Barbara Merk is super sweet and her class is easy. She uses attendance through Tophat and the class is based off 4 exams and a final. The tests are pretty easy and based around the lectures. You'd have to put effort in to fail.
She's so so so nice. She rarely gives out any assignments and it's VERY hard to fail a test. Her tests, exams, quizzes, and homework and based off of the powerpoint slides she provides. She's a funny professor too! 10/10 RECOMMEND!!
This was a hard class for me, and Prof. Merk knows her stuff but could've been better at communicating and engaging w/ us. You have to go to lectures or you won't understand what's going on. Most grades come from tests & exams. Very hard to access her outside of class, and that includes responding to emails.
First off, i had the biggest crush on her. Shes got one of the nicest voices i've heard. Genetics is a super hard class but it seems everyone else dislikes her.. Really knowledgeable professor and always seemed nice Individually... Teaching style is super laid back when she does lecture. However, it is a very strangely/(flawed?) designed course
Merk is really laidback and cool, but her class is like too easy. I feel like i haven't really learned much and that it's just high school bio all over again. However, if you don't show up to class you need to study the power points she puts online or you wont do that well. 4 exams plus a final and no quizzes and we had 5 assignments.
She's a great teacher, and explains the material well enough to comprehend. She is also approachable so if you need help, Ask! I took her for Genetics, which was not an easy class, you will need to put in the time!
Really great prof. I had her for her first semester at VCU and it took her a bit to get adjusted, but once she did class ran smoothly. Did not follow her own syllabus/schedule for the semester and kinda did whatever she wanted. Used TopHat and had a daily attendance code which does help your overall grade. Offered extra credit occasionally.
This semester was her first here at VCU. She was WAY too nice. People would talk during her lectures and I knew she heard them too. I know she hated when people packed up early, so please be respectful! Her tests are pretty straightforward. Read her powerpoints and you'll be fine.
Great professor! She's really funny and really sweet. Just know the powerpoints and do the extra credit and you should be fine.
This was her first semester teaching at VCU so it took her awhile to get adjusted to teaching a large lecture class. However, she managed to adjust. The class is very easy. Study the lecture slides and you will pass the tests. She gives extra credit and online assignments. Overall, good teacher but she's kind of boring to listen to.
She is the sweetest professor I've had, and she is my favorite. I hardly attended her lectures, but when I did, she was so nice and interactive. Attendance isn't mandatory because she posts all of her powerpoints online. Your final grade is determined mostly by 5 exams. There is credit for TopHat and assignments, but they aren't worth much.
Professor was new to the university so I understand, however, we barely did any other work other than taking notes. All we did for assignments were tests and exams. I wish she was more helpful and would reach out to the students
She has changed her class!! There never was a final for her class but as of Spring 2018, there is a cumulative final! She is very nice and gives good powerpoint notes, kinda like Cell Bio with Dr. Smith. Her tests are fair with everything she covered, but they are very long and can be tedious with the short answers. Takes attendance with Tophat
Very easy and straightforward class, but that might've been because I took bio in high school and I remembered a lot. Missing class wasn't too big of a deal, you just missed out on tophat attendance/questions and some examples/explanations not on the powerpoints, which are posted online. Test questions are exactly info given in the powerpoints.
Her lectures are clear and easy to follow, which is great since it's genetics!! Easy tests :) You can get extra credit if you go to review sessions. She is nice, caring, great personality. There are some homework assignment for every test roughly (nothing crazy)
she is nice; however, i find her style of teaching is boring. all multiple choice test and you have to know your stuffs. overall she is ok. she teach cell bio too but i recommended Smith for cell bio.
Her lectures were mad boring to me but that's because I took BIOL300 last semester and remembered most of it, and this class was mostly just a review for that class with some math thrown in. She seems pretty nice though and she can be funny. She reads DIRECTLY off the powerpoint and the figures seem to confuse her- this can get SO boring SO fast
She is very sweet. She is very quiet so her voice can tend to get lost in lecture. You can tell she has a genuine interest in biology. Studying is definitely recommended.
