makes plants seem so boring...do we really need to know that much about photosynthesis
he was the most organized and easy to understand professor I've had in the science department yet...he made me take an interest in plant biology which I never would have been interested in on my own
No Comments
I felt he was a good professor, I really enjoyed his way of teaching. He was very clear and organized in his notes and presentations to us.
Awesome professor. Makes boring topics interesting and has a great sense of humor.
great prof. lots of good jokes. talks about good plant reality issues and maybe brings some to light. good tests, very representative of material.

barry rocks compared to the other bio teachers out there
bio is a very dense subject. bowman gives you what you need to know about it in a very straight forward manner. one thing that you need to know, he loves to ask questions about atp pumps.
I hated this class. Too much memorization. He expected too much and his notes were disorganized.
Good lecturer, boring, but organized and clear. Exams are short-answer and somewhat trivial. Study details from lecture notes, before studying the book.
Bowman is by far the best bio teacher out there. He makes everything so clear, and he is such a nice man. Everyone should get the chance to take a class of his.
This guy is really boring. The material up to the first midterm was really hard. But the material up to the final was easier. His tests are really tricky and there is no curve whatsoever. The final is not cumulative. Alot of material to know.
He's very clear and organized (one of the few teachers that'll write out notes instead of resorting to power point presentations), and tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams. The big downside is that he's really boring.
Bowman is a very good professor. I would reccomend studying his notes in depth rather than focusing on the book. His questions on the midterms and final are somewhat tricky. His jokes are lame, but entertaining. Overall, great professor.
Bowman's class was well organized, and the tests were purely based off his notes which he puts online. Some tests are tricky, but he curves. No dis. required, and no hw. Boring, but the material is really, really dry. Going to lecture is essential.
His exams are based on his lectures.. so attend lectures! He's a funny guy!!!
Professor Bowman is a wonderful biology teacher. He is not that boring (contrary to what some other people have said) and does a great job at explaining things. Highly recommended!
I love this guy! I don't think the class was boring at all. He has a dry sense of humor that slips in and keeps the class from turning into a drone a thon. I found the class to be easy bc it's so lecture-based --just go to lec and rd over yr notes!
not bad. one of the better teachers at SC. clear and organized. tons of material to memorize. tests are fair. lectures a little boring but on topics. good guy overall. effort needed class.
Barry was a nice guy who really tried to accomodate the huge class and difficult material. His geeky enthusiasm for the material was somewhat contagious.
grade made up of 2 midterms and final. be prepared for the final because its harder than he makes u think. nice guy on the surface, but very missleading as far as how one is doing in the class. classes were boring, and no humor. try not to get him...
Interesting guy. but the exams were way to hard.
hard tests. fun lectures. the final was horrible!
Cool guy. He made connections to the "real world" with most concepts which made class much more interesting. He was also very helpful in office hours. Study every little point, he has little detial questions on the exams that makes it vital that
Useless teacher...easy class...
Awesome professor. Concise and no filler! He explains everything clearly and genuinely cares about your progress. Read the material and go to lecture, you can easily pull of being the top 5% of the class. No trick questions, just all the key facts you need to know. I'd definately recommend Bowman!
He is an amazing teacher!! One of the best science teachers at UCSC. He is extremley clear, and really wants to help his students. Take a trip to his office hours, and you will be amazed at how helpful and approachable he is. Truley a pleasure to have as a teacher.
dorky, but fun to laugh at. dont really know how effective he was b/c i took class before
Eh, he's aight. His jokes are weak, he reminds me of Mr. Rogers...but he is a nice guy to talk to in Office Hours if you had a question or something.
teaching may be good, but his tests are labyrinthine.
The lectures help ply to show you want will be on the test. Reading the book is more effective for learning the material. The tests are hard and have questions on minute details. Also, the lectures are very boring and cause many people to fall asleep
It seems like studying doesn't make a difference. His tests are way too difficult.
