You might as well tech yourself, but the book and enjoy the ride. She teaches directly from the book, the draw back is....she doesnt simplify much! She is very muffled when she speaks and i dont believe she is very clear!
I used to be interested in Anatomy & Phsyiology... this woman puts us to sleep... Tru to take this course somewhere else and transfer credits...No use going to class
Such a sweeeet lady! Her lectures are not boring, the only problem is that she goes kind of fast and you have to take the notes yourself. Its not sooo bad... but you just have to be paying attention the whole time. She is really concerned about wanting her students to do well! Tests are not too hard, but you have to know the concepts well!!
I agree that she is a sweet woman. However, I don't think she should be teaching because she does not teach! She stands there and spits out information so fast you can't rely on the notes from class. She does not write notes during class which makes it hard. Try to pair up with someone if you do take the class...and beware because its very boring!
She's a nice woman, but her lecturing was somewhat mediocre. You can pretty much read the book and do well on the exams. For the most part, this class wasn't too bad, but you'll have to study if you want a good grade.
This women is a great teacher. Her tests come directly from her lectures word for word.
Awesome teacher!! I loved talking to her outside of class!! Shes a total sweet heart!!
If you go to class and take thorough notes (you have to write really fast) you'll never have to open the textbook. Her exams are based ONLY on what she covers in lecture, if you study that you can ace the exams. She's extremely helpful, if you have trouble be sure to go to her office. She's very sweet and wants her students to excel!
super sweet, nice lady. Tests based on class lecture entirely. However, she called out of class sick 2x, meaning we've had to rush like crazy to get material done & have skiped over material that is important, not to mention interesting. If I'm paying for a class and schedule my day so I can be there, I expect the teacher to be, too!
Does a really good traditional lecture, you should write down everyting you can because it's an overhead, not a Powerpoint. Most test questions are from the lecture. This class might be tough for someone who hasn't taken much biology yet. No cumulative final, which takes a lot of stress out of the class!
Overall easy class. exams come completely from lecture. she sometimes gets a little carried away and talks wicked fast but will slow down if you ask her to. she's really fair, too. i loved her.
She's a really nice lady who talks extremely fast so you have to learn to take really fast notes. The exams are multiple choice and true/falses which all reflect solely on what she lectures. Show up for class and study your notes, and you'll be good.
EXTREME GOOD
Eh... She can be the devil because she's so unorganized in her note-giving abilities but she's really nice and will always be there to help if you need it. Her tests are really easy as long as you study. I didn't mind her.
She is a very nice lady. She is definitely an easy professor. She just writes down notes all class, you go home and copy them to an outline because the way she gives them is super unorganized. That's basically it. All of the questions on her tests are directly from her notes. Do NOT buy the book. Her style is easy but surprisingly I remember a lot

She is a VERY nice lady. Her tests are from notes only but I found them very tricky. They are multiple choice with very detailed questions. I didn't like that most questions were A & B, A or B, A, B & C, 2 of the above, none of the above, etc. type questions. It requires allot of detail knowledge even if you know the material.
She is by far the best professor I have had at URI. Her teaching style is great she breaks everything down really well, and helps you understand things that are confusing. She tests you on exactly what she teaches, and on top of it all is one of the nicest people I have met. Amazing professor.
This professor is one of the best professors i had taken. attendance is not mandatory but show up and get her notes because everything will be on her exam i did fine without the book. she is very helpful and sometimes gives answers out on her exams
I enjoyed this class. Lecture goes really fast because she talks 100000 mph. Hard to catch up if you miss lecture. She only tests you on what she says in class, no textbook at all. interesting and tests werent too bad
Great Teacher. Class is surprisingly not as easy as anatomy. Textbook use can clarify lecture notes since she jumps all over the place. Goes through a lot in lecture but notes are straight foward. Tests are basic although the answer choices are tricky. No extra Credit. Lab is the easiest A.
Great Professor, She bends over backwards to help you understand. Go to her office hours it will be very beneficial. Class is not easier than Anatomy.
