Knows material but cant text it well
Barry was my tutorial instructor for Chem 1010, and he is very helpful, knows the material and can teach very well. I'm glad I had the opportunity to have Barry for my Chem 1011 prof this semester (Intersession 2011).
Barry was an excellent prof. his notes were clear and he did plenty of examples in class. Tests are fair, review sessions were offered as well. Overall a great prof who knows how to keep students interested. also very helpful, always responds to emails quickly.
Only had Barry for the tutorials, but he is WICKED. Only bad thing is he is left handed so when he write you can't see much!
Barry is absolutely amazing! I learned so much from him and would suggest anyone to be taught by him if possible. The best instructor I have ever had in all my school years. He is extremely helpful and loves what he does. He makes learning about chemistry very interesting. You will love any class that he teaches he is that good!
Barry is my first prof at MUN. He teaches the material extremly well, he keeps things interesting (does little experiments during lectures sometimes), and is willing to stay back after class as long as neccessary to help students understand. Tests are more than fair, he never throws curveballs, and is a very easy marker. Would HIGHLY reccomend.
Best prof I've had so far, explains material great and helps whenever you need it. Wants everyone to do well and loves explaining everything to you and make sure you know it.
Barry is the best Chem instructor I ever had! I had him for 1050 and got really lucky and had him for 1051 as well! He responses to e-mails very fast and even though he don't tell you the answer but he points you in the right direction so you can learn! He's funny and he always plays music during the lab time! Highly recommend!
The man. Take the evening slot for chem 1050 lab, answered every question i had very straight forward did not judge for not knowing or understanding something and only took 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning of the labs to explain the procedure.
Great proffessor good class everything easy accessible.
He keeps lectures interesting. Very good at explaining the notes so going to class is very beneficial.
My favourite prof by far. He keeps the class engaged and interested in what we're learning. Explains things very thoroughly and is always willing to try to explain it in a different way if you don't understand. I really hope I'll be able to get him as a prof again.
Barry Power was an amazing prof. Hes very enthusiastic and keeps the class engaged. He makes even boring subjects sound interesting. Hes very down-to-Earth, his tests are fair, and he is always eager to answer questions and help if you need it.
Barry is such a great prof, I highly recommend him. He's so funny and his lectures are amazing! However you have to be willing to put in the work to pass this course.
Barry Power is awesome!! Hes extremely helpful and encourages you to email him when you have questions and hes fairly quick with responses. He makes class easy to listen to because his tone of voice isnt monotone. Even in the boring parts. He gives chances for extra credit The class itself isnt overly hard if you do the practice questions.
Really great!
He made topics very interesting and was very approachable. stays after class if you have any questions and always has a office hour in which he encourages you to come by and ask for help. Before each test he puts up a review assignment for extra credit and posts practice tests which are similar to the test. Participation marks. Easy A
Really interesting lectures! He makes chemistry fun and easy to learn!
Barry is a super fun prof, by far my favourite. He has a sense of humour but he's also straight forward. Prepares you for tests and final exam! Highly recommend!!!
best prof I've ever had!!!! lectures were informative and made easy to comprehend.
Gives great lectures, makes everything very easy to understand, would recommend 100%!
Very good prof, best Ive had yet! His lectures are very interesting and easy to follow, and his tests are exactly like the examples he gives in his notes. Hes very helpful in class and is great at explaining thing in detail if you have questions! Recommend 100%
HOT. The best prof, gives good lectures, makes chemistry fun!! Loves when students ask questions and is clear on the grading criteria.
What a guy. Notes are all clear and concise. His explanations are perfect. No homework, but uses LearningCatalytics in class so you have to participate. Young and fun. Performed small experiments in class and got students to help. Tests are great. No textbook used. Best prof ever, hands down. Ask him about the Toronto Maple Leafs - he'll love you.
Lectures are informative, grading scheme is fair. Does his best to explain course material. Funny guy, but serious when he needs to be. The way a prof should be.
best prof. period.!
Easy to reach, answers emails quickly! Likes to add a joke to keep things interesting! 10/10
My favourite teacher. Makes class interesting and is great at explaining problems. He makes chemistry easy! I would not be doing well in this course if it wasn't for his lectures.
