This is a very difficult prof. She assigns mega reading, goes over some of it, but doesn't give follow-up ques. You have to remember everything. Tests and quizzes are all essay. Term paper was hard and ambiguously hard to decipher what she wanted. If you have a choice to take a different prof, do so!
Ridiculous for an intro class. Struggled throughout. Tests unbelievably hard. She's no help. Teaches with Powerpoint, but notes are lacking. I'd avoid this teacher/class.

The worst! I dropped this class after a month. Her reading assignments were too long. She must have thought that this was the only class her students were taking. She basically would tell the class that she thought they were all stupid. Avoid this teacher at all costs!
She is a very nice woman who LOVES her subject. Her passion for history made the class interesting. Her tests are hard though but if you take good notes during her lectures you should do just fine. She is very helpful and will answer every question you have.
Reading and writing assignments every week. That's fine. She's the kind of teacher that looks up every student's work on the internet to see if they plagirize. The kind of teacher who smiles at the class when she talks about giving a student an "C" or an "F". She's stringent and odd. I wish I could have switched classes. I found out too late.
Prof. Fox provided powerpoint notes on every lecture and her lectures were wonderful! However, don't take her if you can't do the work, the readings are challenging and study guides are very broad. In comparison to what I've heard about other West.Civ. Professors, she is hands down the better choice but be prepared to work.
Shes a very good teacher and she loves history. Be prepared to do alot of reading assignments and study for all the tests. Shes not that bad, one of the better HS professors. Nice lady, shes just strict about attendance and lateness but youll survive if you just take notes and pay attention.
She gave weekly reading and writing assignments but allowed you to miss about 5 of them I think. They were easy, basically just answering simple questions about a reading. There was a weekly quiz as well. The class wasn't easy but she was nice and seemed to want everyone to do well, she was willing to help. She also really loves history.
got an A in west civ1.. she tells you whats on the tests, cant get much easier!! recommonended

she gives alot of work and alot of reading every class, but as long as you pay attention and actually study, you will do fine, she also gives some extra credit which helped alot. In western civ 1 we have 3 tests, 1 big essay, 5 quizzes thats all
took her for western civ.1 and it was easy, she is strick on attendence, tests are easy... got an A for my final grade, take her if you have the chance!

Out of her mind. You have to see it to believe it. Repeats useless stuff 6 times, talks to everyone like they are in elementary school, has handwritten essays each week on the assigned reading on top of tests and other work. She flat out said, "we will have writing workshops to teach you how to write like a historian". This is not English class.
I have no idea why so many users have rated this professor so poorly. Yes her tests require studying but the rest of the class is easy. She drops low grades, and gives you all the tools you need to complete most of her assignments early, and she does not give that many. And she is NICE!
all negative comments about her are from lazy people, review your notes before the test and its impossible to fail, she gives you a review sheet with every topic on the test, which are only multiple choice... she is an easy grader on the term paper also.. i would take her again if i could, shes a great prof. that knows her stuff and how to teach.

Her class requires time, but she's fair. Her test are super easy and her writing assignments are not so bad. She's understanding and loves her job, her energy and love for history can be seen in lectures. Great professor, prepares you for college. A's are a sure if you're motivated and listen to her instructions.

