dry and boriiiing...the tests are all multiple choice, but the questions get pretty nit-picky
Dr. Kuemerle (or as I call her, Babs) is awesome!! She loves the material, and it shows. Just study the lecture notes; don't bother with the book. She loves teaching, she loves getting to meet you, and she loves conversing. Simply the best!
Incredibly difficult to stand. My grade was poor, I'm willing to admit that. However, that doesn't excuse the fact that her lectures were very similar to the drone of a jet engine--monotonous, draining. She was quite nit-picky. She can make an hour seem like an eternity--in a bad way.
Stay away from this class
Stay away from this course. Study all you want (for days even), it won't guarantee anything on the exam.
Dr. Kuemerle's lectures aren't the MOST engaging I've ever had, but I felt what you needed to know was pretty clear. She goes off her powerpoints a lot, with a bit of supplemental information, but she doesn't usually test on it. You can do well in the course if you just study off the powerpoints and old tests she puts on Blackboard.
800 slides to study from for an exam. That's ridiculous. She is nice though.
Good professor. Her summer 216 lab is extremely easy and fun.
Filled in to teach Anatomy I for the semester. Runs through powerpoints without taking a breath, so I stopped taking notes. Very nice and will answer questions, but you have to keep up!
It's going to take some work to keep up with all the material, but she does a very good job of making it engaging and interesting. It's really not as hard as some students make it seem. Very approachable and expectations are clear. One of the best professors in the department.
Memorize the slides and you're guaranteed an A on the test. SERIOUSLY. DO NOT STUDY THE BOOK. I took the class during the May term and it was SO MUCH INFO IN 3 WEEKS!!! But I totally had the slides down, so I did really well.
Does not use the book. She is definitely nice person, but as a professor, she reads the slides and at the end of the week, there are 500 slides to go through. Exams were hard. Study, and youll get a B.
Good teacher, genuinely cared and helped us learn. Don't use the book, study the lecture slides very well and you can get an A. Her test questions are not very difficult and she purposefully tries to not make them tricky
Hard tests, exactly not what I expected.
Kuemerle is a great professor in lecture. She is very enthusiastic and explains things really well. MEMORIZE her power points to the last picture and go to SI sessions. Her tests are difficult despite what people say but literally she gives you all the information you need on the power points. This class was enjoyable because of her lectures.
Dr. Kuemerle is the best for BIOL 216L in the summer! I literally have a 100% in the course. She's extremely helpful and gives useful inputs on how to design good posters and write excellent papers. She's also fun to chat with in a small class and is a really cool professor. Highly recommend taking this for a good lab experience.
She is super approachable and nice in e-mails -- it's really easy to ask for help if you need it or if you don't understand something. In lectures, she will talk about what's always on the NEXT slide instead of the slide she's currently presenting which is frustrating... but all test material comes from her PowerPoints. Memorize them well ;)
The worst class I have taken while at Case Western. The professor reads directly off the slides and her lectures drag on, halfway through the semester less than 10% of the class was paying attention. Over 400 slides to MEMORIZE per test. Tests were extremely specific, picking out minor unneeded details as test questions. Not worth your time.
Memorize her powerpoints--there's like 300+ slides to memorize per exam and it's awful awful awful watching the lectures because she just drones on for over an hour. Everything she says comes verbatim off the powerpoints--and funny thing about her powerpoints, a lot of it is verbatim off of Wikipedia.
I took 216, and 216L during May Term, both with Dr. Kuemerle. The tests were hard, and it sometimes seemed like questions asked about really specific details. However, she always makes herself available to answer questions or provide help to students. Additionally, she was super receptive to questions about grading, and has given me points back.
tests are literally impossible, don't take the class unless you have to
This is about Dr. K's SAGES seminar. I can't speak for her lecturing abilities, but she is an EXCELLENT discussion facilitator and gives students the reigns in this class. Lots of opportunities to learn and discuss. Don't take this class unless you want to have your thinking challenged, and TALK, a lot. For papers, effort+good writing -- A. Easy.
A big stickler for attendance, but so brilliant and very engaging. Highly recommend!
Absolute waste of time. Extremely forgetful in posting promised assignments and resources. She lectures for herself and not her students. If you intend on passing, her lectures are absolutely useless and the text will be your only hope. She puts emphasis on application but does not seem to know the basic material herself.
Dr. K's lectures aren't the best, however, as a person is very friendly. To do well on the exams you basically need to have everything on the slides memorized and understand the connections. Its doable but very tedious.
Had Dr. Kuemerle for Bio 216, very smart professor but teaches way too fast. Honestly will learn more by copying lecture slides. Come to class for pop worksheets
Don't fall for her "nice" appearance. She's a snake. Doesn't care about the class or the students. She's totally fine with giving everyone Cs and Ds. Makes everyone by her textbook, which contains no relevant info what so ever. Be prepared to cram for days before the tests. If you don't have to take 216 for your major, avoid this class hurtsGPA
Took this class during May Term and basically everyday we learned a week's worth of material every day. The material is not too difficult but it is just a lot in a short amount of time. Kuemerle is a nice lecturer and is very kind. She is very receptive to answering questions both inside and outside of class.