I had recently given a very generous review for this class but have definitely changed my mind. You have to live, eat, and breathe genetics to get an A in this class. I would study 2 weeks before the exams and never got above a 55. This is a very tedious and difficult class so don't pair it up with another difficult class that'll take up your time
Genetic is really hard course in general! Must study ahead. 1 or 2 days to prepare for exam will get you F. NO JOKE! Genetic is no joke! Study hard and go to the SI session which helps aloooot!! If you study hard you will get the grade you deserve or closer to the grade you wanted! Everything on the exam comes from the powerpoint!
Dr. Merk is a great professor and teaches the course rather well, but the review sessions are vital. Break the ice with a few classmates to make it interesting and gain a deep understanding/passion for genetics. Once you know the basics go back and cover the examples. Read and understand every small detail of the PP's until you can't get it wrong
She did 4 exams PLUS a final! I didn't find lectures very useful but her preceptors explained everything in their sessions and even gave hints! Go to all the sessions you can for extra credit and come to class for the TopHat (participation only) and she tells you what to focus on!!! I messed up 1 exam and still got an A in the class!
avoid this professor if you can. she makes genetics miserable with her horrible teaching that confuses everyone. her questions are often worded so badly that even she doesn't know what shes talking about. choose another professor if you can!!!
I usually never go on this site or write reviews but I was curious to see what people had to say about this professor. Everyone is right. Professor Merk is bad at teaching and she structures her class in way that makes it difficult to succeed. Be cautious!
Professor Merk cares about people doing well in genetics. She is straight forward about what is on the test. If you do the HW (and understand it) the short answer questions on the exam are not a problem. Test questions are from the power points so the book is not necessary (but not a bad addition). Questions are asked in class for attendance points
Her tests are difficult becuase she isnt always sure what she wants when you ask her about the test question. TA's drive the class, they grade everything and you need to go to preceptor sessions to really learn the material. Dr Merk just reads the slides, the TAs actually try to make you understand it. She strives for 70 class average
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. She cannot teach and only cares to keep her job so she can get her salary. DO NOT TAkE HER!
Dr. Merk is one of the nicest professors here at VCU. She accommodates & is really helpful if you actually have a conversation with her since she wants her students to do well. She held personal sessions for our class to go over things that most students didn't understand which no professor Ive ever had has done. Go to Preceptors & SI sessions!
Dr. Merk is the most caring professor I have had. She really works hard to make sure all her students understand the material. Merk took time out of her own day to hold sessions for students that weren't doing as well in the class. She provided lots of extra credit as well. Make sure you show up to every class, her lectures are pretty interesting!
I found the subject of genetics to be very interesting, however her lectures kind of put you to sleep. She is nice and funny though and makes an effort to be available for students outside of class. You definitely have to work for that A, her tests are no joke. But all in all it's not so bad. Don't be afraid to take her, just be prepared.
She is a really caring professor. She went over exam grades during lectures and reminded people of their options to do better. She also provided extra review sessions for students that were failing. She gives a lot of extra credit. She reads off the lecture but its not her thats boring, its the material. Genetics in general is very difficult
Extra credit, plus Top Hat and homework are basically free points. Tests are tough but made MUCH easier by attending Preceptor Sessions or SI. Material on tests is directly from lectures, so just attending class is the best way to do well. Practicing problems is essential, especially for the free response section on tests.
Love this pro-fessor of Cell Bio, She talked about the laws of thermodynamics and how cells create heat. Its pretty hot bruh ;)
Avoid her at all costs! She does not know what she is talking about. I wonder how she got to be a genetics professor. Her exams are hard and she is rude. She mistakenly took points off my exam and blamed me for it. 5 exams and she has a weird grading scale. Take someone else and learn better. I get PTSD whenever I think about her class.
This was my second attempt at Genetics, and the HW assignments were very helpful for knowing exactly what to study for the short answer part of the exams. Multiple choice questions came from easy to follow ppts. Nail the participation points by attending class, and do the HW correctly. These two grades will help you if you struggle with exams.
Taking cell bio with her was one of my best choices. She's very clear and concise with what will be on the test and teaches you exactly that. It was a bit difficult in the sense that the materials used were from another professor but she adapted the tests to how she taught it. She's very nice and caring! The tests were straightforward as well.
