this is a good guy, although verbose at times. has a lot to say, most helpful, some confusing. if you can write a semi-good essay you probably got an A.
Chances for extra credit are easy. Does not expect a lot of work. Assignments are relatively simple and tests are not too difficult. He is a friendly guy as well.
Very nice and easygoing teacher. No tests or finals, just 5 essays.
This class was easy. No tests, and only 5 essays. I turned all my essays in on the last day of class and he didn't care if they were late!
Mr. Abrams is my favorite teacher at Sierra. He is so laid back and doesn't get mad EVER!! There are no deadlines and your work is NEVER late. Just turn it in by the end of the semester and you'll get an A! I highly recommend taking him!
Very nice man. do your work and you will have no problems.
If you want a class where you will actually learn something, this isn't the class to take. It was cake and an easy A but you hardly get your money's worth. Lots of boring busy work. I also think he looks like a white Bill Cosby.
If you like politics this is the class to take he makes you write essays about political issues. I thought I was taking english not political science. I do not like the class because of it's political influence.
He is an easy grader, but his class is way to boring to pay attention. I do not recomend him at all.
Abrams is a GREAT professor! He is SO understanding about late work... I almost never go to class and yet I still got an A in the class. He's also very nice, and has a funny dry humor that is moderately amusing if you listen in class (which you don't have to anyways!)
Great guy.
Lots of work, good grader.
Phd in literature. He is very polite and kind to students. 5 Essays, 2 midterms (take home), and the final. Very good teacher.
Best English prof. on campus. He's a genius, knows what he's doing, and if you sit down and shut up you might learn a thing or two.
Great teacher, doesnt like to have to give students grades and prefers to grade easily. Awesome late work policy and he will help you in anyway possible.

Boring and hardly watched the TV section but a really nice teacher and I got everything in late and he was still nice about it.
he is so nice!!! he is really good at what he does....except that his handwriting sucks, lol
He's extremely nice, and does put some humor into his lecture. If you do your essays, you'll have no problems.
good teach monotone voice but a good teacher and knows his stuff

He was really nice and easy...a little boring at times.
good guy, very good latework policy, pretty boring at times, very unclear about what assignments are due. but i do like the class so far
He goes out of his way to help students.
He trys way to hard tomake himself sound intelligent and in doing so he completly loses everyone in the class. Pretty sure no one understands what he wants us to do for the current essay we are working on. I wish he would just cut the **** and tell us what exactly he wants us to do so we can do it!
boring as sin...
A wonderful professor. He likes people who speak up in class discussions -- and he remembers who you are. An added plus is the fact that as long as you turn in your homework before the last day of class, he's pretty calm about procrastination.
Abrams is funny and easy-going. He grades easy and isn't punctual about homework.
Very nice guy, teaches a good class and is very helpful when it comes to writting. Although he sents due dates, he doesn't grade down on assignments being late if you have a problem with one. IE) this essay is a really hard topic for me to write about, I need some more time can you offer me any suggestions? He actually let me write an essay on poetry about lyrics from a band I like instead of the poetry we were suppose to use after I explained how much I hated poetry due to a lack of understand.
mr.abrams is awesome! great teacher, extremely intelligent! he is so laid back and the class is so easy that you dont even need to go most of the time. extremely recommend him..im taking him again for 1B
AWESOME TEACHER!!!
A really cool and smart guy. We had no midterm or final in 1A and in both 1b and 1a late work doesnt get downgraded. Best part is how easy he grades on his essays. I used to always get C's and D's. In his class I always get atleast a B or higher on the essays and I always wing them.
Mr. Abrams is a really nice guy but he always talks over your head. His sentences are so complex no matter what he is trying to say.
Mr. Abrams is an excellent teacher, very understanding with students & their bs life. He accept essays, long as you turn in at the end of semester. I would recommend him to anyone, especially procrastinators, JUST don't take the class for granted, essays take time to develope. essays take time! I definitely would take Barry again for Eng 1B. hehe
Cool guy - I like him a lot. Really nice and helpful. Material difficulty depends on if you like english or not. I don't and I still felt it was pretty easy...
knows the subject very well. kind of hard to follow. jumps around a little too much in his lectures
He gives out 8 essays and three midterms. The first midterm took me a total of ten hours and the second one is already 13 hours and I am not even half way done. There is no time for my other classes and they are all suffering. If it wasn't so late in the year I would drop this class like a bad habbit.
