She makes you do a lot of reading, but the course isn't extremely hard. Try to keep up on the readings though...although it's nearly impossible! Barbara is a nice lady who like to laugh a lot. She is very interested in history.
TONS of reading. No in-class assignment help, appointments must be made.
GREAT CLASS! barbara is a fun lady who loves history. 5 200 word precis's count as 50% of your final mark! fun class. notes are a little scattered (but they aren't needed)
Great teacher. Barbara loves history as it shows in her teachings. Expect to do a lot of reading though. Speak up in class and you'll do well.
Too much reading. Want's too much. Unclear about her Precis assignments.
Very helpful in creating and writing term papers. Also has a good sense of humour which perks things up when you're in upper level courses with a bit of stress.
Very stressful class trying to keep up with all the readings and assignments!!! Barbara is a very kind, supportive, and encouraging proffessor though. If you speak up in class, do all the assignment (and follow precise directions) you will get a good mark
Barbara is awesome! I took my first (and only) history class with her, she made it interesting and fun- if I had the opportunity to take many more I would for sure!! She rocks!!
she's really silly, laughs at her own jokes, which is cute. she really love history, although sometimes she is confusing because she goes back and forth on dates, not in cronilogical order.. but she's a good teacher, the tests are really fair if you study.
this was one of the worst history classes i have ever taken although she seemed nice enough as a person her teaching style however leaves much to be improved on.
Barbara is fun and makes the class more interesting and gets the students involved in what she does.
so boring...still don't understand how to write her precis...shes very boring and biased
Interesting lectures - Barbara adds little stories about historical characters that help make them seem more human. Precis assignments are a good way to learn how to look for key points in readins. Seems to care about students. A great instructor.
I took this class in summer for a requirement, and ended up really enjoying it! Her course is really interesting, and she's quite a nice person. If you get the hang of the precis assignments you'll be fine. I'm going to wait until she offers 102 again before I take it!
Barbara is awesome! Her annecdotes and use of pictures, films, etc, to get the point across are so perfect. You really learn something in her class, not the least of which is how to 'read' people better. You'll learn fascinating stories about famous people.
2nd Class I've had w/ Barbara. She's great, and manages to keep most lectures interesting. She knows her stuff really well and makse great use of primary source cartoons. Very approachable and a fair marker.
Barbara is a great prof! She is a very fair marker and very clear with her expectations. If you are willing to do the readings and assignments, you'll do great! The mid-term and final exam were not worth too much, which made them less stressful. I definately recommend her!
the lectures were interesting but the precis were worth too much and really a pain to write
She is the best history teacher ever. I love her Precis they are so much better than huge essays that other teachers give. I enjoyed this class and professor way more than the other history I took. I highly recommend her to anyone.
This was the most pedantic class, as well as instructor. She was biased towards some students and picked on others. She did not impress me at all.
Barbara is an excellent prof. She knows her material very well and is very clear in her lectures. Her reading summary pages were an excellent study tool and if you listen in class it is very easy to pick up on what she will be putting on the exam. Very helpful and approachable! Excellent, excellent course!
WOW, such a bore! She seems nice, but I think that she is is super hard. She expects a lot in this class, and provides NO learning materials that are helpful. NO pictures, nothing. She also love MAKING the students present..4 presentations each in this course, so look out. BORING BORING BORING.

not very engaging. The class was poorly poorly structured for learning the material. Too many irrelevant assignments, such as essay critiques and novel abstracts and not enough discussing the actual migration patterns that helped to develop canada. Barbara was also too vague in her discussions, which left the students unsure as to what she wanted
The Queen of History. A most gracious lady.
I have had this instructor for 2 classes, one 1st yr, one 4th year. She gives a huge amount of assignments, but she knows her stuff, and has interesting angles to examine from. Would love to take another of her classes. Would recomend her, but be prepared to work your butt off :)
The best prof at UCFV, (along with Scott Fast!) Her hist. research opened new paths for me and I'll always recommend her for any class you can take. A lot of work, and def. worth it.
