Mr. Falk is a great professor! He gives practice exams which are pretty much the test, so if you study you should do well. Your effort determines your grade. He gives out pop quizzes, but they are exact hw questions and are open book. So, if you do your hw and take decent notes during lecture you should be fine. I would 100% recommend him!
The lectures are clear and he makes sure everyone understands the material. There are 4 exams and the lowest grade is dropped. Attendance is not mandatory but there are pop quizzes so show up for class anyways. The quizzes are open notes, not open book so take good notes and understand the HW and you'll do fine. Provides hard formulas for tests.
I enjoyed the class. I had to work alot to catch up at the beginning but after I did I really felt this class improved my math skills. Mr. F is fair with grading and makes sure to stop and address any questions when students ask them. That being said, he does move fast when going over examples. I recommend him as an instructor.
Mr. Falk is the best math professor at NOVA! He is laid back and makes everything fair for students. His lectures are easy to follow and his tests are not bad as long as you study. Not to mention he is handsome as well :)
Fair grader, addresses every question you have with clarity, very helpful, everything covered in class and in HW's will be in the exam which means no unexpected surprises (study guides provided). Makes math seem easy, overall i would totally recommend him! HE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR!
THIS PROFESSOR IS FREAKING AMAZING. please take this class serious and give him all the respect he earns it!
Great Professor. He may scare you in the beginning but don't fall for it. He is actually very caring and helpful. He will make time to help you out with your difficulties. He goes through each example question thoroughly and provides several of each. Pop quizzes are fair. Exams are fair too. Just study and you will be fine. He does give extra cred
He's fantastic. Always there to help, very approachable. Show up for classes because of pop quizzes (he gives rough not exact dates of them). Drops lowest of 4 exam grades (including final). 92% before final or more can skip final exam. Can usually have notes for quizzes. Best math professor I've had so far.
GREAT Professor. Take him. His class is an easy A. His teaching is really clear and he is always there to help. He gives quizzes from the homework he assigns and they r open note open homework quizzes. He drops the lowest of the two quizzes and the lowest of the 4 exams. Though if u get 94% and higher u have the choice to drop the final exam.
Mr. F is awesome! He makes the class fairly easy by giving open note homework quizzes (questions are exactly like the hw) and study guides for tests that are just like the tests except with different numbers. He is funny (and cute!) and guaranteed to make you laugh at least once. Oh and he will pick on comp sci majors but he means well
My favorite Math professor Period. In taking Mr Falk I have learned so much about Calculus and he has showed me far more efficient techniques that make calculus easier such as tabular Integrataion which make integration by parts uber easy. Hint, do your homework, its mandatory to pass the quizzes, Else you wont pass.
I'm so please to have taken him as my professor! The class was small so he was able to focus on the students concerns. If you pay attention and put effort into the class, you will definitely achieve a high grade! He post practice exams (that are similar to the exam) and doesn't test you on material that hasn't been covered. Take him :)!!
Professor Falk was a very good teacher. Even though I am not good at math, I still did really well on the tests since he posted practice tests online. For my math class, notes were allowed for quizzes. Drops the lowest test and if you get 93 and above on all tests you don't have to take the final. Material is hard sometimes but overall a good class
He's ok, if you want easy and not learn too much then take him. I am currently taking MTH 173 and struggling with some trig concept that he didn't go over. :( If you want an easy 'A' take him but will learn little. Dig em'
Mr. F is by far the best math professor I've ever had the pleasure of having. Definitely not an easy A. Efficient teaching style. The tools are there, utilize them. Always willing to help. Very clear and concise. Nice lectures, gotta do work on your own outside to fully grasp and retain material! He's a super cool guy too - I like his demeanor.
Awesome Professor! Best math professor I've had! Takes time to make sure everyone understands material. I had taken precalc in high school & didn't understand much but he made it so much easier using his methods. Homework is optional but he gives hw quizzes that are straight from the homework questions so do it! Posts practice tests before exams!
Awful! did not learn anything. Does not care whether you learn or not .
Mr. F is great. He's very knowledgeable and is always willing to help. Homework prepares you for quizzes so make sure you do them. The awesome part is he gives practice tests which mirror the actual exam. I can actually say I've learned a lot. He's funny and clearly very intelligent. Do all your work, study well, and you have a guaranteed A.
Here's some advice for those taking MTH 173. If you just want a grade and not learn the material then take this class with Mr. F. Just be advised that when you take MTH 174 you will struggle like I did. I am took MTH 174 was not fully prepared. If you want to be challenged and learn something take with another prof. Mr. F class fills up cuz easy.
