Very critical or marching, but doesn't get personal. Just wants it to be good!
If you're a good player, a good marcher, and you work hard, you're fine.
Very Demanding. Not sensitive to students' feelings. Not always professional.
very respectable for his knowledge of music and his aspirations.
Doesn't pay attention to new students. Has his own clique of upperclassmen.
He knows what he's doing, but he plays favorites. It's also hard to impress him
Knows his stuff. Hard to deal with if you don't know his style. Plays favorites
Plays favorites!!! Otherwise OK once you are used to him.
I LIKE BARRY!!! he works hard & expects students to. done wonders with band.
Barry is not as bad as people make him to be. Very knowledgable of music!
A good teacher...Just expects 100% all the time for perfect music and drill.
NEVER TAKE THIS PROF. UNLESS YOU ARE A MUSIC MAJOR
Busted my arse 3 years for this guy- NOT ONE "nice job." Loves Brown-Nosers.
too critical & plays favorites-used to love band
Has no respect for students. If you are good but can't teach than stop
He is NOT a nice guy. Loves music majors. If not one(me) watch out. Plays favs.
grades easy but demands hard work. he is excellent, just misunderstood.
Knows what he wants...Self-Success..Conceded&Selfish.Not a teacher,a technician!
Cares nothing about students only about his stature.
Knows his music, made me not want to go to a class that I once loved.
Needs people skills. Also, music played in concert band is same old garbage.
Strict, but knows what he wants. If ya can't take the heat, get out of the band

People with lack of discipline and love for music should NOT be in these groups.
Had him for 4 yr. He has good intentions but he is MEAN to slackers. BEWARE!!!
Give 100% or get out. Slackers pull the rest of us down!
Expected to hate him, but I like him. He's clear and fair, just a little harsh.
martin has alot of work he does for classes, give him a break
Not very social, but he does know his music to a tee. Very smart.
never smiles, doesn't seem espec. friendly but he's a good enough teacher

don't be a teacher if you hate people as much as this guy.
Good guy, I don't think he's nearly as unpersonable as other people say.
you need to perform at 100% all the time in order to succeed. You must work
No Comments
Preys upon the unaware. HAHAHAHAHA. Knows his stuff, though.
Personal relationships depend on student.. compliments hidden-know where to look
not a blow off, no sympathy for a tardy or for being absent...a mean man forreal
No Comments
he encourages hard work and responds to hard workers.
This man is dedicated... he dislocated his knee- didn't miss one rehersal
Seems hard to please, wants 110% all the time, NOT a slack off class, must work!
very strict, high expectations, let's you out late, but hates tardiness
bad class, boring, yells at students who don't know how to play something
Excellent Conductor/Teacher, horrible people skills
Nothing wrong with discipline or the way he works, give him a break!
Very old school, but his way is the best way.....right?
His walking pace is to the tempo Stars and Stripes . Strict, rarely smiles!
runs a tight ship, very passionate, can be mean, controlling
Yeah, he knows his stuff but, he has NO emotion!
Take this if you don't want to make music, just noise in tempo, tick,tick.......
Expects your best and gives you the same. He's tough, but good at what he does.

Hard, controling, but much better than the past years :)
Doesn't complement much, but he knows his stuff...
expects perfection, but in performance you will want it of yourself too.
He is hard, but if you work your ass off, he will like you... simple as that. He is a great prof and won't accept anything, but the best.
He expects you best, not a slack off class.
hypocrite!! yeah, yeah he is...expects you to be on time but makes you late to your next one when he holds you over for his class. He hates clarinets...and i do not appreciate that. I guess he's a good director, sometimes.
Show up and you get an A, but dont expect to feel appreciated. And expect to march in the worst conditions you can fathom.
Martin's a tough teacher who expects nothing but the best...just as he should. Knows his stuff, but i wish he would have more fun with the music rather that worrying about the stuff that we should be cleaning ourselves anyways!
Professor Martin is the BEST professor I've ever had! He makes me work harder and expects more than any other professor, and I respect him for that. His dedication to the music program is apparent and he's a great guy once you get to know him!!
Absolute great guy off the marching field, on the field is a little different. Knows his stuff and expects your best...no excuses. Definately not a slack of class, you're there b/c you want to be.
