Have you heard of the Soup Nazi, we'll she is the Risk Management Nazi.

She tells irrelevant stories in class. Her lecture is unclear. She is very disorganized in both her lecture and her notes. She seems like a (fairly) nice person, I just do not think that she is suitable for teaching an honor's course.
I enjoyed her class. The department itself is very strict with the teaching material so she has to stick by it. But in that though, she is very clear and helpful and easy to approach.
She's not exactly easy but if you put in your fair share of work, you'll get the results. If risk management is not your major, take someone else. why sweat it?
She is very strict but she knows her stuff.
I think she's too absorbed to RMI, and she should be open minded about other bus disciplines. She made it impossible for one to get full credit on HW, and she never gave feedback on HW and exams. she has this air which fended me off if i wanted to ask Q
you spend the entire class copying endless amounts of notes rather than actually learning the material. i would take someone else
Worst teacher ever..too strict, doesn't give good grades and makes it near impossible for you to pass. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER..

If your homework isn't done exactly how she wants it, then its wrong. If you don't answer EVERY part of a question on a test, the WHOLE question is wrong. If your not there @ exactly when class is supposed to start, then your late. Seems to think her class is the only one your taking.BAD TEACHER.
She may be strict about what she wants but she makes it very clear on how to achieve full credit. If you do what she says and answer how she wants it, you'll get an A! And she is easy to talk to during her office houts.
Don't bother asking her for help, because she won't give it to you. If you have any questions about homework, test questions, etc, she refers you to her TA's because she "can't look at 120 kids homework." Horrible teacher, and couldn't care less if students get good grades. A lot of ppl drop out.

She really cares about people. If you want to know the truth...I mean, if you want to get some answers about reality, and what is going on in the real world outside your little mind, take a class with Dr. Manaka, she's fantastic.
The bulk of the test comes from knowledge of the notes a person would receive when she writes them on the board. She tells wonderful stores that help retain some of the knowledge from the lecture. Come to class and review and understand the notes you will do well in her class.
Excellent teacher but she gives a decent amount of work and attendence is very important. If you are will to give an effort you will learn a lot.
Good Teacher all together, Provides help outside out of the class...if you are having trouble with the class...she will definitely help you...but her policies on attendance are very strict and her tests are very difficult....If you are 2 minutes late to class, you are marked absent...HORRIBLE POLICY
I agree she is an excellent teacher, no doubt about that! But her HW take over 5 hours to do if you want a decent good, just wait till u see the exam. YOu'll want to die!
Worthless to say the least. Thinks she is popular because student kiss her ass to get a good grade. I don't recommend her. If I could I would fire her, unforntately I can't.
She is the best professor I had the pleasure of taking during my 4 years at Temple. One of the only teachers who actually provoked real thought, not strict memorization. Don't take her if you want to slack.
I read my notes over and over and sat near the front of the room and still fail the test. plus I did bad on the first hw so I withdraw from that course. I hope when I take it again I get some else. This class is very strict on top of thatone second late you are counted absented for no reason at all
If you pay attention and take good notes, you will do well, she does tell some interesting stories that makes you remember different topics in class but she is a bit strict
She is strict, but everything is organized and she's nice once you get to know her. For the ppl who think her class is so hard, you might not be that bright b/c I'm getting like a 95% and I spent an hour on each of the 3 HW's and a few hours studying each of the tests, not too much work
This is a difficult class and to plus it i had this teacher. she is difficult to deal with. no doubt she explains things well with her long stories, but its tough to get a C in this one! My advice is ""Be carefull before u take her.""
Very Organized. Interesting. If you take good notes. Basically write down everything she writes down. Understand everything. U can pass easily. Without even cracking open the textbook. Test are from the notes.
Great teacher, the best your going to come across in this department. alot of work but and attendance is extreme for extra points that is definitely needed. Must take.
DONT EVER TAKE THIS TEACHER-SHE SUCKS!!
WHAT A ****!
She is very unhelpful and favors a few in her class. If you like to kiss ass and enjoy pretense and pointless ramblings take this class. She disrupts class and kicks people out all the time and is very, very strict. Like grammar school strict. Try to take Drennen or someone else instead. Also she writes insessantly and notes are unclear.
waste of time- she didn't review for exams, made students uncomfortable and focused too much on medical insurance section
CONSTANT notes taking. She takes attentance very seriously. You need to know your notes in order to ace her exams.
