has accent...but he explains everything
hard accent...even with explanation still dont know what he is sayin
Hard to understand this teacher
doesnt cover any relevent material, takes the entire class to try and explain a simple concept. Cant speak english, and should stick to research and not teaching. Horrible professor.
He can't speak english, he can't teach!!! Loved the class...I can sleep all the time cuz its at night, make friends with the TA...he can sign ur name in. He is blind as a bat. Mason Hall with only 2 TA's...Fantastic. Aced Final

helpfulness would be higher, except his accent gets in the way, destroys the purpose of clarifying anything if you cant understand him...
YAWWWNNNNNN..... this guy is boring, but hes HILARIOUS... hes always laughing at his own jokes. the best thing is that he is very thorough and goes over everything carefully. also, he doesnt make you buy the book cuz he teaches it all himself.
Unclear, unhelpful and unfair. Loves to kill your GPA.
huh? what? this? where? there? can you repeat that? thats what you will be asking if you take his class...you will not understand anything he says. you have to be Barry Ma to understand Barry Ma
Unfair and dishonest. Typical Baruch prof.
though his accent is a bit tough i found him to be very thorough and a fair grader. he really does crack himself up at least once per class, and it helps you get through the monotony of econ.
I think he pretty good because all i had to do was hand in the paper.
Unfortunately he's not able to share all the wisdom stuck in his head. He keeps repeating himself, boring the class and if you ask a question he makes you feel like you're an idiot. He did serious damage to my self-esteem, but his tests are easy.
very intelligent guy, unfortunately accent/repetition prevents efficient learning from occuring. Easy if you take down everything he says (even if it is more than once)
Medium test, no curve, 35% for mid-term, 5% for project, and 60% for final. If you mess up the final, u are done
if you take Eco 4k with him, the class is so easy. His curriculum is very limited so he just repeats himslef all day. NO attendance, come for tests and just read the stuff he posts. its like reading 10 pages for the year and doing a page of probs, nice.
I think he is not that bad. At least he teaches the couse at a slow pace. The exam is very easy, just pay attention in class. Not much homework to do.
Accent restricts him from sharing his knowledge. Reminds me of a Chinese Fire Marshall Bill from In Living Colour
He was very hard to understand. Had only 2 exams, the first of which was 2/3 of the way into the semester. He was one of the worst teachers I ever had, and the foul!
I had 100% on midterm and ended up with a B+. He wouldn't show me my final and he didn't even want to hear me out. You cannot negotiate with him, he gets upset if you ask anything, he never answers your questions and makes you feel stupid. Stay away!
He's a Bad Man, A very, very very Bad man, If u want to ruin ur GPA than by all means take him. U cannot understand him, he should take some English courses. And than, maybe he can share his knowledge to the Class. Unfortunity that is not the class.Beware
Go to class and pay attention. Tests come from notes. no homework and nothing to read.
****. HE'S THE WORSE PROF, TO HAVE FOR THIS CLASS. DON'T TAKE HIM. HIS M/C IS CONFUSING AS HELL. ONLY 6 PEOPLE OUT OF 90 PEOPLE GOT A'S IN THE CLASS. 6 PEOPLE FAIL AND THE REST WHERE B, C, AND D... YOU DO THE MATH.
GOT an "A-" but that was because of the easy tests and my previous knowledge about ECO. If you are new to ECO don't take him because you won't understand what he is taking about (Defective ENG). But he is an easy professor.
Very easy tests and material. No need of book at all. Just notes, so better be in class. But that's all. 1 midterm, giva us sample that was 70% the same, 1 assignment, that u can copy from someone. And is very clear, depite his heavy accent. Recommended.
he is an easy teacher. must go to his classes cuz there is no textbook and the exams are based on his letures. his sounds like a broken record when he teaches the material and has a really strong accent. make sure you study his sample questions for the exam and you should do fine.
Prof. Ma repeats things all class. He doesnt cover a wide range of topics so the info you need to know is limited. I advise you to attend every class and write what he writes in order to do well.
Absolutely one of the WORST professors I'v ever hard. First of all, you cannot understand a word he says. Secondly, since he doesnt use a text, you have to go by what he says..if you can understand him. His grading system is brutal..I went to the final with an A- and ended up with a B.
He's okay... doesn't go by the text, so don't even bother buying it. Doesn't take attendence, but you need his notes for the test. His grading is okay, his tests are okay... 12-15 true/false and a couple of short answers. I recommend, if you can understand him, you can learn a lot.
if u cant get into ayari's class then take Ma. forget about Su (hes worse than Ma) theres no textbook, hw, or attendance. it's all optional. all u need to do is just come to class from day1 cuz it will take a while for you to understand him. he gives exercises which are similar to midterm & final.
i think he is a good prof. i like him. he teaches very slow. you just need to come to class everyday in order to understand the material. some of you said he's boring and unclear, that is b/c the subject itself is boring and unclear. he did his best in teaching it.
he's an easy professor compared with the others teaching the same topic, covers less material. students are allowed to bring a formula sheet during exams, exams are more or less similar to his review sheets. even though he doesnt take attendance, come to class and you should do okay in the course.
No text, come to class, take down everything he writes and says and get use to his accent. He allows you to bring a page of notes for exams and exams are very similiar to exams. He's a good, not great professor but he's probably as good as Ayari. Final is 60% so make sure you study your notes!
