She gives plenty of homework with the answers worked out and gives good notes for easy reference later.
This class is so freakin' easy. Almost too easy though, so easy that you want to skip. She also bakes and brings food when you get into division. Yes, I said division.
Very good professor and very helpful. Just pay attention and come to class.
class was the most boring thing i've ever done in my life. it was very difficult to put myself through that and actually go.
Gives a LOT of homework (and collects it too). You hate it at first but in the end you know it was best (got me an "A").
if you are going into calculus, this is an awesome class. a lot of difficulty with caclulus is the algebra part of it... just do all the work!

A ridiculous amount of work. Hwk, group, and indiv. projects. Good teacher but way too much work.
This teacher is great. She gives a ton of homework, but it helps you understand. I have an "A" in her class and I would definately take her again. She puts a lot of effort into helping her classes, and gives out lots of examples to help the students. Test is just like pracice tests!
terrible subject, great teacher who will make you understand it, a lot of homework though, a lot.
The class isn't a piece of cake but if you need help, she is more than willing to help. Going to class is essential in understanding the material.
wonderful person & best professor/math teacher i've ever had. she's incredibly helpful & encouraging, generous with office hours. true, the class is fastpaced & there's a lot of homework, and she gives you the answers ! BUT if you simply copy the answers everytime you'll do crappy on the tests - DO THE HOMEWORK YOURSELF ! seriously, it helps a ton.
She's a good teacher, but the class goes VERY fast ! I wouln't miss a single class if you didn't have to. She gives a little extra credit, DO IT ! She grades hard on the test, but she lets you know what she's expecting before. She doesn't let you write any words on the formula sheet. But if you have to take this class, take her.
She has no clue what she's talking about, and its obvious she makes up her own math problems. May be for other math classes she was good, but she's clueless. It's not hard but it's a ridiculous amount of work and she grades very unfairly. She'll take points off for things you mess up, and someone will mess up the same thing and get credit.
Yes, she did have a slight problem with getting the chalk all over herself. But, all in all I learned a great deal and got an A in the class. It wasn't difficult for those that did the homework and the study guides. She walks you though many questions prior to the exam. I would take another one of her classes if I needed more math
Very good person, but I don't know that I would take her again. Math is my best subject and I got a D in the course. She teaches it well but gives hard tests and grades it even harder! The home work is easy though, she give you the answers, but that almost makes you not want to do it yourself.
You can't miss class cuz it's hard to keep up with the material. She explains everything in a way so that it was really easy to understand (uses visuals and props). Write everything she puts on the board and you won't even have to look at the textbook to do the homeworks and tests. Pay attention to class and ask questions when you don't understand!
Take her if you don't have a life maybe, she gives so much homework it's impossible to have time to do anything else.
She does give a lot of homework but its not hard at all. SHe gives answer keys for all homework, assignments, tests, and quizzes. She explains things really well so that everything is easy to understand. However, if you miss a day of class it is very hard to get back on track.
She was nice, but not clear with her teaching, she would make you feel stupid if and when you are trying to figure it out. she grades hard, and i didnt like her teaching technique..did not go over homework at all, left up to tutor time, and half of the turtors didnt know...she didnt use book, she used her own technique was hard to understand her way
very moody with her teaching style, did not like how she was not consitence with the work, was confuse on how to teach it...alot of work, never went over homework..fast pace, not respectful towards students..
Gives homework with answers. Writes on the blackboard alot. Always willing to explain things. Brings food to explain math problems!! Yum
I love the brownies. She doesn't collect homework, but it is assigned. Its up to you to do it. Tests are very hard. She is a very nice teacher though.
Knows the material very well. Not good at expressing the material. She teaches over the students heads.
Math classes aren't really easy for me, but I pulled a B by going to her office all the time for help. She was really available for students. The tests were hard, but I think it's par for the course for Pre-Cal. **If you want to succeed, I suggest doing the homework problems & seeing a tutor.**
I took her for stats 205 and I got an A+ and now I am taking her for Math 109 and I have an A+. She is the best math teacher ever. She gives a ton of homework but it really helps boost your grade if you do it. She also gives a ton of bonuses which help ALOT! and All of her quizes are take home quizes. She also always makes part of her tests take ho
Stats will never be a fun class but Barbara does a great job at trying to help the student. She uses great examples, does give out candy, and really strives to make sure you know it. You can tell she's passionate about stats. Gives a ton of extra credit. If you don't do it, that's your own fault. It will definitely help you get a good grade.