BIOL 302 is one of the better, if not the best SAGES Ive taken at Case. Great discussions, and honestly interesting topics. Dr. Kuemerle makes a real effort to keep the class fun. Take this class if you have the chance.
Kuemerle is a great person and a very knowledgable professor. She teaches a class that has a ton of material and she expects you to know it inside and out (use the lecture slides). If you put the time and effort in it's super rewarding. The lab goes well with the course, so take them at the same time.
Dr. K is a solid professor. She covers a TON of content in class, so its difficult to keep up. The exams are all multiple choice, but each exam could cover 300 slides and requires you to remeber really specific pieces of information. Should definitely study in advanced. She does offer HW points and pop in-class assigments.
The class has tons of info so kind of hard to learn during class because she goes so fast. However, exams are doable and can easily be crammed for if you have to in a few days. Come to class for extra credit / in class assignments even if your just doing notes on your own. Watch the recorded lectures and you'll be fine for the exam. Final was fine.
I took this class online and I have to say it was a the worst experience I've had with a professor at CWRU. Dr. Kuemerle's expectations were very unclear. She told us that since there was so much information and so little time her tests would be big picture, yet almost of her questions included minute details or semantic trickery. STAY AWAY
Dr. Kuemerle is very responsive to questions and is always willing to help students. There is a ton of content covered in the course and her exams are application-based, detailed, and hard, so it's challenging but very interesting content. It's definitely rewarding if you put in the effort to learn! I'd definitely recommend Kuemerle for 216!
Synchronous lecture is a waste of time. She doesn't go over presentations, she simply answers questions. She expects you to know everything from the thousands of slides. Exams require LOTS of studying. Interesting content but too much information.
There is a lot of content, but thats physiology in general. Shes very knowledgeable and she does the best she can for a large lecture. I took physiology in high school and HATED it, but she makes it much more interesting, especially with her case studies. You get out of it what you put into it, and she gives you the basics to succeed
listen kiddos. just memorize her textbook :') and you'll be good.
Go to class, even though it may seem useless. The case study help to make everything come full circle and there is an opportunity to get EC in class. She does a flipped teaching style so you watch the lectures beforehand. Lazy but it worked for me! If you want to pass or get an A just focus of memorizing the slides and use the case study to wrap.
Yeah there's a lot of material but what did y'all expect with Bio? If you study the slides/recorded lectures in a way that works for you you'll do fine. I had an A in the class until I fell behind on watching the lectures in the end of the semester and bombed the final. So don't do that
LOTS of materials to remember, but that's physiology. Her slides are nice, having everything she expects you to remember. tests are straightforward, you just need to spend time trying to cram everything into your brain. So I would say preparing for her exam is not difficult but just time-consuming.
89% of the course grade comes from 4 multiple choice exams, which she expects you to know every detail of every slide. The online lectures are useless and so are the in-person classes. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO- RUN. And if you have to take her, well good luck. I would have taken the course over the summer if I had to do it all again.
Honestly, there was so much to learn from this course. Be ready to memorize hundreds of slides for the exams, but they were rather crammable within maybe 3 days before exams. Also, she does give a few extra points, some of them require you to attend lectures.
I say lectures are mandatory. They aren't, but you should be attending for extra credit. Every point matters. Although there are assignments, multiple-choice tests determine almost everything, and they are much harder than you'd expect. Cramming right before exams is doable, but it makes your life easier if you take notes as the course goes on.
216 is a tough class because it is a lot to know but if you truly put time in to study days ahead, you can be fine. Watching lectures is almost pointless bc she just reads off the slides but she is super sweet and truly loves what she does. Every point matters in this class so attend lectures for the chance of extra credit
I had an A all year and then the final, which was unusually difficult, dropped me to a B. Your grade is pretty much decided by 3 tests and a cumulative final. The class moved too fast and there was a ridiculous amount of information you had to memorize for each test. Most people gets Bs or Cs in this class, so be wary of this course.
LOTS of materials to remember - be prepared to study a lot. But her slides are very helpful as they have everything you need to know for exams. Final is cumulative but the content from previous chapters are easy so not need to worry too much - just to read through the slides once and that should be okay.
Dr. Kuemerle is easily the worst professor I've had here. The course has so much material, and the tests are over the slightest details. She had a flipped classroom during COVID and didn't switch back when we returned in person, but her recorded lectures are nothing more than her reading straight off her slides. If you can't memorize easily, drop.
There is no need for reviewing echo360 because ALL the details that will be tested are from separated ppt and videos. The exam is very difficult and has nothing to do with the lecture. It requires extra study. And you only have one set of practice exam questions, there is only a little homework question.