Temple needs to get rid of here, no respect for her students. Really, cares about power tripping then teaching. Do not take her!!!
One of the best teacher's that I had at Temple (if you want to learn). Teaches her undergraduate courses like graduate classes. You will understand the material upon the end class.
don't expect to pass this class if your not gonna read your book or skip any classes, shes the most anal professor i've ever had in my 4 years of college. she has these power trips every once in a while which gets annoying fast. i feel sorry for randy
Her tests are impossible even if u take perfect notes. One of her multiple choice questions on the exam had letters a-g impossible to do well when the teacher wants you to fail.
Saying a professor wants you to fail is completely bogus; that just means you are looking for someone to blame other than yourself for your class performance. Manaka makes you do work--get over it. Her tests are hard but she makes herself available to help students. Also, her 25 extra credit points are more than generous.
Dr.Manaka is one of the best teachers I've had here at Temple. She is always willing to help, gives LOTS of extra credit, and is available outside of class as well as the TA's. SHE WANTS TO HELP YOU, NOT FAIL YOU! Interesting class, and very good real life examples. Tests are hard, but if you study and participate you will be fine!
I disliked her at first, she seemed extremely anal and rigid in her requirements for class, but she grew on me, and the class is interesting and helpful towards real-life knowledge... may seem hard at first, but just DO the hw, GO to class, and study your class NOTES very closely and you should be cool
if you cant handle a large amount of workload, you shouldnt take this class. but this teacher is very helpful and will do anything to help you pass the class. if you go to class everyday, take notes during lecture, go to her office for help with topics you dont know, then you never have to study for this class. great teacher but she is tough
No good
great teacher, easy to talk to, you respect her she respects you take notes, do the homework, go to class and getting an A is a breeze ... just do the work and your good
Dr. Manaka will make a man out of you. The class is not easy but it is definetely managable if you go to class and study. I managed to bring my grade from a C to an A (a lot of extra credit).
one of my favorite professors of temple. made me study really hard and i ended up doing very well. very helpful when you go to office for help. be prepared to do lots of work and studying for tests. outside of the classroom, she is really down to earth and easy to get along with.
She'll make you work, but she is without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. I took the class because she taught it.
I dont' know why everyone complains about her, her tests were straight foreward, and the notes were clear. There were only a handful of HW's and she gave them to us weeks in advance, yes attendance was mandatory but if you went to all the classes you got extra credit, it didn't even take off of your grade, just go to class and you shoulf get an A
Best professor I ever had. Makes you work a lot, but the outcome is the knowledge that you will use in the future. Very clear lectures. a lot of reading but no textbook.
Certainly not an easy professor but she is actually not as bad as she seems. She teaches everything pretty well and is helpful when needed, the main problem is how strict she is regarding attendance and other policies while letting her TA's run the class like its first grade.
Don't take her if you have the option. She should be a high school teacher. So many rules, she has no respect for students, and playing favorits. All the examples she gives are in regard to her personal life...ME ME ME.
Dr. Manaka is one of the best professors in the school. Her notes, lectures, and the readings are all clear, concise and direct to the point. If you're planning to major in RMI or would like to obtin a deep understanding of RMI take her. Not a lot of work, just read and follow her notes. Bonus points are given as well, so the odds are for you.
Manaka is definately a very knowledgeable, interesting lecturer. That being said she will make you go to every single class and if you're 1 minute late you are marked absent and have to sit in the back of the room (no joke) the same goes if you are leaving early. She would be one of the best teachers if her rules werent so ridiculous.
Yes she takes attendance and yes she marks you late. She also gives 40+ points of extra credit. (plus factor in there are 400 points total for the class)She is strict and does utilize personal examples, but you'll learn a lot and she explains concepts well.
She is the strictest professir I have ever had. Attendence is mandatory and if you are a minute late you are marked absent. Be prepared to take notes the entire time. Her examples are helpful and her tests aren't to bad, the Risk Department sucks. And if you get caught talking in class she will stop everything to yell at you. She is crazy!
