Professor exaggerates and falsifies some information, and is not clear or what content exams will cover

professor joyce is hard to deal with. she will give you personal time to discuss your problems with her course and how to make your work better but in the end she will still mark you off for the changes you made at her suggestion.

She's really funny and cool, but it's really hard to study for her tests because she doesn't do reviews. She gets of track easily.
average teacher
class was interesting most of the time. shes very ADD but funny. she has pretty interesting points. i liked here class for the most part.

don't know what her grading style is like...but i will find out soon!!
I really enjoyed taking her class...i would recommend this teacher to others

I found her classes to be more than such a class. For both of my classes, I always felt empowered from each class session. It was because of her (SOC 100) that I decided to minored in sociology. I think she made me more aware of the inequalities that exist between people and how society continues to perpetuate the cycle. I dunno.... but I liked her class...even though for one of her classes I earned a B...

I dont know what the rest of you have to complain about. The class was easy and enjoyable, the material easy and enjoyable, and the exams easy and enjoyble. Those complaining probably didnt go to class, didn't read the book, and went into the exam unprepared. Her material covered issues that affect our nation today and it's disappointing to hear that college students seem to not care about them. If you wanted a class that would have given you an easy A, this class was it. Too bad you're dumbasses!
Great Techer, fun class. She's real nice. Gotta read or you will not know what's going on though.
Joyce is always smiling. She knows her material, how it applies to society now, and can give examples. She professes to "blond moments" where she loses her place. Lecture topics & readings don't always coincide but tests are straightforward. She motivates students to see the world from a sociological viewpoint.
Lectures don't even go along with the book and she goes off on random topics. Not what i thought the class was going to be like...
I had a early class with her and if you cannot stand peppy people, she is not the one to have. She is always cheerful and lectures are pretty interesting. The only thing I truly did not like is that she did outline some of the topics that she will cover at the beginning of each class.
She likes going off on tangents, and doesn't lecture by the reading material, but otherwise a really nice lady.
She is a very nice lady. She is always cheerful. The only thing is that she does not follow the book in lectures, so you have to read. Its not that hard.

She's so annoying. Sadly, I don't think she can help it. Barbara is just a "sunny" person. She CAN, however, be more helpful. After trying to ask her for personal help several times, I just gave up. She's impossible to deal with. Like a patronizing mom that's stuck as a teen. She belittles students. Doesn't respond well to criticsm or questioning.
This professor is one of those far-end extremists who is very opinionated and has a hard time empathizing with other people's views. She doesn't ever present alternative views AND she's very tangential, which makes her lectures extremely hard follow. On top of that, she could use a good dose of riddlin, she's like an extremely jittery squirrel.
Very unhelpful, unclear teacher who goes off on long and irrelevent tangents. Her lectures are a giant waste of time, and she spends literally weeks going over a minute amount of information...then her exams come and you have never seen the info before in class. You basically have to read/ learn on your own with this class. NOT RECOMMENDED
Very very bad...ruins what could be an interesting class with unentertaining and unrelated lectures. Stay far away from joyce.
I liked her class. All you have to do is take notes and read the book. Her tests are pretty straight foward, but you do have to study. She is a good teacher with interesting lectures.
When lecturing she is energized, however the biggest flaw this teacher posses is her disorganization. Lectures does not follow any order and there is no connection to the books she assigned. Very one sided and likes to belittle you if you don't agree with her views. She is dismissing and plagarizes some lectures from a book we don't have access to.
she's so frantic and all over the place. excellent spunk and enthusiasm. you can't help but try and get as into it as she is. she's from minnesota and also being from there her innocent & clueless moments are just priceless. she does know her stuff though. made me very interested in sociology. relates current issues to material
A lot better than people give her credit for. In 300 level classes, I found her to be much more organized. She doesn't follow the book, but her lectures tie into the material. Her lectures are really interesting and her stories do relate the the subject matter. Her tests are easy if you study and she has a really good grading scale. Sit up front.