This guy is an absolute gem. His tests are very fair and easy, he's crazy funny, and the work load is just right. Mastering Chemistry is used so the only complaint someone may have is that showing up is mandatory, but if you have him as a prof you're going to wanna show up to class. I hated chemistry in high school and now i actually enjoy it.
Wonderful Prof! Super funny and makes lectures interesting.
Easily the best professor I've ever had. His tests are fair and he gives lots of part marks. He very clearly explains the material and loves to answer questions. Really passionate about what he does and he keeps things fun in class with dad jokes and experiments. I really struggled with this course in the past and I currently have a B. 10/10 guy.
amazing prof, vary fair when it comes to tests. Gives you a list of practice problems for each chapter and thats what he tests you on. No tricks or curveballs, do the practice problems, pass the course. However, its a hard course so if you don't give yourself at least 4 days study time before a midterm, you're not gonna do good
he is very energetic, will tell you what you need to study, helps you in every way he can
Barry is a great prof. He is always willing to help and held a three hour review session before our final. He provided lots of practice and his midterms were pretty fair with no surprises. If you have a choice to take chem 1010 with them I highly recommend.
Great Prof.
He makes chemistry fun and with his enthusiasm keeps you dialled in during class. He is super open to helping students outside of class time, especially those who really want to succeed. He cares about his students and is very responsive to emails.
Awful in the lab, very critical about every aspect. The report, in the lab, everything. Made me cry on multiple occasions and failed me on a few labs. Made me feel like I shouldn't be doing a chemistry degree.
He's a great prof. ,explains everything well and if you don't understand he is very open to questions. He is always willing to help during his office hours. He even held a 3 hour review before the final. He also makes it clear that it doesn't matter if you have 1st or 2nd edition of the book because they're the same which saves a lot of money.
Barry is an absolute beast, best prof I've ever had at MUN. Notes are great, gives good examples in class that closely mirror what will be on the tests, this man leaves no stone unturned when it comes to teaching chemistry. He is also very accessible outside of class and answers all of your questions.
Barry is a gift to Memorial. His lectures are far from boring, and assignments and exams are extremely easy. He teaches in a lecture hall as if it's a one-on-one scenario, ensuring everyone understands what is happening. He is very kind and helpful both in and out of class. He is accessible in his office, online, or even through Snapchat. Great guy
Best prof I've had yet. Very good at teaching and explaining concepts in different ways. Provides a ton of review with most of it being worth extra credit if completed. Also very understanding, providing extensions on assignments for many students on many occasions. I would highly recommend him!
Barry is an AMAZING prof! As a first year student taking chemistry, I can honestly say he made the class really interesting and explained all concepts very well. All the questions done in class resembled questions that would be asked on an exam. He prepared you well, and was always available to help when needed. Would 100% take him again!
He connects with everybody in the class and makes everyone concentrate and participate. He made chem seem fun.
Barry Power is hands down the best prof I have ever had. He will explain the material as many times as needed during his office hours for you to understand. He responds to emails very quickly and is just a very nice person. We didn't finish all the material during lectures so he took it off the final and didn't expect us to teach ourselves at all
Great guy, knows what he's talking about and no complaints. Loves when people asks him questions and elaborates over email. Handy when the course is remote!
I would highly recommend Dr. Power for any chemistry course, especially for remote learning! My Chem1050 course was easily the least stressful course I took all semester thanks to Dr. Powers teaching methods.
I had Dr. Power for an Online semester and he was by far the best prof I had out of my 5 courses. His lectures were easy to follow and he explained topics well. I went into this course not having a strong understanding of chemistry but this course ended up being my best. Would highly recommend!
Was such a good prof. Very helpful and kind would 100% take his class again.
He is really good at explaining difficult concepts. I learned a lot from his lectures. Lots of work in the course, and he is a tough grader. Make sure you read the syllabus! Not doing so is one of his pet peeves. Overall, very nice prof and easy to talk to.
The nicest prof I have had to date. His Snapchat group chats made it easy to get questions answered. His quizzes were for the most part easy and he did not grade hard at all. Would recommend him to anybody taking chemistry.
Ive had Barry for chem 1050 and 1051, simply put I love him. Barry is one of the best teachers Ive had, his tests are fair and he gives you extra credit assignments and participation marks which boost up your grade. If you do the work you will succeed. If I have a question I Snapchat him and he answers so fast its great. Totally recommend.
