She is hard, but VERY willing to help, she has stayed as late as 10pm
truly wants us to understand and is there all the time to help
Very excited about her field, but her expectations are too high
very smart but hard to follow in class, disorganized
VERY very helpful...always there when you need her
Probably the best profesor i had this semester

most helpful teacher ever, will stop everything she is doing for you

There are high expec tations. Too smart to teach a beginning level course.
she is so scattered and her expectations are too high.
hard class, but she knows her stuff and WANTS to help!!!!
She is fabulous , her tests are fair and be prepared to work
so nice. very excited about her work. wants to help and is always around
DISORGANIZED! Advice: shut out her scattered teaching and study ALOT!!
She really cares about her work & her students, takes time to help no matter wha

Most helpful teacher in chem depart. Tests are hard, but paying attention helps
dr. reisner is the best...not really easy..but fair & extremely helpful!!!
good notes=good test...here to help students, trying=do well.
very organized notes for lectures but pretty hard tests due to very high expectations. tests are normally in 2 parts, 1 totally fill in the blank and the other scantron.
It's a lot of work for a 1 credit class. She gives pretty good instructions, but that doesn't make it easy.
Blah... I hated this class...she's too smart to be teaching it. Her expectations are way too high for this level.
the way she explained chemical equations was by combining cheese and bread to make a grilled cheese sandwich. she would give you an F with a smile on her face. hated it
WAY TOO HIGH EXPECTATIONS!
LOVE THIS WOMAN! no one likes chem so they take it out on her for doing poorly-- take advantage of all the extra help she gives you!!! It's hard work but she motivates you the whole way through doesn't care if you fail but helps SOO much if YOU care!!!
She knows everyones name! Its pretty scary, but the class is hard. The tests are hard, but shes a good teacher. Fairly boring lecture, and the workshops everyweek suck! Nice lady though.

very knowledgable
Horrible teacher I've ever known. So can smile at you and try to look all nice but still gives you an F with no sympathy. Get out of her class if you can.
Hardest grader ever. Way too much work for a 1 credit course. Not worth it at all. I learn absolutely nothing. This class is a total waste of time. She doesn't teach, expect students to know everything.
not a pleasent experience
THIS CLASS SUX. THE**** IS INSANELY HARD UNLESS YOUR ARE GENIUS. WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS YOU FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U DONT HAVE TO.
131 is a tough class. she teaches it really well. lots of opportunities for help and she answers questions well. tests are a bummer, she has high expectations. having a good background in high school chem helps. take MWF...the more you see chem, the better you'll remember/know it
Are you kidding me? This lady treated us like we were stupid in our lab. Her "initial and revised" models are stupid and serve no purpose. Way, way too much work for a one credit course.
This class sux!! She is the worst teacher ever! She seems all nice and stuff but deep down inside shes evil! She takes joy in failing EVERYONE. Our class broke records for the lowest test avgs. thats gotta say something right there. Do not take this class with her!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. EVIL PROF Class averages for tests were in the 40s. TAKE DR. Warnaar instead. I would say at least 20% dropped the class. 60% got a D or F. If you take her good luck. You will struggle I almost guarantee it. She puts problems on the tests that we do not go over or she assigns.
EVIL, EVIL, EVIL. That pretty much sums things up. She takes joy in failing kids and her tests may seem like you will do well on them, but she takes off points for every single little thing in the world. There is no way to pass this class, so dont even bother.
I dont like this lady with a passion. She enjoys watching kids fail and her questions that she makes up are so unclear that she has trouble answering them herself. She needs to ease up on grading a little. Stay away from her, shes evil and you WILL fail!!
WORST PROFESSOR! Test averages are horrible and no matter how much you study or how well you think you know it, you won't pass.
She's horrible! She cannot teach and loves to show others how smart she is. If you go to her office hours she'll just make you feel even dumber. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
I dont know about her lecture course, but in lab she was extremely helpful and very easy. She was always more than willing to stay after with me to explain was still unclear from the lab.
she teaches material pretty well, but her tests do not correspond to the notes OR the book. She has fun making tests that are hard and enjoys it when the whole class flunks. It doesnt matter how much you study, this demon wants you to fail.
