Super super helpful!(also super hilarious and entertaining) Always asking for class input on how he can explain topics best. Highly recommend him. The topics covered in class are complicated but he explains them extremely well. Could not imagine a better professor!! TAKE HIM!
This professor is awesome! He super energetic and loves what he does! Although, bio 105 is pretty hard; if you don't ask for help you'll be in trouble.
He's super goofy! He makes class exciting and tries to explain everything so that everyone understands. He's great!
I personally do not like this professor. Although he is super kind and a nice guy his teaching methods just didnt work for my kind of learning. He explains topics that are very odd and hard to grasp the concept. Unless you wanna go to the tutors a lot, do not take him.
Barrett is super awesome! Although some of his teaching methods might not be for everyone he is really a fantastic guy! He loves seeing people in his office with question about the material! He really makes the class interesting! If you have the chance take him!
Overall, I didn't mind Dr. Klein, however, he often went off on weird tangents and we didn't cover all of the important materials. We got behind pretty early in the year, and his exams were tough. But he is very passionate about biology which made everything a bit more interesting, and he was very funny
I was not satisfied with this class. Klein is a really nice and fun guy, but it was distracting when I was trying to learn in lecture. He did not cover all the material in class, so read the book even though he says it's not required. He only teaches the basics but asks all application questions on tests.
Klein is a very funny and interesting guy who is passionate about biology. However, he doesn't go into detail sometimes in class about things that are on the test so I recommend reading the book. He is very picky on tests and doesn't give points back often. His lectures are very interesting though and he gives a lot of examples!
Klein is very enthusiastic and funny however he often went off on tangents and we didn't cover all of the material for the exams. He also is not the best at explaining concepts and usually confused me more than helped.
Very funny and entertaining guy. His laugh is the best. He does go on tangents unrelated to the content quite often. He uses a lot of examples to describe the topics. His test are hard though. He goes over general concepts and asks for a lot of application stuff on the test. I enjoyed the class though, he is very passionate about the Biology.
Dr. Klein is very passionate about biology. He made it fun and interesting. It was easy to learn concepts because of all the examples he used. His tangents enhanced the material. Didn't need to read book. Explained things clearly and wanted everyone to understand. His tests aren't harder than any other professor - they're the same.
He was very interested in what he talked about but sometimes couldn't explain it well. Never takes attendance. Powerpoints online which was very helpful!
Klein is a great guy. He knows how to keep you entertained. But, you never know what to expect on exams. He doesn't write his own study guides and the material on the study guides he gives out isn't even on the exam. Also he's a really harsh grader.
Klein is a really entertaining professor that knows what he is talking about. He is very good about keeping the class involved in lecture. He likes to have comprehensive questions to make sure that the class is understanding and is always taking suggestions about how he can do better as a teacher.
The class sucks, but he is awesome! It's a very difficult class, but he tries his best to explain thoroughly and make it interesting. I emailed him a lot throughout the semester and he was very willing to help. I had him for lab as well, and although the lab was incredibly stupid, I will ALMOST miss it just because of him.
Great prof, really makes Biology interesting. He is very accessible and can answer any question related to the class or bio in general. We didn't really use the textbook in class. He uses a lot of iClicker questions, which are awesome and great test prep. Tests can be tough, but aren't too bad as long as you grasp the core essentials.
Great professor. Extremely passionate about biology. His funny sense of humor makes it a lot easier to pay attention in class. I will be taking him for any other biology course if I get the chance.
Best biology teacher I have ever had. Incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of biology and really gets people engaged in his classroom. Tests are comprehensive but just show up to class and study the power points before hand and you will do fine. Also has plenty of homework so not all points come from the tests which is nice.
Great guy! He really cares about his students and is always there to help. The material gets dry sometimes, but he keeps students interested. Tests can be somewhat difficult, but the material comes directly from lectures.
Dr. Klein was okay. Organismal Bio is a hard class overall, so it will be difficult with any professor. Klein was interesting to listen to most of the time, but he was a very tough grader. I worked very hard in this class but still didn't get an A. I think Klein is probably a safe choice for this hard class.
Klein is a funny guy with a very odd sense of humor, took me a while to get used to him. He is the kindest guy you'll ever meet, but he doesn't do a very good job of explaining difficult concepts in class and lecture slides are unorganized. I went to his office hours and actually came out more confused, which is rare. He's passionate, but confusing
Dr. Klein is an amazing professor. He is clearly passionate about the subject and he clearly loves teaching. Organismal isn't overly difficult. Know your phylogenetic trees incredibly well and you should do great. Dr. Klein is a great choice for the class.
Klein teaches more upper level classes so BIO 105 can be a bit tough. He does a good job of explaining the material, but doesn't give many real life applications which are what ALL of his tests consist of. Good luck on the second test. After studying for hours I got a D after him padding the grades. He's passable, but don't expect an A.