Don't take her for genetics. I want to save the future students, learn from my mistake (the first few chapters were easy but her exam arnt) She may have a good score here but they are not the majority in the 250+ students (look at the dislike ratios I wish I did) either take the class in a com college or in the summer with the other prof (easier)
She is an amazing teacher that focuses on you understanding the content rather than just pounding you with work to do and stressing you out. Really cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches.
Here exams are REALLY HARD. Most people I know who are retaking the course are the ones with A's haha. If you have test anxiety you will FAIL #cortisol. Make sure you go look at your exams bc the T.A's grade it & I've always caught mistakes. avoid her for genetics
If you don't need to take genetics, DONT DO IT. Dr. Merk seems to boast about how hard her class is and how genetics is the hardest bio, which is not true in most places. The material itself is not hard, but her exams are purposefully confusing. Merk does not care about her students, and takes pride in the fact that half her class is failing.
Her tests are brutal. She writes questions with the intent to trick you to get the answer wrong. Her tests are free response. Quizzes are tough as well. Just save your GPA and money and don't take her. She does take pride on being a tough professor and she can come off as rude.
Dr. Merk is a very good Biol 151 teacher. She is very straightforward in lecture do there is no way that you will get confused. Even the hardest topics became easy when she explains it because she uses very well examples (She usually uses the cookbook example for gene). Her tests? Easy A, mostly same content from her ppt. take her, you won't regret
Dr. Merk is a great teacher. 3-4 HW assignments for the whole semester. What is on the test is what she teaches in her PowerPoints (provided). Not too intensive but is still a BIO class.
This class is garbage, it's just repackaged cell bio and Evo, except the exams are set up to fail you with trick questions/technicalities/etc. The material isn't even that difficult but the quiz and exam questions are super non-intuitive. TopHat makes up a weirdly large percentage of your grade so go to lecture!! SI marathons helped a little.
4 tests, 3 homeworks, 2 quizzes and tophat: tests are 55%, all other points are 45%. The first three tests were very straightforward but if you take her, study for test 4 because its a tough one. Shes a good professor, explains material and I definitely learned more about BIO151 after taking her. As a whole, you should take her for BIO151
this was my second time taking bio 151 and I absolutely loved Dr. Merk! She's really passionate about what she's teaching and I would 100% recommend taking her!!!
Here exams are REALLY HARD
Don't take her, the last test was really hard
If you have the chance to take Merk for Biology 151 DO IT!! Hands down, the best bio 151 teacher at vcu! Her first three tests aren't that hard, ALL you have to do is review the powerpoint (you don't even need to go to class as long as you do tophat), no textbook reading is needed. She's also really sweet and will go over the test with you as well.
I LOVE MERK! Most stress free Bio class you'll take at VCU. If you want to take a class that's informative and an EASY A, take this one. (Last exam was kind of hard so beware)
Dr. Merk is an amazing professor. She explains everything so well. She uses Top Hat for attendance and questions throughout the lecture. She posts all her PowerPoints to Blackboard and her study guides are exactly like the tests. This class is very lecture heavy, but she does slip in some funny stories are jokes.
Prof Merk is a great prof. Her lectures are so specific and she explains things in detail. Even if you don't go to class, she posts her powerpoints online. There is one homework grade between tests and its basically just a study guide. The study guides mirror the tests. Her exams are so easy, you don't need a textbook just review the powerpoints.
Idk why the other reviews say Merk purposely is hard. Her exams are exactly like the lecture and homework. I have never met a prof that cares so much about their students doing well, she offers many opportunities for extra credit and is such a sweetheart! It is an upper level course so don't expect an easy A just go to class and study the slides!
I had her for bio 152. Her lectures are powerpoint-based, which are all on blackboard so you don't even need to show up to class. As long as you study the powerpoint word-for-word, you'll do fine in the exams.
decent until we switched to online. merk was behind by about 4 chapters all semester and took the online switch as a means for her to "catch up" by uploading up to 2.5 hours of lecture material per chapter - not to mention 2 full hours after the semester already ended. she has been the least understanding professor in regards to mental health.
She is literally the most unorganized and disrespectful professor that I have ever had at VCU. She waits until the last minute to post the homework but still expects you to get it done on time. She doesn't accept late work but expects you to be understanding when she posts the homework late. Do not take her if you can.