I had Mr. Power for Chem 1051 and Chem 1050 online and he was by far my favorite prof at mun. Makes the course enjoyable and his lectures are very easy to follow. He does review lectures for each chapter and really explains the work well. I would highly recommend Mr. Power to anyone doing these courses.
Barry is an awesome prof. He has been accessible and accommodating from day one. He seems genuinely excited to teach and can really make abstract concepts relatable to the real world by either giving direct examples or providing metaphors. If you are a student that needs to take chem, Id suggest going out of your way to take his class.
Overall great professor. The course was a bit of work, there are assignments and LC on Mastering Chemistry, then chapter quizzes and 7 Labs. He is always available to help. The creative assignment was a great opportunity to switch gears a bit and express yourself, all while learning.
Professor Barry is one of the greatest professors you'll ever meet in your college life! he cares about detail and no one can match his lectures it's really easy to get good grades if you don't procrastinate even with that he'll give a bit of extra credit every now and then overall he'll make you wish that he taught all of your courses.
Barry is great! Very engaging lectures, and lots of assignments, but manageable in length.
Best prof in the school, makes Chemistry very easy to understand and really breaks down the material. Definitely the most I have understood Chemistry in my life. I fully recommend trying your best to get him as your prof.
Prof Power is great! He's accessible, funny, and genuinely enjoys what he's doing. There's a few quizzes each week, but they take less than 10 minutes each and they keep you on track. You really need to show up to lectures for understanding and he has participation marks as well. But he makes coming to class bearable and he's a great guy.
Barry is probably the best prof here. He makes every lecture engaging and unique in its own way, so you forget nothing. He cares about everyone doing well, which you can tell by how he reacts when no one answers his questions. His assignments are quick and easy, and are a great way to review material. Everyone give Barry a round of applause.
He is such a nice prof. Him and Fridgen are both great, you truly cant go wrong with their of them for first year chemistry. Read the textbook if you want to excel!! Hes very helpful and relatable. 10/10
Dr. Power is hands down the best prof that I've had at MUN. Explains things very well, is super approachable and easy to reach, and his lectures are always entertaining. His tests are super fair and he gives a lot of makeup work that helps your mark. 11/10, would take him for every course if I could.
Barry Power was my favourite prof this semester!! He made lectures entertaining by being funny and relatable and if you were ever stuck, it was easy to ask questions and he was very approachable. You can also tell he cares about his students encouraging us to reach out if stuck and believes everyone can get an A
Great prof. Never wanna do chem with any other prof. He was very entertaining and interactive, gave fair assessments. Had small assignments due three times a week but each one took a max of 20 mins. Barry is awesome
Barry is my favourite prof Ive ever had :)
Best prof ever! Barry Power is VERY accessible outside of class. Lectures are well thought out and entertaining. Barry does not overcomplicate any of the course content and makes it very easy to learn the course material.
Dr Power was a highlight in a tough online semester! His lectures were easy to follow along and he laid out the content in a way that was easy to understand. Do not be intimidated by the little assessments he assigns, most are helpful to stay on task and grade boosters! Best first year chem prof!!
What a lad he is. A solid 100/10. He makes chemistry class fun to attend.
Barry was a great prof who gave lots of opportunity to improve your grade throughout the semester. Would have loved him for 1051 as well but didn't line up with my schedule!
Cannot recommend Dr. Power enough. You can tell he really wants to help his students understand the material. At first I thought the 3 assignments a week were a little excessive but they really helped my understanding of the material. Lots of opportunity for bonus marks too! Definitely one of the best first year chem profs
Awesome guy. This course was hard but that isn't Barry's fault. Love how he has three small assignments due a week instead of one big one that I would leave until last minute. Very smart. Barry wants you to do well, and you can do well if you make use of the resources he provides you with. Totally reccomend
Dr. Power was an absolutely incredible prof. You could tell he genuinely wanted you to succeed in his class. He is very into his lectures and makes them enjoyable to go to. He assigned us three mini assignments a week, based on the latest lecture. This might sound like a lot but they're 3-5 questions max, and help you keep on top of your studying.