Did the hw and studied, got a B. Standard professor, really.
He was such a good math teacher. He makes sure that you understand the material before moving on but only if you care. If you seek him for help he will definitely help you out. Not a lot of graded work given, but he does give you problems to work on.
best advice I can give you is if your in the manassas campus take Prof. Quarcoo. Mr. F. grades you on very little things, homework is not graded, lectures are rushed. Test are pretty much the only things graded. Maybe I just couldn't learn under his style. Good luck if you take him.
I don't understand the reviews saying this class was so easy it didn't prepare them for later classes. I have to completely disagree. You are graded by few things but he is always willing to help. Lectures are great, they are the verbatim of the concepts FORCING you to understand the material before you work with it. Practice exams are a blessing
I am definitely NOT a math person, but taking Falk's class made Precalc & Trig so much easier to understand than in high school. He breaks everything down and works through plenty of examples. He even goes over homework questions when asked. He is not a hard grader, and even cracked a few jokes to keep his 9am class interesting. He is great!
He's an okay teacher. At least he doesn't do proof of every formula and tells you what you need to know. He's a bit disorganized though and he's a bit sarcastic. Study a lot because study guide are not gonna help you on the exam.
Best Calc professor I've met by far, love the lectures, really tries to help students understand. Very approachable, answers some questions beginning of every class. 4 rough exams, drops lowest score exam. Online homework, in-class easy quizzes. I recommend Mr. F for someone that wants to actually learn and understand the maths.
I really didn't learn anything in his class. In fact I am thinking about re-taking it with another prof. If you are lazy and want an easy 'A' then take him. If you want to learn something there are better options out there. Easy prof does not imply best prof.
Prof F is a very sarcastic prof it's pretty hilarious to me. He isn't a bad professor but his tests were pretty tough, he gives study guides but they don't really help. Homework is on webassign which is okay. He does help you if you come to him during office hours and will let you know if you should drop his course and not make you feel bad if so.
dont know why i didn't withdraw. he doesn't know how to teach, his explanations are unclear and is so unorganized. I would skip his class to teach myself because the textbook had better explanations. his units are out of order, he'll quiz you on what you learned the unit before then give an exam the next class about the current unit. So confusing.
Mr. F is a really cool dude if you the class is involved and talks to him and makes connections. His class is one of the hardest but most educational i've ever taken because he makes you earn the grade that you get. He does gives alot of points in test and quizzes. Has 8 Quizzes, 4 test ( drops lowest test and 2 quizzes)
Mr. F is at best an average prof when it comes to teaching and explaining the material. He makes mistakes when working out examples and even his tests have typos. In terms of difficulty, the class is ok and he does have a clear grading criteria, but at times is unprofessional with grading and will take off random points. Beware of pop quizzes!!!
It's honestly hard to find a good math professor. Professor Falk is honestly one of the best at Nova. In the beginning of class we go over homework, then start lecture. He posts practice exams with solutions that are very similar to the exams. There are 8 pop quizzes that aren't too bad. Not an easy A, but attend class and its very possible! 10/10.
Hes good at explaining himself during lectures, but his tests and quizzes suck. Quizzes have 2-3 questions and tests 5-9, and gives difficult problems. So if youre not the best at math good luck. You screw up 2 questions you basically fail. His final was supposed to be cumulative, but the questions were basically all the same with no variation.
He did a good job teaching us the material, he followed the book very carefully. He does tend to make mistakes on the board and isn't always good abut answering questions, especially if he feels like you should already know the answer. Semi-interesting lectures.
Took him for Precalc & trig. We did the online program called "ALEKS" where he gave ALOTS of hw each week. If you know the basic idea of math take him. He make you work hard for your grade. Definitely suggest him to those who are going with CAL1&2. JUST REMEMBER YOU HAVE ALOT OF HOMEWORKS TO DO EACH WEEK. After all 4 exam. Drop the one lowest.
I appreciate his patience and humor. Unfortunately, he makes mistakes on the board frequently, but he always makes sure he figures out the problem, and will send the solution online. I do think that students give him less credit than he deserves though. He answers all the questions you have in class, and is very casual in his teaching style.
I took his class once a week and it actually made it easier for me. 3 hour long lectures are a pain but it was better than taking it twice a week. He is a good professor, he knows how to teach the material, don't be afraid to ask questions he encourages it. Maybe intimidating at first, but just don't fall behind and stay on top of everything.
I was 3 points away from failing PreCalc but I passed calc with a B and I SUCK at math sooooo yes take him. He is the best math professor I've had at NOVA. He makes calc seem so easy and understandable, plus he's hilarious and always makes lectures go by so fast. Really the best professor.
