not many profs are as interested in the students the way she seems to be. really wants people to do well, will help you tons if you ask. lectures can be a bit slow, but youve got to show up if you want a decent grade. posts slide but not the notes for them.
So fabulous! The tests and assignments are hard, but she makes it easy to understand them. If you don't get it go see her - she'll make sure you do. Totally went the extra mile for our class, even if some of them don't think so... Take ANYTHING she teaches, but be prepared to study and work.
Do it! In four years here she's the best ever. You REALLY have to think to do good on the assignments, but she will totally help you if you ask. I'm not doing super-good or anything, but that's because I didn't ask for her help early. So, so, so super easy to talk to.
going to class is a must. on the midterm she tested from both the text and lectures, but mostly lectures. theres lots of work though - a paper, proposal, two exams and three assignments. show up, make an effort, do the work and you'll be ok. id like to see her post notes with the lecture slide, but i'll take classes from her again.
If you want an easy class where you will know more than the prof. this is the one for you. Although, she is very friendly and helpful, if you ask her anything outside of the text book, you will get a muddled, confusing answer. But, I guess that's why they placed her teaching an intro to Archaeology class.
lots of work, got to go to class, but shes a normal person who doesnt treat you like an idiot when you ask her something. will really help you if you talk to her one on one. will take her classes again.
BEST EVER!! Lectures are well done, not too much info, posts her slides so you know what to study, answers any questions, always avail by email, will help you when you need it. Lots of reading, but she'll tell you what's important. Exams are not easy and there's lots on them, but totally worth it to take the class from her.
AWESOME! Helpful, nicest I've ever met, not full of herself like some profs. Maybe cause she's still new? Whatever - she totally made my term and I hope she comes back in the fall.
Doing this course by distance, so I don't know how she'd be in a class but she responds to questions quick and gives clear explanations and directions.
There was a mixup in our online course material so we had the wrong assignment. She worked it out and graded everithing again and we got to keep the highest of the marks. She's fair, answers questions clearly and quick.
Easy to talk to (by email), answers questions clearly and fast. Assignments look easy, but she looks for detailed info. She gave me lots of guidance on how to write these kind of papers when I asked for it.
She responded to message really fast, explained things so I understood and helped me figure out how to write the essays. The exam was harder then I thought it would be, and really detailed.
online class so you do your own reading but she explains things if you ask and answers emails fast. essays look easy but she wants more detail than i expected.
Online class, clear guidance, good feedback on essays (once I figured out how to get at it!), details are important.
online class quizzes and essays ask for more detail then i thought they'd need she gives lots of feedback on the essays and lots of information about how to right papers in university no breaks on turning stuff in late - big penalty for late essays wont tell you whats on the final exam - don't bother asking
Took this class online, she wants very specific answers but what she is asking for isn't in the essay questions. Be sure to email her to get her input for assignments, it's the only way I was able to get a passing grade. She is very helpful if you reach out to her, but the class is very difficult if you don't.
This was an online course and she apparently has to teach it the way it was given to her. There is a ton to remember, and the essays were hard but she was great about answering questions and helping guide me so I know what to write about. She answers emails really fast, and is very willing to explain things in detail if I didn't get it.
essays look simple but u need to be really detailed . make sure u give definitions for terms. ask her if u dont get it. she'll answer right away and help u decide what to include. she will do pre review of your essay if you ask but wont tell you what to write - she will jsut ask u questions about stuff she think s u are missing.
Lots to read, lots to remember. Didn't understand feedback on my essays until I aksed her for more detail, but it made sence once we talked about it.
tests are really specific, based mainly on the textbook quizzes have time limit
i took this class in summer and failed from all the essays. the fall one is totes dif then the summer one better notes discusions instead of essays. I actually like this one. way easier to understand and less time.
Answers messages really fast, gave lots of help narrowing down essay writing stuff, guided our online discussions so we talked about how 'race' isn't real but how its still such a big deal in politics and stuff. I got more into it then I thought I would. Loved that I could do it on my own time and still work.
easy reading but lots ot remember. use both the notes and the textbook. online discussion was interesting, hardest thing about the essay was how short it was - hard to cover everything in such a small space. might take another anthro course - i got into it.
must keep up - weekly timed quizzes - the discussion was interesting, made me actually think about how I look at people and what I notice about them - the essay is really short, took no time to write - like that I can read and study anywhere, anytime
The final was impossible. Specific questions about websites (not even from textbook) that students looked at at the beginning of term. Hard grader and gives little feedback as to why she marked so harshly. This class made me never want to take another Anthropology course again. A normally A student here shocked with a C+.