I love her teaching style - she breaks everything down for you and clarifies everything for you when you ask. Always go to class, because she only tests you on what she teaches. The tests can be worded funny, so just study alot. Its def easier than anatomy and lab is an easy A. I never even opened my book for this class and did fine.
Unpredictable teaching style. Teaches at a rapid fire pace. No powerpoints or anything to follow along with, just overheads with figures from book. Has an outline, but doesn't remotely follow it most days. When she does write on the board, she writes key words sporadically. Only tests on whats says in class but, have to learn everything from book.
Very good professor and nice person. Class moves at a reasonable pace. All exam material comes directly from lecture. 3 pretty easy multiple choice exams. Go to class and take good notes and you'll do fine on exams.
A pretty easy class. Tests straight from lecture. Write down everything she says, and don't bother with the textbook. A little scattered at times, but as long as you go to class and pay attention you'll pass.
Pretty easy class. Tests only on lecture notes and gets through very little detailed material in a class time. If genuinely interested in Biology, read the book and teach yourself. If simply taking the class to get through major requirements, go to class, take notes, and study those notes for tests. If tests become standardized you're screwed.
Her class is pretty straight forward. She gives you sufficient information in her power points and lecture as to what will be on the test. However, the tests can be tricky. You won't need to read the book as long as you show up, pay attention and take pretty good notes. Overall, not a bad lady/class.
She is really nice. All her tests come straight from her notes. She tries to keep things interesting. Really approachable and breaks things down, she tends to not move on until everyone is clear on what she is saying.
I had a terrible experience with this class. I received an F the first time taking it because the teaching staff lost my final exam. I was not give any chance to retake the test. Instead, I had to retake the class! Not very cool. She is a nice lady, but she is not technologically savvy. This hinders her ability to communicate with students.
Very nice lady and very approachable if you have questions. She is very unorganized and is technologically impaired. She is all over the place with the information and is not very good at presenting the material. Your best bet is to record the lectures because you will have problems keeping up and taking decent notes in her class.
Terrible at communicating with students. She messes up her grading constantly, so check your exams. Another professor writes her exams now because her old exams were too easy, and now they are ridiculously hard. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS. She doesn't know how to teach; she doesn't finish sentences and she uses words that don't exist. WORST TEACHER EVER.
Very nice woman. Awful class. She doesn't return email and may cancel class without notice (bad if you commute). Powerpoints are often one or two words, so they're no help for studying or note taking. Exams are really insconsistent. One is hard, the next is easy. I got a better grade by not going to class and reading at home.
BVS is very unclear and bases her exams on her class notes making it vary hard to pass since she jumps from topic to topic in lecture and it is very hard to keep up. suggest taking notes then using your book to look up the topics discussed.
Definitely did not know how to stay on topic. She jumps from topic to topic and it is very hard to keep up with notes. She does not follow the syllabus. My recommendation is if you take this course, show up to class and write down as many things as possible and go in the book and read over the things went over in class. She is not clear at all.
I loved this professor. She can be sort of an airhead and jumps around from topic to topic a lot but as long as you take good notes youll be fine. She gives study guides that have exactly what will be on the exams, thanks to these i never failed an exam. She's very nice and always willing to help. Read the book, take good notes, and you'll be fine.
Babs is so funny. She's kind of crazy but just take good notes and you'll be fine. She gives out test questions and her study guides are helpful. Posts all of the lecture slides on Sakai so don't worry about missing a few classes. The only days the entire class is there are exam days. Highly recommend this teacher for an easy A.
Class was extremely easy, just take notes (if you can keep up with her sometimes confusing lecture style) I learned a LOT in this class. Not in great detail, but it was enough for what this class was supposed to teach. Embrace her crazy, she really is a sweet lady.
Her exams come straight from her lectures, so I would recommend going to class and writing down everything she says. She jumps around a lot, but as long as you take notes you won't have trouble on exams. I didn't even buy a book and got an easy A in the class.
Entire powerpoint for all year was online. She also gave detailed study outlines for every test. Dropped the lowest test grade and 2 lowest online assignments. Not very easy to understand and moves quickly through material.