One of my favorite profs at NOVA. He's sarcastic and funny, and explains difficult concepts in an easy way to understand. His homework isn't too bad, and his pop quizzes are open-note. Pretty chill guy, loves math but knows that we have other classes we need to take care of so he doesn't make it excessively difficult. Take him!
Professor Falk was very knowledgeable and he explained the material clearly and if you needed help, he was there to answer your questions. Three exams and he drops the lowest
BEST MATH PROFESSOR! Had to take this class a second time, the first was with a different professor who wasnt as good. His grading is super fair and the weights are perfect. 4 tests including final, drops lowest. Then a series of homeworks online hws through aleks, keep up with those and itll help you. Great at explaining. Seriously, TAKE HIM!
If you want an easy A then his class is perfect. His class was pretty easy and final exam was a breeze. If you are going to engineering or math then I don't suggest his class because he doesn't go into that many details. Since I was taking this class for fun than it was ok for me but if you want rigor I suggest taking someone else.
Professor Falk creates great lectures of mathematics. He is willing to go fully detail in his explanations and ask for questions about homework at the start of every class. His grading expectations are also accurate. However, there is this homework software called Aleks that is the very complex and time consuming for many students! Beware of ALEKS!
Just had Professor Falk for a Summer 6 week class. He was always very helpful in explaining any questions that I had. He also genuinely cares about the subject that he is teaching us.
I took him for Calc 1 and he makes way too many mistakes on his practice exam, solution to exams, and even in class on the board. His exams are somewhat okay as long as you study the practice exam and take good notes in class. 3 exams , drops 1 out of 3, and 1 final exam. Oh and he's also very rude and looks like he's in a bad mood half of the time
The worst professor I have ever seen. DONOT TAKE HIM EVEN THOUGH THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL IS 2.8. He will give you pop quizzes out of nowhere, no extensions on homework even if you a legit excuse. Study guides are easy and entirely different than exams, which are way harder. I had to retake calc 1 again.
Started semester by putting students grades up on the board to show how canvas worked, so expect next semester to see your grades. Told all business students they don't need to take 161 & opened & closed assignments within a few days, so expect your HW grade to hurt in busy weeks. Tests focused on minuscule portions of units. TAKE WESTERHOFF!
Mr F is a good teacher if you're a natural learner. It's best to take his classes if you learn well by example. During the beginning of class, he goes over any questions anyone has, then the rest of class he goes over concepts and through lots of sample problems. Take notes! If you take awhile to understand topics, consider a different teacher.
What can I say about a professor who cant solve the problems he sets for HW. He takes forever to grade the exams. Tomorrow will be our final and we didnt receive the grade of the last exam. Above all of that he gets annoyed when someone asks for the grades. This professor needs to find another job. I wish the dean of NOVA can read this.
I dont know how I qualified for this class because I forgot basic algebra by the time I did this. I was very close to getting an A, so I would say this is a good class for anybody. The Aleks program that he uses allowed me to put a ton of hours into practicing and learning from basic math to completing the entire curriculum.
So I didn't even attempt to take Professor Falk past syllabus day. He told the class something along the lines of "at the end of the day I still get paid" it really put me off. There is no extra credit and honestly, he just seems like he does not care for his students. If youre not gonna be kind to your students and show you care, find a new job.
great professor. i took a 6 week summer class and it went very well. all of the homework & quizzes were on ALEKS and tests were done on paper (submitted by emailing pictures of your work). we went though material pretty quickly, but the ALEKS homework really helped me understand the topics better. do all the work and you'll get a good grade!
Easy A online class. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking an in person class with him- he's very passive aggressive and rude. Online zoom meeting attendance wasn't mandatory which is very nice. All homework is on Aleks, I didn't watch a single zoom meeting and passed the class with a high A. Exams were done on paper then turned in through email.
Awful teacher. I learned everything on Aleks. He takes FOREVER to grade exams and doesn't put Aleks homework in grades until the last day of class. I have no idea what my grade is and he takes more than 3 weeks to grade one exam. Also, he started off the semester with basically saying he's doing this for the money. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
So he replaced one nova professor for this class who got sick. He noticed we were behind and helped us get on to track and was great at explaining during his lectures. His tests are difficult and not as similar to he study guide. Gives a lot of HW in aleks and drops the lowest test score out of 3 during the end.