Really nice guy! Very fair. Let's you turn things in late with few points off. Stay on top of what is going on and you will be fine. If I were you I would take his in class and not his TV one.
He really loves to teach the subject and he definitely helps you to develope a more critical thinking process. Its not hard but there are 5 essays. He grades fair and gives lots of feed back. The class isnt that fun to sit through but its easy enough, he's laidback, funny, doesnt take atteandance, and the one book you do read is great. Take it
Possibly the most confusing person I've ever met in my entire life. Class was not engaging or interesting. Discussion not encouraged. I'm an English major who loves literature and it put my to sleep without fail! his take home exams are OUTRAGEOUS. Only take him if you have a Ph.D. in discerning runaround commentary with pretentious diction.
I never understood one lecture, literally. It was the most confusing class ever. I didn't do all the reading, but the whole post modern approach just doesn't work.
Ok so...first day I didn’t understand a word he said..minding you I am a straight A student Majoring in English. but by the fourth week I was learning his language and could keep up with the INSANE long lectures..no discussion prolly cause we are intimidated by his brilliance. Hard class but not impossible to get an A out of if you like English
Ok, I love english, its my major...but this guy could not make this class more boring. Its nothing but lecture! Uninteresting, like pulling teeth to get thru. The guy is super nice and very interesting to talk to, but his course is so boring. A lot of work, and reading.
Very difficult class. He tends/always talk over your head. Not clear in board notes (cant read his hand writing). He does 5 essays which aren't long but topics are difficult to understand. Would not recommend taking!!
Abrams is a good teacher. his writing is impossible to read, but it really doesn't matter that much. lets you turn in late work without deduction. he has us watch movies (crash) and t.v shows (family guy) in class to prove points. its not the most exciting class in out there, but Abrams is a cool guy. i would recommend taking him.
Although it doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot in respect to his teaching style, Mr.Abrams is without question the nicest instructor I've had while at Sierra. As for his class itself, Lectures are often long and difficult to comprehend for some. Also, his handwriting looks more like Arabic than English.
Took him for Intro to the Old Testament. He's sweet, but he rambles on forever and it's really hard to tell what he's looking for on assignments & essays. His handwriting is illegible and he has a very quiet voice which makes his LONG rambling lectures even harder to understand! He's a sweet guy, like I said, but I wouldn't recommend his class.
I really like Mr. Abrams. He is a great guy but he does have a tendency to ramble( which he admits too). His handwriting is illegible so don't expect to copy anything off the board if you come late. Mr. Abrams knows his subject and his lectures always expand your brain but there isn't a lot of class discussion.
DON'T take the Old Testament class! Abrams gives levies ridiculous work loads- I'm an A+ student and I have trouble keeping up! He's not too harsh of a grader fortunately, but we've had 3 quizes, 2 midterms, multiple take-home essays, a group presentation and a big resrch paper- this is my most stressful class by far. Very smart/ helpful tho :)

Barry Abrams is probably one of the most intellectually stimulating teachers I have ever had. He does give a large workload but who said college was supposed to be easy? If you want to actually LEARN, take this teacher. Great ideas, discussions, and readings. He?s easy to talk to and always willing to help. Excellent Class and instructor.
Really nice guy. The class is pretty easy as long as you do the work. He accepts late work and is generally an easy grader. He posts and accepts everything online so it is not necessary to show up to class. He talks in circles and paces, so it gets borring in lecture and his instructions are not always clear.
Barry is a really nice guy and he's very smart, but his lectures are really dry and LONG! I took Intro to The Old Testament from him and I didn't understand a thing he was talking about...and I'm Jewish! Definitely one of the kindest and laid back professors at Sierra, but very confusing. There isn't much clarification or direction on assignments.
Professor Abrams is very on top of his subject and explains everything really well. The only down side is his lectures are very long and elaborate, and also very boring. He assigns a lot of reading, so be prepared to read at least 50+ pages every day.
