Great Guy, Love his cowboy boots!
Good teacher but can't be found on Tuesdays if you need help
Prof. Herron was a lot of fun. He really relays back to everyday life to make things easier to understand, and he has lots of fun stories. The man is ready for the end of the semester, though. He starts a countdown with the rest of us!
You will do okay in Herron's class if you had chemistry before. He teaches too fast, also he is a hard grader.Take Vicki Davis excellent teacher!
Dr. Herron is a great teacher, if I needed to take any Chem classes again, I would recommend him.
Good teacher, overall. He doesn't have alot give a lot of leeway (extra credit, make-up, bombing a test). You will learn something, though!
Don't expect to pass the class if you don't study at least 30 mins a day. Great teacher, but hard class. Don't take this class if you aren't going into nursing,or hygeine.
Very hard class, but great teacher.Teaches very fast. Don't take if you don't need it, but if you do take it will professor Barry. Study a lot
Barry is a great teacher. He made things as simple as possible. If you take his class look at his shoes to figure how the class will be. Cowboy boots=serious, loafers=semi-serious, and black tennis shoes=laid back, not as focused as normal. When the cowboy boots are on be ready to work. Excellen
herron's a great teacher, he teaches in a manner that everyone can learn and do well as long as they're willing to put forth the effort, great guy, can tell he cares about his students
Herron was a horrible teacher. He had a very dry sense of humor. Never explained anything in full detail. Randomly calls on people and puts them on the spot in class to answer questions. Tests are very hard. Never reviewed before tests. WORSE TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!
This class was pretty hard but well worth it! Barry is a great teacher - I really liked the way he presented the info in class. We moved pretty fast, and it was neccesary to study a lot to keep up but if you do, you will learn a lot!
Herron was terrible!! I heard great things about this teacher, none of which were true! He teaches way to fast. His tests have nothing to do with his reviews. Unless you have had a chem class before, do not take chem with Herron.
Herron expects a lot out of his students. It is critical to take good notes in order to be able to study for tests. He grades hard and puts all students on the spot by asking random questions, so make sure to pay full attention in class.
I definitely liked the class and the material was set out pretty clearly. It was a difficult subject to begin with, so having Dr. Herron for a prof made it a great experience.
His class was extremely hard. He expects you to know things for the test that are not taught in class. Puts you on the spot in class. I would not take him whether it is your first chemistry class or not.
He is a wonderful teacher. Always willing to explain things that need extra clafication. Class requires you to study outside of class- no slackers allowed in any chem class- be prepared sometimes have pop quizes- practice a few problems everynight and you'll be fine.
This class is hard, get over it its chemistry for crying out loud! Dr. Herron (he is a Doc) is very laid back and knows his stuff, he's been teaching this class for 10+ yrs I believe. He loves to just BS with his students and I think is very fair. Work your problems, study for quizzes, and don't expect extra credit. Sup Dr. Herron? Mitch
Wonderful teacher! Great notes, explains everything with great detail. Also very willing to help outside of class if needed. very sarcastic but very fun teacher. ask questions and you will be answered :)
Chem itself is just hard, I was so scared going into the class; however, having a good teacher makes the class go so much easier. Herron is a real good teacher. He explains everything real well, and if anyone has a question he doesn't have any problem helping. Yes, he does put people on the spot, but that gets you to think. You can't just go into t
I don't know why people thought he was so great. He was extremely difficult. Didn't explain material very well. Unwilling to help outside of class. Doesn't seem interested in helping students understand chem.
I took his class in the summer and he tried to make it a very laid back and fun class. He went over things very well and really made sure you knew the material. If it wasn't for his teaching I don't think I would have made it though chem 124 with the horrible teacher I had. It is hard, but if you stick with it you will learn a lot.
Coming from someone who has taken this class twice, Herron is an AWESOME professor! He gives handouts and goes through the notes thoroughly. You definitely need to come to class to do well. His teaching is easy to understand. WAY better than my first chemistry professor at JCCC. I would recommend him!!!