Good teacher, demands a lot from ALL students...not a class to slack off in. Can come off as an ass sometimes, but for the most part, is tolerable.
Prof. Martin expects your best and nothing more. He's fun outside of class and all toughness in class. I think that makes a great teach.
sometimes nice, sometimes not

Prof. Martin demands the finest and brings out the best in most musicians, but has a problem with playing favorites. Professors should not belong to student cliques. Period.
Is very strict on the field but is generally a good guy most of the time. When in class, it's all business. Demands a lot of your time so don't take if you don't want to give up your Saturdays.
Good professor most of the time. Some times he is not good.
It's not so much the teacher as the class, some people blame him for not liking it, I blame them. Some people are just not cut out for the work load.
I loved Martin! Wanted to challenge me as a musician, had faith in me, and made band interesting, more than just playing music. Although you sometimes play the same stuff each year, I liked the music choices.
Martin is a great prof. He is very demanding but he only wants the best from everyone all the time. Some people are just too sensitive and can't handle criticism. You just have to let what he says to you roll off your back.
Reminds me of a director that I had in high school.
yells a TON at people and rarely complements. Martin has managed to alienate ALL the freshmen and doesn't seem to treat upperclassmen much better...
The marching band could be twice as big as it is if he didn't make people loose interest in something that's supposed to be fun. There are better ways to get things done than to scream someone into doing it. It's not about not being able to handle it, it's about what's necessary.
First time I've not liked marching ( I've been in a lot). Thinks HIS class is more important than academics. Is not good leader. Plays favorites. Bad teaching tactics (screaming). Picks on people. Intolerant. Won't help. Won't listen. Makes it obvious when he doesn't like someone. Don't take him.
I don't mind the work, but I dislike being forced to do something that I would rather not do. He's extremely ill-tempered and he yells all the time. Very unhelpful, but clear on what HE wants. He doesn't bother asking any students what they want. Get far away...
Professor Martin is an arrogant, rude, power-hungry man. If it weren't for the love I have for my instrument,I would never be in an ensemble of his again. He has all but taken the joy out of band for me, and for numerous others as well. Sad that GV is hurting the music program by keeping him around.
Music majors beware: Martin will pressure you into doing what HE wants at all costs. Ex: threatening to ruin people's futures at GV to get them to do pep band, which is an OPTIONAL activity. Shame on you, Professor. Being a poor instructor is one thing; being a malicious person is quite another.
yells at people constantly for even the smallest of mistakes. Makes people hate what they are doing, even if its something theyve loved before. However, if i ever needed someone to make me feel like a complete idiot, i would go to him!
He can be a very angry unforgiving man. But if you get on his good side he'll help you out when you need it. Be prepared to work your butt off.
Marching abdn wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I wasn't thrilled with it at all. I made some good friends and that's about it. Didn't care for him as a director. Too picky about stupid things. Gets in your face when we are even on the field. Didn't like that at all!!!
Marching Band Techniques is a great class. Prof. Martin is harsh but fair. If you're in college to learn, you will learn much from him. If you're there for an easy grade, don't bother. But he knows what he expects and he is very consistent. Great prof, in my opinion.
Barry is very easy to get along with as long as people would talk to him. He only yells at students when they do things wrong time after time. I was and still am interested in Marching Band. He is the reason why I am going to do it again next year as well as concert band this year. GO MARTIN!!
Short for "Richard". a jerk of epic preportions. Needs to find a new carreer, maybe as a rodeo clown or a speed bump. Picks his nose alot.
Professor Martin is great for Marching Band, Military Marching Band, and a bad High School band. I know personally about a hundred people that would want his job as the Symphonic Wind Ensemble director and that would actually make the band sound OK. He is the reason for great music is dieing.
he is horrible, the worst music teacher i have ever encountered. and ive encountered alot. He would be a good business man, he belongs there. NOT music, doesnt really give a rip about the students. someone else said he only yells at people for mistakes they constantly make. NOT TRUE!!!
Come on, he's not that bad. Just practice your music outside of class and you'll be fine. He's tough but he gets good results. He's nice outside of class, too.
MB is lots of fun dispite martin. yes he can be a jerk but come on people get over it, its not the end of the world if he hurts your feelings. the one really bad thing is that if u anrt really good at music then u have no value to him and u are dispensable.
