Knows his ECON.
Sometimes to patient with people, but wants to make sure everyone "get's it". Read the material and he'll be thrilled. Extra credit is a breeze...
I personally think that he is on the side of left wing. He treats his students fairly. That is why Barry is the kindest instructor I have ever had.
Barry can be tight sometimes, but if you fall behind or just don't read the text especially if its hybrid/online...you WILL get screwed on his tests. The midterms we had were exact out of the online quizzes (for Hybrid)...Barry isn't the easiest teacher, but he tries to help you learn
A hippy who lives on pointing out where anyone to the right of Howard Dean has gone wrong. Did not welcome debate, difficult tests. I'd prefer to take Bell. I was there for Econ, not Poli Sci.
Barry is a straight forward teacher when it comes to Econ. He knows EVERYTHING about it and will go on into great lengths to make it clear and simple even though it is a difficult subject to grasp. He might be a liberal hippy, but he makes great points in all his cases. Can be intimidating if you have a question...STUDY HARD for his tests and READ!
Very Helpful... if you have questions, ask him and 100% will be solved... I took the online class and I recommand it than the in-class course. He wrote everything in the blackboard very clear. QUIZ can redo until u get 100%...NICE HELPFUL AND PATIENT. But you have to do a little bit of work. RECOMMAND online class with him!

I loved Kotlove and his sweaters that were too big for him. Econ was a little over my head, but he was very helpful. he even let me make-up a quiz that i missed. it was difficult to learn the concepts because a lot of class was spent talking about politics rather than the coursework

Not one of my favorites!
Very helpful instructor.
Took this as an on-line course. Pretty straight forward class. Weekly discussions, weekly quiz, and three multiple choice exams that also include a separate essay. Read the text and use the text CD to get the most out of the class - if you do that you will most likely get an "A".
Horrible teacher! Tests are impossibly hard. The students who ace his quizes only do so by taking them over and over again for hours on end. Questions and graphs VERY unclear! He never labels them properly so you have no idea what you're looking at! Never follows the language of the book so you have to guess! Take this from another school!
I've taken every Econ class that Barry has offered, and his style is what keeps me coming back. The way he presents things and has personal opinion can be downright hilarious, but you learn too. I would recommend this teacher to anyone in a second. If you do the work, you'll pass. If you read the material, you'll pass the tests. Simple as that.
Tests are too hard!! Many assignments!!!
I took this class online. I think this class will be too tough if you take it online. Moreover, he only assigned us to read the book and posted weekly discussion, but tests were so hard and more than you could imagine.. Graphs were awful and his tests werent straightforward at all... Not recommended!!
very very very hard tests, unclear graphs, quite helpful, but not recommended. TOO HARD!!! the class average was about 72% overall. That's a tell tale sign of a hard instructor!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that Kotlove is a informative teacher who tries to give you all the chances you need to suceed.
This teacher gets involved...I like that.
I took this prof for Econ 201 and 202. Excellent, helpful instructor. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take this class. His tests are hard. Econ not an easy subject. I wouldn't take Econ with any other prof. One of my all time favorite professors!
I took his online class. VERY helpful teacher. CHALLENGING class. He makes you work hard for your grade- which is great because we are in COLLEGE. LOTS of reading. DIFFICULT EXAMS. Class average was like 74%. Take him if you're SERIOUS about the class.
tight...kinda hard at times but overall an awesome teacher
He was a nice techer overall but it was hard to understand when he got exited about the topic. =)
i take an online class, and I kind of like this class because all the quiz are repeatable!!! and the multiple exam lots of them also come from the quizzz!!! However, you have gotta read the book for the essay exam though.
The teacher is great, but the class is hard! I had a hard time with weekly quizzes and exams! I almost never got any question right – STUDY HARD!
Took this class online. Really hard class, pay close attention to everything you read in the chapters, especially the graphs. I would not recommend this class to any slackers. Over all, excellent teacher, you will definitely learn in this class.
I didn't get much out of this class. Quizes are repeatable! Two big paper (I put on some effort!) Just do all the works and 4.0 is too close!!!
