terrible, unhelpful, unorganized, if you want to make a C you must read the entire book...plus outside reading sources
No Comments
Horrible. Expects way too much from the student. Covers way too much material, way too fast. Student is responsible for all material in book (even if not covered in class), along with tons of outside reading. No test review, and tests are overly detailed.
SHE WAS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. SHE FAILED ME AND WHEN I TOOK THE CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT TEACHER I MADE A B WITH HALF THE EFFORT. SHE EXPECTED YOU TO ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING AND TALKED TO YOU LIKE YOU WERE STUPID IF YOU EVER HAD A QUESTION.
She is a very fair, clear teacher who actually cares whether her students do well or not.if you are looking for a teacher who makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, this class is not for you, since she is pretty uptight. she writes her own tests.i got 102 on the first test, in Martha Brown's class i had a 66 on the 1st before i dropped it.
She is a very difficult teacher, but everyone that has done well in her class traditionally go on to do very well in their other higher level bio classes. Most ppl that dont do well are stupid/lazy and thats WHY they dont do well.
she was not what i expected. she is very difficult and cover too much material. i will never take her for anything else. she allows you to ask questions and explains, but teaches on a honors level which makes it hard to comprehend.
WOW!!!!! This is the meanest, most obnoxious, and grumpiest professor ever. this lady never smiles and always has a funky attitude. she teaches okay, but her tests are way too detailed and thorough. Be careful and make sure you study exact details when taking her tests.
very nonchalant and grumpy. i studied for this lady class everyday and still made a D in the class. the test were very specific you had to know everything thoroughly about whatever was in the book. overall, i learned a lot but obviously not enough to pass the class
Dr. Taller is NOT a typical UofM professor. This was the first college level course I have taken since I have been in school. A's are hard to come by in her class. You HAVE to study all deatils. He lectures are fast paced and she does not like to slow down. However, at the end of the semester she is fair. You WILL leave her class knowing Bio.
Very hard, intimidating, mean, grades unfairly, tests you on stuff she didn't lecture you on.
Dr. Taller is focused on material that is harder than most of what other general biol teachers take the time to teach but when you start taking biochemistry or micro/other higher end biology classes you will be glad you had Dr. taller she teaches alot of important stuff you will need to know.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!!!

Everyone makes her out to be the bad guy. She's very passionate about Biology and wants you to be too. She rewards effort and if you study the quizes on line and keep up the reading you will be fine. If you are looking to learn, take her. If not DO NOT TAKE her for an easy grade YOU HAVE TO WOEK FOR IT!
Taller is a very difficult teacher. her tests are way too detailed and she is just plain mean when it comes to the questions she asks. it is like she does not want you to do well on the tests. does not take role but gives pop quizzes. i would not take her again
THIS CLASS WAS HARD. I FAILED THE FIRST TWO TESTS WITH AN F. I STUDIED HARD AND MADE A C ON THE 3RD TEST! I ENDED UP WITH A C- IN THE CLASS! IT WAY A MIRACLE FROM GOD THOUGH!
Honestly, she's pretty tough and isn't the warmest and friendliest professor you'll ever have. However, she is an excellent teacher. You'll leave each test feeling like an idiot no matter how hard you studied. However, she curves at the end. My tips: attend the study sessions and MAKE SURE SHE KNOWS YOUR NAME. I think this may help with the curve.
I had Dr. Taller when I was a freshman. I am a junior now and to this day I thank God that I had her for Biology 1. I feel like I am way ahead of the game compared to my other classmates. She is very detailed but people act like thats a bad thing. Trust me, if your a Biology major you need to take her, she doesnt make a bad advisor either.
She may not be the warmest teacher on campus, but she is GOOD. She knows her subject and yes she may be very detailed, but I learned a lot. Her tests may be hard, but she ALWAYS curves. Attend everyday, make sure you study and PAY ATTENTION!!! She uses powerpoints which were a lifesaver for me. Probably one of my favorite professors I've had.
