He doesn't seem to know his material that well, needed to refer to the text to answer most questions. Not confident, not convincing. Fairly easy class, attendence req.
nice person, great experience
Seemed more interested in helping attractive girls then other people.
He knows his stuff, but everyday you look at powerpoints and he reads them to you. He has pop quizes that are hard and those are your only assignments besides midterm, final, paper and presentation. I would not recomend this teacher.
I took history and politics of the middle east with this professor. He paid attention to a select few in the class and hardly offered any help when I needed it on a research paper that he assigned. Boring class, he talks and tests. Little interaction between . . . anyone.
I had a great time with class. My friends and I always had a ton of food in the back that we threw around to others and he didn't care. The work was a little hard, but was well worth it in the end. The only thing that drove me crazy was the "and oh, by the way".
I took History of the Middle East and would not recomend it. If your interested in the middle east learn about it somewhere else!!! I felt that he was way to vague for the assignments he gave out and pop quizes on 1500 years of history are not cool!!! Forget about asking questions!
Barry knows his stuff. This is not a BS class. If you apply yourself, you will get alot from the class, but don't take it and expect to not work hard. He lectures can be on the boring side, but the content is good, and he really applys himself to the class.
Governments are not compared, rather, class is of a breif history of foreign nations. Lecture is a mere repeat of text. Does not expand on text. Lecture is unplanned. doesn't "know his stuff"; of 13 countries studied, he only knows in depth Britain. assignments are unconnected to subjects taught.
The Army's gain, Whatcom's loss. Why is this guy even teaching?
THIS GUY IS BORING, DOES NOT TEACH, AND GIVES GAY POP QUIZZES OVER THE WHOLE TEXTBOOK. HAS NO GRACE FOR STUDENTS WITH WHOM POLY SCI IS NOT THERE THING. DONT RECOMMEND HIM!

Odd man, but very good. Easy tests.
Very strict teacher, which is a good thing. Expects you to actually read your text a few times before class, will focus and stay on track. Tests are easy in a sense that they have clarity and simplicity in structure and fromat. Will allow brief impromptu discussions, other than that u can set it up with him. Very fair, very knowledgable! Best time I had studying governments...

Send this guy back to the Pentagon where he came from. Brutal marker and won't help your GPA. Why do people with credentials such as his teach at a community college? He also thinks he knows everything and is unopen to discussion about it. He is right, we are wrong. What a joke!

What a hack! Please get rid of this guy.
who gave this guy his stupid teaching degree. he dont no how to teach at all. all he does is just lecture. his class sucks. and i think he has turtle neck in every color! i would not recommend him as a teacher. get out of his class as soon as you can!
A lightweight who covers his inadequacy with video and repetition. Also, is it just me or is Maxwell really creepy? Make sure to bring garlic to class.

Yo, if you're not ready to read a textbook and not be a Junior College slacker, don't take his classes. 15 years at the Pentagon,10 in the field, homeslice is qualled like a mother. Tough class, not for dumb kids. He is dry and too conservative though.
SMART guy. He's knee deep in the lit, and he knows everything about the classes he teaches. That being said, he's WAY too conservative. He doesn't lecture very much at all, and he does like videos, but his textbooks are good. He answers questions and make sure you understand. He does that well. I'd recommend him (if you're not a dumbass).
Worst teacher ever! Makes everyone feel stupid and gives long boring lectures. Didn't learn anything from the class at all!
Fairly easy class as long as you skim the textbook and study for the midterm and final. Quizzes aren't difficult, but I got the impression that Maxwell really dislikes teaching and doesn't see it as an opportunity to assist students. Not a good class if you need to be told you're doing well, and some assignments seem pointless (current events??).
NOT a class for anybody who doesn't have an interest in history. he expects you to be up to date on current events, and he has discussions every friday class. essays are hella easy, though. if you just keep up on reading, take notes, pay attention, and participate, you'll do fine. definitely knows his stuff regarding the mideast.
