He tries really hard to make the material interesting, really nice guy.
This was a horrible prof! He was condescending and actaully seemed like he wanted students to fail. Class was easy though, I got an A
Pretty easy professor. Tries to make the material fun and he seems to care about the course itself a lot. Lots of scripted jokes though.

He's a very nice guy. Always reply my emails within a day. Tries really hard to make the material interesting.
Great prof! Organized, thorough lectures, easy to take notes for. Predictable tests - he structures his courses for success, and his sample exams will give you a taste of the real thing. Prompt email responses to questions. Great sense of humour too! :)
extremely easy class, everything is very straightforward, no surprises. He puts part of his lecture notes online so you don't have to copy everything down. exams are extremely easy. cracks lots of jokes...most of them lame
great prof like everyone else said, fair midterms and final (easy too), everything on tests is from the notes, didn't even need to study out of the text. funny guy too.
take this course if u want to upgrade ur gpa !!
great prof! tries his hardest to make the course interesting, is a fair marker, has pretty easy, sraightforward tests. Alhough, I think his joking sometimes makes people think hes very conservative and anti-left, but he's not. anyway he's fantastik
I liked him a lot. His exams are REALLY easy. However, you really need to go to lectures. His jokes are funny. Sometimes his lectures can be boring though.
He is an awesome prof. he is always ready to help the students, his exams arent hard if you study for them , and hes fun to be with in lecture. one of the best profs ive had at sfu :)
Nice to have someone who can speak fluent English and is willing to help. Very easy to work with. Made this course exactly as advertised, easy GPA booster.
funny, interesting and you actually learn. Seems like a hard proff at first but he's great.
The best professor ever :) He is very clear and very helpful. Makes the course very interesting. I love his lectures ! If you study, you'll do really well.
Something tells me he is in love with Karl Marx, Quinney, and Taylor, Walton, & Young. Any course he teaches will likely be traced back to Marx. Enjoy.
he's a really good prof. He makes the material interesting and throws in jokes to make it fun!
He makes a dull subject bareable. Clear overheads. Lots of notes though. Fair.
Semi-Interesting class that Barry tried hard to make enjoyable. Detailed notes that go along way when studying for exams. If you put the effort in, you can do very well in this course.
Makes lectures entertaining with his jokes. Exams are easy if you put the work in. He makes the subject fun and enjoyable.
Course material was a little dull, but Barry did his best to make it interesting. His jokes were hilarious and he kept the class thoroughly entertained. Exams were fair, and the TA's were helpful and fair in their marking as well. The course requires a significant amount of reading but his detailed notes will assist you in studying for exams.
Okay- someone please tell Barry that some of us are not straight from high school. He spends way too much time babying the class- is off topic frequently, and takes his sweet time getting to the point. Positive note- he's fair- up front- and is helpful. Wish he would make the lectures more challenging or stimulating, minus the bad jokes.
He's a funny guy, but his tests are a pain. I expected to be tested on concepts and theories, not specifically who wrote what book or theory.
great prof, good marker, an entertainer. However, I wish the course was a little more challenging or that we discussed some real life examples. but a super great prof, and Im glad hes at SFU
IF YOU WANT A GPA BOOSTER TAKE ALL HIS COURSES BECAUSE ITS AN EASY A. NOTES ARE WELL ORGANIZED AND GIVEN IN ADVANCED.
A clear and straightforward lecturer. Provides good notes and explains things in detail. Plus, I enjoy the fact that Barry looks like William Shatner. In fact, I would say that makes the entire class for me. Go Shatner!
Barry really is a great prof. He is very helpful, and he makes class interesting with his jokes. I highly recommend this prof
Excellent prof, excellent course, excellent material, what more could you ask for? Study his lecture notes for exams and you'll do just fine!
Well, he tries to be funny... to no avail. However, it does make his lectures differentiated from the average profs lectures. He may be short, but he is a good prof. Not just because his class(es) are easy, but because he does his best to field all questions asked. Also, he is very fair.
****!!!!!!!!!!
Very good notes for lectures. Lectures are interesting (tries to spice them up with the odd joke... not too effective) Midterm and Final cover range of different formats (M/C, T/F, def'n, longer answer) so everyone has a chance. Paper is easy enough. GOOD CLASS!
Barry is a great instructor. He makes the material interesting. He uses power point. Told a few funny jokes. I found the course to be really interesting. I highly recommend him.
I hated this class. It was the most boring subject matter and the midterm/final asked the most obscure questions not at all related to theories or anything. Paper was marked fairly but when I went to ask Barry questions about it he wasn't very helpful. WES ADAMS as a T.A. makes the class worth it-->best TA ever!
Funny/Nice guy, but class was quite boring even though it had so much potential to be great. His teaching method of using power point while students copy the notes is worthless and boring. Final exam was fair, but I'm not too sure about the mid term paper :S. Overall, I would give him a 6.5/10. I would take him again if I had to.
Easiest class ever. Just three words...........MEMORIZE THE LECTURES.
I think Barry was pissed at all the theories on bullies and youth violence etc. His mistake was he tried to hard to influence us to kind of agree with him. His material was vast and interesting but Barry was not at his best!
Very interesting lecs, but lots of writing in spite of printed powpt outlines. Lecs are mostly simple and clear, but sometimes confusing to study when ideas overlap each other all the time. However, there is a huge amount of material for the tests - with stats, authors, figures and even stuff from tutorial book. Its ok but not as easy as you think
Barry is your hero. Forever.
A useless class that serves as a GPA booster. Unless you are a cast-away that hasn't been exposed to 'the real world', nothing in this class is new or useful knowledge. Cartwright's exams are easy, but rather trivial. His lectures are kind of amusing because he tries really hard to be funny.
