Wonderful Teacher, But be prepared to work hard.
who ever wrote this comment for this class, are you foregeting that her class includes two quizzes but one is dropped reaserch paper and two essays in class and one at home has time for students outside of class and give great feedback on papers & essays

She is great and very demanding but...you will be happy with the results.
she is very demanding and devoted. She has time for all her students outside and in of class. She helps you a lot in your writing skills. She is very understanding, and nice.
Amazing teacher, but she is not an easy grader. If you are expecting an easy A class this is not the class for you. She teachs everything there is to know in the class.
Great Teacher! Shes tough, but fair. Very caring and personal. NOT an easy A.
I love her personality and she definitely makes class very interesting. She has a Masters degree in journalism and worked for NBC. She definitely knows her profession and loves it... maybe a little bit too much for my taste. I spoke to lots of other peopl
SUPER HARD!!! You will work day and night! It says this is a class for non-native English speakers which is b/s... She's a great teacher but it's extremely hard to get an A which she admits. If you just HAVE TO take English 1 don't take her. Way too hard!
Hardest English 1 class possible. She's very structured and nice but the work load is unbelievable. The research paper is super demanding and she's a very tough grader. This IS NOT a class I would recommend for non-native English speakers... way too hard!
well i say to add to my other comment from last year is she is understanding in if you don't speak english as first language..other then that three quizess, lowest dropped, home paper,in class, research, class final..work hard end up with c or b grade maybe D
the work load is pretty manageable, shes a great person, shes always willing to help and answer questions. shes only a tough grader because she has to be. if youre a student who needs their writing to be improved, she will help you.
She is very enthusiastic and helpful. She is not an easy grader, but she respects students.
NO! DONT EVEN TRY TO REASON WITH THIS BEAST OF ENGLISH!!!!!!!
Made me hate English! Even though the work load was not so bad, she graded so unfairly! Don't expect her to help you on anything! Do not take her!
she is passionate but at the same time shes kinda psychotic..do not take her...
excellent teacher. she is fair, and always willing to help her students. also warm very and caring. she laughs easily.
WARNING! Do not take this teacher in winter or summer session. She demands alot of work. I studied day and night and still had a hard time keeping up. Do not take this class if English is your second language. She is not clear and tends to surprise you in exams. Surviving her is a triumph.
Very warm teacher, helpful, intelligent. Class standards are more difficult than actual work. Great teacher. Tough class.
She is a great teacher, but she is very demanding, she opens up your eyes, she is a very hard grader. You will learn to love and hate her. She's smart, witty, funny, and strong.
don't take her unless you don't care about your grade. she gives C to almost everybody. exams are hard, too.
Ms. Gildner expects a LOT of work from her students, especially with the 10 page research paper, but she is VERY helpful and always willing to help you!!! - Jon Robnett
Professor Gildner's class provided an opportunity for me to focus on my life's passion, through the RESEARCH PAPER!!! She is an extraordinarily brilliant english professor... Anyone who has anything negative to say about her or her class is simply a lazy student without any passion for learning. She has graced my life; I love her for it.
Dont ask her for help!
Prof.Gildner is one of the most AMAZING teacher that I ever had in SMC.she might be hard on grades but if u showed her that u work hard she would help u out NO MATTER WHAT!aside from that she's one of the warm hearted person that I ever known. If it's not for her I would not be able to GET IN TO UCLA.U ROCK PROF!WE LOVE U!!def should take her class!
She is very nice person!!! BUT the class is very hard! Especially for ESL students. If you are not proficient in english, it is almost impossible to get "B" in this class.
If you really want an "A" you just have to get on her good side (if you know what I mean). Because I didn't crowd her with enthusiam, she seemed to come up with magical ways at why my writing was actually only worth a "B" in the end. DO NOT TAKE; many other teachers are far superior judges of literature.
Ms. Gildner is a pretty good instructor. She isn't a **** like most. She seems to actually care for her students and is understanding when you've got issues. The only thing is, she doesn't allow for late work EVER. But overall a great teacher i learned from her and would recommend her. Although you've got to pay attention, she picks on u otherwise
She is an awesome teacher. If you just follow directions and "answer the core call of the question" you can do well in her class. The course load is VERY manageable. She isn't an easy A, but you do learn a lot from her. She has a passion for teaching, and is a really warm-hearted individual. She can be a tough grader at times, but ask her for help.