I'd say she is the best prof compared to the other bio profs, her exams are just like her lectures and powerpoint but you must study. She doesn't give out a lot of hw and when she does, they're easy and helpful. Although the class is kinda difficult (but I think it's because biology is hard for me), she strives for you to pass.
I LOVED Dr. Merk. Although before classes switched online she was a little behind and unorganized but she still kept up with grades and was available through email. Test are just like the powerpoints and she gives a lot of extra credit. Make sure to study and go over her powerpoints
She read directly off the slides and many of her slides had repeated material on it. I only went to class for the tophat questions. I wrote out the powerpoints and did the study guides outside of class and did well on the tests.
One of the best and easiest professors for biology. She grades attendance but you don't have to show up to do well. Study her powerpoints and you'll do fine on the tests which are very easy. She gives some HW but it's not very taxing at all-- if anything it is a helpful study guide. She's very nice and seems understanding. Take her if you can.
Merk is an awesome professor, her lectures are very thorough and explain all of the topics well. Exams are really fair and come only from what she's mentioned in lectures, there's never any surprises. Homework grades are completion and are definitely a huge grade-booster. She's also adjusted really well to online teaching and is just a great prof.
Such a sweet and accommodating professor, she really cares about how we do in her class, especially given the current circumstances! I really enjoyed her class and her lectures were straightforward and exams were very fair.
TAKE MERK for Genetics. Especially in this online, asynchronous format, the class was extremely easy. You just have lecture videos to watch, and homework is just for completion. The exams themselves were straightforward, you really just needed to watch the lectures, take good notes, and look at the homework keys. She's also very understanding!
I really enjoyed taking this class with Merk. She is really sweet and her lectures are interesting and really easy to understand. You can tell she enjoys teaching this subject and she does a good job doing so. For each unit, there is homework and a quiz and they are easy. After a few units, there is a test.
Take Merk for an easy A.
Lots of quizzes, tests, and homework, but it all felt reasonable. The lectures were also long, but she made it easy to understand. I feel that the time given for lectures and assignments was adequate for the most part, so it was just enough work. You definitely have to do all of the work to pass though. She is also very nice!
Easy grader if you're looking to get a gen ed out the way or actually learn bio, both work. Her lectures are interesting and caring. The homework are the study guides for quizzes and tests. If you do them right, you can pass any quiz or test. She's very reasonable.
She is such a sweetheart and super understanding. Her lectures are a lot but the concepts are pretty easy to understand and the exams basically follow her lectures and homeworks. You have to do all the assignments and stay on top of your stuff to do well in this class and the exams.
A Wonderful professor. She is very intelligent. Delivers material in such a great way will make you understand the topic easily! If you ask her a question, she will answer it back thoroughly and does not loop around the question and leaves you more confused, something many professors do! She is very very clear! Absolutely recommend her for genetics
She is the most wonderful professor at VCU! I love her. Her lectures are amazing and it's really easy to understand what she is saying. She made me interested in Genetics. She is really smart and sweet. Homeworks are easy. Exams are very clear and straightforward. I heard many say this class is hard, but it is easy. I would strongly recommend her!
Had this class asynchronously. Didnt watch a single lecture (prerecorded) as she moves too slow for my taste so I just read the powerpoints that she posts. Weekly homework. Dedicated about 30mins-1hr per week to this class and came out with an A. Unbelievably easy.
Merk's genetics class is relatively easy and straightforward. Just take notes or read over the powerpoints. The tests are made up of free response, drawing questions, MC, and matching. Not too bad at all. The HW is just for completion and provide a great buffer. She also offers EC for attending SI and preceptor sessions.
Dr. Merk is a fine professor however this course is not well transitioned from in person to online. She was late updating grading so it was never accurate what your grade was until last minute when it was too late to withdraw. You are also required to draw on tests which is difficult to upload onto canvas. Would take again but in person. Not online
By far the worst professor at VCU. I was doing poorly in class because of my underlying health condition and personal problems hence I requested an incomplete grade but she declined. Her exams are set to assure you fail. She takes pride in students failing her class. An awful human being!