Flat out- she doesn't care, she will fail you with a smile on her face... Sorry chem majors the class is required, for anyone else... STAY AWAY!!!
Very difficult class. Material is sometimes hard to understand. However, everyone who says she is the devil is just upset because they got bad grades. I failed one of her tests also, but work hard on the problem sets and other assignments and you will be rewarded.
Let's just say this...if you get her...drop the class
Dr. Reisner is a very nice lady and tries to be helpful but the way she presents the material is hard to understand unless you have already mastered the concepts. Her class means a lot of work on your own. Hard to get good grade, test averages are about a 50%
chem is hard and it is A LOT OF WORK no matter who you get, but this woman is insane.she flies through the material and doesnt teach everything she puts on her tests. the book's no help and so its up to you to learn the material. you can study REALLY hard and just pull a C on the test. only take her if you can teach yourself and know chem already.
This woman will make your life hell. No matter how hard you study or how many countless hours you spend trying to do your best, this class will get the best of you and she does NOT care. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS! She is 100% horrible - unclear classes, pointless assignments (which she takes the stuff you didn't cover and tests you on THAT), and simply a crappy teacher. She belongs in the field, not a classroom! avoid her class at all costs possible!!!
Chem is a tough class and this teaher does her best to work students through it. She is always willing to help students outside of the classroom. Her test problems aren't worded the best, but if you truly understand the material you will be fine.
She's such a terrible person and an awful uncaring teacher. Lots of anger towards her, don't take her class, you'll end up dead.
Very nice lady. The class is really hard to begin with, but I got a lot out of going to talk to her, if you need help studying, she'll show you a way that really improved my understanding of the material. She's very helpful outside of class and is a good teacher, compared to some of the other chem teachers, her lectures are good.
I would describe her almost as like a "conman," or "Conwomen." Her basic style of teaching in class leaves you blown away after taking her exams which are impossible. Her class average was a 61. She seems nice but will fail you without thinking twice, she does not care.
If you are rating her based on 131 and griping that she is a bad teacher, you are wrong. Not only did i work for her, and not only was she an advisor of mine, but i had her for many classes for four years. There is a difference between not understanding a topic and not understanding a teacher. She is a very nice lady.
She's a nice enough person but I feel that if your class average is somwhere in the 50s or 60s it is the professors fault, not the students that they are doing poorly. She needs to curve her tests when the average is that low. It's rough that she doesn't curve but i guess of the other teachers she's a good choice.
She was a terrible teacher! If i didn't take 3 years of advanced chemistry in highschool I would have failed. The test averages were 62 or below. I recieved a B, because of my background. Her tests are also very unfair.
dear chem department. please throw this witch out of the school so us poor students can sleep at night. o yes, and give her some hair gell while ur at it
one word describes it all ****...dont take her unless you have to and forget getting help its non existant. She also has the habit of reforming ur question as another question. dont take her
VERY HARD! She is a pretty good teacher and nice lady when you go in to talk to her, but her class is extremely difficult! The tests are by far harder than any chem skill or book problems. I would stay away, even if you are a chem major
Hardest class I've taken so far. I still have no earthly idea how I passed that class. Must have been a 30 point curve or something. Her tests are insane. INSANE! CSB, book problems, etc. will not prepare you for the pain of the tests. She seems easy at first, but let me tell you. She is the chem teacher of your nightmares.
sadist. her tests are awful, she puts things on there we never learned, from the textbook or from her. tries to immitate dr. warnar and fails miserably. even grades the workshops like a ****. dont even bother trying to ank a question she replies with another question instead of being helpful.
I took chem in high school and had the hardest teacher ever, and I think she was way easier compared to Reisner. Reisner knows her stuff, but she cant teach it very well, and tests are impossible. The tests are nothing like what she teaches, and chemskillbuilders suck. If you can get another teacher, I highly recommend it.