Best english teacher ever. As an ESL student I can say that if you pay attention to lectures you can do very gooood in her cl****. Reading is very short but you learn so much from it. she is very helpful also. If you take her, you wont regreat it.
Prof Gildner is a rough, but amazing teacher. She also teaches at USC so the caliber of her work and expectations are high. 3 tests, lowest one is dropped. Even though the research paper is 10 pages, its on interesting topics. If you want to improve on your writing, get her. If you want an easy A...dont get her!Harder during short term semesters
ok.barbara gildner is a big NO NO!she is WAY WAY WAY over qualified to be teaching kids who just want to pass the damn class and not deal with "research papers" ever again. She is WAY to concerned and loves butting her nose in everyones life.IF u want to get a decent grade for your hard work and time, DONT TAKE HER!!
she is harsh on everybody! but has some favorites... don't take her!!!! seriously...
don't take her!!!! seriously...
Take if you want to ruin your transfer! Bad personality. She brags constantly about her law degree. She criticizes students who she feels are not good enough. She grades on a curve. Doesn't accept late work. Don't take because she will ruin your gpa and you won't learn much in her class because she doesn't know how to teach. She ruined my transfer.
very unfair professor.don't take her.she is not an understanding person. She ruined my transcript and GPA.I regret......
Professor Gildner is an amazing teacher. Even though the class might be a bit challenging in the beginnning, it's so beneficial and I feel like I can write extremely well now. She's really not harsh. Those people who say she is just want easy As. It's not that hard to survive the class. I'm actually a ninth grader and I passed with an A. TAKE HER!!
Harsh? Are you kidding me? She is fair. A good amount of writing (not a lot, but not a little). Of course she doesn't accept late work--you are in college!!! She will gladly assist you with your writing.
This prof. is the most unfair and rude person ever. This is my second year at SMC, and she is by far the worst teacher! I wish I could turn back time and NOT take her class!! If you care about your grade DO NOT take her! People who wrote nice things about her are her "favortite students" that she picks out every semester.
A professor with high demands but extremely vague descriptions. Most assignment doesn't even have anything to do with composition at all. If you like to write and analyze, don't take her for your English 1, she'll ruin your entusiasm!
WORST teacher ever! If u care about your gpa dont take her. she is unfair and her lessons doesnt have anything to do with the course! she is also afriad of technology!! DONT TAKE HER!!!
unfair? ruins your gpa? favorites? don't believe those comments! they're prolly just didn't do any of the assignments she asked, brought their journals/text books (when needed)/etc. I highly recommend her class, esp. eng 2. only 1 paper for the entire semester! but show up for her class or you'll be sorry in the end :P
shes very helpful and fun...i really liked her im taking her again for english 2
There are much better professors out there then her. Don't take her because of it "fits in your schedule" Find someone better. Her passive aggressive insults, and petty value judgements are rude and unnecessary. Also, international students beware! I'm not one but just an FYI.
No one is guaranteed an A in this class. But, if you follow the syllabus, you WILL become a better writer and will likely guarantee yourself at least a B. Maintaining a 4.0 is meaningless to the value of becoming a better writer. Prof. Gildner is one of few SMC teachers who can prepare students for an Ivy League transfer. Attendance is a must.
she tries to be helpful... im not sayin she isnt.. but she does lik puttin ppl on spot especially international ppl...i tink u really have to kno ur stuff in order to take her class cuz she doesnt help u witur writtin... she just scribbles some sloppy stuff in ur paper..... good teacher but i think its time for retirement.....
She divided the class into 3 sections; gender studies, race studies, and TECHNOLOGY? The first two were great, but radomly threw in the third unrelated one. I was an "A" student until we got to the research paper. She put too much criteria into it, and drained any fun out of my writing it. After that failed assignment, lost my appeal for the class.