Words do not describe the amount of negative feelings I have toward this monster of a human being. Definitely one of the main reasons I can't stand the music department at GVSU.

He is a great conductor. He has a bad rap for being "mean", but if students actually talk to him they'll see a different side to Martin. I have never been ill-treated in his class - embarassed mildly (but that's because I didn't practice enough and got caught). He gets results. His band(s) are great! He's a good prof.
Not gonna lie, I hate him. I think my favorite part of class is how he blames the drumline for his inablility to count at a consistant tempo. Also, I love how he always shows up to rehearsal late after writing his shameful attemps at drill. It is seriously the worst drill ever. I'm suprised how many people are in the marching band in spite of him.

hes an okay person, and he seems to be pretty cool this year. he just seems like the kind of person who wants things done the right way. ive encountered worse directors before.
I think he is an awesome music teacher. He knows what he wants the band to sound like and he does not settle for just O.K. He wants to make the students better and the only real way to do that is to sometimes be mean. He gets the job done so I can respect that.
martin is a nutcase...
Martin knows what he wants and gets things done. However, he can be unfairly impatient and I feel he can be quick to judge. He's not inept by any means, but he has a quick temper and can be hard to get along with. He has a habit of calling you out for minor mistakes in front of people. He is the main reason I'm not returning to marching band.
I must say...kudos to Martin. Granted he is still an ass...he has improved sooooooooo much compared to last year. He's a nice person...when it doesn't come to band stuff. But if he wants something, he will blackmail you to get it. I'm just glad I'm not a music major....whew
I love, love, LOVE marching band because of the people you meet and the stuff we do, but I cannot stand Prof. Martin. He is a jerk and will completely embarrass you in front of the entire ensemble if the mood strikes him right. He has little to no tact and it seems like he will pick a few people out from the class and constantly yell at them.
ugh. so disrepectful...he thinks he's like the best thing in the world. very condesending. i'm definitely not a fan.
Biggest jerk I've ever been around! Definitely not the man I want as a role model to be a future music educator! I've learned everything NOT to do with my ensemble or students from this man. I don't understand how they hire people in that stupid music department. Avoid Prof. Martin as much as possible!!
Mr. Martin is not a nice person- he does not try to understand others, and absolutely everything is his way or no way. He needs to have complete control over everything or he throws a fit. He is not a personable person- everything is business, and he gives off a very negative, angry energy. As a conductor, there is no music coming out of this man.
Claims to have all this authority and power but will never help you after you are out. If you think you'll get a letter of recommendation forget it. That is his big leverage then he doesn't come through. I'm the 4th person I know of that he has demanded my time or threatened to give me a bad rap. I came through and he refused to comply.
Loves to be in control. Will go out of his way to get things done EXACTLY the way he wants them, even if it means smashing his students into the ground.
When it comes down to it, Martin is a jerk. I would do anything to avoid being in either of his bands. He likes to yell at you while you're trying to play and never appreciates the effort that you DO put in, especially if you aren't a music major.
I hate him and always will. He knows his stuff, but does NOT know how to get it through his students. He likes to make you feel inferior and like crap. I suggest you not take marching band, you will end of hating it.
Kinda crazy, but he cares about perfection.
Not a very personable guy. He's tolerable, for me, but he's not one of my favorite people. Don't expect him to be your friend. Also, he's very negative in his teaching style, to say the least. Good luck, and don't let Prof. Martin sway you from doing marching band! We still have Prof. York, yeah!
Smart guy! but strange behavior. He intimmidates people and mostly he isn´t clear with his indications, you just understand you aren't playing good enough for him. For sure you will get As but you have to learn how to tolerate his personality.
He seems angry nearly all the time, to the extent that when he's not mad it's almost unsettling. He yells unnecessarily a lot. He seems alright when he's not angry though.
If you think he's bad now, you should've been in his band when he first got here, like me. He has his clique of favorites. He works hard and expects the same out of his musicians. I asked for a letter of recommendation and I got a good one from him. Barry is a decent guy, you just have to know how to deal with him and put up with him.
He thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread. Knows what he's doing but is kind of a jerk.
I think he's an amazing teacher. He definetely knows what he doing. Don't let his straight forward remarks turn you away. He cares more than you think.
Very stern, he knows what he's talking about. One of the elite band directors in the country. If you are interested in actually growing as a musician, there isn't a better man alive to guide you along the way.