She gives alot of work. Should be teaching highschool not college. Deff. thinks that her students have only her class to take because she requires so much of your time. Tests are kinda easy, but a really tough grader on written assignments. Quizes are extremly easy. All in all shes not a terrible professor. I just wouldnt take her again
While she is easy to understand, lecture wise, she is so so mean. Doesn't really spend a lot of time going over the paper topics, and is very rude in her emails when you ask for help. Very snippy when you say something "wrong". Would not take her again, at all.
Stay away from her class! She's horrible. Her lectures are boring and just made me hate history even more. Would not recommend her.
Teacher is very helpful if you go to her office hours. She takes the time to go through topics with you. Tests are easy if you study her reviews and follow outlines in class. Quizzes are simple. Big writing class with tons of specifications. Learn to write essays well.
This is a great professor. Some people dont like her because all you do is take notes. She is a very fair teacher, gives alot of opportunites to pass the class and get a good grade. You might think she gives alot of work but its all very straight forward and if you dont understand you can talk to her about it. Over all she is a pretty good teacher.
Where do i start? i was a history major until i took her his 102 (western civ 2) and she completely took whatever fun was left in history. I thought western civ would be about all western civilizations.. she turn into French nationalism/ french history.. im extremely we'll say un fond of this proffesor to the point i reported her.. TERRIBLE!
A strict Professor. Gives a lot of work that is fairly time consuming. Does not make class interesting, but is clear with notes. Tests are not hard if you study, but she grades writing assignment strictly.
I had her for his 102 and the class is very time consuming. She breaks the semester into three parts, each have 4 online quizes, a test, and a paper. The tests are challenging, and you do really need to study. She is clear with notes, but gives an overwhelming amount of work. my advice is find another professor rather than taking her.
This was the worst class i have taken at suffolk so far i dont mind doing work but she is so monotone by the end of class i was falling asleep! ALL of the links she puts up have problems. the only good thing was that she tells you everything that is gunna be on the test
She is a pretty good teacher. If you participate in class and do the work then you'll get a good grade. Make sure to ask for help if you are struggling because she is very helpful, dont be intimidated! If you study for her tests then they will be so easy!!

This professor is horrible like literally HORRIBLE! i would deff NOT recommend her! She gives online quizzes, 3 exams, a paper which was so difficult and a paper presentation as a final. Exams are HARD! She talks way to much and bores me to the point where i want to fall asleep! She's very complicating and confusing. DON'T TAKE HER, WASTE OF TIME!!
I already hate history classes & thanks to this professor I hate it even more! Her lectures are long and boring. Time goes by so slow. She makes you read ALOT!!! People wrote she's clear on notes but I don't think her notes are informative. You pretty much have 2 make your own notes. DONT TAKE HER CLASS SAVE YOURSELF!!!! (western civ)
Not a good professor. She grades too tough, expects you to know the textbook as if you wrote it yourself and gives out way too much work. Hardest class I ever had to take for no reason, she is nice though but expects way too much from you.
You're not allowed to take pictures of power points. She doesn't teach you she talks at you as if we already know these things just from the little reading she gives us. You take little quizzes every week on black board. Only have a midterm and a final which you don't review for in class. Expects you to do way to much as if thats your only class.
There is about 4 or 5 things you have to do for each homework that involves a quiz at the end on Blackboard. Too much homework for one class, and she does not stop talking the whole hour and fifteen minutes. There is not one silent moment and she expects the textbook on the second class, no matter what. She has an attitude that I did not appreciate
Way too crazy of a class. She gives mandatory reading reviews, online quizzes, a chart that you turn into an oral presentation and a midterm and final. Claims her class is very structured but it's a mess and very confusing and over whelming. Wouldn't recommend taking her class.
Really dreaded this class. She's not a bad professor at all, but she just gives a lot of work to learn and prepare outside of class and that includes three or four essays based on what you have read for homework. Compared to this class all of my other classes have been a breeze. Definitely have to put in work for this class if you want to pass.
Nice woman, however she is very tough in class work wise. She teaches the class like we are in an ivy league school and while it is nice she cares about us getting information, she acts like her class is the only class we are taking and assigns way too much work.

Enjoyed her class immensely! There is quite a bit information and she delivers it! I learned quite a bit of information. It is not an "easy" class, y ou will read tough text and write papers and you will be overwhelmed.
I wouldn't recommend taking her if you have 5 other classes to worry about. Homework is due every other day and I think she truly believes her class is the only thing students have to worry about. She should really take into consideration that we have other classes that require our time. She's a nice lady and lectures well but the work load. Smh.
She is very strict but you are going to learn what you are supposed to with her. Make sure you are doing the work the way she wants to. Do the work and reading or you won't pass. This class is hard but very interesting.
Incredibly dull personality, rambles on and on during her marathon lectures. The preporation sheets are never ending as you have to print out tons of them non stop. So much for saving the environment. To obsessed with her precious blackboard, makes you think your taking an online class but have to show up also.
Professor Fox was one the worst professors that I have ever had as her workload is downright unfair. Overall, if you are taking a lot of classes for the semester I would not recommend taking her class.
She made this class unnecessarily complicated. The essay assignments were really difficult to understand and she got frustrated when the whole class didn't get what she wanted from us. The lectures are interesting and she's very passionate about her subject. There's a lot of reading and you can't skip it because she has pop quizzes.
Cares way too much about blackboard and made things so unnecessarily complicated. She's very picky and wants things done her way or the highway. If you pay attention to her long (and dull) lectures, do your homework and do things the way she likes them you'll be fine. Get the textbooks because the homework and term paper require their use.