Essay she will mark hard. Final was really hard, had questions related to the textbook and notes which confused the ____ out of you.
Wow - not sure wher the last two ratings came from. She gives you the grading scheme so you know exactly what to write for the essay. Quizzes timed and pretty specific so don't start them until you're really ready. The race discussion was more interesting then I thought it would be. The final was tough and covered notes and the textbook.
Very good professor and extremely easy class (it IS an arts course after all!). I took this class last year and it was very interesting. I studied for this particular course about 2 or 3 hours per week and ended up with an A+. Definitely take this course if you need an easy class to boost your GPA or ease your course load.
Tookk this over the summer and it was great. Lots of reading but on your own time and she tells you exactly what you need to right for the essay. Timed quizzes are annoying but not hard. The final was pretty detailed but their was lots of time to right it.
Took the online version, did ok. She replies right way to emails, gives the rubric for essays up front so you know exactly what to right. Final was hard, but all multiple choice. Pay attention to the web activities she posts - their on the exam.
She will spend as much time with you to make sure you get it as you need. Never had a teacher that said I was smart before and explained things in a way that made sense to me when I asked her. I'll look for her classes again next term and take whatever she's teaching.
Boring material made interesting by her take on things. Available all the time thru email, gave tons of feedback on essays.
Dont skip the quizzes or you can't see them to study for the final. Late penatly is brutal - get stuff in on time.
The readings seem out of date but she makes them more interesting in the discussions. She has some cool stories about her work, and she encourages people to ask questions all the time. We got to talk about all kinds of things that weren't in the readings.
All I can say is do NOT take this class online if you can avoid it, absurd amount of very specific dates, etc. to remember + you are responsible for textbook, online notes and random websites that you're supposed to be memorizing from those notes. Considering its a first year class, this feels like a bit much (and I'm in my 4th year)
Lots of reading, lots of things to remember. It's a survey class, so taht makes sense. Took this in person last winter, failed. Took it online over summer and got a B. Different topics, way better online.
I took this class last winter and it was great. She broke down the requirements so we knew exactly what we needed to do, and gave tons of feedback on our first essay I knew how to improve for the second one. Don't know how she'd be in person, but replies fast to emails and questions left in the online forum.
Lots of reading lots to remember but she's great about answering questions and helping you narrow down how to study. Amazing stories about her work if you ask her. Helped me figure out how to sort out some admin stuff that no one else was willing to do and gave me lots to think about how I plan my degree and after I graduate. Talk to her!
Do not take this course. Way two much material to memorize from the entire textbook, class notes, and online material. Questions are way too specific and the her notes and textbook have conflicting dates to make a hellish experience trying to figure out which dates are correct. I am in my fourth year, and this is the worst course I have taken.
There is a ton to read, but it's not much different then other intro classes i've taken here. People have been moaning all term on the forum about the workload and I don't get it. The quizzes are short but timed, the discussion forum was actually interesting and the essay was easy to write. I am taking 5 classes and can keep up without a problem.
Great GPA booster. Lots of reading, but not hard. Race discussion was interesting. She's really clear about what she wants you to do for assignments. Exam coming up but I'm sitting at A right now.
Wrote the final today, expecting an A overall. Lots of material, tests from the notes and the textbook so you need to pay attention to both and the videos that are linked to the notes to. She's really good when you ask questions and tells amazing stories about field work to illustrate her point. Lets you know exactly what to expect.
Keep up with the weekly quizzes, real ALL her instructions and suggestions for the essay, do the discussion and your fine in this class. Lots to read, quizzes can be picky (and are timed) but its not hard. Exam was tougher than I expected but still think I'm coming out of the class with at least a B+.
Barbara Hewitt is one of the worst professors I have ever had. unrealistic amount of material to know spanning across (400 + pages of textbook, 12 sets of unit notes, and about 10 hours of Youtube Videos to watch) all considered testable for the final. be prepared to read and cry. aside from difficulty, man is this course also painfully boring.
People were freaking out in the forums about how much reading there was - it's a self-directed distance class so yes, there's more reading than normal. No lectures means more to read. Duh. Just do it, make notes, follow her instructions for the discussion and the essay and I don't know how you get less than a B in this class.
Almost done this term, will prob get A in this class. She is very good to talk to, explains concepts so their easy to understand, and give lots of feeback on the first assignemnt so you get a good grade on the second one. Wish I'd found her earlier, since I graduate at the end of this year.
This term has been nuts & she's been amazing. The course is ok lots of reading but she is clear about what she wants and gives really good feedback. With Covid19 messing everything up she made sure we're all informed and set up practice exams to make sure the new tech we are using works so we aren't stressed about the final. I'll take her 2nd year!