Obsesses over international students making them feel uncomfortable. She will make many passive aggressive comments even if you miss one day. Even though she NEVER accepts late work, this semester she made an exception for only one student because she gave her an overly elaborate excuse, so unfair. Lost respect for her through course of the class
One of the best if not the best english teacher ever had. Prof. Gildner is very helpful if you hask for help, another thing if you are looking for an easy "A" don't take her class both her english 1 and english 2 classes are very challenging, and require time and effort. But if you want to learn I advise you to take her class.Prof Gildner is not on
she was horrible. i love english but she ruined it for me. she didn't teach me anything her books did i felt it was a waste to go to her class. all we ever did was read and listen to her go on about her life.
ok teacher, not an easy A. just get on her good side
Group projects? Posters with magazine clippings? This class makes me feel like I never left middle school. That aside, Even if I write something excellent with full use of her guidelines, no spelling or grammar errors whatsoever, she will fail me. She certainly picks and chooses who deserves to fail/pass based on how much like her they are.
I was extremely dedicated. I did everything she wanted and she still failed me. Anyone who gives her a good review obviously is on her good side, because if you don't agree with her bias, you fail. End of story.
Very liberal. Loves the words "gender code." Overall a pretty tough class.she acts like every assignment she assigns is easy and she's doing the students a favor. dedicated to her work though. the class is kind of like high school, group projects, asks where you were if you miss class, takes cell phones away, one person at the restroom at a time..etc
She tends to treat you like a high school student, because many still behave that way (trying to turn in late work knowing she doesn't accept it, etc.) Her grading is hard for an intro English class at a community college, but fair.
She's a VERY hard grader. Shes nicer to her favorite students. English WAS my favorite subject until I took her. Her research paper consists of using microfiche/microfilm.. When I told a librarian she required this he said she was crazy. He said most colleges and libraries are getting rid of microfiche/film and she needs to stick with the program and stop being afraid of today's technology. Research papers aren't that bad but she has to make them 20 times harder with all her requirements.
Keeps saying the work load is "light" but it really isn't. Assigns work as though there there are no other classes. Refused to accept a completed assignment a half hour late, resulting in a letter grade drop - lazy teacher. Don't take her class. Hope she gets fired.
Good Teacher. All you need to do is listen to her instructions and you'll do well. The work load is pretty light for English 2 but essays and other projects do count for a lot. Last part of the semester you get to do a play which is fun and gets you easy points. Attendance is important. i really enjoyed the class even though im not an english lover
She's hard, won't accept any late work and don't care what your excuse is. Class was pretty interesting though.
I took her for Eng 1 and she was phenomenal! She is so helpful and her lectures are real issues like race and stereotypes. Minus the research paper her work is kinda fun. If you turn in late work then she isn't the right teacher for you. ALWAYS BE ON TIME WITH HER! But she lets you ask questions and the agenda is always readily available. Very good
She is the worst teacher ever, she makes it especially hard on her students. Does like her favorites. Gives LOTS of work and expects you to turn in everything on time. No late work or excuses. Very Hard Grader. She gives work thinking that her students only have her class and she has no consideration for the other classes. DONT TAKE HER
The whole thing felt like a waste of time. She plays favorites, and picks on people she doesn't like. Don't expect her to listen if you have to miss a test for any reason, she doesn't allow make ups for any reason, even if you offer to take it early. Overall, a waste of time. Nothing new or cool, just stereotypical English teacher garbage.
I took her for Eng 1 and she was a good teacher! She is helpful to all of her students as well as her international students. She is willing to work with you in her office ours. BE ON TIME!
Terrified of technology, she won't even answer an email. She plays favorites, and picks on people she doesn't like.Don't expect her to listen if you have to miss a test for any reason, she doesn't allow make ups for any reason, even if you offer to take it early.Overall, a waste of time.Nothing new or cool, just stereotypical English teacher garbage
Don't take this class unless you are strong in English. Professor Gildner is very straightforward and compassionate about her students. Heavily focuses on class participation and attendance. She plays favorites. Moderately challenging class, but you will receive an A if you put in the effort.
I am a 4.0 student who transferred to Brown University on full scholarship. I took Prof. Gildner in my first semester at SMC. I got an A, but it was very hard and I argued with her about my papers in office hours. I consider her class the singular most important reason I succeed at Brown today. Her class is a must take for any ambitious student.