In my class of 60 the tests were all consistently F's. On the 3rd test, the range of grades was 86 to low teens, so out of 60 people in the class, no one studied hard enough to get an A. Is it just me or does that say something about what kind of useless teacher she is? I learned absolutely nothing from this teacher!
A complete pain in the rear(+ I like sciences) I have trouble just getting what she says down on paper because she covers so much material in every sentence. (and yes she expects you to remember everything) Important concepts are not "highlighted" in class, and the tests are impossible to study for. This class should be worth 12 credit hours.
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVERY!!!! YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS, SO THEREFORE I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS AT ALL TAKE IT FROM A PROFESSOR WHO WILL AT LEAST TRY TO HELP YOU OR TAKE IT AT SOUTHWEST.
the worst teacher at the university of memphis by far! hell would freeze before that woman acted like she cared about her students passing. Never in my life have a struggled so hard...I hated every moment I was there! DO NOT TAKE HER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE..
she is an extremely hard teacher.. i have already taken some upper division science classes and her freshman bio class was harder than all of those.. she is not helpful if you are confused and she makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question in class... there was a 60% fail rate in this class... i would suggest her to no one!!

She doesn't make her class easy. She does, however, present the material clearly, podcast her lectures, put the powerpoints online, and give you a study guide that tells you what pages to read thoroughly (and skim) in the book. The tests are straightforward, but hard. I knew the material very well and I still felt that the tests were tough.
worst teacher ever. she made me cry. there is really nothing good that i can say about her.. I failed the first test with a 40 and studied hard to get in the 60s. i think she curved it 2 letter grades at the end because i thought i was going to have an F or low D and i ended up with a low C. it was hell.
I'm taking this class as we speak. I wish I would of checked this out first. Attendance is not mandatory, but I've gone to every class and got killed in the first exam. I was in the top 15% of the school. Not any more. She is extremely rude and could care less if your going under.
I took this class and withdrew because I failed the first test horribly. I studied my butt off and bombed it. If you are going to take this class make sure you have plenty of time to devote to it. She is head of the bio department and takes bio serious. Tests are mulitple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and matching. Good luck.
The Class is interesting but if you dont want to work hard you will not pass!
Seriously one of the worst teachers EVER. She knows what she's talking about but goes so fast that you don't really get it. She gives you many studying resources, but no matter how hard you study, A's are pretty much impossible. The day of the final not only did she give the final, but also the last test. Worst idea EVER
Very Hard Class! But if you study the information, read the book and go to class youll do good. Attendance is not mandatory but youll miss the extra credit quizes if you miss class. She also curves on every test ten points. Not an easy class, but does prepare you for future biology classes.
She is a terrible teacher. She does not care whether or not the students learn. Also, i studied for this class more than enough to do well on her tests. there were students in the class who had taken biochem and other upperlevel biology and they had a difficult time passing her tests. RUN THE OTHER WAY!!
Worst teacher EVER. Simple as that.
Taller is by far the worst professor i've had since i have been at the university, she does not care if you learn the material. Her personality is really bad and her test failed 50% of the class, extra credit is useless b/c if you dnt get it right it does not count and if it does count it wouldnt matter b/c you will still get an F!! RUNNN 4 ur Life
Dr. Taller is a very respectable teacher. she is tough but that is too ensure that people who want to be "Doctors" really want to be and are mentally capable of attending a professional school. If you fail then you definitely weren't. I got an A it was a lot of work but i did it.
HORRIBLE!!!! I have a D average after the first two exams. You do not get to go over the exam after it has been graded and you can only veiw them in her office. SHE MAKES EVERYTHING EXTREMELY HARD!!!!!!!
She's not the nicest person in the world that's for sure but she's the best bio one teacher. I loved her class and got an A. You will study alot but get over it. If you want to be a science major it just gets harder so deal with it. I recommend her to anyone who's willing to actually do the work she asks. Great prof.