Bowman is a great professor. He is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. Tests are not that hard at all but make sure you the study guide he posts on his website. People that say that bad stuff about Barry are idiots that don't belong in science majors.
worst teacher that ever exists!!
I studied for hours on end for each test and still failed. Also, on both of his midterms, the median grade was around a D, D- which says something if over half the class is failing. I would advise taking the class at a junior college...
Very helpful professor, he leads the review sessions himself, not through a TA. His class is pretty hard, and alot of information is absorbed, but thats the nature of a Gen. Bio. class. He is a great professor, and teaches wonderfully. Beware though, his final is way hard. Study the old experiments!
Barry is an okay professor. His tests are difficult, but if you study, you shouldn't have any problems. Learning details is very essential. Don't slack off in his class, because he does asks questions in a way that makes you think and knowing details helps a lot in the respect. I thought the final was easier than the midterms.
Compared to Feldman, Bowman was a freakin cake walk. What r u talking about person who SAYS they studied and failed? Dude, if you study his notes you will for sure get an A. He's very easy and his lectures were simplified and easy to understand!
he is the worst teaher ever....if you study for his tests you still will fail his class...very unfair
Took his class and studied A LOT, the 20 or so hours that he recommends per week, and still failed. Went to office hours which didn't help at all..His tests are crazy detailed. But he's really dorky cute, adorable really.
I worked my ass off and didnt pass
Prof. Bowman was pretty good. He was interesting in class and gave out chocolate bars to those in the front rows to demonstrate metabolism and glucose intake. However, his tests were HARD..and I studied ALOT for them. I went to EVERY lecture and office hours. I would suggest reading the book over and over again and memorizing it all.
I barely got a C but it's b/c I didn't study enough. His lectures point blank give you what you need to know. He loves what he does and does a FANTASTIC job doing it. You'll be hard pressed to find a better teacher.

yes his test was very DIFFICULT. but if you put the extra tmie and effort to review his notes and read the freakin book, you'll PASS!!!!!
man. eddie rojo here. i dont care what anyone says about this guy. Bowman knows hos****! Even though he tends to monotone it up a bit he's a Biology wiz and i trust whatever he has to say regarding any biological topic. he does solid research, cares about
Personally, although he might've been a good teacher or whatevers.. I didnt like his teaching methods really. I would suggest going to class, getting a tutor and seriously TRY to understand everything
He was very clear. His tests are extremely fair, and cover what he goes over in lecture. As long as you cover what he goes over in lecuture, the tests are do-able.
Teacher not educated well in teaching.
He needs to learn how to spell. Tests are fair if you read his review outlines and understand it. He's a good teacher, although sometime monotonous and rambling on and on about something irrelevant. Lectures tend to be comprehensive, so remember to go to all of them. Outlines are the most important as they will be all on the test. Read them!
compared to what i've heard about the other 20a profs, bowman doesn't seem too hard. his notes do suck and his lectures are pretty boring, but i think it's just because of the material. i just suggest reading the book. the midterms aren't bad, but the final was surprisingly hard!! overall, i thought his class was alright, and i got an A.
Told jokes that were so lame, they were funny. He posts his lecture notes online which are really helpful to study from. His tests are reasonable but not that easy. As long as you study and have a good memory, you should do well in the class.
Bowman was an awesome teacher, had some lame jokes, but they were cute and helped me study :) he needed a little help with his spelling, but he's a biologist, not a linguist, so it doesn't matter. VERY IMPORTANT TO GO TO CLASS! take notes on what he says as well as what he writes. His tests are not tricky, if you study his notes you should do fine
i prolly shouldve read the book-dont buy that special edition its a waste of money for his class. his notes were okay but u had to find out the basics in the book (get 6th edition or 7th). tests are okay as long as you reviewed the material beforehand-if you actually studied then you shouldve gotten an A - easy compared to Tamkun.
Best Bio teacher I have ever had.