Umm yea... this class is hard.... VERY HARD.... IMPOSSIBLE...... tests are nowhere close to`what she or the book`teaches......`You need to`be a genius in chemistry just to get a C
this class is easy but requiresLOT of work... Go to class+do homework+ answer colored problems in book+ schaums outline of chem+ do not procrastinate = A... but you have to do all this to get an A.. otherwise you wont... i studied all night every day and finally got an A
Dr. Reisner is definitely a difficult professor, but she knows her stuff. She is helpful if you take the time to go to office hours- You just have to put the effort into the class.
Make sure to study chem EVERYDAY for at least a few hours. If you want your work ethic to improve then take this class, you'll be glad you did.
Reisner is a great teacher. She does expect some work out of us(her students) but its not unreasonable. Her tests are probably what most people dont like about her because they can be really. If do your work (or pull an all nighter like I do) you can do well enough on the tests. Reisner is fair and is very helpful to those who go to her for help
Just thinking about this class makes me want to shoot myself in the head. She babbles about the colors of chemistry for the whole first part of the semester. Exams are rediculously hard and she is hardly approachable. I went to literally every problem session and studied for hours. Passed the class, but this was a close fail. Not recommended.
Chemistry is hard and Dr. Reisner will make you work...which is not a bad thing. She really is a great professor and is extremely helpful when you go to her office hours. The key to success in the this class is to DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS and go see her with any questions. Dr. Reisner is one of my favorite professors on campus.
Dr. Reisner is a wonderful teacher. She expects you to do the work to earn your grades. If you go to her for help she is extremely helpful and really wants you to understand. To succeed you MUST do the BOOK PROBLEMS!!! Dr. Reisner is probably my favorite teachers that I have ever had!
i would never take another class taught by this lady. she knows what she's talking about yet isn't good at teaching it. she thinks test averages are amazing even if its like a 60. most of the people in the class failed every test. avoid at all costs.
Starting out in chem was strenuous and difficult. Eventually with a little effort i realized its nothing but being ahead and paying attention. You do have to work hard but obviously in any chem you will but Reisner is great and very helpful, take her to coffee and you'll understand how great she is!!
She's nice and really wants you to learn. There's never enough time in lecture to cover all the details, so make sure to read the book. Doing her released exams from past years are VERY helpful. Aris is a pain, but she did offer some extra credit ones in case you missed some. Go to her office hours if you need help, she enjoys helping you.
One of the most pretentious, conceited people I've ever met. I wanted to avoid taking Chem at JMU, but decided to get it over with. Mistake! When I asked for help, she made it seem like chemistry was my life and made me feel like I was stupid if I didn't know everything. Hate her and her ugly betty face.
I had to repeat 131 and had her both times. She really wants you to learn the material and is willing to help you when you need it. She loves what she teaches and wants you to love it too.
Dr Reisner is a great professor if you learn the way she does. The material is difficult and she uses a lot of math for explanations. On her tests she knows the answers that a person will put if they did something wrong, and those wrong answers are on there. No curving of tests. She knows the material very well.
I hated chemistry, still do as a matter of fact, but did not hate Reisner- she's an awesome professor! Looking back now, I know I could have done extremely well if I utilized everythying she offered. You got points for going to class, are offered practice exams, and extra credit aris. I am doing much better in CHEM132 due to Reisner's preparation!
Reisner is dedicated to teaching. She know's chemistry is difficult, especially 131 which is a basis for the rest of your chem education. Passionate about the subject, she wants you to learn it and have fun...(It does happen) Her schedule is definitely busier than an average college student and still manages to offer so many opportunities for help!
Prof Reisner earned a VB rating from our section. She's tough but fair.
Very nice and helpful. Unless you are very smart, it would be wise to go to office hrs at least once just to show her you are trying. Don't get discouraged it's a hard subject but she is very positive and encouraging. She tries very hard to make everyone happy. If you have a problem with her ask her about it and I'm sure she will try and meet your needs. Good teacher, people should not take chem 131 for just a science credit and not majoring in a science field. Take an easier chem class
She is so helpful. If you ask her a question she will work with you until you get it. As long as you read the prelabs the quizes are very easy.