Exams focus on material never covered in class. Classes are essentially useless. Never had a B in any course except this one. She has to give extra points to just have her class reach minimum acceptable grades
Personally not a huge fan of her teaching style (she just flips through 200+ slides and reads off them). Not a hard class if you study well and know the concepts. Exams are quite fair (if you studied there you are all set)
In lectures, she eithe gives a half-baked rundown of the course content or recruits med students to discuss case studies. Everything important is online in videos, where she reads PPT slides choppily without explaining anything, which is the most irritating to me. Memorize them for an A, but self-teaching is needed if you want to understand them.
Her textbook is not as useful as the PowerPoint and lecture videos online. I've never had a flipped class for biology, where you come to class prepared with questions. I think that may work in seminar classes, but to fully understand concepts at a STEM school, I'd like to be taught in a more productive manner.
She is really nice, but her class is awful. Even if you know the material, the tests are impossible; they're multiple choice, but have "A and C" and "all of the above" and "none of the above" answer choices. She has a flipped classroom model, which means she gets to slack off and overwhelm you with content. You need divine intervention for an A.
Memorization heavy class over actual understanding. The only material you need to know for the tests comes from the pre-recorded lectures, any other supplemental material like her $80 textbook (that she wrote) and in person lectures are completely useless and a waste of your time. Not a terribly difficult class if you are good at memorization.
Super smart and really kind, but I am not a fan of the reverse classroom style and the 50Q MC tests. Lectures were pretty much pointless (unless you wanted unicorn extra credit), but it's clear she loves the subject and puts her time into explaining concepts people have trouble with. You absolutely cannot slack off in this class.
Flipped-lecture class with Prof just re-reading off her slides during class or discuss random case studies instead of pointing out important areas to study for exams. The exam questions were misleading and confusing (answers were counted wrong because of one vague term in the question). It was clear she didn't care about this class or the students.
She is honestly amazing. I think everyone who doesn't like the flipped classroom just hasn't learned how to use the lectures to learn. I LOVED the flipped setting because you get all the information you need condensed into tiny lectures that you can rewatch as many times as you want. Literally all the info you will need is in the slides.
Yes, it's all memorization, but what can you expect? It's a physiology class, not a biochem class. If you can memorize things easily, you will be more than fine. I sometimes watched all the lectures a few days before the exam, and then rewatched them to refresh my memory, which helped a ton! Don't be afraid to take this class, it is worth taking!!
Dr. Kuemerle is one of the most best professors I've had at Case. She is incredibly knowledgble about the subject matter and dedicated to teaching. Her flipped classroom approach is amazing with memorization heavy subject like Physiology, where everyone can learn at their own pace. This class will require hard work, but you get out what you put in
Expect lots of self-studying. Her lectures are interesting but teach almost nothing about course content. Her lecture vids are comprehensive, but it's a hassle to watch her struggle and take an hour to explain concepts. This is even worse when each test requires you to know an unfathomable amount of content. I heard she's better in 3-level courses.
Nice and intelligent woman, not a great prof. though. Attending lecture is completely useless besides for extra credit, you must teach yourself/memorize all of the content from the Canvas slides. Doesn't sound bad, but there is an enormous amount of specific content to know for each exam, and it gets tricky timewise w/ other classes such as orgo.
Dr. K is incredible! I had her for the May term. The class was incredibly hard (felt like a 20 credit load) but worth it. She is always willing to meet with you outside of class and is incredibly encouraging (I got a 72 on one of my exams and she inspired me to keep working, just barely getting the A). Make sure to do all the extra credit!
While I actually enjoyed the content of the class (aside from the development part), it was a slog to get through. Dr. Kuemerle teaches entirely through pre-recorded lectures which can take up to 3 hours each if you're taking proper notes. Tests aren't that bad, just memorize pretty much everything and you're fine. Class extra cred is nice.
I would prefer to take this class with another professor, but this was a fun class with content I liked. I did not like her teaching method as she made students watch the videos that she recorded for COVID-19 and then just discussed important points, real-life applications, etc which are probably not tested on exams. The exams are really hard.
Very difficult tests and lots of material
Fun class, exams are difficult because of the question structure (READ CAREFULLY, single words in long sentences can make an option incorrect). This class's structure represents what all aspiring future doctors will have to deal with in med school. It's a bit challenging, but it is to be taken in stride.
This class has a ton of anatomy content, which is tough to memorize as to be expected. She uses a flipped classroom, which doesn't really work in classes with 200+ people, so going to class is sorta pointless other than getting possible extra credit. She posts video lectures to watch before class that can take hours to get through.
I didn't love the flipped format and going to lecture sometimes felt useless (it kind of was idk why I still went) but felt like I learned a lot and it was a good foundation for future biology. Overall a mediocre teacher and a lot of content but it did feel rewarding at the end to realize how much I know now about the organ systems.
