Test are difficult. You only have two papers though (isn't clear about how to write them). Ask you to write a question to ask her for each reading. Has pet peeves: (1) No clicking pens, (2) must call her Dr. Lewis, (3) Does not repeat herself. Avoid if poss.
She's a neat lady- just the assignments are a little demanding especially if you have more than just 2 classes there to deal with during the week. So.. eh. But it's an OK class. Just stay on top of the work and you'll be fine.
Dr. Lewis is an excellent teacher and keeps you on your toes. She has a very laid-back attitude if you get to know her, but is somewhat strict in the classroom. I would reccommend her to anyone that is willing to work hard and doesn't take grading personally. She has a lot of fun in the classroom and she is always willing to help. Beware prudes!
very helpful, keeps you busy. sticks to curriculum, and tries to make it easier. great lady, fun to talk to, and pretty neat class
If you don't like reading about stories related to the struggles of women don't take this class.
she is an excellent teacher that I ever taken. when I took Comp 1 i really had a horrible teacher who was not ready to impact the knowledge to her student but when I took Dr Lewis that is when i really learnt how to write very well. she taught me Comp 2, America lit 1&2 this is a straight A class, attendance is mandatory but you can only miss clas
crazy funny lady !! She really knows what she is talking about. Show up and do what she says and you can make an A. She likes it her way so do what she says. Very interesting and funny !! TAKE HER !! but be prepared to show up and do the work. 2 papers and 2 tests in ameri lit 1.
very nice after you get to know her, but do Not GET ON YOUR BACK SIDE OR ITS OVER
Dr. Lewis is a good teacher, but she is very domineering and doesn't allow much class discussion. Every single bit of the subject matter she discusses deals with Christianity. She doesn't give you any idea what's on the tests, and she doesn't even grade the papers, they're either "acceptable" or "non-acceptable, whatever that means.
Someone should have told me the Bible is a prerequisite to her class. If you want to join in her discussion you better know the Bible inside and out. Other wise you will receive a look like your a moron. Before this class I liked English, she turned me off of it.
Dr. Lewis can be strict at times and does not like to repeat things. She can be forgetful and you must call her DR. LEWIS! Don't get on her bad side or its over. She talks a lot about feminism, strong women, and the bible. She also grades hard but once you learn HER style of writing it's not so bad. I would not recommend her.
Dr. Lewis is a great teacher. her class is interesting & i recommend it just for that purpose alone. This class was easy for some & difficult for others b/c she doesn't allow room for creativeness in your essays. she tell u how to writ them word for word & that's how it needs to be or u won't get accepted.
Dr. Lewis is very strict, but a very good teacher. Don't let the negative comments deter you from taking a class with her. In the first few weeks, she tries to weed out the kids that don't try. If you make an effort to do well in the class, you will. Go see her during office hours for help on your essays. She will tell you EXACTLY what to change!
she is a very rude a critic, she only listens to herself and if you try your heart out you can only get a C. SHE IS A HARSH GRADER. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Dr. Lewis was extremely hard! I found her coments in class to be very rude and discriminating. The tests were rediculous and no one passed the final exam. The class required you to read from two different books which I found interesting. I was taking the class out of self interest which was a huge mistake!
is a very good teacher , she is a bit hard if you what she tells you , you can pull a A or B ... GREAT TEACHER !!! MAKES YOU WORK FOR YOUR GOOD : )
overall fair but unbending, grades papers how she says she will but does not take any late work or excuses, class is not hard if you do your papers exactly how she wants, class time useless but show up for participation grade
if you take her class be ready to work... Do the readings, write the papers how she says(she idiot proofs them!) and if you have any problems go to her office hours: she will practically write the paper for you if you ask for help. anyone who does not pass her class fail by their own accord b/c she is very helpful- just ask!
Teacher is alright. She can be a bit inconsistent at times with the papers. Be prepared to work and read the stories. Easy to pass if you do the work.
Good prof, but very hard... all of my papers had to be resubmitted multiple times before finally being accepted. Make sure to go to her office for help. She's very knowledgable and you can learn a lot from her... but be prepared - read EVERY assigned story and keep up with the papers! Don't slack..