This is the hardest class in Baruch by far. I finished it with a B- and still don't know what it was about. No attendance. He just repeats himself over and over, make sure you come to class to take notes and do the exercise assignments. don't get the book, you don't need it. Subject is boring.
i thought i was going to end up with a C+, but he gave me an A-. he's not as bad as people say. just come to class, write down everything he says. no hw, book or attendance. but if you wanna pass with a B-, you need to come to class. his exercises are similar to final& midterm. take very good notes!
He doesn't speak perfect English but he's a good ECO professor. Gave practice tests which were based on his notes and from the ECO book. Exams were similar to his notes. He gave a midterm and final both of which were 40 m/c q's and one short essay.
Pretty good teacher once you get over the accent.
Solly, no speaka engrish ...
No text, come to class, take down everything he writes and says and get use to his accent. He allows you to bring a page of notes for exams and exams are very similiar to exams. He's a good, not great professor but he's probably as good as Ayari. Final is 60% so make sure you study your notes! don't take him if you donot want to ruin ur GPA
I really did not enjoy this class. It was sooooo boring. and if u think u know boring, youre wrong believe me. Its not hard copy his excercises on the sheet of paper youre allowed to bring it helped me pull off an A- with no knowledge of the topic whatsoever.
He tries to explain thoroughly by using the same concept in many diff sentences. excercies r helpful n harder than the tests. 1 midterm, 1 project, 1 final. final was kinda tricky. midterm was easy cuz he thought our class was dumb. don't miss any class cuz all the stuff is related n u wont understand if u miss the beginnin of it. overall not bad!
He sounds like Elmer Fudd. Thats what I learned in this class.Does not teach Econometrics, i dont know what he teaches, it is not econometrics. Great clas to catch up on you daydreams; but he doesnt take attendance, so why go to class? silly wabit.
he's kinda easy, just review his study sheets, do not buy the book.
He's the worst professor I've ever had. Pro. Ma repeats himself twice and he's not helpful in explaining the concepts of Macro. There's a mandatory attendance in the class and he does not curve on the exams.
he's kinda easy, but u need to study his practice questions for exam, easy project, but pretty boring lecture
Not bad. Very smart guy - not the best at explaining stuff.
both midterm and final exams are easy. take him
He does not give you textual support for his class, if you want to get a good grade teach yourself the information and go to his class for review. Very smart man but poor teacher.
He is very EASY. Take him and you won't regret. Gives outlines of his lectures. Two multiple choice exams (midterm and final), which are primitive. Almost no work. It's really difficult to get anything lower than A.
Easy! He'll help you if you really want the help. no book needed. just do his exercises and take notes. possible to get an A.
Unfortunately the guy have very serious problems explaining the material. He doesn't teach, just keeps repeating the same stuff class after class. You'd better take someone else
If your lucky to get into his class, great. Otherwise you're probably stuck with that jerk off Su. I had an A going into the final with Su and he gave me a C. Then fled on a sabatical to Japan. I tried to contest my grade to no avail. Avoid that ass----. He should go back to Wharton, but they probably fireed his ass, hence why he's at Baruch.
This guy isnt a very good teacher. He doesnt teach anything. The only topic he went over was the sylabus on first day of class. You will learn nothing in here.
Babbles on about the same topic but I guess that's how I got to understood the concepts. Took him in the summer so one midterm and one final. Not as bad as people say. No text required. Just take notes and make sure you understand everything. I got a B+. An A is definitely possible if you pay attention. Attendance is also taken.
He's ok. He's really not as bad as they make him seem. His exams are similar to his handouts and are straight from his notes. You dont have to buy the book. And you get to bring a note sheet for his exam. If you do his excercises a few times you should be fine.

This is one of the worst professors in Baruch College. I studied hard for the class and earned a grade of C. He doesnt know how to teach. His midterm is pretty normal but the final is extremely difficult. Gives 2 exams and one project. You dont need to buy the textbook but you dont learn anything. If you can choose a different professor.
THE WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.HE ONLY THINKS HOW TO GIVE HIS STUDENTS LOWER GRADE.HIS TESTS ARE EASY,HOWEVER YOU WILL NEVER GET THE GRADE WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT.TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO SEE HOW&WHY IT IS SO.
I really didnt need to have this prof in my life in the fall. You dont need a text book, just know the handouts and you MAY get a decent B-. Otherwise most times you cant understand his english, he repeats a topic for a whole month and u absolutely dont learn anything in the class.
Unclear explanation. Hard to get a high grade. Boring class. Will never use it in your life.
it's very boring boring and boring, he keeps repeat things. I thought it's hard to be a professor, after you get out of his class every one could teach better than him, for sure.
Exam easy=very easy. Repeat over and over again=helpfulness+clarity. Make you want to have another prof. like this=your interest...Overall=Priceless
Better pay a circus & watch a real clown; would be cheaper & maybe more fun but more intelligent for sure. Repeats same stuff on&on. I don’t think he ever know what he's talking about. Crappy tests, no definite answers, he claims that he curves while he grades, he grades as he pleases. Tragicomedy I’d like to congratulate Baruch HR for hiring Mr.Ma
This professor is an abosolute disaster. He seems friendly and smiles a lot, sometimes for no particular reason, but then on the test it is an absolute house of pain. The hardest professor in eco 4000. Can't teach at all. Stay away at all costs or suffer.