Good teacher who is willing to help her students. If you have questions, ask her. She's all over the place sometimes but just keep up with lectures and read over the book to ensure a good grade and clear things up. Exams are based off of lectures so attend the class. She gives detailed study guides, use it. Put in the effort and it'll pay off.
She is a nice professor, but her lectures are all over the place. She is alot more helpful if you take the time to ask her questions in person. The exams are easy, all questions are directly from her notes. Don't bother buying the book, you never need to use it. The lab is also fun and easy.
This class is super easy as long as you attend the lectures! She is so nice and a really good teacher. She words her exams in a very easy way. Just pay attention in class and you'll do great! The lab is very fun and easy too!
The study guides make the tests seem like they'll be impossible but they're actually easy. Just go to class as often as possible and use the book/notes to answer study guide. If you can fill out the study guide you'll probably get at least a B-
Show up, take notes, pay attention, and you'll get an A. Her class is easy. She's definitely a space case, but a pretty nice lady. If her section is available, take it. Even though it's early it's an easy A.
She's a nice lady. go tot lecture and Si sessions and you will get an A. doesnt require a lot of effort.
Great Teacher, find it hard to understand how people fail her class.
Not sure how anyone could fail her class. Very straightforward. Go to lectures, take down what she says (she talks slow and clear, repeating multiple times), study, and you'll do fine. Don't bother with the book, I never opened mine. Fantastic woman and is VERY helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed the class!
She is very interesting and knows her stuff. Lectures are sometimes a little confusing but if you take notes and study you'll do great on the exam. Also, she is very willing to help and explain stuff during office hours. I highly recommend her!
It's really necessary to actually pay attention in class. If you zone out for 2 minutes, you'll be confused coming back. She always tries to draw things out, but her drawings aren't clear. She's really sweet at office hours. Overall I expected the class to be really easy, but it wasn't.
Absolutely loved Van Sciver and the class. I took bio in high school and didn't really like it or do well in it. However, Van Sciver made it easy to pay attention and easy to learn. She does have her annoying one word slides, but if you listen to what she says over what is on the powerpoint you'll be fine. I really recommend taking this with her.
She is super sweet & very good at teaching. You HAVE to go to class in order to do well. She uses slides with just titles & you take notes based on her lecture. She's clear about all topics & even her drawings make sense. Didn't need the book at all so don't buy it. The subject is hard but she makes it understandable to everyone. Loved her!
Tests are word-for-word from lectures. Take notes and you'll get an A. Her study guide is a godsend if you do plan on skipping.
BVS is a really caring professor who is passionate about physiology. You can tell that she wants you to do well and her study guides are excellent practice for her exams. She's also approachable if you have questions. You have to go to class to get notes which aren't provided on the slides. Exams are straightforward and she drops the lowest one.
Professor Van Sciver is very easy and is very clear in lectures. GO to lecture and GO to the SI units and you will get an A in the class. Her exams are based on the lectures and she tells you everything that is going to be on the exam by the study guide. Do not buy the book, you will never use it.
Professor Van Sciver is your typical adorable biology teacher. She is so passionate about what she does. Her test questions literally come right from her lectures. If you keep up and pay attention during lectures you can do well. She builds on previous material, so keep up with vocab terms!! I absolutely loved her and would definitely recommend her
BVS gives clear lectures and will often give you exam questions directly in class. She is very approachable and wants you to succeed. Although it was an 8am, it was bearable because she keeps you engaged and is humorous throughout class. Notes are important because her powerpoints don't have much information.
I really enjoyed Van Sciver's class, she's a really sweet lady, and always available to give help when needed.
Van Sciver is a cute little lady and teaches physiology quite well. She keeps you intrigued with her side-notes and drawings on the overhead projector. She uses an in-class attendance taker which asks you questions so it is pretty important to attend the lectures. The exams are directly from the power point. An easy A if you put in the effort.
her class is so boring, she is the most unorganized professor i have ever met, did not learn one thing this semester
I took physiology with this professor. She is extremely unorganized and is not familiar with the technology that she chooses to use. She randomly puts up assignments and there is absolutely no structure. Her power points often only have one word per slide so you cannot study off of them. You have to go to class, however she is very boring.