Turtle is sooooo boring
He doesn't know how to structure an interesting lecture, he shows some pbs movies that are more boring than his powerpoint slides. an hour and a half is a long time to listen to him. I don't recommend him unless you want an easy grade, with no intellectual growth. He has turned me off from pursuing the political science major.
His arrogance really shines with his “impressive” background. He shows little to no respect for students. Eye-rolling & repeated attempts to embarrass me made him extremely unapproachable. Barry does not engage his class & participation is nearly impossible with his 1.5 hour long PowerPoint lectures. He has the attitude of a high school teacher.
Very difficult teacher, but I learned a lot about politics. Really tries to present subjects neutrally. Did tend to "pick on" certain students, embarrass them, but overall content is interesting and if you're willing to work hard & accept criticism you will learn so much in his class.
Very difficult class to keep up with. Not for anyone who isn't willing to work really hard for a grade. Also, a very picky grader. His lectures can go on for a while&lose most of the students attention. For the big project, he requires that there be costs for everything and you solve a difficult conflict going on in the middle east in great detail.
Miserable class. Harsh grader. If you're down for reading the 800-page textbook, doing the 'solve one of the world's problems' research papers, oh, and reading the 500 page book--mostly all in the last 2 weeks, you should be good.
Good teacher if you are interested in international relations, which I am. Not very popular with others though.
Very difficult. Lots of work, but helpful if you approach him. He's willing to help, but you can't have any attitude with him. He's a retired army officer, and acts like it. He is able to talk very clearly about what he believes, and if you don't have attitude, he won't. But if you start talking down to him, he'll make class miserable for you!
As mentioned by everyone else here, he makes you work for the grade, but by doing so manages to pack a lot of learning and information into a relatively short class. I got my money's worth! You do have to play the game more or less his way, but his way is usually pretty fair.
I learned many useful concepts in this class and found the class slightly difficult.
I really wished he didnot have a attendance polocy, all he did during class was go over the text book in a very boring power point. he needs to learn how to make his class more intresting. i'd say avoid this class if you can.
Barry is by far the most knowledgable teacher in the political science dept. If you are trying to take a free ride, I don't recommend taking his classes. However if you want want to learn the most relavent info in the polisci field I highly recommend his classes
Maxwell is a very tough teacher, IF you don't pay attention. And he gets annoyed when running start kids ask the same questions everyday because they don't pay attention Running start kids, don't take this class unless you can act like a grown up He's really helpful IF you just follow directions!
Barry is a very difficult teacher to get along with. This course is really difficult, when, in my opinion it should be pretty easy to pass. I would recommend rescheduling with a different prof. if you end up with this one. As a straight A student, I have never gotten a C, but I did in this class.
Barry is a difficult teacher if you don't have time for lots of reading and research, but that's what college is about. He is extremely knowledgeable and will help you if you seek help. I'm an A student and I received an A in his class. HE IS NOT A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER AND SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CATER TO THOSE NOT READY TO LEARN LIKE GROWN-UPS.
Maxwell is tough, there is lots of reading and very boring, though informative, lectures. this is not an easy class, but very practical and his no BS style of teaching and presenting material is a welcome relief. I just can't get over how much the man looks like a turtle. Turtle, turtle, turtle... maybe it is the turtlenecks he wears EVERYDAY
Barry can be a difficult instructor for those of you out there who, like me, are new to the college environment. If you pay attention in class, take diligent notes, study up, and follow the rubrics carefully you have an excellent chance of succeeding.
I do not like this guy at all. I could go on and on but I don't want to write an essay. He is ridiculous and his class is ridiculous. I got my first C in this ridiculous class. Don't take him.
Took International Relations. Hard class1 He is so smart that he thinks the students are on his level. He uses words that I dont understant. I got a B in the class becasue I worked hard in the discussion groups and turned in all my work. His lectures are really boring and the work is chalenging. HE will make you work!
Great teacher if you ask me but if you don't think you are ready for "College Level" material dont take his classes.
If you aren't willing to work, don't take this class. End-term research paper is huge, there are weekly assignments. Despite all this, I enjoyed him. He's very sharp, full of interesting info. He's somewhat helpful if you ask. The only things I didn't like was that he turned part of the class into a discussion: it wasn't well attended. Good prof.
