Dr. Gidcomb looks like mighty mouse. He makes U either do 15 hours of community service or watch like 5 night lectures. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
BORING!
nice major democrat. i am a republican so i do not agree with all he says but he does know his subject. if you are a major right wing conservative and can't keep your mouth shut then avoid taking him if you can.
Very good teacher, makes the class interesting and fun. You have the entire semester to pick from touring four historical sites and writing a 300 word paper on each, or doing 15 hours of voluntering at an historical site. He gives you the questions that you have to know for each test.
L-I-B-E-R-A-L! he knows his history. teaches it well, does go over what is on the test. also gives you extra "trivia" type facts, but if you conservative he also adds in the "liberal" view as well. something to consider before taking him.
Good teacher, knows his stuff, and he is funny.
He is one of the best teachers anyone would want to have. He makes sure you know what will be on the teat.. spoon feeds it to you!!! He knows what he is doing and for those who do not like him, its probally because you didn't try. #1 Teacher

Wonderful teacher, really enjoyed his class. Will be looking forward to taking more history classes with him.......PS I don't think you look like Mighty mouse!
Bleeding heart liberal but the very involved and educated about his subject. Truely cares about the education of students.
Excellent Instructor. He uses a varity of learning methods to reinforce the lectures. He has the ability to teach to the test. Loves political cartoons and jokes. He is very helpful if you have a problem in his class.
Good teacher you will know somethings about History when you leave his classroom
Dr. Gidcomb was by far the best teacher I've ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed his class, and he made history so very interesting.
He seems a bit awkward and uptight at first, but he is a nice enough guy. He does his job well. He knows how to teach, and his organization of the lecture is excellent and easily attainable to students. I also liked it because he opened my eyes even more to the corruption of the government, and the problems of America.
Could not have a better teacher than him. Very dedicated to teaching his students.
I must say i never wanted to take history, I hated history in high school. Dr. Gidcom made his classes interesting and fun...I would love to take another class he teaches.
I love this class. He is so passionate about History and it shows through in his lectures. He is very organized and teaches us the facts. These methods draw me into his lecture, and at the end of class I want to hear the rest ans not have to wait a few days. I recommend everyone to take this course, and if you don't pass, well you screwed it up yourself he gives ample extra credit and you know exactly what is on the test. Looking forward to the Natchez trip, finally a class with an easy and interesting A.
I love this class because he is vey passionate about History and it shows, it really brings me into his lecture.
He was very enthusiastic about his teaching, however he is very opinionated and the lecture only covers a slice of what the test is over. So overall, he makes it interesting, BUT, there is a lot of work involved in very simple class. An easy class made hard
He is very passionate about history. He does express his personal opinions (to a degree) and wants you to be able to make informed opinions based on facts. His assignments are easy and serve a purpose. There really is no reason you should fail this class. He maps out everything. Pay attention to his lecture and you will do fine. He's great!
Makes history as exciting as you can get with it. Only thing is the lectures cover 1% of the tests but he gives you study guides so you can get through the textbook faster. Gives extra credit. BE PREPARED TO READ THE BOOK
Great teacher! Very helpful. You can really learn a lot from this class.
Awesome teacher. Really loves history and knows a lot of facts that can't be found in the book. If you read the book and answer the questions he gives you, you will do great on the tests.
Nice guy but not a favorite choice for a teacher. Spends way too much time on his own political beliefs and self accomplishmints and not enough time teaching the actual history. Makes attempts at humor but not very funny. If he would just teach the history he would probably be okay.
He is so boring! Make sure you have caffeine before class! Have to read the book and answer all the study questions and take notes from the lectures. if you don't you are in trouble!!!!
Mr. Gidcomb is a hoot. :) He gets so excited about history, and that's good for a history professor! He has a project that you must complete... either do 15 hours of community service (basically), or visit a few historical sites and get a tour. He's really a good teacher, you just need to do your work, and you'll be fine. Bad class for slackers.
Mr. Gidcomb is super easy! He pretty much hands you the test, all you have to do is answer the questions. You do have to read the book to find the answers but they are easy enough with little effort. The only way to fail his class is to be a LAZY student or not to show up. All tests are mutiple choice with 1 essay question, that he gives you.