This man is not a teacher and is not even a musician. He has no feel for music. Or for people as far as that goes. He likes notes, not music, and should have been a chartered accountant. I have heard that he was hired by the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band. No idea what they were thinking but apparently they are losing members left and right.
Barry comes off as a jerk but he is one of the best in the nation, and I'm not the only one who thinks that. He has just recently become a member of the ABA. He may come off pretty harsh but he cares a lot about improving you as a musician and just wants you to work hard.
Martin comes off as angry and unreasonable, but he's really just super devoted to his classes. He pushes himself even harder than his students. He has, and continues to work hard and just gets annoyed when other people don't take marching band, swe, or conducting seriously. If you respect him and the subjects he teaches, he will respect you.
You'll learn absolutely precise focus, rhythm and tempo at the expense of any kind of musicality or enjoyment of music. Apart from that, he's tyrannical and behaves far from professionally. He insults his musicians personally in front of each other during rehearsal. If you take a scholarship, you sell your soul to Barry Martin. You WILL be in SWE.
He's very hard and tolerates little to no mistakes but the sound of his groups speak for themselves
Very very tough as a teacher, but it's only because he pushes you to do well. You're kind of afraid of failing, so you don't. However, outside of class he is actually a nice guy. Scary, but he does his job well.
Very intense, no-nonsense type of professor. I was scared of him for the first month of class. That said, he is unquestionably one of the best directors I have ever seen. The music you hear at a Barry Martin-conducted concert is off the charts. Don't expect to skate, but expect to improve in leaps and bounds.
Clearly has a strong passion for music but does not know how to criticize appropriately. Very rude if you do something wrong and even makes people cry. He really needs to lean how to be nice. It's one thing to have constructive criticism but it's another to be a complete jerk.
One of the best professors at Grand Valley. He's not easy, but he is one of the very best conductors out there. If you come to rehearsal prepared, you will be fine. He can be harsh, but the people who get called out in rehearsal usually deserve it!
Prof Martin is tough, yes. He expects that you practice outside of rehearsals, that you come prepared and hold yourself and section to a high standard. Coming from a HS where all these things were 2nd nature, I loved sitting under his baton and being on Band Staff. He is a gr8 guy and loves music. See past his harshness and you'll find that, too.
Prof. Martin is fantastic. You get used to his personality but it's worth enduring to be in his class. He pushes you and has made me a much better musician. The time spent in his class has been priceless.
If he's your first professor, don't let him scare you. Many students say they don't like him because they take his criticism way to seriously. He's only looking for 100%, and if you're slacking off he'll call you out on it. Outside of rehearsal he's a lot of fun but be responsible for your work and know your part. Don't make excuses.
Barry Martin is one of the best professors I've had at GV. He pushed students to do their best in both SWE and conducting, and got results. He was tough, but clear and helpful. If you did your work and were prepared, there was never an issue. He is a great musician and teacher, and I wish him well in whatever is next for him.
Way back in 2000 when I was a music major, I took Marching Band and SWE with Prof. Martin. Yes, he's strict, expects you to come prepared and may yell at you if you're not, but come on. There is so much more to him than you get in one class period. Prof Martin is well-read, very knowledgable concerning music and will always produce greatness.
You must have a musical background to take this class. He expects you to memorize all material every week. Exams are a major part of your grade. The professor is rude and mean. He doesn't help you and talks to you like you are stupid when you ask questions. Only has 1 hour a week of walk-in office hours otherwise you have to make an appointment.
He expects you to know everything about all the music you listen to. If you don't sit in your room and listen to the listenings repeatedly, you will struggle. He is very rude, and not very helpful. He also reads straight out of the book but still expects you to come to class, and if you miss more than two classes he will mark you down.
Having a strong musical history helps a ton, if you know nothing of music find someone in class that does, he is not helpful to those who do not understand music, saw lots of people struggling while the few of us with more musical knowledge had a much easier time and answered most in class questions.
This has been one of the most difficult core classes I have ever taken at GV. It is a class for non-music majors, but if you don't have a substantial musical background you will have to work hard. He is text book heavy and does not give instruction well. Feed back was never positive and he can be rude. Don't expect additional help. Beware.