The fact that she takes attendance automatically makes this class a waste of time. This is college, not high school, attendance should be optional. It doesnt even matter as her lectures are a waste of time, just a chance for her to appear smarter than she is and belittle students that may disagree
She is an awesome teacher, she catches your attention all the time. she's different but in a positive way because she's so energetic and happy. tests are easy, only multiple choice. theres no REAL final exam its just three "exams" all semester. the class is awesome
the only thing i dont like about this course was that there was WAY TOO MUCH material. she told us to count her lectures as a third book. yes, a third book, and the first one already has 40 pages per chapter..um hello? her tests arent cumilative, but still, there is way too much information you have to memorize. she isnt that boring, its just a lot
This is the second class I've taken from Dr. Joyce. Her teaching style is very energized/enthusiastic/up-beat/happy. Not a hard class if you read the book and attend the lectures. Highly recommended.
Her thinking is way strange. She is annoying to listen to becuase she is way to hyper. Anyone who disagrees with her is WRONG. Sitting in the lectures drove me crazy.
Always comes to class in a good mood. Tests come from textbook and lecture notes but lectures are pretty disorganized and have nothing to do with the text. boring class, tests were easy if you studied...read both textbooks.
Hardly ever went to class and got a B. Never read the book either, not even for the exams.
She was a very good teacher. Write down the notes she jots on the board and do all the readings. You should be fine come midterm and exam time. Also offers extra credit. She also shows lots of videos as well.
Never before have I had a professor as off in her own world as Barbara Joyce. She's a kind woman, but her lectures are pointless, as she is constantly off-topic. The tests are multiple choice, but difficult and based solely on the reading (which are assigned daily). If you have the option of another professor, go with them.
teaches very well, very understandable but tests can be difficult if materials is not understood or read.
Dr. Joyce is very interesting. Her stories are amusing and applies them to important terms and concepts. Take notes and read the books. The exams aren't difficult so long as you're always reviewing and keeping up to date with reading. Extra credit opportunities are available.
She doesn't really make attendance daily mandatory, but once a random class day a week, she'll do attendance. One time she gave us extra credit for just attending class. So attend class! You can easily tell she is enthusiastic of what she is teaching, which is motivating. The class is based on a introductory lecture hall sized class.
pretty much a useless class. her lectures go off topic and it has nothing to do with the things covered in the book. she takes random attendance, that is why i go to class. i recommend taking another professor.
Really nice lady. Boring lectures. If you read the book you will do really well.
Barbara is a very good professor. She's probably one of the best in the SOC department. She's very enthusiastic and nice. She takes attendance, and all of the exams are multiple choice. We had two exams and a paper to write. I would recommend taking a course with her.
Creepy and weird.....class was pointless to go to....but she does surprise attendance. And ALL the exams are based on the readings and there is soooooooooo much expected to be read. Her lectures have nothing to do with the exams as well so don't count on the idea that she's gonna go over the material....she won't.
Meh. I didn't care for her, she seems a little out there hahah. You don't really need to go to the lectures, buuuut she does give points when she takes random attendance. The exams are based on the loads&loads&loads of reading she assigns you daily. unless you love sociology or love reading, I don't recommend her.
very boring in class. she never goes over anything for the homework reading. but her tests are solely based on the readings. lots of readingggg. nice, but pointless.
Not very interested in SOC but she did a good job of relating the subject to current events and keeping the Tempo up so it was easy to pay attention. Uses lots of text books on exam.
Takes attendance randomly for points. Very optimistic. Kind of spacey. 3 books required, all of which are on the test, plus lecture material. Lecture is separate and not found in the books. Tests are very easy.
she is really energetic, but it gets annoying. in general WAY too hard. she doesn't go over the book in class but the entire test in on the book. not a good teacher to take unless you HAVE to. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Prof Joyce is a wonderful lady, but her teaching needs some help. The class used three textbooks which we read cover to cover and also a lecture. Students memorize informstion from 4 different sources. Class is difficult and very very dull
Really energetic teacher, but she seems too scatter-brained. I totally wish she had a study guide or something to follow with her lectures. I guess you'll do fine if you do the readings & listen to her lectures. Bottom line: I'd recommend another teacher.