I found him very condescending with poor communication skills. He had unrealistic expectations of Jr. college students. However he had vast knowledge of the subject he was teaching, too bad his delivery wqs so poor.
Very boring instructor. I do not like how he doesn't show any grades on canvas. Do not take if you enjoy LONG lectures, a lot of material, and if you know little about political science. I regret not changing instructors. He knows so much more, expecting students to know what he's talking about and to be up to date with everything
Very knowledgeable but not a good teacher. Very tough grader, not a very good communicator. Not recommended unless majoring in POLS.
This guy is a very hard grader and gives very unclear responses but does respond to your emails fast In my class he seemed very picky in our group discussions. Which honestly count for more than anything I should have received a B but instead got my first C ever in college because of the forms. He would just take off points for no reason it seemed
Challenging class, but if you apply yourself, read and ask for clarification there is no reason you won't do well. The lectures are dry but having a day of discussion questions makes up for it, the questions were fun to respond to, and interesting to talk about if your group was engaged. Good course material selection.
Maxwell is really tough on grading.
Barry makes you work for your grade, although the work does pay off. Very reading and writing intensive, as he assigns weekly discussion papers and a huge research paper. Overall good class and I learned a ton!
I took this class online. The directions on some assignments/discussions were not clear. A lot of the weekly quiz questions were worded misleadingly. It is hard to get full points for anything.
I love learning but he made me not care about the subject. By the end of the quarter, I was mentally and emotionally exhausted, just barely slogging through. There is too much reading every week, he gives little help, and the research project was confusing and misleading. Despite everything, I still got an 'A.' Go figure and avoid this professor!!!
The worst teacher I've ever had. He's very condescending and makes you feel very stupid. He's rude and thinks he's always right no matter what. When I had to present, he asked questions that didn't pertain to the presentation or things that I already covered. I didn't learn anything and I left with low-self esteem. Lectures are insanely boring too.
The discussions and tests aren't too bad if you do the reading and find good sources. However, where he fails the most at his job is the research project that is due at the end of the quarter. The class average was a 14 out of a 100, he fails to explain to people what needs improvement from the rough draft and adds a sentence or two on the draft.
Barry is a good teacher. If you show him that you care he will help you succeed. No quizzes, Only one exam: Essay style final. Weekly papers and discussions, be sure to prepare for the discussions. 2 presentations (Battle and leader). Not very big on creativity, so be sure to follow his instructions word for word. He has funny quips now and then!
I don't agree with many of the post I read on here. However, I took his Interdisciplinary Studies cover Econ, Envir and polisci. I enjoy the subject of the course, all material was interesting. Show you care and he responses in kind. Barry was open minded, fair, respectable, good communication. Lecture were okay. Lots of homework and reading.
Barry is a nice guy, but pretty stern and wont take any bs. TONS of reading and 1-2 hr documentary and about 6-8 pgs worth of answers to discussion questions a week. Also, when he says work on your research project an hour a week... HE MEANS IT. THAT THING IS 25+ PAGES LONG. Dont slack, its easy to fall far behind. Good class, though. I loved it!
Good Teacher if you talk to him outside of class.
I don't get why Barry gets such a bad rep. I took his Mid-East history class online and it wasn't bad. If you do reading/watching, get things in on time, and put effort into your work, you'll pass. However, if you really want to succeed, stay on top of current events that pertain to your class-subject. He appreciates subject knowledge.
I am a hard worker. My GPA is 3.7 and I've always worked hard to keep it that way. This class was an absolute horror. I would often email him asking questions and it would take him days to get back. He never clarified things but then would mark you down on them. Didn't give feedback and didn't help AT ALL. Don't take him! WORST TEACHER EVER.
I enjoyed Barry's class quite a bit. It is difficult but I seriously believe people overhype how difficult the class is. You just have to stay on top of things and he is usually pretty chill with grading as long as you show up and put in effort. Not an easy class but definitely not an overwhelmingly difficult one.