Dr. Herron was incredible. I took his class at 7am ONLY because I heard great things about him. It was so worth it. I was more than pleased with my grade, and I know that I truly learned the material. He doesn't believe in extra credit, and gives pop quizzes, but only if you have had plenty of time to study. You have to work for your grade!
Dr. Herron is the most clear professor I have ever had. He tells us the relative importance of everything we cover. The lectures, notes, tests, and labs are seamless. Come prepared, and he'll answer any questions. The class is challenging, so keep up.
Dr. Herron was an excellent teacher. I also took his 7 a.m. class last semester. Very helpful, explained material very clear and informative. You will definitely learn a lot in this class and create a solid foundation in chemistry. However, be ready when you come to class.. He will drop quizzes on you (but he gives a little bit of heads up a da
He thinks that he is teaching at KU not JCCC. his exames are hards i got a B but i was studying 2 huors a day. i tood chem 122 with him
He teaches very well. He has hard tests but if you listen during lecture/lab and study often you'll do just fine.
Allows cheating in class, doesnt explain NOTHING he is a pathetic excuse as a teacher.
Great Teacher. VERY organized. Knows what he is doing and exactly how to teach the class. Gives test reviews that are just like test. Always open to questions. Does a great job of making sure all students understand the labs before we walk out the door. I had very little previous chem, Didn't study much except for before the test, and got an A.
Prof. Herron was the greatest teacher I've ever had. His lectures were incredibly easy to understand, and chemistry has always been hard for me. He gives you a packet for every section and his lectures follow the packet. He will answer any questions you have and really wants you to learn. He also makes sure you only learn what you have to.
Dr.Herron is a very funny guy. He is sarcastic, so don't take it personally if you feel offended. His class is interesting, however, you need to seriously devote at least 2 hours a day to studying and going over his notes if you want to get an A and maybe even a B. I study and re-write all the notes and I have a B. Extremely HARD exams.
Very good teacher! Have him for lab only but I wish I had him for lecture too. He is straight to the point and makes things easy to understand
High and clear expectations. Does not curve grades. Teaches to many styles of learning. Professional
He is a horrible teacher. He doesn't explain much and when he asks questions he makes you feel dumb when you dont know the answers. His tests are super hard and he only focuses his attention on the students he likes. He told our class not many of us would succeed in our majors. I would definately not recommend hime at all!
If you take the class and think you can just breeze through, think again. You are choosing chemistry for a reason, and this man is more than qualified to teach you. It's up to you! Ask the questions, and get the answers. If you wanna smart off, not for you!, but if you want the A, he'll let you get it. Listen carefully, he knows his job and he care
He's an excellent teacher and will give the best assistance he can with the cirriculum. Very straight forward and a ton of fun. Lab is also great with him too. <3
Dr. Herron is a great teacher. He genuinely cares about his students and will take extra time to review and clarify any questions. He has a good sense of humor. He knows how to maintain a good teacher/student relationship. He grades hard, but is reasonable on most things.
Herron crams it down your throat without any real life explanation to make it remotely interesting. Felt so drained and confused after each torture session (class). For a person who hasn't ever had Chem I don't recommend his class.
I would most certainly recommend this professor. He answered all of my stupid questions I had and did not make me feel dumb for asking them. His test aren't to hard but I would not call them easy. He is super nice and takes chemistry and applies it to real life situations. my class was mostly nursing and he always gave examples in the health prof!
He is a GREAT prof. he really cares about his students and will help you get the grade that you WANT! It is not an easy A but if you work at it and do the problems he sugguest and put time into it you will get a good grade
Dr. Herron a good prof. his teaching style is clear & concie, which makes it seem fast. He may come off a bit strong, but is a character with a dry sense of humor;) Be prepared for 10 pop up quizzes & to answer ques. in class. There are 6 tests, commltv final & 2 small papers. Tests can be a challenge. Come to class, take notes, & do the pink book!