Really solid professor. Do not take if you are simply looking for an easy, brainless class. His subtle literature jokes rule.
Solid Professor. Do not take if you are looking for a simple class to skate by in; however, you will enjoy the class if you enjoy the subject. His literature jokes are unrivaled.
Professor Abrams is one of the most brilliant people/teachers I've ever met. Prior to this class, I despised analyzing any types of literature, but his assignments were so stimulating that it completely changed my outlook. If you want to learn A LOT and have fun in the mean time take this class.
His instructions were not very clear & his handwriting is all but illegible. He was not very helpful with grammar, punctuation, format, or spelling either. In other words, if you are an English major don't take him. You won't get much out of the class. If you are a sociology major or looking for an easy G.E. class to skate on, than take him.
Mr. Abrams seems like a nice guy but his teaching is horible. As a kid with ADHD I can't figure out what's going on in this class. He is the worst teacher I've had at seirra and I highly recomend that you stay far away from his class
He's a very smart man, but don't take anything higher than ENG 1B from him. He speaks at light speed, and you can't read ANYTHING he writes. Harsh grading, and it took me 4 days to complete his mid-term for this class. If I knew earlier in the semester, I would have dropped him. The work load is tremendous with very little guidance. Good luck!
Professor Abrams is very close to how I would envision my ideal lit. survey course. His lectures are; I think, given the limitations of the course--which attempts to cover about a thousand years of literature and cultural context; elucidating and offer an enormous breadth of knowledge. I'm not sure I've ever had a more accommodating professor.
He expects way too much work. We had over 100 pages of assigned reading each week, 3 essays, discussion boards, a group presentation, 3 take home tests and 4 responses. Each of the take home tests took at least 12 hours of actual work to finish with a good grade (one took me a full 20). Essays and tests are graded on insightfulness.
Barry is a really nice guy, but I wouldn't take Intro to The Old Testament from him. VERY smart, but lectures are totally unclear. Nobody knew what he was talking about. Only 8 students remained by the end of the semester. Huge workload without any clarity during lectures or about what is expected on assignments. Take class with Jason File.
Prof. Abrams is a really nice guy. He accepts late work up until the end of the semester and is extremely helpful in fixing a problem if he misses something.keep a record of turned in assignments, and keep reminding him if he needs to fix something. Sometimes assignments not clear, or puts them online at 11pm night before. fairly easy.
Professor Abrams is a fantastic educator; I hope that my continuing education provides me with professors that are similarly passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects.
I took this class and thought it would be hard but all it is is 4 essays, pretty easy, and you just have to do the homework which is not that much, he always lets you turn in late work too. pretty easy class i recommend it to anyone.
Great professor if you are an English major. Very interesting and great information as well as textbooks. The only frustrating thing was that the professor often is really late grading papers/tests. One of the essays took over a month to be graded. Way too long!
Most useless class I've ever taken. Directions are coded in garble, takes forever to grade anything, no direction in lectures, assigns 100+ pages a night. He's absolutely horrible
Barry rocks!
Easy class as long as you do at least some of the reading (there is quite a bit of reading every week). He is a VERY easy-going instructor. You can make up all small assignments at the end of the semester for full credit. Make sure to contribute in class & you'll be fine.
I've had Abrams twice for 46A and 46B. It is not necessary to attend his classes--he does give some additional notes, though. He posts everything online and treats it much like an online class--you're responsible for DB questions. His tests are long--so start them early, but they're not that hard (sparknotes helps).
Abrams is incredible. Anyone at Sierra College is lucky to have him, a DOCTOR of English (thats a PHD, dummy) instruct at a CC, where quite honestly I have encountered way too many students who are far too unprepared for college to appreciate Barry's lectures. He is not "easy" he wants students to be successful, & hence lets them turn in late work.
Prof. Abrams's class is definitely interesting and he provides a lot (probably too much) background information and explanation of the texts. However, the one major problem that I have found in taking him for a second time (46B) is that he is extremely slow grading papers/tests. The slowest grading professor I have ever had. The class is hard work!
Excellent source of info & understanding of the texts. The lectures (online) and notes he provides are extremely detailed. He is brilliant, so it makes it difficult for the thoughts he tries to express to be clear. The major complaint is that he does not grade papers/tests in a timely manner. You will not get your grade before the next one is due.