Literally the worst class i've ever taken at CWRU. Escape while you can
She literally just yaps about random stuff that will never show up on the exams in class. Flipped classroom is actually useless, and half of the time, her videos contradict each other. Also she has some questions that never showed up on the exam. I had to rely on outside knowledge for some of her tests.
Flipped classroom style was awful. Class lectures spent going over material that felt irrelevant most of the time. Exams were super difficult with many trick questions and confusing questions and answer choices. Not impossible to do well, she offers extra credit, sometimes randomly in class. No other option for 216, so good luck.
Not a good lecturer, but a very sweet person. Memorize the slides, and don't underestimate the exams; you need to know the content VERY well. She gave so much extra credit though (DON'T SKIP CLASS), it helped a lot. Overall, a very smart and caring person, but doesn't know how to teach. Helpful and patient during Zoom office hours though.
Class unnecessary to attend. First 2 exams I paid attention and engaged in class and performed significantly worse than the final 2 exams, when I used class to watch the lecture or YT videos. Frequently got off-topic with unnecessary information. EC and memorizing make an A not difficult, but learning the content is very difficult with Kuemerle
I wouldn't suggest wasting time taking notes on her lecture voiceovers. just make flashcards, answer learning objectives at the start of each slidedeck, learn with youtube videos. The only way i could memorize all that info was by using anki.
One of those classes you just have to get through. Some repeat exam questions, but not enough to make a big difference. You just have to figure out how to study and do well as you go even if it is scary and you aren't sure how and you do badly on an exam or two. Don't even think about an A unless you harness most extra credit points.
By far the hardest class I've taken in college, but so much extra credit Tips to succeed: - Go to class, she gives extra credit sometimes. Don't pay attention in class, just go - Watch the lecture videos around when they are due. Make sure that the first time seeing the material isnt 3 days before studying for the exam - Seek out past exams
Kuemerle is just not the best at conveying the knowledge that is required in class. However, all of the information that you need to know is on the slides, you just have to effectively study them. Exams make up 89% of the grade, however, she gave around 6% grade boost in extra credit, so make sure you come to class.
this class is prob 2-3x harder than 214/215 cuz of the amount of content. kuemerle is also rly bad at lecturing so j try to absorb the info on slides on ur own. exams are easy to do okay on, but super hard to do rly well on due to the insane specificity of questions. its not too hard to get A tho cuz she gives hella EC so u j need a 80ish test avg.
I was constantly working easily 20+ hours a week studying for this 3 credit class. First 2 tests were hard but she made the 3rd and 4th easier. Lots of extra credit. Go to class for the extra credit, you don't have to pay attention.
I think the only thing you need to know is that after this class, I went to talk about the content with a doctor I shadowed. I could not pronounce a single anatomical term correctly. That's how little she actually taught, most of this is reviewing 200+ slides on your own a week.
Absolutely loved this class. Dr. Kuemerle genuinely cares and creates a chill, open environment. The content is super interesting, and the activities are fun, not stressful. Group discussions are frequent, and participation is encouraged but not forced. Minimal homework and fair grading. Definitely one of my favorite classes at Case!
MUCH better in 300-level classes compared to 216, where most grading is based on exams. Good upper-level BIOL elective if you like course discussion and neuroscience. All readings/texbooks can be found on internet archive for free. No tests, just two presentations and a few essays.
Kuemerle is very sweet, she's just a researcher who also happens to teach and so she doesn't do the latter very well. Exams are tough, you need to know the content inside and out. Strategies: go to lecture for EC, do other work while you're there. Take notes on online slides WEEKS in advance, create quizlet, test yourself, repeat.
Prof Kuemerle is a wonderful bio prof. Her class was interesting, and she was able to keep students engaged for a 3hr lecture online (which is no easy task). Her rubrics are clear, and her grading is fair. If you can, take this class.
Only slideshows all day everyday. No point in going to class. Tests are completely multiple choice will “none of the above” as a possible answer to everything. Worse class I've taken in my entire existence. DONT TAKE. SWITCH MAJORS. I HAD A 4.0 BEFORE THIS.
barbara really just needs to completely rework this entire course. everyone failed exam 1 and she refused to curve "until the end of the semester if its really necessary". homework is a waste of time just a ton of ted talks that say you are responsible for your own learning so it doesn't seem like her fault when everyone fails. girl can't teach.
Would've rated higher if she didn't put an exam the day after fall break.
$70,000 tuition to TEACH YOURSELF. HOURS outside of class trying to make sense of power points. Tests are super unfair and include many: "which of the following answer choices are false" or "none of the above" which seems more like rage baiting then testing student knowledge. Schedules tests at poor times (holidays or after breaks). Steer clear.
Run. Take it in the spring if you can. There's no point in even going to lectures when you have to teach yourself. Even that is impossible to do since the slides aren't reflective of what type of questions she pulls out for exams. Please save yourself.
