Despite being a little tough, she can be mello haha. Lots of reading and work but that's expected in this class. If anything, she will help you if you ask. She seems formal but she really is liberal. She's American, not English :P Make sure you read the book.
Prof. Mello is helpful, and approachable, but she teaches her classes like her students were still in high school: lots of trivial assignments, overly difficult exams, surprise calling on students (wouldn't students raise their hands if they had something to say?), and daily pop quizzes because she doesn't trust her ADULT students to do the reading
Prof. Mello is a little inconsistent with her expectations. Her tests are hard and there is a lot of memorization involved. She can improve her teaching techniques, but she is a really nice lady.
Nice but didn't engage the class.Shakespeare's so interesting and she could have done so much more than sit us in a circle. The only complaint I have is the fact that she assigns grad-level work for undergrads; Amy Braden (the other 363 prof) gives her students multiple choice tests..while I am glad I learned a lot,the workload is unfair!
Pretty good teacher. She does give quizzes on the text often so you have to do the reading. She is great at leading discussion, can be a little sensitive sometimes, but only because she is nice and cares. Recommend, but not strongly.
Not the hardest teacher, she just assigns a lot of what seems like busy work and pop quizzes. But she is really enthusiastic and helpful about the subject. Also, in order to make everyone participate in the discussion, she calls on people at random. As long as you do the readings, you'll be fine -- she isn't as hard as the other comments say.
Gives way to much work the last few weeks of class. Assigned a character analysis, skit and critical analysis research paper all in the last 3 weeks. On top of it all, we still had to take the final which is extremely difficult and makes you do a lot of memorizing. Avoid!
My favorite professor. If you are in college, you really shouldn't COMPLAIN ABOUT WORKLOAD! You are in college to be challenged, and I believe Professor Mello does a fantastic job in challenging her students to produce at their full potential. Lots of READING, WRITING (right up your alley, ENGLISH MAJORS!). Tests are simple enough.
Professor Mello is somewhat rude. Calls on students at random. Moves syllabus around too much. Class is easy until she makes a 7 page research paper, annotated bib, outline, & abstract due on the last day There is also a final. Other than that, class requires not too much reading and three written assignments with 2 moderate difficulty tests.
Barbara's "Easiness" rating should be much higher and I have no idea who could possibly think her exams are difficult. She does give a lot of busy type work, but it's very manageable. This was my first English class at the university level and I didn't get lower than an "A" on a single assignment. Read the plays, do analysis in the papers, profit.
For a beginning English class, Professor Mello was a mess. Shes a very sweet person, but her teaching skills arent too great. She was rarely prepared for class & would have students take over the class for a bit while she learned how to jump into teaching. Fairly easy, but not recommended!!
Ironically enough, Barbara Mello is anything but mellow. While enthusiastic about the material, she is often unprepared and usually frantic. Her lectures are uncomfortable and awkward. Calls on you at random, cherry-picks a quote, demands an explanation, and if your analysis is not exactly what she had in mind you are WRONG. Not recommended at all
Prof Mello is quite rude and condescending. She treats her students like they are in ninth grade. I also strongly feel she is a little off her rocker--she gave me a perfect score on a rough draft and then a C+ on the final copy. wtf. Randomly calls on students and if you have a disagreement, you are wrong and she is right. Do not recommend!!
She is nice person, but not a very good teacher all we did was read and do essays. she does believe that she is always right. i would look for someone else if taking english 100
Very difficult and has high expectations for her English 100 students. I honestly believe no one received an A. Slow to grade papers. Always thinks she is right. I would avoid
My one warning to all of you: Whether you want straight A's or just a pass, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I was a straight A student and got a B simply because she did not agree with my views (and English is my favorite subject). Biased, condescending, and gives A's only to her favorites. High expectations for a basic English class. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Very strict. Absences and tardies not recommended. She is enthusiastic about material but still tough. Make sure to really read. Pop quizzes are very in depth. Little homework, just a lot of reading. Calls on students randomly in discussion. If your interpretation isn't what she thought, you're wrong.
She's rude and patronizing, not to mention her interpretation is the only right one. If you like feeling stupid and being treated like a high school student take this class. I've never disliked a professor more
Is very very opinionated so whatever you say won't matter. NEVER returns emails and is pretty rude. She's nice when you talk to her separately and she will let you turn in assignments late if you just talk to her but in front of the entire class, she's pretty mean. Don't take this class if you want an A. You need to be an exceptional writer.