If you want to learn, take a class from this man. Seriously, he's the real deal. If you're a slacker...well, you might get a generous grade because he's a nice guy...not because he doesn't know you're bs-er
Very understanding and laid back. Uses big words and can be hard to understand at times, but is willing to simplify or explain in other terms.
He definitely cares about reviewing work and giving feedback, teaching, his students, and his subject. I just don't know if he cares about grading. For me, grades didn't seem to reflect the quality of my work one way or the other.... did more/less, got the same grade. Frustrating to me, but that's a little thin-skinned on my part too.
Prof. Abrams is quite possibly the most intelligent I have come across. Unfortunately he is also one of the more frustrating professors I have ever come across as well. He takes forever to grade assignments - assignments that were not clearly explained. It is hard to know what he is asking for in essays and tests. Tough class, but you learn a lot.
Abrams is a nice guy & he provides a lot of supplementary material; however, his class is HARD. He doesn?t believe in giving out As. The essays are vague & graded at an upper division/graduate level. The midterm & final take a few days to complete(35+ hrs). DO NOT take if you work or are taking 12+ units(unless you don?t care about your gpa).
You can tell Barry really cares about english. He loves when the students get involved and give feedback. Overall, fairly easy professor and class. Nice guy. Will explain essay's and assignments if asked. Got a B in his class. Take it from him!
My last review got deleted somehow... Anyways... He uses big words (sometimes semi-incorrectly but no-one in sierra would notice) And he's excellent in everything except evaluating work. I've never heard someone use conception for concept as much etc... Nevertheless, is skilled with mastery of literature and english lengua.. confusing, preoccupied.
Really laid back guy, but can be boring at times because of it. He tries hard to engage the class and make it interesting though. Most of the points come from the five essays. The rest come from a few summaries and small weekly homework assignments. He's a pretty easy grader and accepts late work without taking off points.
He my favorite professor at Sierra College. He really knows his subject and is always willing to help out students. He is very laid back, so there's no need to stress out hard about his class. I love Abrams!
As an English major, you must take this--sadly. His lectures are boring; more like useless tangents. The essays are HARD and he talks to you as if you have a doctorate in Brit Lit. However, he's lenient with attendance and grading, but forced us to do the 200 point final AFTER school was out for summer. If you can avoid it, don't take him.
Worst teacher ever. Do not take. He acts like you know everything there is to know about Brit Lit and very confusing when talking/lecturing. Midterm and Final are hard to understand. Just don't take him.
He's a good teacher, knows a lot but you can lose interest in his class because his voice is monotone. He tries to make class interesting and he let's you turn in assignments late and doesn't mark off that much for them. There's two tests and three essays but they're take home finals and relatively easy. As long as you read the stories you'll be fine.
I love the teacher, even though he is monotone and sometimes lectures can be boring, but if you really pay attention you can find many good, fun and interesting things to talk and think about. The book he used made me discover many things that are interesting in our society. He accepts late work. Deffinatly consider taking him again.
Good person, great sense of humor, intelligent and knows his stuff well. Sometimes speaks above community college level but will gladly answer your questions. Uses articles young people can relate to; one day we even watched South Park
easiest going teacher , he is very helpful and always available on his sylubus he even has his cell phone number so students can reach him at anytime, he replies to the emails within minutes, he is very clear and as long as you do ur essays you don't even have to be in the class u can just turn ur work online, 4 essays, 1 final in class essay
I personally love Abrams!! He is very knowledgable when it comes to British Lit and he may come off as monotone and boring, but you do learn a lot from him. Unfortunately his handwriting is illegible but he knows that. Very lenient, will let you turn things in at the very end. As long as you turn everything by the end of the semester there is no reason you won't get an A in his class :) wish he taught more classes...
Barry Abrams is my favorite instructor I've ever taken a class with. He's extremely brilliant and makes every subject interesting. He's a very easy grader, takes into account every idea you have and gives credit for them. He also gives full credit for late work. I love Abrams, and I highly recommend taking any class he offers.