This teacher is great. She can be tough and she doesnt take excuses of any kind, but if your honest and you do the work you will get an A. With the format she has you use the papers write themselfs. The only reason anyone would struggle in this class is if they did'nt read the assignments or follow her process. I have taken her for 2 classses
Dr. Lewis was constantly late, only to attack students who were also late. She would hand back papers the day of the next due date, but they would not be graded. Three times she had not read a story she assigned everyone else to read. Following the syllabus was usless because she would change her mind on how/when to turn papers in.
This was the most difficult English class I've ever taken. Not because of the subject but because of the professor. She hands back papers the day that the next one is due, doesn't read half the stories she assigns, shows up late, but gets upset when students come in late or leave early. Constantly complained about how stressed she is...what a wreck
Constantly complained about how stressed and tired she was. When you ask a question she makes sure to embarrass you and get upset Changes her mind constantly on how she wants things done thats why I didn't get an A. She says to go to her office for help don't she tells you to go to the lab when you get there.

Changes her mind constantly on how she wants things done thats why I didn't get an A. She says to go to her office for help don't she tells you to go to the lab when you get there.
Please keep in mind that some of the better reviews for Dr. Lewis are from '10 and earlier. I can assure you she's burnt out and it shows. Lack of enthusiasm, clarity and respect is what you'll get from her. Harsh grader with an extremely abrasive personality. Extremely disappointed with her class. Ironically she is also the Asst. Dean at RR ACC.
Dr. Lewis is absolutely the worst teacher! She is rude, bitter, does not like to help, and constantly insults her students. She expects for you to be able to read her mind and when you cant she flips out. Not to mention her grading makes no sense, how she is able to be assistant dean position blows my mind away.
Best English professor i've had! She is strict and has her ways but everything is laid out for you. If you follow her directions, there is no way you can fail. Get your papers accepted in reasonable time so you can take the C test before the deadline and move on to the A & B papers. Go see her in office hours. Don't get on her bad side! Great class
while yes this teacher is extremley rude and she forgets alot of things she has said then takes it out on the class, she was easy to take. i tooke engl 1302 and all you have to do is follow her outline on the syllabus and bam maybe a few edits but nothing too terrible. i would recomend her so what if shese rude.
If you want an easy A, go professor Lewis. All you have to do is show up for class for participation points, and follow the format for the papers and that's it. If you get offended easily, don't take her. She can be rude, aggressive and she is not afraid to call you out.
She is one of those professors who you have to understand in order to like. She can be difficult or seem like she's being rude, but it's just her straight forward-ness. She does her job well, and takes pride in her accomplishments. I recommend taking her if you want to actually learn, rather than study the material and forget about it.
I took comp II, If you listen and can follow instructions in the packet she gives you, no problem. If you have difficulties go to her office during office hours and she will be glad to help. She is extremely knowledgeable and deserves a tremendous amount of respect. She has a tough outer shell but a really big heart underneath. Loved her!!
Good teacher, very helpful if you go to her office and talk to her. If you can follow the "Lewis Way" packet she gives you, there is no way you should maany gradlower than B.
I really had a better understanding or writing after this class. I learned so much, and I'm very grateful for taking this class.
Took Dr. Lewis for Comp 2 and received an easy A. She gives you a packet that tells you how to write every paper. Follow the instructions and go to lab and you'll breeze through. Doesn't teach a ton, but you learn how to write analytically. She can be rude and offensive but just do your work and you should easily get an A.
One of my favorite professors. I loved her life story, very motivating and she is extremely brilliant! She is tough as nails and caring at the same time. She has certainly enriched my life! I highly recommend her.
Superb professor when she is actually teaching elements of fiction. Her insights into assigned readings are simply outstanding AND extremely enjoyable. However, beware, she has a mean streak! If she is in a bad mood or you cross her (intentionally or otherwise), she will berate you in an instant. This often crosses into unrighteous dominion.
She is a horrible teacher. She never gave any straight answers, and was always late but you can never be late. her assistant was far too nosey, and if you have an issue, like your sick, the whole class will know! loves to pick favorites, and grades on who she likes most, the African Americans in our class received special treatment as well.
