Awesome Grad Macro Prof. Just don't fall behind in the workload, otherwise you're done.
My bottom hurts
Very clear and skilled teacher. Very fare tests. One of the better professors I've had.
tak a lot of notes, he shows you one way of doing something in class in terms of models, the rest is up to you to fool around with the models with essays and explanations on tests, take down all those side stories he's always getting into study a lot
The best prof I've had at explaining econ. He can relate econ. concepts to real life situations in a way that allows for a much better understanding. He didn't, however, give an exam untill Nov (well past the W deadline). You will learn econ though, which is hard to do at this school.
really good professor...always there to help...explains things very well and if you have any questions he explains them thoroughly...he actually makes macroeconomics interesting because he loves it
Great Professor. Tough exams, but he really knows his stuff and he makes lectures interesting.
I advise you to take notes- gets his 'essay' questions from 'random' stories about the economy, tough midterm- Notes are everything, but the book helps a bunch too- basically, one of the classes you don't mind working hard for cuz he's one of the few non horrible econ profs out there- very fair
Bar none, one of the best econ. professors at Binghamton. The exams were reasonable. Highly recommended professor!
i wasnt thrilled with this professor, the lectures were really boring and somewhat difficult to follow/understand, he knew what he was talking about but he didnt do a good job explaining himself to the class, the final is insane so study hard if u plan on taking this class
great professor, notes are everything.
difficult tests. lectures are boring/vague. beware.
Class is boring, tests are extremely difficult. I'd rather write at 20 page paper due the next day than take this class
Garbage...pure garbage. Take it with someone else.
Not a good teacher.Tests are not on learned materials but rather ideas discussed and which must be expanded on during the test, so what you see on the test is something you see for the first time. For the test, nobody really knows anything and it's graded on a curve. So, if your smart and able to reason through problems better than most, your ok.

Great professor! A great lecturer that really knows what he's talking about. The exams REALLY test your understanding of the material, so study hard.
Tests are ridiculously hard but he curves like crazy.
MY FAVORITE PROF in bing hes hard but if you truly love economics you will appreciate his ideas and theories. His test are hard but his curve is ridiculous. Just pay attention and read the book you will gain so much knowledge when you leave the class.
great professor, best I've had in the econ department. Gives tests that are hard enough so that they actually challenge people. highly recommended.
Tests are impossible and not strongly correlated to what is taught in his class. He has a snobby elitist attitude about him. Is only willing to help you so much with questions you may have. Other Macro Theory professors are easier and better.
Brilliant professor, but I wouldn't take him if you're looking for an easy A. He usually curves to a C+/B-.You'll definitely learn something in this class though. Class average on my first midterm was a 67/120 and that curved to a B-.
Has an arrogant attitude, but rightfully so. Probably the most brilliant professor I've run into thus far. Unbelieveable understanding of macrotheory, and he is remarkably clear. Never heard him say "um". You will learn a lot. Asks test questions that challenge students to apply the material rather than regurgitate facts. Difficult, but great curve
Just an amazing teacher...wish he taught every Economics class. Its too bad he's leaving the country for a year. And a note to everyone who may get him in the future, "Read the book or you will fail" ~Barry Jones
Great prof, very clear, but tests are extremely difficult.
This guy really knows his stuff. Everything makes sense in class because he explains it so well. It's a little harder when you're studying. Tests are challenging but he curves well and expect questions that were never taught in class. Very nice guy.
barry is the most intelligent guy i've seen. he doesn't want u just to memorize the theories but rather want you be able to relate macro theories to realistic issues. his class is challenging, and f u wanna get an A, you have to read the book and take good notes. if u are econ major and want to learn real econ materials, take him
Best econ professor out there. He teaches the stuff well and is willing to help out. He is able to communicate his knowledge in a coherent manner and I learned a lot from him. Tests were somewhat challenging but they were open book,we got a cheat sheet and there was a big curve. If you want to major in economics take an econ class with him.