DO NOT-I REPEAT- DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. She talks extremely fast and gives soooo much info. This is a general Biology class and she teaches as if its an honors course or grad class. She is more concerned with making more than one form of the same exam oppose to being worried if the students are comprehending.I think she honestly tries to fail us
She is a little on the tough side, but after taking her class last sem I can tell you anything you want to know about biology. I studied and went to class not to miss the 10 pt bonus quizzes and I got an A+. Excellent teacher if you want to go into pre-health.
Tests are a little on the tough side, but after taking her class last sem I can tell you anything you want to know about biology. Go to SI meetings. I studied and went to class not to miss the 10 pt bonus quizzes and I got an A+. Excellent teacher if you are pre-health.
Very difficult tests, but she gives extra credit quiz opportunities before each test as well as a 10 point curve added to every test. (that's 22 extra points added if you get all the quiz right) Difficult class, but if you stay on top of everything you will pass. The tests consist of multiple choice, short answer, and matching.
Good teacher, my first test I failed horribly. Just stick with it and it becomes easier. Extra credit a life saver, attendance isn't a must but that's the only way you will receive the extra credit points. Powerpoints useful, the book not so much. Overall she is a good teacher, slightly boring but you will learn alot about biology.
dont do it
One of my favorite teachers, ever.
I've never had a class that had a more disorganized method of instruction. I've never had a teacher that put more material on exams that we didn't cover, and I've never had a class where my grades where so far below my level of understanding of the material. I would avoid taking this professor at all costs. She has an attitude.
You have to learn by yourself! it is just so bad. I don't even know where to start. It feels like no matter how hard you tried. You are gonna fail. Unless, you are a natural genius!
This is a serious course. You have to take good notes and study each night. If you do the work you will learn a lot. Do not take if you came to college for an easy ride.
I would advise anyone who is not used to disorganization and applied learning against this course. You have to learn the material yourself and half of the test is applied learning that will blindside you. MOST disorganized class ive ever taken.
HORRIBLE DO NOT EVER TAKE!!! This teacher will make you quit biology FOREVER!!! She blurts as many facts as she possibly can in one hour and then gives you a test on something completely different. Other biology teachers will have open discussions about principles allowing you to understand the concepts, Taller does not care... GET OUT FAST!!!
I advise anyone who really loves bio to not take this course. Take it anywhere else but here. Biology is a hard course as it is, you have to put a lot of time and effort into studying every night. You do not need a professor that makes it worse. This class was so disorganized and this prof was just ridiculous.
She made us take our last exam along with our final, on the same day. She gives us online quizzes that are 20 questions yet we have 18 min to complete them. That's less than a min per question. She could atleast give 20 min. Her exams are ridiculous. More than one answer is correct. You can study and go in feeling confident but after cry.
My favorite teacher, teaches you complex thinking, very important in life and med school! Kids are lazy and have an entitlement issue. Should only blame themselves for failing. Do the work, these classes are not supposed to be easy. Study ahead of time, don't cram at the last minute and read! Think don't just memorize. Learned a lot in this class!
Dr. Taller is one of my favorite professors. If you are a Biology major, take her. You learn so much. If you're not ready to dedicate your time to learning then forget it. I studied hard and I got a B. I can tell you anything you want to know about Biology 1.
I am a non-traditional student in my late 30s, already have a bba and mba but I returned to take the sciences in hope of getting in to med school. Is she "hard" well, yes. But if you are trying to get into med school, dental school etc that is a GOOD thing!! I studied a lot, got an "A" and I learned a lot. She makes you work for it, enough said.
Dr. Taller is very hard. However, if you study and pay attention, her teaching style will benefit you greatly. She is very knowledgeable and clear. Those that denounce her simply have trouble studying.
Dr. Taller was a fantastic professor. Very hard. I can tell you anything you want to know about Biology 1. People give her a bad wrap because they don't want to study or they shouldn't be majoring in the sciences.
Her tests are really confusing and she seemed to be annoyed whenever someone had a question about the material. I had to drop because I couldn't deal with her anymore. Apparently her students do better on entrance exams for professional schools, but I still suggest taking Dr. Coons or going to a community college if you want a fair shot of passing.