Honestly shes a great prof. Super easy. She maybe rude at times. Just act like you are trying and she'll help you out. Follow her packet, and go to the tutors she tells you about. She pretty much tells you how to the write the paper. Easy A
If you're taking this class "just for the credit" chose another professor; Dr Lewis is not the professor for people who are there "just for the credit." If you're taking her class in preparation of higher rigors of writing and to enhance your capability to communicate effectively, she is the professor for you. She has standards - most at ACC don't.
Dr. Lewis is a great teacher. Each students grade depends on their ability to adhere to the schedule and complete the assignments. Dr. Lewis is extremely clear with the syllabus and no student should be confused as to what is expected of them. If you're looking to improve your skills as a reader and as a writer, take this class! A+
Very good teacher. She can be tough sometimes, but that helped me be a better student and writer. I took Dr. Lewis for English Comp 2 and World Lit 2. She shares a lot of personal information about herself and that allowed me to connect with her and the class better. She's unconventional and that makes her standout as an english teacher.
This professor made me LOVE college, she was very clear on how she wanted things done and if you followed her instructions you made a great grade! she is friendly and she was and still is one of the best professors I've ever had!
Dr. Lewis is clear and concise at the beginning of the semester of what she expects from you and if you follow her directions you will pass with ease.
Dr. Lewis is intense b/c she wants everyone to understand the expectations. Read the material & follow her instructions and you’ll get an A. Go to the learning lab to meet w/her assistants to learn the “123”way before starting your 1st paper. Dr. Lewis is passionate and doesn’t have time for people who aren’t taking their education seriously.
Follow instructions in the packet. You can find other people's papers online and use them as a guide to kind of know what you need to do. Papers are simple to do. C paper test is easy dont be nervous B and A are just as easy as long as you pay attention to the instructions. Intimidating but she is sweet. You are on her time not the other way around
Dr. Lewis prepares students for later academic study. The lessons I learned in her class have been applicable through my undergraduate completion. Her method, “The Lewis Way”, has earned me more than one A on graduate papers in business school. Take her class, pay attention, learn, and move on.
Incredibly interesting and insightful person. Her passion for analyzing texts through one's own personal lense is a major aspect of her teaching, which makes it fun. May push assignments back, but STAY ON TOP of all papers, or ahead to be safe and you will be good. Emphasizes the value of hard work. Clear instructions. Overall, great experience!
Passionate about students learning how to deal with the world, which is cool and shows in her teaching. Classes get shorter and shorter throughout semester! Has very specific (realistic) expectations for papers. Demands a lot of respect; show her that. May change the calendar, but not without good notice and reasonableness. Very available for you.
She was an awful teacher. Never really gave good answers, and was constantly telling personal stories about her kids with cancer. She will not tolerate dumb questions, or people not paying attention.
She was in a terrible mood every class and admitted it was because she didn't eat. Finally someone bought her a cheeseburger. Almost every story was centered around a black character. Coincidence? She is extremely strict about due dates but she changes them at the last minute so watch out! I used to love English but this class ruined it for me.
It's true, she can be very tough but I personally see this as a good thing as she is helping to prepare you for the 'real world'. At times I found myself very intimidated by her and at others she had me laughing until my sides hurt. Don't take this class if you aren't willing to put forth the effort and can't follow directions.
Dr. Lewis was tough, but I felt like I earned my grade. You MUST ask for help! The packet she will give you is your bible. Follow her instructions and you will do well. She can seem a bit snippy, but she will respect you if you listen, do the readings, and work hard. This is NOT an easy class, but you will feel great if you can get through to her.
Dr. Lewis is by her syllabus, I learned a lot in this class for effective writing. Follow her plan on how she wants your papers and you will fine. Attendance is a must or you will be dropped.
I don't know where all the good reviews are coming from, but this teacher is a nightmare!!!! She treats you like your in middle school, she also tells the whole class your private business and other peoples business. If you take her 16 week course she will cut it by 3 weeks at the end and MAKE you turn in your B and A papers in a week, RUUUUN!
IF you want an A, start early, finish all your papers asap, do not wait for her to return them if they are accepted or not. Go to the next paper. READ THE STORIES BEFORE CLASS. Have your comments and questions ready on her desk. NO SPELLING ERRORS for QC. YOU must be ready to get A or B. THE SYLLABUS IS NOT AS CLEAR as it SHOULD BE TO HER STANDARDS
Worst professor I've ever had. This is not an English class, this is a "Who can follow Dr. Lewis' instructions the most" class and her instructions are not clear. To give an idea about how awful she is one of my papers was not accepted because I put the wrong date on it. Avoid this class if you want to have your own opinion and write how you want.