Professor Phillips... she is a nice teacher. You do learn a great amount, but there is a lot of homework. I mean more than you can think. She does give the answer sheets with the homework though, but if you copy, you really won't learn. I don't really think I'd take her again...
I am really bad at math so it will always be tough, but ms phillips always is willing to help... she does give extra credit and candy, but you have to be self motivated or she will be hard
HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR ANYTHING EVER!!!!!!
I love Professor Phillips! I was terrified of Stats before this class, and she helped me get an A! It was a lot of work and you have to stay on top of your homework. Just go to every class and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!! If you need this class...take her!
She definitely knows what she's talking about but had a tough time conveying it to the class. There is A LOT of extra work that needs to be done outside of class in order to stay on top of the studies. I saw many classmates drop before I did. I tried sticking it out as far as I could but had to drop so I wouldn't get an F.
Although attendance is not mandatory, I suggest going to class. It's really hard to understand if you do not go to class. She is very helpful though. She gives bonus assignments, but they are only worth 3-5 points.
Class is so boring. She's generally nice, but won't help you. She'll refer you to blackboard or the book. Its an easy math class though.. for those who hate math.
Does not understand how to work with students or help explain things to them.
she has her funny moments, but is mostly rude and makes students feel stupid when they have questions. i took the class with two friends and when one of them wouldn't show up i would get dirty looks. i think she loves math; students on the other hand, not so much. her favorite students are the ones that DON'T ask questions during class.
if you are bad at Math, take her! She is the best Math teacher I have ever had!
The class is really hard! But, it isn't because of the teacher, there is just a lot to cover and not much time. She is a good teacher and she posts notes that you just have to print. There are also assignments that are pretty hard and daily homework. I say, if you need the class then take it, she's not too hard, and it goes by pretty fast.
I hated her. Shes an unfair grader and writes rude comments on your tests and hw if you made a silly mistake. Grades easier on students she likes. Loved my roomate. hated me for no reason. AVIOD.
I love her! She is great! I hate stats. I have a very hard time with math and she is always willing and wanting to help. Class is not mandatory and can be really boring if you don't like graphs, but she gives you print out notes so you don't have to get lost in confusion with your own notes. I would recommend her to my friends!
Shes awesome. Super helpful, makes learning the material a breeze but you still have to focus and learn the problems. Actually makes math fun. I would definatly take her again.
Nice lady, terrible professor. I don't learn much out of already typed notes plus it seems like the statistics program is too much information crammed into one semester. Honestly, she didn't teach it very well.
She grades unfairly, if she doesn't like you or your wording of things then you fail. She definitely has her favorites and expects you to know everything, even before she teaches it! She's pretty much your typical crazy cat lady...DON'T TAKE HER unless you like cats too.
i LOVED her!!! a lot of people complain about her but that's just because stats isn't an easy topic. if you actually go to every one of her classes and take notes and do the homework you will get it. ask her questions, she will talk to you after class. i think i'm going to take stats 2 just because of how much i liked and learned from her. :)
easy A, very slow paced class, very clear and comprehensive teaching style, but absolutely borring (biased due to hatred of math)
She's a great teacher! but if you don't do any of the book work she will chew you up and spit you out. Highly recommend it!
She is an awesome person, but her class is very fast paced. She is very willing to help you but she will be on your butt about homework and book problems. Tests are unbelievably hard. I have a D and I havent missed a day of class, I have done all assign. and extra credit. I suggest you stay on top of everything and communicate with her!
no comment
I practically lived in her office this past semester! She is ALWAYS willing to help a student who wants help. She looks for effort, not just in class but outside of class (completing non-graded practice assignments). If you're not that good at Math, attendance is imperative. I heard she's one of the best of the Math Prof.'s here. TAKE HER!
Outstanding! I would recommend her to any students that is having trouble with STA 205. She explains everything clearly.Barbara, cares about her students and goes out of her way to help. The information is given in step by step procdure. This subject requires to do the homework assignments if you fail to do that you will struggle!
The teacher never helped me at all. She decided at the beginning of the semester that she didn't like the book so she was going to write her own notes from the book, and could not afford to print her notes, told not to bring the book, and that I was getting homework wrong because she wanted different answers than the book. No bueno!