She isn't the most warm person, but she does want you to pass. She doesn't tolerate talking or eating in class and will call you out. She will ask you questions in class too. Her class takes a lot of hard work and studying. Read the content before classes. Go to class. Practice questions and review the content. If you do the work you will do fine
Dr. Taller is extremely intelligent and knows vast information about biology. However, she can be asinine towards her students. She does not joke around, frankly I do not believe a teacher should make class a party. But! She could use more people skills. You will be afraid to ask her questions and she may make you feel like an idiot BUT DO IT.
I think a student can do well in her class, if they are almost a genius. I'll tell anyone, I'm a 3.8gpa type of student that studied very hard for her class and still got a D, it was just soooo!!! freakin hard.
Her class is very difficult, even with hours of studying. Be the student that you're SUPPOSED to be and you can make an A. Staying consistent with your studying is essential. She comes across as cold, but she has a soul -- I promise. She has a shield up and will push you very hard. You will thank her in the long run.
Dr. Taller is a tough teacher and is hard to ask questions to I received a B in the course but that was due to numerous hours of studying and SI she makes you feel dumb when asking questions so take notes and save yourself the embarrassment. DO the homework and practice exams!
This class consumes you. If you're willing to study 2-3 hours per night throughout the entire semester, you MAY be okay. Exams are extremely hard and all averages of tests are between 40-50. I am a 4.0 student and I've never struggled so much in my life. 4th exam and final in same class period. If you don't make above a 50 on final, you fail.
I'm a 3.5 student, and I made an A in her class, and it was a well-earned one. It just goes to show that even those who don't have straight A's can do well in this class. I would recommend the study guide and the workbook, as well as a second textbook, and do NOT wait till the last minute to study, or you will fail.
Ok, so everybody hates her. I think she likes to make people REALLY worry about their grades. She knows her stuff, but her tests are nearly impossible to make above a B on. I had a 73 test average (including the 55 on the last test.. ugh) and I made an A. You'll learn a lot, but your numerical grades definitely won't reflect that.
taking now. I've had 3 bio courses , so I feel I have a pretty good foundation. After reading these ratings, I knew I had to study my butt off. I even studied MCAT bio s because she claims her class will prepare us for it. She words questions weird the MC answers are very similar. I'm certain that I failed this week's examExam 1but never again
Difficult tests but it makes you learn the material. Provides good foundation for further bio classes. Dr. Taller isn't going to baby you, but is clear about her expectations and what will be on the tests. Go to SI and study from her lectures.
Unnecessarily spiteful woman. Just rude!!! acts as if the whole world revolves around her class. I understand that shes passionate but she seem to fail to understand that people have lives and other classes that are just as important as hers.
Dr. Taller is a smart woman but she doesn't teach well.I had an undergrad biology class with her. She teaches as if it were a graduate class. She answers questions that students ask as if it were wasting her time, which is why no one ever asked questions. If you have to take her, make sure you study biology beforehand. She is tough and unsympathetic.
She clearly knows what she's doing and loves Biology, but man is she a crappy teacher. She seems to hate questions and is kind of mean to students. I try to give teachers the benefit of the doubt but she takes the non-majors biology class way too seriously. Avoid her if you don't want biology as a major.
She's not really nice, doesn't care, rude. I mainly learned everything by myself. Took a ton of notes from the book. Basically need to know it front and back to pass.
She's very difficult and her tests will not reflect what you went over in class. Get ready for tremendous amounts of work and little to no feedback. If possible take biology somewhere else. Not taller!
Taking Taller's class will not be easy. But guess what? Science is not a super easy subject. Taller prepares you for the real world, especially if you are a science major. Nothing is spoon fed to you and I had to learn that really quick. I ended up making a B in the class, and I had to really work for it.