She may be a little intimidating, but if you follow her "Lewis way" you should do fine. She gives you a 50 page handout on the first day and it literally gives you step by step instructions on how to write your papers. There's no reason why you should fail this class. She's very consistent with her office hours and will help you if you need it.
Intimidated by Dr. Lewis at first. Eventually became one of the professors I respect the most. Very strict on papers, has her own way to write them. Really funny in her story telling. Ended up taking her again for American Lit. Also, check out the book she wrote! Would take her again if given the opportunity.
Make sure you're VERY clear on what to do for the papers, and take them all to the tutors she mentions. Don't miss class. Take detailed notes of all of the readings and study them, because most of her test is about quotes and facts from the reading assignments, and it ain't multiple choice. The margin for error in this class is razor thin.
If you want the chance to truly write, have an opinion, and to be treated with respect. RUN. Her class isn't worth her attitude or her way of grading. If you do end up in her class, it is her way or the highway.
Professor Lewis is unlike any teacher I have had. She is harsh and does very little teaching. She degrades students for engaging in class, makes students run errands for her, and does not follow the syllabus. This class is much like taking a class online so if you enjoy the self-teaching method then this is the class for you.
I took two of Dr. Lewis' classes in 2007 and her classes stand out the most in retrospect almost a decade later. She is a fascinating woman, and although she can be kind of scary sometimes, it is worth withstanding because she is also very funny. If you work hard and listen to what she tells you to do, you should do fine in her class.
Dr. Lewis is very strict on how she wants you to write your essays for her class. If you don't write them HER way, you will not pass. She does NOT do a very good job at explaining what she expects from you in your papers, its best if you go to her during office hours. You will need the textbook, a lot of assignments will be included in there.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES! Dr. Lewis was always late to my English Comp II class and she degraded students who tried to ask questions and participate in class. She made students run errands for her and she was very rude and judgmental.. not to mention arrogant. You have to do everything the "Dr. Lewis way." She made school very unenjoyable.
My suggestions to anyone considering professor Lewis would be read through the positive and negative. They say the same thing its just the people who are different, if you like clear, concise, and exact teaching take Dr Lewis. If you are sensitive, don't take criticism well, and cant follow instructions then don't take her its that simple.
She is an Amazing Professor!!! Dr. Lewis is ready to help anybody when they need it. She is very understanding when it comes to school-related topics and personal problems. The grading criteria is straight forward and easy to follow as long as you listen and pay attention. Easy 'A'.I would definitely recommend Dr. Lewis to everybody!
Dr. Lewis teaches "through application" meaning she spends the entire class talking about herself instead of the literature. Some of the things she takes off points for are trivial and she changes her opinion on what is right or wrong depending on how she feels. The rest is easy, just study and go in to have her review your essay.
She didn't even read the paper because my title page was not in the proper format. It was In MLA format but she wanted it to be her way or the highway.
Too strict on her essay formatting. A little too harsh sometimes, grading and in class.
I don't mind strict professors but this professor is unapproachable. If you don't repeat her word by word your wrong. If your paper is one space to far over she won't even read it and gives off major attitude. Not asking to be baby sat but HER JOB IS TO HELP not be disrepectful.
For anyone who struggles with writing she is not the professor for you. Her way or the highway, ok fine but she doesn't help those who are having trouble with the Lewis way . She states because she gives her expectations in her pack she can't help, I think that dumb especially if a student is coming to her for isn't that the professors job?
If you have a lot going on in your personal life DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is the least understanding professor I have had yet. She wants to be respected but doesn't respect anybody but herself. If you struggle with the Lewis way she treats you as if your dumb and don't pay attention, even if you truly might be struggling, shes unapproachable.
Don't know why a lot of people don't like her. She might be a bit harsh but is willing to help you. Essays are pretty easy and straight forward. Just make sure its done in HER FORMAT.
Dr. Barbara Williams Lewis is an amazing professor. She is thought provoking; she will challenge you! She is straight and to the point. I love her!