Dr. Power is an amazing professor, even though this will be my first and only chemistry course he has made it very bearable. He is a sweetheart and wants the absolute best for his students, I would 100% recommend him to anybody. He also gives opportunities for easy marks and extra credit (he makes it possible for students to succeed).
Dr. Power is by far the best prof at memorial. you can tell he truly cares for his students and wants you to succeed. this will not be the last course I take from him. he is engaging and is happy to answer questions in class. 4 tests, a final exam, mini assignments, a creative assignment, and participation marks. he makes it possible to do well.
Professor Power talks very quickly and teaches very very quickly. if you are a visual learner do not take this class. He mostly reads off PowerPoint and gives learning catalytic questions. I found I had to teach myself everything and found it very difficult to learn in class, especially with how fastly paced it was. I do not recommend at all.
Best teacher I've had, He gives lot's of opportunity for extra credit, his lectures were fun and engaging. The final was fairly easy, was not a tough grader. You have to purchase a book to access mastering chemistry where you'd do weekly assignments. I would recommended him to anyone taking Chem.
What a king. The best professor you'll ever meet. His lectures are pure quality. He made me actually enjoy chemistry. God bless Professor Power. The best thing is he actually helps you do well and improve in so many ways such as office hours and relatively lenient grading.
Really nice guy and great teacher. I suck at chem and was an annoying student spamming him of emails. He always answered me and is laid back. He makes everything understandable and has a chem groupchat that he would just answer questions in, in his time off even.
Wonderful professor. Speaks clearly and places emphasis on only needed topics. What you learn is actually what is on his exams. Very clear expectations. Always felt prepared for all tests and assignments. Gives lots of opportunity for extra credit. Easy to contact and is one of the best professors I have had so far.
The lectures and Notes are amazing. 3 small weekly assignments every day or so, but keeps you prepared for quizzes. Quizzes are very fair, and easy if you listen in class and do the work. I would recommend Dr. Power to anyone who is going to do 1050 or 1051. Also, very easy to talk to and reach outside of class and office hours.
One of the best profs I've had at MUN! Lots of opportunities to get a good grade, and responds quickly to any questions. Wants you to do well and overall a great professor.
He's a great prof, I had him for 1050 and now 1051. Knows what he's doing, tests were fairly similar to content in class. Lot's of opportunity for extra credit, the only complaint I have about him is that his final was very difficult. He also didn't post any practice final on mastering like in the prior term I had him. Overall a great prof!
Barry was an absolute delight to have as a teacher. I had him for both 1050 and 1051 and he made me feel very welcomed. His class is lecture and participation heavy but he keeps it very entertaining with interactive demonstrations which are extremely helpful. He also really cares about his students and their well being!! Recommend!!
Excellent professor, notes contain all the information. Midterms are very fair to the material taught and he provides lots of opportunity for grades. The weekly assignments may seem a lot but getting them done is not bad as they are short and provide great practice for midterms. The break up of course is also great, lots of opportunity to succeed.
I had to leave for a mid term in another course and he started acting like a child...in the middle of a sentence he says "theres a 1001 mid term isn't there? we're done." *everyone sits in silence* "we're done you can leave" *passive aggressively*....... chill out some people have a 10 minute walk across campus, be grateful people showed up at all.
Great for first year transition. Easy to understand and explains concepts well.
Great lecture, interesting demonstrations. He explains concepts really well and is active with helping students outside of lecture times. Dr. Power wants you to do well.
I had Dr. Power for Chem 1050. Each week there was 3 mastering chem assignments and there was 4 term test which in my opinion was a lot to keep up on with in addition to all of the other courses.
Dr. Power tries to make transition to university as easy as possible for his students. 3 easy homework assignments a week. Participation marks for using learning catalytics in class. He is more than willing to respond to emails and explain any questions you have. He is great!
Dr. Power was a good professor, although he was passive-aggressive at times he is one of the better professors I had. Just make sure that you keep up with the quizzes on mastering chemistry as there are quite a few per week, and definitely read the notes before class as he reads through them quickly.
I'm not one to write reviews for professors, but Barry is such a good prof that I feel like I need to. Barry genuinely cares for what he does, and it shows. Lectures are interesting, informative, and easy to follow. He is very accessible for questions outside of class and every evaluation was 100% fair and comparable to samples provided.