Really easy compared to Tamkun. I did not like the way he did his notes at all...to messy and unorganized. Study his study guides before tests and you will do fine. His study guides are basically a summary of his notes. Not to bad of a Prof at all...espcially when compared to Tamkun
A pretty good porfessor. He truely cares about how his students perform-leads all Review sessions himself. Easy to talk to and interesting to listen to. His tests were generally fair and his material for the tests come directly off of his study guides. Great experience-take bio 20a with bowman!
Pretty hard class but Bowman made it as easy as he could.Exams are quite hard, he puts some tricks/twists into them.Somethings you have to know in great detail.Don't get fooled by some of the things he says; he told me a number of things that were on the exam that ended up not showing up at all, and vice versa. Overall ok class. He's a great guy.
Overall, he is an okay professor. Attend class daily because he occasionally takes role. Also, read the book and study his notes on top of his study guide in order to do well on his midterms. His exams are straightforward and fair. There are two parts- mc and free response q's. Also, section is not mandatory, so just go when you need help.
The subject is pretty flippin hard so you have to take it seriously. i went into the first test only having studied for two days prior and thinking i did awesome...i got an F. I went into the second test having memorized his study guide and taking notes on all the chapters in the book that were covered...got an A.
I loved prof Bowman. His lectures are very helpful but make sure you read the book as well. He gives study guides for each exam (even though the material is difficult) and curves if the students aren't doing well. No homework. He's a funny guy too and extremely nice. Make sure you take Bowman for 20A, you'll hate yourself if you don't.
nice guy. class included of print-out notes, which he would follow suit & write notes out as the lecture progressed, midterm and a final. I did horrible on the midterm since i didnt study however, i killed the final & got an overall B+; im ashamed i did badly on the first midterm.theres no reason to fail this course, goto class forthe inclass probs
disregard the BIOL 105 comment, i accidentally wrote it for bowman when it was for kamakaka
I had Bowman for Bio20A, loved him, and had him again for Bio100. He is an all around great teacher, even though the material is difficult. A good lecturer, and tells you specifically what to read. Fair grader and very helpful outside of class. No hw. 2 midterms and 1 final. Bowman rules!!!
hands down my favorite professor i have had ever in my life. i had him for bio20A and biochem and both classes were fantastic, he is really fun he makes class interesting. dont miss a class it important to go b/c your notes are key to doing well in the class and his study guides are also really helpful, very friendly to go to go to office hours!
Barry Bowman is an outstanding professor. He is very straight forward, wants students to do well, and loves teaching. He is so funny and is a joy to have as a teacher. Please take a Biology class with him, you will have the best experience ever. Bowman is amazing!!!!!!!!!! I was so fortunate to have him as a teacher for 20A and Biology 100
Very enthusiastic about teaching biology. He made things relatively clear and understandable for all.
I love Barry Bowman. He's an adorable man who obviously loves teaching biology. Don't pass up the chance to take 20A with him! His tests are difficult, but manageable if you study as much as you're supposed to. Best teacher I've had at UCSC!
Bowman's tests were all multiple choice, and if that's your style, then he's your man. I had a lot of trouble memorizing since he throws a lot of information at you, but if you apply yourself well enough, you'll pass.
His study guides are great to go through and understand, however he does deviate to a/n (lesser or greater) extent on the final, so be prepared to know the details. It is also important to write down what he says as well as what he writes, otherwise chances are you won't understand your own notes! Overall, he's a great guy and great professor.
Okay lectures, hard and sometimes confusing tests. Never really use the book. Study guides not helpful in the test, although it makes you feel like they might be but not really. Wouldn't take his class again, for anything!
I really hope your reading this Professor. He knows his stuff but has an extremely hard grading system. No HW. Grade based on Exams ONLY! Last exam, I believe the class avg was a 65 and a 70 with the curve! Are you kidding me? different questions on the test than what he puts on the study guide as well.At least give a decent curve with no hw grade.
Bad handwriting, confusing lectures. Have a feeling he doesn't care if students pass/fail. First midterm stats with 5% curve was like a 70 I believe. That means a lot of people failed yet he doesn't seem to care. Don't take this class with him. btw NO HW GRADE. ONLY EXAMS. Just shows he wants to just make people do bad or something. Disappointing.