Very easy class ! All you have to do is go to the lectures and read the material once and you'll do well ... very easy exams!!
Very easy class to take. If you've taken any sociology class before, none of the material should be challenging. Tests are straight forward & paper is a breeze. Lectures notes are all you need to know to get a good grade in the course.
Course was a breeze. Everything that is testable is in the lectures. Do not overlook the course reader though; some of it appears on the midterm and final. Barry is a nice professor, but he rambles on sometimes in hopes for a few laughs. His partial notes and lecture methods should be THE standard for every university course-- very helpful!
So far best prof in sfu. Hope the rest of the courses with him will be as good. in depth n updated notes makes textbook useless to read. Mt n final pretty easy if u know the stuff. Common sense but lots of terms to mem. overall awesome course and stress free.
don't need to do the readings from lecture, for the tutorial, do em, they'll bring u up about a letter grade on tests. this course is EASY
He's a very neat prof, who designed a easy follow class structure, and fair exams. I strongly recommend people to take courses with him.
Take courses with this guy. He is a nice prof and sooooooo good to students. Not a curved courses, so everybody does well, all get A+. He is a friendly, and nice person. Take courses with him!
Really great prof!...Course material is pretty dry but barry makes it really halarious by making halarious and dirty jokes!. Do take this course with him....hes pretty fair aswell....got an A on my midterm and studied for only 2 days. Make sure u read the reader tho cuz most of the multiple choice is off the reader.
FUNNY prof. Some think he's lame, but hey, have a sense of humor why dontcha? I won't say the course is easy, (since he might see this and make it harder for the rest of you), it was overall FAIR. Don't slack though, as the midterm results showed, it is possible to get an F.
awesome prof! one of those hidden gems you wish you had every semester. very very helpful, funny, and entertaining! powerpoint lectures, copy the notes and memorize them. you won't need to read your text. leave at least a week to study prior to exam. stay for the review...most of the exam stuff is the review material
What a great prof! He is so organized, provides notes on Web Ct, doesn't add trick questions to exams; is really helpful in class and during office hours; has quite the sense of humour, which keeps the course from being so dry; and he'll help you to plan your future in criminology. Study notes, text, reader and you'll get an A - guaranteed.
Barry made this course as interesting as he could. The material was dry and he did try to make it fun by making some jokes. The midterm and final wasn't that difficult as long you put the effort to study. His notes are all you need to study in order to do well in his course, highly recommend
super nice proff, just show up to class and copy the notes and you'll dp fine. material is some what interesting. Overall, a great professor that jokes around, would take a course with him again for sure!
What can I say--Barry is the best (and easiest) professor I've had so far. He is organized, somewhat funny, and is clear when instructing. Print the partial notes, attend lecture, study, and you are guaranteed an A.
I loved this class-- and Barry is just great. His lectures are interesting, his exams are fair enough. His T.As are fantastic. I was never really interested in criminology, but my opinion totally changed after taking this course. I felt like Cartwright was very professional, and helpful and made this course fun and interesting. Excellent prof!!!
(i'm still in the middle of the semester) fantastic professor! very funny, loves what he's doing, hates youth offenders and is in favour of the electric chair (LOL)! just print out his overheads and fill them out in lecture and you'll pass the course. midterm exam was pretty easy, the essay topics are ok, TA (Raegan) rocks.
He tries to make a lot of jokes, but they aren't funny. Ultra conservative opinions. Really nit-picky about word usage and referencing in papers, but marks pretty easy considering. Provides partial notes online so you don't have to write so much in class. Given the choice, I wouldn't take another class with him, but it was a decent experience.

This class was great. Really interesting and straightforward, lectures are not boring like other 2 hour classes. Just go to class and take the notes and that's all you'll need for the final!
Barry Cartwright is a very organized teacher. He asks very straightforward questions on his exams, no tricks. Show up to class to copy the notes and study it for exams. There's no need to to study the textbooks; they're only relevant for the paper. You'll do very well if you memorize his notes.
I really liked this class. He was humorous, making the lectures interesting and easier to follow. I would definitely go to lectures because the way he sums up the material makes it much easier to understand. I would recommend this prof to anyone, and he doesn't take @*#* from anyone, which is a benefit to people who are actually there to learn!
Barry makes his lectures very interesting even thought there are tons of notes to copy and memorize. He looks like a cross between Willaim Shatner and Bilbo Baggins. This course is pretty easy as long as you copy the notes and memorize them.
Barry is an awesome prof! I would take his course again any time!
Barry is a great prof. His lecture notes are extremely helpful and the course itself is interesting. One of the best class I have taken so far at SFU!
If you attend ALL lectures and study the notes you will rock the midterm and the final. Work hard on the paper and you should get atleast a B+ in this course. I highly recommend this class. Take any classes with this prof!!!
Awesome prof makes the lectures clear and easy to understand. Also makes it interesting so you dont fall asleep in class. Midterm and final was no surprises, go to lectures and pay attention for sure youll get a good grade. I would take his class again anytime.

Barry is amazing. His tests are straight forward and simple. No matter how hard you try not to learn sth, you will leave his class having absorbed some information about criminology.. It was said that ppl will literally pay you to drop out of his class so they can take it themselves.. now I know why
Awesome
midterm was rather easy. lectures had good notes and he made jokes that were actually funny sometimes. material is boring though. only take this if you have interest in the material. if you get john as a TA RUN he will kick your ass in your essay
This class is a joke. Actually all lower level crim courses with him are but they're great gpa boosters. He makes dry material interesting and kept me amused with a few jokes here and there so he's a good prof I suppose. I'd take another course with him. oh yea go to lecture, ESPECIALLY the review for the midterm and final
Being in Barry's class is always fun. He has a good sense of humor which can keep you entertain during the entire lecture. His exams are fair and easy to work with. Overall, take any courses with Barry and you'll guarantee good grades as long as you work hard and stay on track. Also attendence is mandatory. Highly recommended for any students!