This class makes me laugh. Not because it's stupid or easy, but because I remember phrases like "Park it but don't lose it" or "The internet is sexy!" I loved that she had you call her, as I never call my professors anymore. Yes, she is a little tougher than preferred, but it pushes you to do better.
If you want to LEARN take her!!... her classes are interesting even though its a lot of work but you will sure end up learning... also she'll help you if you ask and she'll do it until you get it :D
At first I picked the easiest teacher on RMP to take ENG1 with but Professor Gildner ended up teaching the class instead. She was tough! At first the class didn't like her because she was a hard teacher but after it the class was over I ended up LEARNING SO MUCH!! Isn't that what school is all about? Sure, she is hard but I came out stronger.
This professor! She's extremely hard grader. I took the class thinking I was going to get A WHOLE LOT out of it. Extremely hard grader. The reading for quizes are ridiculous, over 40 pages. She'll ask you a stupid detail about ea. article, like a number? The papers 11+ pages. No critical analysis. An english class more than half people are gone.
She is passionate about English does try to be clear and helpful. However, I found it extremely difficult to figure out exactly what she wanted on a few assignments which severely affected my grade, and not for lack of effort or time spent in office hours speaking with her. Would not recommend her for Eng2. Take another professor.
I don't know why this professor gets low scores, but I love her! It is true though that she does play favorites, but you will be fine if you just do everything she says/stay in the shadows. Really easy class. She really cares about her students and wants them to have a love of reading. She is an amazing professor who will always be there for you!
Took this class in the summer. She assigned so much work. Readings and quizzes, essays, and a 12 page research paper. And she is not helpful at all.
Do I'm an international student, didn't even know what a thesis was prior to entering her class. She was extremely helpful, always told us to call her if we had questions, and had office hour before and after class. I learned everything i needed to know and more. She's the best dedicated teacher! But it's not an easy A!
If you want to learn how to write, don't take her. If you want to get an A, don't take her.I warned you. by far she is the worst teacher I have ever met. Choose Robert or any other. She is busying showing off her lawyer style and miss the point : teach students how to write. Actually she only took one year law school at UCLA long long time ago.
If you care about your education and want to improve your writing skills or vocabulary skills, I highly recommend Professor Gildner. I'm reading a lot of negative comments about her, but i can honestly say she is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She is not easy, that for sure. But in all honesty, she's awesome after you get to know her! ;)
She is a wonderful person. I took her for English 1 and my writing skills are very improved. She is very generous and will offer you extensive help as long as you ask. I recommend her.
She's annoying. She makes judgements and holds them like q grudge. She plays favorites and tries to sound as smart as she can. She is a terrible English teacher. 6th graders have a better grasp on the language. She assigns irrelevant projects and wants them to be as difficult as possible. She is basically the worst teacher ever. Do not take her!
She is so unspecific for example I asked her if when needed to disprove our counter argument and she went on for 10 min and never answered the question She is an incredibly hard grader she grades her first essay as hard as her last even though she hasn't taught you anything yet and it's worth 10% of your grade She assigns a 12 pg essay
Biggest complaint: she does not know the subject she is "teaching". She insists that all forms of be, denote passive voice, and therefore demands their elimination from your writing. She does not understand simple concepts of style. She is on a crusade for gender roles, and racism. She punishes a student who does not obey her nihilism of English.
This was the worst learning experience I've ever had. I've never had issues with any of my professors nor their teaching style but Gildner's teaching methods are horrible. She is never clear on the assignment requirements & on top of that she WILL NOT answer questions from students until class is over. She'll say "Park it dont loose it" Not helpful
I've always loved writing, but well, this teacher almost made me loathe it. I picked her because I was told she was good with international student-- NOOO. Very tough grader, lectures are boring and useless, assignments are confusing. I didn't learn anything. I wish she could at least avoid typos, but every mail and handout is full of them. Avoid.
Professor Gildner is the most amazing professor I have ever had. She helped me believe in myself. She is the MOST dedicated professor I have ever had. I had an amazing class and really bonded with the other students. Professor Gildner wanted us to support each other. I learned important life lessons in her class that will stay with me forever..