This class is pointless. She does not believe in study guides so you will have no idea what she is going to put on the test. She is a little crazy, and she lets her T.A. do all the grading so she really has no idea what grade to give you at the end. She is a harsh grader. Does not like athletes. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Nice and cheery teacher. Yes, I do wish she provided a study guide for the exams -- especially since her lectures really had nothing to do with our readings and she jumped on other stuff... But for the most part, I found 2 of the 3 books to be pretty easy to read and follow along. Overall I think she's an okay teacher and class was okay, too.
Don't expect to get an A unless you really want to invest hours into it every week.
Would not recommend her class. Does not even address the textbook for her lectures, but 95% of the exams are from the text and about 5% from lectures. Said the text was too complicated to discuss in class.
she's definitely excited about her subject... but can't seem to pass on the excitement to the rest of the class. the class isn't too hard if you keep up with the readings though... i wouldn't really recommend the class....
She is very excited about sociology that her lectures don't put me to sleep. She doesn't lecture from the book but it is important to go because some of what she says will be on exams. She has random days where she takes attendance so it is important that you go to every class so you can get points to up your grade. Also keep up with the reading
let me put it this way, students leave her lecture because its boring and she doesn't teach us anything at all...and then she gets mad at students. this class is a waste of time and a waste of credits
This class is not worth taking. The professor is horrible. She doesn't explain the text at all which is dumb because the tests are only on the text. NOT what she says in class. This class is definitely not worth the money or time. She should retire.
She is super energetic about sociology... But seems creepy at times! Haha. Her tests are okay... just sometimes tricky and lots of terms to know. Based on too much reading!!! I hated that... I don't like to read 3 books for one class! and she doesn't give easy extra credit... I wish I could've skipped... but can't with surprise quizzes and videos
She expects everyone to do good.. yet at the same time everyone is failing because to be able to understand and comprehend three different books at one time is absolutely ridiculous. especially for one lecture class..
I really love the way she teaches! She is always really into what she is talking about and gets excited about sociology which keeps you interested. Taking this class by her influenced me to minor in SOC! The only hard part is keeping up on the readings and remembering everything from the 3 books for the test.
Easiest class of your LIFE. Take it, its fun, interesting and an easy A. Just study for tests and do all the extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you like to read alot. She goes off subject all the time. Her lectures are never on the test. She doesn't give you a set study guide nor a study guide. STRICTLY JUST READING. She talks bubbles. She wonders why majority of her class is failing... its because shes not a good teacher, period.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS. The class is a waste of time, I advise you to refrain from taking this class. I would rather get less credits than take this class as a filler. She is the worst teacher ever!
Boring. When she talks it's kinda creepy sometimes. Too much reading. No curve on tests, even when the class average is an F! I think I wasted my time and money...FML
Dont Take This Class! Horrible professor. Lectures are mindless babbling most of the time and dont teach you anything about sociology. There is 2-3 books of reading before every class. You basically have to teach yourself. Waste of money, basically paying for a room to chill in for an hour.
She's an okay teacher. Tried to be funny but I don't think she is, just annoying. Should go to class to learn the material.
This class requires A LOT of reading. 3 textbooks, so plan on reading at least one chapter after each class. 80% of the exams comes from the readings. She lectures about a lot of random, useless things. Also, there are random pop quizzes and attendance days. Overall the class wasn't too hard.
Very fun and interesting teacher. The videos she shows aren't boring and it's better if u have a friend in the class so u can take turns skipping. The stuff she talks about in lectures are usually in 5-10 questions out of 50 on her tests. She takes attendance once in a while and maybe gives a pop quiz if attendance seems lacking. Read the books because that's where most of the exam questions come from. Some are from the videos but again the videos were fun to watch. Good class for Gen Ed.