Barry is a great prof! He knows his stuff really well. His notes are great and vrey helpful with studying. Always attend lecture! Barry tells awesome jokes. His exam and paper are very fair.
You have to do a class presentation in the tutorials. I'm not good and do not like doing presentations.
He's awesome. Funny, know how to make lecture interesting. As long as you attend his lecture, and study his lecture notes, you will do GREAT! I just love his classes..can't wait for next sem. to take other courses w/ him
Barry is extremely helpful as he answers his e-mails quite quickly and is always available for help during office hours. He prepares you in your future courses well with a short term paper, which he said once he is doing it for students' goods. Exams are easy as long as you read his lecture notes. Course reader is a must because he tests on it.
This was my 3rd class with Barry at SFU - he's one of the best professors I've ever had. Highly recommended! Very helpful, highly respectful towards his students. Asks us for future suggestions to improve his teaching tactics. Good sense of humor - fair marking, fair assignments. Finally, a professor who knows how to teach :)
Awesome Prof! Theory can be pretty boring, but Barry manages to make lectures interesting and entertaining.
DEFINITELY take this class wtih barry, EASY midterm EASY final (as long as you study) - realizes that we have a life outside of class so for the review day he narrows all of his slides down to just the ones that are covered on the tests - if its not on the review its not on the test. Replies to emails quickly and is also a pretty entertaining guy
THE BEST CLASS I'VE HAD AT SFU! WILL DEFINITELY RETAKE WITH THIS PROF!!!!!!! TA KELLY BOHL IS AWESOME TOO!!! =) A+++
Great professor, really funny, keeps the lectures interesting, and makes it very clear what he will be testing, no surprises. Learnt a lot this semester.
Not a huge fan of his, usually had troubles staying awake in the class, but I think that was more of an issue with the room's temperature and my schedule than him. It was a good experience, I don't think I'll take another crim class though.
WHAT IS EVERYONE SAYING? THIS PROF IS SO HARD...HIS EXAMS ARE DIFFICULT, HIS LECTURES ANNOYING, AND HE ALWAYS THINKS HE IS RIGHT...I DONT KNOW EVERY RULE IN LAW OK BARRY?
LOVE this prof, lectures are interesting and LOVE LOVE LOVE his notes! i didnt even buy the textbook, i went thru the course all from his notes! Just go to class and LISTEN to him! i got 10% in my midterm (my fault, i didnt bother attending class or rememebering the date of the midterm)... and i got a B+ at the end!! =D just remb to read his notes!
Way too specific of a marker for a first year course. He also makes so many politically incorrect comments, save your time and money!
Freakin' love this prof. Hilarious and easy to understand PowerPoint slides. Stuff that he says will be on the exams, will appear EXACTLY THE SAME (word-for-word from his notes) on the exams. Easy grade or GPA booster.
Very good professor, knows what he is doing, is very entertaining and is willing to and wants to help. I recommend taking any criminology class with B. Cartwright.
Very easy course, pretty much everything he said on the review will be on the exam. Easy prof, recommended =)
he actually reminds me of a hobbit...maybe even Bilbo Baggins...haha..class is easy if you listen in lecture and study his notes THROUGHLY!!(HINT HINT)..didnt need the textbook as what is tested are all given in his notes..lectures are a bit slow and quite a bit of notetaking as only the lecture outlines are given..overall a potential GPA booster
Lecture notes are posted online, but there is still a LOT of note taking. Marking and exams are fair. Lectures can be rather boring though.
Took his crim 101 and 131, funny prof, materials are not that interesting but easy exams, all based on notes. some of the questions are from tutorial presentations, unless you are going to read every article, i recommend go to tutorials.
Prepare to learn nothing in class, there are way too many notes to write down while he talks in the background. Why can't he provide them (they are powerpoint)?! Other than that, he is a nice guy and knows his stuff. Fair/easy exams, you DO NOT need the textbook (only the tutorial book). Just take notes from his notes and you'll do great.
Dope prof. Tells jokes, really easy, exams fair, interesting lectures although a lot of notetaking
What can I say? This guy is the best prof at SFU and everyone should experience life w/ Barry at some point in time. Great prof, easy exams, interesting lectures, great guy!
CRIM 300 is a writing intensive course, which scared me at first, but the way he had divided the total mark for class made it possible to compensate if you dont do well once. TA was hard on marking though, which made me a better writer!! GO to lecture though, if you dont you miss a lot
I LOVE this prof! best prof! he is very funny and easy, but! have to memorize the stats mentioned in lecture!! make sure u attend lecture be4 his exams, he'll do a review showing all the slides that wud be tested on exams! just memorize them!
This guy is the champ!! Recommend him for sure
AWESOME PROF! such an easy class! he pretty much gives you all his lecture notes you just had to finish the sentence and thats about it. I did my term paper the day before it was due and got an A+. I highly recommend this class and prof! the exams are SO easy, i finished in like 30 mins and he is pretty funny too
Great lecturer, provides outline of lecture notes online for you to fill in during class. Low textbook usage, I didn't read past the first chapter. His TAs were ultra-helpful and fun. One complaint - movies in class are totally unrelated to material!
Too easy for words. The short answers are a little more tricky though.
good prof.. gives half of the notes, you have to fill in the rest. not a bad class. easy midterm. he shows you the slides that will be on the midterm when he does a review. look over your notes and use the text for extra understanding - only read over stuff that relates to his notes.