This may be one of the worst classes at CWRU. Anatomy is hard, but Kuemerle manages to make this class completely insufferable. Lecture is pointless as she just points at slides and says "yeah you need to know this", and then does case studies that add absolutely nothing to my understanding. Also putting an exam the day after fall break is cooked.
Wants her entire class to fail.
Doesn't care about her students' success at all. The videos are just her reading off the slides.
does not teach at all. her videos are just her reading directly off the slides. The exams are diabolical. acts like she's “challenging” students, but she just doesn't know how to teach. Doesn't respond to questions, doesn't care about students, and offers no support. It's honestly shameful that someone like this is in a teaching position.
She's outwardly sweet but doesn't actually want her students to succeed. Exams are written in such a way that each MCQ is 3 sentences long with hyper specific vocab with one letter off and then a “none of the above” option so that even if you understand the concept, you lose points because the question is DESIGNED to trick you. HW is useless.
Avoid her at ALL COSTS. You could be the best student in the entire world but if something unlucky happens, she's the least understanding professor to exist and will insult you just for asking. You're better off with literally anyone else.
would have given a 0/5 if i could. she has published papers on "metacognition" and how students best learn but she can't teach. she is a researcher who is forced into teaching and it shows.
Dr. Kuemerle is one of the worst professors I have had at CWRU. She is a kind person but her exams are absolutely impossible, formatted with mcqs that are designed to trick you. You can go into the exam being able to explain every pathway but the wording of her questions makes it so difficult to do well. Just take 216 with literally anyone else.
Incredible. Clear lectures were top-tier and highly informative. Would give 10/5 rating if possible. Minor studying is required; you learn rapidly as the course is enthralling for anyone with a remote interest in physiology. Tests after break might induce anger, but stay calm and you will be rewarded.
Barbara lectures well and her videos are extremely efficient; you can typically expect to spend less than an hour per week studying. Likewise, the tests could not be more straightforward as long as you hit this one hour studying quota—which I infer may be tough for the flurry of 1/5 reviewers. Do not miss your chance to take this course.
PLEASE take this class in the spring if you can. The exams make it impossible to do well and she gives homework that doesn't add much value. This class made me re-evaluate my future.
While she teaches a very hard course, Professor Kuemerle genuinely cares about her students and puts in effort to help them succeed. She teaches the material well, but unfortunately physiology is content heavy at any school, and her exams are very fair if you put in the work.
Do not waste your time and effort, take it in the spring semester. Her homeworks do not help you in the course and some of them were huge time wasters. She teaches outside of the scope of the course, and frankly doesn't seem to enjoy teaching this class at all. If she proctors your exam, expect to start 5-8 minutes later then the intended time.
This class is taught entirely flipped, so all of the information is learned on your own. She discusses things that do not matter for tests, and assumes that everyone understands the material from the slideshows. She says things like, "have they taught you this", when I am fairly sure that she is the TEACHER for this course. Would not recommend.
Do not recommend. Her exams are intentionally designed to trick you up, even if you know the content. Her homework is utter garbage and useless. I didn't do well on her first exam, and I thought i can chalk it up to not studying it properly, but the second exam, even after I've study four at least an hour each day for weeks, it barely improve.
Unless you memorize every single detail on every single slide from her online power points, you will not get an A. Questions on the exam are confusing because there are none of the above and all of the above for every single question so you will always second guess yourself. Anki will be your best friend in this class and even then might get a B.
I think she uses all her brain power on schemes to make students miserable rather than using it to find a helpful way to present class information. My family, friends, extended family, neighbors, and coworkers know this woman's name and that goes to show how miserable I am in this course. Send help. Free us.
I have no idea what her intentions are with us. I believe something happened to her mentally because in no way would a “average” human want her students to be this miserable. No need to attend lecture because she gets off topic and you need to memorize literally every letter in her lecture. Also why ask us to do useless homework assignments.
Honestly top 5 worst teachers at CWRU, tests are purposefully ambiguous to trip you up, amount of information to memorize in tandem with other classes is unreasonable (hundreds of slides). HW is useless and tedious, she does not teach in class. No EC, no curves, and just generally a horrid professor. Please inspect her class.
Probably a good person like nice ig and really passionate about biology but can't teach to save her life. Also, its a flipped classroom.
I stopped looking before I crossed the road after I started taking this class.
Makes me contemplate life on a daily basis. Least understanding and sympathetic person I've ever met, she might be a robot.
Hardest class I've ever taken, and yes the content is difficult, but Barbara makes this course 10x harder. She assigns incredibly tedious and difficult HW, and makes test questions that are so specific, when there is already SO much content. No regards for her students' grades, or mental health. Good professors listen to feedback, she doesn't.