Absolutely AWFUL. I would not recommend her at all. The tests are multiple choice; therefore not partial credit. I found her very unapproachable, and dreaded the class every minute I was there.
Great teacher, but this class is just hard anyway. Her tests are very difficult. She gives old exams to you and they are really easy. She's extremely helpful though. Master everything (PRACTICE IS KEY)
such a hard class! Tests are so difficult. She is a very nice and smart teacher; but terrible at teaching.
I didn't expect to go through this course with such a difficulty. I understood the material, but when it came to the tests, they were super difficult. I felt like each question was trying to trick me. However, she was really nice and tried to make classes somewhat enjoyable.
this class was so hard and took up SO much time, but she made me really want to learn because of how much she showed she cared. i went to office hours A LOT. if you go, she will LOVE you and do anything she can to help. she is very passionate about chemistry
Keep in mind that chemistry in general is a subject which will be confusing to most, but easy to grasp only if you PRACTICE. Prof. Reisner is probably like the 2nd best chem131 professor at JMU. Her tests are hard, and lecture can be boring/pointless, but she really does try to help your grade with lots of extra credit opportunities. Take her
If you fall behind early, brace yourself- it could be a long ride. Dr. Reisner is exceptionally helpful and will challenge you to the maximum. Tests were always tricky but she gives you practice tests that helped a lot. Comprehensively study for the final, it might make or break you. Going to her office hours pays major dividends.
Dr. Reisner knows chem is a hard subject and tries to help but normally falls flat. Your entire grade is based on the tests which is unfair and they are ridiculously hard. She does not curve even when more than half the class is failing. I went for extra help nearly every day and got a D in the class. I would drop this class if you can.
worked my ass off to get a B (the only B ive gotten at JMU (im pre-med)). Very helpful and clear and really is a great teacher. She jsut makes her tests sooo tricky and difficult. I would get 80's on the tests and kids would be in awe. If you need a high grade, do not take. If you want to learn, take.
I have taken chemistry up through Organic 2 and have a fairly extensive chem background. IF YOU TAKING CHEMISTRY FOR THE FIRST TIME, DO NOT TAKE IT WITH THIS WOMAN. Her teaching style sets you up for failure. She is one of the worst chem teachers and made me hate gen chem. Don't make the same mistake as me and take her if your trying to learn chem
She is sooo sweet. Yes some of the test were hart BUT it is Chemistry and this subject takes a lot on the students part to learn. her lectures were easy to follow and were extremely helpful when i didn't understand the textbook at points. the learn-smart is easy. you do need to go to class and engage in the "clicker" questions but its not that bad
I get that it's chemistry, but Reisner's tests were next to impossible. I would put days into studying for one exam and still do horribly. She does not test what she says in lecture, it's actually the opposite. Lots of exceptions, the practice quizzes don't help much either. Yeah, she's nice but I would never take her again. Avoid.
She will be interested in you and your grade if she knows that you are working hard. Go to her problem solving session, and (I cannot stress this enough) READ THE BOOK THOROUGHLY and do practice problems. She is extremely helpful in office hours. Her tests are hard, but that's because she wants you to know and understand exceptions to rules.
Dr. Reisner's test may be difficult but it's really the material that's difficult. She is always cheerful and passionate about chemistry even early in the morning. All lectures are recorded and posted so it's easy to go back over anything you missed.
Chem 131 was one of the harder classes I took at JMU. However Dr. Reisner was really helpful explaining content. I went to all her office hours, and that extra work paid off in chem 132.
Honestly, Dr. Reisner is agreat person who cares about all of her students and wants to see them succeed. In office hours she is extremely helpful and will spend as much time as you need to help you understand your questions. Chemistry in general is a hard subject, so the tests are hard, but she does drop one. If you have to take 131, take her!
Dr. Reisner is only one of the nicest and smartest professors I have had at JMU. She really wants you to succeed, but still wants you to understand the material. Her tests are kinda tough, but honestly going to office hours saved my ass. I would totally take her again.