You are better off taking another Eco 4000 professor. Only 9% of the class will end up with an A. All the other people will ger like a C+. There are better Eco 4000 teachers in this school. Just check out the class of schedules.
DONT TAKE THIS PROF!!! If you value ur GPA, stay away!! Has strong chinese accent. Does not know how to teach course. What is taught in class is not on test. No curves or extra credit pts. You are better off taking Prof. Cakan.

I have a good GPA and this class was a piece of cake. He gives good notes and you don't need to read the book. He gives questions for review that are identical to the exam. He is a nice guy and I feel really bad for all these raings. He's not such a moster. Everyone who likes to learn will get an easy A. The ungifted ones will fail, so stay away.
He is very very unhelpful outside class. He always locks his office's door--even during office hours. So this gives me an impression that he doesn't want to talk to his students at all outside classroom. Btw, I dont think he ever smiles--he sneers when he thinks we are stupid. Worst professor at Baruch.
Just finished his exam , which was not hard. I've got to tell you this.He does not smile. He looks down on you and sneers at you. His grading is not based on how much you know, but how much you write down every aburd things he repeated in the class.ECo4000 is very important class if you plan to go to Grad school..don't take him,you will regret.
It is better to choose a good text book from a library and read over it than taking this guy's class. I don't understand why Baruch ,which aspires to be one of the best business school, keep hiring this guy and other good for nothing professors. fire them!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM...he is not helpful at all...Exams are difficult, he wants u write as much as you can and still doesnt give u the credit that u deserve..Gave me a D+ for his class, and when i went up to him, he did not even show me my exam..even though i insisted alot...
This prof give me my first " D" on my transcript !! Don't know why he is still around teaching at Baruch. They can do better without him !! I could have ..if only I had known better not to take him!!
i think his class is easy. i got a B+ without buying the book. my friend got a B+ without going to class, my other friend only reviewed his notes before the exam day and got an A . i think other professors are much harder , but not him
Taking his summer session now. He's not that bad okay? He's nice and explain everything to us. Although he has accent, that doesn't mean he's not a good professor. Take him!!

Just finished taking his final. I am a very harsh critic and I have to admit he wasnt bad at all. (Very good by my standards). Most of the people who complain about him sit in the back. dont come to class or lack any knowledge once so whatever. About 90% of the test comes from the notes/excercises which he stresses over and over. I def recommend!
his english isnt that great and he STILL manages to be one of the best teachers at baruch...i literally didnt have to open the book at all. Gives practice exam questions before the test which are terrific and allows one sheet of notes. Not an easy A but an easy B if u just pay attention in class.
He wasted no time in saying over and over and over how we don't have enough time in the summer session to learn all the material. No professor, this is why we have over 6 hours of class a week. Do you learn ANYTHING in his course? Of course not. Passing the class is definately possible but a huge waste of time either way.
PH.d from standford does not make him smart or a good professor. He doesn't know how to teach. worse still, he sneers at and looks down on most students.he closed his room on days he is supposed to be there. after his taking the classs, which I got A, I relatively less knowledge than others who took different professors . One of the worst I've ever
I really do not think that this professor is as bad as people say. Guys! He has a PHD from Stanford, so stop saying he is stupid and he should be fired. Do not blame the teacher for your own laziness, because you cannot get an easier A then this. If you cant get an B in his class, you dont belong to college.
Damn Gollum cant speak English. Doesnt make any sense on anything. I am so mad, I wasted my time and money. Dont want to think about the opportunity cost. This is a crucial class damn it, how can Baruch do this to us? Grrrr.
Well, after reading about him I was scared but in fact if you can not get at least a B you should just kill yourself. He lets you bring one sheet with whatever you want on it. Use your pc and small fonts and write everything on it (both sides) and you are set. He provides sample questions which are identical to test questions. Take him!!!
very nice and helpful.he dose repeat a lot but he just wants to make sure everyone gets the material. just study the practice questions(70% is on the midterm and final). be aware he won't ask you the same Qs,but the answers are the same.just understand the practice Qs and be flexible about the answer.
He is very easy to understand. Let you bring formula sheet. You should at least get a B in this class.
I don't know why people give him such bad ratings. prof Ma is a very nice and very helpful guy. Speaking bad English doesn't make him a bad professor. compare to other professor, his class is an easy A class. I sleep on his class all the time and still end up with a A-. Guys, don's miss the chance to improve your GPA. highly recommand.
very great professor, learn a lot if u study hard, easy A, if u can't get an A, kill urself.
he has a very strong accent and teaches very unclearly.but if you go to class and do the practice exams you will do fine.exams are copies of the practice and you can use a sheet of notes.small term project and 2 exams.he was OK
He is proud of himself. Look down at students. Bad attitude.
tell me how a 4000-level business class can be so easy. Prof Ma is the man! easy tests, and extremely friendly! took him thru the summer, didnt study much, A-.
OMG, prof Ma, I love him, he was really easy, you have to sit in the front though otherwise u will go to sleep but not because he is boring, the material is boring. He explains everything that is going to be in the exam. All u have to do is study and pay attention to class. He's funny, attentive and fair. Take him, he's great.
He's Awesome!! Teaches everything step, by step. Extremely helpful. The only bad thing is his accent... but it by no means hinders the learning process. NO TEXTBOOK, NO HW. You learn AND get an A.