Barbara was responsible for me changing direction in University. I enjoyed her class so much that I am now working towards my ext. minor in History. She has a good sence of humour and is extremely helpful if you ask. Her class marking was also fair and wasn't heavily reliant on tests. I will definetly take another class with her in the future!
Though the content of the class is dull, she somehow makes it bearable with her dry sense of humour. Not the most interesting class, but if you do the assignments you're bound to pass!
Barbara is a brilliant woman. She really knows what she's talking about. The class was boring but she taught me more about english and grammer than did my Eng 105 course. She is rewriting the Hist 101 textbook because she thinks it's boring- wonderful! She's also very helpful and accommidating.
Energetic, excited, and interesting teacher. The material isn't presented with much excitement in the books, but she spices it up on her own. Whether or not you're interested in history, I think you'll like her course(s).
excellent class be prepared to work and best if you do not miss a class Dr M is a classy lady and above the rest
I think she should become an english teacher. She teaches 100 level history like its a 300 level english course. I found her lectures hard to follow and boring and she has not been very helpful.
Really hard grader! Explains everything really clearly and covers all of the course material well. Her exams are hard and she grades hard, but fairly. Pay attention in class and do all the homework well and you shouldn't have any problems. Her lectures can be boring at times but usually they're pretty good. Overall great teacher!
She seems not very polite, She is very difficult to understand, even though if you work hard and do the best you can, also if you study your brains out, she still will not give you a break or even help the students. She is so boring. She is also a very taugh grader.
Be prepared to work hard in this class. Every week there are homework assignments, plus 2 additional presentations. she does let you redo one of your assigments, which is nice, because she is a very strict marker. the exams are only short answer and essay style.
Dr. Barbara Messamore, is a very difficilt professor. She makes everything so hard to understand, and hard to follow. Even though, I work as hard as I could, I still failed her class. If felt like a level 300/400 History class. I would not recommend taking her class. History was my major, but because of her I switched my major to Political Science.
Extremely hard marker when it comes to the precis, but the exams are really basic, as well as the fact that class participation leads to good marks.
An excellent Prof, who does not do lazy. Be prepared to work and you will be rewarded. Very approachable and helpful if you just show a bit of interest. Her precis make a pleasant change from term papers. I will definitely take another of her courses.
Messamore enjoys teaching. Smart. Good memory. Tough maker--fair. Helpful. Her outlines and expectations could me more clear. Needs to outline the big picture clearly so her lectures are easier to follow. She gives a lot of details. The textbook reading is not required to do well. Know her outlines and research events in them.
This prof is SO boring. Her lectures are unbearable! She is an unbelievably hard marker, and i would not recommend her to anyone.
I just loved this class. I took History 101 as a prerequisite for the TEP, but I quickly changed my mind and now I'm going to pursue a major in history. I realize she's not for everyone, but if you learn in a structured setting, and you're willing to get extra help, this class is for you.
One of the clearest and most articulate speakers I have ever listened to. I loved her sense of humour and the dead-simple weekly quizzes. But she is a very hard marker for a 101 class, and the textbook has way too much information for, again, a 101 class. Awful book, IMO, but Messamore is still a good teacher to have.
She is a great prof. who knows what she is talking about, but she is an unbelievably hard marker.... i was going to have history as a minor, but i'm seriously considering switching already, i've done two history courses and did great in them, but this one just makes me hate history all together.
I tried to do my very best and she was a really hard marker, I did my biographical presentation, i thought i did better than i did, but she disagreed, i like history but she was a bit too hard
She is a very strict marker. Marks more on grammar than content which frustrated me. Often unclear on what she wants for the precis. Exams are completely written and quizzes every class on chapters. She is helpful if you ask for it though. Tough class. Harder than my other history courses. But she is nice.