Takes time to help you understand the material.
Dr. Herron is a great teacher. Chemistry was not an easy class, you definetely have to work at it but if you go to class and actually study you can achieve the grade you want. He really cares about the students and whether or not they are understanding the material. He also gives many resources to help you succeed. (Pink book, practice tests)
This was my 1st chem class,I'm a senior in high school,I hate science. I didn't study at all&got a B. He tells tons of stories to relate science to real life,& teaches only stuff you will need for the test.He helps with questions, but makes you search your own knowledge for the answer by asking a lot of other questions.
Extremely organized in print materials and lectures. Has lots of experience so he knows how to get ideas across to students in the best way. If people are having a particular problem in something, he will go over those types of problems in class.
Good teacher but be willing and able to spend 15-20 hrs a week studying chemistry. It is not an easy A. I got a B+ and worked for it. His grading was not consistent, his lecture was cookie cutter he had a hard time explaining in different ways.pre tests were nothing like the exams.Has VERY high expectations.not impossible just tons of hard work.
I like this class alot. The professor is great, helpful and doesn't throw you any surprises.
Very helpful professor! I love question time at the begining of each class, he lets everyone ask questions and he answers them all! As long as you show up to class and study you shouldnt have a hard time passing!
AWESOME!!!!!!! teacher....i never have understood chem., but he keeps it fun and makes it interesting. i like that its not so serious all the time. hard class no matter who u take, but he has lecture notes that help it smoother..wish all proffessors were like Herron.
Herron is a very personable teacher, however that doesn't mean he is easy! He does Q/A at the beginning of each class, and there are multiple pop quizes. If you want a good grade you are going to have to work for it.
Great teacher and great teaching techniqu but you have to work hard if you wanna get "A" bocz you are the 1 taking exam, not him. Chemistry is not an easy subject but if you work hark and smart you will do good. All the best.
I hated everything about chemistry until I took this class, Dr. Harron explained everything very well and if someone didn't understand he would find different ways of explaining it. This was the best class I have ever taken, it was very work intensive, but Dr. Bear kept it fun! I ended up with a B+ but had to work for it. I highly recommend it
He is very consistent in asking students if they have questions. He will explain things in multiple ways so you understand. He is very patient and highly intelligent. I completely recommend him and wish he taught other classes!
He makes learning Chemistry a little bit easier. I believe his tactic is to somewhat scare you and then when the test come you're like, "Wow I think I did alright." He has a great way of explaining things. His notes are very useful and he stays on track. Would definitely recommend him!
What a surprise. Chemistry was not supposed to be this interesting. Barry teaches in order to affect students. He gives great examples, always asks for questions and has so much patience. I would totally recommend him, absolutely!!!
I had him for a sb one night in Chemistry 122. He explained things in 50 minutes, that I've worked months on trying to understand!!! I wish I could transfer into his class! This teacher is absolutely amazing!!
Barry does such a great job of explaining everything and making sure all of your questions are answered. He explains things in many different ways and does a great job breaking down even the hardest concepts. This class does require quite a bit of studying and actually doing the work but I highly recommend him as a teacher!
WOW. I was TERRIFIED of taking Chemistry and have avoided it for so long but Barry made it fun, and gave awesome examples making it easy to understand. He is very patient and definitely wants to help his students learn. It's not an easy class though- must attend class and do homework!
Barry's the best. At the start of each class, he asks everyone individually if they have a question for him to answer. He's way patient and breaks down CHEM (which is scary) into baby steps. He's funny and personable, and he's on your side. I've spoken with people taking CHEM 122 with other profs and I'm convinced that I lucked out!
This guy is cocky. Don't be fooled by the positive comments, he's probably making them himself...If you can handle an arrogant and condescending attitude, go for it. Be prepared to be picked on, too. I'm sure he has his good moments, but again, don't let your guard down. I would never take him again or recommend him to anyone I like.