Ma Ma Mia. MR. Ma is a Very boring, but Very easy teacher. Dnt get me wrong he jokes n once in the blue they are funny. But, this is college, is not about joke. He teaches the subject clearly, and exams are sort of easy if you know the terms.Take him, accent bad but that's not a big deal like the last person said.
class is boring..exams are fair
If you want to learn something he is a waste of ur time! He basically teaches the formulas w/o any connection to real life. U will not remember anything after this course. His lectures are very boring and repetitive; has a hard time articulating ideas. To do well on the test u need to memorize the formulas and review exam. Attendance is mandatory.
Prof Ma is an excellent teacher. He explains difficult concepts clearly....step-by-step so even math-challenged students grasp it. He must be smart because he has thought out carefully how to teach a very difficult course. I understand the material. He prepares the class well for exams.
Very Easy compared to other Eco 4000 classes. True / False Exams with 3 additional applied problems. Attendance is key since he doesnt not follow the book, so dont buy it.
Stay away, waste of time.Doesn't teach anything, pretends he speaks english well. If yo rephrase something on exam, he will have hard time to understand it and will take points off. He uses a lot of assumptions that he wants you to remember and follow, omg just stupid...
Don't understand why there is someone said bad about him. Prof. Ma is so good. No textbook is needed, because he is textbook. Carrying two blank sheets to class,he really can explain things well. Accent is strong, but by following the notes you will find that doesn't matter. Don't miss class and Do the exercises (they are 80% in the real exams).
Well, its an easy easy class just just have to try a lil and pay attention. The tests are ok, you need to practice a bit to do well.
He doesnt know how to teach but you do need to study on your own based on his handouts and notes, no textbook required, class is fairly easy
Midterm, Final, Excel project. 5 absences allowed. He has to be the easiest one for ECO 4000. No book is used, just attend and take good notes. He explains everything detailed. Practice exercises that are posted are similar to real exam. He simplifies everything my making assumptions and rules that don't make sense, you just have to memorize them.
The material he lectures on and his manner of teaching it will not put you on par with students from NYU or Fordham. Teaches only very basic concepts and leaves out advanced topics you would find at other colleges with the same course. But, if all you really care about is getting an A on your transcript, I recommend him because it is not hard.
Do not get tricked! Although he is the easiest prof for econ 4000, you MUST take good notes and know them cold. Also, memorize the process to the practice exercises. He is very boring and does not teach well but there are not many better choices for econ 4000. I am an a- student and this stupid teacher screwed me w a c+
If you suck at grasping basic math concepts, then you're in for a bumpy ride. For the rest of us, this class is totally easy. He goes so slow, that you could easily study for an exam the night before, and be totally prepared. Don't buy the text, he never uses it. Just take good notes, you'll be set.
Very nice Professor, and easy!!! Must take good notes and use them for study before the exmas.Don't buy the book, he explains very well - lust pay attention. Easy A, its my opinion. Also, he is very nice. Good Luck!
He seemed like a great professor, definitely a nice guy, but he hardly explained what was expected in the exams and most people suffered. He goes too slow in class and tests on uncovered material. While the other professors may be harder at times, you will not be surprised and it would be much easier overall to get a better grade.
As advertised, easy A.Mid+Final.No textbook needed.Make sure u have good note and do practice exam.Extremely entertaining prof.Ignore hard formulas and materials. There will be a hard question in the test but its fair.Plus its only worth 6 points and u can get full point on all the others if u practice beforehand.Easy A and not learning so much.
No textbook,no HW, two exams(40%,55%),one project(5%)...Midterm is easy, no tricky question. Final is not easy. You need to understand concept well. Notes and practice questions are keys. GOOD LUCK. He is not easy unless you listen to him in class.
if you seriously want to waste your time, go for this man. this is an important class and given the importance of the material for the cfa you are cutting yourself short by taking him. I am so pissed that this happened to me.
The good: supposedly the easiest of all of the ECO 4000 professors. The bad: teaches too much theory and not actual applications of what this stuff is useful for. Problem is, in the real world they'll ask you to use what you learn. Not theory theory theory. The other prof's may be harder, but u will screw urself in taking him.
One of the easiest teacher for this class. Go to his class, take good notes and practice with his previous exmans and should be fine. He is quite confusing while explaining but he is easy overall!
The easiest A in your life! He teaches slowly and explains everything nicely. No textbook. If you understand perfectly your notes and go over practice final that he posts it should be a breeze. You will be the luckiest person if you could take him. Noone teaches better than him.
The. Worst. Professor. Ever. The fact that people like him are allowed to teach is baffling.
Why do you complain? At least he didn't lower my gpa like Millhiser did. I have nothing to BMa
Exams are really easy. He gives you problems to study. The guy who rated him with gpa 3.9 is a dummy. This is the easiest class ever.
I took this class because my friend said this professor is very nice and easy. But it turns out totally differnt. It is my 1st time rate a professor in my life because I work extremely hard but still got a B whereas I expected to ace this class. I didn't but the book and that's why I didn't do so well I guess.