If you take her you'll be glad you did as she is usually pretty clear about the work. But if you attend class inconsistently you will very easily get on her bad side. Don't do that.
I don't understand why there are so many poor reviews. Barbara was so helpful when I took her class. She was very clear about what she taught and had answer keys to all the homework for us to check our work. I took 205 before and got a D, I retook it with her and got a 99. She's a great professor and she's always willing to help. I'd recommend her!
This class is not a piece of cake. She's very helpful if you ask for it though. I would highly recommend that you take her class if you can.
She tries to be helpful and keep the class interested. She only uses the book for homework.
Barbara is very good at explaining things. MAT115 is a low-level gen ed, so I found the class very simple. She is very detailed in her explanations. She expects you to do your book homework. People probably fail this class because attendance is not mandatory. You have to go to any math class every day if you don't want to fall behind. Recommend.
Barbara was extremely helpful and clear. I'm terrible at math and I managed to pull a C in her class. If you ask for help, she's more than willing to give it. This class is not a piece of cake. As long as you stay on top of homework and actually study it's manageable. I would definitely recommend her class.
She was not the est proffesor. She wouldn't not help you at all. It was either her way or the high in her class. SHe would not go over the home work.
She was extremely helpful, as long as you asked for it. She does well explaining things the first time. Am very bad at Math and managed to do pretty well in this class! Plus there is lots of food!
Really straight to the point and some humor. The key to this class is to DO THE WORK. Most of the class barely did anything and would complain. It's really not that hard and I barely tried. It just takes a little time and practice. Attendance is REALLY helpful and book is used for HOMEwork. If you go to her during office hours, she helps very much.
Wasn't an overly difficult class and you do the hardest things at the beginning of the semester. If you aren't good at math, you may struggle, but she will help if you ask her. You will need the textbook for homework and she cares more about completion than if you are right or wrong. Make sure to study for tests and do your homework.
Nicest and most helpful teacher I've had in college. Shill help you in any way you need if you just ask. Mandatory bookwork is assigned but not graded, you just have to do it to "qualify" to take the test, which is more helpful than it is annoying. Fill in notes are also very helpful, expect to use a lot of printer ink.
Go to class!! If you miss a day you miss a lot. I am horrible at math but I finished with an A. This stats class is more of understanding the big picture and plugging numbers in to the right spots. Do all the hw, assignments, BONUS work, notes, very helpful Study guides &an extra hour before tests & you'll not only pass but fully understand as well
Basically, attend class and take the notes she puts on the board. If you study those affectively, you should get an A. Not a difficult class if you do the work. She offers extra credit. Blackboard Homework is completion, but the Assignments are graded. I would recommend this class. Textbook is needed for homework.
I took this course as an 8 week summer session. IF you do ALL of the homework and attend her study groups you WILL pass. She gives enough extra credit that an A is very achievable goal. I have talked to students that took Stats 205 with other professors and Profess. Phillips does the most to assure her students pass!!! TAKE STATS 205 WITH HER!
Mrs. Phillips is an amazing professor. She is incredibly helpful and understanding at a personal level as well as professional. You do need to work despit MAT 115 is a class someone who isn't the best at math. She is willing to help you after class and will meet with you to help you understand the material. She is awesome and I would take it again.
I may be a tad bit bias on the easiness because I'm not that bad with math but still an amazing class. She works with you to help you learn and is always available during office hours. You MUST do the work so the book will be needed or you can use her book, which is what I did. Take notes
I'm really bad at math but Barbara helped me during her office hours and that helped me in the long run. She kinda goes fast during class so get ready to pay attention. You have daily homework thats due before each test and then required homework that you must do before taking the test. Her test are difficult but if you studied you will do fine.
Originally had a bad experience first time with Stats. Took Professor Phillips and will come out with some great new knowledge. Homework can be tedious and lengthy at times, but if you do them when assigned and not all at once before the due date you'll be fine. No joke, she really goes above and beyond to help her students succeed in her class.
Professor Phillips is literally the best! I have always struggled at math but in her class I have pretty much made all As. She does assign a lot of homework, but practice makes perfect, so do not slack. Her lectures are kinda boring, but she is really helpful. She really wants her students to succeed. I can not wait to take her for STA 205!