Not a very easy class because she either liked your idea/opinion or straight up didn't. I received a C on most papers but somehow managed to get a B for the class.
She expects a lot out of your writing. Tries to be as helpful as she can in crafting your essays with you in class but sometimes doesn't quite help out as you'd like her to. Some of the prompts were also very hard to write on; she even had to revise a prompt because it was pretty much impossible to write about.
She is not that bad, she tries to keep papers interesting, usually 3 to 5 page papers, sometimes lets class out early, but is sometimes rude and sarcastic.
Professor Mello is very one-minded. Her prompts are not clear. As many can agree she is very rude and sarcastic. I passed with an A by doing well on my essays. Receiving an A in this course was very easy to achieve, tolerating Mello's attitude on the other hand was difficult. Mello loves to treat students like freshmen in high school.
Easy class. She expects you to behave and work like college students. Very helpful with essays. Made class fun with open discussions. Always replied to emails and understanding if you have to miss class. I really enjoyed the class. If I could I would take a class with her again. Great professor.
She requires you read a bunch of assignments and take notes on them. Oftenly, you will have to go type stuff and submit it to her and she grades very hard.
She is one of the best, my favorite teacher. She does push her students but that is only because she knows your true capability before you do yourself. She likes feedback from her students so do not feel afraid to speak up all opinions matter to her. If you ever feel stuck on something just ask her for help she will be more than happy to.
Dr. Mello is a good teacher. She pushes you to think for yourself and does a good job of it. I've taken ideas from that class with me for sure. There are a lot of little homework assignments and a couple big papers but what do you expect from an english class. She's helpful and really does care about the individual student. Sweet lady.
She really wants her students to succeed so if you are stuck on a topic in class do not scared to ask her! She loves class discussions and she gives homework assignments so make sure to do them! She is a lovey professor, strict but extremely passionate at what she does. Would definitely take her again. PS! Don't forget to take the text to class!
She's a good and eccentric teacher, she wants you to pass and will do anything in her power to help you pass. Sometimes its hard to understand her and the way she teaches but she helps you become a better writer with in-class and out-of-class essays. She gives positive and beneficial feedback.
Don't recommend this professor for English majors, no helpful feedback on essays, she's disorganize, unclear of expectations, takes long to returned graded papers, though interesting topics to write about, gets annoyed/insulted when you challenge her opinion, does not remind you when to bring textbook, overall ok teacher, easy class, no much hw
While a nice person, she is not a helpful teacher. She constantly shuts students down if their opinion differs or conflicts with hers, assigns too many readings then glosses over them, and tests on things that are too specific or not discussed. I had high hopes for this class, but was incredibly disappointed.
While very passionate and enthusiastic about the subject, Professor Mello allowed her irritation and attitude to get the better of her. She was very unclear with her instructions and was not receptive to constructive criticism about how to help us students with the class. It was a very awkward and confusing overall.
She rolls her eyes, argues with you in class if your interpretation is different than hers, and generally treats her students disrespectfully. Although there's a reading schedule she does not follow it. Asks strange, irrelevant questions on exams and is unfamiliar with the content she teaches. Very hostile and impatient.
Avoid Barbara Mello at all costs. Absolutely dreaded going to this class. Miserable. She enjoys to pick on people randomly and ask the most vague confusing questions. I'm normally one to raise my hand and answer questions but not in her class, if your opinion isn't identical to hers, forget about it. Needs to step up her technology knowledge asap.
It was not very lit. Helps if she knows your name, aka try and agree with her even if you don't because at least that way she'll know you exist. And then maybe, maybe you will survive.
A lot of reading, but all the reading is very interesting and enjoyable. Be prepared for a bit of writing. Participation and attendance are mandatory if you want to pass. Overall, it's a fun class, and Dr. Mello is a great and passionate professor. Show up and you'll learn a lot while enjoying open discussions. I definitely recommend her class.
Great professor, really knows her stuff and is very detailed in depth.
Although she is very passionate about her readings as a person its difficult to learn from. She constantly calls on random people and ignores those who don't agree with her opinions. She expresses her attitude with no shame and rolls her eyes at everything. It was a constant drag to go to her mandatory attendance class.