Strict grader, a lot of work outside and inside the classroom, if you don't do the work specifically the way she wants it done, you'll fail. She is strict with attendance although she offers extra credit in some aspects. Not a bad personality but she could tone the work down a notch.
As a person she is okay but I would not recommend her as a teacher. Heavy work load and high standards. If the work isnt done the way she wants she wont give you points even if it is clear effort was put in. She basically looks at her PowerPoints as an outline and expects you to write everything she says. Theres also a lot of reading all the time

This course has a lot of information to touch as is plus prof. Fox has a true love for history so she throws in little back stories to things that make the class a little more interesting. Would def not take this course if you have a lot going on and 4+ other classes. Homework's are rough but if you do them its easier and they help out on tests.
Professor Fox is very nice, you can tell she really loves history. But the amount of reading and assignments required in her class, was the equivalent of all the work combined for my other classes. If you aren't good at taking notes, and interpreting readings about ancient history, her class will be a struggle for you. Do the study guides & e.c!!
After reading the comments & reviews, after an entire semester, I can honestly say she wasn't THAT bad. She does assign about 10-12 SHORT passages to read in two weeks, but overall, the course was not hard. If anything, it prepares you for real college courses that you'll take in a university. Just make sure to READ & DO THE WORK. (NO LATE WORK!)

She's a nice person but she expects you to spend at least 4 hours per week on the course, but the workload will lead you closer to 6-8 hours of work per week for this course.
Fox was one of the worst professors I ever had. I got an A in HIS101 so i was not expecting HIS102 to be bad. She never gave complete powerpoints, would just show pics and you would have to type/write what she said. (Said that almost every class). Her grading is worse & never miss class, you'll regret it. Retook it and got a B+ with diff proffesor
She is a very harsh grader, and expects a tremendous amount of reading before each class. Usually the room was silent because she expects us to be ahead of her lectures at all times, and nobody would have read prior to discussions. She is available and gives decent feedback, but simply expects way too much for a basic World Civ class.
Lectures are awesome and really keeps you interested, but she does give a lot of work. There is A LOT to read, and there are two study exams due at each term worth 20points, I suggest doing 3 items a day for the study guide so youre not overwhelmed when its due. There are 3 outlines the 3rd being optional, 6 quizzes, and the 2 finals are easy.
Im actually a history geek and find it the most interesting subject to learn, Fox is the absolute worst professor their is, adds unnecessary work and essays, talks and talks throughout the whole lecture, does the absolute most DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! I ended up passing with a D, yet got an A in HIS 102 with a different professor.
If you want to take a class that is unexpectedly annoying and read a lot of paper you dont need to read about, take this class. She gives A LOT of readings and a lot of homework and is a harsh grader. Her tests are 3 essays you have to write, 5 little parts where you circle and read and 30 multiple choice in an hour. dont take this
Professor Fox thinks that her class is the only one her students are taking or that students dont have jobs. She gives an immense amount of work that is far from necessary. Dont take her, you will regret it. Youre expected to write three essays on the test + multiple choice in an hour.
Dr. Fox is one of the toughest graders and professors Ive had so far. She is a wonderful person only if youre doing your work and participating. She gave a bit of HW and there were only 3 insane tests. But if you love history, she will be one of the best professors youve ever had! So if you are someone who will put in the work, youll have fun!
Do not take this class. Professor Fox is a tough grader and gives unnecessary work. She will try to help you pass the class, but overall not a good professor. All she does is lecture and make you take notes. Sometimes she will make you do class exercises that are graded. There are three test and she makes you do charts for the essays on blackboard.
I worked my butt off for her class, never missed a single class, did all the assignments, and only got a C minus. She demands perfection. She is nice, but I feel like she has some sort of complex where she thinks her class is SO important. NEWS FLASH LADY: You're a community college professor. This isn't a PHD class. Do not take her class.
Dr Fox gives great lectures so make sure to take good notes so you can source them in your essays. 1/3 more work than your other reading-heavy classes; for people saying they're not used to reading this much, you're either not reading enough for other classes or you're an exceptional student.
Unfortunately I have had the experience of having her during this global pandemic. Not only did we still have to Read multiple readings that were assigned. Mind you those readings are either short or very long. on top of multiple 15-20 min quizzes each week you must submit 2 essays for each test with no textbook information because there is no book