BVS was a pretty good professor. Lectures were boring as hell and her powerpoints don't give much info but if you go to class and take notes you will be fine. her study guides are literally the test. Easy A if you do the online homework and do her study guides
shes nice and all but she repeats things that aren't important and she goes off on irrelevant tangents. All the information you need comes from her lectures so if you don't write fast enough or don't pay attention 100% of the time you miss stuff and now you can't study it. I only got by on old exams that people gave me cause she reuses questions
Sweet ol' Barb. She's a GREAT lady, but an awful speaker. Her voice sounds similar to that of a bored baby, and she is extremely unorganized. Nothing is on her powerpoint slides except for the titles, so go to class and STAY AWAKE. It's manageable to pass the class even if you're totally lost in lecture because all of the kids have her old exams.
I loved Barbara she was really a nice lady and was always willing to help. Although her class is usually taught early its so worth having her. All her notes are in powerpoint that she posts online and if you study you will do well in the class.
3 exams. Online assigments. Do those you will pass.
Lectures are extremely confusing, she speaks very quickly and does random drawings that she doesn't always explain well. Study guides are very long and most of it is usually not on the exam.
BVS is a great to have for BIO101. The homework is based on whats from book and the tests are on what she goes over in the lecture. If you pay attention, write good notes, and follow the study guides, you'll do fine.
NEVER take her BIO242 class lectures are confusing powerpoints have no text on them and study guides are irrelevant
Really unorganized professor who's bad at conveying information. YOU MUST GO TO EVERY CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION AT ALL TIMES. Her slides often have no text on them (pretty inconvenient), so write down everything she says. Study from the notes you take and the study guide and you should be fine. And don't buy the book, I never cracked it open
I honestly don't know how this woman has a 3.4 she deserves way less. TERRIBLE professor, worst I've ever had. You cant make sense of her lectures because she's insane and super scatter-brained. Don't expect an A in this class, her exams have nothing to do with what she lectures, and she doesn't use the textbook so you can't even teach yourself.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. Does not teach the material. She is awful at an easy job
Not very helpful at all when asked questions. Exams are nothing like study guides she makes.
Van Sciver is a terrible professor in my opinion. I received a higher grade when I did not attend her class, how funny is that. Her exams are ridiculous and she dedicated like 50 slides to a starfish I would never take this class if I knew what kind of a professor she was. No extra credit at all. She does not care about her students either.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Her lectures are terrible and she doesn't do anything but mumble anything into the microphone. Doesn't even write anything on the slides. Her tests are so much harder then they need to be and anything she puts on the study guide aren't even on the test. she doesn't care about her students.
Prof. Van Sciver is not as bad as all these comments are saying. As long as you GO to class, TAKE notes like your supposed to do and PAY attention you will pass the class and get the grade you deserve. The test are a bit tricky, but what do you expect it's physiology.... It's not supposed to be easy.
Her power points are very unorganized, she is a bit corny in a charming way but the tests were a very specific and her lectures were very broad.
BVS is a very kind woman, and she cares about how her students are doing. The biggest issue I ran into is that she is very disorganized and her ppts are nearly useless. I resorted to just taking notes from the book after the second week of classes. She can be convoluted in explanations and may not fully understand questions asked in class.
Van Sciver is cool. For basically no reason, she added an additional 9 pts. to the 1st exam. The mastering a&p questions are annoying and 10x more difficult than the material she presents in lecture and the questions she asks on tophat or the exams. Overall, pretty easy class if you just keep up with the content regularly.
I had Dr. Van Sciver for a 5 week-long summer class. She explains things well and she'll tell you all you need to know in lecture, so reading is not necessary. She's also very approachable. However, she is slightly disorganized and sometimes her tests are a bit confusing. Overall I would say I had a positive experience taking this class with her.
She really knows the course she is teaching. If there is something she thinks the class doesn't know even if they don't mention that they don't know it she will go over it while demonstrating so it is in your head. She only puts things on the test that we learn in class there aren't any tricks she actually wants her students to be successful.