Lessons to be learn, make sure to have your thinking cap on. Take her class if you want a challenge, not an easy grade.
Class is very discussion heavy. If you dont speak in class but you turn in good work, she expects you to participate and will call on you more often(prepare urself!). She likes it when you bring up fresh ideas into the discussion! Work consists of 4/5 crit. response papers(short) and 2 exams, beware of surprise quizzes! (use schmoop/sprknts)
Take if you want to learn with your education. Great instructor!!!
AVOID! If you do not agree with her, you are on her 'bad grade' list. Constantly rolls her eyes, calls on random people, no clear lectures. Her syllabus doesn't exist. No problem belittling you in class. Doesn't tell you what's she looking for in anything. Grades everything the last month before finals so you don't know what to improve on.
Tough grader (you can get an A, but you need to try--God forbid). If you're slouching in the corner on your phone, she's going to call on you. You have only yourself to blame. She's knowledgable and passionate, but impatient, unorganized, and a slow grader. Caused me great anxiety and hated going to class, but I'm a better writer thanks to her.
If you don't get a good grade in this class, it is definitely you own doing. Dr. Mello is genuine, captivating and has a brilliant mind that inspires deep analyzation of what is being discussed. You should really have proper University student etiquette in this class (in any class). She is to be respected and admired. Really enjoyed her class.
My favorite class this semester. She is truly mesmerizing! There should be more instructors like her, really passionate and insightful. She has a unique sense to her and is fascinating. Pay attention to the lectures instead of your social life and you should be ok. She is also very distinguished and I strived to impress her, not sure if successful
Could understand why people don't like her, she expects good work from all her students. One of my favorite professors so far. Only take if you want to learn.
Not sure why she doesn't have a higher rating. If you do not participate it is because you are not paying attention. Her lessons are very solid and intense. Her class is definitely not for the close minded and lazy. Do not expect anything easy out of her course. She is great and is far from having a wasted brain. She is fabulous.
It was so hard sitting through this class simply because I got the biggest crush on her during the semester. She is very smart and teaches the class well. I recommend her class but not for those who feel entitled and sensitive. She was awesome . I really couldn't stop staring at her.
Indeed the greatest, the course was really enjoyable
Absolutely the greatest Professor I've had at CSULB. I loved this class and am definitely recommending it. Get your moneys worth. You will definitely learn.
Learned so much from this class, very insightful.
This was one of the best courses and instructors I have ever taken. Definitely Recommend this class, especially English majors.
What a terrific class and what an amazing professor. The course requires a lot of reading and analytical thought. Papers are a few and schedule is very flexible. She wants you to learn what the course requires her to teach, don't take it personal. Go in with an open mind, she listens to your point of view as long as you support it.
Dr. Mello helped me focus, organize my thoughts and improved my writing. Her lessons are deep so it is necessary to pay attention. Really, really enjoyed her class. Sad that it is over. Only class I enjoyed this Fall semester.
Definitely one of those professors that will impact your education. She may be a little on the no nonesense side, but otherwise is a great instructor.
I don't know what the other people are thinking this is my least favorite faculty memeber at csulb. Didn't learn anything and most of the class was her arguing with students.
The worst professor I have ever experienced! She never grades anything so you will have no idea what your grade is or how to improve for the next assignment. There were definitely people she hated and had a vendetta against. Only her view is the correct one so be sure to agree with her! Unorganized and overall not worth it.
Fabulous professor and definitely one of my favorites. Encourages students to their best and really wants you to support you logic. Great instructor, you will learn.
The class was pretty chill. Professor Mello is very cool, pretty awesome I guess. The discussion is very heavy day to day and she stays on point. Easy grade if you pay attention and back up your points. If you don't, then she is not the instructor for you.
She loves to argue with students and gets very irritated with students who do one thing wrong. She will laugh at you if you ask a question(which is rude) and picks on students. She will give you lots of attitude and loves to be 'right'. The work is not hard but she will make it difficult to not get frustrated and want to leave.
Simply outstanding! Loved this class and am looking forward to taking professor Mello for another course as well. Love her teaching techniques and love the way she pushes you to back up your points of view. Best professor at csulb.
Mind shaping experience. Top instructor at CSULB, class is very discussion heavy. She is a great instructor however, she gives amazing lectures. Pay attention and if you think differently, support your facts.