This is a really tough class with a ton of material to cover in just one semester, you NEED to know that before you take this class to begin with. However, Dr. Reisners lectures are all clear and very focused, and she's always around phys/chem to help if you need it. Great teacher, really really hard class.
Professor is always happy which can get a little annoying. Tests are extremely tough, and without a solid background in chemistry they would be near impossible. Need to really truly know the material in order to do well. She records every class period and posts them on canvas incase you miss a day. No textbook required, her lectures provide all
Dr. Reisner is seriously the sweetest. She truly wants her students to succeed. She does do this once a week workshop thing which is pretty pointless but really easy. Her test are pretty tough, you definitely need to know your stuff. Just know you will never be bored in her class but it is a hard class.
Dr. Reisner is seriously so nice. But I do want to warn everybody, I just took the last exam before the final and looked over the class average of the exam.... For every exam that we have taken, (4 so far not including the final), the class average has not been above a 69%. Her tests are full of trick questions, she even admits it. Just be careful.
Reisner is such a great lady and helped me pass Chem 131. Of her test were not the hardest thing I've ever done then I would have gotten an A. She's so passionate about Chem and if you're not, switch to a different Chem. Best person in the Chem department just so, so, so, hard.
Reisner might seem unaccessible at first but if you go to office hours and talk to her she is always happy to help. Make sure you go to class because even though it's not mandatory the clicker grades can hurt you if you get zeros. 4 tests but she drops 1. They're all fairly easy if you study and do keep up in class.
Her class is tough. The exams are very tough--she makes you work for them. She takes teaching very seriously and is very open to questions.
This class is like a marathon where the finish line is a final you're not prepared for.
Nice lady, but when you ask questions she makes you have to work it out rather than actually helping (also can make you feel pretty dumb but not on purpose). You have to stay the entire time until you're done with the lab report, so by the end I was always drained. Very specific grading with sig-figs and units. The last lab was actually helpful.
First off, CHEM 131 is not an easy class and Reisners tests are certainly not the easiest. However, she genuinely wants her students to succeed, and is super helpful in office hours. I had trouble at the beginning of her class, but she helped me one-on-one to find a test taking strategy that worked for me.
Very sweet woman. The course however ruined my mental health. I have spent over 90 ours on Mindtap and it does not show in my grade WHATSOEVER. PASS sessions and tutoring are beyond mandatory to even pass this class. If you score bad on tests, you're screwed. This class stressed me out to the point that I ended up switching majors. Do not recommend
DOES NOT LECTURE EXPECTS ONLINE WORK TO TEACH YOU EVERYTHING. Makes you feel stupid when you ask for help with a problem, talks down to you. Told me multiple times when I asked about my grade "It doesn't matter I drop the lowest test grade". I would give her a zero if I could.
Records all of her lectures which is nice to go back over. 4 tests which count for 55% (drops lowest) of grade a final thats 30%. Hard, but if you put the time in, won't be that bad. She is very caring and wants to work with you. Also her A goes down to a 91.
I was not a fan at first, but then I began attending her sessions outside of class. She finds many ways to help explain different concepts and is very patient with you even if you have a bad attitude. Lecture is mainly a review of the mindtap, so as long as you keep up on the homework youll be fine. She genuinely cares and is very willing to help.
Dr. Reisner is a really nice professor, but going to her lectures doesn't help you learn anything. She goes through information way to fast and expects you to learn through homework problems on MindTap. She makes the toughest quizzes out of all the chem 131 professors and admits it.
Dr. Reisner really cares about chemistry and helping her students understand chemistry better. This class is extremely hard. The averages for almost all of the quizzes was between a 60-65. The lectures are not worth going to because they are very confusing.
Do not take this class expecting to learn anything in class, 95% of the learning has to be done on your own.
