Waste of english, class had no point.
Interesting person, but not always clear on what he wants us to do. (Judgement possibly clouded because this was a summer night course.)
Class was interesting, book was intriguing. He also let us out early every class!
Daily EASY quizzes on reading, midterm paper and final paper. pretty easy class, i recommend him. he does a lot of background research on the reading to help him teach it. class discussions on discussion questions he makes up.
he is a great and understanding professor
All he did was ramble about politics, and tell us how bad America is. If this is how you learn about other countries, I'm an expert. Waste of what could have been a good class
This was my second undergrad course with him. I can't wait to take him at the graduate level. Very cool guy (of course, I also agree with his politics, so I may be biased). Way smart. Fair grader.
One of the best professors I've had. If you get the chance to take any of his courses, do it!
You have to be kidding me! digressive ramblings, and philisophical tangents that will be of no use to you in the real world. Not interested in open interpretation of any theories he holds to be sacred.
You've got to be kidding me. Take this class only if you're a tortured artist longing to escape from all logical order. That, or you just adore ambiguity and really long lectures on the self.
An absolute cakewalk of a professor. He's very nice, an interesting lecturer, easy grader, but you really learn very, very little. You should expect more of a professor at a major University.
Interesting teacher, good materials.
Great!
Profound!
Really enjoyed the class.
great teacher. really easy class and he makes it fairly fun. if you ever have trouble he's willing to help you out. if you have the chance, take one of his classes.
I am going to take a class with him again. Well worth your time.
I don't know what the heck an "objective class" is, nor would I ever want to take one. Teachers should have an agenda and Dr. Mauer definitely has one -- for students to learn to think for themselves. He is the best teacher I had at UCF.
I took this class during the summer, and it was really easy. There's a lot of writing, but none of it is in class, and the quizes and final are really easy (T/F). He's SUPER helpful, and he tells you exactly what he wants for the essays. TAKE THIS CLASS! Oh, and he's cute, too.
Quiz's almost every class, so at least skim work and ull do fine, grades fairly easy on essays. hes a nice guy but class can become pretty dull, take him for the easy A or B
Definately one of the most unique professors at UCF. A great teacher- You'll learn a lot from the discussions. However, the subject matter is a little over most people's heads, so watch out and do the reading!
Dr. Mauer's class was my best experience this past semester. It was so encouraging to be in a class where the professor was obviously passionate about his subject. Quizzes are very basic, but common, and attendance is important because of it. Regardless, I was never tempted to miss a class. Hope to have an oppertunity to take a course of his again.
A lot of reading, and a quiz everyday in class. Quizzes are farely easy and can be answered easily if you do the readings. Discusses everything that you could possibly have questions about, and is there to help you understand and pass. Great guy, intelligent and helpful. TAKE HIM!
Wonderful teacher! Quiz nearly everyday, but they are super easy, especially if you've done the readings (which are never very much). A couple of essays, which do require research - but come on, this is college. Great guy, great class. I reccomend him highly!
He gives a quiz every day, and if you have more than 20 quizzes in the semester, he counts the extra ones as extra credit. It really boosts your grade. He is very helpful, and gives great feedback on papers. GREAT teacher. Loved the class.
Awesome guy! Professor Mauer is really helpful with paper writing and all kinds of advice. Unique professor- you do learn a lot from lecture. I am not in the class anymore and I STILL use stuff on his web page as a guide for my paper writing!
Prof. Mauer is a good guy. He's understanding and amenable. His lectures didn't always contain the amount of clarity and structure I enjoy, but he did his best to keep on a schedule and cover all material. One class session he let heated debate get out of hand about feminism, which made me want to poke my eyeballs out, though.
Insightful teacher. Inspirational. Easy grader though.
He's a really good professor! I learned a lot in his class and I am hoping to take him again in the future! He gives good feedback on your work and challenges your way of thinking. I recommend him to any student! His material is very diverse and covers many interesting topics. Take him!