Very entertaining professor. Take his class and expect a stud muffin.
freaking awesome, great prof, funny, turns driest course into something worth taking. kinda reminds me of a shorter version of dirty harry, least he dresses like him. Apparently he was/is in a band
Barry is by far my favorite prof at SFU. I have taken 3 courses with him & plan 2 take more. If you don't study the notes & attend lecture your screwed. Exams are very fair, if your not good at T/F or M/C you can make it up in the written & definitons. Mark Lokanan was a really good TA. Take 220 with Barry if you can. Makes dry material interesting
This class was one of my favorites at SFU! You need to go to class for notes - I would say bring a laptop instead of printing out the outlines. Midterm Review is helpful and the exam is right from the notes. One thing I didn't like were the debates that we had to do - reading them were long and boring and not enjoyable at all. Good class though!
One of the most awesome profs you'll ever have. if you have any class lined up with him teaching, take it without even thinking.
Barry is fantastic!!! He makes the dry material of CRIM 220 very interesting. Attendance in his classes is a must as he mainly tests on his lecture notes. Replies e-mails very quickly and is extremely friendly when you talk to him face-to-face. Take his courses because you will be rewarded with good grades if you put the effort in. A+ professor!!!
Barry, to be honest, is an useless professor. You learn nothing from his class; midterms and finals were ALL based on his lecture notes (he even tells you which section is going to be tested on and which aren't). If you're not a crim major student, then by all means, take courses with him. If you're a crim major student, find another teacher.
Fair tests and lectures are interesting.
BC is very nice and sweet old guy, replies to emails/Qs respectfully. His tests are REALLY hard on definitions and in lecture you spend more time finishing his notes (u can print half the sentence) then paying attention. He focuses a lot on names and info that doesn't seem important. But he gives lots of chances to get free participation type marks
Very interesting lectures. He is so funny and he jokes around a lot. But his exams are BRUTAL. THey cover SO MUCH material ...
Term papers are marked easily and Barry will actually edit it for you if you go to his office hours. Exams are easy if you study the lecture notes (he tells you what slides to memorize). Very detail-oriented, but not hard to memorize. Only problem was iClicker quizzes. Some questions asked were useless/irrelevant. But loved the class. Barry rocks!
WOW looks like he has devoted his life to making his courses fun, interesting,& easy gpAboosters! Made me laugh throughout lecture & tutorials, and even when I got my marks back (always got more than expected). To get an A, I just studied review slides day before the exams, wrote term paper in less than 2 days, and did the reading before tutorial.
Everything mentioned in the final exam review class is on the exam. With a written take home midterm, term paper, presentation, and final, was a lot of work for little payoff (20% per component). Presentation and participation were too highly weighted IMO. Grade (except for final) depends on TA. Wish there was more overlap of lecture and readings.
Exams are MC/TF/Short-answer/paragraph. Need to memorize names, dates etc to get a good mark on exams. iClicker quizzes are straight-forward - just read the book and memorize the names/dates. Bring a laptop with you, unless you like writing notes non-stop for 3 hours since they are mandatory for passing.
Gives his students all the necessary tools to do well in this class. Do not buy the text book because you will not use it. Just make sure you attend class and take down the notes. All you need to know for the mideterm/final exam comes from the class notes. Make sure you remember dates, names and stas for the exams. Overall, great prof!
Have had this course for crim 300 and 104. His text are easy just re-right notes he gives but papers are tough so got to the ta before you hand in to make corrections before you get a back mark. Enjoyed his classes
Great Prof! Tries to make class interesting! You need the tutorial book for iClicker tests and also your project. Attendance is essential! You need the notes which he only gives you half of the notes online and in class he fills them in! exams based on notes! Great teacher and great course!
Great teacher. Straight forward tells you exactly whats going to be on the midterm/final plus its all straight from his notes. Don't need the main text book but boundaries is mandatory as you get quizzed on it every tutorial. Tries to make the course interesting by adding in jokes. Highly recommended for GPA booster
Great Prof! Exams are all based on lecture notes. Hard marking TA. If your TA is not Barry/ Mark, you better drop this class. I got an A on mid-term but ended up a B-. (I used to be an A student) Good luck with this course
He taught me how to take care of my iclicker.. His tests weren't too bad. All the stuff is straight from the notes. Lectures were entertaining except for the 3 hrs of note taking! Good prof overall!
I've taken three courses with Barry (101, 131, and 104) and hope to take more with him in the future. He provides excellent notes, and gives you a heads up on which information will be on the midterm and final. Study what he highlights and you'll ace them. Also just a friendly, well-humoured guy.
Great Guy! No point in reading the textbook as his tests are based on his lectures. Funny guy and provides great (but a lot of) notes. He helps students succeed.
i took 131 and another intro with him and i loved it. very funny and easy class. exams mostly based on lectures but still read the book (esp. for his 104). overall i would love to take more classes with him!
The required text was totally irrelevant.I bought one because it was required, it turned out that we don't use it at all.I went to sell it back but they said that a new edition is coming out and that they don't buy back this edition anymore. What a total rip off.If you're taking this course DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK because you will not use it at all.
gotta put in a lot of work for this class. 2 8page papers marked pretty hard. final was pretty easy compared to all the course work. overall very dry material, barry tries to make it interesting. difficult class but will do fine if you put in the effort. make sure to get a good TA for the class though
One of THE BEST profs in SFU existence. His tutorials are straightforward and clear. His exams are fair. But best of all, he is quite a character. I'm surpised he didn't audition for some sort of 80's TV programme like Cheers, Taxi, or the Beachcombers. He needs to be on TV! Makes lectures interesting and sums everything up before exam.
HILARIOUS PROF!! makes a lot of jokes. class is relatively easy, i'd definitely recommend it as its quite interesting. take this class with this prof!
