Hard class but she is willing to help and offers countless oppurtunities to ask for help or raise your grade. A little on the talkative side, but a funny person and a good professor.
Insane.
Barbara John is a crazy lady, but she is actually pretty funny and a great professor! She is SO willing to help with any questions or problems you have. She is definetly the easiest ECO professor. Just show up to class, do some Excel assignments and easy H.W. and you'll be prepared for her tests.
Not always the easiest, but very fair. Will spend hours helping if needed. One of my favorite profs.
This class is hard. Her lectures are interesting, but sometimes she goes through the material extremely fast. Plan on attending class, because if you miss, you'll be in trouble. The tests are based on the homework packets and the demos (everything you go over in class) but it's definitely a tough course.
This class is not hard. It would be if she didn't let you retake tests and give extra credit, but with those it makes it very easy.
very very helpful, one of the best teachers in the business school!
she is hilarious and very willing to help whenever needed. if you put forth the effort you can do fine in her class
No Comments
Very helpful in a class many people find difficult. Put forth an effort and build a relationship with her and you will do fine and have fun at the same time.
Doesn't teach understanding of the material, just blindy shows you how to do her worksheets. One of the worst classes I ever took, and I got the highest grade in the class. She is, however, a nice person.
She's not that bad of a teacher. She tries to make classes fun...or at least as fun as economics can be. Her tests aren't bad as long as you come to class and pay attention plus she also curves.
She is the worst teacher I had in my four years at U.D. There is no organization to the course and she completely overcompensates for her lack of teaching ability by making the tests difficult. Stay away from her class at all costs. I attended class everyday and can't type more than a paragraph about something new I learned from the course.
Tuff class so deffinitly go becuase the tests are based purely around her terrible worksheets, nice lady but just very weird
She is AWESOME!! If the class agrees they're having a busy week or are confused about the material she will move the test date. Study her packets and you're fine! Go to her review sessions, and ask for help if you need it shes more than willing and loves giving extra credit... TAKE HER!!!
Extremely helpful, funny, and nice. She has a crazy sense of humor which kept me interested in class. This class is cake as long as you do you work, come to class, and if you still need help shes always available.
BJ lives for teaching is on campus from probably 7AM-12AM. I had Collier for 203 and got a C because everything was multiple choice. BJ gives a lot of assignments but they just like tests. There is so much extra credit which is the whole reason why I got an A-. Final exam policy helped me too on a test I bombed but the final took me 6 hours.
Took her for 204 and came back again to take her for 461. I JUST took her final and it took me 5 hours but it'll probably be my highest grade. Very nice and always available for help. Offers TONS of extra credit that's actually percentage points and not bull crap grade points. Take her if you want to have fun, whether you care about econ or not.
Had her for ECO-204 and got an A- as well. Tests are tough, gives enough extra credit that anyone can get an A. Tests have way too much material on them and no one ever finishes in time. Don't count on doing well without extra credit. I failed half the tests and got an A-. She is always around for help. Best econ teacher, but econ is horrible.
This woman is absolutely out of her mind. I have no idea what she is talking about half the time, and her exams are impossible to finish. Yeah she curves, but not enough to make up for the 20+ points on the exam you never even get to attempt to do. Avoid at all costs.
Great lady. very funny. willing to help. I was super excited when I got A's on my first two tests, but the following exams were so ridiculously long and tedious (can be 10 pages of graphing and calculations) that I could barely skim over half the test. The exams are similar to packets she gives you, but they are still too much to do in one sitting.
I have never had a professor as dedicated as Barbara John. She will bend over backwards to help her students. Econ and this class is hard, especially the tests but she offers a TON of extra credit.
You are literally an idiot if you don't get an A in this class. BJ is the most accomadating prof ever. She goes out of her way t ohelp students at all costs. She has plenty of office hours and review sessions. She offers so much extra credit and a cumulative replacement exam that can replace every single test you took. Great professor and class.
I had her for Micro & Macro econ, and I've never had a more helpful professor. Even after graduation, she was always there to help. Her class was tough, but fair, and she was always available to ask questions of and get any kind of assistance with her class.
Aviod. Does not care about student success, even though most of the ud econ profs are bad, this one is terrible.
The tests are difficult and long. You will need to study to get an A in her class. However, BJ is seriously so helpful. Finals week.. I've never seen a teacher put so much time and effort into helping students. TAKE HER if at ALL possible!