The "Not my tempo" scene from Whiplash, is a good example of what it feels like to be in his class. He is very intimidating and does not give helpful feedback. He may be a musical "genius," but should definitely not be teaching an entry level music class. Ended up being my hardest class all semester. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
I took this for a general education art credit. Mistake. It was fast paced so I went to Prof for help and he told me to "try harder." He's grouchy, has high expectations, and DOESN'T USE BLACKBOARD, so you have to ask him what your grade is. He gets irritated when nobody volunteers, then calls on people who he knows don't know the answer.
He does not use blackboard at all and only post your midterm and final grade. You don't know what grade you have until the end of the course. This class is supposed to be for non-music majors but is incredibly difficult. Participation is very important in this course. He will call you out for your mistakes in front of everyone in class.
This class was a gen ed class but he taught it as if it were a major class senior year
This was the worst class I have ever taken. And I am a nursing major. I took this for an art credit, and I would not recommend this class to anyone who isn't already a music expert. The course title is very misleading. The tests are completely open response, and there are far too many questions to answer in a short time. Turn back now.
If you don't have extensive knowledge of music and how it works before taking this class, don't take it with him. The only reason I got through this class was because I had choir for 6 years with a really tough director. He's not the nicest guy and you have to participate at least every class. You need to work hard.
Professor Martin was helpful at times, but this was a very hard class for an entry level. I had been in band for 7 years and thought this would be a breeze. I was SO wrong. We had to write down the patterns he played on the piano and that was hard, we had to memorize major and minor scales (all), etc. One of the hardest classes Ive ever had.
*raises hand Professor Martin, what page are we on? Does anyone else not know what page we are on? No? *continues on with lecture without telling me what page we are on. This class was the worst class of my undergrad. Class attendance is a requirement and he is very rude and not helpful when you are having troubles understanding material
He seems nice but takes music too seriously. Acts like all his students should be trained professionals. Doesnt slow down and isnt very clear. If you play an instrument you should be fine but if you dont know anything about music, stay away.
my review is a bit biased because music comes easier to me than most people, but professor martin was still great. straight to what you need to know, no bs or time wasted in class which i appreciate. hes pretty serious but not a bad professor at all.
Walked in one second late to class and he said he needed to see me after. After class he was extremely rude to me about it. Even though attendance isn't supposed to be mandatory this year becuase of covid, he said "technically attendance isn't mandatory, but you can't pass without participation in class". so basically made it mandatory anyway.
Looked through this app to find the best music teacher and of course last minute GVSU swtiched the professor to this guy. PICK A DIFF PROF. For a gen ed class, this guy took everything way too seriously and made it harder than it had to be for no reason at all. He was rude and when he lectured, he would go so fast and wouldn't explain things well
I did not like Professor Martin at all. He says you do not need musical experience, but you most definitely do. If you miss any classes or aren't paying attention 100% of the time, you will fall behind in the class really quickly. When we moved online, he was terrible. The videos were barely legible. He also only calls you to answer questions.
I stand by the fact that Music 129 was the hardest class I've taken thus far. Professor Martin made is so much harder than it had to be and the man is a hard-ass about EVERYTHING. I thought I would've done fine, and I should've been, since I've done band for 10 years. Pick a different prof unless you want to devote your entire semester to a gen ed.
took this class for an art credit and dropped it halfway through the semester as this class was hard (even if you have had music history) and the prof just expects you to understand everything right away.
I took MUS 100 for my art credit thinking it wouldn't be too difficult as I had lots of music experience--I was wrong. He lectures very quickly from the minute class starts until the very end and doesn't stop for questions. Tests are okay but you need to know lots of material, which he barely teaches. Wouldn't recommend him
Prof. Martin cares about his work to a point it really feels excessive, especially for a 100-level course. It feels assumed that you have extensive musical experience coming into the course (I came in with years of Violin experience from HS and still struggled) glancing over hard topics. It makes learning the 'basics' feel like a 300-level course.
At the beginning of this class prof said you didn't need any musical experience or knowledge to pass. I personally have 7+ years of musical experience and I had to work hard for my grade. The one saving grace for this class is that prof teaches 97% of the material on the tests, but the lectures move quickly.
This class is just misleading, I wouldn't take it if you do not have any music experience. I have 11 years of music. It is titled "fundamentals of music" but is a music theory class, which I think are completely different. So first, the title needs to change. Second, he is very picky with how you write music so make sure you learn how he likes it.