Potentially the worst teacher at CWRU. Makes you do 11 slideshows per test with 40-50 slides of info per slideshow. If you think that's bad, you have to know EVERY SINGLE WORD DO NOT MISS A SINGLE WORD ON THESE SLIDES. it's sad because you're not even being tested on whether you know the content or not as the tests are designed to trick you.
she's a horrible lecturer, doesn't care for students, and assigns useless homework that have no contribution your learning. Development and physiology is difficult yes, but her class is a million times harder because of her f wording on tests. dont take this course
She is like any other biology teacher at Case. She doesn't teach much in lecture and just reads of her slides which she posts on Canvas. The tests are only easy if you spend copious amounts of time learning everything on her lecture slides verbatim.
She is by far the worst professor I have had at Case. She doesn't seem to put in much effort for the class although this is her main class that she teaches. She gives videos that are years old and her powerpoints have extra resources that have been taken down showing that the powerpoints have not been looked at. She also gives some outrageous hw.
Her point system is so aids. The year before, she provided plenty of opportunities for extra credit, but this year, she replaced most of them with homework assignments. She refuses to curve the class this year, despite having done so in the past and having the same difficulty tests as previous years.
Phenomenal lectures. As a trained EMT myself I find this course thoroughly engaging. Case studies on slides stimulate unique and creative cognitive patterns which carry over effortlessly to the tests. Yes, learning concepts can be daunting, but I have applied Kuemerle's teachings time and time again on the ambulance. Immaculate course for pre-med.
Flipped learning is not a valid way to teach the class that covers most of the biology on the MCAT. Test questions that always have none of the above, all of the above, and rely on long-winded answers that are wrong based on one word do not test on understanding; they become a gimmick. Also, edging the class with extra credit is dum.
reads slides and does nothing else.
Super lecture heavy, but gives irrelevant and wordy problems. Always brings up "pre-med" students, seems to attempt to weed students out. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
If I die before I turn 20, it would be because of the repercussions of taking this class. I stare longingly at the cars on Euclid because Kuemerle does not teach you anything while also making the tests so hard that you have to remember EVERYTHING on her slideshows. Unreasonably hard course for content that's already hard.
hard professor yeah, but the challenge is worth it if you can power through
Enjoy her teaching style that involves case studies. It makes the students more involved in the class, improving engagement. Her tests have some difficult questions, but they promote critical thinking, which makes the tests enjoyable to take.
Kuemerle has no sympathy and takes pride in making her course overly difficult, but what's shocking is her lack of shame in her inability to teach. Very two-faced; doesn't have the courage to be upfront with students and instead leaves everything open-ended, although she already has her decision in mind. There's a reason for all these reviews.
this class mak me sad :(
Actually the worst professor I have ever had. Not only does she not teach during class lectures and leave you to teach it all to yourself through her horrible videos online but she also does not care about her students.
go back to avon lake please dont teach this class anymore please just go write books about crispr
Chat is a better professor.
this class makes me wanna take the bio out of the biochem major. or just drop out of school.
The content she goes over in class is not AT ALL what the tests are about. Attending her class is a waste of time, you have to study COMPLETELY on ur own for the content you will be tested on.
While taking this class, I stopped looking both ways before I crossed the street. Whatever happens to me, happens. I'd rather take that than ever take this class!
While her lectures are not the most efficient way of teaching, it is possible to understand the content and do well in this class if you engage in active learning throughout the semester. You definitely have to prepare for her exams well in advance and know all the small details, but overall, I've enjoyed having her as a professor.
Barb lectures well and her videos are extremely efficient; you can typically expect to spend less than an hour per week studying. Likewise, the tests could not be more straightforward as long as you hit this one hour studying quota—which I infer may be tough for the flurry of 1/5 reviewers. Do not miss your chance to take this course.
I cry myself to sleep every night thinking about the fact that I have to wake up in the morning and study for this class. She's in denial that she has a flipped classroom.
Doesn't teach, not willing to work with you for grade concerns or scheduling, gives goofy homework assignments unrelated to class content, and makes her tests based on absurd amount of niche terms. You're better off taking this at a local community college or changing your major. Her GTAs are also loyal followers of hers and are unwilling to help.
She is a bad lecturer + doesn't seem considerate of student wellbeing. Going to class was useless. There are weekly essays, and most go beyond the scope of our class. Exams are specific + very difficult as every question includes an all of the above and/or none of the above option. Her active learning module wasn't helpful at all either.
Honestly not much to say about this course, kuemerle is a decent teacher and the content was kind of interesting. I didn't expect much when registering and wasn't disappointed or blown away by the course. Genuinely probably one of the most "average" classes you can sign up for. People love complaining though, maybe future years will be different.
Not sure what all the noise surrounding her is about. I've never really been a good learner (straight B's in high school) and her teaching style worked well for me. Frankly kind of wish other bio courses were as thorough and straightforward as this one. Maybe some people found it confusing? At the end of the day we all learn at our own pace.
If you're not religious, then choose a religion and pray because this class was actually so terrible. She doesn't teach, and the test averages are horrific for every exam.
more interesting topics than the other two bios, boring lectures, and difficult exams. i think this class has herd mentality, though. if you studied as much as you should've, you should be fine. i think i put more work into ochem so i didn't study sufficiently enough for this class. manage your time wisely and make practice exams and active recall
The textbook is written by her so it is not helpful
STAY FAR FAR AWAY.
the one good thing i have to say about this course is that it made me realize a future in stem is absolutely not worth it. would not recommend.