I really enjoyed this class. Mr. Gidcomb has a lot of knowledge that he shares with you. You will learn in this class. Stay with him and pay attention. He will give you a study guide...answer the questions and study it and you will be fine. Its a good class with a good teacher.
Good class.
best history teacher at The State. Gives you the blamming test! Take him at all costs if you want an A
I found him easy.He hands you the material I made an A+.That said, he spends too much time bashing the students who don't do well in his class. He points out their follies such as grammar. He thinks too highly of himself.Never tells anyone they do a good job.Just complains about everyone including other teachers(Lenig) Says he doesn't care anymore.
He is one of the most negative people I have ever met and shows no faith in any of his students. I made an A in his class but only because I read the text. I taught myself what I needed to know. His class is a waste of time. I love history and looked forward to taking it. He made it a miserable experience for me because of his constant complaining.
He was very negative,he always yelled at our class and didn't seem like he really cared how any of us did. He did give study guides.I worked really hard for my B in his class, I read all of the chapters and looked up all answers to study guide. I didn't get much out of his lectures. I'd recommend taking Andrews.
Gidcomb is a very nice professor who cares about his students, and though he can at time be a little bit peeved at them, it's only because he really cares what they make, and college is not just about getting handed everything, but he does give you the tests to study before they are given but you have to work at earning your grade I respect that
The worst professor I've had at C-State. He spent about an hour goinf off about something that had nothing to do with what we were learning. And I didnt think it was fair that his other history classes could choose to write a paper on their family for their project when TN history has to either take time off work to go somewhere or pay for 3 tours
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Gidcomb! He practically hand feeds you what you need to succeed in his class. If you pay attention to the lectures and actually study you'll do great. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities, but many sadly don't take advantage. He's not going to hand you an A, but he is going to give all the tools necessary to get one.
Dr. Gidcomb is awesome. His lectures are very interesting (then again, I find History very interesting). He's a really smart guy and if you have a question, he'll take the time to answer it thoroughly. He gives you the actual tests beforehand to study. All you have to do is find the answers in the book. Easy and interesting class. Take his classes!
Mr. Gidcomb is VERY liberal and attacks conservatism every chance he gets with no regard to his students who may be conservative. However, if a student openly displays an opposition to his opinion he will roll his eyes at you in front of everyone. He gets off topic ALL the time. Don't take his class if you really care about learning history!
Dear Mr. Gidcomb, Please keep your opinions to yourself.
Although I find the majority of history very boring I will admit that Dr. Gidcomb made History not only interesting but also fun. He gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit and even sends you his power point presentations. All you have to do is study and you're sure to pass his class.
Mr. Gidcomb is dorky and a little quirky but as a teacher hes really good. he may go off on rants about somthing that is not too importatant, but he gives outlines of what is important...if you listen and do the work you should have no problems in his class.
Dr. Gidcomb is awesome! The only way you can fail his class is (1)Not pay attention to his lecture, (2) Not read the material or(3)You are incapable of learning and need to drop college all together.
He is a great professor and a wonderful human being. In his class read, listen, and take notes (basically college 101) and you will pass his course with no trouble. He has a dry wit and can be extremely passionate about some of his class topics but that’s what makes him a wonderful educator.
Gotta pay attention
funny
Easy but fun class. Gidcomb is a smart guy and his lectures are very interesting if you are a history lover. He brings in pop culture and other interesting facts about the periods of history we study so you will learn a lot of interesting stuff. COMPLETE THE STUDY GUIDES! Easy A. Very liberal guy, which didnt bother me, but prepare yourself.
Community service is required it sucks!! Very Liberal guy it drove me crazy!! he didn't care about anybody else views talks the whole class period
Dr. Gidcomb is a great professor. He does make you do work to achieve a good grade in the class. But he provides you with all the necessary materials and pretty much tells you exactly what will be on the test. He also has a wonderful personality. However, he does take authority if needed. - Very funny guy.