Dr. Lewis is VERY strict. Iron clad no-cellphone rule, yells at you day one if you have one out. Specific requirements for papers, not always spelled out. Pop quizzes test the obscure things in reading. Lectures are listening to her interpretations of readings. Be ready for lots of religious overtones and comments in class. Abrasive personality.
Participation matters, willing to help if you go get it. Her way or no way. Pay attention to her, take notes if not understanding, don't second guess yourself, if unsure of her instructions, be very clear to ask. Visit her on office hours for clarification. Very strict but, she is very intelligent.
Love her! I've taken her twice and would again. Yeah, she's intimidating and stern but you can tell that she has a passion about what she teaches. Dr. Lewis is very particular and thorough about how she wants the essays written. Very insightful woman who's not afraid to tackle controversial topics. She's one of the best teachers I've taken at ACC.
I've been exposed to some of the most thought-provoking literature in her class. Dr. Lewis makes English fun by playing songs mentioned in the readings, having groups perform dialogue from stories, & showing pictures of an author to help you get a better sense of the writer's mind. I enjoyed hearing her feedback on our written analysis of readings.
Dr. Lewis is an excellent professor. Very insightful and willing to give you help if you ask. Very specific in her instructions and a tough grader. I enjoyed this class even with the level of difficulty. Make sure to follow the syllabus to the T
If you have delicate sensibilities, avoid her class at all costs. She knows her stuff and will only go over your paper once before its due -- and will do this to only one paper all semester. Extremely, brutally clear about her expectations. Probably one of the best professors you'll ever have if you know what's good for ya.
Her method of having up to 3 final essays for a B & A is frankly, too cumbersome for a lot of students and very unnecessary. She is a rather tough grader & assigns reading material after ever class. Insensitive and rude to students. Received the only C of my core curriculum from this professor. Avoid this professor if you are a non English major.
I love Dr. Lewis! I took her for two English II and American Literature. Yes, she is a tough grader and she also has her own 'The Lewis Way' style of writing. She's strict, but also hilarious. Which is why it made this class fun to me. However, if you are a student that study hard for an A, then take her class. If you are not, then don't take it.
she's worth taking, she tells you EXACTLY what to do for each paper in her packets, EXACTLY, if you don't follow EXACTLY what to do she'll let you know. 1 of the Best if not THE best professor I've had. You may feel shes too blunt with you at times or rude, the problem isn't her, it's that you're too soft. She'll prepare for future universities.
She has her own way of doing things and a lot of times it does not make sense. If you do take her class, just be ready for major overload on reading and grading that does not always make the most sense to anyone but her. Turning in questions at the beginning of class is always important because she keeps track of it and always have essay's on time.
Dr. Lewis was by far one of the best instructors that Ive had. As long as you follow her instructions to the letter and come to her for help or feedback, then the course is a breeze. This is not a course you can pass by doing what you want, how you want, and when you want to.
Regardless of any other ratings, at face value Dr. Lewis is a stern older lady that some might find intimidating at first. But mind wise, she is a caring and sassy figure much like my grandma- as long as you do your work, listen to what she says, and be respectful; she truly cares about broadening your English skills.
Dr. Lewis is very direct about what you need to do to get an A. Although her packet of instructions is helpful, the B and A paper directions can get quite confusing so be sure to get started on those ahead of time. Dr. Lewis is a great storyteller and class time is always interesting. Just be sure to do EXACTLY what she says and don't be scared!
Professor Lewis teaches very strictly, and doesn't baby anyone. It's imperative that students keep course materials from day one to finals, and that they follow all instructions as provided. Students will be punished for not making a consistent effort, even if the task may seem excess or extra. Learn from her instructions, and you will succeed.
Worst college class I've ever taken. Readings are not hard but class guidelines are exacting & nonsensical to the point of being comical. Yells & condescends to students like they are in high school. Over half of each class is spent telling anecdotes about herself. Makes everything sexual. Obviously still teaching because of tenure. Learned little.
Barbara gives no help whatsoever. If you are struggling too bad... she refuses to help anybody, in fact she wont even specify your mistakes. She just claims youre wrong and leaves it at that, on top of that she wont tell you why your grades are the way they are, or why your essays dont get accepted. Overall, the absolute worst Professor at ACC!