Barry was an awesome professor. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He takes his time to explain it to you. He'll even write/draw it out if you are visual person. I hardly ever used my chem book. He gives you class notes that are extremely helpful on the tests and final.
Mr. Herron is a great teacher. Anyone who says otherwise was probably just lazy, and did not show up to class. I took general chem and received an A-. The class is not easy, but Mr. Herron does his best to keep it interesting
Barry is an amazing teacher. Don't be mistaken this is a hard class, but he provides you with everything you need to succeed! The grade you get all depends on how much effort you put in. I think there were 4 or 5 exams, the final, some quizzes, and 2 projects all out of 1000 points. Exams are most important. Please take him, you will learn a lot.
Barry is the BOMB!!! He really knows Chemistry and how to get down on your level even if your level is the bottom! He makes it super fun and answers all your questions without making you feel stupid!! I've read the other comments and the ones that down-grade him are wrong!!! Believe the high ratings!! He's wonderful!!! Take him if you can!!!
Mr. Herron is, far and away, the finest instructor I've ever had. I was terrified of Chemistry, and hadn't taken a math course in 30 years. He absolutely saved me. Never talks down to you, always makes certain each person understands before moving on, happy to answer any question. And NO, not cocky. AWESOME. Thank you, Barry, for all you do!
Whole reason I'm going into chemical engineering is this great teacher!
Prof Herron works hard and takes his job seriously. He wants his students to succeed, and if you have any questions via in person or e-mail, he takes the time to help you. He is very knowledgeable and patient with my novice questions. I would like for him to post all of the notes online in the future.
Dr. Herron is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He begins every class by individually asking every student in the room if they have any questions. He never makes you feel stupid for not knowing an answer. He will spend as much time as you need to understand something. He is more than willing to give extra help during office hours.
Chemistry was always a class I dreaded, Barry was the real MVP. He made the class interesting, and his tests matched his lecture material. If you put the time in, it will pay off. He is a great teacher and enjoys teaching. By far the best teacher i have ever had and a class i once hated has become my favorite. HES A MUST TAKE.
Amazing teacher. Teaches at a level that is easy to learn. Taken chemistry before and got a c. Took it again with him and got an a. Asks if you have questions about previous lecture before class and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking. I'd take another class with him any day.
Great professor and does a great job teaching a difficult subject
Take Barry for Chem!! He is so fun and knows a lot about the topics he teaches. He cares about each student and wants them to succeed. He teaches through a packet and let's everyone ask questions before the start of every class. Also we always got a 10 minute break every class so that was nice! Class is geared towards health related professions!
This class is hard, period. Barry has been teaching this class at JCCC for several years, so he is extremely familiar with the material, labs, D2L, syllabus. He knows where students usually struggle and has additional demos, and tips, to help. Tests are TOUGH. Skip class and you will likely fall behind. Would definitely take him again!

Pay attention to the things he puts in mastery quiz's and emphasizes as important during lecture because success in the class is dependent on them.
I had him for princip of chem and chem2. He was fantastic for princip, but for chem 2 was his first time teaching that class which made it a bit worse. He's very enthusiastic, and has cool anecdotes about the subject. If you're taking princip, I'd 100% suggest. As far as chem 2, I'm sure he's gotten it better as that was a semester or two ago.
I don't know about Chem 1, or Principles of Chem, but do NOT take him for CHEM 2. He was extremely confusing, and was not a fair grader. He would give exams that would have 5 q's or so, and each one would be at least 20 points. Each question was sequential so if you didn't know the first step, you're screwed. Outside of class, he's pretty cool.
Barry is the best teacher I have ever had. I am back in school after getting my Bachelors at KState. He CARES, is helpful, has office hours, special ways of helping us remember things, practice sheets he creates himself. I have NEVER had such a wonderful teacher. The class material is hard -- GO TO CLASS and STUDY and you'll do great.