BJ seems strange, and she is...but you will be hard-pressed to find a professor who cares as much about her students as BJ! The tests are long and hard, but she is very willing to help you! There is a lot of extra credit offered as well.
Very good professor that I have met in UD! class is not that hard than you heard! if you pay attention you would find the test is pretty the same as her handout!
BJ is a great prof. at first i thought the class would be impossible, but after getting past her crazy personality it is actually pretty easy. She is an extremely laid back and understanding professor, always is available to help, and offers A TON of extra credit - up to 10 points on the final course grade. good prof, easy class.

If studying abroad, do not ever go to the site that B. John is attending, she believes it to be a dictatorship and somehow make one of the most gorgeous countries you've ever seen (Spain) be a place you'll never want to see again. Not worth the $12,000 you spend to be there
She was the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely scatterbrained and does not follow any sort of "plan" for the class. I enjoyed Econ 203 but this was a nightmare. I did poorly on all of the test but with all of her extra credit I pulled off a good grade.
Horrible. Made me not want to study abroad anymore. Not only does she make through you sit through a night class from 8:30-10:30 but she insists on boring you with her pointless stories. She'll kick you out if your talking or on your phone. I think the Business School gave her this class cause they were sick of listening to her talk about herself
Ignore any negative comments on here. If you go to class and follow along with her handouts which are spitting images of the tests, you'll do fine! She really cares about the students and loves helping you during her office hours. Take her! (Don't buy the textbooks) She may be scatterbrained sometimes, but if you are engaged it will pay off.
BJ is a great professor, and I really loved her classes- ECO 203, 460 & 461. Do not buy the textbook for any of them. Her lack of organization and comedic nature can make it hard to follow along sometimes, but if you go to class and do the packets, it's not that hard. Take her classes!
She's a trip. First few classes I had a headache from her crazy lectures, but she really grows on you. So helpful and tests are almost verbatim of wksts. Don't buy the book. Very interesting and knows her stuff. Overall, great teacher! You WILL learn w her & almost guaranteed get an A if you do extra credit (show up to movies). Go to class-it helps
I would not recommend Professor John, she is the most confusing and boring professor I've ever taken. She does offer extra credit but for each absence, she take away one extra credit point. Her lectures are slow and repetitive, and she uses terminology that nobody understands. If you want an A, you must put in an insane amount of work.
Active participation and basic Excel skill is all you need to pass - up to 12% EC for attendance, chance to retake either test. Course grade was 2 exams each 30% and 40% attendance (plus 12% EC). I dislike her extremely liberal attitude but it will benefit you emotional babies out there. Takes no excuses, you can't one-up her on any life problems.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She does not care about her students and assumes she is always right. Very rude and disrespectful. Her exams are impossible to finish. They also take two class periods. Her lectures make zero sense. Only benefit is the extra credit, so attend class and movies
Highly recommend especially if you are in the BMV/BEES ILLC. She is very funny and fun to be in class with. She does make you work for a good grade but its not horribly hard.
BJ is either loved or hated by her students. She has a very blunt and unique personality. She has no filter. Despite that, she is nice, caring, and funny. She loves her students and if you go to her during office hours, she will help you. She is very fast paced, so you cannot be napping in her class. There are tons of EC opportunities (up to 12%).
Tests are nearly impossible to finish especially for her 50 minute classes. Does offer a cumulative retake before final exam that can replace previous test grades however.
She is so quirky and keeps class interesting on a hard subject. Gives you ample opportunity to learn the material and is extremely helpful in office hours. Her tests are rather long, but you know what material will be covered on the test so they're ok. Added bonus, she gives extra credit points that add on to the overall percentage of your grade.
Honestly best teacher I've ever had. She cares so much about her students and truly wants us to succeed in her class. She offers so much extra credit up to a whole letter grade. Study really hard for the tests is my advice I studied for approximately 8+ hours for them and got A's on most of them.
Does not know how to teach clearly; you have to teach yourself on your own time by using the book. Goes on tangents every two minutes so we never learned what we were supposed to that day.
The class was hard but professor is very nice and helpful!
BJ is a really neat lady. She is passionate about this subject and passionate about helping her students succeed. However, you MUST put the work and effort in or else you are going to hate this woman/class. Long exams for 50 minute classes, but are doable if you study hard. Always willing to help and tons of EC options. Not an easy A, worth it tho
go to class, do well on the cumulative replacement exam and go to all the extra credit then its an easy A. also go to her office hours for help on class actions and you will do well.