Ridiculous... from the way she makes her tests to her guidelines on how to write a good paper. Her tests contain sentences from different literary works, and the student has to fill in the blanks for the missing words. On essays, there's no such thing as MLA format, instead there's "The Lewis Way". I got 100's in all my other lit classes STAY AWAY!
Reading previous reviews, I'll agree she doesn't baby anyone, but I hardly think bluntly worded emails and ridiculous grading criteria constitute babying. "The Lewis Way" allows for no creativity or flexibility and is below high school level comp. Your paper will NOT be accepted unless you do it her way. "central ideas MUST be one word" Wow...
Dr Lewis is a very good professor. She is strict when grading papers, but as long as you do what she says, you will pass. There are about 5 papers you need to write and after you pass those you can write the C paper. After writing the C, you'll need to do the B and finally the A. She might seem mean, but she will help you if you ask for help.
I recommend taking Comp 1 with Dr Lewis before going to Comp 2 since you'll understand her style to be more likely to get an A. Comp 2 felt easier to me than Comp 1. In comp 2 though, you'll have to read a whole book and write a paper about it. As long as you try and ask for help, she will tell you where you're wrong and help you.
DO NOT take her if you're a creative writer. Essay have to follow her template exactly (The Lewis essay styles). She took 4ever to reply emails. When she sends emails to you, read it carefully bc her email super confusing. Don't need to buy the book cause you can find most of the stories onl.
Get ready to read her syllabus & packet cause she won't answer any ques if the answer is somewhere in those. The essay have to follow the template 100%. Word counts can't be over or less than what she wants. The paper will be return until your paper follows Lewis' way. Her emails to the class is confusing, read it carefully. Good luck!
I took Dr. Lewis's class in the summer of 2020. You do have to sign in every day (Mon-Thurs) for attendance, but other than this all we did was write papers. We only used the textbook twice, once for reading questions and once for a paper. She is a very lenient grader and sticks to the syllabus. Any emails I sent her were answered within a day.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ONLINE. She gives no lectures to look back at. No instruction for anything. Got my first ever bad writing grade in my life because she would take off 5 points for forgetting to put the date and so on. Petty and mean in her grading. Hasn't taught us one thing then grades extremely hard. Doesn't give test reviews.
Calls herself a "hard professor," but is honestly just an ass with disrespectful behavior to her own students. Her class is fine though, just her attitude that is strongly offputting.
Throughout the class, you will be assigned 7 papers. You cannot move on from a paper until it has been accepted. She is a very tough grader and wants the paper written in her own way, If you are good at writing essays and adapting to a new syllabus take her, if you are bad at deadlines and essays do not take her. She cares a lot about her students.
Lewis is by far the most unprofessional professor I have ever had. She often talks down to her students and does not allow any excuses for missed classes. She expects all students to write papers in her style, a style that is painfully robotic and at the level of a 10th grade student. No one in my class enjoyed her.
One of my very first English classes was with her & all I have to say is yikes. She's quite snappy when it comes to asking questions, so it's nerve-racking to ask for help. Her grading system is strange & she fails to ever really explain it. She's not very helpful & almost rude when it comes to explaining papers. Wouldn't recommend to anyone!
Doesn't give a single grade until the very end of the semester. She will have you write 4 papers for absolutely no credit and must "accept" each and every one of them before you are eligible to even try for a C in the course. Ridiculous. If any other professor is available, choose them. This lady acts like she's teaching at Harvard.
I am currently taking her for summer session to and she does not upload anything on blackboard she complains that she doesnt know how to use technology also she re words everything when she said some thing else and she also is rude and she also wants everything her way and you dont need the textbook because you can find all the stories in PDFs
I loved Dr. Lewis. As long as you take her advice and follow her syllabus, the class will be an easy A. I noticed she gave students a lot of chances to get homework turned in. She does not take kindly to disrespectful attitude. If you have your camera on during lectures, she will call on you a lot!
Horrible teacher, would not recommend to my worst enemy. Does not explain material in any type of way and also extremely rude.
Do not take this class online! She gives very little information, she has her own style of writing she will expect you to learn and use, and is very rude and belittling.
She is absolutely amazing. She is very tough and will not put up with your excuses and laziness. She will be your best friend or your worst enemy, but YOU get to chose. Show up, use your voice, write your papers, read your homework, and she will be your favorite teacher ever. Do not waste her time, and she will not waste yours.