Awesome lady. This class really helped me develop a great thesis and instructed me to be a better writer. I highly recommend this class to everyone. She will help you become a better writer.
What a gem. She is very nice and very helpful. I am learning a lot from her.
The class can be a little stressful but it's just because you're learning. Great class!
Loved Mello! She brings great connections to readings and the discussions are interesting when students participate. She likes to hear feedback from the class so participation is important. She'll get frustrated when students are too quiet. Just keep up with readings and you'll be fine. But I loved her and am hoping to take another class with her!
She seem's very strict at first! She's so passionate about her teaching. My favorite part about this class were the discussions, we have intense conversations but very meaningful. Some of the essay topics we covered were kind of narrow, but it's doable.
She's nice but the workload is hefty and her expectations are demanding. It's definitely hard to get an A in this class if you don't dedicate yourself to it. She does offer a few extra credit opportunities though. She is there to help you and she pushes you so that you may improve, but it's to a level that's comparable with real literary scholars.
One of the most generous and helpful professors at CSULB. She is very knowledgeable and it shows. Her lectures are discussion heavy and very interesting.
EXCELLENT professor, does a fantastic job of being an amazing and very effective. Her discussions are very engaging and enticing, you have to read and keep up with the work in order to get it. It is about learning the material not take things defensive. The lessons are very relevant and relatable to everyday life. She learns with you as well.
What a great professor. I will miss this class terribly. She is very fun and knowledgeable, and the course is very deep discussion heavy. One of the only classes I have enjoyed so far at CSULB. I would love taking another class with her.
Great experience, glad I took this class with this professor. Very enlightening.
Dr. Mello is a great teacher with enthusiasm for the subject. She deeply cares for her students. Respect is a two way street for her, she respects your opinion when you respect hers. I loved the class and hope to take her again. She often gets off topic to discuss events relevant to the readings and the implications of the literature.
This professor creates a welcoming learning environment for all students. She is a good listener and respects ideas that are fully supported. The class was fun and learned a lot from it. I am definitely looking forward to another course with Dr. Mello. Wish other professors were like her. She is very unique.
Truly an uplifting and mesmerizing professor. The class would not have been as amazing as it was with another instructor. She is truly passionate and charismatic in her teaching, life changer and savior and she probably doesn't even realize it. Look forward to another class or workshop with her.
I was glad to have taken this class with this professor. She is very passionate about her work and it shows. Her lectures affected me deeply and in a positive way. One of the best instructors at Cal State LB.
Terrific. Learned a lot. Great experience.
DO NOT underestimate this class. Mello means well and is accommodating with your final grade if you've proved yourself responsible but is a pretty tough grader overall. She also took a ridiculously long time (up to a month) to return graded papers. Not an overwhelming workload, just hard to evaluate where you stand along the way!
Awesome professor and amazing lecture. Had a lot of fun in this class.
One of the most amazing and intriguing minds at CSULB. Wonderful instructor and very caring. Learned a lot from her this semester.
One of the greatest intellects you will ever meet.
Best English literary at CSULB. Makes you think and really analyze the readings. She very inspirational and wants every student to succeed so pay very close attention to her amazing lectures.
Professor Mello's grading criteria is not specified at all, it seems that as long as SHE agrees with your opinion thats all that matters. She has a tendency of calling people out whenever there's a lack of participation so be prepared to be placed on the spot. Overall the class was not enjoyable seeing as 12 people would show up of a class of 23.
One of the most brilliant minds I have ever met. Truly value her lessons, she has a lot to teach and in the most creative way. Loved the input she requires from all her discussions and helps with writing. Definitely one of the greatest professors I have ever had.
Fun class, lots of discussion. Amazing professor.
Dr. Mello is an excellent Professor. She re-awoken my curiosity in literature. Very knowledgeable and inspiring. The campus needs a whole lot more caring instructors like her. I appreciated the lectures and the challenge.
Dr. Mello has got to be the best professor at this campus. The schedule changes but that doesnt really matter because she is consistently clear. I love her class and plan on taken more courses with her as an instructor.
First impressions are important, they are what make you pass or fail in this course. If you participate in the first few classes and she likes you, you will pass. If not, then good luck trying to get a C.