Rambles forever(nobody cares if you breast fed your kid till 1st grade! TMI). Her test are incredibly long. Grades super biased. Takes off points for dumb things like putting periods at the end of sentences in Powerpoints when she was the one who wanted you to put full sentences in. Overall just an awful experience.
Overall she is a great teacher. However, don't take this class if you aren't prepared to work hard. Her tests are difficult and she expects nothing less than your best. But she does offer a cumulative exam that will boost your grade immensely if you do well. Overall she is difficult, but ultimately she is a great teacher.
Would not recommend taking, she rambles and makes it VERY hard to get a good grade. She acts like her class is the only class you have. Calls people outs and embarrasses them in class. Will not take again, ever.
She offers a lot of extra credit by watching movies that relate to the class. You can earn up to 12-14 extra credit points. She is very funny and makes learning economics really interesting. She is my favorite professor. There is a lot of work however she really prepares you for the exams. The exams are exactly like the packets she hands out.
This is my third time taking Professor John for economics. I had her for Macro and Micro Econ. I love her way of teaching. She offers a lot of extra credit and really wants you to succeed.
One of the weirdest professors I've ever had, but really cool and caring. Easy to get off track and talk about other things. Her tests are exactly the same as the homework- literally. Follow along in class, whatever she writes on her examples, you write it too! Home work felt like a lot, just read the instructions. Many extra credit opportunities.
I LOVED BJ (Call her BJ or Barbara John NEVER Barbara). I took 2 of her upper level classes as a non-business major and they were pretty difficult but she is always willing to help students so go to office hours! Also you can earn 10+ points (% points) in extra credit which can save your grade. If you fail a test start studying for the Cume.
The course was pretty difficult and she definitely makes you work, but I would definitely recommend her as a professor to anyone. She's very smart, and interesting material, I learned a lot. It's important to go to class, in class work, and pay attention, she's a strict grader but will always meet with you and help you out. Lots of extra credit .
BJ really cares about her students and always offers extra credit. There is a lot of points for class actions that are literally just reading the textbook which make for very easy points. Go to class , take notes, and do homework and you will be fine
BJ is the best professor! Sad that I only had her for one class. Provides everything you need to succeed. Truly teaches what she knows. This class does make you work, but it is well worth it! BJ is a UD gem and you should take her for all possible classes.
Biggest waste of money at a UD class. You will not learn anything useful for the real world. Her tests are on Saturday mornings and are as stressful as the Accounting Block exams. She will waste 49 minutes of class and then throw 3 classes worth of material in the 50th min. This class is memorization not actual learning. Do not waste your time or $
BJ is a really nice and caring woman. The problem is that for the first like month and a half we were doing things not even remotely related to the course. All the tests were take home, except the final (which was super hard). She does offer an absurd amount of extra credit, so if you do bad on hw's or tests, you can make up for it with the ec
BJ is definitely an interesting prof but she does really care about you and want you to succeed. Her lectures are kind of sporadic but the exams are exactly like the homework she gives. Definitely some work but in my opinion an enjoyable class.
A really easy course - just show up, watch documentaries, and do a very weird assignment at the end of the semester. She sometimes said really weird and rude things, which was really offputting. When we had a guest speaker, she told us that we weren't allowed to go to the bathroom and if we did, we should take our bags and just leave
By far the WORST teacher I have had during my time. Tests are 3-4 hours long (good luck finishing), you need to be in class in order to get the notes (she doesn't post them), and the homework is awful. I am a decent student I would say, but this class was more demanding then both of my accounting classes. Extra credit is the only way you get out ok
BJ's class is a lot of work, but she is a fantastic professor. Very willing to spend time outside of class to go over work and help with getting answers. But if you skip class, you WILL NOT PASS. She goes over practice homework in class, which matches the homework, which matches the exam. Exams are long, but make sense if you attend class.
BJ is kind of a nut and her teaching style is definitely something you have to get used to. But I found it easy to get an A in her class because she provides so many extra credit opportunities, and she also has replacement exams. Her exams are set up almost identically to the in-class work. I'd recommend BJ.
Go to office hours and extra credit. She gives many opportunities to raise grade. Exam is exactly like in class work and can even replace poor exams.
Barbara John is a hiliarious professor, her lectures are engaging. Her class is a lot of work but you learn a lot and there is so much extra credit that failing is almost impossible if you try even a little bit.