Provides a supplemental package that tells you EXACTLY how she wants her papers written. I see complaints about that but honestly it's a map to making an A. How could you complain? Let go of ego and just write it the Lewis way. Give her your full participation or she will call you out. Class discussion is funny/feminist. I love this Professor.
I took her for a 8-week Spring Course and that made it very difficult and i do not recommend to ANYONE. No actual lectures, explanations, or immediate help. With that said, Dr.Lewis would be an amazing Professor to take a full length course with. She gives great feedback on papers which help you build a great foundation towards an A.
My first class day started on zoom due to the pandemic. She yelled at me for sending a GroupMe link in the zoom chat because she thought all the students would talk bad about her behind her back. She is rude most of the time but if you write good papers that make her laugh, she will be a little lenient at the end of the semester with final grade.
Totally changed my world. Writing was always one of my weakest subjects until she showed me that it wasn't that hard to do. Also, she isn't "rude" or "mean" she's honest, and tells you exactly what to do, not out of stubbornness, but because she wants all to succeed. She gives you examples of each assignment, follow them, and an A or B will be easy
I had Dr. Lewis my first semester of college, and she made me want to quit. I'm a junior now, and her class is the only B I've received. The final paper to get to an "A" had extremely vague instructions. I had to re-submit my "C" paper 3 times before she told me I had written the essay on the WRONG PART of the textbook. She can be snarky, too.
Dr. Lewis is an interesting professor and I do enjoy some of the stories covered in the class but I find her teaching style to be very outdated. She refuses to use technology and her grading style is awful. I recommend everyone to look up their professor prior to taking the class. Her attitude is unprofessional and does not belong in a school.
I never really learned anything from this class. Most of the class time she was feared by students because of her attitude. She is very precise about what she is looking for when grading your paper so be sure to follow ALL directions. Even the smallest error will get you points taken off.
Get on her good side. If you actually pay attention and read her book that she wrote and write a good paper on her book, she will like you. If you barely come to class and give her teenage attitude, she will not take that well. She gives respect as she receives it.
Write the "Lewis Way" and you will have no problem getting an A in this class so long as you are flexible enough to assimilate. It might be a pain at first but you'll grow to know it as a group of very simple rules to follow. Her strict demeanor may be intimidating but if uncalled for she apologizes. Don't be scared, work WITH and not against = 100
Professor Lewis was a great professor but she's challenging. I've never gotten lower than an A in writing class in my life but she grades tough. Just follow instructions, show up to class, do the readings & go to office hours for help. She wants to help students succeed but can't help if you don't put in effort. Would definitely take her again!
Just follow the rubric but you have to follow her interpretation of the rubric otherwise you'll fail. I had to rewrite at least 3 of the essays assigned because its impossible to please her. Stay far away from this professor. She across as arrogant most times when talking about students and will discuss your grade in front of the whole class.
If you're considering or on edge about taking her 1301 class, don't.
I remember one time for our very last paper to turn in. She emailed me saying it didn't meet with her grading system. Without explaining it to me. She didn't read it basically. And I failed it. So if you don't want to be mad over a paper like I was, don't take her class. She's also pretentious af too so
I really wanted to take this course, however Dr. Lewis made it quite impossible to do so. It was difficult experience, she had stated I am not ready for the course and to withdrawal immediately, the only particular reason was my comp I class had not transferred in time for me to take this course. (I had gotten an 89 in)
Dr. Lewis is irrefutably passionate about what she does and is very knowledgeable on the topics she covers. Her lectures are inspiring and very introspective. The actual assignments, though, are tough. There are 5 grades- participation and 4 papers, so not much room for mistakes. She grades papers very harshly and inconsistently. She's very direct.
I cannot understand how she is not fired yet. She is crass, disrespectful and unwilling to adapt to modern technology. If you want to be treated like an elementary misfit, take this class. I will say she gives multiple chances on papers which is out of character. But if you dare try to go to the restroom or bring any drinks into class..good luck.
She can be difficult but she was also very funny and professional. She wasn't very perceptive to feedback and didn't elaborate on required assignments. She will call someone out if she thinks they are wrong. She was very vague. If you want to pass her class follow her written instructions perfectly or you will fail.