Really enjoyed this class. Discussions help a lot with learning the lessons. Hope to take this instructor again.
Awesome professor. Learned a lot from her.
She really tries to have all her students understand the text. Very passionate and clear about her lectures. Learned so much in this class and improved my writing.
Amazing professor. Is passionate in teaching the course and teaches it well. I love to take her again for any course
You will have to participate to prove you are paying attention in her class. Which is good because her lessons are very informational towards the material we are learning.
This professor is on her way to becoming one of my biggest academic legacies. She gives great lectures and has great in class discussions. It can get confusing at times but its just your mind working.
Pros: KInd, funny, respectful. Jokes around with her students sometimes. Knows her stuff. Treats students with food sometimes. Pushes back due dates a lot. Cons: Read the texts. If you don't, you're screwed for the midterm/quiz/final. Btw, midterm and final exam are both essays. If you suck at writing, go to the Writing Resource Lab for help.
I was very nervous coming into this class. I heard both good things and bad things about this professor. But taking her, I can now only say great things about her. She is the most reasonable and most sensible woman. Her lectures are amazing and she made the made think. I learned a lot in her class.
Get ready to learn by discussing ideas and interpretations. This class was not only good but the Professor was amazing. I loved this course and would definitely recommend and take this Professor again.
Dr. Mello has a wonderful personality and is highly respected by students. However she grades assignments really slowly. I did not know whether or not if I needed improvements on essay writings until she graded our midterm and gave us a feedback. In addition we did so much in class discussions that I feel like I didn't learn anything about writing.
She brushes through content super fast, yet expects you to know all the material for the midterm and final. Didn't get back papers on time, so I had no idea how she grades or what I needed to improve on with my writing. First impressions are everything and that ultimately affects the way that she grades you throughout the semester.
Wasnt the worst professor but not the best. However she makes you think critical about questions she asks which was fine. But she will call on you even if you dont raise your hand so I recommend participating. Yes she does argue if she doesnt agree with your answer which kinda bugged me. Grades arent posted online so go to her office hours.
Great professor . Gave me a b in her class . Expects a lot of writing from her students . Be willing to study hard , write, and ask fo help when needed and you will do fine . Attendance is a must in order to pass the course so dont skip. She expects a lot from her students and you will learn to be a better writer in her classes . I learned alot.
Mello would just make us get into groups every single class session. It became really repetitive and boring. She takes forever to grade papers and your grade in the class in uncertain most of the time. She did not really teach but she was a semi-nice lady. My advice is to go to her office hours and speak up in class.
Professor Mello is a very kind and fun professor. Although she grades late and doesnt post much on beachboard. She is willing to help students become better writers during her office hours.
Professor Mello is a nice lady but unorganized. She'll forget due dates, forget to go over a reading and start a new one. She also cancels class a few times. Read everything that is assigned or you'll be lost in class. Take notes on what you discuss in class. She doesn't tell you to but it's important for the final. Midterm and final were essays.
She never posts grades on beach board. Doesn't give feedback on essays either. The good thing is that she is flexible with due dates and offers many extra credit opportunities. Most of the class time you're put in groups to analyze the reading. Participation is important or she'll call out students.
Dr. Mello is knowledgeable about the material she teaches, and good at leading close reading discussions. She challenges students to really go in depth with the material. Unfortunately, she does not post feedback on essays on BeachBoard, but is available during office hours to meet with students. Overall a good professor that I learned a lot from.
Her class was difficult, although she was a generous grader. At least I think so, I never got any grades or feedback back but I did receive an A. She also calls on random people to ask for their thoughts on the topic, so she wants to see that you are paying attention. Her class was online and she made everyone have their cameras on and dress nice.
If you want a semester of unorganized, absurd frustration then take this professor.
She does not post grades on Beach Board. Very unorganized, kept switching due dates and changing the syllabus. Get's upset very easily. When she does grade she is very tough. Her quizzes aren't about the text.
First day in, she said "I only accept two days absent regardless of your circumstance and no I will not fill you in ask someone around you. Also, I do not accept tardiness (it was a 9am class) so I consider 5 minutes late an absence." She was 30 min late for the midterm and made everyone feel dumb for asking legit Q's. If you enjoy headaches ...
No clear standards, very dependent on students to peer review each other's papers instead of actually teaching/giving proper feedback. Try to steer clear from.