Good luck getting an A in this class. One of the hardest grading professors that I've had in my life. It's very difficult to get full points on the weekly discussions and assignments, he takes off points for small reasons.
Gives unnecessary group discussions and too many work.
No matter what is said in class, Maxwell will find a reason to back you in a corner and make you feel stupid. No matter how hard you work or try, your grade wont be as good as deserved.
Barry has been one of my favorite professors. He really knows his stuff, that's for sure! Although the class is tough and requires a lot of reading, he provides a lot of information to help you succeed, as well as a lot of wiggle room with assignments! I don't know why he gets such a bad rep, but if you're ready for a heavy load take Barry's class!
This class is for people who want to learn something, not just get an easy 'A.' There IS a lot of reading but f you want a good grade you have to put in good effort. It's not his fault if you don't. He is pretty reasonable. Take responsibility for yourself in his class and do your best to keep up. It's big boy/girl time.
This class was okay. The discussions and quizzes were pretty straight forward. However, there is a research project that's a big chunk of your grade so if you're just taking this class as a general requirement and not for fun, I wouldn't recommend it.
He gives the worst feedback, and doesn't respond to emails or messages about the work. He grades based on his opinion, and marks you down if he disagrees. Overall, good teacher, as in i learned a lot, but not great methods. I will never take one of his classes again, and every person I have talked to that has had him has had the same experience.
Isn't the most clear
Took this class online. Not much work, easy to manage. You get used to his grading style after a couple tries. Going to his office hours will HELP you. My grades seriously improved after. Online class requires one huge research paper but it's easy if you follow the criteria and start early. Overall pretty good, pretty easy.
He doesn't actually teach anything in the course. Merely prompts you to do your own research, and then marks you down for choosing sources or ideas he disagrees with. It's nearly impossible to get full points on any assignment. He doesn't provide you with any sources to conduct research. Basically it's up to you to meet his standards.
Alright, as the class moved forward, the amount of content learned was HUGE in such a little amount of time! He makes you work hard, but honestly, you get a HUGE DEAL from being in his class. His feedback can be "snarky", but really points you in the right direction where he wants you to learn and understand the actual economic system.
My time spent in this econ class helped me see the entire world a bit differently. I thought I knew what economics was but I was totally mistaken. This class is difficult yes. But, honestly, you learn a lot and its worth it. Don't take if you already have some other challenging classes this quarter. Don't take this one thinking you can squeeze it i
Even though I received an A in this class I would never take it again. He makes us do a ten page paper with the smallest font and then a huge presentation after it in little time. Just don't take the class he requires way to much for what it's worth.
in terms of teaching hes great, but he is very harsh about grading and deadlines. you will need to devote a lot of your time to his class
He's a really solid teacher I personally reached out to him when I was having issues with topics and the sort and he was prompt and super attentive everytime and was also very flexible with deadlines its not an easy class and you have to put in the work but if you communicate you'll be fine.
Barry was a great professor. He was accessible outside of class and dropped the lowest scores for multiple assignments. It was a lot of reading/writing, and lectures are pretty dry, but I felt like I learned a lot from his class. Assignments aren't weighted, so don't worry about doing perfectly on the final.
he does not explain anything, assignments are very difficult.
Can be tough the first couple of weeks but you'll get used it pretty quick
Professor Maxwell was my favorite political science professor and probably my favorite professor overall. His grading can be somewhat tough at times, but it's always fair. He is incredibly knowledgeable and was accessible outside of class when things needed clarification. I thoroughly enjoyed both classes that I took with him and wish I took more.
I took 4 classes with Barry at WCC and I loved all of them. I could not understand why his rating is this low! He really helped me see politics in a measured, rational way. He's very knowledgeable and reasonable. If you put in the effort, he will absolutely reward you. On top of that, I think he's a great guy. As a polisci major, I recommend!
He was more than 30 minutes late to our meeting regarding the class and seemed understanding in the meeting but in class was incredibly harsh. He insisted that an essay I had written myself was AI, and refused to put it through an AI checker, and then made me redo the assignment. Very out of date class and style of teaching, many students dropped.
