wrong on her opinions but she is EXTREMELY volatile and does have a chip on her shoulder. I watched her snap the heads off of a few students! Her lessons are obscure and often questions on the test were not discussed in class. I suggest she take lessons from Prof. D. Kuchera.
huge rants about nothing, puts down students. huge hippy but not in a good way. while i found this class pretty easy it was pure torture and was by far the most boring class i had. wouldnt recomend her, but if your going to you might as well show up and at least half pay attention to "lectures".
She is HORRIBLE. Rants on about nothing. No textbook, which means you literally have to write down nonsence. A little part of me dies when I come to class.
I've never rated a teacher before, but this 1 was had to be. I can't see why anyone would rate her a quality teacher. She lectures on her opinions as if they were facts. Very boring lectures that have nothing to do with the time period. We're suppose to be learning about Virginia and shes talking about Ronald Regan. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this teacher
All she ever talks about is her "opinion" not what actually happened. Her lectures put me to sleep every class I go to and she is completely left winged. You HAVE to do well on her tests, because thats all she grades you on.. no hw, no textbook, no classwork, only lectures. I DO NOT recommend this teacher.
I've taken her online and on campus and liked the online class better. On campus lectures tended to get off topic, plus with online you have hard copies of all lectures for reference. She has a 'sharp edge' but overall I found her history classes to be very interesting and if you understand the material, a good grade!
Not helpful at all instead very degrading, does not know how to communicate, is rude. Tells her opinions more in lectures than the actual facts of history. Would NEVER recommend this teacher. Thinks she is an English teacher instead of history.
straightforward 4-5 tests, verbal online tutorials, & studyguides. One essay: outline is graded, inclass essay is 1sr draft, take home essay is final draft. She uses an amazing approach by teaching hist via cultural change. No phones, Don't be late, have her check your drafts- I loved her-I would recomend her anyday- do ur work & u will b fine
Barbara Fairchild is a terrible history teacher. In her classes she rambles on about her own opinions and pointless stuff that has nothing to do with her tests. She is rude and doesn't care about her students. She most likely enjoys giving bad grades to students as opposed to good grades. Her classes are boring. I would not recommend this teacher!!
just finished her online class. don't be discouraged by the comments left here by lazy students. online course consisted of 4 curved tests, a fairly graded 4 page term paper, and weekly discussion. it was a little difficult to keep up with discussion and know the expectations to getting a high discussion grade but overall not too bad!
Have take two of her online courses and enjoyed both. She is very originized and her expectations are clear. Learned alot and didn't have to memorize dates of events. lots of reading and discussion. would recomend.
Grades writing more strictly than any English teacher I've ever had and hardly gives any feedback.
Hardest teacher I've had yet. Would not recommend taking an online class with her, it's near impossible to get a decent grade. She requires an insane amount of research and you need to log in at least 15 times a week and be commenting on others posts constantly. I took this class online so that I could work more and stress about class less.
It seems as though ENGLISH and Critical Thinking are more important to her than learning the facts about history. Personally, I believe she is bitter that students take her class because they "have to" for GE as opposed to having a genuine interest in her subject matter. She makes history scary and stressful.
Loved this class. Dr. F may come across as blunt, but she is a great teacher. She had me wanting to do better, and I believe that is a sign of a good teacher. She calls on students to "think." I took her online class and it was doable, even with a busy schedule.
She may be the Simon Cowell of History teachers, but you will learn a great deal in this class. She does her job, and that is to teach A.H. I never heard her give her opinion until asked. Most students love her class, may not like her so much, but u walk away with knowledge.
Awful at teaching. Overall, she mean to students whenever any opinion is brought up. I would not recommend taking her class.
She is more worried about how you outline your notes and how your writing your essay. She seems to be more focused on english and not on history. She is not helpful when you ask a question and requires so much from her work it's hard to understand what she actually wants. Don't take her class
She is passionate and the only homework is about a chapter a week of reading, and it is easy reading; not a textbook. For someone that goes to the majority of classes and pays attention, the tests are easy and it isn't the same old thing you've always been listening to. The only history class I've ever felt a serious benefit from.
Our midterm essay was killer. I took this class with my brother and he dropped it because of the essay. She is big on organization, and she hands out soooo much paperwork on how to do the essay, I felt like I followed it as she had instructed, but yet NO ONE in the class got over a C on the essay. It was hard.
Condescending, egotistical and laces lectures with bias yet claims the importance of fact, not opinion. Essay's are impossible but tests are easy enough to ace. Expect brutal comments if you hit her soft spots.
I want to be thorough and honest here. This teacher is fair...I guess. If you can move past her rude comments and condescending nature then I'd expect you to get through the class without pulling out your hair. I have never felt so degraded by a teacher, and I am merely in her online class. Learn to write in her style or you wont pass.