25 page sylibus is all i have to say
One of the best professors at Temple. Class is mandatory but you get 20+ points on overall grade for attending. Material is quite interesting. If you take notes, do well on exams and participate you should get an A. Very nice lady when you get to know her. Tough but fair.
Dr. Manaka is one of the best professors I've had so far at Temple. She presents the material clearly, lets you know exactly what is expected. Would definitely take her again.
SHE SHE SHE SHE SHE!!!! IS TERRIBLE. I got a decent grade but it was painful.
VERY STRICT, at first i really hated her, but then i did decent on the exams, and the class became more interesting. there are alot of notes, and if u just reread the notes for exams, u should be able to get a B or better easily.
I learned A LOT in this class. She really knows what she is talking about and if there is something she is unsure of, she will find out for you. Yes she has a lot of guidelines, and yes she is strict when it comes to grading the homework, but I thought it was worth it!! Take her if you want to actually learn something in RMI.
she knows whta she's talking about but could give students a break, very hard.
She is very strict about maintaining order in her classroom. If your cell phone goes off in class, she will stop class and will single you out. She can sometimes be intimidating. The first half of the class is harder as she tries to get ahead. The second half was a little easier. If you can keep pace with her in taking notes, you should do well.
She was the best professor I had at temple. An inspiration to me, and she gave me a possible job opportunity. Phone available on the weekends (use it).
Dedicated to her students, and passionate about healthcare. She's tough, but always fair and encouraging.
She is the worst teacher i have ever had. She is horrible and the class is horrible. do not take her she is crazy.
She knows her stuff, but she is just a terrible teacher. She forgets that "kids" are acutally adults paying her salary. Skip the homework - you'll likely lose 60% of the points on formatting. If you're running late, don't bother, you're already absent. And everything single sided? Come on, green up. You can't see the board bc her ego is too big.
She is VERY passionate about health care and economics, if you are not - I suggest not taking this class. It is a lot of work: homework almost every week and it can take you up to 6, 7 hours to complete. But do the homework, it will surely help you're grade in the end. If you take this class be prepared to work! Not an easy class.
Great Professor! Learned a ton in her course and her lectures are informative and intertaining. Her tests are difficult, but she does give extra credit and attendence points
She is a great professor. I did think it is too much discipline at the beginning. But she has a right to structure her class that way. Dr. Manaka is extremely intelligent, and she does care that the students learn. Plus, once I understood what is expected of me, getting an "A" was not that difficult.
DR. MANAKA IS ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSORS AT TEMPLE. THE NOTES THAT WE SPEND HOURS OF TIME WRITING ARE USELESS FOR HER DIFFICULT EXAMS. SHE TEST YOU AS IF YOUR IN A GRAD CLASS, AND NOT AN INTRO COURSE. HER EXAMS ARE NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD, MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS HAVE MULTIPLE ANSWERS. THE MATERIAL IS SIMPLE BUT SHE MAKES IT HARD. IT'S AN OPINIONAT
She's very strict at first, but once you get used to her style, you'll definitely learn to like her. You actually learn in the class, because of all the relevant assignments she gives. Knows her stuff. I highly recommend her, even if she seems brusque at first.
Horrible! Never again will I take her.
Dr. Manaka obviously did not go to school to be a teacher. She lacks the ability to get her points across and teach during lectures, which leads to you not understanding her exam questions. Avoid her if possible.
Professor Manaka is one of the best teachers that I've had at Temple University. She is very helpful when it comes to office hours and assignments. All you have to do is read the book and apply the concepts to real life scenarios. This course was cake. I barely studied for the first exam and got an 84. Easy GPA gain if you pay attention in class.
She is one of the best teachers I've had at Temple. Risk is a hard class and you do have to show up for class and study, but if you do that it's easy. She is a wonderful teacher and will always explain if you have trouble understanding. Her class made me consider changing my major to Risk.
Great professor. She creates an atmosphere in which all students can participate and ask questions. Tests are hard, but just study the notes thoroughly and you'll be fine.
I don't know what Dr. Manaka these people are talking about, because the Dr. Manaka I had was rude, and curt towards students. She does not know how to teach, and exams are not straight forward. Also her classroom rules makes you feel as though your in a 1st grade class. If you have money and time to waste then take her! If not find someone else.