There's lot of reading to do in this class. But overall, it's a great class with a great prof!! He's extremely funny during classes. I would highly recommend you to find him whenever you have any questions, he's always there to help you. (especially for term papers) Listen carefully on what he says that will appear on the tests, cause they WILL!!
Barry is probably the best prof I've had at SFU. He is funny, clear, engaging, and certainly knows his subject very well. He actually makes me want to go to lecture! His notes are very clear and exams are mostly based on lectures. I also loved the online tutorials.
Absolutely amazing teacher! I had this course with him and was two hours long, but every time it would feel like a one hour course! Never missed a class because it was so fun, and he is very fair! Would hope that all other Crim courses are taught by him. In both my yeas here, best professor by far
One of the best professor that I have ever had at SFU. He is very clear about what he is talking and what you should learn from the course. In other words, he is an excellent communicator. The classes are never boring. It's like learning and enjoying both at the same time. I think he should be awarded as the best prof of all time at SFU.
tries to make a boring subject entertaining with his powerpoints. good prof and a fair amount of assignments.
His lectures are really interesting!Barry is a great prof. He is willing to help you if you go to his office hours. One downside in his course is be ready for iclicker quizzes. He gives an iclicker quiz every single class. The quiz is based on the tutorial readings
Funny and helpful, i actually looked forward to his lectures. Eaasy peasy course, i highly recommend it.
Barry is the gold-standard for awesomeness. His exams are very fair and based almost entirely on lecture slides and Boundaries. He prepares students very well for exams, and his essays are not insanely hard. A funny prof who makes material easy to learn. Easily the best prof I've ever had. Looking forward to taking another course with him.
Took this class as an elective and it wasn't too bad. He's a great prof, very entertaining and knows his stuff. Quizzes & tests are super fair. The essay was alright, marked a bit hard in my opinion - focused too much on format. Take it as an elective!
Easy. Straight memorization but the course material is absolutely useless and hard to retain. Lectures are long and boring but exams are fair/easy. Paper was simple. Take it as a GPA booster. Never opened my textbook once.
One of the more demanding core courses with 1 short paper and 2 - 8 page papers. Your mark depends on who your TA is, since they are marking your paper. The presentation/participation marks are easy marks. His final is just like his other exams; and read the articles and pay attention to the movie he plays.
It was my favourite class yoooo. Rowdyyyy and heccctic broooo
Great, definitely recommend another class with him. How all profs should be like
Barry is the man!! Put so much effort into the online tutorials and they are so beneficial. If you take him your term paper he will edit to give you a better mark. Seems like he loves to teach and wants you to do well.
Amazing prof, very entertaining. Course content is quite boring and useless but his exams are mostly based off of lecture slides. Exams are fair and easy.
soooooooooo great
Professor Cartwright is terrific. His lectures are clear and hilarious, his online tutorials are really well-done and an excellent study resource and he's a very nice guy, always willing to help or try to boost marks. I wish I could take every class with him.
Barry is a funny guy, but extremely boring as a professor. He does not even seem interested in what he is teaching so how can anyone else be? Really did not enjoy this class, especially when Hilary Morden was my TA. Hugest nightmare of my life.
Barry is the ideal prof, he's funny and intelligent. He encourages students to visit him during office hours because he really does want you to do well. Midterm, term paper and final are all fair and straight forward. There are no surprises. Excellent professor, would recommend him to anyone.
Nothing negative to say, he is just great. TAs were tough though and the course content was boring as hell.
Took the online course. Very well structured, clear, no surprises. He's funny even through his lectures. The course does cover a lot of material, so you really get what you put into it. Would definitely take either online or regular class with him again.
Easy to follow lectures. Exams are fair. Easy online tutorials.
Loved this course. I was sceptical about taking an online class but Barry's online lectures and tutorials were excellent. If you put in the effort to study, you should have no problem succeeding. Study his notes, memorize the flashcards, and go back through the preliminary assessments. I would recommend this course to anyone.
The way this course is set up is that IF you put in the work and take the time to learn the material, you will succeed. Unfortunately some students do not take advantage of the golden opportunity of taking a class with Barry. He's the best CRIM prof hands down
Barry is a great prof! His exams were very fair because he specifically tells you which slides to study from. Although his lectures are boring, they are mandatory to go to as there are iclicker quizzes at the end of every lecture. The term paper was marked a bit harshly but that was only cause the TA's marked them. Overall, I'd recommend him!
BEST Prof ever! Extremely approachable, organized and knows his stuff. Exams are very straight forward, you study and get an A. I would take all the classes he offers. He puts in a lot of effort to make the class a good experience.
He wasn't helpful. Never responded to my emails and was very belittling when I talked to him one of one. But his class is super easy. The only time you really the book is to write the paper
A part of me did indeed underestimate the workload involved with this class-but I didn't find this course as easy as most people describe. I found the lecture & tutorials extremely dry and boring. If you are not interested in this topic, or in sociology/criminology altogether, I suggest that you reconsider taking this course.
He makes criminology really interesting because he tells a lot of jokes throughout his lectures and keeps people listening. The only problem is that since his classes are so large you can sometimes just feel like part of a crowd. Also, he provides lecture outlines beforehand but you have to fill most of it out.
I took the online class and to be honest I learned absoluty nothing. The whole class is based on essays. And they dont really give you an opportunity to prove what youve learned. Not recommended at all!
Must attend lectures to earn your 20% tutorial marks. Exams were somewhat difficult, or at least more difficult than most expected. Average was quite low (as well as on the term paper) and he had to scale up. Overall, you'll either find the course very interesting or quite boring. Depends on your interest in cybercrime
Say bye to your GPA, also be prepared to be belittled every time you email him.