Dr.Gidcomb is a awesome professor. He provides power points prior to each section that covers the material. There is out of class reading, study questions and a project. If you put in the effort, there's no reason to not achieve an A. Very knowledgeable of History. Keep it up Dr. Gidcomb....
Dr. Gidcomb is a awesome instructor. He is very clear from day one on what is required in his class. He provides power points of his lectures which covers the material. He offers ways to obtain extra credit. There are out of class reading, study questions and a project to complete. Very knowledgeable of History and he does make it fun. Thumbs up !!
Very confusing, always going off topic. Tests are hard. Only way to pass is to make sure you read and understand the chapters and answer the lecture questions. Not very helpful outside of class.
Doctor Gidcomb's class was very interesting and he tried to make learning history fun.
Don't be lazy. Do the assigned reading(very little), complete your project, answer the study guide questions and the multiple choice/short essay tests are a breeze! Dr. Gidcomb gives you all the information to get an A. Great teacher. Pay attention and you will do fine.
He is a tough grader. makes very hard tests and he never gives anything about tests. He wants you to do project and you have to go and visit historic places.
Basically gives you the test. if you don't study or read the book you will not pass though. A Lot of Extra Credit!!
Awesome Lectures
Gidcomb makes you laugh during his lectures, he's very witty. Expect a 75 points project that you have to do outside of class by yourself or with your friend(s). He also gives you a lot of opportunities for extra credit! I don't know how helpful he is since I never had to ask, but he's a very good professor.
Very Liberal
If I were you, I'd take him!
Dr. Gidcomb is an amazing teacher! He is clearly passionate about what he is teaching. For the big project you can either write a paper or do 15 hrs of community service. I'd say do the 15 hrs, much easier. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities! Just do the study guides and pay attention in class and the tests shouldn't be too hard!
Pro's Notes available on online campus His jokes are funny sometimes Con's Comments his politics opinion frequently Can be very awkward
You MUST show up to class to get the lectures. His tests are the study guide made over. If you show up to class and do you study guide, you should pass with no lower grade than a B. He makes classes fun and entertaining. I love him
He really is a great teacher. However I never had to read the text book or do the study guides, just listen and pay attention during class and you will be fine. Obviously loves his job and is passionate about history which makes him a great teacher. As for the projects, stop complaining, he gives you months to do it.
Dr. Gidcomb is a neat guy. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is very passionate about teaching. But.. Dr. Gidcomb did let his political views get in the way of his teaching. It may be because of the election this year, but he still let his political views stand in the way of lectures. Overall, the class is pretty cool and I learned a lot!
This guy is amazing, learned so much from this class.
He provides study guides and as long as you know the questions on there, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A on every test. Attendance matters and counts for a grade, so don't skip. He loves lecturing and talking but I found his lectures to be interesting and entertaining. He is easy to get along with. Just show up and be ready to take notes!
He skips around in lectures will confuse you
Very judgemental, if youre not a good test taker, youll hear about it, he doesnt care.
He is a great teacher and I would recommend him to anyone that needs to take a history course. He gives a study guide on online campus and the questions go right along with the lectures on a powerpoint. There are questions out of the text book that will be on the test.
I took him for history 1 and history 2 Id recommend him hes very easy as long as you fill out the study guide and study it youll get an easy A he also provides many extra credit opportunities.
Had him for U.S history 1 and 2, easiest class as long as you fill out study guide and do extra credit. The community service project is also very easy, nearly impossible to fail his class.
Mr. Gidcomb is a genuine teacher and knows his history. Its not the hardest class by no means but the lecture is heavy and there is a lot of reading. He does require attendance.
Dr. Gidcomb is a wonderful professor. His lectures are easy to get into and he makes learning Tennessee history FUN! I feel that he really cares for his students and their success beyond the classroom. He gives you all the resources to pass his class. He also offers ample amounts of extra credit throughout the semester. 10/10 would recommend him.
Prof Gidcomb made this course easy to learn. All of his PowerPoints and notes are available to the students. He also makes study guides for all of his exams which is extremely helpful if following along in lectures is difficult for you. He talks the entire class. If he didn't, then you wouldn't pass. Come to class, pay attention, and study!