His examples during lecture, equation sheets, study guide solutions, and study guides are consistently filled with mistakes. Then he put a mistake on an exam that wasnt noticed during the exam. He admits this is due to watching football games while writing them up. nobody cares about your puppy or ur dead dad. do your dam job better; arrogant mf
I took this class for Spring 2021 It was tough the material was relatively easy but the professor gave us only HW for practice and he removed all Study guides saying that students are cramming. Then the president allowed the class to be held in person and we were in the middle of the pandemic so I withdrew from the class and I do not recommend it.
This is the deal - He has you use the Aleks program and it's a lot of homework. If you are willing to do all of the homework and teach yourself with the aid of the program then you should take this class. I just did the homework and I would get As and Bs on the tests. He has good study guides too! He can come off as pretentious but it's ok.
Never gives feedback to students. He uses this program called ALEKS to assign like a million things every week. He is extremely rude to students in emails and in class if they ask questions. I passed but I didn't really learn anything. If you can, please take a different professor.
This man will literally take weeks upon weeks to grade exams, I took his class over the summer and didnt receive an exam grade for a previous exam until the day of the final. He will commit every ounce of his being to catch cheaters, it is apparently his passion. However he does explain things well so if you pay attention in class you'll be fine.
This guy's slightly crazy. Don't take his class over the summer. He takes an insane amount of time to grade tests to the point where we've taken the final and have no clue what our grades are. He promises grades being up on certain days but then doesn't put them up- unfair not giving students the chance to know how they're doing before drop date.
I couldn't even get past the 2nd class. First off, he wont use the online grading portal . He has an excel sheet with everyone grades on it (no names just student IDs). He doesn't update this sheet at all to AFTER the drop date, so you have no idea how you are doing. His I don't care about students attitude turned me off form day one. AVOID HIM!!!
The worst experience I've ever had. We didn't get our exam scores until after we turned in the final. He is rude and inconsiderate. Only 3 people in my class passed. He will accuse you of cheating regardless if you did or not. He will not be understanding towards you, and will not take any excuses. If you're good at math, you might survive.
Professor waits until the last minute to grade your work so you don't know how you're doing until the final. Also if he sees one small detail on your exam that looks like it came from an online source he will give you a zero on the exam. Cares more about finding cheaters than grading your work in a timely manner.
He's super incentive and eats during class. Doesn'tput in any effort to be any nicer than he is forced to. Bad handwriting combined with a faster than nessesary class pace causes him to make countless errors during lectures where he straight up will not be able to give you the answer to a problem, teach you the wrong method or not explain his work
He is a native English speaker, but he mumbles during lectures so I often found myself lost in his explanations. Takes months to grade tests and is not lenient. Everything from test grades to announcements always seem to be behind schedule with him. Several times where he wrote something down in bad handwriting and then it messed me up later.
I would definitely not recommend taking this class, it has been a tough experience for me so far, throughout my High School career all of my teachers were caring and understanding people that would take time to help their students achieve their goals, I CANNOT say the same about Mr. Falk. If you can please avoid taking this class.
Prof. Falk is a punctual, effective teacher. Goes a little too fast. His higher level math courses are challenging because of quantity and quality of the subject, so you should only take him if you have a math brain and a good memory. Attendance is NOT mandatory but helps greatly if you want to pass. Grades considerately but does not curve. STUDY!
Very tough grader, not a single student ever got a max score on any of his exams, like it was his mission to keep us from earning top marks. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you miss one of his pop quizzes it will significantly hurt your grade. Your best bet is to learn the material before class.
This class is not an easy A, but I will say that if you put in the effort to do the homework, you will be fine. He was willing to take some time to clarify any confusing topics. If there are any confusing questions on the homework, ask about it in class! Don't be shy everyone's probably just ask confused (that's how I survived calc 2).
During lectures, he goes out of his way to explain what we may have forgotten from previous math classes which is helpful. Another thing is that he is good using analogies to explain the unit then building on them with examples. If you have a busy schedule or cannot manage your time, beware of lots of homework due each week. Otherwise it's not bad.
Professor Falk was a great professor throughout the semester. The only complaint I have is that he submitted grades last minute. Other than that, he explains subjects pretty well and drops your lowest grade for your quiz, homework, and tests which were very helpful for me to pass the class with an A. Make sure to study too!
He isn't the worst but also isn't one of the best either. He takes a very long time to grade things. Grades are mainly based on exams. On exams, he does not count bonus unless we specify in writing and wants us to use bonus to replace questions with the same value of points. Attendence is not mandatory therefore not graded though.
I've taken him for calc1 and calc2 as well, and I will definitely take him for calc3 as well because of the way he explains the concepts. Calculus is hard in general so it will take a lot of work. There will be a lot of assigned homework but they definitely help.