She's very enthusiastic about sociology but overall, the class is boring. There are a few videos she plays in class. But what it all comes down to is the exams that are heavily based on the three textbooks she requires. You need to keep up with the readings and really understand what's going on to do good on the exams.
She is a very intelligent lady, always enthusiastic about whatever she is talking about. however her class is really difficult. she uses her lecture notes in her exams as well as the books she requires you to read. if you do not read the books you will fail the exams. no joke. she does not give study guides or extra credit
You must do all the assignments and do the online study guide for the Newman text. Also, attend class. There are a few questions from lectures and videos on the exams. They aren't hard if you've read all the material and studied well. Easy A.
She is on the best professors around!
Hated this class. 3 non cumulative exams are nice. Exams are 50 MC, with 45 questions from the 3 textbooks. 5 questions from lecture. Boring lectures and she's not interesting. The only reason I went to class was for random attendance. Bring a laptop to save you from boredom. I aced the exams because I read the textbooks. Read or fail
SUPER BORING! The only reason why people even attend her class is for random attendance point which she usually does on Fridays (with the occasional Weds). She lectures on random stuff instead of the textbooks when 95% of the questions on the exams are from the textbooks. Don't take her class.
I say the class was easy but that's because I know sociology. I got a good grade in the class bc i worked for it not bc of her. She's a HORRIBLE teacher who is flat out boring your either going to sleep through her lectures, sit on your laptop, or not attend. A complete waste of time and her lectures have nothing to do with what your learning
Professor gives random attendance points once a week mostly on fridays. lectures have little to do with what is on the exams. if you read and understand what you read, you will ace the class. three books are used and yes, all are read completely by the end of the semester. if you dont like to read, dont take the class. very nice and approachable
Boring lectures. The exams are based on the three books that you MUST read. Mostly Newman and BMG. You'll get a good grade only if you thoroughly read the chapters. I swear I was gonna fail but doing that one extra credit opportunity SAVED me. I highly recommend... any other teacher.
She's overly excited about her job, tries to make lectures interesting but provides A LOT of reading from the books. Tests aren't easy but The extra credit project helps your grade a lot.
The tests had about 2 or 3 questions relating to what she went over in lecture but you are required to go to lectures. Why?! idk. There are 3 text books but she didnt go over them at all or tell you what to focus on. you just have to teach yourself. Also, She doesnt grade on a curve. Avoid at all cost!
I had low expectations when entering the class from these reviews, but she is actually very nice and INTERESTED in what she is teaching which helps. Yes class can be boring at times, but a teacher with enthusiasm can go a long way. You do need to read 3 textbooks for class to do well on the test (80% from books), but it's not that hard.
She is quite a day dreamer and sometimes you can find her smiling at herself or talking to her self.
Dr. Joyce is the nicest person. shes always happy and smiles all the time. she occasionaly pauses during lecture, stares and smiles and random students. other than that, she gets her test questions straight out of the book so I never took notes. overall i was satisfied with the class.
Three midterms cumulative to its respective readings on the syllabus. Attendance is taking randomly. This lady is odd and peculiar. I have never taken notes and aced the class. However, she rambles on about so much irrelevant things that I started to second guess whether I should be taking notes. But, nope! Does not pertain. Read the textbooks.
You're expected to read 5-6 chapters out of the textbook then take exams on them, with no guideline as to what is supposed to be remembered from the text, which makes it near impossible to do well on the test unless your capable of memorizing 5-6 chapters worth of material at a time. I wouldn't recommend her class unless you're good at memorizing.
Joyce is very indecisive of what she wants out of the class. Her TA had to do most of the work and gave us heads up on changes in a big assignment as Joyce wouldn't tell us herself. Def should be higher than a 100 class with the level of reading 3-4 books and so much papers to write. Even the TA agrees. She argues all the time with the students.
Lots of reading. In class its mostly lecture. Exams are HARD. She's nice, but her class is definitely difficult.