Solid Choice. Clear expectations and grading laid out in the syllabus. He isn't the most engaging but is definitely the best History teacher out of all the professors at Columbia State. Put in the work, and you'll be fine. The grades are based heavily on four non-comprehensive test. Fill out the study guide as you go and you'll be fine!
Do NOT take his class. Extremely disrespectful, and will announce your personal information/ questions to the class. Does not provide a grading rubric for the 4 papers assgined. He will fail the paper with no explanation. His test is very hard, if you fail one you fail the class. All of the tests are tricky questions that can go both ways.
TOUGH GRADER!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS TN HISTORY CLASS! I have never had an issue with at professors, but his class was a nightmare. You do not learn anything other than his personal opinions and list of the questions on his exams are about his opinions or random quotes he said ONCE in class. He is very disrespectful and rude to you. There was no homework onlythree exam
I never learned anything in High School History. I took Barry Gidcomb's class and he made me want to learn! It was so interesting and he is a great person. Explains things well, has a good sense of humor and is always accessible if you have a question. I took History 1 and 2 and they were the best classes I ever took!
I have taken 2 history classes from Prof. Gidcomb (1 pre-covid, 1 during covid) & they were both easy As. You don't need to take notes. Just fill in the study guide while he lectures and complete all assignments to the best of your knowledge. This class was a pleasure in comparison to the workload of others. 10/10 definitely recommend.
Professor Gidcomb tends to ramble, especially if you get him off topic. Overall he's a good teacher. If you don't do your work, you defiantly won't pass, he gives you plenty of opportunities to get extra credit though (take them).
This class was probably one of the roughest that I have taken, but that was because I couldn't figure out how to pass the exams. If you want to pass the class with a B or higher, you need to fill in the study guide and do the extra credit. If it wasn't for the extra credit I probably would've gotten a C. I think he was overall a good Professor.
Dr. Gidcomb will definitely go down as a history teacher legend in my mind. In every lecture, there was always at least one story that I was interested in. However, I only took his Tennessee History class.
This guy is a joke! Announces first day of class my students arent doing well in my test , please make Tenneasee Hx good again. Its been 2 years with bad results maybe its COVVID. Maybe its HIM. His lectures are confusing, he doesnt follow any format, he speaks convoluted and honestly the worst instructor ever ! He needs to retire. AWFUL
Inconsistent in lectures, study guide and textbook. The textbook is awful because it skips around constantly and Thw instructor doesnt follow it. He knows Tennessee History well and should be a Historian instead of instructor at a community college. He teaches this class like. Masters level (which I have). Awful awful experience and disappoin
I am shocked to see the reviews from my peers. I got an A in Barry's class. He lays everything out in the study guide, you need only read and listen to ecture and write down answers to pass. He was knowledgeable and kind, really cares about your success.I learned a ton from his class and found it easy to pass. If you're lazy I wouldn't bother.
LOVE BARRY He's passionate about history and happy to discuss related topics during and after class. His lectures are like stories and his dad's jokes are great. Take notes, listen and follow his clear and simple instructions, and you'll get good grades. He gives questions thatl be on exams, so fill them out. If you don't like history take Barry!
So here's the thing, Professor Gidcomb loves his job and loves anything about history. However, I took his TN History 3 hour lecture and it was brutal. He lectures the entire 3 hours. He does offer a ton of extra credit programs though. So overall, I do recommend him, but I probably won't take him again. Tests aren't that hard either.
He is very passionate and a great historian! Although his classes are very long and there is definitely not enough time on tests, this would be a fine class if there was more time. If your willing to put in the work this is a great class for you. If you aren't, don't bother taking it, it takes effort. Text Books are required, so is attendance.
Pretty good teacher,he could have been more interactive. He gives great feedback on written assignments i will say, and makes his expectations clear.
Dr. Barry Gidcomb is a kind, knowledgeable, and dedicated professor. Granted: this class is content heavy, BUT this does not mean it is difficult; deep breath. Print out the study guides he provides. All answers to the study guide are stated in class or reading. He specifies where each answer can be found too. Tests are verbatim. HE CARES! :)
He was very rude to me and I would recommend him not even to my worst enemy. Very unprofessional