Really good teacher w/ generous!
This guy is very down to earth and allows flexibility for defensible positions. He doesn't require much of the discussion board posts, just that you make them. Quizzes and tests are simple enough just looking up the answers as you take them. Somewhat intensive reading (1 ch/wk) is required to get the most out of this class. Interesting material
Took his combined class 201 and 202. It was great. He is a very enthusiastic prof. and he really knows his stuff. Difficult subject to cover so it takes some work to get a good grade. He's all about having fun and making sure the class 'get's it'
Hard class because of the subject complexity. Really good teacher. He is very knowledgeable and offers great insight. Tests are tough, read your book and ask questions. He is active on Blackboard and expects responses to be informative on the chapter studies. Really learned a lot from his class.
Mr. Kotlove has a problem. His problem is that instead of instruct, he perfers to confuse and showcase his unmatched ability to formulate a test question that he himself could not answer. He suffers from the I am not teaching at a University complex, thus his community college students suffer and grades are compromised. The guy is a GPA Killer.
Don't ever take dual class! Ridiculously hard. He's got a high expectation. His tests and assignments are difficult. He's an awesome teacher for ECON majors but not students like me.(I had 3.87 GPA before taking this class and this is my last quarter.Think about it)He's not helpful since he wants you to figure everything out by reading before class.
Awesome teacher! Does a great job of involving students in discussion and relating material in a way that makes sense.
If you are looking for an easy class, I do not recommend Barry. If you are looking for a world class learning experience, I do recommend Barry. Hands down the best teacher i've ever had.... and I got a 'C' :-)
Took micro econ with Kotlove, course grade depends on quizzes, discussion board, two papers and the final. More time consuming than other econ courses; 3 discussion board posts a week plus responses. The term paper and final essay are easy if you follow directions, but still time consuming. Overall- I have no specific complaints.
Took Kotlove for Micro last quarter and thought it was an easy class, if you read the material. Now I'm taking Kotlove for Macro and for some reason it's a little harder. The material is based upon micro. so make sure your know your micro!
I am taking this class online and it is so ridiculously hard. There is no direction on what to study for on the weekly quizzes. The teacher doesn't write the quizzes but instead relies on the text book web site to generate the quizzes for him. I have heard from people who have taken his classes on campus that they are easy, online is a different st
I took Barry Kotlove this quarter and both Econ 201 and 202 were combined for a 2 hr class. If you dont read the material and dont attend class you'll be lost from the start. However, he has a great sense of humor and grades on a curve so its vary fair. Would recommend him anyday!
Take his combination of Econ 201 and 202 class. As long as u read the book carefully, u should do well on his quiz. Grade very easy on essay. Clear the failed attempt on ur quiz as he promises. Overall, good teacher
Very solid professor, extremely clear with due dates and what he expects for all of his assignments. Must attend class and read the textbook or you will be extremely confused. Recommend his Econ 201/202 class. One of the hardest classes you will take at EdCC, but you will feel extremely successful once you finish.
If you have a chance to take this class on campus, do it. I wouldn't recommend to take the online class with B. Kotlove. Material is not structured and not a lot of help from the instructor. Poor teaching quality.
Took the combined Econ 201 and 202 class. Of over 20 classes I've taken at Edmonds this is in the top 3 or 4. The study of economics is something Barry has poured his life into, and continues to study every day. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to actually learn and not just looking for another grade on their transcript.
I took the combined class last quarter. This class was EXTREMELY helpful if you actually wanna learn.Teacher is SUPER NICE!!! Quizzes are all in the book! Read it carefully and you will do great. Essays are hard, so plan ahead. Barry is the nicest teacher ever! He always wants to help his student.
Plenty of homeworks, quizs and essays, with pitifully little time for that. Essays' topics are very abstract, with lot of limitations (closed book and not allow to use outside resources) Not recommend to take online classes with him
Very Difficult. Took his online microeconomics class. He is more concerned with bombarding you with work then he is that you understand the material. Weekly quizzes that have very little reference to the study material, 1-2 chapters a week, homework assignments & discussion board posts. The material is hard & Barry is disorganized. Dont Take!