Great guy... very soft-spoken but also very well-read. Has tons of great ideas and keeps lectures fairly interesting and engaging. You have a lot of quizzes and discussions throughout the semester so keeping up with the readings is CRUCIAL. Highly recommended.
Lectures were misdirected. It seemed like we only needed to show up on days that assignments were due, because writing them involved nothing from the lectures. I had him for a honors class and it was pretty laid back. Only had to write 2 essays, so it wasn't all that bad. Would reccommend if you like english class.
amazing! really really laid back. lets you out early and you get one day off. i took this class over summer, and i never felt overwhelmed or stressed out. the "schedule" gives you all the assignments, so if you like to work ahead of time, it's great! Take his class if possible, esp. for summer.
Professor Mauer is def. the teacher to have. He cares so much about his students and you can tell he really loves English. He makes the class really interesting and worth going to. I took this class for summer and it was great. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A CHILL PROFESSOR! also, he's soooo cute; that's always a big plus lol.
Prof Mauer is the best point blank. He is so chill and really takes intrest to what he is teaching. Easy grader, and usually let us out early.Final all true and falso. He is really nice, take this class if u want an easy A or B.
loved him! very chill guy, and really interested in what he is teaching. writing assignments pretty straight forward.
I had Barry for Honors ENC1102 and he was one of the best English prof's I've ever had. He is so laid back in his demeanor and teaching methods. He runs class with such ease it didn't even seem like school. There are simple easy readings and quizzes every day, 2 long papers and 2 short papers, and thats it. Got an A and enjoyed every moment w/ Barr
I am SO bad at english and this class was so easy. Go to him for help on your papers because there are 4 papers worth most of your grade and having him help gave me a 92 or higher on all of them -- even though I'm not a great writer. The quizzes everyday aren't bad since you get to use your notes. The discussions are boring though, but overall easy
Take him if possible! I learned more from his class than probably any other class I've taken. He isn't out to give you a bad grade, very helpful, clear in what he expects on papers, there is a lot of info. but he explains theories well. Really nice guy who wants you to actually learn. Not a super easy A but it's definitely more than attainable.
DEFF TAKE HIS CLASS! It's really interesting and also really easy. Daily quizzes are easy if you read the HW. Written assignments are easier and more interesting than other professors. I had to withdraw from my first ENC1102 class, but I never had problems with his class and have an A!
Barry is a good professor. At times, can be a little boring but he's cool and funny. There are daily quizzes so reading the material is mandatory. The essays are sort of difficult because he can be a tough grader at times. But he offers loads of extra credit, periodically lets you know your grade and if you do the reading, you should get a B.
Mauer does his best to try and wet the dry theory material. Class is mandatory or your grade will be reduced. Also, he does several one page papers and a couple of 5-pagers. Grading is fair and he actually provides some grammar things to help when writing papers. If you follow that sheet and have a good thesis, you'll get an A. You work for it
Not easy.
Awesome professor! Knows the material like the back of his hand. Daily quizzes are easy. Papers are a bit hard, but he's there to help. Makes the material extremely interesting.
Extremely helpful and easy. Take it!!!
took him for honors english 2. had small quizzes on short readings from the book every time we met, but they were pretty easy and he gave so many that some ended up as extra credit. great professor for english! papers were short too
Definitely get the books because you'll be using & needing them for your quizzes and papers. As far as grading goes, do well on the quizzes, the papers, & the presentations and you should get an 'A.' Dr. Mauer is a great professor and is always there to help his students. I'm definitely looking forward to taking another class with him! :)
He is a intimidatingly intelligent man, but he makes every effort to help you understand the dense material. The feedback on papers looks really harsh, but he is just trying to help you. Simply do the daily readings, and put effort in, and you'll well in the class.