I take BIOL101 online async, but Professor Merk is my prof, and she is SO nice. Really good lectures, goes into a lot of detail in her videos and makes sure that we get all of the information that we need to be able to complete the assignments. Sends out reminders for due dates and sticks to the syllabus! Super amazing class, so happy I got her.
I took BIOL101 online asynchronous, and it wasn't overly difficult. The only thing was that there was a lot of lecture notes and homework to complete. It often felt like a lot of work. But Professor Merk was nice and efficient at responding to emails though.
Worst professor to take for Genetics. Might as well not take Genetics if she is the only one being offered. Her lectures are not understandable and she is one of the worst bio teachers I have taken. She does not respond to emails and she does not care for her students at all. Worst mistake taking her as a professor.
I hope she gets fired she literally doesnt care about her online students and is barely any help. If its that hard to do both online and in person then let someone else who actually cares about students do online.
Great professor, uploaded homework assignments and lecture videos on time. Homework and quiz every week but super easy if you watch her lecture videos. Easy A type of class.
I took Dr. Merk for 151 and now 310 and she is a pretty decent professor. She is clear about what is expected and her lectures are very straight forward, though, they can be a little boring at times. Her tests have a multiple choice section and a free response section, both are pretty easy if you watched the lecture videos. Average 300 level class.
The only thing that surprised me was that there is no drop exams nor quiz. Otherwise the course is good and she uses powerpoints and the tests come straight forward from the power point. There is critical thinking question which made you think before answering.
Professor Merk is an amazing professor. Her lectures are really clear and her presentations are very useful. You don't have to attend the lectures to understand the material. She does have a couple random quizzes but she's good about reminding. If you aren't good at bio, I 100% recommend her. She simplifies everything down so it's very clear.
Dr.Merk is great. This class was not bad, I honestly learned a a lot. Out of all the bio professors I would definitely recommend her.
overall okay. if you attend class, do the hw and study a little youll do fine
Her voice is the sole reason I did not go to class. I would listen to her lecture videos to tell me fall asleep. Exams were all written response with a sprinkle of multiple choice. Harsh grader and surprised she doesn't drop any exams which puts you already in a bad spot after exam 1. Did not make this class interesting whatsoever; lots of math.
impossible to reach outside of class. doesnt answer emails. shell say shell do something, post hw answers or change due dates, but waits until the VERY LAST MINUTE to actually do it. shes always late to class, including test days, so you start around 5-10 minutes late but only have the 50 min time period. every exam is on a monday. Id avoid.
does not respond to emails. exams are mostly free response with a few multiple choice. Lecture was not interesting & she spoke in a monotone voice and also seemed like she didn't know the material herself. Comes to class late and even on exam days. Grades consist of homework, 3 exams and final exam. The final exam is cumulative and not optional.
Dr. Merk is quirky, but her lectures are pretty straightforward. The class is pretty simple if you attend lectures, do homework, and go to preceptor/SI sessions. Her tests are straightforward and come from the lecture. Genetics involves math, so be prepared (it's simple algebra). She is not great at responding to emails and is late pretty often.
She's pretty straightforward and clear. She basically tells you what's going to be on the exams. Just do the homework and make sure you get the concepts down instead of memorizing stuff. Not an easy class though so make sure you put in the effort. There's some math and tests are mostly free response type questions.
Attendance wasn't even mandatory for lecture, she mainly goes over unit powerpoints in depth though so def go if you're struggling. Easy homework that help you study for quizzes and tests. Pretty easy online qizzes that lead up to exams. the only reason i got a B was bc I didn't ever study, if you study weekly material you should do well !
Awesome.
She was amazing! Her quizzes and homework were online and exams were multiple choice. Our second exam and final had extra credit on it and sometimes gave points back. Test questions are straightforward and attendance was optional--just mandatory on test days. Offers a generous amount of extra credit and rounded up my final grade from a B+ to an A!
She was very good at lecture, if you go to class, you will do well. She was understanding of missed assignments and drops some grades.
If you go to class you don't really need to study, test where straightforward. There was no final- only 4 tests and a few mini at home quizzes. There is one decent sized homework per unit but you get plenty of time to complete. Class was easy and she was super nice
I loved Dr. Merk. She was slightly hard to access outside of class and somewhat unorganized with the homework and quizzes, but she's a really good professor. I found her lectures to be extremely helpful and I mainly relied on them to study. Going to the SI sessions is really helpful too. Tests are straightforward and she tells you what to study.