Love BJ, but she was a little all over the place for ECO 204 over ECO 203. Lots of extra credit, same format of class, but seemed like she struggled to explain things well sometimes. Also went on tangents more often. Cannot say I learned as much second time around. Awesome prof, but maybe look into taking her for 203 and not 204.
BJ is the most out-of-pocket professor in the world. She will say something completely unrelated to the lesson that completely shocks the entire class, then never acknowledges what she said. She is very nice, funny, and smart. Tests are hard, especially in a 50-minute class. She offers a ton of extra credit. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS OR YOU WILL FAIL!
BJ is definitely a character. There will be times when you feel like this is the greatest class in the world, and others when you hate it. Extra credit is huge in this class but I have found myself spending hours upon hours outside of class making up for poor execution inside the classroom. You will pass this class, but I would not recommend it.
BJ is awesome, just come in with a good attitude and use your resources to do the best you can and you will not only get an A easily but will also learn a ton.
This professor is absolutely crazy. She says and does whatever she wants. She will waste all class talking a bunch of nonsense and then try to cram everything in the last 5 minutes. If you want to save your grade be prepared to give up your whole weekend to go to review sessions on a Saturday and retakes on a Sunday. And you still learn nothing!
She's insane. She says the most unfiltered stuff, doesn't stay on topic, and jumps from one thing to the next. You won't learn anything from her so you will need to go to all of the SI sessions. Her tests are nearly impossible because she doesn't know how to teach. She does have extra credit opportunities, without those you would most likely fail.
Not sure how there are any good reviews, lectures had nothing to do with the test, we didn't know what was on the test until 2 days before, and had a plethora of useless homework assignments. She holds study sessions where she just talks about herself the entire time and the only way to get a good grade is wasting hours of your time on EC stuff.
BJ is so funny, but her tests are very hard. Go to class or you will not pass. She offers extra credit opportunities so go to them.
Probably hardest professor I have had at UD. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR $. Tries to act like she cares for her students but does not at all. Told my class before the 1st exam that most people will fail all her exams due to how hard they are and how much time they take. She gives out tons of EC because she knows she has to or most people would fail.
Such a hard class. Failed every exam. Will only survive with the extra credit opportunities she provides.
Tests were impossible and lectures were pointless. Have fun studying for hours and still failing every exam. The only positives are that you can replace bad exams and there are many extra credit opportunities to keep you from failing.
One of the worst professors you can possibly have here. Is she a nice lady and passionate about teaching? Of course. However, the amount of work that is expected of you is extremely unrealistic and borderline delusional. Be ready to constantly stress over the 3, 20 page packets given to you per week and being in her office 5 times a week. Good Luck
Class seemed overall unfair. You will need to spend 12-14+ hours watching seemingly unrelated movies for extra credit if you want to get an A. 3 fieldtrips throughout the semester which you generally leave around 6:45am or 7am for. Insane amount of work for an economics elective.
I DO NOT recommend BJ for micro or macro. Attendance is mandatory- even when sick, and she will still mark you absent and take away an EC point. HW packets and tests are THICK packets and very difficult. She offers test re-takes for all of her sections, but those are held on weekend mornings. She also makes you take 2hr book tests outside of class.
BJ is hilarious and offers plenty of extra-credit opportunities, plus test retakes. Attendance is mandatory, and her lectures can be confusing, but she's a very interesting person. As long as you stay on top of the work, you'll do fine in her class.
BJ is such an interesting professor. She's very funny and enjoyable in class but can get off track a lot talking about politics or whatever her opinion is. This class had so much work and effort but it is worth it for a good grade, she gives so many extra credit opportunities to get points back, and offers help outside of class all the time.
Kind of a tough class. She has a bunch of extra credit, but they are all given by watching movies with her at specific times outside of class. So if you don't really do stuff outside of school, she's probably good since you can do that, but otherwise you might want to avoid. A lot of people like her, a lot of people don't. Either way, good luck.
BJ. She has one of the best personalities of any professor at UD. But her lectures suck. I absolutely hated this class. The exams are tough, but until the final she offers retakes. Study the high scoring exams she releases after the initial exam and retake. They're usually near identical. Sweet lady though. She wants you to do well.
She gives a ton of extra credit, so if you do not get a good grade in her class it is all your fault. Her lectures are informative but mostly pretty lackluster. She is a funny, relatable human but overall I think she is a good professor and a good human who really cares about her students.
Entirely busy work and super confusing. Lots of opportunity for extra credit though