Abrams is quite the character. He is brilliant and engaging, but he takes some time getting used to in terms of being able to keep up with his lectures. The class is mostly lecture based. The class is tricky because there isn't a lot of homework, so be sure to do well on the few assignments you do have. He is fairly easy.
I loved this class with Mr. Abrams. If I had more free time and money to take English classes that I don't need, I would take his classes because I liked him so much. Unfortunately, I'm a science major. He's fair, funny, and loves the subject so much that he makes you love it too. Not a hard class if you know how to read
Too smart for his own good; maybe it works in class but I wouldnt go back to find out having taken him online. Cant form a proper, coherent sentence to save his life. Got a great grade because you can do work from the beginning of the semester in the last week and he might take a point or two off at the most. Overall: Avoid.
This class is alot of work! If you are dedicated and have have excellent time manegment skills then this class will be easy for you. Otherwise there is alot of reading, essays and assignments due. Prepare for alot of work. He is lenient on late work which is helpful when you have 3 essays due at the same time in different classes.
Barry Abrams is very smart, kind and loves to teach. His discussions are mentally stimulating, and he brings very well thought of arguments and ideas. I learned so much from Professor Abrams! And I do believe he is one of the hardest working professor at Sierra College.
He is one of the best teachers at sierra college, He explains what exactly wants from his students, there are 4, 5 essays due. All of them are very busy. In the first day he says you can only revise one essay but he alwys let you do as many as you can for a better grade. The dead line for everything is one week after the semester ends.
Barry is a very easy going teacher. He takes late work & grades easy. He is a little hard to hear at times & his lectures can be hard to follow. Attendance isn't mandatory, as long as you write insightful essays you should be golden.
Most of the class periods consist of lecture and group discussion. The things he says can be very confusing and hard to follow. His essay prompts are a little confusing as well. HORRIBLE HANDWRITING. Unless you're an english major class is pretty boring. But, he grades easy and accepts late work without deducting too many points which is nice.
Be prepared to read a TON for this class. We used a 3 volume anthology, and we read just about every page in them! His weekly assignments were easy and outlined clearly. His tests were very time consuming and difficult. He's a very nice guy though and very approachable for help. He is also lenient with due dates.
Great Professor! Gives constructive criticism & is laid back. Uses the readings in class & builds upon those readings for the essays. He is very open-minded. Definitely taking another one of his classes.
Reading is spread thin so you do not focus on material. Instructions are full of ramblings before you get to the actual question. His videos are very low/monotone and prone to even more ramblings than his instructions. On an A paper you get half a sentence what you did right and a paragraph of what was wrong. Grading is too SLOW!
He was a very fascinating lecturer and knew what he was talking about. Very nice, very pleasant teacher to deal with and will be prompt to answer any questions you have (is great with Canvas). Definitely would recommend the class.
Seriously, this guy is hands down the easiest teacher I've had so far. He grades every thing fairly easy, accepts late work, gives a lot of chances for extra credit. At first I went to class all the time, but in the middle of the semester I stopped going and I missed many days but I never got dropped and maintained my grade.
it's an easy class if you don't mind reading. abrams is super chill and late homework is always accepted, usually with few (if any) points docked. definitely the teacher to choose if you're planning on getting an english major-- he's definitely the most intelligent english professor on campus.
Abrams is a very intelligent and thorough professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and willing to work with you to help your grade as long as you follow his suggestions. LOTS of reading and sometimes he is intellectualizing so intensely that if you aren't alert you will get lost. If you truly want to learn, I encourage you to take his class.
His lectures are SO BORING. I was not engaged. His handwriting is also super messy, so I had a very difficult time reading what was written on the board. His expectations for assignments and essays were not clear; whenever I asked to clarify an assignment, his answer would be frustratingly vague and left me more confused. Would not recommend.
This teacher is super laid back and cool! His lectures are definitely the longest part of my day, but he is a really nice guy and knows what he is talking about. Most of the class you either watch TV shows or talk about the essays from the book that we "read".
Professor Abrams's essay prompts can at times be quite confusing and overly broad, but by doing that he provides you with the chance to interpret them however you want and respond to it accordingly. He gives good feedback when grading which I found to be very helpful when revising essays. Lectures are boring but he is definitely a great professor!