He was such a fun professor. He wasn't as fun in class but outside of class he was great to talk to and worked with you if you needed anything. The lectures are mainly just review what's in the book but really pay attention when doing the listenings. The tests are hard but they are manageable.
Hard and not helpful
Prof. Martin teaches like a high school teacher. He focuses more on following unnecessary rules than teaching. Rules include non to few restroom breaks per class, marking students tardy for showing up even a minute late, grading on absences, and leaving early regardless of the reason. While his lectures are okay, his attitude makes him intolerable.
Prof Martin is passionate in what he teaches but he treats his class like they're middle schoolers in terms of knowledge about music. He demands we be on time and respect his time but he isn't prepared for class when it starts and is late when coming back from break. He drones on and makes the class uninteresting and makes you dislike the content.
This class was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Attendance was mandatory and he would mark you if you came in a minute late. Tests were extremely hard, and no one ever did well on them in my class. He teaches us as if we are musical prodigies, not people taking the class for a gen-ed. I wouldn't even make my worst enemy take this class.
Prof. Martin has tarnished my enjoyment of music. Before taking his class, I really wanted to keep doing stuff with music through college, but he killed a lot of the fun in it for me. He's a very harsh and rude professor, and the way he teaches his class and the way he grades reflects that. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!!
used up every single second of class time and gave a lot of homework, the class also just was not interesting
I went into MUS 129 thinking it would be an easy gen ed due to my 10 years of music experience. However, I quickly learned that this class did not match the course description and was harder than it needed to be.
He definitely treats this lower level class way more seriously than need be. I wouldn't have passed if I hadn't already had a background in music. I tutored students in this class to help them get their grades from a D to a B. Very harsh grading, but he really knows this subject back and forth. Super organized and clear. He's just not very personal
Do not take without some music experience. I did band before, got over 100% on every test in this class and the homework took an hour or less each week. I had no problem creating the short piece of music either, he loved mine (I spent 10 minutes on it). Only thing I disliked was 'show up or fail' since the class was so easy and boring.
I don't look forward to this class for the following reasons: 1. He is a very tough grader, especially when doing assignments on staff paper. Every little thing counts! 2. I feel that this class does not fit the description. 3. With the amount of experience I had in music this class was not helpful. Do not take if you don't have to.... PLEASE
I read all of these rating before starting this class. I have had several years of prior music experience, but I learned a LOT more once joining this class. He is not the most personable, but he's really not a bad guy. I went to tutoring for the class and received 100% on almost everything. Not as bad of a class if you try.
During a quiz, one of my classmates got a phone call for a family emergency. This student quietly packed up and approached Dr. Martin to explain the situation and asked to be excused. Dr. Martin responded to them with, "You know that's going to cost you attendance points right?" One of the most unforgiving professors I've ever had.
I took HL IB music theory and could barely keep up. Ridiculous for an intro level course to get an easy A for my art credit. Tests are hard, participation & attendance are worth grade. He liked me bc I knew what I was talking about w/ my history in music theory, but he was real mean and rude to everyone. Lots of people dropped the class
This class is no easy A, even with music background. The professor is tough but fair - stay on top of attendance and assignments, utilize resources like unstuck AI, and you'll come out ahead.
Prof. Martin makes such a simple class so difficult. On top of his snarky remarks and attitude, his attendance is mandatory and if you miss three classes it brings your grade down extremely, and his grading is very harsh. Not very helpful for preparation of tests or quizzes, and doesn't make you feel comfortable enough to ask questions.
The professor informed me I was not able to miss anymore more days of class due to the fact that I had not been there for days previous even though I was not yet enrolled in the course as I had just changed my schedule. He used me as a class example repeatedly of what not to do even though I had no prior knowledge of the content.
do NOT take this class as an elective if you aren't planning to pursue anything music related. I thought it would be easy but its SO hard & I've done chorus and band so that says something.. he goes through too much info too quickly to understand anything. He is a perfectionist when it comes to grading!! And he is rude when you don't get something.
If your marks do not meet his standards to the very microscopic particle, you will lose points. If you don't understand something or answer a question incorrectly, you will be made to feel stupid. You also cannot miss a single class without falling significantly behind. The homework isn't terribly difficult as long as you are paying attention.