Barry was my favorite professor, by far. I learned more from him then in all my other econ classes combined. Some say his tests are hard, but he curves them, so who cares? His classes were always interesting and thought provoking. I recommend taking whatever he's teching.
Great professor. This is a hard class, but if you are planning on majoring Economics, you should be ready to understand the material. This is NOT a ' BS memorization --> easy A' class. This is a great introduction to real Macroeconomics. Barry is very engaging and clear. Attendance is not mandatory but you can't to miss class. Tests understanding.
I don't thing he's a good teacher. It's hard to understand. He knows a lot, but I don't think he's easy to understand and interesting teacher. I was surprised b/c he's rating was really good here.
Great professor - very open and willing to answer questions. Attendance not mandatory but miss a class and you'll lose out on a lot of information. Exams are crazy hard, but even if you get lower than 50% on them you will still get a B+. Read the textbook every other day and take good notes and you should do no worse than a B in the class.
Jones does a fine job teaching a challenging course. His tests are incredibly difficult, but as I have experienced in the end you will appreciate the fact. His methods of teaching and testing will give you a true understanding of the material beyond the copy and paste. Go to lecture or fail.
Won't ever take a class with him again, but I honestly did appreciate what he taught. His class made me learn for the first time and actually apply what he taught to the real world. Even though I did terrible in the class, I do appreciate his teaching. His tests are difficult; a 50% on an exam is considered a B+. Miss a lecture and you WILL fail.
Excellent professor! Engaging, clear, and interesting. Assigns a few homeworks that are typically only evaluated for completion. Tests make up 80% of grade and are very challenging but realistic. Discussions are kind of annoying, but they help. Assigned reading will show up on tests. Read the book and attend lecture if you want to do well.
Looks like a grown up Cory Matthews. Very tough class and subject matter, but Barry is very nice and not a tough grader. Keep up with the reading!
Fantastic at making his students understand the material. Listen to how he wants you to study; it works! Highly recommend. Live by your textbook and take killer notes.
Tough tough class made very much manageable thanks to his teaching. Very knowledgeable guy who covers a lot of material in a little time. Tests are very hard, but grades are relative to the class and are curved. Make sure you go to class and DO take notes!
Don't take his class unless you already have a PhD in economics or are forced to. Impossible to understand and on top the class is very boring. He doesn't like students emailing him (weird) and instead of making the class live-able he makes it unbearable. Plus the TA's are clueless about almost everythin.
His class is very hard and his exams are impossible. However, if go to his class every week and write down notes, then you'll do ok on his exams.
Good at explaining concepts, always relate them to real world events. He's a though grader, but the class is worth it.
As far as Macroeconomic theory is concerned, the textbook and lectures were sufficient. Helpfulness? Never went to his office hours because he scared me. All I know is one thing: he does not deserve a chili pepper.
Does this professor deserve a chili pepper? No. Is his class interesting? It's macroeconomics; you decide for yourself. All I know is that he is adamant in his views and waves off all other ideas.
Barry Jones is one of the smartest, and well-spoken profs at bing. His midterm and final are ridiculously hard, but if you understand the material well enough, the curve will carry you through with at least a B as long as you go to class and understand the stuff. Highly Recommend
Hard class. Very very very hard.
The man. Hard as hell but probably the best professor you'll take for econ.
His tests are hard. He tells you that the first day of classes (a 65% was an A on the first test). Study concepts and you will do fine. The homework is nothing like his tests and are more forumla based. If you understand how to shift graphs and how different variable are interrelated you will end up at the top of the class with the curve.
His exam is tricky but once you understand his lectures and go through his notes carefully, you will do fine. Overall he is a good teacher and he does his job well.
Tough but extremely rewarding class. If you want to learn Macro and are willing to work for it, take it with Barry Jones. Make sure you read the textbook, practice models until you understand them, take advantage of study groups, office hours, and Econ Club, and make a killer cheat sheet. Great professor, gerat class.
This class will have you stressed the whole semester. Keep up with the readings, and go get yourself a free tutor at CIW.