This dude made this tough course one of my favorites. He's funny, and will help you out if he can tell how hard you're trying.
Berry Herron is the coolest college professor I have had yet. Not only is he one of the most laid back, hilarious guys - he is a fantastic teacher. His lectures are interesting and everything he teaches is straight forward. I love chemistry, but love it even more because of him.
By far one of my favorite professors in college so far. He made class enjoyable and made the material easy to understand. He gave us chances to ask questions and made sure everyone understood everything we were learning. He made chemistry fun & super easy to understand!!
Barry was the best professor I had at JCCC. He is amazing at teaching what you need to know for chemistry. He starts every class by asking every person individually if they have a question about the content. He is there to help and truly cares. Easy class if you show up and do the work. Don't be intimated by chemistry if you take it with Barry!
The absolute best professor!!! If you are taking chemistry make sure you take Barry!!!! He will take the time out of his own day just to make sure you know what youre doing in class. Not only did he help with understanding chemistry but he was a great adviser on what classes to take my next semester and insight on other teachers. Very caring guy!
He is the best teacher I have ever had! Hes very caring, and willing to help you learn. I have stayed after class so many times because I didnt understand something and he will stay as long as you need. Words dont do him justice!!! Barry is the best professor you can have!!!
Barry is willing to put in the work to help you out, but you have to be willing to put in the work too. This class is a hard class if you do not attend and/or pay attention. If you go to class an try hard, you will do fine.
Barry Herron was the reason I stayed alive throughout my second semester of college. He's genuinely a great teacher and has a love for Chem. If you don't understand something, he will surely help you understand. If you need this class (or just want to take it for fun) I highly recommend Dr. Herron.
Barry is one of the best professors I've had. He's hilarious, caring, and an amazing teacher. It's a lot of hard work but he makes you want to succeed. He's more than willing to help and you can tell he genuinely cares for his students.
He was very professional yet super relatable. He didn't really give out extra credit yet somehow he was able to get us all to study. Very good at explaining concepts and helping us understand chemistry. Highly recommend him!
This class scared me to death at the beginning. As time went by Barry noticed I was making D's on test and asked me what was wrong? Instead of taking chem 120 I ended up in 122 (accident) and he told me I should drop bc I need the basics of chem 1st. I stayed and ended the semester with 69%. He doesn't round but it was all worth it.
I really enjoyed him as a professor and person, chemistry is one of the harder subjects for me but he did a great job explaining concepts. He gives quizzes every week but drops a few of the lowest ones and they keep you on track. He tries to make chemistry bearable which I greatly appreciated. Hard class but great professor.
Barry is such an amazing teacher, he really tries to connect with students. Homework isn't due, but I wish I could go back and do it to help study for exams (*HINT HINT*). He makes sure that all questions are answered, and no question is a bad question. He tries to make things easy for you to understand. I really am sad this class is over.
Mr. Barry is hands down the best professor I have ever had. He checks in with each student at the beginning of class and asks if we have questions ( use this to your advantage). Study your notes and do the problems in the pink and text book! Flashcards will be your friend. Chemistry is tough but he makes it fun. Cant give this guy enough praise!
He's good professor but he's exams are hard and non of the problem solving from packet book. The packet problem/study guide is very easy. Watch! exams are hard!!
Dr. Herron is the best teacher/professor I have ever had in my life. I had taken chemistry once before, but struggled and eventually dropped the class. Barry for me was the key to excelling in chemistry. He is extremely coherent, cares about his students and is extremely thorough in his lectures to make sure everyone understands. Best teacher ever!
I really felt like the professor cared that we understood the material. He was very clear about due dates and gave us plenty of study materials. I failed chemistry in high school, and honestly though I had no ability in math or science, so I was expecting to hopefully get a C if I worked really hard, but he made the class so clear and interesting!