I haven't went out of my way to rate a professor before, but I highly advise incoming students to dodge her. She gives overly complex work that should just be a simple task. She is stern, and strict with grading. A single mistake gets you a whole letter if you're not careful. Tests are copy/paste sessions that last 15 minutes.
So i usually never leave reviews here but i felt like this one was necessary. Dont take her class!! She gives way more work then needed and its like she goes out of her way when grading to never give you the full points. She gets very annoyed when you ask her to clarify any of her instructions as well, when its her job to help clear up confusion!

Why this professor is still employed by SCCC is a mystery. One of the most unnecessarily complicated professors whose main goal is to discourage students from continuing on with studying history. Every goalpost that she could move she did; everything she could gleefully change, she did. The worst professor I have ever encountered. Stay away.
Way to much work given dont take her class its awful. She gives you 15 minutes per quiz. She wants everything perfect cant even make a typo. She never gives you full credit no matter how hard you try shell still find a way to take points off.
Two essays for the midterm that both require outlines and a final that also requires the outline that has to have 8 body paragraphs. No textbook but along with power points you have to do prep work which are articles that you have to read before doing the powerpoint. She also gives discussion boards and group work. A quiz for every chapter.
Be extremely careful with this professor. She's kind but extremely fixated on the materials she deems as creditable and will not give credit if you use other sources . Her units are well organized but confusing without context . A lot more reading than other classes which is fine but sometimes doesn't fully target the course.
Prof. Fox is VERY organized on her syllabus and strict of what sources you use for your ID Quizzes and Outline Charts. I had a difficult time taking in all the material that you are suppose to do on your OWN time (need like 4-6hrs/week). Overall if I had been in a better situation, I would've continued. You need to put time and focus for her class!
I took this course as a adult returning to get my education, I spoke to her about difficulty she told me it was a personal problem to her. I will never take her course again its insane they way she teaches
Look, I never want to bash on anyone but Barbara fox really is something else. Probably one of the most stressful and time consuming class I've ever taken. Her outline charts are not charts, they are papers designed to give you headaches. She has no respect for your time. She's prob a great lady, but don't take her as your professor. Trust me.
I am sorry that I took her class. She thinks that this is the only class that you are taking and has zero flexibility. She isn't clear and she doesn't care if you have to work to support your family and take care of your kids. Why do people have to beg for more time on tests that are complicated and take more time than she allows? DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Absolutely 0 respect for your time, you can do everything exactly the way she wants you to and will still barely receive a grade above 85-90. The work is very time-consuming. Tests are copy and paste from your study guide, and 15 minutes long. Honestly wish I used this site before making my schedule. Class is a total joke.
She's a nice lady, but that said she makes her class a lot harder than it needs to be. She constantly blames her students for the bad grades they receive but she hardly explains things clearly. She gives these outlines that are worth a lot, but she barely explains them and when you fail it's "the student's fault". Take another class!
I don't care if this is even your last option for credit. DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR FOX'S CLASS. Absolutely HORRID of a professor. She gives these outlines, that she never explains well and gets mad at her students for not understanding the format. If you desire to fail this course then be my guest because you will have trouble passing her class.
Please don't put yourself through this headache of a class. If you value your grades do not take this class. Barbara Fox has impossible grading standards and criteria that no one is able to uphold. She's extremely stuck up and hard to work with. She gives awful feedback and gives 15 minutes to do Exams. Joke of a class.
ONLY take this class if you have 10 hours to spare for each week's lesson. She's an extremely tough grader, I don't think I've ever seen her give out a 100. She's very bad at explaining things. She gives these outlines that are extremely time-consuming and when you don't understand them she gets frustrated with YOU. Don't waste your time.
Don't get me wrong, she's a nice lady but a horrible professor. Such a headache. She will come at your neck for coming in 5 minutes late to class, or if you touch your phone for even a second. Professor fox made the class 10 times harder than it should have been. She gives more homework than other other professor I know. She isn't clear with her words and she is all over the place. She makes the course up on her own and doesn't explain anything clearly. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER! If I could have picked another professor I would have.
Absolutely loved history in high school, it was my favorite subject so I was looking forward to take this class. Biggest mistake ever. So many sources per week that you have to read just for them to never get mentioned. She goes into things that don't even make sense in the subject. Sadly she ruined my love for history and will not take her again.
I have taken her for western civilization and I will just have to say that it was not good. She gives us a lot of homework which is very time consuming, like most people on this site say, she dose have impossible grading standards. Her outline charts were probably the worst. my advice to you is to do all the samplers, then you pass the course.
Barbara Fox is absolutely the worst professor i have ever had. If i could give her a zero i would. She gives no homework and only assigns hours of reading. the few things she does assign are unclear and overly complicated. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS save your self the stress and get a brick wall to be your teacher its they are the same thing.
If your major is heavily history based, I feel taking Professor Fox's class would be helpful. Otherwise, I would avoid taking her courses. It's very reading based and a lot of homework, I feel you would have to put aside 2 hours to do them. However, I feel the way she teaches can help someone who is a history major. Tedious lectures, very draining.
TERRIBLE!!! I would not recommend this professor to anyone!! She makes everything confusing, her notes are confusing and then she wonders why every class of hers is failing. She moves too fast and doesn't really assign homework but she does give it and it's multiple things at once. She doesn't even specify what we have to read specifically for hw.
OK, if you have limited time after classes, this class is not for you. She gives PowerPoint that you need to review and take notes from. Most of them have up to 15 slides. If you can handle a lot of work, you should be okay.
Took prof. fox back in 2021 and didn't know rate my professor was a thing. Coming back here to say: do yourself a favor. Don't take her class. You'd think you were taking an honors class at Harvard.
The amount of homework is insane. I am doing well in class but it is boring+really hard for a history class. She needs you to do the homework before every class and that is a power point and articles she assigns. Barely extra credit, 5 points on exam if you complete 24 study terms,1 paragraph each. Take her if you wanna prepare yourself for a Phd