One of the greatest and smartest professors in ECON department. This class is difficult but you can learn a lot with him. You need to spend lots of time to study this course. His test is extremely hard but it is with huge curve. Make sure you do better than other guys and you will receive good grades. Don't blame on Professor if you did't work hard
I took his international Monetary policy last semester , Fall 2013. His class was really helpful, it was not that hard if you went to the class and took the notes. Be sure to do the work that he asked to do at home by yourself, fewer questions would make you well understand his notes. The tests would be a little bit challenging but you'll be fine:)
Hard Tests, Big Curve, he is a good teacher but test grades questions whether you learn anything or not
Makes literally the hardest exams I've ever taken. Nice enough guy and you'll leave his class with a lot of new knowledge, but be prepared to put in a lot of study time for very little reward. If there was a stress/ frustration category BJones would have a 5/5 rating.
From day one I was touched by the way he was lecturing. So clear and specific. You will have to study 4-5 hours a day probably to get a decent grade. I read the book cover to cover. Exams are the hardest you can probably ever see in your life but since everyone does bad there is a huge curve. If you are willing to accept the challenge go for it
Tests are hard. Crazy hard. But his curve is even crazier. I got 110 out of 210 or something and walked away with an A. The guy is brilliant and makes you really think. It's confusing material and the tests will freak out but somehow it all works out in the end. Honestly, I took away more from this than any other Econ class. Bing's best econ prof
My favorite professor in Binghamton University. Don't be scared by his first lecture. He is very busy but if you go to his office hour, he will explain everything for you in one second. His test is the most horrible thing I ever have but he gave huge curve. He is not trying to freak you out but want you to really think and work by yourself.
He is easily the most intelligent man in the department, he went to school with Ben Bernanke and wont let you forget it. His test are the hardest things ive ever seen, he often tests you on stuff we havent learned yet but the curve is HUGE! I got a 128200 and got an A on the midterm. 50% midterm 50%final, if you want to learn take his class
Ah, a minor mix-up here! No, Prof. Jones didn't study with Bernanke. Why? Well, Bernanke was at MIT, mastering economics. Meanwhile, Jones was at WashU, ranked about 1000 spots behind - the grape juice to MIT's fine wine! Jones might dream of debating fiscal policy with Bernanke, but alas, different schools, different destinies!
If you enjoy feeling utterly bewildered and unfulfilled, then look no further, Professor Barry Jones is here to save the day! The lectures are SUPER easy to understand and the tests are so easy you at least need to study 5 hours a day to score a C+. I wish the best for you guys and Professor Barry Jones. Amen.
Lectures and homework have little to do with tests, graded on only 2 tests so if you fail the first test you fail the class. Tests are extremely hard and no review material or practice tests are given out so you go into the test blind. A huge amount of the class dropped after the first test because so many people bombed it.
10% of what is reviewed in lecture is actually tested on exams, the rest of the time spent in lecture is him rambling about whatever he feels like speaking about that day. It truly feels like this man was a force of evil sent to ruin my GPA. 2 things posted on his brightspace, including the syllabus. 0 material given to help prepare for exams. RUN
Each homework will take you about 4 hours to do, but don't worry, it's only worth 10% of your grade, the other 90% is from the 2 exams you will take. Don't expect him to post anything on brightspace, provide any course materials, or even bother to learn your name. also I hope you have $120 to spare, because you can't do hw without the textbook.
There's nothing in his brightspace page besides a syllabus, came to class with nothing but a piece of paper and yaps while mentioning nothing about the hw or what will be on his test, mid terms and finals are the hardest exams ever, with no practice questions or anything, the test doesnt cover what he teaches at all, doesn't post grades as well
Great professor. Presents all information in clear and concise ways. Is willing to take questions and help students out whenever possible, although not many questions are asked because he's so thorough in his teaching. Readings are essential for understanding of the material, even though the information in readings is often presented in class.