SHES HORRIBLE AND DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH AT ALLLLL
Honestly don't know why she has such a low rating. It's true she's very disorganized and her notes suck but she's hilarious and it makes lecture enjoyable. Everything on the study guide is on the test, and all the answers to the homework are online. Super easy class.
Oh Barbara... please please please learn how to use a computer. Or how to lecture. She gets sidetracked very easily. Her ppt slides are completely worthless, so I suggest showing up and copying her drawings down. The textbook she uses isn't great either. At least she cracks jokes every now and then.
Poor thing... BVS has a lot of issues with technology and life in general. Physiology is a pretty difficult course to begin with and BVS makes it harder. She made some pretty interesting diagrams that consisted of many miscellaneous arrows and shapes. Sometimes they were helpful, but sometimes they just made things may more confusing.
Wow some of these reviews are harsh. I agree 100% that she is very disorganized, can't use a computer to save her life, and her notes suck. But, she is also hilarious, she does know her material, and she posts study guides that usually cover 90% of the tests. As long as you study and do the homework, you can pass this class with her.
BVS while a nice woman, a poor professor. The class is not hard but she makes it more difficult than it needs to be by being very disorganized. The study guide is very helpful. Lectures are very boring.
Van Sciver is awesome! Her drawings are awful but she makes everything easy to understand if you listen. She uses an app for quizzes during class and there are Aplia assignments which are difficult. She makes the class fun and easy to understand if you actually pay attention and she tells you what is on the test if you listen. Tests were fair.
Van Sciver covers everything you need to know in her class in her lectures. Her tests each have a study guide made for them which basically detail the questions that will be on the tests. Overall she is a really good professor and as long as you put in some extra work you should be fine in her class.
Van Sciver is very sweet and has good intentions. Her powerpoints are awful. Listen to her talk during lectures and take hand written notes. Be prepared to do a lot of work on your own to understand everything... Homework was extremely difficult and didn't help me at all and exams were hard.
She will probably be one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Her lectures are horrible. She mumbles when she talks and what she talks about 50% of the time will not be on the test. Her drawings are pathetic and wont help. Exams just shouldn't be as hard as they hard. The homework is wicked hard and not relevant. She will never respond to emails.
Powerpoints have very few if any words. She rambles during lectures which gets confusing and frustrating, if you miss one thing you're lost for the rest of class. Mindtap hw can take hours, do it with friends. You basically have to teach your self the material. With all that being said, she's a nice woman who means well and can crack a few jokes.
Barbara is very genuine and nice. That being said, I will never take another class with her again. She mumbles and rants during the lectures which takes already challenging material to another level. The homework is barely helpful, hard, and honestly a waste of time. If you end up taking a class with her be prepared to do a lot of self-studying.
Rambles in class and has horrible powerpoints. Not given information necessary to pass her tests.
Rambles during class then rushes through actual material. very disorganized
Barbara is a sweet lady and all, but she is terrible at teaching. She always gets sidetracked during lectures and her exams are really difficult. All of the PowerPoints are on Sakai but if you don't go to class or read the textbook, it won't be much help to just look at them. Again, such a nice lady, but needs to work on her teaching skills.
She makes the class harder than it should be. She's super nice, but doesn't teach well. Some of her powerpoints were vague and had little on the slides. She uses TopHat each week, so make sure to go to class those days. She updates the study guide a lot, so don't be surprised to see changes to it. Exams are hard, so study a lot in advance .
She understands that her students are adjusting freshman so she's as lenient as possible. Her tests get very specific and often have questions you're not prepared for. Homework is hard and not helpful but all the answers are on quizlet. Homework, tophat, and most tests are curved. I'd suggest going to RA study group bc they have test answers.
Very nice lady but can't teach well. All of her exams had issues with them which was quite frustrating. Having gone to all the lectures, i can say that i for sure didn't have to go to majority of them since i didn't learn very much and would just answer the questions on the study guide before exams. Overall, not horrible, but not helpful
I re-took physiology to get a better grade. I took it with Van Sciver the second time and HATED IT. She doesn't follow a power point. Doesn't email back in a timely manner. You have to go to class because what she lectures but doesn't follow a power point well at all. Some questions on the exam were never discussed in class. Wouldn't recommend.