She has a weird teaching style as you learn the material before class through hours of long homework and then ask you questions about it. Test aren't too bad but requires more studying than A&P... do not take her, YOU are the teacher in this course, not her.
I don't recommend taking this class at all. She is a hard grader who gives tons of homework with not enough time to finish reading it all. There is an essay test like every other week which is super annoying. I would not take her class. She also gives a whole lecture on the last day of class. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE, not worth it at all.
I was not ready to do hours of homework just for it to not be graded, gets mad for students not doing it. she only bases your grade on 6 tests that are worth 90% of final grade. I got an 88 on this class even after hours of studying to keep my GPA for my scholarship. MOST tedious class and professor I have EVER taken. Stay away from this professor.
She makes you work for your grade. I got an A because I studied, did the extra credit for test and put the time into the class. She graded your test pretty fairly imo, and test are not difficult if you study for a couple hours. It's a hard class. I probably could've passed without even attending class because everything is based off homework.. lol

THE 9% would take again is diabolical. I mean I wouldn't either but I did secure an A with a 94% in the course. It is a lot of homework and she grades the essay test pretty harshly. Take someone else, it is not worth the pain that this course causes. SO much information and dates to remember for the multiple choice.
I didn't think she was that bad as all the reviews! History is my worst subject but I thought her lectures could be interesting sometimes. There are 3 test and 2 essays throughout the whole semester, they really aren't bad as long as you put the work in to study for a day or two before. She is strict on absences though.
Oh boy! She doesn't seem to realize people are taking more than just her class, so she assigns roughly 2-3 hours of homework PER NIGHT! She assigns EVERYTHING WE LEARN for homework, then goes over only like 1/3rd of it in class the next day. I genuinely believe there isn't a worse professor at SCCC. Only take this class if you love being stressed.
Awful professor. Hands out homework like students have nothing else in their lives to do. On top of that, her expectations for the work are not clear. Do not take this class.