So. Kuemerle has caught multiple people cheating but will NOT curve the exams like she did in previous years. Stopped giving extra credit for going to class too, slaps students in the face with six useless bonus points. She was a premed in college with a low gpa who didn't get into medical school so she's making sure to give premeds a hard time
Take it with Peterson. Got same grades as my friend in Peterson class on Kumerles exams but due to her ridiculous grading my friend got an A in Peterson and I ended up w a B. Just do it in the spring semester freshman year before ochem with Peterson and do not even think about kuemerle.
Most unreasonable professor ever. Horrible lectures/slides, exams, and homework. Also makes you pay for the 6 extra credit points offered which for one I think is super inappropriate and two isn't enough for the challenging nature of this course. Your success is in your own hands if you feel the motivation to study for an ungodly amount of hours.
Real life Sue Sylvester. Don't know how this woman has not been fired yet. I have nightmares about her, not even the content.
"Madame Morrible, Flip It Around, Wicked Witch" (emphasis on Barbara being a wicked witch)
She is the worst professor I have had at Case. I get that the course content is hard but it is no excuse for giving grades back late, just reading off the slides, and not putting in much effort into the course. Please avoid if possible, you will have to do all the learning yourself.
To be clear, I am that "one EMT" (the other post is not me, I swear to all holy). This professor is a good professor teaching something hard. Aside from all the medicine you'll learn, you'll learn accountability. If you study the day before the exam, you're pretty much capped at a C. Med students struggle with this content, but it is so rewarding.
Even though she's caught multiple people cheating, she hasn't punished them and instead punishes the non-cheaters. She both facilitates and excuses cheating and should be reported for academic integrity.
Cannot teach to save her life. She mindlessly reads off the slides in her recorded lectures, and if she starts trying to explain something not on the slides, she proceeds to say the wrong information or forgets entirely, as you can hear her start flipping through her notes to read off of again. Genuinely a robot of a professor.
Probably the worst professor for a mandatory premed course out there. Doesn't know what shes talking about and doesn't care to fix issues within her curriculum. So many terrible things I could say about her I could probably write a whole essay on. If ur taking this class just give up already
The last exam will be highly challenging due to the extensive amount of new and cumulative material tested simultaneously. Since the average will be be low, hopefully she curves as she has done in the previous years. She should have given more extra credit opportunities as she did previous years! Not sure why she changed this year.
she gave me a 5/10 on a hw and then when i asked for some credit back she gave me a 0/10 (2% difference in your grade) sums up the kind of person she is
Does NOT curve keeps saying she will but WILL NOT so just take it with Petersen and save yourself the time and aggravation. Only gives 6 EC points (1% overall), stopped giving extra credit if you go to class. 88 is A and 78 is B. I have a 4.0 and I struggled to get a 78%.
Dr. Kuemerle is a very nice person, however she is an extremely questionable professor. Her textbook and slides often contradict themselves, and as she never repeats questions, each year her class gets more and more difficult. This class is significantly harder than 214/215 and even Chem 223. Her teaching style is not conducive to student success.
People keep on mentioning extra credit yet they fail to acknowledge that she makes students PAY MONEY to even gain access it. I find this extremely inappropriate.
Please do not major in STEM so you can get out of taking this class. You only need to take 2 semesters of bio, and that includes literally any bio course. They brainwash people into believing you have to two 214 + 215 + 216, butyou can just take 214 and 215 since Dilulio and Haywood are actually do able. Everyone with an A cheats or no lifes.
No matter how much I study or how early I start studying for these exams, they genuinely feel impossible to do well on.
Many of the people who get As in this class cheat and get away with it. Kuemerle is not astute enough to catch all of the cheaters, so she interprets it as "high class avg great so now I won't curve!" DONT TAKE THIS CLASS TAKE IT WITH PETERSEN.
run. no matter how well u know the content, its not enough. also have to pay money for the one extra cred
I have post traumatic anger disorder from hearing her fake boston accent ramble on and on about nothing. chem223 x 100 + phys121 x 1000 would not even come close to the amount of pain I felt in this class. avoid. pls. avoid. pls. i dropped purely because i would get more anger issues from listening to her talk
Worst professor I have ever had. Stay away.
So I'd recommend NOT taking this class :(
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most horrid professor I have ever experienced. This is the only class where there is truly no correlation between how well you know the material and the grade you receive. She has no sympathy for students. Genuinely heartless. Not the first RMP review I've written, but the only one I truly mean.
Genuinely terrible; one of the worst professors I've had at CWRU. She should clearly stick to research as she does not have a clue about teaching. Her exams are pure trickery and word play. She is not trying to gauge the students' understanding of the material, but rather tries to weed out STEM students with her insidiously hard exams. Pathetic.