Overall a good prof! Is great at explaining topics and notes are also good.
Barry can be stern and passive-aggressive when dealing with personal things but overall he is pretty understanding. His quizzes can be tough but are usually similar to the practice exams he posts. Lecture notes are great.
I loved taking CHEM 1051 with Dr. Power. I found his lectures engaging and never felt bored. He is the best chemistry prof I have ever had.
Dr. Power's biggest strength is providing engaging lectures. You can hear him clearly, and he's enthusiastic about the material. Participation does matter in the lectures as you work through Learning Catalytic problems in class, but it helps to reinforce the material. The quizzes can be a little hard, but if you work hard enough, you'll be fine.
Dr. Power did a great job at delivering and explaining all course content. The class was fast paced due to the amount of content required to be completed. Dr. Power provides many beneficial practice assignments outside of lectures and makes clear, detailed, well explained slideshows. With all the resources he provides the pace is not an issue.
Okay lectures, I stopped going at the end since lecture capture was available. Dr. Power was not a prof I felt comfortable asking for help on assignments as he would make it seem like we should already know certain things. He is also not the type to give extensions. He is, however, the type of prof to round up your final grade.
Dr. Power cares about providing students with all material needed for this course. The course is fast paced and includes a large amount of material and is strongly math based. There are three assignments weekly (MC) and LC every class. Mid terms about every three weeks (2 online, 2 in person), know sig figs! Overall very good and engaging prof.
I have now taken Chem 1050 and 1051 with Dr. Power. He is extremely good at explaining the material. He is also more than willing to answer questions over email or in his office about chemistry topics. While attendance technically isn't mandatory there is a small percentage of your grade that is reserved for participation marks.
Pros: Dr. Power is fairly good at teaching and gives a lot of homework/way to improve your grade. Cons: Attitude problem -specifically in office, talks down to you in a borderline demeaning way, hard grading, VERY VERY VERY long tests. The exam was near impossible to finish in time! Take Fridgen's class!!!!!
Worst prof i have ever taken!!! In terms of his lectures they are extremely content heavy, relatively interesting but if you space out for 5 minutes you're a unit behind! In person term tests and exams almost impossible to pass!! I had all 90's in high school and failed with barry power, retook the course with another prof and got an A!
Great prof. I really recommend him for this course and chem 1050. His test were a lot like his old test from other years so I recommend studying those.
I liked him as a person but in class he goes waaayyy too fast, he never pauses for longer than 20 seconds to allow you to write things down. Unless youre confident in your skills in chemistry make sure to take photos cause he wont stop.
Im re-rating Mr. Power after the midterm test. His tests are way to long, extremely difficult to finish in time and he still flies through course material even when the class has struggled. Seems like a great guy but his course is way to intense for an intro course
Barry was a great! Only prof in my first year that actually taught me something. He is very passionate in his lectures and that's clear when in class. 3 small 2-4 question assignments weekly rather than a large one. Daily participation questions so attendance is important. Never touched my textbook. Very fair tests just like practice ones provided
Barry is the Michael Jordan of chemistry professors. His lectures are engaging and interesting, he gives many small assignments throughout the year that are great for grade boosting, the participation aspect through learning catalytics helps with keeping up with the lectures as well. Put this guy in the chem prof hall of fame RIGHT NOW!
Chemistry is hard but Barry is pretty good. He explains topics well and gives lots of hints for the final or the tests. would recommend
Barry was a great prof! His quizzes were pretty straight forward if you went to class and listened to his advice. He is also very willing to take feedback for his teaching, and also willing to give you feedback and help with understanding material. Would highly suggest him!
Barry Power is a professor you feel is genuinely passionate about the material he teaches you. You won't catch yourself falling asleep in his class. Barry teaches with energy but is also very fast. Look away for a second, and you're behind. I recommend reading the lecture slides he provides ahead of time to familiarize yourself with the material.