I HAVEN'T KNOWN A GUY THAT LAUGHED THAT MUCH. VERY IMPRESSIVE. PROF.MA IS A UNIQUE PROFESSOR...HE IS GREAT!! I REALLY LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM. NO TEXTBOOK BUT BE PREPARED TO WRITE A LOT!!
a very nice prof. and sample exams are really helpful. U don't need to buy a textbook, but make sure u take notes. Exams are easy. Strongly recommend him
No textbook use. This guy has the biggest accent which is very anoyying! No EC, and both midterm (40%) and final (55%) are bluebook. Know your stuff by taking really good notes. This isn't a class to study last minute.
Don't be fooled by his smiles because he is not a nice guy. He is just sneering at students. The stuff he teach is retarded and you will NEVER use them in real life situations. Midterm was fairly easy but the Final was mad hard. He gives a lot of notes but they don't really make sense. Class is really boring. This is not an easy A class.
Don't need to by book, tons of notes, know them well. But study the practice problems welllll, tests are from there, on the test explain yourself the more you write the better but don't write nonsense he looks at that. He doesn't curve at the end, but on the teat instead of marking u a wrong answer he only takes 2 points away... Easiest prof for this course just don't be absent he takes attendance and everything he says write it
Easiest professor for this course. Really laid back and fair. Explains clearly. Dont need the textbook for this course, he gives you all the notes you need. Exams are easy compared to other professors. No calculations at all. Just T/F where you get to explain your answer. He marks no answer wrong, tons of partial credit. 2 exams & presentation.
I regret taking this guy. he always smile but i think that is the purpose to deceive you. his exam is weird that he takes off every possible point from you. so better be ready.
Prof. Ma is a good professor. I understood most of the topics. I know that this is an intensive class. So he isn't so bad. The exams are quite tricking so you need to read carefully, for the most part its all good.
1 midterm 40%, project 5% and a final 55%. Class was relatively easy. You don't need the textbook. Just attend the class and take notes and understand while he teaches. No home work though he will post few exercise with answers. Be sure to know all those for it will be similar to your exam. Very easy. Project is very easy too.
Crystal clear materials, you don't need the textbook, he explains it all in class, isn't that great! besides that, he writes down everything for you to copy down. study the notes and do exercises, 'cause thats what tests are about. a dedicated professor that deserves your respect
while most other baruch professors just sit there and speak about, prof ma worked hard that he writes down everything for you to copy and spends time explaining the materials, tests were fair. if you spend some time studying, you shouldn't have problem with them. overall great!
Easy A! A quiz, midterm, and final. All super easy since he gives review questions before that are exactly the same as the test! This was definitely my favorite class, it was easy but I still learned a lot. Highly recommend! Also he's a very nice and funny professor.
It was a relatively easy class, since he provides study questions that are the same or similar to what you will see on exams. His lectures are pretty boring, since he repeats himself over and over again. If you want an easy A take him, if you want to learn something pick someone else.
Definitely an easy class but still hard for some.Believe me you have to explain for True n False with detail proof n even points gets cut if Ur statement isn't sufficient enough. But if Ur clear about subject matter n attentive in his class won't be easy to score.
It's not an easy class. He made the questions really tricky and some of them impossible, since he never mentioned them in the class.even if you study enough-it is useless for the final, he'll find something that nobody can solve (beside him of course )
Hes okay. I have no complaints, relatively easy but he makes exams tricky. Textbook not necessary but you have to attend every class.
His lectures are not always crystal clear, but he does spend a lot of time explaining things. Midterm, Final, and a term project comprise your grade. Not the easiest subject, but you can do decent if you take good notes and practice. No hw, but he does post exercises. Tests are not too difficult, you get partial credit even if it is incorrect.
Very very bad professor. Had a hard time trying to understand him. Very knowledgable guy but just simply can't teach.
This class is not that hard - the concepts, equations, notes, etc are very simple to wrap your head around. What is hard are his exams. He makes the questions really tricky, so watch out for his wording. Make sure you study the sample questions he gives out. Also, don't buy the textbook. I never even opened it.
This professor is very confusing and repeats himself a lot, you won't learn much from him. The answers he is looking for on tests has to be what he wants or you won't get your points. Even though most of the test is T/F, he wants you to give an explanation that he sees fit. You can lost 50% points even though you answered correctly.
Very intelligence professor.Kind and patient to his students. Lectures may be confusing. But we really need to focus on understanding our materials. Not the professor's fault if we do not understand. He explained with examples.
From Stanford Uni. proud to have him as my professor. Doing well in his class, we must do the exercise he gave us.
Not an easy grader. Strict. Looks easy but difficult. Tricks you will never know. Avoid if you want to boost up your GPA.
His notes and instructions are crystal clear. Very easy class. Gives practice questions that are the same as the exam questions. Repetitive content. Only people who doze off during the lectures would fail. Also easy term project, easiest project you'll have in your life because he does it in class too. Great guy.
hard to understand. easy class but really boring. say content over and over. dont take him if u want to learn.
Easy class. Some tricky questions on the exam, but nothing too hard overall. The lectures are a pain to sit through, though. Take good notes, read his handouts, do the sample problems, and you'll be fine.
Professor Ma tries to be kind, shows that he cares about grade you'll get and etc. However, his grading policy is not clear, takes off points from correct answers. Expects you to write an essay, with all details using his own words. If you want to get a good grade, make sure you do that. Exams are tricky, he doesn't answer question you ask clearly
Didn't learn anything. I had to teach myself the entire thing. If you want to keep a high gpa take another prof or wait a semester.
Unclear and difficult to understand. Puts questions on the test that test your ability to read his mind rather than economics.