If youre planning on taking this course as a GPA boooster... DONT!! The course itself is not that difficult, but keeping up with other courses along with the massive amount of reading that is required becomes a challenge. Also: you have to start your exam review and start compiling notes VERY early on. There is a website for the textbook! Use it!
This term was nuts and she was great about getting us info and help. I liked having the exam online because I could see my grade right away.
Lots to read but not hard if you just do it
Dr. Hewitt does not give clear or concise feedback on essay assignments given. Information regarding the final exam, including a study guide, or what kind of question students should be expecting, was also non-existent.
Dont know what the last person is on about. She gave us a link to the textbook practice quizzes and told everybody strait up that it would be just multiple choice for the exam. When the exma went online because of the lockdown she was great at making sure we knew what was happening with changes to the exam. Lots of reading though. LOTS.
Only two essays to write in this class and the final exam. None were hard. Some of the reading is pretty old but interesting.
Spent about 3 hours a week on readings, sometimes less. It was a suggested elective for my major and I expected it to be boring but it wasnt. Got into a couple of email talks with her and shes good about explaining concepts if you dont get it.
Going into the final with A. Course was pretty easy, and she told us exactly what she wanted for the essay. The online discussion on race was good - and timing was prefect with the BLM movement. I am going to take another anth course because I actually liked this.
Had several discussions with her/other students and it was interesting. I'm pre med and it gave me a different perspective than any of my other classes so far. If you are going into medicine, you need to take this class.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She was one of the worst profs I've had. It was online due to COVID-19 and honestly regret taking this course with her. She was very absent, did not respond to emails promptly, unclear grading, gave an attitude when responding to eager students questions, and unclear expectations on both assignments and exams. I would avoid it.
This was a distance ed class, so its pretty self directed. If you can just make yourself do the readings and write two papers you'll be fine. I could have used more time on the final exam but I did finish all the questions. Came out with a GPA boosting A, so that tells you how hard it really was. :)
She provided the grading rubrics for the essays in advance so you knew exactly what she was looking for. Good discussions in the forums, quick response with lots of extra info if you emailed her. I've looked to see if shes teaching anything else online this term but only found the intro course.
I don't really understand all of the great reviews. No lectures just a ton of reading. The entire grade was made up of 2 papers and a final. The papers I found the instructions really unclear and got kind of a condescending answer when I asked for clarification. Final was so stressful b/c she used a webcam and it made me so anxious I couldnt focus.
I would never take this course again. The prof was extremely unhelpful, I emailed her throughout the course several times with questions which she either didnt answer or gave short and vague answers to. Unwilling to help her students, and a very hard marker. As a first year course this was the worst- Im in my third year.
There's lots of reading and tests include the book and online notes. The final was video monitored which always makes me nervous but all my classes did it this term. Do the readings, keep up with the weekly quizzes and you shouldn't have a problem.
Took this as an elective at the same time as her intro class - liked this one better. More real world app (I'm pre-med). Only two essays and a final, but she gave me some good tips and suggestions for writing and researching topics for the essays. Hated video in the exam but I heard there was lots of cheating last term so they had to do something.
Going into the exam I'm at a solid A. Lots to read but the essay was easy (ask her questions ahead of time, look at the rubric), the discussion was actually interesting but the quizzes were a pain. Weekly timed and questions were pretty specific, so you had too keep up with the readings.
LOADS of reading, weekly quizzes discussion posts and an essay. Keep up with everything and you should be fine. Email her with questions and she answeres fast, will look at your essay before its due if you ask her to. She's teaching a second year anthro course this summer and I'm signed up for that one now too.
You read the entire textbook (0ver 500 pages) plus her notes with no area of concentration and then combine them. This is difficult because time periods were often different between the textbook and her notes. Hard marker, many people in this class were disappointed with their essay grades as well as their final grade. Hardest course Ive done.
tons of material to read and you have to keep up or your screwed. rubrics for the assignments are posted so you know how she will grade you, which is great.
There is one term-long assignment and you submit it in three sections, but you can fix the first and second ones each time you send it in for a better grade each time, which is good. You can do a few extra posts for a small extra credit, but only if you do the required ones first. Interesting info, and really pertinent to what's going on now.
Weekly quizzes (but only the top ten marks count), group discussion and assignment about it, and a really short essay that's done in two parts. There is always something going on so don't expect to just read stuff and write a mid-term and final. None of it is hard, just lots to remember. Optional Zoom meetings if you need help.
there is a assignment that runs all term and you keep building it up which actually works. it is a lot of reading but it comes together in the end. she was pretty generous with grades at the end and lots of us got better marks then we expected. easy to ask her questions and she responds fast. zoom meetings through the term for office hours.