Barbara was a great prof. Her lectures are really interesting with lots of visuals. she is really knowledgeable and helpful. There is quite a lot of work but she is very clear about expectations. I actually did not find her to be a hard marker. She is super nice and very fair.
i have nothing negative to say about Messamore. She is always prepared for class and treats everybody fairly. extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and is always in a pleasant mood. my favourite prof so far!
Barbara Messamore's lectures are extremely engaging. She is a very fair marker who gives lots of feedback, and she answers emails promptly. She's one of the best online instructors I've ever had.
hardest prof i have ever had. would not recommend to anyone who cares about their marks. she is such a hard marker it is almost impossible to get an A
There is a lot of reading to do - every class you have to have read a chapter from the textbook and then she gives a quiz on the chapter you read. You also have to read a long article for every class and fill out a worksheet on it. Prepare for at least 2 hours of outside reading per class. She is a hard marker but overall is a nice prof.
Messamore knows her stuff, however, she had unrealistic expectations for a first year course and I found that she was a very tough marker. Expect to read a lot and be careful about your wording and accuracy, you will get dinged for being vague. She was the toughest teacher I have ever had (this is my last semester), I would NOT recommend her
i found her to be a very hard marker for a first year class. I should have know because she was one of the authors of the textbook for this class. she does know her stuff and expects you to know her stuff too! her assignments were not hard and she does mark you down for grammar and proper sentence structuring. I have a 3.4 GPA and i struggled
Barbara is a champ and totally recommended.
For an online course I was pretty happy. For each unit you would have 2 quizzes, often a worksheet, and 4 'precises' through the course. I had never heard of a precis, and did very poor on my first one, but she allowed one re-write (so I figure most people missed the mark). I averaged 3/5 on quizzes without reading, but if you have time, read!
Barbara assigns too much reading and expects far too much for a first year course. She asks for one chapter and an article read plus a worksheet done before each class. On average, that's about 60 pages of reading per week. I have had easier 2nd year courses than this! As I am taking this for the TEP requirement, I have to take it at some point.
I am a third year student who typically gets A's on academic papers. However, Barbara is an extremely tough marker and I got the worst marks I have ever received on papers in her class and this was a first year course!
I found this class to be easy even though there were 2 quizzes and a worksheet every week and 4 precis. She gives amazing feedback so if you mess up on one assignment you know exactly what to fix for the next one. She is understanding with late hand ins on blackboard. Her lectures had fun and weird facts thrown in which was nice.
I really enjoyed class with Barbara. Interesting lectures that led to an understanding of the important events in the 40 years leading up to Confederation in Canada. Something all Canadians should learn. The weekly readings are pretty much mandatory to get your participation grade.
I took her condensed summer semester class with three other classes and found the amount of assignments and readings very fair. If you enjoy history and don't mind reading then you'll enjoy this course and do well. Just make sure you show up and take notes.
Barbara was nice enough for an online class. However, she was so picky when it came to marking. for a first year online history class she needs to chill. I generally do well on my papers and writing, but she picked everything apart and marked as if it were an English course. She was a co-author for the required text, so couldn't really critique it.
Incredible course load would definitely hurt people's passion toward history. Anybody who are interested on history and have above 45 university credits could take this course. I do have interest on history and would like to learn but I feel I don't learn much from this course because the only thing I consider is how to get assignments done.
Barbara is overall a good teacher, it all just comes down to personal preference with her. Her course work is well thought through and good for a first year class. Her lectures just consist of her standing at the front speaking to you while you take notes on what you deem important. She does do quizzes on the textbook chapters but they are easy.
This was one of the first university classes I took and I found as I got about half way through her class her lectures and the readings from the text had nothing to do with each other. When it comes to papers, good luck getting anything other than an C! She marks on grammar, and picks apart the papers. Got an A in English and barely passed this.
Worst professor I've ever had! Tons of reading, vague info on papers she wants you to write. She marks more on grammar then actual content. I have a 4.0gpa and I'm struggling to pass. I will not take another class with her. She isn't available if you need help or have questions. I was going to go for my history minor but I'm rethinking it now.