Dr. Lewis is an incredibly tough grader, often to ridiculous extremes. She had unclear grading criteria, especially when it comes to grammar and formatting. She has made some derogatory remarks to/about students while in front of the class. She is incredibly strict with rules inside and outside of class. I would not recommend taking her classes.
Dr. Lewis was a great teacher, her syllabus was pretty intense, but she was very clear and concise about what she looked for and how the papers needed to be structured. Great class, the stories she chose were very real and thought provoking. Make sure to follow everything she says to the "T", and you will get along just fine with her.
In all my 5 years a ACC I have never had a teacher so rude. FOLLOW HER SYLLABUS TO PASS!! She is extremely open about her hate for people, opinions, and has no problem openly yelling or raising her voice at students. She is quite arrogant and prides herself in her writing capabilities. I am surprised a teacher like this is at ACC and not fired.
She is arrogant and a tough grader on essays, nevertheless she will give you a second chance on turning it in
If your only option is to take her class, take it in person. She is not tech-savvy, making it hard to communicate, she is not approachable, is very rude, and her syllabus is a mess. Worst online class experience. If you have no other choice, READ THE SYLABUS! and ask questions, get clarity from the very beginning. This class made me cry.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS! She has an amount of times you can be late/absent before she docks your grade! Not tech-savvy, she'll get mad if you have your phone/laptop out, so get used to writing and printing. Class discussions are fun and informative. Essays were tough but follow the rubric. Got a 100 on my final paper just by following the Lewis Way lol
If you are planning to take this class online, DON'T. through out the whole semester, I have sent her 20 emails, AND SHE REPLIED TO ONE. She made a mistake on the due date of the papers, and she expected us to catch her mistake, but she still gave us a penalty. She is not organized, her BB is a mess. And the instructions on the paper are not clear.
Professor Lewis is a tough but fair grader. While her expectations are high, engaging with her system and using resources like unstuck study can help you succeed. Expect a challenging but rewarding course.
I honestly don't know why people complain about her so much. People who rated her bad most likely dropped out within the first week and didn't get to know her well. She has an attitude I get it, but she will never disrespect you. Her class is not difficult, just follow her format (super easy) and you'll get a good grade. :) Good professor.
Course grade consists of 4 papers. She knows what she wants and how she wants it. She can come off as rude or arrogant, but all the times I've seen it its because students were being rude first. She is probably the most experienced English professor in the department. Be on time, follow the format, and listen to her instructions and you will pass.
I found this class uninspiring. For a "Discussion Oriented" class, there was little discussion. It was read the material, write a question, and listen to her talk for the entire class. She talks about religion and her own beliefs too much, which is unprofessional, and is generally self-centered. However, she has clear guidelines and grades fairly.
She wants you to follow her supplement packet word by word which is difficult because her supplement has different answers for everything. She isn't good at giving feedback at all and sometimes comes off as rude. She is stern and I know the difference between rude and stern. She balled up her fist and started shaking when reading my paper.
Don't take this class if you don't want to be publicly humiliated. I wouldn't say I learned anything from this class, since the year was composed of going over short stories where only her interpretation was the correct one, and the occasional grading of papers done with the entire class. Unfortunately, I can't add more because of the limit on here
Dr.Barbara Lewis is ok as a professor in my mind she is very vocal about her beliefs with some being unnecessary and some being good for the course. However communication was not easy and she was very blunt and rude. Overall not a good class could have been better but I scraped through it cause I couldn't take her seriously.
Great teacher. Funny. Interesting stories. Engaging. Some may think shes strict but if you following her instructions and what shes asking for you'll do well. I had her during the summer for 5 weeks. We had a paper due every week after the first week. I recommend her class.
She is not the best professor at all, however if you're looking for an easy A, your good. She doesn't give any feedback or anything, but if you already know how to do basic English and writing, you will be okay. It is not a hard class, but she is scatterbrained, doesn't teach anything, and you basically sit there and do nothing. Only 4 essays.
This class is kind of easy, but my god Dr. Lewis is rude. The supplemental packed has everything you need but it also doesn't. She says things in class that are crucial to certain papers you will write and if you are not in class she expects you to know every detail even if you missed. Basically very rude woman, but easy-ish class.