Lecture are not interesting with lots of note-taking. Online tutorials are even worse, but they are easy marks to redeem yourself. Be prepared for EVERYTHING for the exams. Average for the midterm was 66% and average for the final was 59%.
Hes generally an okay professor. However, he was unhelpful when he pointed out slides that will be on the exams. He put stuffs that were not on the slides, and I ended up getting B+ on the midterm. I studied EVERYTHING for the final and got A+. TAs were also unclear. For the essay, they gave general comments and did not point out important errors.
Worst grade I've received in a University course. Terrible TA who marks way too hard for a first year course. Expect to know even the most obscure of subjects for the tests. Better yet, DO NOT take this course or prof.
I don't know what happened with him between these 2013 and 2015 posts but Dr. Cartwright's lectures were incredibly boring and unhelpful. Course is too hard for a 1st year course and I'm a third year student. When asked to revise a grade based on an error in the system, the TA said she wasn't allowed and Cartwright wouldn't look over it. BADclass!
I took CRIM 104 online, the lectures and material were very straightforward. Easy A if you put in the effort. I've heard a lot of good things about Barry and he's well respected in the crim community. Would definitely recommend this prof!
in a 2 hour lecture was usually able to cover full topic, but few times carried over to next week. very easy to understand and clear.
Great in the sense that he tells you EXACTLY what he is looking for and expecting. But absolutely no help in questions and no sympathy given. Afraid to ask questions during the lecture or even emailing him because it is true that he will belittle you whether it's in front of the whole lecture or through email. Comes off rude sometimes.
Took this class online. Agree with person below, not helpful at all, does come off as rude and the TA has the same attitude. If you don't like or care to ask questions, then Barry is a great lecturer and he is very clear in his slides and tutorials. You get a 0 if you click 1 wrong thing in the online tutorials. Avoid
Took as an elective and LOVED this class. E-tutorials were nice, easy marks. Cartwright is hilarious and good with timing. Marking is easy to fair. Lost the most marks on citations (but that's on me) on the term paper. Midterm and final are structured the same - mc is meh, tf was hard, written was super easy and casual.
His voice can put anyone to sleep.
You will not enjoy the lectures since you have to take notes all the time! If your tutorials are online then get ready for more readings and hard tutorials. Instructions for the paper was not clear enough which made me get 50% on it and I worked very hard for it. Overall I hated this class and will never take his classes again.
Barry has really become more tough since starting my undergrad. In two years his classes have gone from a gpa booster to a gpa tanker. I would definitely take crim courses with a different prof.
Lectures are long and you'll be taking lots of notes. Had weekly online tutorials which were pretty easy. The midterm and final exam were very fair. There are some textbook questions on the exams but I got away without reading it and aced both tests. Overall, it's a pretty easy course but you obviously have to put effort in and study to get an A.
Very enthusiastic and knowledgable about the course material. Online tutorials had some tricky quiz questions so pay attention to the details. The course is set up for you to succeed. Show up, write down the notes, memorize and you should do well in the class.
CRIM104 online is very well laid out and clear. Barry does a great job of covering important info in his 20ish minute recorded powerpoint lectures. The tutorial power points have study questions which are all I used to study and for the weekly quizzes. The readings aren't really needed. Midterm and final are very straight forward and marked fairly.
Overall a very good prof. Knowledgeable, funny. Specifies what is going to be on tests. Online tutorials are very good reinforcement for what you learn in class. The only bad quality is that his powerpoint slides are like wall text. If you can get past that you're gold.
Lectures are entertaining as he's hilarious but he's a very tough marker when it comes to tests. For that reason I wouldn't take this class with him. Lectures are clear
Hilarious prof!! So funny, and makes lectures actually interesting. Final exam was brutal, long answer questions was about documentary watched in class, so make sure you go over the notes!!! Online tutorials don't exactly help prepare you, and can be a drag. Term paper was fairly easy, materials and criteria was laid out for you. Review tutorial !
Barry is an excellent prof and like others have said, the course is set up for you to succeed. Exams are extremely fair and easy if you thoroughly study the slides mentioned in the review. Tutorial review is important and the textbook is only necessary for the term paper as lecture notes are very detailed. He's the best professor I've had yet!
Go to class, take notes- word for word. Memorize and regurgitate verbatim on the exam. Don't bother reading the textbook, you might miss 2-3 marks on the multiple choice, but the tutorial can explain the theories to you in a much succinct manner. The tutorial is your friend, take your time to go through it. You need the textbook for the paper.
Don't bother reading the required articles for the lecture (no textbook required), but read the tutorial articles 'cause you got those iclicker quizzes to do. Note all his iclicker questions. Great prof, funny. No idea why I took this course, too much effort for the credits I received. Make sure to take good lecture notes.
He is a really fun and outgoing guy. The course itself requires a lot of memorization. He tells you everything that will be on the midterm and finals. Best way to study the for test is off the powerpoints he shows in class.
Most hilarious professor ever, easily makes jokes about everything which keeps his lectures interesting. Always offers his own time for office hours if help is needed, the responsibility to ask for help is on you though. Tough grader for papers but midterms and finals are easy enough if you attend class and do the tutorials.
Dr. Cartwright is fairly knowledgable. The textbook is mandatory as are the lecture slides. The tutorials are extremely easy as is the actual content in the course. The term paper was straight forward and the marking was fair. There were no surprises on the midterm and final. He is very engaging in lecture. Easy course if you put in the time.
Basically the lecture before the class he'll tell you which subtopics from the notes taken from him will be on the test. Easy A IF you study!!! I wished I tried harder, would've been a great GPA booster. No textbooks needed for test, but needed for the term paper.
he is a hilarious man! Even though his class is like 400 people, but his humour makes it a bit more bearable. His midterm is not too hard, as long as you study his lecture notes, you'll be ok. Term paper is graded a bit harder. His online tutorials are easy marks too!