I understand why people have problems with this prof, but I think they are very minor. Her marking is a little vague on papers and her rubrics for some assignments are rather arbitrary, but she is approachable to discuss anything you need clarification on. A solid prof, but might be a bit hard for first years.
I would not recommend taking her classes. She spends more time marking papers on grammer over content and it is very hard to get anything above a C+ on papers. Her lectures are easy to follow but she is test heavy. I tried contacting her a few times and she never once responded to me so you are pretty much on your own. Steer clear of this prof.
I had a great experience with Barbara as my prof. Her assignments have a lot of variety, so there's opportunity to do well no matter your learning style. She also gives super clear instructions and is always organized. There was a lot of reading and many small assignments, so be prepared for that.
Worst professor I have had. Her lectures are interesting but the workload is hard to keep up with, she does not respond to emails and is gives very little feedback on papers. She grades your grammar and use of punctuation more then the actual content of the work. Very discouraging class and I do not recommend taking her class.
Dr. Messamore is a prof who is suited for upper year courses. She grades first year courses similar to how she grades upper year courses - ruthlessly. The content is dry (history) but she explains it well. On assignments she focuses on grammar and punctuation and will deduct heavy marks for any/all errors. Not a grade booster, but you'll learn lots
I took this class as a credit for my History minor and boy did I regret it . If you have no knowledge of Canadian and Political History don't take this class . The lectures were very long and she relies heavily on the assigned articles . She doesn't explain material very well and uses a bunch of jargon . Never again .
Worst prof I have had! DO NOT take a class with her! She was more focused on grammar then content and is the toughest marker ever. She expects you be an expert in history and writing which is not realistic for a first year class. Also get ready to read and have literally NO life at all. Steer clear of this prof!!!!
Excellent Professor.
Professor Messamore was absolutely incredible! So kind and caring and overall an amazing teacher. I was having a rough time at home whilst in her class and she really helped me through it all and made me feel a lot more confident in myself. She treats each student like they're the only ones in the class. Workload is light. Grades easy. 10/10!!
I took this class as an elective, I thought it would be nice to learn about our history and it would be an easy A. I currently am a straight A student.. Well not anymore. She cares more about your grammar and punctuation than if you are actually learning anything in her class. There is assigned reading, quizzes, and worksheets (& MORE) every week.
I cannot stress this enough: her lectures give inaccurate information. She based a whole lecture on a specific map. The map was nearly 150 yrs off from what she claimed. She mispronounced the name of nearly every French figure or institution. She made vague statements about the Scots that are factually untrue. Easy A, sure. But SO unreliable.
This class was very interesting and barbara does a great job at explaining the historical events. The chapters take a very long time to read and there are weekly quizzes on every chapter that are easy marks. 3 mini papers were based off of articles and the final exam and midterm differ each time but we had to write a paper.
She was a great professor who answered emails quickly and was not too harsh with assignments. But the class required a lot of reading, as well as time for lectures, quizzes, worksheets, and the final exam. Keep in mind I did this class condensed. It was a difficult class, but I learned a lot, and that's what counts.
You will be reading 30 pages of new material, 2 quizzes, a lecture and an assignment every week. That is not including 3 precis assignments midterm and final. I could not keep up in my 4 other classes because of this one.
A lot of reading. She will assign textbook reading, a lecture two quizzes and a worksheet with a 15-40 page article attached. But honestly if you read the textbook and pay attention to the lecture its not the most difficult class. I would advise against taking her if you have a heavy workload/not a lot of extra time.
Great Professor. Very clear grading guidelines for assignments and exams. Provides all the information in lectures to maintain a great grade. Very responsive by email. I would take her again.
She is very knowledgable, and her course is so work heavy. She is more focused on punctuation than the history material that is being taught. When I would email her asking how to improve my grades she gave me little advice and continued to dock points solely on punctuation and grammar. If you don't need this class, avoid it.