Going into this class I was pretty excited, but there is just so much information to absorb. I took this class online and I would not recommend it. I'm sure this teacher is pretty cool but online is not the way to learn this subject.
Excellent teacher!!! very knowledgeable and helpful; he is very passionate about this subject and appreciates your effort. As long as you read the material, do the homework and try your best you'll do good.
I took this class online and only recommend it online if you are VERY organized and have the time to commit to it. There is a lot to learn and the concepts can be difficult, so it's important that you actually study the terms. One quiz, 2-4 DB's, and 1-2 homework modules per week. Barry was helpful, answered questions quickly, and grades fairly.
I absolutely love this teacher!!! He listens to his students, is very funny and entertaining, and has no in class midterm or final for the dual 2 in 1 Micro/Macro economics class. Highly recommend taking them together with this teacher its simply amazing and not hard at all!
Do not take this class online it is very hard and time consuming. unless you are prepared to focus all your time and energy then it is hard to get a good grade. In class he is beyond amazing though, online i would not recommend.
Barry does a good job and provides a structured online class that is challenging, but not too difficult. His expectations are reasonable, his direction is clear, and he responds to questions quickly and thoroughly. He also has graded this class on a slight curve which is very helpful.
Easy if you do the work. Teacher was always helpful and my questions were answered on time. Homework, weekly quizzes and essay is what you are graded on. If you do all the work and ask for help when needed you will do good. All quizzes are multiple choice and can be difficult if you don't understand material. If you need help ask, teacher is great.
The online course is difficult and I'd suggest taking it in person if you're able. If you do take it online, the prof comes across really stern but if you meet with him, you'll find he is super nice and actually wants to help you and make sure you understand the subject. Ask for help if you need it and the class will be a lot easier.
He is a very good professor. He is interested a lot in economics, and knows the material very well. If you enjoy economics, you'll enjoy this class. His quizzes are all online and you'll find it not really hard with open book. Best Econ teacher!
Basically, there is one quiz per chapter but not easy by any means. It was a lot of reading to me but I HAD to read in order to understand the material to the best of my ability-no shortcuts here. Barry is helpful if you seek it. There was a massive paper at the end that basically shows him whether you actually paid attention, but decent grading.
He gives too much work on Learnsmart, discussions, and quizzes. We need to write a very long essays at the end of the term, and the instructions are not really clear.
Do not take this class with Kotlove. He does not do anything for 10 weeks then supposedly grades a 12-15 page essay in 2 days! Haha. Anyway, the lowest score on the essay is 240 (80%) so if one does well on quizzes, which are textbook publisher written, this is an easy 4.0. You won't learn anything, but that does not seem to be the point.
Although this class was pretty challenging, I ended up liking it. The structure to me is very organized. It's one quiz, some Learnsmart work, and a discussion each week. Because it was online, I did feel the disconnect from the teacher but I still ended with a 3.5. The essay at the end of the quarter was too much though omg
Horrible instructor
I took Eco form Kotlove and Lothyan. For me, Kotlove is better than Lothyan even though he required every student to submit 12 pages essay at the end of the quarter. His quizzes are easier than Lothyan's exams. Eco online class requires you to by yourself. But if you have any questions, you can email Kotlove. He responses emails very fast.
He answers emails very fast, and won't give you too much homework. His quizzes are easy than Lothyan's exams. He requires every student to submit a twelve pages paper at the end of the quarter. It sounds scary, but you will get a good grade as long as you follow his instruction. If you need ECO 201 & 202, Kotlove will be a good choice.
This teacher believed in opportunity, was passionate about his job, and knew the stuff he needed to teach to the class. The work was a lot, but it was an easy amount. In addition, half the people on here had probably taken both the Macro and Micro which was 10 credits. That much work for 10 credits is a fair amount. Including honors.
You can tell he loves Economics by how he teaches and discusses the material. He is very bright and delivers the class material at a level that allows students to understand it and relate current events to it. He is there for you benefit and will do everything he can to help you achieve a good grade. If you struggle with econ, take his class!