Very unorganized w/ no clear standards or syllabus. Never knew when things were due or even how to do certain assignments. Calls out students constantly. She's rude and makes you feel dumb for asking questions. I've learned nothing in this class. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs--save yourself from unnecessary stress/anxiety.
I was very disappointed in taking this class. No clear instruction and we immediately strayed away from the syllabus after the first week of classes. She has high expectations for little to no instruction or clear due dates. The textbook was used probably two times max. I would not recommend taking her.
She was rude, disorganized, and didn't grade anything until two months in. Severely lacks technical education and insulted people for not having proper networks/cameras. We had a few assignments (four 1 pagers/a midterm/final paper) with no instruction and her lectures did not aid us in our papers. She cares about her field, but not her students.
never in my college years have i taken a professor like mello. unorganized, confused all of the time with brainfarts throughout the entire class, and just super messy. we didnt take a midterm, or had many assignments. i learned NOTHING from this class and till this day i know nothing of what my assignment grades and final paper grade is. beware.
I've taken online courses every semester of my academic career & this is by far the worst class I've ever taken. Everything's a mess, nothing's ever graded. Syllabus? Nonexistent. She's also super rude. Slaps on a final grade w/o giving much feedback on assignments. As someone stated below, she only cares about her field, not her students. BEWARE.
Ok, Mello is nice and sort of understanding outside of class but in class she is so disorganized and cares more about her pride in knowing the subject than understanding her students. She always changed her words, was all over the place, and very rude and snarky to students. Thankfully I passed this class because I never want to take her again.
She's a sweet lady, but if it's online, don't take this class. She doesn't know how to use zoom at all, really, and it gets in the way of her class. She has a tendency to tangent and she's very disorganized. She changes her class schedule a lot. She gives lots of papers and pop quizzes, and her readings are long. She loves breakout rooms.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. No schedule, assignments changed on a whim, paper lengths changed whenever she feels like it. snappy and rude. she has no business teaching.
Extremely rude/borderline aggressive toward students. No syllabus/plan for semester, makes it up as she goes. Assigns papers last minute, then changes lengths/req's. No feedback given for grades. Not to mention she's emotionally a mess. High expectations, tough grader, but doesn't teacher tolerate questions from students. WORST prof. i've ever had.
She does not have a syllabus nor a schedule. Gets upset when students ask questions or ask for further explanations about her schedule. Assignments, papers, and projects were so random and it became so stressful because instructions were always so unclear. She has favorites and if you're not one of them then good luck!
I am so disappointed in the outcome of my grade. I did everything possible to succeed: go to office hours, participate, do extra credit, and I still got a B. She favors guys a lot more than girls so beware. Tough grader, yet she never grades anything haha. Idk just try your hardest ig. this class was my first B so I'm pretty upset.
This is hard because at her core, Prof. Mello is a good person. However, this just cannot excuse the complete lack of structure and subsequent constant anxiety that I experienced throughout the entire semester. No real feedback, just a grade slapped on at the end. Assignments added and dropped, her attitude often snappy. Not the best.
She is a complex person with a good heart. I think she, like many professors, creates judgments on what she sees from students in class or their work. If she sees that you are actively engaging in discussion and or showing that you generally are engaged with the text in some form, then she will have a positive bias towards you. SO, doing that helps
We're so behind in class and she goes off topic a lot during lectures. It's November and she's barely finishing up on grading. My peers received low scores on their papers apparently bc she didn't agree with their argument. Shouldn't she be grading based on evidence? Basically, I've been teaching myself... do yourself a favor and save your money.
She's a kind and caring teacher, however, she was barely there. Class would get canceled on a whim or she would end it early. We barely learned anything and she ramble about different subjects. The only reason I did well was because my class had a discord server where we talked often. The midterm and final contained material we did not learn.
The worst professor ever I tell y'all. Her mind is hopping all over the place. Doesn't teach well, I understood NOTHING. I'm usually great at writing, but I ended up with. a C in this class because her instructions are always unclear OR she's looking for something else. Would always be late to class or miss it. Very demanding. WORST. EVER.
Worst professor I've had. She is rude, blames students for things that are her fault, and shows clear favoritism towards certain students. There are students that try hard and have well done papers/projects and she gives them worse grades than students she clearly favors that don't try hard and clearly did last minute work.
