Had her for Archaeology. She's not really interested in teaching, just sorta getting a paycheck it seems. The tests are insultingly easy, all multiple choice and true-false. And she isn't even interested in scholarly paper-writing.
Took summer course, but she failed to appear for two of the classes, that's 6 hours out the window. She e mails like crazy, but not when she is absent. Makes interesting subjects less interesting.
Prof. Worley assigned alot of reading for summer course. But, in-class videos most helpful plus interesting! Two class projects, one an archeol. data collection, the other a discussion of a hotly debated topic in the field, challenging & relevant!
The easiest grader at UMass with the easiest tests. Fun writing assignments. Too many videos. She should lecture more because she's more interesting than videos. Doesn't understand nor answer questions sometimes.
I love her! Anyone who doesn't like this woman really needs to get their heads checked. It's UMASS BOSTON, people, not MIT. How hard do you want the tests to be? Sorry if everything was so easy for brilliant ol' you, but in an intro class you can't know what the students are capable of.
Great teacher!! I had hard time with term paper but my language Chinese and Im no so good in writting. The lecture very clear she make it easy to understand. I felt better about exams, no tricky qestoins. Shes very fair to students and take us seroius. Kind of hard, but she make it seem like fun!
This was a great course. Mostly about human evolution and primates. We talked a lot about the Neanderthal controversy. The tests were fair and she was a great prof. Some fun films too. I really liked this course.
This is my 2nd class with her. She doesn't like to assign work and really just wants to have a "salon" where we chat the whole time. I appreciate that. She's nice, fun, and when she talks, very interesting. I wish she would stop doing that thing where she flips throught the book pages...yawn.
She's awesome and really knows how to spur a class discussions. Some of the best discussions I've had in any college classroom. Easy and fun and I learned a whole lot. We liked it so much as a class that we are all getting together for a field trip to Salem after the semester!
this course involved ethnographic field work but she made it easy for us -- brought a shaman and her rituals right into the classroom for us to study! the discussions were exciting, and the films were great. This is a great course! Nice lady!
Great classes, great professor! She makes sure nobody falls behind. Prepares everyone who shows up for classes for all exams.
What a joke. Took her over the summer, she was habitually late, blaming traffic. Also didn't show up twice, no advance warning. I do my part, show up & on time-evidently she can't be bothered. Easy A if that's what you're looking for, but she didn't know basic biology & flips through the book looking for answers she doesn't have. Boring & flaky.
I have decided to add anthropology as a minor as a result of this course. Lectures were clear, the study guides were very detailed, and the films and slide shows were terrific! The instructor seems to really care about students. It was one of the best courses I've had at UMASS.
For a 100-level course Professor Worley put too much emphasis on workload and not enough on a broad introductory overview of Anthropology. She was a tough grader and often put down students' work.
the course isn't too hard, has a midterm and final, and two porjects that were really fun. we got study guides for everthing and the lectures were fun, a few real good films. she's nice prof and has time for students, goes over everything bfore exams
I've taken three courses with this prof. and they were all great. She has a lot of interesting experiences in the African desert and makes it sound fun. I liked the books they were easy to read and the tests were easy with the study guides.
I took this class online, and it was tough. There is a lot of reading, between the books, assigned articles, and lectures. Four tests, four papers, discussions... and i never really knew what she wanted in a paper. Not a big fan...
i've taken 3 online classes and this was the most exciting one yet -- i looked forward to the discussions every day! she gives good study guides and the readings were really fun. i liked the short papers, especially the one about magical knowledge. if you take an online, this one is great!

WAYYYYYYYY too much reading! What a HUGE waste of my time! The readings were boring and repetitive. This class was seriously a pain in the a**.
Very laid back easy going.

I LOVE this professor. I am taking her online course this semester and am intrigued by the readings and her discussion questions. She communicates well, and is interested in learning from students while she teaches us. How could you not like a class on witchcraft anyway???
This class was cool! I always wanted to take a course on human evolution, and this one fulfilled the science req. She has great lectures and slide shows, esp. on primates and Neanderthals. The gorilla project was a lot of fun.
She is an amazing professor. You will learn a lot from her.
People's and Cultures of Africa. So easy. Just read the books and show up. You'll get an A. God Bless this Woman!
I took the Anthropology On Film course last summer, and it was absolutely the best course I've had the past three years.
She is kind of all over the place...a little silly. Very nice and also very very helpful. She takes a ton of time to make these slideshows to make it easier for the students. They made the class much easier. She also breaks everything down in class. But it's important to show up. OH and don't take Saturday classes in general..it sucks!