SOOOOOOO boring. Jumps around from key concepts to unrelated topics without warning or segway. Spends a decent amount of lecture time not teaching concepts. Also had for BIO 101, you really don't have to go to class unless you want the attendance points (which are taken intermittently). Posts study guides before exams and major concepts online.
Again, and ungodly amount of homework. Extremely boring, rarely well prepared for lessons, just seems to wing it and ramble. doesn't use a microphone.
Super nice lady but she will definitely go down as the worst teacher I have/will ever have. 65+ HW questions weekly for minimal credit. power points lack important information and she seems to be making everything up as she goes. hard to keep track of what she is saying. avoid her classes at all costs.
Professor Van Sciver is a nice lady, but unfortunately that won't help you pass her class. Her power points are unclear and she takes 3 weeks to teach a single chapter. Tests were somewhat similar to the study guide she gives out, but you have to do a lot of work outside of lecture to understand. Avoid her class if you can.
Umm so far the Worst Professor at URI, dont even bother meeting with her during office hour because she will complain how you are taking up her time. Does not make herself available for students.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. She snaps at people for talking in class but she'll have a 15 min convo with someone DURING an hour fifteen lecture. Her power points are terrible and include 0 info, all she does is draw, and her drawings don't make sense. Taught myself with the textbook, only reason to show up is to know what the exam is focused on.
So BIO classes have a lot of material, you have to study if you want an A in her class. She talks a lot and you can miss something important if you don't pay attention. I sit in front and pay close attention. Her drawings are funny and if you follow her thought process you'll get the concept. Also homework is wicked hard, consider help or the AEC.
I had van sciver for BIO101 and she was great for that course but absolutely avoid her at all cost for BIO242. Her powerpoints have virtually no information in them, I basically taught myself everything from the textbook. She draws terrible pictures that make no sense during lecture and tends to ramble. She does not prepare you for exams at all
Lecture is all over the road. Go to class for the rare occurrence that she says something useful. Other than that I taught myself- buy the textbook!! Uses tophat but doesn't know how to work it. You will do fine if you put the work in yourself and learn the material. Most of tests she will give free points for questions she doesn't think are fair.
During a lecture, you may be starting to talk about the GI tract and then all the sudden she begins bringing up basketballs, welcome to Barbs class. Her lectures are completely all over the place. Make sure to draw down all diagrams she draws. Will give 1-2 answers per exam. Buy the textbook- it's how you'll learn.
Prof. Van Sciver's lectures could be a bit all over the place at times, and her initial explanation of things could be confusing. Essentially she's not very organized. However, she is a genuinely sweet woman who, if you visit her office hours/review sessions, will take as much time as you need to review anything you missed and/or don't understand.
She gives us slides that don't have the right stuff in them then gets mad that we are talking. Her voice makes me want to fall asleep. Everything I have learned in this class I learned in high school.
Just draws terrible pictures the whole class and then claims they cover the entire powerpoints information. Expect to teach yourself everything in this class.
Barb is not the best at teaching in class so get ready to self teach outside of class. Gives you a lot of bonus points on tests as well as on Mastering and Tophat so try hardest to get A's in those and it will for sure help if you're a poor exam taker. Attendance is not really important since you end up learning the material from yourself anyway.
She is a real gem. Pay close attention to the diagrams she will draw in class. Understanding those is a gateway to success. For exam prep, be sure to look over online homework questions.
Be prepared to teach yourself everything outside of class because she doesn't help. She's never in her office and when you make an appointment she forgets about it. You can never expect what's going to be on the exams because she gives you a study guide that doesn't correlate with the exam. If you can get out of taking this professor, do it.
Overall her class was not the worst thing in the world, however you are much better off with Weatherbee for this course. Her lectures are pretty much pointless to go to because she just reads off the slides, I only went like once a week and still managed to do well on the exams. Grades are calculated very strangely, but overall most people do well
Van Sciver doesn't get the respect she deserves, she is actually a really good, and easy teacher. Class is an easy A, powerpoint lectures are clutch, and she's very easy to contact.