Bad class. Bad teacher. Harsh grader. Avoid.
His questions on the tests are worded very poorly. His lectures do not tie in well with his tests. His tests often much more difficult then the review sheets. Avoid this class and try to take something else.
This professor is by far the worst professor you can ever ask for. He should receive a 0 for overall quality because he will give you a sample exam, and then on the real exam; you have to sit there and decide what to put as your actual answer because he changes the solutions. he does not speak clear english whatsoever.
This professor is absolutely terrible. His classes are extremely heavy on lectures. It's hard to understand what he's saying. His practice exams are not like his exams. I'm an A student, but his exams have 'None of the Above' for every question which really throws you off. Stay away.
Overall great professor. Does have an accent, but still understandable and clear. Repeats things a lot which is necessary for this class. Midterm and Final are the entire grade. Just take notes every class and print his bb notes and use that to study. Textbook is a good reference but not required.
Professor Ma is a very intelligent person. He is a Stanford man and has a lot of experience in his field. He is even funny sometimes and good as a person. HOWEVER, he cannot teach. Classes are dry, he just teaches it but does not tell why this is important, how does this relate to the real world. Very poor teaching skills.
GPA killer. avoid at all cost.
No HW or E/C, 3 exams (mainly M/C). Prof. Ma is pretty cool as a person. No textbook so you have to take good notes in class. Though attendance is not required, I deeply believe you can benefit from coming to his class. He has a thick Cantonese accent, but you will get used to it. Final is harder than the first 2 exams. Overall, an okay class.
Such an easy class.
If you can't get an A in this class, you probably should rethink if college is for you. A boring class but very easy.
Graded on 3 things: Midterm (45%), Final (50%), and project (5% and easy). Midterm and final are composed of 8-10MC, 2T/F with written explanation, 1 question with calculation, and 1 question with multiple parts. Must attend class for notes. He gives you the tool and you have to apply it on exams. Not the best but not the worst.
Barry Ma is undervalued by students. He is one of rare few professors who actually tests on what he teaches. You must pay attention in class(I recommend recording the lectures) and write everything down. I took him for the summer and did bad on the midterm, because I slacked in the beginning. I did better on the final, and survived with a B.
Very repetitive when teaching the material. midterm and final are similar to the exercises that he posts. If you pay attention in class and complete the exercises, you should be able to get a good grade in this class easily.
I took him for 3200 and 4000. He's very clear and explains the concepts really well. Sometimes he can get repetitive but I think that helps reinforce the material. I learned a lot from this class and he made me more interested in the subject. Tests are mostly based on lectures and ungraded practice questions he post on BB. I would highly recommend.
I'm very surprised at how low his rating is. Show up to this class, takes notes, and you will get an A. He explains the material really clearly and will go over it multiple times until you get it. No textbook but his lectures go over everything you need to know for the exam. His exams are very straight forward. Definitely take him.
Based on 3 things: quiz (10% -easy), midterm (40%), and final (50%). Tests you on what he teaches in class. Although attendance isn't mandatory he doesn't use a textbook or ppt. Its all lecture based. So attend class, take good notes, do his exercise questions that he posts on blackboard, and you will pass. Highly recommend!
People who are rating him low either never show up or don't pay attention. If you simply listen in class (admittedly is very difficult), he is a very organized and great professor. Also, gives many exercise questions which help you prepare, but his own tests are a little different with each question having "none of the above"
He knows what he is talking about and likes to focus on the details. Grades are heavily based on final.
Whatever you do DONT take Barry Ma. He might seem like a nice guy but the midterm and final (55%) are your only grades and its solely based off of what he goes over in class. He writes on paper so you can't get the notes online. His exercise problems are similar to tests but not enough so that you can get through the problems easily. Hardest class
His grading is midterm and final(55%) with a term project that is easy with answers online. However, the exams god damn, you better pray and study before going into it. You have to take down notes and not only that listen to him(which is ALOT HARDER THAN YOU THINK). Do the exercises that he posts on blackboard like 5 times each before going in exam
Extremely volatile class. You may be excelling in your other courses and have well defined methods to prepare yourself for exams. You've practiced and ritualized these methods because doing so resulted in your success thus far, yet the level of minimal effort the Professor puts in himself can lead to a significant downturn for your own grades.
Me, my roomate and our mutual friend knew the material insideout, testing each other proved this. We were all 1 point away from each other on midterm. On finals day we ended up guessing a lot, my friends thought they had similar answers. I got an A and they both got C. Shows that you can gamble your way through courses like the one Barry Ma teaches
Overall he is a good choice compared to the other ECO4000 professors at Baruch. He repeats a lot in his lectures but I liked it because it really emphasized the important aspects of the course. Midterm, Final and small project were definitely reasonable.
I took him over the summer. His tests are difficult. He speaks monotone & with an accent. Do not miss a class because his tests relies heavily on his notes & he doesn't use the textbook. tests are a mixture of t/f multiple choice and hand written. Even for the t/f & multiple choice you need to explain how you got it. Wouldn't recommend!
Overall, all the eco4000 classes are difficult but this one isnt too bad. You need to go to class because his tests are based on only handwritten lecture notes. Final is 55%, midterm 40%, and a easy term project is 5%. The tests are difficult, however if you read the notes and pay attention you should be fine.