Professor Merk is a fairly good professor and has great lectures, but is pretty disorganized. However, I appreciate how the class can to vote on some deadlines. That being said, deadlines are pretty fluid and for those opting to take the class online, you may not be able to get those announcements made in class. My advice, don't miss the lectures.
She's one of the nicest professors I have met. Her lectures are all online so you don't have to attend but you might not do very well if you don't prepare well for the tests. The materials aren't too difficult per say but they require a decent amount of studying. Tough class to take with a heavy load so be aware.
Professor Merk is very sweet and caring. The quizzes are easy and she only gives a few homework assignments. Her lectures are engaging (lowkey relaxing too) and she cares a lot about what she's teaching. Study for the tests, go to SI sessions, and go to class as much as you can. Extra credit opportunities and she curves the tests.
I love Dr. Merk, she is so nice and makes the lectures easy to understand. Homework is very straightforward, but the test can be difficult.
Do the weekly hw, quiz, attend both SI, and preceptor sessions which will help you prepare for all her exams and its extra credit! She does have a final that is worth 20%. Professor Merk is helpful and her class is not very difficult if you understand all the concepts by continuously reviewing. I recommend taking her for genetics.
Dr. Merk is the best professor in the Biology department. She is super nice and the lectures are actually interesting. The tests can be hard but if you understand the homework/quizzes you'll be fine. There is plenty of extra credit from attending SI/preceptor sessions. She was kind enough to give a retake on one exam question too.
Professor Merk was an overall good professor. Be prepared for long lectures and long exams. Homework and quizzes are easy but exams are difficult.
Dr. Merk is truly one of the best Bio professors ever! She is so understanding and kind! She even gave us an opportunity to redo a question from a test to help boost our grades! It's an easy class, just show up to lecture, do ALL the HW's, attend SI/Preceptor sessions, and you'll get an A no doubt!
Dr. Merk is seriously the best genetics professor you can take here. Genetics isn't necessarily the easiest class, but her tests are super fair and are exactly what she teaches you. If you study well and pay attention in class, you're sure to get an A. Weekly hw graded on completion + quizzes on canvas (2 attempts)
She is a nice person, but no matter how much you study/feel confident, exams will prove you wrong. Basically your whole grade's off 4 exams and the exams make no sense+barely seem like they relate to what she teaches in class. Lectures are so boring. Hard for no reason, she makes it more difficult than it needs to be. I recommend someone else.
Merk is a very sweet Professor but her lectures do tend to get boring. The tests make up most of your grade so make sure you do well on them. Attendance isn't mandatory but I suggest that if you don't go to class definitely watch her lecture videos and take notes. Her homework prepares you for exams so go over those before exams too.
I love Dr mere she is so understanding ad down to earth your grade is made up of 4 exams so you really need to study and she give out a lot of extra credit. lectures are boring but that to be expected.
She is really good at explaining necessary topics and opening up to discussion during class. She is really passionate about teaching biology and I'm not gonna lie her voice was soothing and I fell asleep a couple of times. Take notes online and the exams are not open note.
I loved Dr. Merk! One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. 4 exams, open note AND take home quizzes almost every Monday, and a few homeworks that were only graded on participation. Very soft spoken and her lectures are easy to follow along with. She posts all her PowerPoints on canvas. Tests aren't too difficult but you should still study!
A really good professor. Just show up to the class and listen to the lectures and you will do great. Know that this course is EXAM HEAVY and your grade will reflect how you do on the 4 exams. Ultimately, if you study and turn in your work you'll do good. Don't take exams lightly you might think you know all the info but you don't.. extra study.
Kind professor. Optional attendance. However, I took advantage of this and it caught up with me. Please attend and take notes. In-person exams. Easy homework. Not many assignments so you must do good on exams. She is very sweet and passionate.
I enjoyed Dr. Merk and her teachings during this semester. I took BIO101 and she covered interesting topics about the biology of our world. I would definitely take another of her classes.
Dr. Merk is a caring and knowledgeable professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would recommend attending her lectures because she explains the material in an easy to understand manner. The tests are worth 70% of your grade, so be sure to really study the lecture notes and attend SI/preceptor sessions for extra credit.