100% recommend this class. Professor Gildner is super kind, friendly & very straight forward with every assignment. She rarely assigns homework however you must read the assigned reading pages to do well on the quizzes. Only 2 essay papers assigned the whole semester. She will help you with anything you need whenever. WONDERFUL CLASS!!!!
Easy class. Doesn't assign much homework except a few textbook readings. Great teacher overall. Will answer any questions you have. She is very knowledgable and clear with what she assigns. Also super nice and friendly. Would take class again anytime.
I genuinely feel smarter after taking Professor Gildners class. Doesn't do many lectures but the ones she does are VERY INTERESTING!! Never really assigns homework. All you have to do is study the readings for her quizzes. She's very wise and will help you with absolutely anything! Very kind and funny at times too
Professor Gildner is a good professor. She grades in a way that will prepare you for the rest of your college writing experience. She will meet with you, before class or during office hours to assist with your assignments. As long as you don't wait to the last minute on your assignments and you put effort in this is a very passable class.
This class is very straight forward. Gildner is VERY sweet & will help you with anything & will always answer any questions. rarely assigns homework except a few readings. lectures are very interesting and relevant. honestly not a difficult class as long as you do the few homework assignemts. She is really kind & will always keep you interested!!!!
I took her English 1 over summer and English 2 the following semester. Great environment, creates a good classroom vibe. I enjoyed English 1 with her so much I decided to take her for English 2. She is not the easiest grader but gives good feedback. Is passionate about helping students. Be ready to read, Do the assignments and you'll be fine.
Professor Gildner made the class very fun. She tries to expand your horizon to theater. She is a very sweet teacher and very helpful when asked. Most student tend to hate that she does not allow cellphone use but if your in class you shouldn't be using your cellphone anyway!
Took her during the Winter semester. She gives a lot of stuff to read- be prepared to print out everything and use those exact words. Basically, just don't try to think outside of the box on anything besides the first essay. You'll need to be able to use resources outside of class to pass. Very helpful but I can't say I learned anything new.
she assigns a lot of outside readings and her quizzes are tough. There is a research paper assign during the semester which consumes a lot of time outside of class.
Professor Gildner is a great professor She really gives great feedback on your essays But be prepared to read . If you read all the assigned articles you should be fine . She does assign a 12 page research paper . But she gives you 2 months to do it . she helps you along the way and really breaks down the research paper . Text book is mandatory
Ask her for clarification. You'll need it. You need to know exactly what she wants, so make the effort to try to get clear instructions. Force her to read your papers before they're due, I wish I did this. However, she is lenient and understanding, but don't take her kindness for weakness. Arrive on time, do your work on time, write notes, listen.
She is by far the best Professor that I have ever had, this is the second time I have a class with her. She is really clear since the begging of the class of what she expects from you. The feedback you receive is extensive and thorough, although her writing is unclear at times, you can just ask her to clarify and she will be happy to.
Come to class everyday She will tell you a few things that will be on quizzes so pay attention!!! Make sure to get the required textbook. Put effort into essays and plays. Lots of group work. If you're a slacker don't take her class.
simple class. She has 3 units and for each unit you're assigned a list of readings. As long as you read those readings, you will pass the tests. The essays are pretty simple too and she assigns a 12 page research paper at the end of the semester which takes a lot of outside class time but she gives you 2 months to do it. If ur lazy, don't take her
She is a wonderful and motivational person. Her teaching style is unique, and her class is pretty simple if you read all the required materials. She will assign some out of class projects, and she really knows how to push you out of your comfort zone. She is a good teacher.
Professor Gildner is a breath of fresh air. I had her for both English 1 and English 2. She is a wonderful teacher and mentor. She will listen to you and what your needs are to learn and grow. She really cares about all of her students. The grade you get in the class is what you put into it. If I had the choice I would take her over and over.
That class is very insightful and beneficial for your academic career. But there is a 12 page essay during the second unit where you have a month to complete it, but its very doable.
This class isn't hard if you go to class everyday. You do not get so much homework it's just articles you have to read for quizzes they are not hard. The professor is really helpful she fives good feedback and very nice but she is a tough grader.