I am literally going to wait until she gets fired to retake this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH KUEMERLE. this class has no business being so hard. She makes typos all the time and her slides make no sense. I need them to invent zeros on rmp just to give this "professor" a lower rating
Wish I could give her a 0
By no means is success in this class an indicator of success in the real world. Her exams were very rigid and required heavy memorization off her slides with no critical thinking. Was not caring in class if people truly grasped the topics and would talk over kids many times. Be ready to be your own teacher as there is no purpose to going to class.
Dr. Kuemerle does not have any interest in teaching the material of this class. In this class, she went on tangents and did not care about students grasping the material. The environment of the lecture was not optimal for learning. 600 people, all talking over her and she does not care at all. Waste of time, with everyone just doing other work.
She does not want to see you succeed. This class has an absurd amount of information- over 150+ slides for each of the 14 chapters. There is also a CUMULATIVE final that is just designed to make you fail. This class doesn't correlate whatsoever to how successful of a doctor you could be. Try to avoid this class if you can.
It would help if Dr. Kuemerle was a good teacher but she isn't. She is one of the worse at case and honestly I don't think she even wants to teach. Her exam expectations are unreasonable. You're expected to memorize every single detail on every single slide (about 400 per exam) and even then that's not sufficient to do well. RUN AWAY.
you can't just screw the class over on test 1 and let the averages be so low, you should fix it.
final was overly hard
Physiology is naturally a content-heavy course. Don't waste time going to class, she just reads slides that are on Canvas. Plus, she got rid of EC. HWs are such a pain. Memorize every slide word for word, read questions carefully, and you're guaranteed an A (Easier said than done). Plan ahead. Space it out. Don't try to cram. You CANT do it. GLHF
Lot of complaints post finals. The questions were nowhere as specific or difficult as the unit tests. Pre-meds need to learn to take any accountability for their inability just to sit down and study; frankly speaks more to how many people aren't cut out for pre-med but want to say they are. Again, rewarding for those in any clinical experience.
Exams 2-4 were fair, but Exam 1 was definitely a learning curve. yes this class has a lot of content, but if you spend time truly studying 4 days before you will be fine. study the lecture slides, use quizlet flashcards, and get the old exams to practice. all the people that complain about this class are the same ones who don't study hard enough.
she's nice.
Wasted $20 just to get 6 extra credit points (barely improved my grade btw) when I could've spent that $20 on 4 Mitchell's ice creams coping bc of how awful this class was. Such a shame she was a bad professor bc the content was actually interesting but exams were so hard and she never taught well in class.
- extra credit behind a paywall - test ques. longer than modern SAT passages and ends with what does eye do? - far too much essay writing for a lecture course - unsure of material from videos during office hours - outdated prerecorded glicthy videos with little in-class teaching - weak proctoring and insufficient space in exam halls
Oh no! I can't have the lecture open on my computer while watching reels and playing clash on my phone! I can't shuffle through my friend's anki set a couple times the night before a test! The test questions are too hard to guess on! I came to class everyday, she HAS to give me extra points! I'm gonna leave a bad review!
Free time? Nope! Won't exist if you take this class.
Hardest class I've taken because of the volume of content. Use Anki to memorize EVERY word from her slides (make sure ur able to recite exactly how it is said on the slide) and use spaced repetition while doing this. Wake up rlly early in the morning of ur exam day, reset ur anki deck, and go through all the flashcards. Tests have lots of word play
Class is difficult but doable if you put in the work-- it's lots of work. If you stay on top of the content after each week you will be fine. However if you decide to cram the day before the test, life will be very difficult
Test questions are all a paragraph long: Don't read the paragraph, it will trick you. Skip to the question that's actually being asked. The answer is always something she mentioned in the slides.
Don't really know what the hate is about. If you get to know Kuemerle outside of class you'll know she's a genuinely sweet lady. She's teaching a class that's known to be difficult and people can't accept that they won't get good grades spoon fed to them for the first time. Study, put in the work, and you'll see good results
Spent 2 hours a day on this class. Tests doable if you spend the time to memorize each slide. HW was odd. Class time wasn't helpful to learning. Just a class testing your memory. Interesting content is the only thing I enjoyed about this class.
Can't teach for the life of her yet gives the most time consuming homework assignments. Videos are not helpful. Take in spring.
She shows little concern for students and lacks effective teaching skills. Exams are unclear and poorly written. I would not recommend this course unless required. While the material is interesting, her approach undermines it, and promoting her own $20 book for extra credit raises ethical concerns.
Offers no support to students with evidence of medical emergencies, cannot lecture to save her life, doesn't take accountability for the problems she writes incorrectly on exams, took away ec from students because one person asked about it.
Could go wrinkle for wrinkle with hooded Sith lord. Don't bother going to lectures, memorize the slides on Canvas with Anki. Lots of content, so don't procrastinate studying