One quiz and some learnsmarts weekly. Quizzes are extremely hard. You have to read and fully understand the text and even then it's unknown if you'll get 100%. He offers outside help, which is nice. Papers are long and very broad, unclear rubrics. Grade heavily based off of quiz grades (out of 40, 20 q's 20 mins).
Barry is a nice quy, but the course was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. His lectures are too broad, while his quizzes that are every two weeks were very hard and he doesn't give you enough time for the quiz. It is 50 minutes for 30 questions that include some calc and graphs. Two tests that are super hard especially the one in class.
His grading criteria is totally frustrating because you have to earn your grade. You won't have your full grade until the end of the class. At the end of the class you have 0, but the total number of points is more than 1000. This is so confusing and I think it's a very bad type of grading. The average score of in class test was 102 out of 150.
His tests and quizzes are on nothing you learned and are way harder. He says to use the power points and study guides but even then you will not pass, probably. I was a 4.0 student before I took him. If you want to maintain your GPA don't take him because you probably won't learn what you need to.
He knows Economics, but could really work on the teaching part. Lectures are often scrambled and feels useless when applying some of it towards quizzes and essays (which are often harder questions than what you "learn"). Very responsive and helpful when you need it, and if you meet his criterion for assignments you will get a well earned grade.
I've taken both his classes: in person Macro Honors and online Micro. This is hands down the best professor I've had at Edmonds. I'll be doing my BS in Econ because of him. You can go up to his office and he will motivate you and always be there for you. I always enjoy of discussions on ethical topics during his after hours. Take his class!
Barry is an awesome professor. He was so understanding of my need for some flexibility, and helped to take away so much stress/writing anxiety. If you take his class, don't hesitate to ask him for help!
Awful! Dont ever choose this class! I think he doesn't respect students and ignoring students' efforts. And he was unable to articulate the course of instruction.
I just dropped his online class and it was EXTREMELY hard to comprehend. Even the homework assignments are timed. (who even sets a time limit for HOMEWORK, seriously?) He does NOT give you enough time for quizzes and the quizzes are about 40 questions. I immediately dropped this class because I'm not risking my GPA because of him. Don't take online
1. I took the online Macro class. 2. No extra credit. 3. Quizzes are 20-30 questions, worth 75 points, timed for 45 minutes. 4. 3 discussions every week, 2 replies each. 5. Just ask him about anything you're worried about. 6. 2 MAJOR papers. (don't start late) 7. MH Connect Exercises (due the end but do them 2-3 times week) (timed)
Gotta work really hard in this class.
homework itself was pretty simple and easy using a learnsmart book online. The tests were complete garbage on the grading. Basically if you get 100% on all the homework and an average of 70% on tests your grade is gonna be at the max a 75%. So if you don't understand the content fully, you might pass but GPA is ruined.
Please try not to listen to the other ratings about Professor Kotlove. Yes, his class is hard, but I guarantee you will get out of it what you put into it. If you are struggling with anything whatsoever, reach out to him and he will meet with you one on one for as long you need. He grades discussions and papers based on effort.
This is the hardest class I have taken. He recommends 8 hours of studying outside of class each week which is too much in my opinion. A lot of reading each week. Lectures arent very helpful but he is a very nice guy. If you email him he will help you in whatever way he can. I would recommend taking this class only if you have time for it.
ECON&201 with Professor Kotlove was one of the hardest classes I've taken (so much studying), but extremely rewarding and I learned a lot. The quizzes are hard, but the homework/discussions are easy points (as long as you do it on time) and he grades the papers pretty leniently so your grade will balance out. He is very kind and responds quickly.
Hardest class I've taken & I was a 4.0 student before this class, but it's not terrible & he's a decent prof. I took both Micro & Macro. The exams brought my grade down a lot, but he does grade fairly on the discussions and the 2 papers. He allows a page of notes for exams. After midterms-ish, there are no more discussions or proctoring for exams.