Took an online course with her. African Cuture....... The material and discussions were just super interesting and the exams were VERY easy. Her explanations and annoucements can be very lenghty though.
Culture & Global Warming was the best course I had my senior year. She has great slide shows and lectures. Very well organized.
Worley is great! One of my favorites in the dept. Taken 3 classes with her. Pretty mellow, good lectures and discussion, covers lot of material. Buy the books, come to class! Usually a combination of papers and quizzes. She is always ready to talk and help you out in any way - but you have to ask.
This was an online class. There are mandatory discussion topics each week. If you put the effort in and the posts, you will do fne. There are 2 tests and 5 page paper. All the notes are on powerpoint and easy to understand. This was a very interesting class.
Great professor who really cares about her students doing well. She makes it clear from the first day that you must earn your grade. There are 2 tests and a really interesting project. Make sure you read the text because a lot of the information is covered more in the text than in the notes.
The class wasn't too bad. It is alot of information and the material can be a bit dificult but she makes the exams and the class easy so it's not that bad. It is a good course and I would recommend it!!
I had her for an online class over a summer. Really easy class, super annoying final project but you don't have to do it if you take the class pass/fail. She is pretty nice and is easy to deal with and responds prmptly. A good deal of reading and discussion was mandatory but grades were fairly liberal and tests weren't too hard.
I took two online classes with her and she was fantastic. Precise in what is expected, very organized, and helpful with the tests. There is tons of reading but she chooses great books, very interesting and I found I read for my own interest as well as the class. I look forward to taking a few more from her.
I have actually taken three classes with her and she is great! The reading material is very interesting, she is extremely clear and understandable, and she is very easy to get in contact with. I took the classes just for fun (electives) and wish I could take more! There is a lot of reading, required discussions, two-three tests, and a 5 page paper
not recommended if you don't like to read; lot of readings; 25% Discussion, 25% Midterm, 25% Final, 25% Term Paper
She could be condescending at times, and she didn't use lecture notes, so we were always a week behind in the syllabus. That said, she was interesting, funny, and broke down the material into relevant and digestible bites. She also taught to her tests, even (sometimes) giving you the essays in advance. Tells great stories about her research!
Online class. Relatively easy. A decent amount of writing. Clear instructions, firm deadlines. Gives you 2 tries for each quiz, exam. Learned quite a bit in a few weeks, very interesting.
Love Prof Worley. The best prof at Umass!Took her sat course and it was amazing! She so sweet and nice. Wished all my prof were like worley.Take her you wont regret it!
She will look for any reason to drop your grade. I wrote a 5 1/2 page paper for her when the requirement was 4 pages, and she dropped me an entire letter grade just because the margins were the wrong size. Even with the right margins, it was still longer than the requirement. The department head says that there have been multiple complaints.
Attendance is mandatory and she often asks questions on graded quizes and exams that you would only know if you went to class. Lectures are boring and can either go way off topic or become stuck on one topic, so the class is often behind which forces her to assign slide show readings in place of missed lectures. She is an easy grader, though.
She comes off as a little condescending, do the readings and the discussions though and you are okay. One try for the tests and they were not super hard, but even with review I got a B, she asks some obscure stuff. I don't know yet how she will grade the term paper.
online class...didn't offer any study guides, barely communicated with the class, didn't help when I asked questions about my paper..don't reccomend
She is extremely condescending and just plain mean to her students for no reason. I will never take a class of her's again. If you choose to suffer through her class, you have to read her slideshows and books.
This class is way too monotoned, too much information prior to testing. Lectures only, no interaction. Poor learning environment. Nice professor but it was hard to really learn much. Her repetition is the only way I actually picked up anything. Interesting subject, but slideshows and straight lecture made it boring and near impossible to focus.
Not recommended if you hate writing long papers. Too many books assigned mostly on witchcraft and spiritism. So far, one ridiculous exam. This course can easily mess your GPA so avoid it at all costs.
She grades quite fairly. During class she would frequently provide hints to her students about test material. Other than that, she just goes off her Power Point. One of those classes where your attendance is more important than your attention. She is quite condescending and monotoned.
She is mad chill. Knows exactly what she's teaching best Professor at Umass Boston. Very helpful, interacts with students. Recommend her Best professor I ever had so far.
As an online teacher: Requires a LOT of reading- four books over the course of this semester, and you can't skip anything or you won't be prepared at all for the tests and papers. However, she is a very caring teacher and a fair grader.