Klein really loves his subject and you can tell from his lectures. Don't get him started on insects though, because then he won't stop talking. You have to attend lectures, otherwise you won't pass. Study a ton for all exams, you'll need it (2nd exam is a killer). If you're willing to work on the material a lot, you can definitely get a good grade.
You definitely will not meet anybody else like Klein, he's super goofy and funny. However I could study the lectures 5 hours a day and still not understand the point. His tests are near impossible, I don't remember talking about any of the questions in class.
Dr. Klein is a very interesting and funny lecturer, which helps, but his class is very hard. The tests are super hard so don't expect to get as high of grade as you want. You need to study every single night. I would probably take him again because he is interesting and passionate, but his class is not easy.
He is a great professor for biology. He knows so much and he emphasizes the important things that you need know for tests. Yes, tests are hard but you should expect that going into a biology class. If you get the chance definitely take his class.
Klein is hilarious, between his laugh and his clothes with insects on them he can put a smile on your face. He emphasizes which slides will be most important for the test. His tests are hard in the fact that they cover all of the material learned but they are fair. He holds review sessions before each test that are very helpful!
Great professor! He is focused on you learning the material as opposed to being all about the final grade. I highly recommend!
Bio in general is a tough class. Lots of studying that needs to be done outside of class. There are weekly online quizzes & there are a few group projects. Prof. Klein is legit Bill Nye! He loves science & you can tell, but it is a good quality to have in a Prof. If you put in the time to study, you should do fine on exams! But lab is the worst...
He is a very smart and helpful guy. Knows what he's talking about. But, his tests are tough-- be aware of test #2!!! 10 online quizzes, but they aren't very hard. Puts every powerpoint lecture online.
Lectures are important to attend, and a lot of information is covered in short amounts of time. Exams consist of problems with varying difficulty; some questions are pretty easy, some include very small details that are easy to miss. Encourages critical thinking and application of course material, so be sure to really understand the lessons.
Barrett Klein is a very unique professor with lots of character. He has a great sense of humor and a hilarious laugh, that alone should keep you engaged. The material is kind of boring, but Klein tries to make it more interesting. I wouldn't say the class was all that difficult, but you pretty much have to show up everyday to get a good grade.
Very engaging... makes class interesting! But, is NOT clear at all with what he expects on homework assignments/papers. The homework may seem easy, but take your time with it because he is a TOUGH grader. Probably will not take him again because his lectures were all over the place and confusing. Emailed him every week with new questions.
Barrett Klein is a character; he wears the random-est clothes! I thought it would be easier, but for some reason I struggled with BIO. There wasn't a lot of homework, but I think that having homework would have made learning the material easier. Not the best professor, but he does okay.
Terrible teacher. Assigns homework without clear instructions, then down-grades you for not following the directions that were not given to you. He just assigned a research paper and the night before it was due decided to make it into a "make an opinion and back it up paper" with no other instructions. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Won't take again
Still waiting for the grade on an exam taken over a month ago. Worst teacher I've had at UWLAX. Not clear with his expectations and not fair with grades. Unless you talk every day in class don't expect a good grade
Dr. Klein seems like a nice guy, but I was unable to relate to him in lab. He's not my favorite professor.. I felt that he was just uninterested in helping me because he was always busy. he's very smart though and if you do get his help its great. Lab practicals are long and difficult if you don't study for them. Expect a lot of work.
Great guy! Moves quickly, but there are a lot of opportunities to ask for clarification. Very helpful. Held review sessions before each exam as well as the final
Literally craziest and funniest prof I've had. He is very smart and knows what he's talking about. Tests were hard because it's not based on memorization, but more less applying the information to questions. Go to every lecture or it's hard to understand. He was very helpful in class and also holds review sessions before exams, they are challenging
Klein is a really interesting guy! he loves insects and is very nice. He does a good job of explaining the material to you. He loves in class participation. Tests can be a little difficult, and there are some online quizzes
Klein is awesome overall--short description but he is
He is an interesting professor. Not my favorite by any means. He has extremely high standards - doesn't give clear directions but expects perfection. You need to read a lot of articles that can be lengthy. A lot of the class is interpretation which was not what I was expecting as was really disappointed with.
He is a super nice guy but barely any of his tests have simple or even complex questions that can be thought through, he makes you "think like a biologist" and apply concepts to bacteria and things you don't actually learn about, and might not even be in the book. As someone who just needs this class for a gen ed- I would recommend AGAINST
Dr. Klein is a great professor overall. His tests can be difficult but if you study hard and ask questions you should be fine. He's goofy which makes the lectures easier to pay attention to. He's extremely smart and knows what he is talking about.
He is very picky and doesn't have clear instructions. You need to go to lecture because some exam questions are about talks we have had in class. He seems really fun and peppy but after the semester wares on it becomes annoying. Definitely wouldn't take him again. Its pretty easy to get distracted while in lecture.