I'm so glad that I ended up in her section of this course. She pre-makes notes for class that you just have to fill in, gives plenty of prep work for tests, and helps as much as she can. She even offered to help me with another course in which I was struggling. I ended up switching my major to statistics after this class.
As a student who is not skilled in the art of all things mathematical, she certainly helped motivate me to start learning and committing it to memory. The pre-written notes help me learn and I was able to pass this class!
Professor Phillips was amazing! If you showed up to class and did the homework, you did great. Miss 1 day and you might feel lost for a little bit. She is very accessible outside of class, gives a lot of grace, and does anything to make sure you pass as long as you work hard. Definitely would recommend!
Barbara helped me finally pass a math course! Attendance was not mandatory but if you didn't show up, you would not pass. Her tests were appropriately challenging and she always gave out some sort of extra credit. The only complaint I have is her homework. She assigned homework that had to be completed for the test but it was not for a grade.
If you aren't amazing at math, like I wise, seek her help! She's a difficult professor however you will learn a lot of if you apply yourself and actually attempt to do the homework. So e-mail her to visit her during office hours as much as possible, she is more than willing to help those who struggle in math.
Barbara was a great teacher. We always had homework but In this case it was a good thing b/c this is a math course. Homework isn't optional. In order to take your test you must turn your homework in and get it right. She does give you the answer key for every assignment. All of the content from the class is explained very well with detailed notes.
While Phillips gives lots of homework, she always gives the answers to them so you can get everything right. She will tell you exactly whats on the test and help you if you need to. The final is just like any other test. She is a great teacher, I would highly suggest her and her class MAT 115. The class teaches you a lot of real life application.
This is definitely one of the harder classes that I've taken. You have a lot of homework that you are required to turn in or you cannot take the test. I wouldn't recommend skipping because its almost impossible to catch up. However she does give several bonus opportunities and forces you to know the material.
Go to class, she takes attendance. There's a healthy does of homework so be ready. You need the book but you can get the older version.
If a class with a lot of homework isnt your cup of tea, avoid this class. She gives a lot of ungraded work that has to be turned in to take tests and the final. However, she makes you learn the material and shes gives plenty of exams and tells you exactly how shell ask certain topics on the tests.
Best math teacher I've ever had! I learned so much without trouble, which is a miracle. She made everything easy to understand. I hated the ungraded work you had to keep up with if you didn't want a 0 on real graded assignments, but it actually was a big plus because I learned and retained the material. Great for those who suck at math like me!
I had Ms. Phillips years ago at Cincinnati State. I cannot say enough good things. She explains concepts well, and repeats procedures enough for you to know them. Gives extra credit. Answers every question. Does everything possible to help you succeed. If you're looking for a math class without homework, good luck, what a stupid complaint.
This professor is very rude. She will ask if people have questions and then snap at them if they do not understand. It is very discouraging and the work in general is very complicated to understand. Especially when most people can not even ask her for help.
She went to school with Mike Pence and she is a little embarrassed by it. really funny and if you take good notes and pay attention you'll pass.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had! I usually hate math because I never get it but the way she uses real life examples really helps me understand the content. Professor Phillips is funny, friendly, and helpful :)
Very rude and belittles people for wrong answers. Her style of teaching is too fast paced and complicated.
Comes off as a nice and caring person that wants you to do well, but her notes are very jumbled and confusing at times because everything is handwritten. There is A LOT of hw in this class. I used over an entire notebook's worth of paper just for the homework. If math doesn't come easily for you, you will find this class to be very challenging.
Pretty good professor. Sometimes can be hard to follow but she gives a lot of chances to understand a concept. Really nice and goes the extra mile to care for/bond with her students. It is a lot of work, but for a math class it's pretty easy. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
She makes you do homework that she won't take for a grade, but you still have to complete it to take the test. So if you don't turn it in you will get an automatic 0 on the test. The amount of homework she gives is ridiculous, I wouldn't recommend her to anybody.
This teacher is the worst I've ever had. The amount of homework is for this class was 10 hours a week. If you have a part time job or any other responsibility's (LIKE OTHER CLASSES) this is not the class for you. There is no book. Also, I took the "helper" class that was supposed to be a tutoring class. She just lectured LONGER and I got NO HELP.
IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS! IT WAS AWFUL. I had to take it for the credit but omg it was ridiculously hard and it takes HOURS to do the homework that, by the way, you get EVERY class. Overall, It sucked!
Professor Phillips is bizarrely aggressive towards her students and snaps when asked questions about content she is covering on the board. She doesn't seem to delegate class time wisely and is constantly stressed as a result, this makes for a tense class environment where students are afraid to ask for clarification. I do not recommend this her.
Caring always helpful
She is the worst professor I have had and she gives absurd amounts of homework that have to be done to take the tests. If you are missing a single homework assignment then you can't take the test. She has jumbled confusing notes and uses strange methods when solving some problems. There is no book, so you have to print out 50+ of notes. Stay away!
Shes a great pro and youll learn a lot the only thing is youll have a lot of homework and you need to make time for it. Overall shes good.
Professor Phillips cuts off her personal life to make more time for her students and is dedicated to spending her office hours to help student better understand. She acknowledges different learning styles and pays special attention to students who need extra help. Attend class with full attention, and schedule office hours.
I've hated math my entire life. Barbara helped me to see that math can make sense sometimes. She's an awesome lady and genuinely caring. she can be a bit harsh at times if you slack off. read every single canvas update and email and DONT LET YOURSELF FALL BEHIND! you will crash and burn if you do. Had her during covid. rough at first but got better
A majority of the work you do in this course while easy, is given in overwhelming quantities, especially with the online learning being implemented. Most work assigned isnt graded, but she will still check for accuracy, make you redo the work, and not allow you to take the test until it is done. Easy A, but lots of late nights.
doesnt give enough time for other classes makes you buy the book but didnt use it blamed me for not understanding the material and makes you sign a contract that states you must do ungraded and graded h.w to qualify to take the final and made me feel like i was not smart enough to learn the material
This professor assigns a deathly load of homework, beyond a point of logic or help. The amount became so severe I was unable to think about my other classes. 90 % of the homework doesn't even count towards your actual grade, yet you cannot take a test without doing her pointless work. Is extremely rude and condescends students who need help.
Don't take this professor. She assigns a deathly load of homework, I literally can't even think about my other classes. She expects you to know how to do all basic algebra, and doesn't offer help on anything that isn't her own work that she assigns. The actual homework doesn't even affect your grade. Expect 100 emails from her a day.
I am more awful then sin at math, however I took this class and I never imagined id ever see an A on my teat in college again. If you do well with follow along notes, and attend class and space out the home work you will be fine! I never been so succesful at math before and ive never haf a instructor who drilled the knowledge as much as she did!
Very understanding but way too much homework assigned and didnt pass most of the students in the class with a B or higher so they couldnt move on.
She runs a tight ship but will make you understand the math in a way no one else can. DO NOT TAKE A FULL TIME SCHEDULE WHILE TAKING MAT115. No more than 1 other course!! The course content is easy to understand if you participate in class, pay attention and do the piles of homework, easy A! She also favors those who ask questions & visit office.
Do not take this class unless you are able to dedicate about 20 hours a week doing homework that you do not get graded on. It must be turned in and done correctly to "qualify" for the test. Homework sucks but it helps you learn the material. overall I learned more in this class than I ever have from ANY math teacher.
She is a nice woman and is very accessible outside of class. Wouldn't recommend to students who don't do well on tests because it is a test only final grade. The more you get into the semester the tons of more homework you have and it becomes overwhelming. Don't take this "entry level" class unless you were good at geometry
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! She is not the kind of professor that you would like in a 7-week course!! She will have you spend hours till the end doing her homework. She has homeworks and assignments that she won't even grade but won't let you move on until you complete the problem correctly. If you fail behind it will be hard to get back on track.
Barbara is nice for the most part, but the way she runs the class certainly isn't. Assignments/workload desperately needs to change to allow students to learn the material through work that is more reasonable and less overwhelming. Only a few assignments are graded, and the workload (mostly ungraded work) is excessive, even during finals week.
Barbara Phillips made me understand math in a way I never have before. I think she is the best math teacher I have ever had and I am extremely grateful to have taken her class. I see many people complaining about her homework workload but homework is to be expected in any math class. She offers many extra credit opportunities and was very helpful.
This is one of those classes that seems like a lot in the moment but you are later grateful for. She is really good at drilling important concepts into your brain and is always willing to help. Loved this prof she was an amazing math teacher.