I'm international student and I took ENG1 in my first semester. Great teacher. She really encourages you to ask questions. Very clear instructions. Even if you don't understand sth she willingly help you. Extremely intelligent woman. She requires you to work, but it's college so...
Great professor! A lot of homework but she gives great feedback!
Great professor. Professor Gildner is a really nice person. She always answers questions.
She is a great professor who gives an amazing feedback. I will have to spend pretty a lot of time on her assignments but it's worth it. Knowledge and experience from this class helped me with my other classes.
Professor Gildner is one of the most knowledgeable instructors in Santa Monica College. Her class is full of positive energy. She is very motivating, helpful, and patient, at the same time very professional. I highly recommend her English 1 class!!!
as long as you do your work you'll pass. if you enjoy english its a good class for you, 2 essays, about 3 exams, not a lot of homework. the readings are good and you dont have to read a lot, attendance is very important, tough grader but overall good.
Professional and very helpful. This is my favorite Professor by far. She was making sure everyone knew exactly what they needed to succeed. Amazing
Prof. Gildner is an amazing teacher. One of the best professors at SMC by far. Extremely knowledgable and gives great feedback. She gives every student a more than fair chance to succeed. I would hands down take her class again for English 2, but unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts I was unable to. Highly recommend taking her class.
There is a lot of homework. It's easy, but I never felt like I was learning, just being forced to do busy work for no reason. She doesn't teach you to analyze literature but makes sure that you can. Also, her handwriting is so bad that you'll never be able to read the board or her essay/test notes. She doesn't lecture & you have to put on a play.
She is so rude. She makes the most passive aggressive remarks and mean looks for being a minute late. She made us go see a play that cost $50-$100. She only gave about 5 lectures, less than a minute long, all semester. Its an easy class, so you can definitely pass it, but it will be a very unpleasant experience and you wont learn anything.
Literally made me feel like everything I learned in high school was useless. You wont know your grade until the end of the semester and being in this class was probably the worse and English was my favorite subject. Be prepared for a 12 page MANDATORY research paper that is in no way related to your final AND multiple 4-5 page mini essays .
Despite her reputation as a tough grader, I actually didn't think her class was too difficult; just a quite a bit of reading and a few papers every now and then. I only got a B because I was extremely lazy at the beginning of the semester.
Least favorite professor for my first year at SMC. If you don't turn in a passing 12 page research paper at the end of the semester, you are not gonna pass the class. You won't know what grade you have in the class because she doesn't use Canvas. During the research project, she only accepted on thesis which was the one she came up with. DON'T TAKE
As a first year student coming out of Dr. Gildner's course, I felt prepared to transfer to future Universities. Most of the students who slacked off in class were the same ones who complained. Her class is difficult but the students who take her are survivors who have an advantage over those who don't take her. If you want a challenge this is it.
Prof Gildner is a good professor not gonna lie. She is nice, caring, and wants you to do good. But the workload is a ton. There are 3 Unit quizzes based on readings and she drops the lowest score if you read there relatively easy. Second, there is 1 group project which is easy, and the hardest is 1 research paper. Some take-home essays and 2inclass
Professor Gildner is a sweetheart! She's super understand. The class is easy as long as you're in class and paying attention. Take notes! she'll give you some answers for quizzes. There are few group projects but nothing too harsh. she also has a little helper (doggo) that comes in during class but doesn't bother.
Dont take. Shes pretty intense and likes to put people on the spot. Lectures are useless. Didnt feel like I actually learned anything. Makes you write long journals and read them to the class. Makes you put on a play. It felt like the class was just for her entertainment, not for us to learn. Lots and lots of writing. Doesnt respond to emails.
Worst Professor at SMC. Don't take ENGLISH 1 with her. She is sarcastic and don't answer student's questions respectfully. She did not "trust" on Canvas system. Never add your grades on Canvas. She send emails with daily schedule which is very confusing and not clear. She is the opposite of a caring professor.
Difficult teacher. Assignment instructions are often unclear, and she often introduces multiple assignments at a time, which is very stressful and confusing. She makes it difficult for students to approach her with questions, and it is also impossible to view your grade through Canvas. If you take this class, be prepared to write. A lot.