This lady gives too much work on a pointless tribe in Africa. She wants you to read her crappy books that were never published (guess why) because they ramble on about a people ill never see or care about and vice versa. This class should not have to be offered frankly its a scam by the college to make money.
I've had this professor for three classes during my time at UMB. She requires far too much reading, on books that are VERY dry. She is very narrow minded, and expects papers to be done within guidelines I remember being taught in 4th grade. Her exams are way too long, but she grades fairly. I would not recommend this professor to my worst enemy.
Excessive reading and not enough focus on important concepts. For a 3 credit course, it is treated like a 6 credit course. Online course and could never get responses to my emails. This professor even judged the way I take notes telling me I shouldn't have to print her slideshows- as if my 4.0 GPA reflects poor study habits! Ridiculous tests.
Not a hard class, there are several books but she gives really detailed study guides. She drops a lot of hints about what’s on the exam during the lectures. Some amazing stories about her field work in Africa. It was a great course. I think just about everybody got an A or a B.
Professor Worley is a great professor! Although I took her class online, her passion for the subject was evident. She replies to emails fairly quickly. There is a lot of reading which at first i wasn't thrilled about but they were all really interesting books. I was surprised how much I learned and how much I enjoyed her class.
Professor Worley knows A LOT about African culture and shares her first-hand experiences. I took this class online, so it goes without saying that a lot of writing goes into it. There is a great deal of reading, but not that bad if you manage your time. The professor responded quickly to any emails I sent her. She wants you to do well. Great class!
Great Professor. Sweet lady. Mad chill and very fair grader. Would take another one of her class in the future.
I took this as an summer online course and was not sure what to expect. I loved this class and learned so much. You will have to read all the books and post weekly for the discussion,as long as you read the material you should be able to get an A. I received a B+ in her class because I missed 3 weekly post, being it was the summer I was ok with it
I absolutely love anthropology, but Worley's class was terrible. She expects students to mindlessly regurgitate her outdated lecture material for tests and papers. She is condescending and intellectually regressive. Her lectures are disorganized, and she goes on random rants for 20 minutes at a time. One of the worst classes I've taken.
The course was about the cultures and peoples of Africa, and we read several ethnographies. The lectures were clear and brought in current affairs to update the ethnography. The slide shows were fun; several films, also fun. Fair grader, I would take another course with her.
(I marked the categories wrong before see below -this is corrected) The course was about the cultures and peoples of Africa, and we read several ethnographies. The lectures were clear and brought in current affairs to update the ethnography. The slide shows were fun; several films, also fun. Fair grader, I would take another course with her.
Professor Worley was very helpful to encourage me to stay in the course when I was about to drop out. I'm glad I did stay.
Readings are too long and dry. Constantly goes off topic. Lectures about things that have nothing to do with the course. Feels like a third grade classroom.
You learn nothing in lecture. She just rambles on about how she went to Africa and had such a great time. All test info comes from handouts and readings. If she didn't grade attendance you could show up on test dates and pass easily. She also has assigned seats for everyone. Easy "A", but waste of time.
I've taken 2 online classes w Prof Worley. She is very clear about her expectations & the few times I had questions she was helpful & quick to respond. There's alot of reading involved but, hello, it's an online college course. Keep up with reading & the weekly postings & youre fine. She is also a somewhat lenient grader. I would take again.
The theory of macro-evolution is outdated and contradictory to science but she did an okay job trying to explain what is clearly unexplainable. You will be confused by this class because the topic is religious in nature, not because she is a "bad" professor. Topics are 200 years behind modern science. Info is regurgitated from High school.
Mandatory attendance, generally boring, repeating lectures but the material is interesting to know. She is sometimes more engaged in the material on certain days. Not any homework for the entire semester except 3 easy papers. I would take her class again. DO NOT NEED TEXTBOOK, it says required, but it totally isn't. Believe me, PP's are enough.
She is by far the best professor I've had. She's not harsh or unfair, but she is appropriately strict. She expects you to do better than your best, but is still realistic. There is no room for error or laziness, everything is 120% clear-cut & explained in her guidelines. Communication is key, & she is wonderful at it. READ EVERYTHING. No skipping!!
ANTH 272 (People & Culture Africa Winter 2016). First off the online class was rich with information, VERY organized, and her assignments were reasonable. If you are interested in learning about Africa, receiving an A in her class will be easy!