A very boring professor who repeats repeats repeats a lot. The quiz and exams are based off what he teaches in class, so if you don't attend his class, there is a high chance you'll miss something important on the exam.
Hes one of the easier professors for Eco 4000 because he teaches it differently than most professors. His exams are purely based off his notes & what he says in class so make sure you pay attention. Also, make sure you do the ungraded exercises he posts on BB since theyre kind of similar to his exams. 45% midterm, 55% final and 5% project.
Worst professor and class Ive ever had. Avoid this man
Some students will find this professor easy and get an A without even trying or even showing up to class, while others will get Cs with countless hours spent on studying and trying to understand what the hell he is trying to teach you. If youre the latter, you need to attend class, take goodnotes & LISTEN to what he says if you want to do well
This is the worst professor I ever took in my whole college career. His lectures are extremely repetitive and monotonous. He doesnt use any text book or slides. All the info comes out of his head which isnt any helpful. The tests are designed to trick the students. Most of the my classmates regretted taking his class. SKIP AT ALL COST.
If you wanna do well in his class you have to listen to what he says and the notes he writes during class (You will not be able to find his notes in blackboard). Personally, I studied from the book for the final test and it was not useful at all. Do not take unless you are good at taking lecture notes.
Such an easy class. All you have to do is go to class and listen to what he says. He's old school and has a thick accent, but he repeats the same thing over and over. If you can't listen to what he says and write down his notes, then don't take this class and whine about how difficult the professor is.
Bad class. Bad professor. Bad teaching structure. Bad grading system. Just... bad
Rubbish teaching style and a rubbish teaching professor.
If you asked me today what I learned in class I would say IDK. But his notes he post at the beginning of class are very good and very helpful for the quiz. If you print them out and start studying from day one and take good notes you will be fine. He reiterates what he is saying about 1,000 times and his practice quiz is super helpful
This class is basically if you could understand his thick accent or not. His tests are heavily on what he says in class. If you don't understand him then stay away from him. His test curve is only 5 points which he thinks its really generous.
Professor is very sincere. He wants you to understand and learn the concepts very thoroughly. He will repeat and basically spoonfeed you explanations on all the theories until it is ingrained in your head. Everything is based on his handwritten notes which he posts on BB. Lectures help you get the concepts, practice questions on BB helps for tests.
Very good lectures. I learned a lot. Professor goes through the main points many times. He is a tough grader. Even if you study hard you might end up with a C in this class so you have to take it seriously. There's 1 midterm & 1 final. You don't need a book. Read exercises & notes he posts on blackboard, pay attention to the wording and all details
lectures are a bit boring as he repeats things a lot but he repeats it to convey the concept and root of where things come from. Those are important for the test. His exams are based off his lectures/notes so study those. Class itself is a bit difficult but he is a kind prof and cracks jokes now and then
Very tricky questions on the test and they are super confusing. Tests are not supposed to be like that.
Just finished the final today and boy it was tricky and HARD. He has a heavy accent and very repetitive at giving lectures. His videos could've easily be finished in less than 30mins but since he reiterates so much they are mostly lengthy at over 1hr. Midterm counts for 40% and Final 60%, if you screw up on exams, then you are done.
Just don't take him. I did well in the class, but I have never taken a class with more confusing exam questions. You could know the material by heart (which I did), but the way he words questions is just unreasonable. Luckily he curves if people do bad, but still way too hard.
This class is just piece of trash, Horrible prof at Baruch, he uses his old assignment and tests from paste semester. He is worse and this class is even worser. NEVER RECOMMEND this class to anyone. I didn't even learn a single thing.
Horrible professor. I took this class for my minor and It's stressful. He made his own exams & his wording is extremely tricky. There is no way to get a good grade unless you only go to school. If you work, I will suggest taking it over the summer unless you don't have a choice. NO assignments, 3 exams & final weights 55% of the total grade.
Do yourself a favor and do not take him. You want a good grade in this course? Go somewhere else. Trust me. Grades are determined by very very Few factors: quiz, midterm, and final. You mess up on one and you can't make up for it. Smart dude and definitely knows what he's talking about but teaching is another thing.
He taught very carefully and methodically. He explained every knowledge point very well and was easy to understand. There is no homework. It is easy to get an A as long as you listen to his video carefully. No attendance, he is super super nice and friendly. I really learn a lot. Exam is easy as long as u understand his lecture and note.
Took an asynchronous class and started live classes and wouldn't change the schedule even though students had other course conflicts. Not prompt with email replies. His lectures consist of him reading his notes (not very good either) and his practice questions have nothing to do with exams. Entire course is off of exams, no hw or participation.
Expect a stressful semester when you take Ma. Very thick accent. Everything is weirdly worded so its hard to know what he wants. You basically need to ignore his class and just read the textbook. His organization on blackboard is horrendous. He does curve tho.
The downside: Midterm 40% & Final 60%, Accent, Speakes really slow. The upside: No textbook, All questions on exams are from his notes, study his notes and you'll be fine. (I never attended his lectures but instead waited till he posted the recordings, download it, and played it at 1.5x speed.) If you like to rely on Chegg, YOU WILL FAIL.
Exams are all straight from his notes; He is an ez grader. He made a curve for each test. Quiz(10%) curve 1 raw point of 20. Midterm(35%) curves 3 raw points of 22. After final(55%) he curves 7 points to letter grade. 36% of students got A- or A;64% of all students have a grade of 'B -' or higher. No excuse to fail in this course.