Dr. Taller is by far one of the worst professors on this campus. She does not care for her students and acts as if everyone knows biology. Her exams are impossible and have nothing to do with the powerpoint slides. She is extremely rude and does not reply back to emails at all. I am a biology major and because of her, I might change it. AVOID
The hardest class I've taken. Dr. Taller is actually a fantastic woman despite what people say. She does care about her students but isn't going to baby you. Biology is tough. There's a lot to it, and to get through a bio major in 4 years, you have to cram it so it's a lot of material to learn at once. Study hard and ask questions. You'll do fine.
The hardest class I ever took. Her tests are impossible. She should make study guides for us if she's going to be this difficult.
Definitely take her during the summer. She's a lot more laid back and it helps during tests that all the work is relatively fresh. Take good notes from connect and you'll do fine.
The test had nothing to do with the slides, she also goes through the slides too quickly. The tests have little to do with the homework and quite frankly it may be best to just read the book. She just stared at me while i was taking a test while standing next to me for no reason at one point. Despite it being a waste you have to attend class
Taller prepares students for upper division and professional school. She gives you objectives (study guides);I filled it out&studied them &HW& did above average on every test. If the average is low, she will give a curve in order to make a better average. if you go in her office hours she is a completly diff person but helps you clarify things.
The lectures have NOTHING TO do with tests. She will tell you not to read the book because she knows better. SHE DOESN'T. READ THE BOOK. The lectures and slides are a waste of time. She goes too fast to write them down anyway
Read the book. Find online quizzes by the bookmaker. Make your own notes. Some of the test questions are just, ugh. Sometimes there is more than one possible answer, chose the best one. Be sure to do all of the learnsmarts, quizzes, and try your best in the participation sections of class.
Took general biology one with Dr. Taller and made an A fall 2016. Super easy, but then again I am a chem major. If you're a bio major or haven't had science classes you could experience some issues, but the caliber is not difficult for chem majors. Seriously, it's a cake walk.
The course is split between four professors and Taller's sequence is definitely the hardest. While she is tough, she's also fair. She's also there to help anyone who needs it. Study and understand how to apply the material; make sure to do your best on the HW, practice exams, and participation as that could be the difference between an A and C.
It's a tight class, that's a given. However, Dr. Taller always provided herself for help at anytime. The grades were always in the fail category. Your tests are 75% of the final grade. However, you need do your best with the other categories as well. Every surgery and opportunity for bonus, take them. I should have gotten a D, received a B.
Difficult
I took her in the summer. Exams are ridiculously difficult. She expects you to know the book cover to cover. Exam class average was always an "F". You'd think she'd do something to help but she doesn't care. The curve and online work saved us. I should have gotten a "D". Don't take her if you don't have to.
She is absolutely terrible. She will lecture on one thing and then test you over another. It drove me crazy. I would study so hard for her tests, and I would get to the test and just be completely lost. She doesn't test you over what is in the lecture. So get ready to read because you're going to have to teach yourself.
so hard
I am taking this as a summer course, and I regret it. Clicker questions that she puts up are made to trick you and her tests are the same way. The usual average is just above a 50. The homework isn't bad but she doesn't seem happy to answer questions at all and makes you feel dumb for asking them. Have fun and good luck in your first biology class.
Taller comes across as gruff and not cuddly. I understand this since her job is basically destroyer of dreams. However, she's very clear about expectations. She teaches to what would be the national norm. BIOL 1120 is much tougher and most people get 1 letter grade lower than Taller's class. Decent lecturer, the gruffness makes her stick.
I had Taller for Micro. It was a tough class and she wants to challenge you, but it is possible to get an A. Be prepared to study for this class. If not, you will get a C or below. Taller was willing to help outside of class if I ever had questions. She comes off as mean in class, but if you go to her office hours she's not as bad.
One of those teachers you don't enjoy in the moment but do afterwards. Her breakdown of the class was fantastic.
Please do not take this professor. She only teaches the basics of Biology, yet tests you on a professional level. She often says the textbook and Google are wrong, only she is right. This will only confuse you further. She is the worst professor at the University of Memphis.