Dr. Reisner is the poster child of everything that is wrong with liberal arts universities. CHEM481 is a 1 credit seminar class that Dr. Reisner thinks is important enough to assign more work than my other 12 credits of class combined. I have lots of more relevant classes to my major that are swept under the rug to make time for her 1 credit class
She made a 1 credit class my most work involved class. Didn't learn anything relevant to my degree and did mostly busy work. Waste of time
I came into this class expecting to fail. I have never been good at chemistry or even science. However, after taking this class I fell in love with chemistry. Dr. Reisner and all of the other chem 131 professors worked so hard to make this course work online. There are many opportunities for help. You have to put in a lot of work, but you can do it
Dr. Reisner is a great lab instructor so if you get her for lab, you're in good hands! Clearly passionate about chemistry and she made me excited to come to lab each week. Super nice and wanted everyone to learn lots and have fun while doing it. She went above and beyond to make sure we understood material and set us up for success. Great choice!
This class takes an extreme amount of studying to succeed in, but it's possible. You will need to write down your notes for every unit. Mindtap is an online study tool in this class with some optional and some required parts. It is in your best interest to use the optional part to study because once the week is over, it will close.
Took this class online because of COVID and it went pretty well. Most of the content is self taught in my opinion, so make sure you do all the homework. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and she does give extra credit often.
Definitely very enthusiastic and knows what shes talking about. Good choice for chemistry
Dr. Reisner is one of the better professors for chemistry. She is accessible outside of the classroom and will answer any questions you have about the material. However, I would recommend focusing more on the lecture videos and not the MindTap material, as it will not show on your grade. "Focus on the lecture material" is my best advice!!
She was a good person, but I feel like she could have done better to go over material in class, since all lectures were recordings that you had to watch outside of class.
Dr. Reisner was very helpful and one of my favorite professors all semester. She was always happy to take time to explain something to you. During the course, we watched videos outside of class and then did group worksheets in class. As long as you put in the work, complete the Mindtap, and ask for help when you need it you should be okay.
Dr. Reisner is a good professor for this class. However, the pre-class lecture videos are vague and do not go over many examples. This is when office hours was really helpful. She does care for her students and brings in baked goods. The class was easier when going to office hours and putting in the work. Definitely not a class to slack off in!
Dr. Reisner is very caring, understanding, and friendly. Her pre-lecture videos are very vague which makes it harder to learn and don't include hard/ a lot of examples, but still asks the hard questions. Her office hours are a really big help. There are a lot of ways to improve your grade, however, the tests are hard. She has clear rubrics.
I LOVE Dr. Reisner! She's so sweet and offers great feedback on lab work. Lab instructions are very clear. Lab, in general, isn't too bad either. I would 100% take her again.
Dr. Reisner expects everyone to work hard and efficiently during lab, but she is so caring and helpful. It seems like a lot of work and can get overwhelming, but she will answer any of your questions with a smile and truly cares about her students.
She is an awesome professor, and I got to have her for 132L water, which was a pilot lab. We did a lot of work with dye and carbon, and most of the calculations are done by using Google Sheets and copying and pasting formulas( she will take off points if you don't). She was not a harsh grader as long as you put her grading criteria. Loved her!
SHE IS AMAZING!! She is so sweet and super accommodating to life situations. TAKE HER!!
Prof. Reisner is awesome - she's super sweet and accommodating. The labs can be a lot of work, but she provides great feedback and is always willing to help. Definitely use tools like Unstuckstudy to stay on top of the workload.
Dr. Reisner is so sweet I love her! You can have casual conversation and laugh w/ her, which I think is really great in a professor. She also really explains things well and you can tell she wants her students to actually understand what she's talking about (unlike SOME lab professors.......).
She is a wonderful professor who is very passionate about chemistry. She takes time for her students to ensure they understand the material clearly. The worksheets in class directly reflect the tests so attendance is important, but not required.
Tries to teach, but sadly doesn't do a good job at it at all. Not sure if she'll continue, but lecture videos are not supplements for an in class lecture. Not a bad person, just not the professor one would hope to get. I would wait a semester, maybe even year to get a different professor like Blumling.
Literally does not help you succeed in this class what so ever. The TA's are okay and if your group is mediocre, good luck in getting a good grade. The way to submit in class assignments is so extra and if you have to take this class for your major, good. luck.