Merk is super sweet and very passionate about what she teaches! The slideshows used to guide her lectures is exactly what is on exams. The slideshows are very detailed, but make the course easier to understand. She explains each slide thoroughly and breaks it down extremely well. Monthly exams are worth most of your grade, so study study study!
Prof Merk is amazing. She loves this class and her students. There's hw (completion grade), quizzes (open note), and tests. Attend SI/Preceptor sessions and get extra credit. You don't have to attend lectures but Prof Merk explains things well and does examples that are exactly like exam questions. Not a hard class, just study and have fun.
Professor Merk is a good professor. Her exams are very hard and it is not easy to get an A on. I recommend you take her for BIO 101 and BIO 310 but not for BIO 151.
Dr. Merk is an incredibly sweet, knowledgeable, and transparent professor. She makes an effort to be accessible and respectful of her students even in a lecture setting.
Dr. Merk is one of the the most considerate and thoughtful professors I've had. You can tell she wants you to succeed and all her tests are designed based on the powerpoints in class. The final exam is very easy and is just cumulative with all the tests combined. I would definitely recommend her.
You only have 1 hw per unit, 3 tests, a handful of quizzes, and the final exam. Easy course, easy to follow lectures. She spends extra time on genetic aspects due to being the genetics professor. Everything is on the powerpoint slides.
She teaches really and explains things really clearly. She also responded to my emails quickly.
Professor Merk is one of my favorite professors! All the materials are on the slides, she does really well explaining the concepts in class as well. The homework is very easy, and her exams aren't bad as long as you study beforehand and make sure you're really familiar with the topics. Overall she is a 10/10 professor and I highly recommend her.
I had Professor Merk for BIO101. She uses slides for her lectures and it is very clear and to the point. She also post them in canvas for you to access during class. The exams were not hard. All you have to do is study beforehand and remember the topics. The quizzes are open book. 10/10 recommend!
She is the best bio professor at VCU!! She makes biology fun and easy to learn. All of the quizzes are open notes with the tests being based on only what she teaches. Not a difficult class at all as long as you put effort in. She gives multiple extra credit opportunities so do them and you'll do great. Take her if you have BIO 101!!!!
professor merk was so so sweet! her class was very easy and the exams are literally just everything written on the powerpoint. i will say the exams are the main weight of your grade so it's important that you study for them. other than that, it was a nice class and i'd definitely take her again if i had to redo bio 101
Dr. Merk is an amazing professor. She ensured that her lectures were interesting and thorough. It is clear that she knows what she is talking about and is willing to answer any questions. Exams are 60% of your grade, so make sure to study. However, the exams and quizzes are not bad as long as you go to class.
I don't really like biology, but Dr. Merk was so passionate about the subject and conservation that I was engaged the whole time. PLEASE don't be that person who packs up five minutes early, she deserves your attention. The tests aren't too bad, just study a bit. Dr. Merk is accommodating and loves answering questions in depth, so ask her!
She's nice but incredibly awkward. Super hard to understand what will be on exams. Exams are tricky unless u study daily. No real guidance I felt lost nothing to practice content with .
the professor is awkward but lovely, clearly cares about the subject. no official study guide, but the homework, notes, & TA ran study sessions will be very helpful! theres only 4 exams, 2 being the hardest, but as long as you do the notes & homework & study them you'll be fine.
Engaging lectures, though attendance is mandatory. Exams are the main focus, so studying is crucial. unstuck ai and ChatGPT proved helpful for test prep. Overall, a rewarding course with a caring professor.
Dr. Merk is very sweet. Four tests, a few homeworks per unit and a quiz or two. I am not a science person and didn't study/attend class. If I had I think it would have been easy to get a better grade. The tests are not too hard and she gives extra credit at the end of the semester. Apply yourself and you will do fine. Dr. Merk is great.
I went to every lecture so I did well because she'll tell you what's on the test. The tests are super easy as long as you STUDY. We have homework and quizzes but they're out of class, and you don't need to go to the lectures expect if it's an exam. Really easy! You should take her if you have to.