Had her for a SMR1 Risk Management. Dr. Manaka is an AMAZING teacher! She comes off a mean and strict at first but it's for your benefit! She gives a lot of real life examples which helps you remember material. TAKE NOTES, STUDY THEM and you should do fine!
Dr Manaka knows what she's talking about. She explains everything very well, you just have to make sure that you study for her tests/quizzes. The hardest part of her class were her hws (they usually help me, but hurt me in her class). I'm an avg student, and got a C in her 1st test & B in 2nd & 3rd. She's strict, but a good professor.
There's a bunch of hws (hard), 3 tests (not cumulative), 2-3 quizzes. There's an incentive for showing up to class every day (you can miss 2 classes & still get the 20 points extra credit). Make sure you STUDY your notes (write down EVERYTHING she says & writes). She's very strict, but it makes the class flow better. One of my favorite professors.
I'd recommend taking Manaka. The class is difficult, but not impossible by any means. She was very helpful. The exams aren't bad, but the quizzes and homework are graded difficultly.
Hard professor but forces you to actually learn the material. She is very passionate about the subject matter. The classroom rules make you feel like you are in middle school. She does not use PowerPoint and you have to handwrite tons of notes. Homeworks are long and difficult. The exams consist of tricky multiple choice questions/short answer.
No matter who you take risk with, it will be a difficult class. None of the sections use powerpoint so you have to take rigorous notes in class. Manaka's tests are slightly easier than others, and she tries very hard to make the class interesting. If you pay attention in class, the tests will be very manageable. Do all the HW, it's worth a lot
Dr. Manaka is the best teacher I have had while at Temple University. While the work she assigns may be difficult, she has 3 TAs in addition to herself with office hours. If you fail this class, it is because you did not prepare. Dr. Manaka also manages to keep the class interesting with her stories about her past as a nurse.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! She makes dry, boring, and hard to understand material fun and relevant. Homework assignments are tricky and hard to get full points. Exams are not that bad as long as you study and know the material.
Dr. Manaka is a great Professor. She is tough but will make sure you will know the material pretty well once you pass the class. The class is a Capstone class so there is a lot of work but she break it down well enough for you to succeed. She has so much connections with potential employers so I would take her and definitely try to do my best!
Manaka is one of the best teachers I've had at Temple. She used to be a nurse and then got her PHD in some sort of healthcare economics so she is unbelievably knowledgable. This capstone was a difficult class and the paper almost brought me to tears but you won't fail if you work hard and she will help you. You'll learn a ton but will work for it
Manaka has a very intense personality. She has a certain way she wants things done but she is very clear. Go to every class, take notes and watch the videos she posts online and you will do well. The homeworks and quizzes more than prepare you for the exams. RMI2101 is a tough class but Manaka makes it very possible to get a good grade.
The material is fairly tough. Needs a lot of hard work. But Manaka does a terrible job at explaining the content. All examples come from her nurse background. While it may be relevant in heath care, it does little for most business students. Makes you feel like in 1st grade, very strict. In Office hours she is very rude and unhelpful.
Risk is a challenging course no matter who you take. Manaka is the BEST professor to have, trust me..I had friends in other classes. She is very nice, go to her office hours! Explain your situation and she will be honest and very helpful. LOVED HER!
good teacher, Lots of very time consuming homework and grades them strict. Pay attention in class and you will do fine. Gives extra credit for attendance which helps.
Not student-oriented. At all. Overly strict, reminiscent of Professor Umbridge. Several times I have lost test or homework points as a result of her cursory grading, gaining them back only if I confronted her face to face. Cruel and picky, she does not cover material in class and is reluctant to help students.
She's very specific about what she wants in her homework and she is very strict about electronics in her class but otherwise she is one of the best professors i had. She gives examples to help you better understand the material. She made everything clear and as long as you show up for class, take notes, and pay attention you will pass.
All RMI 2101 classes are run with the same strictness so don't let that deter you. The type of questions she asks on the quizzes and homework literally the same type of questions she'll put on the tests so make sure you take the homework seriously. I know that a lot of people utilize her office hours so definitely go to them if you need extra help.
Honestly I don't understand all of the bad reviews so I am compelled to write one. Professor Manaka was probably the best professor that I've had at Temple. Yes, there is a decent bit of homework and you have to study, but she is an incredibly good lecturer who is always striving for the best for her students and department. Best option there is.