This was the worst teacher I have ever head. She does not give you full points for discussion board unless you post seven days a week. You get less than a minute per question on the tests. Her expectations are unrealistic so it is impossible to pass her class. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER SHE IS HORRIBLE. She needs to retire.
She sometimes gets frustrated by questions. For the outline for her in class essay, I asked the week before it was due about it, and was told I wasn't supposed to understand yet. When I showed up with an outline that looked more like a draft, she chastised me. After class I told her I had tried to ask she said I should have "followed instructions."
DR. Fairchild is probably one of the rudest professors I've ever taken a class with. She interjects her political ideals into her class. She teaches this history class like it was a Cultural Anthropology class and an English class. In the essay she is more worried about the format than the content of the paper. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Fairchild is a really good teacher, she just gets low ratings because you have to stay on your feet with her. She challenges you, and isn't that the point of college.
Fairchild is awesome. she's a really smart person and her lectures are clear and interesting; if given a chance, she will change your outlook on America and politics. she gives extra credit and study guides for all the tests an quizzes. her test are easy too, all multiple choice.
She is not the nicest teacher and often comes across rude. She grades hard however as long as you stay on top of your hw you'll be fine. The essay was a pain. She also posts outlines for each test and that helps tremendously! I'd recommend her to someone who doesn't mind putting in a lot of work
Loved her! I took 17A online. The syllabus she provides can seem intimidating. If you are a motivated student, this class will be easy. Dr. Fairchild has a very organized online system. There is only one essay, and the rest is discussion boards and 4 tests. I thought she was rude until I met her in person. I'll be taking 17B with her!
Easy easy teacher in my opinion. take notes during her lectures which are pretty interesting, and do your reading. i did my reading the night before every test and passed every test with a B. she posts online study guides which are AMAZINGLY HELPFUL. paper is not as hard as it seems. all the negative comments are from people who dont put in effort
Easy class, attend class and take notes during the lecture. She is a very good teacher and has a lot of insight. This is a class for someone to wants to actually learn and understand rather than regurgitating facts. Her essay is extremely easy if you do the reading, which is a lot coming from me… I absolutely hate writing and I got a perfect score.
will put her own opinions on the tests so if you have any knowledge of the subject before hand it will cost you points. overall the class was easy but she constantly falls behind the curriculum by spending 1/3 of the class reviewing last class. I have told everyone of my friends not to take her class.
Took online class, ALLOT OF WORK!!! Takes allot of effort to get full credit on discussion boards, and the tests are ridiculously hard. If you work your bottom off youll get a good grade. She will clarify and respond to any questions you have very quick though.
I have always earned good grades and thought that the people who said she was hard were just lazy. Let me tell you, she's HARD! Tests are somewhat easy to pass but the essay is pure torture, i"m a really good writer too! Do not take this class if you have any other option!
It's not an easy class. Two major complaints are that she's opinionated and that her essays are too hard. If you think she is wrong about a subject, then, by all means, ask her for more details or do more research yourself. No one does this. Essays are based on how well you explain yourself and follow the rubric, not your "skills" as a writer.
Her tests are easy to understand if you pay attention, and take notes you will do fine. Essay's are more difficult, however the key to her essay's is to see her after class to correct a rough draft. If you show you are trying, then you will excel.
Very good teacher knows what she is talking about do the reading and don't be lazy and you will succeed! i got a B in her class which I was shocked to receive because I didn't do so hot on the essay which is really detailed. Make sure you talk to her during office hours about it and you'll be fine. Test's are all covered material in class.
Took an online class. Much harder than I thought it had to be, one had to participate in discussions constantly and log on at least 5 times a week. The week was from Thurs. to Thurs. which wasn't great for me as couldn't get to it until Tue., Wed. and was losing points. Someone mentioned "opinionated", that's true. Any in-class is easier than this.
Very good teacher but you cannot be lazy. Took her class online and you must answer discussion board questions in which it is very difficult to get full credit. Tests are long but if you listen to the test prep audio file it will help greatly. I learned a lot in the class.
She is a great. Her class is hard but if you take notes and do the assigned reading you should have no problem. she is very fair when it comes to grading and even offers extra credit if you are struggling. her writing assignments are a challenge but if you follow the prompt you will get a good grade.
Do not take her online class unless this is your ONLY class! You are required to log on at LEAST 5 days a week. The work load is ridiculous. I have taken many online classes and have only ever received A and B grades, until this one. Expect to answer a lot of discussion questions and respond to others posts often and more than thoroughly.