Barry's a great professor with a broad knowledge of English lit and you definitely work for your grade. The great thing about him is he assigns tons of revisions to the essays for credit and if you're going to be absent for an appointment or personal reasons, email him and it won't be counted against you.
Barry is probably my favorite teacher so far. If you're unsure about something: ask him. He even replies over the weekend! Allows you to revise ALL of your essays and offers extra credit. Lots of in-class discussions and you get to watch clips of movies and tv shows. Barry is a very nice teacher and gives you lots of chances to succeed.
Barry is totally chill, laid back guy. He gives little homework that was never even graded. He also accepted almost all late assignments and gave multiple chances for extra credit. His lectures were at times extremely boring, but an all around solid professor.
He is such a good professor and I really enjoyed his class. While he can be a tough grader, there are extra credit opportunities and revisions on essays that can improve your score. He also allows late work (for full credit) even on the essays. "Signs of Life" is used almost everyday, I found that the grammar book was unnecessary and a waste of $
Engl 1B was my second class with Barry and it was very enjoyable. Unlike some ABC/123 level classes I've taken, this class is truly a level up from 1A in reading and critical thinking. It pushed me out of my box and challenged my shortcomings with interpretation. It's still an easy A or B class if you put work into it.
Prof. Abrams class is the first class I have taken where I have thoroughly enjoyed the material and been truly inspired by the lectures. This is not an easy class but one can get a good grade if they dedicate themselves to their studies. Prof. Abrams is great about late work and letting students have extra time on tests. His classes are fantastic!
This is my second class with Prof Abrams. he is very laid back. Taking his class is basically like taking a online class because he posts EVERYTHING on canvas. i skipped atleast 1 class every other week and I've got a 94%. do GOOD on the essays. they basically make up your grade. he lets you turn stuff in late for full credit, even the essays!
He's a great teacher, and seems to really care about his students and their success. The only problem I have with his class is that his tests are incredibly long essay answer type stuff, but otherwise he's very flexible with due dates, extremely nice, and I learned a lot from him. Excellent class, would take again. (One group project)
Professor Abrams is a great professor. You have a total of 4 essays throughout the semester. He teaches visually. For example, with videos or using a book. He is a tough grader on essays only, but truly makes you into a great writer. He gives out extra credit at the end of the semester. Highly recommend.
Professor Abrams is a brilliant professor and a very kind man. His lectures are fascinating and intellectually dense because they reflect his own broadly encompassed understanding of the subject matter. He posts a tremendous amount of supplemental material on canvas - whole power point lectures, neat videos and items related to historical context.
I took Barry for both English 1A and 1B because he is an amazing professor. He is very clear in terms of what he wants out of an essay, and he gives great feedback. If you're ever unsure of an assignment, Barry is accessible to his students outside of class, and very patient and understanding. 10/10 would highly recommend.
Lectures tend to be rambles but he is clearly passionate about literature. Midterm and final are painfully long essay questions. Super easygoing about turning stuff in late- didn't do any of the work from February until finals week in May and ended up with an A in the course.
Abrams is clearly brilliant but his lectures are dull & complicated. His instructions for assignments are as nonsensical as his lectures. The midterm & final are in painstaking essay format. He will assign 4-5 long readings each night and only talk about ONE in class. Unfortunately if you're an English major, his class is unavoidable.
If you're an English Major, I'm sorry, but you can't avoid Abrams. The expectation of the readings assigned are no where near realistic. Even if you do the reading, his lectures are incoherent. Midterm & discussion prompts are too elaborate & unclear. A knowledge base beyond a 1st time reading of the work is necessary to make sense of the class.
If you're an English major there's no way of getting around taking this class. He rambles in his instructions for assignments & most of the time makes no sense. He is a nice man but the amount of work for this class is exponential & a little insane for a GE class at a CC. The midterm & final are in essay format and take about 4 hours to finish.
Pretty chill guy. Doesn't ask for a lot. Accepts late work up until grades are due/gives full credit for late assignments. Lectures can be long but his heart is in the right place. A lot of group conversations, be prepared to talk about certain discussions. Very understanding person, gives extra credit as well. Overall great professor.