I had taken this class at 8am. That for me was tough and you can not be late or you will sit in another area in the class. She is extremely precise and the department of RISK makes her make it that way. Expect homework and she is a HARD grader. Her quizzes are simple. She is an awesome teacher who really wants to help her students.
If you don't do well it's because you didn't put the hours into studying everything (that's right). The Risk Dept. has high expectations across the board. Barb makes you UNDERSTAND IT the best. The rest is up to you. Beware of homework. That's what killed my grade (harder than exams).
Manaka is an amazing professor, she's one of the only rmi professors that offers in class exercises that really make you understand the material. Expect homework every week. Pay attention in class and STUDY and you will pass!
Dr. Manaka's one of the few professors who truly cares. Gives you every opportunity to pass with an A. Tough homework but easy tests. Has in depth videos about every lesson that are incredibly helpful and significantly reduce book use
probably the best professor in the risk department as far as helping the students understand the material. shes also very kind. however, she could afford some leniency when it comes to her policy for being in class exactly at 8 AM or risk losing credit. also- no bathroom breaks? seriously?
shes the best professor at Temple for sure. Difficult class, but she gives real life examples and in class exercises to ensure you know what you're doing. Homework is lengthy, but take her loved her!
Dr. Manaka is an incredible professor. If you hated her/her class it's b/c you weren't willing to put in any effort and it's your fault . it's a difficult class in general, she will explain things that make it understandable. She is more than happy to help if you go to office hours. You MUST be dedicated to this class no matter who you take it w/
Horrible Professor. Wouldn't take her again is it came along with a Master's degree.
Best professor in the Risk program. If you have anything bad to say, its bc you're a bad student and don't put in the effort. Attend class. Do your homework. Participate in discussions. Hand assignments in on time. Don't be afraid to ask questions. She goes above and beyond for students who try their best and are motivated. Great human overall.
She gets distracted very easily, to the point where someone getting up to go to the bathroom like throws her whole world out of alignment. Make sure everything is right, make sure your formatting is correct and that you explain your answer but also naturally make it fit in the assignment. Its just a terrible class get the C and get out
Manama is extremely strict. 30 seconds late and you are late and so is your homework. She's not very relatable or reasonable. BUT, she made me enjoy RM and loved her lectures. The homework prepped us so well for exams. She knows so much about the field and has her moments of being funny and caring. If you have to take risk take her. It's worth it.
Honestly, I thought I was gonna hate this class and Dr. Manaka. I ended up loving the class and enjoyed her as a professor because of the structured environment she created. She makes it hard not to pay attention and I think that was incredibly helpful. This class isn't easy, but if you participate and get to know Dr. Manaka, she is 100% worth it.
In the beginning, it was clear she had no idea what she was doing, but as the class went along she caught her stride. Do well on the homework assignments because they will make or break your grade. She is a tough grader on homework but learn from what you did wrong on the homework because chances are it will be on the exam.
Very strict but she cares a lot about her students. Homework is graded but it prepares you for the exams. The material is challenging but is very do-able and getting an A isn't impossible. Come to class on time, take good notes, don't rush through the homework and you will be good. Group projects take some time but aren't too hard. Extra credit
I'll be honest before coming to class the other reviews here scared me. But Prof Manaka is SO caring and cares about her students so much!! A lot of the class is just lecture and taking notes, but there are a lot of good discussions. You have two group projects but they are not that bad and she is super open to helping outside of class!
The lectures are boring. Feel like many concepts are very similar but worded slightly differently, and you would have to learn the names.
doesn't give out slides. rambles and doesn't teach. This is the lowest grade i have gotten at temple. better off taking someone else.
Very nice lady but seems well past her prime. She is not organized, is easily distracted and is also forgetful. She was probably a good teacher 10 years ago but should not be teaching an honors course. I did learn a good deal in the class but feel I did despite the teacher, not because of her. It felt like I taught myself with the book.
Take her!! Very easy class she grades kinda tough on the exams but there is so much extra credit that you will be fine. Make sure u do all the hw its easy points if u use ur notes. Exams are very similar to the hw so use ur hw to study. Everyone gets a 100% on the presentation.