ECO4000 is a mad easy course and he is generous. He did curve for quiz and midterm(add up like 15-20%). In the end, he did a huge curve to a letter grade again(add up to 20 pts to your letter grade!! crazy!!). Dude had a final exam score of 10/22 but got A. 36% ppl getting A and 80+% passing with C or higher
this professor apparently invents his own macro. he does not follow a textbook, so all of his exams come from the notes he makes. he makes his own exams, so you can only rely on his notes, but even using his notes only you can fail an exam. he’s very unclear on what he wants.
RUINED MY GPA! grades are only based off exams, with the final being weighted 55%. however, the exams are literally impossible to ace because he makes questions based off HIS OWN economic theories, meaning that it is impossible to know what he wants you do. gave study guides that did not resemble exams at all, and answers could not be found online.
This professor is not as bad as people are making him seem to be. I appreciated how helpful and caring he was in answering questions. You have to pay a lot of attention, maybe that's the challenging part. But I guarantee that if you do, you will easily pass.
Barry Ma, is not a bad professor. He takes his time with going over the lecture and information. It's not difficult to follow. However, this Test are tricky and the practice problems aren't aligned with the test questions as he makes up his own exams. There are only three exams 10%, 35% and 55%. Overall, I enjoyed his class and he's funny as well.
Throw away everything you know about economics before entering his class because he creates his own theories and formulas. If you dare try to use you past economics knowledge, you're done. Only memorize what he teaches. You may even get an A if you have the ability to just focus on his newly created formulas and not try to use your brain.
Lectures were not the most interesting. He grades on only three exams. Slight curves are given and the exams were open notes, but studying is required. I did learn a lot about economics in this class and it allowed me to analyze macroeconomics in an applicable way that I used for my other courses.
Don't take. Only 3 graded coursework and his exams are tricky because his wording is confusing sometimes. No extra credit. He curves slightly and everyone ended up passing but he's extremely boring and I don't think I learned anything because it was difficult to understand him. Professor has a thick accent.
The grading system for this professor is insane with a final worth 60% of the grade. So you get what you get and can't even drop this class in advance. Also, he has a heavy accent.
He has tenure and is no longer capable of holding lectures coherently. No energy and sits and reads off slides behind a desk. Horrible lecture, no homework, no textbok, 2 hr classes with grades based on 3 tests only.
Worst professor I've ever had! No amount of kindness would make me accept him. No homework, no quizzes. Just three exams to take, the Final and Mid-Term having the most affect on your grade. Also, his lectures are him just reading off slides you can read yourself, so unless you're efficient at studying alone, don't take the risk. Not worth it.
The professor's lectures can be dry, but he covers the material thoroughly. The exams are tricky, so staying on top of the content and using study aids like Unstuck study are crucial. Overall, it's a challenging but manageable class if you put in the work.
Not going to discredit the guy, obviously a smart man that is well versed in the subject. However, the class truly is pointless. Lecture is hard to follow and largely redundant. If you can self-study, you can easily get an A in the class. 30% Midterm 20% Quiz 50% Final
There's no homework or textbook for this class, just his handwritten notes which are in broken English. He has a heavy accent and just reads off his notes in lectures which aren't engaging whatsoever. Final is worth 60% of the grade. Take someone else.
His lectures are in broken English so I can't really understand. The lecture slides are just bits and pieces out of the textbook and he's just reading off the slides mostly. Attendance is mandatory. The quizzes and tests are very tricky! A lot of the problems he is asking on the tests aren't on the practice questions/ exams that he is giving out...
Run away. Terrible class. Just spewing information from the slides and just goes on massive tangents. Class is strictly him talking into the abyss. Feels like a dictatorship class. Complete waste of time.
He truly cares about his students understanding his work. There is no textbook so you have to pay attention. He goes slow which may seem like a bore, but the concepts can get challenging so it's great for his speed. No homework, graded on a term project that's straightforward if you pay attention. I would for sure take him again.
Grades on 3 things a quiz, midterm and final exam. Lectures are boring and hard to understand. DOES NOT TEACH what's on the exam, have a complete different review and completely different final so he can bring the average down. Actual first HORRIBLE professor I've had, does not care about students.
Lectures are useless, extremely hard to understand topics and concepts unless you practice on your own. Finals 60% so if you mess up on that you'll get a bad grade he's a sweet guy the class is boring and hard to understand if you pass just be happy and keep going ! Class is graded by 2 things no fillers to improve your grade.
hes awful and ruined my gpa
Heavy chinese accent. He is old, speaks slow and he struggles to get his point across in a simple and effective manner. I would describe his lectures as incoherent. Coming from a strong test taker, his exams are tricky. Many questions focus on smaller details, that you'd need to memorize to a T, as opposed to being conceptual.
Barry is a nice person. His teaching is something that will get you stressed as MT & FE approaches. He has a heavy accent which makes it difficult to follow. With his recordings it does help a bit to replay it. Nevertheless I would take him if you can do your own studying. Its difficult enough already.
Barry ma is a 3 ball specialist, in the clutch he finishes. Even got my boys saying his name a generational talent. Can be difficult but a life changing experience.
Is very difficult to understand him, has trouble preparing you for the exams. The practice tests are nothing like the actual exams. Would not recommend.