Keep up with reading the textbook and taking the online quizzes. Lots of material covered but he gives midterm and final exam reviews that really help narrow it down
Barry is an incredible and hilarious prof! He has so much knowledge about what he is teaching, his lectures are EXTREMELY important. Go to them, take notes, read the textbook, and you will have an easy time passing the course and doing well on the online tutorials.
Really tough grader...
Online tutorials are great for learning, easy marks too, seems like a waste of time but it is WORTH THE TIME. Lectures are clear, great speaker, easy to follow. He is a hard marker for exams and covers EVERYTHING on the exam so it is very hard to study. So funny. Very knowledgeable. Don't need textbook to study, but do need it for the term paper.
Super-easy prof for 101 and 104; in fact both of these classes are EERILY identical with each other in terms of content, lecture outline and the tutorial components. Best way to study for the tests is the powerpoint slides and reviewing tutorial components (flashcards especially). I would 10/10 take a class with him again in the future.
Barry is one of my fav prof in SFU hands down. He's super hilarious!! If you can choose a prof to take, get into his class because u won't regret it! The material in this class is pretty interesting. His tests are also pretty straightforward if you take good notes and put in the time.
Great lecturer, keeps you engaged and has a good sense of humor but his exams.... Studied for a week straight for both the midterm and final and still failed both! regardless of how much i knew (Which was quite a bit because another friend of mine has taken the class with a diff prof and helped me study) the questions where hell! Wouldn't take tbh
very funny, easy to study for
Barry Cartwright my favourite prof. His lectures are very detailed and informative, he has a clear voice and doesn't stray off topic. He gives outlines for the midterm and final. The textbook isn't really needed, but it's nice to have to understand things better. He is extremely approachable, I suggest going to him for help with the paper.
Great prof, makes sure to give students enough time for people to take notes during lectures. He knows his stuff and you can tell he has taught this class before. However I did not like that he did not give the grading criteria for the essay. Makes it hard to know where you could improve and/or if you were graded fairly.
Though he tries to keep the class interesting with funny slides, his use of politically incorrect terms made the class atmosphere uncomfortable at times. In addition, when having asked a genuine question via email, I received an unnecessarily sarcastic email not fully regarding the truth ( after having asked an advisor).
Cartwright was a decent prof. Tutorials were online and were a review of the lectures. We had a midterm, paper and a final. Skipped a few lectures, did the paper the night before, studied for both exams the night before and received a B+. So the course wasn't so bad. Exams were detailed though, so I would recommend studying more than I did.
No clear criteria for the way papers are graded and no legible feedback whatsoever, and the exams are mostly about unimportant details that are impossible to remember. Lots and lots of reading. The lectures were very inappropriate at times. In general - needs to retire.
this class was really easy, he posts half the notes online so you have to come to class for the other half, you don't need the textbook because the class right before the exam he'll tell you exactly which slides you need to study, exams are easy if you study, online tutorial is also easy, the term paper was kinda hard tho
The class material is very dry and hard to read but Barry makes lectures fun. He has a great sense of humor and cares for his students. Relatively easy class if you can make it past the boring content.
I took introduction to special topics: cybercrime with Barry. He is a great prof and really funny! He let us chose which test format worked for us. The tutorial grade is half participation and half quiz based from the readings. The only thing is he can be kinda quick with the slides - so warm up your typing fingers prior to class. But defs take him
Make sure you show up to lectures, because often his slides contain blanks that are not posted online which means lectures are mandatory if you want to get the notes. He's good at explaining the concepts, but more often than not he's just reading off the lecture notes that are already filled in. TA's are rude.
Super easy grader. Textbook not needed other than for the paper. Everything is given in lecture, and he tells you 70% of what's going to be on the exams. Quirky sense of humour that may offend some people.
Easy A if you show up to class and take lecture notes. Tons of theories to memorize but he tells you exactly what will be tested on the midterm and final so it shouldn't be too bad. Term papers are marked quite hard though and it is worth 20%. Overall, I really enjoy having this class as an elective.
pretty nice dude makes lectures interesting by injecting some humour. the online tutorials are very dry and pretty much say the same thing as the lectures but they're easy marks. his lectures are very information dense so get ready to write/type a lot. tests and papers weren't super difficult but make sure you start studying in advance.
Barry is a great prof and it is clear he has taught this course many times before. Lectures are very dense so get ready to write, but he does keep it entertaining with lots of jokes. Online tutorials are easy marks and the term paper was not difficult. Midterm and final were very fair as he tells you exactly what will be on it. Would recommend.
First midterm wasn't overwhelming because I studied too much material that was not being tested on. Tip to anyone who takes crim 101 is to note down EVERYTHING he says and shows during the review sessions cuz it WILL be on the final. He directly told me that when I was going over my midterm which I did poorly on. I ended up with an A on the final.
The class is quite boring and so are his tutorials. If you pay attention in class and the tutorials you will be ok. If you want higher then a C+ I suggest you read the textbook, as almost all of the multiple choice questions of my final were about various things in the textbook. Also, you have to be able name & explain theories he talks about.
NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!! Honestly is so rude, won't answer your questions, will literally send you an email accusing you of cheating if you ask for help. Crim 101and 104 are literally decently easy classes if you stay on top of your readings, but Barry makes it unenjoyable, and his online tutorials are boring.