Unless you have a light semester load, avoid this class with this professor. Every week there is at least one lecture, two quizzes, and one assignment that required reading a twentyish pg article. She is so focused on little structure critiques, and doesn't seem to care about the actual information that her students are absorbing. Avoid this class.
Although there was a lecture, textbook chapter, article, and 2 quizzes each week, I felt it was equal to what an in-person class would be. I liked that there were multiple things to be graded on, and she was very responsive when emailed. I'm a history nerd, so maybe that allowed me to enjoy her class a bit more, but overall, she wasn't bad at all.
Nice as a person however lecture are long and boring. She doesn't use words in her PowerPoints so it makes it harder to follow along with her, the work load is also quite heavy. She expects you to be able to find the mandatory reading articles on your own.
Do not take this class!!! Heaviest workload I have ever seen. I dropped it in the first week. She seemed nice, but if you are trying to avoid assignments, this is not for you. I had the condensed class and there were 3 assignments due from Tuesday - Friday, 2 lectures, 2 quizzes every week and 3 major writing assignments for the whole 6 week term.
Messamore is great if you are eager to learn and are passionate about history. I just needed a course to graduate. Barbara always responded quickly and was helpful when I reached out. Her assignments were a little unclear and often I did not fully understand what she required. If you want to learn lots and read lots this is the class for you.
Good luck
Someone who downplays Indigenous Genocide and history should not be in the history department. AVOID at all costs.
She is incredibly ableist. Her article about John A. Macdonald is also disturbing to say the least. Take this class if you only want to learn and worship old white men. No inclusivity on any level in this class.
This professor is racist and actively promotes her racism through a right wing news blog called the Dorchester Review, the fact she has tenure at UFV is at ideological odds with reconciliation efforts. This prof denies the horrors of Indian Residential Schools and denies the genocide of Indigenous people in Canada. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Barbara is very opinionated and critical. She marks heavily based on her personal beliefs and opinions. She is super picky and will tear your work apart. She tends to focus on the negative aspects of your work instead of the positive aspects.
This prof is very opinionated and holds very strong biases which can be seen through her comments on student work, as well as grades on assignments such as essays. She does not believe that colonialism led to Indigenous genocide, and will give lower grades to students who do not share this view. I would not recommend her, or her classes.
Not sure how she is still aloud to teach.
She is great at responding to emails. She is a difficult markers, there's two quizzes every week and despite taking notes & re-reading, i found it difficult to recall everything with a minute per question. The weekly assignments are fairly easy and she gives great feedback. Midterm/final she is an extremely hard grader.
Very hard marker. She critiques writing quality very heavily- more than actual history content. Also takes a while for her to grade assignments.
Despite much of the class being pre-prepared before the semester begins, Mrs. Messamore obviously loves the subject matter covered, and it comes through in her attitude about any inquiries into class material. Lots of reading, but what's a History course without it. Would take again 100%.
I usually try to be understanding and forgiving towards my teachers, but I should have listened to the warnings not to take her class. She was slow to return grades and kept revising due dates, so sometimes, oops, she made a mistake, and it's due tomorrow. I didn't mind the actual content, but save yourself the trouble and avoid her class
This class requires a lot of weekly reading, quizzes and assignments. While the workload is heavy, using Unstuck study alongside the textbook and lectures can help manage the pace. The professor gives clear grading guidelines, but can be a tough marker.
Barbara uses a very big textbook and grades hard on her papers. Her video lectures are great but she does 2 weekly quizzes on her lecture and another on the textbook. She does a weekly worksheet that is long enough with the other weekly homework on top of that. I will not take another class with her. Her paper feedback is kind of harsh
For a hundred-level course, it is a lot of work. She marks work extremely hard, and feedback on papers is not the best. One plus is that she answers emails extremely quick and will help if needed. Overall, a good person, but not a great professor.