More interesting than 17A (had Fairchild also). Not designed for full time students. You need to log in basically every day for discussion postings and post more than throughly for points. I still learned a lot, but it was a lot of work for being a 16 unit full time student. Still easy and structured amazingly.
A LITTLE QUIRKY BUT LOVE WHAT SHE TEACHES. TESTS WERE EXACTLY FROM LECTURES. IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP OR TEXT, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE, AS YOU SHOULD BE. I ENJOYED THE CLASS OVERALL.
I liked the class & actually learned a lot. She's a little rough around the edges but she gets you to think. Also, you need to pay attention & not be texting on your phone or you will be asked to leave. Tests are straight from lectures so if you miss class, better get notes from someone!
Overall I did not like this instructor nor the class. The workload did not bother me, but they way she addresses students seems very rude to me. Since the class is online, I do not have the luxury of seeing her face to face and understanding her possible "sense of humor" or sarcasim, if that is what it is.
She is the rudest teacher I have ever had. She is so sarcastic and mean in discussion board posts. What teacher says "Why would you even ask that." I would never suggest students take her class she is very unhelpful and extremely rude.
DO NOT!!! Take this teacher. She is pathetic. I agree with the other post about not taking this class if you plan on taking other classes. She expects you to log on to many times a week. Most people who take online classes do so because they already have a busy schedule and can't attend class.
Don't take this class! She expects you to reply to atleast 4 students comments in Dicussion boards, Most teachers only require 2. Your reply has to be atleast 125 words! Who does that?! Students should not have to make up additional words just to make the 125 word count. When this happens it is no longer the student's honest reply!!
This course is not hard as long as you keep up. I took this online and she is extremely organized and upfront with her expectations. She asks for a lot of student involvement, which in return will help you on the tests. This class is very time consuming, but if you keep up and stay involved you can earn an A.
It is time consuming(4 essay DB questions weekly 4 responses each 3 tests 100 Q's). But she has audio study guides, the lectures point out what's on the test, and her required book is not that expensive($20). Yes her comments are abrupt but this is college and the class is not that hard. This class was actually interesting and I liked her lectures.
I had her for Spring 17B and now enrolled in 17A. This class is easy. Here's why: 90% of the work is from her lectures. If you read lectures and post discussion replies based on that you will ace the class. Just reread each of the lectures before test and ace them!
Heck no! Don't take it!
Taking 17 b next semester with her. One of my favorite teachers, if you like history she's good. Knows what she's talking about.
By far the worst teacher ever!!!! The only reason you should ever take her class is if your seriously dumb. Her "textbook" is not a textbook at all and is in fact an actual novel from barnes and noble!! She is also ridiculously rude. Her replies to your discussion boards are rude and not helpful what so ever. Good luck if you have to take her.
Fairchild is a liberal teacher, while this is so if you are a conservative many people enjoy the class. Should you pay attention and listen you will pass her class. A very general knowledge of History will get you by. Literally all of her comments are based in fact such as those regarding the "elite" The truth is written through history.
Taking this online so I can work around my schedule. WHO CARES if I post everything over one, two or 4 nights! She is rude, sarcastic and not helpful. She is also liberal and honestly, do not appreciate that she inserts her liberal political ideals in her lectures! If you're going to teach, then teach. Leave your liberal opinions out of it!
While she is very knowledgeable about the subject, her manner of teaching is deplorable at best. Chicken scratch handwriting plus no notes or real textbook, and lecture that are mostly random tangents that have the thinnest thread about what we're supposed to be talking about, coupled with rude and sarcastic behavior leave much to be desired.
The tests are easy. If you follow the study guide, read the assigned chapters, and mostly attend lecture, that part isn't bad. She is very tricky with her essay, however. IT IS NOT AN EASY ESSAY, but if you go to office hours and have her proofread your essay, you will pass her class with an A.
Ridiculous amount of forced discussions. Doesn't help you learn its basically people repeating themselves for credit. She makes it boring, she is not helpful and kinda rude. I felt the class was pretty easy just tedious.
Passed her class but had an absolutely dreadful experience. Could not tell if I was being graded for an English class or a history class. Very opinionated teacher. The worst experience out of any classes I've ever taken at Sierra Colege. Do not take a class with her you will regret it.
Here's the tip of the year.. Go to class, take notes occasionally, and take your essay to her office hour two different times before it is due. If you do, you get 100 and an A is no problem. Her lectures are boring but she has a good heart and is a good friend if you speak up. The essay is critical, though. If you don't take it to her, expect a BC
She probably does have a "good heart" but her personality is rotten as are her egotistical mannerisms. Taking her class online? Expect to be trolled. She came across so rudely, people were honestly afraid to have any real dialogue. The poor gal thought it was someone ELSE who was making the forums unbearable, THAT is how delusional she is!