He was the best professor ever! I was super nervous for taking chemistry, but Barry made it super easy. I defineitly recommend him.
Chemistry is definitely one of the hardest classes i've ever taken. If you want to pass the class spend at least three hours of study time in the SCR room doing problems from the pink book you are given for the course and book problem's. Barry has a unique way of lecturing - he really breaks down information to where it makes sense.
Im took chemistry online with him. It was a little challenging but he is a great teacher. I recommend him for sure.
Barry is a great professor, although I wouldnt say chemistry was my strong point he try to teach me the best to his ability and was very supportive. He truly want u to succeed. Weekly quizzes worth a few points , 6 test, open notes but you wont pass if u dont try and study. He a great guy big heart and mind.
To pass this class with an A, all you need to do is study, practice, and repeat. The material was taught thoroughly and was made easy to understand. The exams were frequent and proctored, but easier than the practice material.
Professor Herron was frequently available for one on one learning when needed. His posted lectures were thorough and easy to understand. Quizzes were not worth a lot of points but designed to help you grasp the concepts of each unit easily.
Very enjoyable class Kind and respectful. Quick email responses and assignment grades. Explained concepts well and assignments were useful. Manageable workload; the one time I missed an assignment, he let me turn it in the next day. Kept up with students about their grades and always answered questions. Overall, great class - definitely recommend.
I took this as a hybrid class, so we got the lectures online and had one discussion and one lab class a week. I found Professor Herron to be very clear and made the material easy to learn. If you take the time to study at all outside of class, it should be manageable. I will say, a large portion of my class dropped over the semester.
I am not a Chemistry guy, so I was unsure about taking this class. Professor Herron is a kind down to earth person. Before each class session he always asks each person if they have questions (he's very personal like that). If you're not good at Chemistry study, read, and try not to be impulsive.
Professor Herron is a great professor who cares about the students' understanding of the materials. However, the class is extremely difficult and the tests determine your grade, they are also every 2 weeks so you don't really ever catch a break.
amazing professor.
Professor Herron is a wonderful human and professor. He always asks everyone first thing if anyone has questions on anything. I recommend doing the canvas quizzes for each chapter, it is really helpful and that will help your grade. I would highly recommend attending all classes. Overall, he is really great.
Amazing Professor Overall! Very good lectures and cares about you passing. Attendance is important due to the fact that some lectures can be long. Lectures are good and questions are encouraged. Would definitely recommend.
Good guy A lot of studying so get a partner or study group asap Test every 2 weeks. Sounds crazy but I think it was best doing a test right after a unit is better then taking a test based off of 2 units. Take advantage of cheat sheet. Strict overall especially in lab. I was taking this class with anatomy + two other classes. I regret it. Make time
I have always struggled with science, but he made it really easy to understand! he gives every student the opportunity to ask questions. Make sure to do the hw, and never hesitate to ask a question.
Very good professor I would recommend. He goes over lots of example in class and makes sure everyone's question's are answered, and everyone understands before moving on. This makes the test's easy. He is very understanding and works with every student to ensure they are not lost. If you need to take intro to chemistry I recommend him.
All reviews seem positive but he is a super tough professor. Coming from someone who does great in school, he made this class hard for me. When I tried to go to his office hours for help, he made it seem like it was a bother for him. I ended up dropping the course if that says anything. There was about 8 people who dropped the class before me.
I really liked him as a person. He's very funny and makes chemistry a little less mind melting. However its still chemistry and the work load was a lot sometimes. Also if you care about the planet you'll get offended because the amount of trees this guy kills is insane. He also does a lot of in class demos which really helped me learn.
Every class, he would have every student work through the notes. Even for new material. One by one, solving a problem in front of the class. I don't recommend his class if you have anxiety. We also went through many papers, but we had no online resources. I know a bunch of other students dropped even halfway through because it was too much stress.