Sweetest professor I've ever had. She loves to talk about the things she teaches which can lead to long lectures with little progress in notes, but you will learn lots. She was EXTREMELY accommodating when it came to grades, even gave my class an extra quiz at the end of the semester to boost our grades. Easy class to pass if you do the work.
Awesome lectures! There's unit homework and quizzes occasionally. I find it fun to know many friends through this class as we do review sessions every week. The best way to success is using flashcards, which help your brain retain the information effectively. Other than that, Dr. Merk is chill.
I didn't have a hard time in Bio 101 as many others did. I would say just go to lectures and pay attention then you should know everything for the tests. Do the work on time and study them for the tests.
Dr. Merk just read off of the slides. She wasn't necessarily horrible, just very mediocre and did the bare minimum. Her class was very unengaging. Very easy, but boring.
Dr. Merk is super chill! She has very clear expectations about what you need to do on homework, quizzes, tests, etc that make it really easy to study and prepare. She is clearly passionate about Genetics and explains things in a clear way. I didn't have to put in a crazy amount of effort to get a good grade.
She is a really good professor; her lectures are kind of pointless because she reads directly off the slides, but the quizzes are taken at home, and the tests are literally what's on the slides. On the quiz, you will be fine if you study the notes and the quizzes. Make sure you attend class because attendance helps with your final grade!
She often reads off the slides but mentions many things that aren't on the slides that will end up on the test. Expect her to say that something won't be on the test, to find out while taking it that it was on the test. Showing up to class will greatly improve your grade, and she gives extra credit—quizzes online, HW every week. Expect to study.
When we started the semester, she said this class was the organic chemistry of biology... but, it really wasn't. It was very easy, and I mostly took notes on the videos she had on Canvas instead of going to class. Homework is straightforward, and so are the exams. If you feel lost, speak to her or go to an SI session; very helpful.
Dr Merk is Great Professor, you learn a lot in her class. Homework and exams are straightforward She is Super understandable and supportive. She is wonderful.
Extremely boring lectures, but useful slides, fair tests, and leagues better than any other bio101 prof
She's easygoing and approachable. The course isn't rigorous, and you'll do well as long as you complete your work on time and study for the exams. She's very accommodating and soft-spoken. At times, she goes into a bit too much detail during lectures, which can lead to slight changes in the schedule from what was originally listed in the syllabus.
I had Dr. Merk twice for BIO 101 and BIO 151. Please take her for BIO 310 and any other course. She really knows of how to be a professor and how to teach. She is really caring about her students more than the other genetics professor does. Her exams can be hard and challenging and she does not do tricky questions like the other professors do.
Ms.Merk is a great professor. She explains the topics extremely well. The tests align with the curriculum—lots of opportunities for extra credit. Be ready to be an active listener in class and take notes!
She is great, everything on the exams are on the slides presented in class. Lecture is a bit boring but fine. She will give online take home quizzes between 5-7 questions super easy.
Amazing professor, nice lecture and easy A class
She is such a sweet professor, very understanding and flexible. If you show up to class, do your work and study for the exams, it's a guarrented A. I love how her tests are straightforward and she gives extra credit. Great teacher, I definitely recommend :)
Take her, very easy class.
Genuinely such a sweet professor, she's pretty understanding so if anything's going on just talk to her. The tests match the content of the slides pretty well and professor merk does a really good job at explaining the content herself, go to class and do the homework, this was my gen ed but the way she taught it made me want to look into bio majors
This class was okay just bc bio it's not one of my strengths. I do wish that she would interact with the class more instead of just reading the slides. Quizzes are online and homework is straightforward. Study hard for exams bc sometimes info info on there might not be in the slides
Barbara was the best biology teacher I've had. Quizzes were online, lectures were concise but informative, and tests required thorough studying since unexpected topics appeared. She also offered extra credit, giving students a second chance when tests were challenging. After, lecture she allows anyone to come up to her and ask questions.
Very flexible with the syllabus and doesn't always follow what's scheduled but still very clear on what's on the exams. Encourages students to ask questions during and after lectures. Final is cumulative.
Dr. Merk wonderful! you are only quized on the slides shown in class. Attendance ismandatory, but if you go to 75% of the time, you get a 100 for attendance points, def take w merk. Quizzes every week, and there are extra credit ques on the exams as well