If you're a transfer student, do not take this class. The grade has brought down my cgpa and transfer gpa a lot. 60% goes to assessment and 40% goes to assignment, test and quizzes are nothing like the assignment.
I took ECON201 and 202 at the same time and was blasted with a dozen homework assignments (not including papers, quizzes, discussions and exams) each week. He's very by the books and a pretty nice guy, but the courseload is just abysmally and boring. Read a textbook and answer multiple choice questions. Rinse, repeat. Ugh.
So. Much. Work. I studied constantly and when the tests come around, the questions are so hard it feels like all the studying was a waste of time. Too much material for the time we have to learn and would be better off helping us understand the applications. I was a 4.0 student but Barry ruined that for me. Will happen again in Macro.
I was nervous about taking his ECON 202 class, but don't listen to anyone who complains about him. Each week, there's a lot of homework, three discussion posts, and three replies. Quizzes, exams, and two papers. I have received 191/200 on one of them, I completed it within one day straight without reviewing It's easy to get an A+ BUT WORK HARD!!
This class is pretty difficult to receive an A in. He is not super harsh on grading when it comes to papers, but tests/quizzes will significantly bring your grade down if you do not do well on them. But overall, I actually really liked Barry. He was very understanding, caring, and always helpful. The class is a hefty challenge, but it is worth it.
Barry is very accessible during his Tuesday Office Hours. The discussion boards is the best part of the class. I recommend going to him if you have a hard time picking a topic for your papers. As for doing the class, it requires that you study in order to get a good grade on the test and quizzes. I highly recommend taking Barry as a professor!
He's mostly boring. Has no lectures except have the structure over and over again. Homework and learning is nothing special. Has papers that you need to write in this economy class. Tests are very hard, require a lot of studying. Accessible after hours. Discussions are somewhat interesting.
Barry's curriculum is pretty unique. Homework and readings only count for about 15% of your grade. The class was split into 3 midterms, each one accounting for 20% of the total grade. The last 25% was graded by 2 papers and discussion posts. If you aren't good at taking tests, this class might not be for you. I was a 4.0 student before this class.
I took Professor Kotlove for Microeconomics, and even though we did not meet in person (online class), I felt his attentiveness and presence as a student. RM
BK is a great prof. highly recommend Most of your grade is basic participation: discussions (3 weekly, 1 rep. each), midterms (3), final (opt. for Mic, mand. for Mac), papers (two per qtr),& book. I was supposed to get an A- in mic but he moved it up to an A because he saw my work and regraded my 2nd paper (I messed up on 3rd MT) really great prof.
I absolutely love Prof. Kotlove, he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed in the class. He has lectures that help you understand the current chapter and the homework load is fairly acceptable. Took him for both micro and macro, genuine guy and the best teacher I've had in this school.
Amazing guy. Class was very difficult and exhausting because I took econ 201 and 202 combined into one class. Uses honorlock, which is annoying. Tests are very hard to prepare for, and the midterms are brutally long. However, Barry is very knowledgeable and provides a lot of resources. I would recommend taking 201 and 202 from him separately.
He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His quizzes and midterms weren't that hard and he will give you the option to do an optional exam to help with your grade. I would recommend taking him for econ.
If you expect to go into this class and hope the lecture is all you need to pass the class like when we were back in high school, don't. This is a very fast-paced, self-study course. Do the homework, read the book, use Khan Academy, and use the provided resources. At this point, the lecture is only for attendance.
He said you need 2h/day out of class to do work, that's a lie. I am literally dedicating the whole 8h/day per week just to do his class. there is A LOT of assignments. If you have no damn idea about the economy he would makes you more confused. Please, if you can take it separately, do so. Don't look down on 10 credits class.
Exams and quizzes were “main grade” which could make you get low score as it's hard. He only gave optional final exam (that's supposed to help our grade), but it only increases your score up to 1% or 2%. Besides that, the Connect you did that has never-ending part didn't even increase your score that much.
Kotlove's class is no easy ride, but engaging with the material pays off. Quizzes are challenging, but the assignments and papers are manageable. Consider using unstuck study alongside the textbook for study prep.