Super self directed class but once I figured out how to keep myself on track it was ok. She holds office hours a few times a term by Zoom if you need help but other wise you do this on your own. I liked the discussion some people hated it. I like that she drops the lowest two quiz scores.
Do not take this course as DE. Heard good things about this course (not DE) I totally regret it. You need to read the textbook (which is about 300+ words) and the quizzes were way too specific. Exam is closed book and after having to read that much, there is no way to prepare for this exam. Also too strict on grading. There is no pleasing her.
Lots of reading, weekly quizzes. Ask if you have questions. The chat went crazy with wrong info and people freaking out and getting confused. As soon as I emailed her questions she replies and I know what to do.
This course was super easy and with such an amazing prof! The course consisted of a three part assignment, discussion posts for each module (with chance to get bonus marks), and two tests. She gave super clear information on what she was expecting for the paper, even giving sample paper to look off of! Material was super interesting!
All I can say is that taking the distance education for this course is the biggest regret of my university career. You are literally teaching yourself from the textbook and it is so hard to actually gain an understanding of the material because you have to read so much. There is no way you can do good on the exam unless you memorize the textbook.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course! Medical anthropology is interesting to begin with and Professor Hewitt's organization of the material and delivery made it very easy to learn about. She is wicked fast at getting assignments marked and back to you as well. My one complaint is that the grading seemed pretty arbitrary at times.
Weekly quizzes, online discussion and an essay. Not hard if you keep on top of it. She is fast to respond easy to ask questions and was cool with extension for essay when things got crazy. Others said she was tough but it was like if you emailed her she was good and if you didnt she wasn't cutting people any slack. So talk to her and youre good.
Med anthro was a great class. Interesting material, easy going accessible prof when I had questions, and info made relevant to what is going on in the world now. Love that I could do it on my own time and she mostly left us to our own but answered questions same day and gave good clear explanations so I didn't have to wait long to keep working.
i like that only the top 10 quizzes counted and she gave the rubrics so you new what to write for the paper. the discussion week was different. i liked it some people hated it.
I enjoyed the content but I have a major concern over her use of...pet names, for lack of a better word. I feel like she is rather condescending to the male student.Very disappointed with the way she treats different students,if she hears you are"right wing"she changes attitude rather quickly, I did find that she is knowledgeable in the 2560course.
The course is pretty self-directed but she answers questions fast and gives clear answers. You need to stay current and not get behind because there is lots going on.
Do not take this class for an easy gpa booster if you have more than 3 classes. The content is interesting, however there is A LOT of reading/assignments and it's hard to keep up with. It is very easy to fall behind if you are behind in the slightest. The content or professor is not bad, course is just very time consuming.
A lot of reading is required for this class, and the discussion week is a decent idea however her grading is incredibly inconsistent, she doesn't really make many posts to clarify assignments. This is not the class to take for an easy GPA boost.
It's med anthro, and was a really good class if you are in any of the medical streams. I got a very different perspective on treatments and non-compliance in this class that I think will serve me well as I move into Medicine.
I loved Prof Hewitt so much. She was such a cool professor and always replied to emails in a timely manner. She would let us know when she was away for work and gave us a glimpse into her world. It was so awesome having her. 10/10 would recommend.
Lots of reading. Hewitt is quick to respond to emails. She cares a lot about proper citations! Even in the online discussion that I thought was less formal. But what she wanted was clear in the rubric. Easy GPA booster and very interesting topic!
Loved this class but a ton of reading. No extra credit work so you have to keep up but thats probably better becasue if you get behind there would be lots of catching up to do. Registered for her second year class this term and I hope she is as good in that one. Super easy to deal with by email.
I had a serious family thing going on this term so missed so much deadlines. Talked to her and she worked out a way for me to finish what I missed do I didnt have to drop the class. I didn't expect much when I asked to talk to her so was really surprised when she suggested the solution. Never had a prof make the extra effort like she just did.
Class is interesting for sure, but the unit quizzes have very memorization-based questions. The amount of reading seems like a total waste of time because the questions on the tests do not in any way help you apply newfound knowledge... If you cannot memorize complete chapters (+ dates & sites) in a short amount of time do not take this course.
The weekly quizzes mean you have to keep up which helped me in online bc I procrastinate. Lots of reading and the last chapters were LONG. Wrote the exam yesterday and wasnt as bad as we expected I think. She is super easy to talk to. She holds online office hours and responds to email right away.