Dont take this class in the summer. It's a lot of work. If this is your summer class. I dont reccommend another class. Every day is a quiz day. He will teach you a lot. Great teacher. Horrible 5 pager at the end of the semester
Dr. Mauer is a great teacher, really knows his stuff. He has a daily quiz, not bad just read, and papers, don't do them at the last minute. He is helpful. His classroom environment is laid back and promotes discussion. I would recommend him.
I also took him for ENG 3014. Professor Mauer is probably the best professor I've taken, he's very knowledgeable, very calm, and willing to work with students to help them succeed. LIT 3714 relies more on outside materials than the textbook, which he provides. Very difficult but interesting class, I would suggest anyone take it with him.
Barry is likely the best professor at UCF. His classes may not be the easiest, but he really motivates you to improve your writing and earn an A. He lectures very well, and has a pile of interesting stories. If you have the opportunity to take him in an honors class, I highly recommend doing so.
Prof. Mauer is a great guy! He is willing to work with students to ensure their success. I took him for Theories of Literature and he answered every email I sent him and was always open to communication. The class is NOT an easy A, but he is willing to work with you and so worth the extra effort. If you're serious about learning, take him.
Dr. Mauer is interesting, but class is as fun as watching paint dry & the mandatory attendance doesn't make it easier. The readings & papers were a pain, but the final was easy if you study the daily quizzes. The presentation can suck if you have bad teammates, but he's great in grading you separately if that's the case.
The quizzes are wild cards. For each one, it's never entirely sure what info he expected you to learn from the text. Most people in the class didn't do the readings and guessed because it didn't change their grades. Most important: do what his assignments say he wants you to do! That will save your grade, easily. Use the office hours.
The great thing about his class (or any of his classes) is that you learn as much or as little as you want. If you come to class, do well on the quizzes, write good papers, you'll be able to get an A (if you want a bad grade just do the opposite). The readings that he assigns are sometimes dense but they are worth reading.
Took him for the honors seminar (propaganda & pseudoscience). Way too much work for what's supposed to be an enriching elective/learning experience. You must do the readings! But he's passionate about what he teaches and makes his expectations clear. He's also real accessible and willing to help.
Very passionate about his work, not afraid to talk until a topic is thoroughly covered. The hardest grader of papers I have ever seen, however he is so helpful and you are a fool if you do not plan on submitting papers to him prior to some consultation. Extremely knowledgeable and intellectually intimidating. Would take again!
Took this class several years ago. Miss him.
Mauer showed me what a complete and total utter moron I am. Priceless.
Great professor! He quizzes you on every reading. Read and you will do fine. Mauer's version of Lit Theory is by far easier to understand than the other professors. Also, he teaches from a different much easier book to read that he posts online as a pdf so you don't have to buy the book. There is one additional novel to read throughout semester.
Really cool guy, lots of discussion relevant to current events. He quizzes on about 80% of the readings, so make sure you do them. He is very critical of papers but a fair grader, even with a lot of feedback on my rubrics I didn't make anything less than an 88. Be warned- He takes this class very seriously, and will make you feel dumb if you don't.
Nice, liberal, and very enthusiastic. Unfortunately, I learned very little about literary theory in this class. Majority of work devoted to pointless, new-agey "Mystory" project (not sure if he always does this or if just semester I took it). Only other assignments midterm paper and participation quizzes on readings. Not awful but learned little.
He is so knowledgeable and intelligent. I've learned more in his class than in any other. We didn't use any textbooks, but a broad variety of philosophical and literary readings which were provided online.
Dr. Mauer gives excellent feedback on papers and is engaging in class discussions. This is a rare gem, especially for online coursework. Take him if you have the choice!
Overall, I enjoyed this class. The subject matter is weird, but not difficult. As long as you read and do the quizzes/discussions, you should get an A. Participation is graded at the end of the course, so make sure you participate throughout the semester.
He is super accessible by email and will reply within hours. He grades the essays pretty heavy, so just focus on not leaving those for last minute. Otherwise, the course was amazing and straightforward. Would definitely recommend and take again.