Barry is amazing! This class is super easy as long as you do the work and show up to class. His love for English really shows through his lectures. He gives extra credit as well which is really cool. Overall really interesting class. 4 essays, some busy work but he accepts late work for full credit on homework assignments.
Be prepared for A LOT of information. Two large papers, group project, and 30 small assignments. There are a lot of small assignments, and online discussions that you need to take part in. His directions are unclear, and he gives you a lot of freedom to make your own opinion on the topics. There is a ton of reading, so read ahead. Hard grader.
Professor Abrams cares deeply about the subjects he teaches, but his passion leads to lectures and instructions that can sometimes be difficult to follow. He also cares about his students and responds quickly to messages. Many useful online course materials are provided. He's accessible and open to helping students. Difficult course, but worth it!
Professor Abrams is not a good online teacher. His style is clearly very suited to on-ground classes. His instructions are skimpy but his expectations are SUPER high for things like essays. Noticed multiple times on multiple assignments that NOT ONE person got a perfect score, which makes me think he was just being picky to be picky.
I love Barry Abrams as a professor to death, but his classes are intense. His lectures are more akin to complicated metaphysical spiritual journeys, so if you're interested in something lighter do not take Abrams. He also assigns a lot of reading per class (i.e hundreds of pages), and he is a tough grader, but there is a ton of extra credit.
Professor Abrams is, without a doubt, one of the kinder profs I've had, while teaching one of the hardest subjects I've had, in terms of how hard it is to stay particularly engaged in the material. Still, show up to class every day, take part in the discussions, and try to read or at least skim everything , and you'll likely get a great grade.
Honestly, he was an interesting teacher, at first, I did not like hi because he talked alot, but towards the end, I came around and like him. He really is passionate about this, and when you have your thoughts, he really considered your responses. I'm taking 46B at a different school now, and its much harder, I would definitely have him over agai
If you don't enjoy lectures, Barry may not be the prof for you. But if you do, he might be the most qualified person in the world for the Eng lit series at Sierra. Every day is a history/philosophy/criticism lecture that blew my mind. I still use my notes I took in this class for reference in other classes because of how good his lectures were!
Prof. Abrams, one of the best English teachers ever/He is very objective/Has opinion but lets you develop yours/Bridges secular/sacred lit brilliantly/Knows, loves Lit. and great communicator/Just wish more structured/needed prompt while reading cause the language is old/Love him to make all asnmts due on Sunday eve/It would give time to read.
Loved this class, the poetry part was a bit tough, and the essays were kinda hard, but he had annual zoom meetings if you needed help and he was really nice and answers emails quickly. The books were really interesting, and I enjoyed reading them. I learned a lot from this class and it was engaging with both the teacher and other students.
This class was pretty difficult. I only took two classes this semester, but even then it was a challenge to keep up with the reading, which was heavy. Prof. Abrams often gives extra points on discussion posts but is a tough grader on essays and exams. His videos are often really helpful and he gives detailed feedback. Answers emails very quickly.
Prof. Abrams' language is so sophisticated/quick it takes a second to understand, but he is wonderful! He include lots of materials so people who don't like reading notes can watch videos, etc. I had to turn in a few discussion posts late and he never knocked off points, he gives wonderful feedback too! Only two essays & 2 tests, very manageable!
This class definitely was an Easy A but omg he forgot literally all of the time to post assignments that we wouldve had a week to do, and bc he forgot he would post it like the day before it was due. Always behind on grading, but I guess a good thing is is that he was quick to respond to emails & he seemed like a nice guy. 4 Essays, 2 DB weekly...
If you don't do the reading, you will not pass this class. Every day was a group discussion about the assigned reading. His lectures were boring; very monotone voice that makes you want to fall asleep. I flunked this class because the content and his lecture style were mind-numbingly boring. I had to take English 46B the following semester.
Abrams is incredibly understanding. Took two different courses with him. He is willing to accommodate and good with responses to emails. The class requires reading and writing as it is an English course. I was not always a great student but passed both times.
I loved Professor Abrams for his clear passion he has on the topic of English Literature. He is VERY intelligent and knowledgable. However, the way he talks is very high style and hard to understand, similarly with his instructions for the assignments. It made it hard to know exactly what meaning we were looking for as he can be very esoteric.