Not a good class at all. Some people complain about reading, but a few books are not the issue. It's the "lecture" Joyce has. She just rambles on and on, with only minimum use of the whiteboard. No powerpoint or real notes, she just RAMBLES! Half of it doesn't even line up with our reading or quizes. Never taking her insane/senile classes again.
Barbra Joyce is a really nice person, as a teacher not so much. She rambles about her kids and barley talks about the context of the class and when she does, there is no power point to follow up on, therefore it is really hard to follow where she is going with her class. She also never cancels class, even if she just rambles about her life.
Barbara is an overall good professor but she left midway through my semester with her with no explanation and no coverage. We showed up to class for two weeks with no instructor or emails until the University appointed a T.A to teach class for the remainder of the semester. She's really clear and doesn't have unreasonable expectations.
Professor Joyce knows what she is talking about in her SOC341 class. A lot of people who don't read and expect to get an easy A in every class will complain about her. The class was NOT difficult. Just show up, take notes, read the chapters, and take the tests. If you read you will be fine. She's a great human being and her class was interesting!
She is a horrible lecturer. Doesn't have power points or any time of lecture style, she just rambles on all class. Super boring class and lectures are pointless anyways. Exams are mainly from book only like 5 questions from lectures and she doesn't even talk about the information from the books so it's pretty much a teach yourself class.
Doesn't know how to lecture. For every exam you need to read like 5-7 chapters per book in which we have 3 books for this class. Her lectures are pointless but you do have to attend class cuz it's part of grade
Terrible lecturer. No PowerPoint, never seems prepared, always referring back to her notes. Her class is pointless and more than 80% of questions in exams are from textbooks. I highly recommend not to take her class.
All she does is assign weekly essays which is written about from a really long reading we have to do as homework. Most of the questions on the tests are from her books and maybe like 5/50 questions are from what she writes on the board.
Dr Joyce loves sociology so much to the point where she seems straight up crazy. Be sure to read or at least look at whatever section of the textbook is assigned for the week and it might be a little easier to organize your notes and see where she's coming from in her lectures.
Passionate about the subject. Funny and warm personality. However, goes off on tangents, a LOT. Never sure what is going to be on tests; take notes in class because lecture material will never match the book and it will be on the test. Curves grades for a reason. Participate in class. Don't expect clear answers to questions.
She was overall a nice person, but not so much as a professor. Don't expect a clear answer to a question, always goes off topic. For the textbook, as long as you remember the definitions from NEWTON and kind of read the summary of the other books you will do fine.
Doesnt teach you anything from the textbook, just talks about the topic in a supplementary way. Requires 3 books (textbook, college survival book, excerpts from soc writings). Every chapter is assigned since tests Qs are from all books. Every week you need to read an excerpt and write 1-2 pages on it (15 excerpts total). Just take another professor
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! she randomly takes attendance, requires three textbooks that she tests out of, never gives a clear answer to a question, goes off topic, and is rude. the only thing i learned from this class is how much a butter dish has impacted this womans life. take another professor that will make class more enjoyable to attend
The worst teacher I've ever had in my whole education experience. DO NOT take her she just talks about her own life and makes very difficult and confusing quizzes!
She has extremely vague lectures that dont give useful information, and she also uses no powerpoints or slides which makes it difficult to take notes. She goes on different tangents that are unrelated to the subject. She gives extremely difficult tests with no study guide. She was incredibly rude and unprofessional to me when I asked her for help.
There were three required textbooks for this class, none of which was even discussed during her lectures. She assigned readings every day and there was a paper due each week (only based on one textbook). She provides no study guides and no tips on what to study. "As long as you read everything and pay attention to lectures, you will understand."
She was nice, understanding, and pretty lenient but not the best professor to learn a new topic from. Always went off on a tangent, kind of difficult to focus because you never knew what the lesson was about, the lectures never related to the readings we were assigned. But as long as you keep up with homework and readings, the exams are doable.