He responds to emails faster than any other professor I've had. He's super kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend!
Professor Mauer is very passionate about the course material. He's a fair grader and if you put in at least standard effort you will get a B. Just be on top of his assignment due dates. I took this class online and he had things due Mon, Wed, and Fri. Book is required! Heavy usage! I'm selling my old one on eBay for super cheap!
Didn't learn squat about theory. He doesn't really explain anything. When it came to write a paper, I was lost. He expects you to understand the theories even though he didn't explain them. And when students struggled in the discussion posts, he was just super condescending instead of helpful.
He gives you homework to read from different online readings tuesdays and thursdays. You have quizzes and discussions. Some discussions are graded some are not, but it's part of participation grade. He gives hectic paper assignments on things noone cares about. He gave us a final EXAM & a FINAL PAPER never take him again. Useless man
Barry Mauer is a very kind and understanding teacher. You can just see the kindness in his face and voice. There are many quiz and discussions but they are very easy and the teacher genuinely cares about his students. I wish I can take Barry Mauer again but I am IT major and I don't think he teach more IT classes.
Professor Mauer made me really excited to begin taking English classes. He always responds quickly to students and gives great feedback. He provides all of the necessary reading materials. He gives two papers and grades them fairly. The online setup is perfected to make things easy to access. He also gave extra credit opportunities which helped.
His assignments never stop. There are over 40 discusion board posts over the semester and a ton of quizzes. This isn't even counting all of the papers we have to write along with midterm and final exams. I have a full time course load and spend more time doing assignments in this class then my other classes put together. I wish I never enrolled.
Condescending, rude, too much homework, harsh grader, too much reading. The paper assignments suck too. I hate this class and am pretty sure I'm gonna fail it even though I worked hard. Wish I would have picked someone else
Prof. Mauer is not difficult. 2 opportunities for extra credit. My C was not his fault, I can admit it was mine. There are many discussions, a midterm paper, a final paper, 15 question test and secondary essay 500+ word due the same day as the test, 2 hours to complete the essay. Work due Tue & Thur. Not an easy class, but not hard either. DO WORK!
He responds to emails, helps you with major papers, clear instructions on assignments and gives extra credit opportunity! Even did a zoom to discuss the final paper! Honestly, the bad reviews were given by lazy students. English majors complaining about having to write and read LOL! My B was due to my missing assignments, not the Professors fault.
He is very rude and made me feel dumb at every opportunity. There was also too much assignments. I did not like this class.
Nonstop discussion board posts and quizzes. dozens of them, seriously. Also two huge and very involved papers that are harshly graded. After this class you will feel like a horrible writer and will be wishing you could have all that wasted time back. You also don't learn much because with all those assignments there isn't time to learn anything
Nonstop assignments and extremely uncomfortable and triggering material for a good part of the semester. Assignments in a lit theory course shouldnt leave you in tears and depressed all the time.
Like some of the other comments here have suggested, Mauer made me feel stupid for not understanding certain concepts relating to literary criticism. Sure, I was not the best student, but instead of guiding me towards understanding, he completely acted like he was above me.
I enjoyed Dr. Mauer as a lit professor. Most assignments ungraded/low stakes, only one major paper, manageable reading. Never felt talked down to or disrespected, and Dr. Mauer's material was never triggering, it simply addressed valid social conversations/issues through lit study. Flexible on due states and attendance. Overall, I'd recommend him!
Professor Mauer is clear with grading criteria and directions. This class has a lot of work due weekly which is necessary to successfully learn and understand English literary theory. Professor Mauer's lectures are detailed and interesting. At the end of the semester, there is a 5-page final paper which Mauer builds up to throughout the semester.