Dr. Klein was a good lab instructor. However, I personally think he spent a little bit too much time going through what we will be doing in lab that day than was truly necessary, oftentimes taking an entire hour or hour and a half of the 3-hour lab session to do so. This often caused myself and many others to feel rushed while doing labs.
Really interesting topic and point of view combining science and art.
He is very knowledgeable in the criteria. His test are very wordy and beyond what is said in class there needs to be more studying. The test are extremely hard.
Tests are very difficult and you really really have to understand the material. If you don't feel like going the extra mile and visiting his office hours and the tutors I would not recommend taking Barrett's class. He incorporates interesting things in his lectures but you can get easily distracted in class. Attending class is a must.
Super awesome and interesting guy! Co taught bio 203 with Tom volk. Just a lecture class with few exams but that are the majority of your grade. They do NOT talk about what to expect or study for for the exams so it makes things difficult cus you just kind of have to know everything.
I had Dr. Klein and Dr. Volk together. Dr. Klein is a fun, dorky guy and makes the heavy lecture enjoyable. He usually keeps us update with internships and science news, which can be helpful. His test are hard, and you have to really work for a good grade--although, if you have questions, he is very easy to talk to.
Does not help you or prepare you for exams at all. There are two exams that you have no clue what to study for because there are no study guides and he grades like a savage.
Dr Klein is really passionate about biology so he tries to keep lectures interesting... that being said.. his 1 1/2 lecture is brutal. Super boring but overall his exams aren't horrible so as long as you take decent notes and put in some effort to study and review it's a pretty easy class.
Barrett was very passionate about what he taught, but he was a very picky grader. It was very rare that students would get full credit on a 5pt assignment.
Flexible with projects- makes lectures interesting and loves to help students find applications of course material to everyday life and future careers. Dr. Klein may not be for the faint of heart so if you aren't curious/don't participate you will struggle. Highly recommend his Entomology course!
Really interesting guy! If you need another upper level bio credit and love art I highly recommend this class. Super easy and he's flexible with assignment deadlines. He's always very helpful with any questions as well.
very very tough grader, lost lots of points for small things, lecture is long, very knowledge but probs more interested in his own research
Takes points off for everything Doesnt explain very well
He takes points off for everything on homework assignments. Not helpful when having to go online for quarantine. Offers no extra credit and his tests are really hard.
The lectures are read right from the posted slides and he really doesn't explain things outside of the slides. His tests are difficult and on everything that he said we didn't need to study for this test. The plus side is that he was very understanding and accepting of difficult situations that I was going through and let me hand in late work.
Barrett is too intelligent to be able to relate to. He is unable to reach his students and teach at a level that is understandable. Doesn't respond to emails. Grades incredibly hard as if this is graduate school and you are expected to be at a graduate/professional level. Would not recommend his courses.
For a first-year seminar class, my grade should not be as low as it is. The quizzes are over material he barely covers, his lecture slides have no text on them so you cant really review them, he is one of the toughest graders I've ever had and takes points off at the slightest mistake. I will not be taking any other class that he teaches.
Professor Klein is a really good person and is definitely very knowledgeable about Biology, but the way his lectures are structured in my opinion is that they are all over the place a lot and you don't really know how to write down what he's trying to tell you sometimes. Exams have weirdly worded questions, doesn't spend a lot of time on important
For a capstone bio class that is one credit I did more work for this class then some of my 3 or 5 credit science classess. The expectiations are unclear, the canvas site is always a mess and the 'rubric' was all over on different pages of canvas until approximatly a week before the project was due. The average for this class put majority at a B.
Super nice and approachable but this class was extremely hard. The exams were confusing and the projects made no sense.
I did the entomology FYS and I really liked it but to do good you need to show interest and talk in class, and make sure to do the quizzes bc they count for so much
Dr. Klein is passionate and intelligent but lectures to long and all he does is lecture. Isn't the best at explaining lecture material. isn't clear on how to do well. Tests are hard and weighted heavy. assigns group projects but doesn't give any time at all in class to meet with groups, even to introduce yourself or setup a way of communication.
Dr. Klein is very passionate about bugs and evolution being a fact, sometimes that took a little bit away from class like in group projects. Other than that, he was good at teaching the material and answered questions thoroughly. Definitely very important to study outside of class to succeed, but overall he was pretty good.
Klien was nice, but didn't explain material well. I felt it was mostly self tought but that seems like all the BIO 105 courses. He is probably one of the better options for BIO 105.
Tests are hard
Prof Klein knows the material he is teaching and is very passionate about biology. He does a good job explaining the material and will ask the class if they would like him to change his pace during lectures. There are weekly quizzes that are only a few points and the lowest one is dropped, the exams are a little challenging but nothing terrible.