Mello isn't great- she's disorganized and can be a little harsh at times, especially re. technology. But she grows on you, and despite her eccentricities seems to genuinely care about her students and subject. Beware- the Norton textbooks are expensive, but honestly any hard copy of the plays works just as well.
It's been over a semester since I have taken a class with Prof Mello, and I can say with my whole chest that she is the worst, most unprofessional teacher I have ever had. Completely disorganized and all over the place, never graded anything on time, would cancel classes after the class should have already started, and overall, taught me nothing.
When Dr. Mello lectures she is absolutely brilliant. It's clear she's knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches, but the constant changing of the syllabus as well as unannounced canceled classes definitely made it difficult to focus on her positives. That being said, she was always caring and willing to work with people. Would take again.
Great professor. However, she does seem scattered at times but when you listen to her lectures she really does know Shakespeare and the era he lived. She makes class interesting.
Prof. Mello was one of the most knowledgable professors I've had in my college experience. Her depth of knowledge made her lectures nothing short of fascinating. That said, she has health problems that often caused class to be cancelled, grading to slow down, and the course schedule to suddenly change. Don't expect great organization.
This was my second time taking a class with Professor Mello, and while some of her usual problems were still apparent -- particularly when it came to grading papers and sticking to our original syllabus -- she managed to cram an entire semester's worth of Shakespeare into four weeks. It's clear she's passionate about what she teaches us.
This class was a literal nightmare for me. She cancelled class often and was very disorganized which made the class very difficult to keep up. We only had a few essays that she assigned and she never once put our grades up on BeachBoard, so I literally had no idea what my grade was in this class until she posted it for final grades.
Her directions are unclear and she is pretty forgetful. Struggles to use technology and we had to convince her to let us use laptops/tablets in class. During discussions she would shut down some students ideas if the idea wasn't super connected to what she believed about the reading. Information on BB is only sometimes actually up, frustrating.
Dr. Mello is very knowledgeable about British literature and history, and the amount of historical context she provided really helped change my mind about Brit lit, as someone who prefers American literary movements. She leads great discussions. However, technology is not her strong suit and class was cancelled more than once.
The semester just began. It's my 3rd week in her class and this is a 3:45:00 class. She is a nice lady & is excited about the subject. But, is difficult because she is disorganized; hates technology; and cancels classes last minute! Today, she canceled class but the notice was last-minute. Books are expensive. E-book cheaper, but hates technology.
Extremely rude, unclear grading criteria, disorganized. Stay away.
Avoid her. Cancelled class 3 times very last minute. The class is long yet she talks about two lines the whole class time. She is rude when you ask questions. She constantly picks students to answer questions she knows you don't know. Textbooks are required yet you won't read many texts and are expensive, she's against technology.
Professor Mello is known to cancel class on a whim. She also gets annoyed if you try to ask for help. Just go to the University Writing Center, they'll help way more than she does. She does know what she's talking about half the time. It just sucks that she's not that great of a teacher.
she will be aggressive and call you out for just being
avoiding her at all costs, she hate technology in her class so e-book is a no no. very rude, she literally called out someone mid class because she doesnt like their presentations.
Very disorganized and is not specific with expectations of an assignment. It is the end of the semester and there is not grade up to date, only graded one assignment. Doesn't give clear instructions and hates technology so canvas is not set up properly for submission.
It is the week of the final and only one assignment has been graded. Throughout the semester she cancelled class multiple times. Some discussions in class were interesting but overall but that's really the only positive thing I can say about this class. I would advise anyone considering taking this professor to pick another if it is possible.
pros: cons:Technologically inept, Aggressive and rude (reprimanded me for yawning), Disorganized & unclear, Cancels class last minute, Slow grader (Many students report not having grades from start of semester to end of semester), Multiple hand written assignments, Unable to say but (RMP Guideline no.2), RMP Guideline no.2 will effect your grading.
Best professor ever. Anyone who says otherwise is just entitled. She is calling a very good way. Kept me interested and on my toes.
SHES EVIL - argues and directly calls out students work during class - if you miss a day she takes 5% off your final grade - grades nothing - afraid of technology - does not know how to work canvas and barely posts anything - very unclear on directions/requirements - calls on people randomly SAVE ME, TRIED TO DROP
Professor is extremely strict, often snapped at multiple students for things like yawning, slouching, having a phone out, or even asking questions. She never answers emails, it took me 5 emails to get a response. Once she left the class waiting for her for about 30 minutes, she never showed up or emailed. She doesn't grade much, and cancels class.