Not the best choice during Covid, especially if English is not your best subject. Technologically illiterate and does not know how to properly input grades on Canvas. Expects students to invest nearly 100 hours on a single tear-wrenchingly boring research paper alone. "Lectures" consist of going over assignment instructions for only 5 minutes.
She's so unclear. The worst professor ever.
She started the class by claiming to be a very private person & that she is skeptical of using our email platform through canvas, then proceeded to read off our personal phone #s as our attendance. She will make you feel dumb for asking legitimate questions & loves to interrupt you during your presentations. My least favorite professor, ever.
Feels like an elementary school level class. Doesn't have leeway with missed assignments though?
I didn't like this class at all. professor is very unclear, and i say that because she doesn't give clear instruction. you also won't know what your grade is because she doesn't even use canvas. gives way too much work in a short period of time. doesn't even lecture, and when she does, its less than 5 minutes. don't take this class.
Rude, non-accommodating, and condescending. She managed to make me hate my best and favorite subject. 0/10 would not recommend.
This is one of the most awful classes I have ever taken. Professor Gildner had a very arrogant attitude against the students, calling them out in class and being disrespectful. The course readings that was assigned to this class was outdated, and one of the assignments called "gender switch" where right up problematic.
full of busy work and particular on things that don't demonstrate writing skills
Professor Gildiner is very egotistical as she talks about all her achievements and constantly references her credentials from UCLA and Stanford. Her first assumption about you as a student is that you're incapable of being independent or following orders. Her tech skills bog down the class and hates past tense more than your inability to listen.
Prof Gildner is the worst prof I've had at SMC. Assignments are vague and she does not give clear grading criteria. Tests contain questions which are either subjective or worded so poorly as to make them extremely difficult to answer. Rude to students who ask for clarification, brusque and dismissive when answering questions. Do not take the class.
Instructions for papers were not very clear
SHE DONT POST SCORES ON CANVAS (YOU WILL NEVER KNOW YOUR SCORE UNLESS YOU ASK HER IN PERSON). ONLY ACCEPT HOMEWORK IN PERSON NO MATTER WHAT AND DONT GIVE ANY OPPORTUNITIES. YOU ARE FORCED TO GO TO CLASS BECAUSE SHE DONT EVEN POST THE ASSIGMENTS ONLINE. I DONT RECOMMEND
Professor Gildner clearly cares very much about her students. If you have an issue going on outside of class that might be affecting your ability to attend class, she is very willing to work with you to find a fair solution to the situation. Be sure to not skip the assigned readings, the quizzes will be very difficult if you don't!
The worst teacher at Smc. She will drop students after 3 absences, she dont post anything on Canvas, everything needs to be in person. If you want to know your current grade you will have to go ask her, she make students feel ashamed when they asked questions. Really rude teacher
It's the only W on my transcripts. She's a terrible teacher. I did extra work to be ahead and went to office hours, she had the whole class lined up and didn't even have the time to see me. Tells you there's still hope for you to get an A and then you receive your paper graded C. I'm pretty sure the whole class was graded C.
In the first couple of classes, she seemed very sweet, but that faded away as time passed. I don't like that she doesn't use Canvas to show you your grade, which doesn't help when you're a full-time student.
Super sweet, understanding, chose interesting things to read but doesn't use Canvas at all & doesn't answer emails, so if you don't show up to class you are lost and won't know your grade. Quizzes were just vocab and were easy if you studied. It's the exams/essays that were hard because the prompts were confusing she didn't give the best feedback.
Personally, after reading these other reviews, I can get how some people might struggle in her class. But if you
Completely tech free, can be refreshing but can also be frustrating and impractical. Seemed very emotional for a professor (easily irritated). I enjoyed the material but some of the exams didn't make sense and didn't relate to what we were focused on in class. I don't regret taking the class, but I wouldn't choose to be a student of hers again.
I had an outstanding experience with Professor Gildner; she is very skilled at teaching argumentative writing. She is very against using the internet, and she assigns a lot of book work, but it ends up not being that much in the end. She's also strict about deadlines. Just do your best when taking in-class notes.