My favorite economics professor thus far. Very intelligent man with a kind personality who will definitely work with you when you have problems. Tests are so hard but curve is huge. Make sure to read the textbook and although attendance isn't mandatory, lectures are mostly what is tested on so go to class.
The man is a beast. Easy course, funny professor. He writes his own reviews on RMP and that's chill. He aint Bernanke unless you think Miami of Ohio is MIT. Overall, decent guy and an easy econ elective
Lectures consist of him talking to us like we already know everything about economics, no notes or slides or anything is given to us, nothing from the textbook or class is on the tests. Just took the final and you could tell everyone was struggling. Then we wonders why everyone fails his tests so badly
Boring lectures. Forces you to buy the expensive textbook to do long, boring homeworks. Posts nothing on brightspace. No practice exams; you go into his tests blind and they are super difficult. I won't be taking him again, don't repeat my mistake and take the other macro theory professor.
I can't say much that hasn't been said in the handful of reviews near mine. Not a bad guy, but you have to buy a very expensive textbook, lectures get boring, nothing is posted to Brightspace, homework is long and repetitive, and the tests are nothing like the lectures, textbook, or homework assignments.
Final is worth 50% of grade, and you are given absolutely 0 material to use for review. Even the TAs and tutors have no idea what to use for review. Lecture consists of him talking about 1 graph, and then whatever else is on his mind. Lecture is absolutely nothing like exams. Every homework took 4+ hours, and does not help with exams. Run away FAST
Terrible, worst professor i've had at Binghamton. I have no idea how he has even one good review
Nice guy although lectures are kinda boring, really need to read the textbook. Discussion attendance is mandatory.
Although, he is obviously very knowledgeable and a good person this is one of the hardest classes I've taken at bing. His lectures are boring and hard to follow, he talks at you for 1.5 hours so there are no slides. tests are HARD AS F*** (class average was 50%), so get ready to study hard, but the curve is crazy. lets you bring a cheat sheet tho.
This class is challenging as it's a major requirement, but Barry Jones is reasonable and cares about student success. Lectures are dull, but understanding the textbook helps. Tests are tough, but grades are curved: 70% tests, 30% homework/MyLab. Use office hours and stay on top of material for the best results. Good luck some of you will need it.
Honestly, given the professors available for Binghamton University, he ain't half bad. His curves are good, you'll definitely fall asleep in class but if you pay attention it might pay off. Class is based on two exams and a fair bit of participation, hw's and FRQs which are all completion based and combined hold good weight. Overall : not bad
Avoid if possible. I studied so much for this class. Thought I did well on the final just to end up horribly. Lots of homework that takes a while, expensive materials, FRQs back to back, have to go class to get the FRQ as he only passed them out at the end of class. Lectures aren't helpful. Responds to emails but has an ego that is unapproachable
Barry Jones was hands down one of my best professors ever. Certainly my best Econ professor. His ability to impart knowledge and translate technical terms and models is incredible.
midterm and final make up most of your grade, no slide show notes, no practice problems or tests, extremely boring, useless lectures. he teaches formulas and graphs but doesn't give examples of how to apply or use them for the tests. he does let you use cheats sheets though which was the only way to pass this class.
like just don't... you have to really really struggle to get an A. It's not impossible but just so so so so so so so so annoying. He's a fine person, just a terrible lecturer (no slides, just talks at you for 1.5 hours).
If you pay attention to his lectures you'll do good. Doesn't use slides but is a very good lecturer. Pretty light on homework. Chill dude
Professor Jones is by far the best professor I've ever had throughout college. His ability to clarify complex theories and problems makes the class very enjoyable and fun. As long as you pay attention, read the textbook as supplement, and take time to throughly learn the material through his problem sets/asking questions you will do very well.
Lectures are messy, practically learned everything through the textbook because they were so disorganized and boring. No actual lecture notes. Still had to attend lectures because you had to pick up FRQs at the end of class then hand them in the next time we had class. Midterms were terribly hard, many questions were very open ended.