Barry was great! He was clearly passionate about chem and tried to make lectures interesting. The quizzes were all straight forward and there was opportunity for extra credit. The in-person quizzes were tougher, being 7 pages of long answers done in 50 mins but the final was exactly like previous years that were posted.
although there is a lot of assignments and in class participation (3 weekly assignments) barry was a very informative and organized prof! he always made sure we knew exactly what to expect and he made his lectures as entertaining as possible with the occasional “experiment” to demonstrate concepts
Really liked the way that he taught the class, was very clear and knew the material very well. He said to buy the textbook however I personally didn't use it; he did however use mastering so that is a must buy. He gave 3 assignments a week that took 15 minutes each.Tests were harder than expected and was really picky when grading. Final wasnt hard.
Dr. Power was a very enthusiastic professor, making the course material much more enticing to learn, coming from someone who strongly dislikes chemistry. He did many examples and also demonstrations in class, making topics easier to learn and visualize. He is also hilarious and very down to earth. I would highly recommend Dr. Power's class.
Dr. Power was a great prof. I had him for chem 1050 and picked him again for chem 1051. His online components really help your overall grade and are super fair. His prep for quizzes is also super helpful. He's always willing to answer questions, give extra feedback and is just a nice guy all around !
He is a really good professor, he explains stuff really well and the tests were manageable. I will say the fact he does three small homework assignments per week is a bit rough, they're super easy and only take 15 minutes to do but since a new one comes every two days I often forgot about them.
Professor Power's lectures are engaging, and he provides great resources like practice exams. The class can be challenging, but with hard work and tools like Unstuck ai, you can excel.
Dr. Power's lectures are long, fast-paced, and often circular. He's a nice guy and accessible outside class, but his tests are brutal, midterms are fair-ish but not easy, and the hardest examples possible were on final. We didn't finish the course material. If he writes the final, good luck, unless you're Marie Curie, maybe choose another prof.
The best chemistry prof at MUN. Great lectures, accessible, fair. Three Mastering Chem a week (very short), two online quizzes, two in person. Creative assignment. Tons of participation marks. Shoutout Barry fr
Barry is fantastic! There's so much extra credit to be had with him. His lectures are captivating and keep you interested for the whole 50 minutes. The final wasn't really that similar to old posted exams, but if you attended every class and actually understood the material, it was not that bad. The final is only worth 30%, so don't let it stop you
Dr. Power is an amazing professor. His in-class tests are very fair, and there is plenty of room for extra credit (Mastering, Learning Catalytics, Creative Assignment). Although the final exam was quite difficult and not like what he had posted for review, it is possible to do very well taking this course with Dr. Power. He is very easy to contact.
Barry was a pretty good prof overall. His lectures were engaging, quizzes were relatively fair, and he provided many opportunities for marks outside of testing. He posts three assignments a week, which are short but can be annoying to keep up with. His final exam was also very difficult, and nothing like the practice material.
Barry's lectures were amazing and he always kept them interesting. Hilarious guy with great jokes. Lots of people complained about the difficulty of midterms and the final, however I felt they were pretty fair, especially if you did the practice problems. He is kind and accessible outside of class, and gave good feedback on evaluations.
I've had Barry for now 3 of my chem courses in my 2 years here at MUN and he is nothing short of an amazing professor! Personable and very engaging lectures. Puts a lot of effort to help students understand the material; grading is always fair, although tests can be really lengthy for 50 minutes. Go to class, do practice, and you're set.
One of the most clear and concise professors you can have. Extra credit outside of class, a snapchat groupchat that he's consistently active in, and always an open door for questions. Power is objectively the best first year chem prof you canh have at MUN.
Barry Power is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. His tests are very fair and cover what was actually learned in class. He responds to emails quickly and is interested in engaging with his students. He is very knowledgeable and a fantastic teacher. Would highly recommend.
Barry is amazing, would email him anytime and he would be very quick to answer and help. His lectures alone made it worth it, I learned almost everything in class. Tests were very fair, final was very different from those, but Kozak wrote it so. So many opportunities for extra credit. He will not cancel class for ANYTHING, its kind of funny.
Barry is a nice guy, and his lectures were pretty good. When I did the course there were 3 assignments a week online which did take some time, 3 quizzes instead of midterms and some extra credit things. Passed 1/3 quizzes (should have prepared more) and still passed the course by doing good on the final. Would recommend, but a very heavy course.
Amazing prof. Lots of practice material along with clear lectures were given, with lots of bonus opportunities for a grade booster. Very accessible outside of class as well.