A LOT of typing/writing so be prepared in lectures. Other than that, it's pretty boring but he does try to throw in a joke here and there which makes it slightly better. The week before the midterm/exam, he will do a review session and everything he says will be examined, so just studying what he tells you to is enough for getting a decent mark
The class is fairly easy and boring but Barry throws in enough jokes to make it more enjoyable, he gives you the slides to study for both the midterm and the final so lectures are mandatory but the textbook isn't.
Fantastic prof! It is quite difficult to catch up if classes are skipped. If you study the material the tests are fair, no tricks or surprises.
I enjoyed this class so far the mid term was really easy if you pay attention in tutorial and lectures. A large part of your grade is participation which can easily boost your mark. The lectures are clear and he gives time to take all the notes needed. You do have to attend but it isn't painful to sit through.
Tests are based on lecture and tutorial slides, he's funny and interesting (even thought he mostly just reads off his slides).
He goes over basically everything you need to know in lecture, be prepared to take notes though. Doesn't post anything online so you gotta show up unless you wanna read the textbook. He gives plenty of time to write everything down and does review of everything you need to know for the midterm or final the lecture before.
Interesting professor. He tries to put humor into the lectures to make it less boring and difficult. His lecture notes are heavy so beware of that. 20% for participation for tutorial seems peculiar. He does not upload lecture notes. To fairly put, nice course but wouldn't want to take it again.
Laziest prof ever. Did the bare minimum to run a course, 2.5 lectures were literally just Hollywood films. That said, easiest A+ ever, and you don't need the textbook because his lecture slides are just a regurgitation of it and he doesn't test on anything more. The paper was a godawful topic (but short).
Pretty funny guy. Makes the 2hour lecture more bearable. Exams were SUPER easy and straightforward. If it wasnt for my paper that pulled my grade down dramatically, I wouldve received a solid 98% in the class. Definitely recommend
Funny guy who tried to make the more boring material funny. Tests were super straightforward and based on memorization. He highlighted all important material for us in the lecture before midterm & final. Textbook needed as not everything covered in class was in enough detail. Notes posted online are only outlines, must attend lecture for full notes
The only thing you really need the textbook for is for your term paper otherwise everything you learn in the textbook is covered in lecture. Pretty much everything you need to know for the midterm and final is in the notes, so as long as you copy down the slides you are good to go. He doesn't post the slides online, but he gives you note outlines.
This is the second class ive taken with Barry and he is my favorite prof. You need to attend lectures and take notes, but if you do you can get an A. His tests are fair and easy to do well on as long as you attend lectures. He cracks some jokes and tries to not make it too dull.
Barry is a GREAT prof. No tricks on exams or papers and a VERY generous marker. You have to come to lectures and tutorials to achieve your grade but class is not difficult. The TA's were really approachable. 10/10 recommend!!
He's a really good prof, but he doesn't post his slides so students have to attend the class. Tut attendance and participation are really important. Before each exam, he does a review of important topics, and if you memorize that review you can get 100%. What you get on your paper depends on your TA (hope yall get a nice TA :D)
Barry is nice and passionate about what he's talking about, tests aren't too hard if you read what you're supposed to and pay attention in class. Talks about important things in class that you don't get from the textbook and his lecture notes that he posts online aren't completed so you have to go to class to get the information!
Intriguing lectures and very funny guy! He sets out clear expectations for the class and sticks to it. You have to memorize a lot but the info isn't difficult. One of the best crim profs at sfu
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. CRIM 101 WILL FOREVER BE MY FAVOURITE CLASS. I can't even stress how easy this class is. Just memorize all the notes absolutely no need to do the readings. Start studying for the midterm and final 1 week in advance memorize 1 chapter's notes per day and you will get an A I promise you. Make sure you memorize ALL the notes.
Dry lectures, be prepared to type 3000+ words every lecture and do not bother reading the textbook. Just remember his slides.
You definitely have to read and memorize to do well in this class but he doesnt trick you, his tests are exactly what the notes are and he grades pretty generously. He always has good TA s. You dont need the textbook and hes hilarious.
I took both Crim 101 and Crim 104. Loved Barry in both. He's an amazing teacher and goes into depth with his lectures. When lecturing he'll make jokes (like sending the TA's up to the students that talk during lecture to beat them) and have funny pictures on the slides to keep students engaged. Would definitely take his classes again.
Hands down the best crim prof ever. Extremely easy as long as you attend lectures and tutorials for all his notes. Barry keeps everything simple, and you have to be incredibly dumb or lazy to fail his course. BONUS- he's hilarious
First things first, he's pretty funny, and it makes the lecture not so boring. He tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on his exams. He only posts parts of notes online, so go to lectures. The exam is based on the review slides he shows in class, but also bits from the textbook about that slide that you wouldn't know if you didn't read it.
Has a clear teaching style and a good dry sense of humor that brightens up the lectures a bit. Exams were fair so long as you take notes during lectures, since he mentions specific things that will be on the exam. Definitely recommend the online course, it's one of the more straightforward online ones I've taken
Barry is one of my favorite professors. His lectures are clear and he WILL tell you what to study for both the midterm and final. The textbook is only needed for the term paper. Overall an easy class if you show up and take notes!
Barry is one of the nicest and funniest profs you'll ever meet at SFU. He's a fair marker and also goes over the exam itself before he gives it the next lecture. Focus on the slides he tells you to focus on because the exam is mainly focussed on that but don't forget the other parts. Definitely recommend taking this course. Wish he taught more.
Just show up and copy the lecture notes. That's all you need for the tests. Participating and showing up to tutorials is a significant portion of the mark, do not skip these.
Barry's lectures are dry and focuses more on the theorists, than theories. You MUST learn and study in a certain way that doesn't encourage you to think, just memorize. You get marks off for not following the rigid tutorial rules. He even tells you what pages you MUST cite in the essay! If you have a brain and like to use it, find a different prof.