Hard to understand him. Sit up front. His notes are unorganize, so make sure you read it carefully along with the book. Questions on exams are from study guide, but not the obvious ones. Very boring voice, sorry but I slept in class because of his voice. If you want to go to class, sit up front and have a recorder just in case.
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about, he's probably the easiest bio teacher there is out of all the other options. He is very helpful in office hours, and holds his own reviews. I feel like a lot of people except the questions on exams to be as easy as "2+2." Utilize section and MSI, and you will get an A.
His midterms and final are multiple choice and are detailed. He writes notes during lecture on a projector, but you NEED TO write the stuff that he says or else you wont understand your notes. Read the book. Know every detail such as what the things are made of, what energy they use, where it's located. He's very sweet but grading is hard.
Professor Bowman means well and I have heard is one of the easier Biology 20A professors, so if you have the opportunity to take him I highly recommend it! Pay attention to detail, take notes on what he says, and read the book for reference, his Midterms and tests are multiple choice, which can either hurt you or help you. Overall he means well.
Good nature, nice guy. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on your own studying if you want the A. 2 midterms and a accumulative final. Questions are relatively difficult but fair in general. Go to class and take good notes.
He's a nice guy. Gives you a good idea of what you should study. Helpful study guides. Some of his test questions are really asinine. If he mentions a specific number in class, know it.
I thoroughly enjoyed biochem with prof. Bowman. He made class interesting, was clear about the material we needed to know on exams, great study guides, lecture notes and exams were fair. I got an A in the course. Just read the book and use the lecture notes as guidance. Need help? He's very approachable! Take him. He's a wonderful teacher!
Terrible teacher. Had him for 20a and failed and then had him for Bio100 and failed. I just never understood his teaching style and tests were mostly multiple choice which if you aren't good at that it destroys your grade. When I retook bio20a with a different teacher I received a B no problem. Wait for another professor at all costs.
First off, Bowman is a VERY nice guy, however his teaching style is difficult to follow. Midterms are based off his lecture notes, but are not posted online. You have to go to class and understand what happened that lecture or you're screwed. He loves to write out arrows instead of writing down explanations during notes. Even with curve, it's tough
Extremely difficult class. His lecture notes are really hard to follow, and his lectures are confusing to understand. No practice exams, and his tests are unnecessarily tricky. No homework, and really random, difficult assignments. I failed the first two midterms, but god bless the curve. do not reccomend.
Although this course isn't taken as seriously as the 3quarter series, the tests were still challenging because you need to memorize a ton of arbitrary material to get an A. I did like his lectures. Simple and filled with fun facts about nutrition. He was very clear and is a nice, easy-going guy.
Just study the lecture notes and you will be fine.
Lecture notes were very difficult to follow. The class is doable if you put in a crazy amount of time into it or have previous knowledge of the material. I did my best and still received an F. Expects you to know specifics on the tests and every little detail. His teaching style just did not suit me at all. Would not recommend
Bowman's tests require you to recall a lot of specific information. It's all on his study guide. Just start early, and you will be fine.
Great professor! Very straight forward. Do the work and you will be fine.
Not sure why people complain about his notes because if you can't understand his notes with arrows, just take notes your own way so you won't be confused! Exams are easier than expected considering there's a lot to know. Study guides are practically a copy of his notes with more info. If you put in the effort and understand the info, you'll do fine
Bowman is a great guy with a genuine love for Biology. The reason the class is so hard is because there is just so much information to learn, and he can get confusing at times because he teaches it to us as if we already had knowledge of these topics. Curves the class at the end, easy to pass, harder to get an A. Don't be afraid of him, good guy!
Barry is an amazing teacher and one of the best I have had so far. He is super passionate about biology and really enjoys teaching. I would definitely recommend taking his classes! There is no homework and tests are not too difficult.
Prof Barry Bowman presents complex lectures and studies in simples yet standard terms, that makes you love and understand the course and study right from the hook.