Probably the worst professor I have had at UMB. Most of my professors here have been friendly - not Professor Worley. No bathroom breaks allowed (we're in our 20's...), lectures are very boring, extremely rude and condescending to students. It's like she doesn't want to be there teaching us. So weird. Did not use textbooks, PPs are plenty.
If you really have to take this, take the online course. You won't be happy in her class. No cell phones. No bathrooms during tests.
THe class I took was offered as a 4 week winter course. It is offered this was as it has a diversity requirement (so you don't have to take an extra semester to take 1 class). Prof. Worley was extremely responsive, got you what you needed early, and made sure you knew what you needed to. Clone her.
Good professor. Very fair grader.
She seems to pick favorites quite often. If you do not participate, you do not exist. Exams are basically just essays and a few multiple choice. Decent professor, probably wouldn't take again in my opinion.
She's boring but if you take notes you will get an A. She actually answers your questions during tests. She hates when you talk in class and it is dead silent in there so she will hear you. There were a couple or tests and a paper but if you follow the paper's instructions you will get an A.
I wish I took this class with a different professor. She seems to be frustrated by being in the class. She doesnt motivate to learn her subject. Syllabus was worthless because she changed everything all the time, and you wouldnt know which schedule to follow. We didnt get any feedback for the final paper, just a-matter-of-fact grade.
she wasnt awful but she also wasnt great. I wouldnt take any other classes with her. she gives a crazy amount of POP QUIZZES and you just listen to her lecture the whole class. we had 3 exams
Online Class. Very long powerpoints. Very strict on tests and quizzes. Takes a long time to grade. Little to no feedback on assignments.
Professor Worley is great. I have had her for multiple online anthro classes, and they were all set up in a similar fashion. Read a book, test on it. DQ's weekly. A midterm, a final and a term paper. Its not a hard class, but does have a lot of reading and heavy, but good lectures/slide shows. I would definitely take her again.
Online class is a ton of reading. The exams are reasonable and the Essay is on the first book (which I wish someone told me) so I could take better notes. Not super hard but need to know material
She was nice but very boring. Maybe because I had her at 8AM -- avoid this if you can. You really don't need the textbook, she does a good job at condensing info in a plethora of PowerPoints, but she can be rather repetitive and disorganized and watching her try to work technology was painful. Who knows, maybe she doesn't like 8AMs either.
Professor Worly explains everything in detail. Do all the reading and review the lectures. Take notes. Exams are timed but you will do well if you read the material. Lots of reading but manageable. The books are really enjoyable. The essay questions for mid and final exams are based on the books. Do the weekly online discussions on time.
I took Professor Worley's intersession class which is a little intensive because of the time frame. The material was fascinating and I learned more than I expected. Just prepare yourself for a LOT of homework. The graded assignments were fair and expectations were clear. It was well worth the effort, would recommend.
Professor Worley Did a fantastic job running the course. She does a great job of going over slides and thoroughly explaining each topic. Overall the course has a lot of reading, which is necessary. There are a couple of labs and essays to write, but if you read the textbook and study, there won't be any problem.
I had a nice experience taking ANTH 272 this semester. The topics were cool, and the things we read were for the most part very interesting. It was a very chill class with not a lot of assignments. The reason I don't rate Prof. Worley higher is that we had barely any interaction with her. There wasn't a lot of feedback or personal attention.
I had an amazing semester with this professor. She always reaches out as soon as she has the chance to email. I learned so much from her and she is very caring. her grading criteria and syllabus are very clear. Make sure you do every assignment on time and read the chapters. You will get a good grade if you put in the effort.
An incredible amount of reading alongside very wordy presentations/lectures. Exam questions are also SUPER specific, so you do have to read everything (or know what to search for). However she is known for scaling her exams almost each time, which can be a lifesaver with the way they're set up. Definitely not a casual elective.
SUPER interesting and nuanced perspectives. Really encompassed such a huge topic and was able to cover each aspect with detail. Caring and understanding-- email if you have issues and Prof W will help you figure it out. Didn't know what to expect from the course, turned out to be one of my favorites by the end.
Pretty easy course as long as you do the reading and watch the films but there were a lot of them.
I took Anth105 as an async class so I didnt interact with her much, but when I did, she was very helpful and kind. The class wasnt bad but there was a lottttt of material. Took it as my last gen ed and I can't complain. Def a great option for people who dread the nat sci courses
Pretentious + extremely rude. Her condescension even through emails is apparent. Just because you lived in huts in Africa doesn't mean you know it all. Look up 'cultural appropriation' , sweetie. Huge waste of time, this class was not what I expected I am disgusted I spent money for this.