So there are 4 professors but Taller is over the whole thing ! She makes all the test. They teach the basics of bio but will test you on a PhD level.. but its only preparing you for whats ahead. So please study hard! When she tell you to study bio 5-6 hours a day, TRY TO AT LEAST DO at least 4 hours a day!
Difficult but doable as long as you go to class and are willing to put in the time to read the textbook, review the lecture slides, and finish the online assignments. This class prepared me well for more advanced science classes in the future. Dr. Taller is very nice and gives helpful feedback during exam review sessions and office hours.
you MUST STUDY FOR HOURS EVERYDAY
Imagine someone being dragged out of bed and handed a bunch of biology slides. That's Taller. I'm only here to help someone in the future. Don't take her if you don't have to. I'm not speaking out of anger, frustration, or even spite. I'm speaking from my heart. If you have no choice, then expect to be stressed out. If you aren't enough already.
I highly recommend not to take this course unless you want a lot of work, difficult test that don't relate to the given power points, and basically teaching yourself. She will show know sympathy and this course is taught at PhD level especially the test that are given. So, if you have to take the course, take it at another college:)
Dr. Taller was the worst professor/teacher I have ever encountered. I read these ratings before taking her class and I did not take them as seriously as I should have. There are a FEW students who pass her class with no problems but I promise you, the majority of students has a very difficult time in this class including me and I am a A+ student.
I don't know why as a CS major im required to take some of these course. Participation is a must. Tests are tough. Very easy to fall behind. Not a great teacher for non biology/chem majors.
Feel like clearing the air regarding Dr. Taller. 10 question assignments and quiz weekly, Class participation questions, 3 tests with 3rd test,Final combined. Questions are MCAT level multiple choice meaning you need to understand the WHY of a process. Um, that's what UD biology is supposed to be, so study that way. Grad-school prep class.
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken by the absolute worst professor I have ever taken . She teaches intro bio at a PhD level and is intent on failing you. Those people on here saying " I passed with an A" and "It so easy" take that with a grain of salt. You should have to depend on a curve to pass. Please take elsewhere. Sorry.
Lets Be Real I Honestly Dont Even Know Why This Woman Has A Job. Dr. Taller Is By Far One Of The Worst Teachers Ever! Her Lectures Are Confusing, & She Test On A PhD Level. Taller is One Of Those People Who say Read the Text & Say The Text Is Wrong & She Is Right. They Need To Add More Professors To Teach This Course. I DONT RECOMMEND HER !
Terrible. I took this course TWICE, once with an F and now with a D. I lost my opportunity to be a Biology Major because of Taller's ill style of teaching. She doesn't seem to happy with her job and if you ask her a question she makes you feel dumb. U of M would have more people finishing a bio degree if she wasn't teaching Bio 1.
Dr. Taller is a great teacher. Her rating are so low because she teaches Bio 1 for majors, which is designed to be a weed out class. If you cant handle her tests and her class then biology is probably not the way to go (I.e. these are MCAT level questions). Her class requires lots of study time, so dont take it thinking it will be easy!
She requires info in class to be memorized the day its tought. Homework assignments for each chapter, 40 indepth questions, are due the day before we cover its material in class. Daily questions count torwards participation grade, however, you must get them right for them to count. Her tests are full of questions with multiple right answers.
Horrible professor. Only got an A bc I did all the extra credit and the curve was ridiculous. My exam scores ranged from 20's-70's. Despite getting an A, I can honestly say I didn't learn a thing. Asked for help on a few occasions, and Taller made no effort to answer them and essentially told me they were stupid questions. Disappointment to U of M.
Grades us on past exams (which we have no access to review for reference & for study guide use). Has multiple powerpoints that include no information thats included on tests. She doesnt want to see people succeed, bc she never helps or answers questions just tells us to refer back to the book. & just overall a helpless professor.
The professor is very strict which is expected at this level. The professor was not personable. At this level, I believe feeling comfortable talking to the instructor is a must. On top of that, the professor would oftentimes have curt responses. The professor's in class feedback was not constructive and did not induce a learning environment.