Professor Falk is a great teacher, his explanations are easy to understand, and he knows his stuff. He teaches valuable lessons, and will prove any equation you ask him to prove. He believes curving doesn't reflect a true grade, and although attendance is not required, he does keep track of who attends. He speaks perfect English.
Gives 4 exams. He doesn't do extra credit, takes long time to grade, study guide doesn't always have same material on exam, he goes fast through lectures. I do think he grades his exams fairly, he doesn't give you 0 if you get answer wrong, he gives points for doing work. If you study & don't procrastinate, you should be able to pass the class.
Professor Falk is a good instructor and has extensive knowledge of the concepts. He will gladly repeat concepts anyone missed. He is direct. If you have not taken an algebra class for a long time, do not take his class, or any condensed version of the class. Partial points are given for correct concepts when showing work. He takes long to grade.
Prof Falk takes off 25% if you miss an exam date - do not be sick for his classes. He goes fast through lecture topics, exams include "extra credit" that acts more as a bandaid than a boon. His teaching style is fine but he is a harsh grader and relies heavily on ALEKs to cover the content he does not teach in class. Do not recommend.
He only focuses on the important things. If you truly listen to hi,, you will learn. He sometimes tells you stories related to the topic which makes it fun and you learn better. He always asks if people have any questions about the HW and he would literally solve it with you. He gives you points for your work even if you get the answer incorrect.
Great teacher for if you actually want to understand the material and don't just want an easy grade for requirement. I would recommend him to anyone who needs to take Calculus II or above. The homeworks are long but there are only 7 and they really help you understand the material. Only major negative is that he is VERY slow to grade.
He didn't have the syllabus ready until after the first week of class finished but had the audacity to tell us we "didn't plan our time well".
Any bad review about this professor doesn't understand that he wants people to succeed and like doing things his own thing. He is fair with the quiz and homework and he helps me out a lot when I need it. He was patient and very fair.We took like 4 quizzes counting the final and they were very short quizzes and he had the option to replace a section.
Look I won't lie this class is hard + there's a lot of homework, Mr F does pretty boring lectures but he's definitely knowledgeable and is willing to work with the students IE cutting out work hw extending dates etc. His tests aren't easy but he doesn't make them impossible either, drops lowest, far from worst mth prof at nova, but you have to try
The professor was very nice. I learned some good review about calculus with the class. I'm glad I was finally able to pass it too. Homework was okay, and I managed to do really well on the final exam so, not a bad class. Had to do Webassign for the homework.
Great professor
Personally, I would not take him again. Study guides are nothing like tests, he's slow at grading and never responded to my emails.
By far this is one of the worst math professors I have ever had. I tried to be open minded but he grades the test so slow. I don't even know what I got on my 3rd exam so I dont know what grade I need on my final to pass the class. Dont let me get started on how much ALEKS homework he gives which takes over an hour to do.
He is a good teacher but his teaching style wasn't the best fit for me as he moves quickly As a result I had to rely heavily on myself rather than his lectures. but he does offer extra credit on the exam allowing students to replace a section and he drops the lowest scores from the tests quizzes and assignments. hv 3Q 4 tests and 8 homework A.
He is nice and means well, but his teaching style is very fast paced and it's very difficult to process the material he's teaching.
He taught really well but did not do good about our grades as we only had our first two exams in for grades for most of the semester. Alex hws are all due on one day, and the 3rd exam was being graded while we were taking our final, was a good teacher but does not give feedback and is a really bad grader and not very organized.
He is such a math teacher lol—straight to the point, no-nonsense type of person. He's a great teacher and will explain things even if they're not related to class. His style is unique; I like it, but it's not for everyone. The nature of the subject he is teaching requires him to be a bit tough on students and as students we should understand that too
To summarize, he is a bad PROFESSOR. Did not help students, even when they verbally showed they were struggling in the class *cough*. His exams were on the hardest things learned and he expects you to know every ounce of the unit taught. Takes long to grade them. As a person, he was very cool. Any bad review you will see is accurate. Beware!
This professor was okay. The lectures were average on teaching style and it seemed common for students to miss his class over time. I fortunately was able to do well on his exams and the webassign assignments. (Also what probably helped was that I had done this class before with a grade of a C but attempted again with this course) :)
Awful to say the least. Studied and tried so hard, even reached out for help because I was struggling. He did not not care and will watch his students fail. Take at your own risk.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever taken. He re-uses old tests from previous classes as study guides, but they barely cover any material on upcoming tests. There is like 3-4 assignments a week.