Barrett is very passionate about what he teaches. He cares about his students and make sure they understand the material. Make sure to ask questions when you are confused and he will clarify very well. Always preview lectures, take extra notes in class, especially if he writes on the board, and review notes after class.
As with any science class, you have to put in a lot of work to get an A. Dr. Klein is a great choice for the class though. He's clearly really passionate about biology and will answer any question you have. He answers emails pretty quickly too and wants his students to do well.
I really liked this professor as a person, but his lectures were incredibly heavy and many topics didn't correlate with his extremely difficult exams. Your grade is basically your exam scores, and he takes a long time to put in grades. I'm usually good in science but I struggled in this course. Really nice guy though and easy to reach!
He is very passionate about his teaching, but lectures are heavy can be dull. Taking notes is nearly impossible; his slides are very image-oriented. Tests are relatively difficult and sometimes he will test on things he didn't cover thoroughly in lecture. He's willing to explain things until the entire class understands. Not a bad choice for BIO105
Professor Klein is very passionate for what he knows and teaches but he is very condescending when coming asking questions during class or during his "office hours". If you have not taken HIS BIO 105 class, you will not understand HIS BIO 203 class. He brings up topics from only the BIO 105 section that he taught.
He was very passionate about Biology but his lectures were very confusing and sometimes hard to follow. Very lecture heavy, we had a homework quiz every week online, and the exams were very difficult. He gave no extra credit opportunities or curved grades. A lot of studying for every exam.
Dr. Klein made the organismal lectures enjoyable and interesting. His sense of humor and interest in biology helped make the class engaging. His tests are difficult, and his office hours were somewhat difficult to attend. However, I would highly recommend taking a class with him, as he truly makes biology fun and interesting.
BK is very clearly passionate about what he does, but that does mean he can talk about it a lot. His lecture was co-taught with professor Kaur, and they could not be more different. Klein is upbeat and keeps students engaged well. The tests were difficult and a lot of very specific knowledge, so be sure to start studying early.
He is such a great guy and super funny, just put in the work for this class and you should be okay. Exams are very detailed things you need to know, so study a lot by going over concepts in lecture slides.
He is such an interesting dude. Like I would definitely want to get to know him as a person, but for professor... his lectures are very boring and confusing. He lowkey gets mad at you for asking questions and is not the most approachable. His quizzes and tests are quite hard.
Dr. K is such a funny guy and keeps it engaging. Content is complex, specific, and in great quantity so study study study. Tests are specific. Overall if you keep reviewing throughout the semester you got this. I'd say ask your questions during or after class cuz hours can be few and far between. Just pay attention in class and review.
Dr. Klein cares significantly about anthropology, and during this class, he provided us with great inciteful information that caused me to think more about what he was lecturing about. He also loves questions.
Dr. Klein was super charismatic and gave enjoyable lectures. However the layout of the class was difficult, especially without a textbook. There are few opportunities for points, and slides were provided, but test questions can be specific and tricky. I did well, but many classmates were struggling.
Professor Klein is a very interesting man. Clearly loves his job and profession. Class is not super hard but he is a rather tough grader. Small assignments in class count towards attendance
No clear expectations. Did not allow any papers on human biology, even though this was my interest and what I am going for.Told us in class different paper expectations than the ones that were on canvas, and then day paper was due, told us different information. Too much work and stress for a one credit class. Gave unclear answers to ALL questions.
he always graded me harder than others in the class, felt like he kinda had it out for me. Was good at first but then slowly got bad
I can tell Professor Klein is really passionate about the subject matter which is why I took the course, however, there are VERY FEW opportunities to raise your grade outside of performing better on the next exam. We were tested on things we discussed briefly in class and which made studying difficult. Most teaching was reading off a slideshow.
Professor Klein wasn't great at giving helpful answers when students would ask questions about lab notebooks or a general subject question. In addition, most of the time he couldn't help students if they were struggling with the platform R. Lab practicals are very difficult to study for. Assignments are graded very harshly with little feedback.
BIO 203 was the worst class I have ever taken. Lab was the only reason I passed this class.
Barrett Klein didn't teach but instead just read off of lecture slides. The exams are nothing like what is taught in the lecture, for it almost seems like they're trying to trick you. No study guides are provided and there are only 4 assignments plus 2 exams. Don't take this prof unless you are decent at learning on your own.
Barrett is such a passionate and inspiring professor. I had him for organismal which was difficult, but that's a weed-out class. Taking upper-level courses is where he becomes more clear with what is expected of you for tests. Lab practicals are difficult but if you go to lecture and pay attention he tells you what you should know.
Barrett Klein is very passionate about what he does. There are only 2 exams and a final. He gives out grade boosters like extra credit and class attendance is graded at the end of the semester. Tests are relatively difficult with half of the questions being really straight forward and the other half being difficult questions.