The educational climate has changed and this professor is definitely not for the weak hearted. Understanding the new generation is not use to hard or heavy work, this professor is strictly based and focused on academia. If you are in class to learn, you will definitely learn. If you want an easy grade, take another class.
If you take this class get ready to be scolded if you miss deadlines or are unprepared for lectures. Professor Mello can be rough on students, however her class itself isn't very hard. I'm not a great writer and still got an A. I would recommend taking someone else ,but if you choose to take her come to class prepared and you will be fine.
There are 3 essays, 2 in class essays and a Final paper. She does not have a set assignment schedule. On one hand this is great because her grading is flexible if you submit something late. On the other hand you don't know what's coming up if you don't show up to class often. Overall just attend all classes and participate and you will be fine.
Rude & will argue with students.Very disorganized & hates technology. Canceled class a lot for no reason. Unclear with instructions, rubrics, due dates & takes forever to grade, it's the end of the semester and she's graded 1 out of 6 or so assignments. If you aren't the biggest fan of writing I strongly recommend you choose a different professor.
Reading some of the reviews completely shocks me. What has happened to education? Especially with the newer (younger generations) students. Seems as the value of a good education is crumbling. What happened to learning from someone who knows more than you? This Professor is amazing and I would definitely recommend it her.
Professor Mello's class can be a mixed bag. While she knows the material, her disorganization and lack of clear feedback can make it challenging. The workload is manageable, but you'll need to stay on top of things and leverage resources like the Writing Center. Unstuck Study AI was a lifesaver for essay prep.
Online class, but she doesn't know how to use technology well. She has graded 1 assignment as of mid November, so you won't know how her grading is until y. I don't recommend this class unless you are already amazing and very skilled writing.
very tech illiterate and hard to follow half of the time, do not take her ENGL 100B class.
She's a very hard grader, offers feedback but wont help you. Lots of back to back papers making it extremely stressful. Topics were interesting and fun. Grading wise not the best. Offers extra credit though which helps. Maybe she's better in person but online its very easy to get lost and confused and is never clear on what she expects out of you.
On winter break and she has graded 1 essay. Also, she doesn't know how to use online things despite being an online only class.
Very unorganized and never grades.
DO NOT TAKE HER SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE! I ended the class with a B but it could have easily been an A if she would have graded the final essay she gave. You will never know your grade in the class because she takes so long to grade and when she started to grade assignments on canvas it showed I had an A but on my transcript I have a B.
lwk she was alr but like she would get mad all the time constantly belittled student she always wants to have questions but answers then in a rude manner she horrible grader, takes forever to revive feedback and grades i didn't find out what i was at until i saw my transcript, she don't can a grade book and doesn't but due dates on assigment
If you had to take an English 100 class, I would strongly advise you to take another professor. She is very passive aggressive with her students. She would not grade any assignments until the end of the semester. I didn't know my final grade until I got my transcript. She is not very organized in her canvas and doesn't have due dates.
so awful pls do yourself the favor and dont take her!!!!!!! she never grades and gets mad over little things.
Doesn't respond to your messages within 24 hours that syllabus be capping I sent her back to back messages and wouldn't respond at all instantly dropped
she was such a good and dun teacher, i will miss her. Rest in peace Professor Mello.
Good professor. I will miss you
I can't believe she is gone. She is definitely the most memorable and favorite professor I have ever had. I am also glad she referred to me as one of her favorite students. May she rest in peace. My world is emptier now.
Stay away!
I mean, she was nice at times, but the class was very disorganized. She doesn't know anything about technology and would always cancel class at the last second.
She seriously was the sweetest professor and anyone that has anything bad to say probably never went to class or payed attention. The class consisted of 3 essays but she gave you PLENTY of time to complete. If you try and aren't lazy you will do well.
Barbara Mello was a force to be reckoned with. She was passionate, caring, and an overall fire cracker of a human being. She took the time to help me in her office and always made it clear that she wanted to help me understand literature not just for a passing grade but in appreciation for the art. I graduated in 2017&never forgot her. Rest well.