Nice woman, confusing class. She can be all over the place and her powerpoint have a lot of mistakes. She also likes to draw a LOT. You have to study and spend time copying the powerpoints in your own time to catch up to her fast paced lectures. . Homework constantly but not too difficult. She hardly did attendance and warned you ahead of time.
BARB is the best.... she knows what she is talking about and she is very cute. Pay attention in class and take good notes from the slides. Do not use the study guide as it doesn't help. look on quizlet for past exams, many questions are the same. She is so nice and she has a great sense of humor. GO TO CLASS AND YOU WILL PASS! ENJOY!!!!!!
Solid choice. Beef up your grade with the easy TopHat, Mastering homework, and extra credit (if she still does those) because the tests are hard (but fair). Really the only criticism is that she needs to make her lecture ppts organized and add a little depth to slides. One of the most approachable professors.
Awful teacher. Goes way too fast through the slides and just reads off them. Is very rude and doesn't let anyone talk during class even during top hat questions. Explains the wrong things sometimes and brushes it off when it is brought to her attention. Rushes through all the material so I ultimately taught myself everything.
bad teacher. must teach yourself literally everything. horrible at answering questions and is rude
Barb is probably the WORST professor URI has to offer. She reads off of the slides, has no idea what she's talking about. You'll be teaching yourself. She draws things that make no sense, and tests you on over 1000 slides of material at once with SUPER specific questions she wouldn't even know the answer to. Avoid Barb, if you value your GPA.
Tests are very specific. Hard to pay attention in class, have to teach yourself. Got a 92.4, when A is 93. she does not round up!
Her class is average at best. She is a great person, but can be a little unorganized. Although she lectures a lot, everything said can be found on the power point. If you happen to zone out youll be fine. She makes it impossible to fail her class. She provides studyguides for every exam and drops your lowest score. Put in the effort, youll do
Dr. Van Sciver is a SWEETHEART. This class is material heavy and much reading is needed to succeed. This class can be sometimes confusing due to the complex concepts that it entails. If you are looking to matriculate to medical school, you will find this class exciting like I did. Not much reading needs to be done from the textbook.
I think she's a pretty good professor! Can be a little disorganized, but I just ignore when she draws things bc it confuses me more. Her exams are exactly like her "study guides" and the mastering HW is not hard, it actually helps. there's no diagrams/figures really on tests. the last exam is the final, so only 4 tests too! she's a sweetheart!
She posts the powerpoints online and if you study directly off of those you will do well in the class. She uses mastering and tophat which are sometimes used in class for attendance. Extremely kind woman.
The material in this class is tough to begin with but I was so lost in her lectures. She was kind of all over the place and very scatter brained. Attendance isn't mandatory but you are only graded by one HW assignment per week and four exams. She posts all of the lecture slides so I just taught myself and stopped going to class.
The material is pretty hard, and the lectures were very disorganized - however she's so kind and understanding. Only one homework assignment a week that's extremely easy. Slides are all posted online, which helps because I did pretty much teach myself - tests aren't difficult as long as you go over powerpoints. She gets the job done
She is one of the best professors I've ever had. She's caring and listens to student feedback. She describes the material in different ways than the textbook and creates diagrams for better understanding. I feel like I am learning from a friend, she is very approachable and I never feel intimidated to ask a question.
great lady who gives honest advice
I am sure barb is a great teacher in person but if you are taking her class online due to covid-19 please be careful. She is not use to having teach online still and won't post things at the right time. Cling to your gmail b/c she always changes due dates and times. Very disorganized but a sweet professor! Go to class!!
Prof. Van Sciver is amazing! She's super kind, really funny, and loves both the material and teaching it. Clear grading criteria, and is always willing to answer reasonable questions. I'm a little upset that I had her for an online class because online was not for her, but she's a great teacher nonetheless. A real gem at URI.
If you have her during COVID-19 period, Im so sorry.I felt like I was goin got class for nothing. She was all over the place and I got lost as well. I would recommend people to just go through the slides on your own time because going to class isnt going to change anything. This class has over 100+ kids so I get why this was difficult for her.