Dr. Mauer is a nice man and EASY TO REACH.We only had one essay to complete but I didn't learn anything in this class.I could barely grasp one topic because we had to move onto the next within the same day. I don't know how to pick up on topics that fast, even with notes. I burned out mid semester and had a hard time caring for the essay at the end
This professor is easy to reach out to if you need something explained. I reached out to him several times and took notes but that doesn't take from the constant workload. I wanted to enjoy the theories but couldn't and ended up only learning about my essay theory. Heavy workload, no pay off.
Honestly great guy and nice but the class content made absolutely no sense and did not learn a single thing. Was supposed to end with a B but decided I did not deserve that and when I asked him to save my grade he refused and let me end off worse. Nice guy but would not recommend this class whatsoever for english lovers.
I loved and appreciated this class so much when I took it my first semester. Professor Mauer cares for all of his students and gives excellent feedback. My writing the following semester improved, and it showed in my grades, all A's. You will not regret taking him! Ignore the bad reviews from students who didn't apply themselves.
Although I found parts of the class confusing and the text for this class is especially confusing, I found Professor Mauer very kind and helpful throughout the entire class.
Professor Mauer was incredibly concise in his expectations and very kind. The course was easy for me to grasp because of him and he made each module interesting. We frequently used YellowDig where we would be able to interact as a class and it helped us all connect with each other better as well. I highly recommend Mauer for Theories of Literature!
Professor Mauer formats his course to prioritize student success. It is outlined so that students may go at their own pace, in regard to discussion posts. The quizzes are very easy and only there to determine if you actually read the module and the only essay is the Final. 10/10 recommend it is an easy course just do your work.
Prof. Mauer is very passionate about everything he talks about and is very engaging. Many easy assignments/quizzes to make sure the content is read, but the course is essentially based on preparing you for the final research paper by exploring different theories to use. Small final exams accompany the paper but are open book/note, would take again
LIT3212: I learned so much in this class. Dr. Mauer is passionate about the material and cares about helping students become better researchers and writers. Online material is well-organized and discussion boards are lively. He makes time for 1:1 support & gives supportive and useful feedback. Assignments 2x/week, but not an overwhelming workload.
A kind enough professor. I was not a fan of the class, there was a lot of research focused material, and if you're not a fan of research or essay writing, then this class will be a struggle. The load is manageable and due dates are always the same each week (Tuesdays/Thursdays). I strongly dislike that this class is a requirement for the major.
This is a tough class, but Professor Mauer is flexible, communicative, and gives great feedback. There is a research project that is worth a third of your grade, but you can pick your topic and it does not have to be an essay. If you have concerns about the coursework, reach out to him. He will do his best to help you succeed.
Dr. Mauer is a great instructor! He does give a lot of work but is very accommodating and willing to help you with whatever you are going through. I took this class online and even being online he was still very helpful. He will do zooms with you and he is always quick to respond when you email him. I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Mauer was a great professor and was very accessible. The Yellowdig discussions did not always foster a welcoming environment for straight white men, but that seems to be the nature of higher education now. Despite this, Dr. Mauer was an excellent professor who offered and provided assistance freely and is a wealth of knowledge in his field.
Prof. Mauer makes the course engaging and straightforward. With easy assignments, flexible due dates, and a single major paper, the class is manageable. Unstuckstudy proved helpful for preparing for the final exam. Overall, a solid recommendation.
Very patient guy who, despite the course being fully online, made sure to give thorough feedback and explain each grade I was given. Appreciate him fr
Professor Mauer is genuinely the best professor I've ever had. His feedback was incredibly helpful and he is just a kind soul overall. The class was a standard research class but if I had to take it again, I would. He is an amazing professor, who genuinely cares about student's education.
Dr. Mauer is very kind and you can tell he truly has a passion for the subject. As long as you do the reading, the 2-3 small assignments per week are simple. Can be an easy A if you keep up.
awesome professor!! this class was very interesting and great for an online course. some moderate reading, but nothing huge. yellowdig and mini quizzes due each week and then a large essay at the end. super easy to keep up with and fun to take!
